Happy Friday to all of you field hands! I hope massa gave you a break from all that plantation work you have been putting in all week.
Anywhooo, I have some thoughts:
First, I see that some things never change. My man "W" is as lazy now as he was when he was president. Seems he lifted a ton of stuff for his new book. BTW, is it just me, or were you all as offended by him saying that the Kanye West rant was the lowest and most disgusting moment of his presidency? Ahhm, excuse me; what about the war in Iraq and all the poor souls (Americans and Iraqis) who lost their lives because of it? Don't even get me started again on this guy. I am trying hard to forget him.
Then there are those wonderful news Anchors over at Radio Rwanda. Go ahead and make fun of someone who has a heart attack on the air. Nice. Stay classy wingnuts. It's getting harder to differentiate between the Radio Rwanda news folks and these guys. Actually, I think The Onion is more credible. (Their stuff on Biden was classic.)
Also, I see that Glen Beckkk is f&^%$#g with another group of people. ---Slowly but surely, other groups of people are starting to find out how us black folks feel when this clown channels his inner klansman. Let's see how he survives this latest dust up.
Finally, there has been a lot of discussion about the latest Tyler Perry flick, "For Colored Girls". I never saw the play, and I am not a big TP fan, but I know that the day is coming when I will have to watch this bad boy. (Don't ask.) I can't give my honest opinion as yet, because I haven't seen it. But I do want to hear yours. (Especially the sisters out there.) Folks have weighed in with various opinions, so obviously the theme of the movie struck a nerve with us black folks.
It's all good as far as I am concerned. Sometimes us black folks just need to talk.
I'm out.
Field,
ReplyDeleteBeckkk is trying to get folks to join HIS church. He better be cool bashing one of the big boys in the Jewish Community. If they rain down on him, Murdoch won't be able to save him.
Kanye West is a no account, no talent, spoiled rich boy. I am embarassed that he's black.
ReplyDeleteFor Colored Girls is a long wallow in misery, a lumpy gumbo of high drama and low melodrama. The men in this world are almost uniformly untrustworthy or despicable or both. The women, almost uniformly, are sanctified by their rage – their victimhood.
ReplyDeleteKimberly Elise is kind of hot - I'd bend her sideways - but this movie is insufferable.
No one but bitter, lonely women will go to see this move.
1/2 star.
I haven't seen the movie and probably will wait for the DVD, but purchase the book last Friday. It's comprised of 20 poems, and TP has used 16 for the movie. TP had to add dialogue to fit film format. I think that is way the problem lies because the playwright's voice is diluted. Even the playwright said that although like it, she wished that he had finished it. I think her play is very difficult to translate to film, and then you have man writing the screenplay along with his terrible direction. I think Spike Lee is a better director with a wider range of subjects within the black community. However, Spike and Kasi Lemmons who did the wonderful movie Eve's Bayou probably would have done a better job, but they no clout in Hollywood because it's about making and not necessary making good films. From what I understand from critics, they love the performances of the women especially Loretta Devine, and thought the direction and screenplay fell flat. When I watch a movies, the characters have to have depth, and the plot has to be good in order to keep my interests. Movies do have an emotional affect, but have to say to a man who saw this movie feels as though that it's an attack against black men, then (I getting a little therapist here) there is something you relate to than you care to admit. The movies could pose a question that I am kind of man, and one doth protest too much. It's just something to think about.
ReplyDeletei am MORE offended that quite a few bm want wm to care MORE about the quality of their lives than they do themselves.
ReplyDeleteIF bm could muster the same amount of disdain and plain talk for EACH OTHER that they seem to reserve for bw, wm and others, it would be a new day. i suggest dealing with the truth of the violent havoc quite a few bm are reaking on the so-called black community. the 18 year old Tillman wasn't the only one, senselessly beaten to death this week BY OTHER black males. i won't even discuss the bw and children that dropped like flies behind the black on black carnage. based upon WHAT do black folks think others are concerned with saving us as black folks? at what point do we get serious about saving ourselves?
Kanye I Prefer Mutts West (yes, THAT is how he referred to the Obamas and Halle Berrys of the world) needs therapy and a bit of time with A CLUE. i agree with anon, i am ashamed of him. i wish some other collective with claim him! his petulant, emotionally UNdisciplined antics are annoying. maybe he could have his jaw REwired shut? that might help. he could still earn a living; through the wire sounded just fine when that jaw of his was wired shut before. maybe the extra effort would have him focused on easy like it does so many other much melanined males, and he will go somewhere and hush. lol. ok, i will leave it at that.
re: for colored girls, i wish more folks would have Hill Harper moment every now and again. ANYTIME ANYONE attempts to address the very real wrong plaguing more blacks than not, folks start howling about "bashing".
Hill Harper on the movie:
"Recently, Hill Harper wrote a piece for The Grio defending the depiction of Black men in the Tyler Perry movie 'For Colored Girls’. Many critics have panned the film for its less than favorable, and somewhat offensive view of African-American males as unstable, irresponsible, lying, violent, crazy dirty dogs. In the midst of defending the film, Harper raises an interesting point:
There’s a particular scene that I was shooting with the wonderful actress Anika Noni Rose, where I — Hill Harper – not the character Donald, was blown away by the poem that she recited to me. In this monologue, Anika Noni Rose’s character tells my character the police officer how she was raped. And she said — in paraphrase — that women are taught to always be afraid of “the stranger” but perhaps who women should fear the most are the men that they allow into their homes and into their lives. This speaks to the fact that violence against women by men is perpetrated much more by individuals that women know than men that they do not know. The poem holds lessons for both men and women."
Hill goes on to say:
ReplyDelete"A friend told me that the scene made her realize that all her life she had been duped. Having been told not to go here or there or experience this because of the fear of that “stranger.” When in fact the ones who hurt us are often the “familiar.” That was so powerful for me to hear come from a woman’s mouth. Because remember, as men – though we need people next to us, men and women to hold us up, support us, and love us – we don’t walk around with that type of fear at all."
again, i won't add the layer of child sexual abuse that is rampant amongst black americans. these girls aren't "choosing" anything. truly blessed is she that makes it OUT of her home in one piece. oftentimes protecting the male (wouldn't want another one of them in jail) is more important than protecting the girl, so folks turn a blind eye. i care for the little boys also; realizing fully that IF they could become pregnant they would be exhibiting a lot of the same symptoms of sexual abuse. be real clear. i focus purposefully on the girls. after the misuse and abuse, folks magically expect them to function like "strong black women". the menfolk are going to need to stand up and give a dang about the boys...starting with their own. menfolk will need to esteem themselves enough to be able to see themselves in others that look like them and take a few moments to care.
posted about "the strong black woman" bs that folks constantly point to justify their brutality towards black women and girls @ http://www.focusedpurpose.blogspot.com/
as far as beck, i have not EVER seen things fare well with those that openly insult the jews. the night arsenio hall had farrakhan on his show, i knew he was cancelled. the day they released the reports about mel gibson's drunk rant against the jews, i knew he would pay for that. helen thomas...ditto. even if not immediately, beck is going to feel it. the jews are not even trying to care how others might feel about their stance when it comes to their collective image. may black folks follow their lead...real soon. education. power. i am NOT to be trifled with approach.
LAA, i wrote you a response on the other thread, i think it disappeared. it is interesting that all the straight no chaser responses are gobbled up. LOL. paraphrasing, i am not worried about the sista soldiers. the God of my understanding and me constitute a majority. let them bring it.
Same s***, different day
ReplyDeletehttp://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/09/AR2010110907246.html
One of my readers explained: "Perry tapped into an interesting niche of emotionally scarred women who need to find a way to punish their abusers, and he gives them that emotional outlet."
ReplyDeleteCan anyone name a movie that came out recently starring a black man who wasn't a sociopath? Someone who had a terrific screen presence, like a young Paul Robeson? And he portrayed a character who was complex and fully drawn? Did he respect black women, too?
Anybody see that movie? I didn't. But surely it's out there somewhere, right? An alternative to those Tyler Perry films portraying black men as Satan's gift to black women? But where is it?
Maybe I didn't hear about it because of all the buzz over Perry's "For Colored Girls," which opened Friday and is based on Ntozake Shange's 1975 stage play, "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf."
Or maybe I didn't hear about it because I was retching too loudly after seeing "For Colored Girls" - and reading so many inexplicably glowing reviews.
"This movie is powerful," Demetria L. Lucas wrote recently in Essence, the nation's premier magazine for black women. "It is incredible. The performances in it are astonishing, but most of all, this film will leave you lifted."
Me, I thought the movie should have been renamed: "For Black Men Who Have Considered Homicide After Watching Another Perry Movie..."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/07/AR2010110704428.html
RE: Colored Girls, I'm sure there are some things I am not, nor will ever be, allowed to have an opinion on. That movie will surely be one of them. Will I go see it? Doesn't matter. I never went to go see Color Purple but thanks to my wife's obsession I can quote that entire movie word for word.
ReplyDeleteAs far as Bush v. Kanye, I in no way intend to defend Bush, a war should be far bigger than a personal insult, but this whole thing does go to illustrate how big a deal it is to white people to be called a racist.
Yeah, I know, let me hear it about how we are racist and just don't like it to be said out loud, but really folks, to "us" being called a racist is worse than a Momma insult. NO ONE wants to be called that, it is like Kryptonite.
But I would have thought Bush was used to that seeings how Chavez called him the devil... which is essentially the same thing.
Beck runs his mouth again.
ReplyDeleteWingnut newscasters go nuts.
Bush pouts over how Kayne stole his red Power Ranger -- the COOL one!
Tyler Perry makes another movie that I have little interest in watching.
All in all, a slow day.
"But I would have thought Bush was used to that seeings how Chavez called him the devil... which is essentially the same thing."
ReplyDeleteBush is not evil, nor is he the devil. He was a President who did what he thought was right. At least he was consistent and did what he said he would do.
You can't count on what Obama says.
RE: TP produced another movie depicting the plight of bw and what they have to put up with from bm, who are DEFINITELY evil, individually and collectively. In addition, bm are weak and undependable. Let us NEVER forget that about those good-for-nothing bm. But fret not. They are killing each other off and will probably become extinct.
Field, you certainly KNOW which gender to ask when it comes to bw and bm. It's always been bw... I don't ever recall you asking bm shit about relationships. Keep up the good work.
Kanye is a Blowfish. End of story.
ReplyDeleteFunny, how Kanye just HAD to apologize to bush...just like the guy Cheney shot in the face. And look at how bush holds a grudge. Most of us adults would chalk Kanye's outburst to the emotional turmoil knowing American citizens were dying...and bush and Chertoff were not sending relief.
ReplyDeleteNotice how bush never once expressed a mea culpa for Iraq, Afghanistan, the crashed economy, the American dead from Katrina, the Klanification of the Voting Rights section, the hiring of blantanly incompetent rubes for DOJ, the politification of Science, the muzlling of Scientists who followed the data instead of dogma....
Mold
Bush holds no grudges. He is a Christian and doesn't seek revenge.
ReplyDeleteIt is tragic and sad that so many folks misunderstood Bush.
Bad as Glen Beckkk is, Rush Limpballs is even worse. I had to listen to these overpaid idiots once for a college class on polemics ancient and modern- millions of dollars earned for their verbal horses**t while some nurse is busting her tail for pocket change doing far more in a day than Beck and Limbaugh do in a decade.
ReplyDeleteThey're both morons, but Beck's so crazy over-the-top that you crack up at him in pity every 5 minutes or so, he's like a train wreck you just can't help but watch. Whereas Limpballs isn't even funny, he's arrogant with a big ego and an overinflated sense of himself (and his fat ass, which apparently he used as an excuse to get out of fighting in Vietnam) and fancies himself some intellectual giant, so he's both a dumbass and not remotely entertaining to boot.
Maybe because Limpballs' audience is basically old, fat, lazy white people who wasted their life and don't intend to do anything more with it, but just can't stand all those brown-skinned folk with the gall to move into a country that the whitey slave masters rightfully stole from the other dark-skinned natives 200 years ago, and then righteously enslaved still other darkies to make 'em rich on the plantation.
There was some census report back when I was taking the class, showing something about how Afro-Americans are scheduled to be the majority in Missippi and 'Bama (and much of Bayou country) in about 10 years. (Probably earlier if I could guess, I know dozens of folks from Harlem and the Big Apple movin' down there, it's dirt-cheap and plenty of our people around to help the newcomers onto their feet.) So Limpballs of course used the report to whip up fear in his audience of the tyranny of the new darkie majority. Funny thing is, most listeners especially the white young'uns didn't seem to care, they got better things to do, but the old hypocritical "get y'all gubmint hands off my Medicare" idiots were lighting up the phone lines in hysteria.
I guess idiots attract idiots as an audience.
shady grady-
ReplyDeleteit is funny you should mention Robeson. when i read your comment it made me laugh out loud. it is clear you are a little UNfamiliar with his life story otherwise you might have chosen to evoke a different name. good luck finding a better example. bm devaluing and disrespecting bw has been underway for longer than a minute.
briefly, about his wife:
"While working odd jobs and taking part in professional football to earn his college fees, Robeson met Eslanda "Essie" Cardozo Goode. The granddaughter of Francis L. Cardozo, the secretary of state of South Carolina during Reconstruction, she was a graduate of Columbia University and employed as a histological chemist. She was the first black staff person at Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. The couple married on August 17, 1921, and their son Paul Jr. was born on November 2, 1927."
sounds like a great catch, right?
seems like a good time to mention Kanye Prefers Mutts West's lyric where he mocks bw by "rapping" about a pattern of bm "getting on" after all of the support and efforts of bw and bm then leaving bw for a white girl. the examples of THIS behavior would cause more annoyance with my long comments. lol. so i will just leave it at that.
more on Mr. Paul Robeson:
"Accolades for outstanding acting and singing performances were prevalent during the 1930s in Robeson's career, but his personal and home life were surrounded by difficulties. His wife Eslanda "Essie," who had published a book on Robeson, Paul Robeson, Negro (1930), sued for divorce in 1932. Her actions were encouraged by the fact that Robeson had fallen in love and planned to marry Yolande Jackson, a white Englishwoman. Jackson, whom Robeson called the love of his life, had originally accepted his proposal but later called the marriage off. It was thought by some who knew the Jackson family well that she was strongly influenced by her father, Tiger Jackson, who was less than tolerant of Robeson and people of color in general. With his marriage plans cancelled, Robeson and his wife came to an understanding regarding their relationship, and the divorce proceedings were cancelled."
lol. disrespecting and humiliating your wife WILL cause difficulties in your house! wise men proclaim loudly and rightfully so, "happy wife, happy life."
Mrs. Robeson wrote a book. talk about putting folks on blast and not laying down taking the disrespect quietly. i LOVE her!!!
interesting enough, after the death of his wife, Robeson went to live with his sister...another bw.
yep, bw have a right to be tired of negroes. declaring it out loud will not be silenced by folks saying those of us courageous enough to call it are "bitter", "lonely", or whatever else folks want to call it. the "strong black woman" is dead. maybe now bm can/will step up and become strong?
for the record, i am NOT a Perry fan. HE would be the LAST person i would trust with a superb bw poet/author works. just saying...
"Kimberly Elise is kind of hot - I'd bend her sideways - but this movie is insufferable."
ReplyDeleteUUUUUGH!
hopefully Ms Elise knows how to vet and would run with her finger on the speed dial key to call the police! if you are a bm i strongly encourage you to date out. seriously. bw don't need to be bent any way. bw require respect, love, provision, and protection. your comment violates the first requirement of respect. it is highly UNlikely you will be able to offer any of the rest with that type of comment.
shudders...rather grossed out at the fact that you have CLEARLY rejected the social construct of "gentleman."
He is a Christian and doesn't seek revenge.
ReplyDeleteI think that's the funniest single sentence I have ever read on the Internet.
Comedy gold.
FP, it is clear that YOU didn't even understand that I posted QUOTES from the Courtland Milloy reviews. So perhaps your rantings should be directed at him?
ReplyDeleteIn any event you seem as usual to be so eager to degrade black men you can't even be bothered to READ. That's unfortunate.
You have no clue based on what I think of Robeson based on what I wrote above.
When I use quotes (" " ) or italics and include a hyperlink immediately thereafter, that means I am QUOTING someone...
LOL

You certainly would know. Although it aint right that you disrespect FN on his own blog, you idjut.

ReplyDeleteSome would call it "hateful". There comes a point when you hear the same thing over and over again from the same group of people, you start to hear the nuances and feel the undercurrents of what's being said. Some people put their personal feelings and private troubles into what they're saying. I could go so far as to say it ends up clouding their judgment. Take that as you wish.
Assuming all Black men are dogs who subconsciously destroy Black women and lust after White men does a grave disservice to the young Black boys who have to grow up with this narrative drummed into their heads by bitter, scorned women who were burned by their bad relationship choices. To be perfectly honest, I have no intention of changing your perceptions of Black men. But I will do my best to keep young Black boys from being poisoned by your attitudes so they can grow up to be strong Black men who will respect and adore Black women instead of being resentful and outright abusive towards them.
You wasnt't really reading that guy's comment, were you?

PC, make that two of us. But didn't the Christian bible say an eye for an eye or somethnig like that? Wait, maybe it's turn the other cheek. Now I am all confused.
focusedpurpose, did you like the movie? And was it a realistic depiction of black male female relationships?

Go on and preach Mack. Hold up, let me get you a taller soap box; more folks need to hear this.... OK, carry on.....
Sometimes us black folks just need to talk.
ReplyDeleteyeah, cuz we suck at that. games and tv no prob, but talking and smart conversation...nah.
IF bm could muster the same amount of disdain and plain talk for EACH OTHER that they seem to reserve for bw, wm and others, it would be a new day.
ReplyDeletePERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But that is not going to happen because we are to consumed with ourselves. I see it in my brothers daily.
Why is it that any thing a Black artist does has to represent the entire race?
ReplyDeleteThe title suggest the struggles of a subset of women. "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf " When I saw the play televised, I thought of it a portraying a way of coping with difficult circumstances, not as bashing every black man. Of course their pain may result from a relationship with Black men, they are Black women, but the play was about the women.
I haven't seen the movie so I don't know how it works on the screen or how much has changed for the movie, so I can't comment on it.
An enjoyable read by Ntozake Shange, Betsy Brown
courtland's take on the movie was indeed devastating as was how he sees black males in movies generally. i agree with him. i do think there are marginally better roles in cable shows like treme. marginally. not great.
ReplyDeletei don't think he liked precious, either.
Correction
ReplyDeleteThe title is Betsey Brown
"But that is not going to happen because we are to consumed with ourselves. I see it in my brothers daily."
ReplyDeleteWhy do you say "we"? You are not a brother. Sorry, I know bull s%^$ when I read it.
I can't talk about Perry, but I'm pretty much in agreement with Morelin about Limbaugh/Beck. They do for idiocy, bullshit, and absurdity what steel, glass and concrete did for the Sears tower.
ReplyDeleteThing is, a lot of the people I know who listen to Lame-o and Blimp-o simply do so because they they actually DO talk to them, and the "other side" simply will not. The "other side" will talk AT them, scold them, demand things from them, but never actually addresses them.
Most of them have been taught from day one to emote, think in slogans, and react rather than think from day one of their socialisation. Big surprise that they listen to people like they do.
With Bush, I don't think he dislikes "balck people". The Bush's of the world define "people" by academic credentials, money, power, ruthlessness, usefulness as a friend at this moment, as an enemy the next.
No one else in the world is actually real, they are glimpsed from a window, there to be used for whatever purpose, to privide the adulation so useful to the ego and are tools to the advancement of ones aims.
To the Bush's of the world there aren't really races, it's just like a white flower or a red one, maybe a point of curiosity, but really irrelevant since they are merely there to be used or disposed of (if it is necessary or they get troublesome) at the moment.
Sarge, those were some interesting comments about W, and the folks who like Beckkk.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your two cents on the subject.
I don't think Bush dislikes Black People either, however, I do think he dislikes poor people.
ReplyDeleteI won't see "For Colored Girls." Tyler has too many issues of his own that he injects in every one of his movies that I want to slap him for, much less to go see him wreck one of the seminal black feminist works of the 20th century. Tyler's at it again with his hatred of black, professional women, with his injection of Janet Jackson's character, the tragic, emasculating professional who forces her man to go on the down low due to her making more money than him. This character is not in the original work and is just there to teach black women that "Thou shalt not do better than your black man, otherwise, he'll sleep with men!" (Don't even get me started on my belief that TP is a closeted, self hating gay man and is working through his issues about that.) As for the rest, it's my understanding that the sexually independent character must be punished in his version, whereas in the original, it was about women finally being able to make the choice about their own sexuality. And then there's the horrific illegal abortion ...in 2010.....in New York. Do we really need another anti-choice serenade at thie point? Add to all that, the portrayal of all the black men in it as rapists, murderers and down low homosexuals, and you've got a movie that hates education, self advancement and uppity black women that I just don't need to subject myself to.
ReplyDeleteI've seen multiple productions of the play and read the poems. The play is not about how awful black men are. It's about how wonderful black woman are in spite of some of the things they go through. No one left the play hating black men. They did leave feeling good about themselves, though.
I am not an advocate of bootlegs of movies. I think it's theft. But if anyone out there wants to rip Tyler off, you have my blessing. Anything that cuts the movie train to that hack is alright with me.
i don't think i've ever seen a Tyler Perry product and i'm probably not going to any time soon. i just don't consume a lot of corporate or mainstream american media anymore. the sad part is, any black person who is allowed to become powerful and productive in our current media system is likely making stuff that only reinforces the racist narrative. perhaps i'm wrong about Tyler, but it would surprise me if i was.
ReplyDeletei really enjoy foreign film these days, Asian film in particular. i just watched the movie "Ip Man" about the guy who taught bruce lee how to fight. he lived during the Japanese occupation of china, apparently, and it's a very moving story about a man who rejects violence for its own sake. i recommend it, highly.
I was wondering if y'all had seen this article from the NYT:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/09/education/09gap.html?_r=1&src=me&ref=general
I'd like to hear a discussion. Maybe field will blog about it.
Shut up, AB. I blame 50% of this on you "edjoocaters". Quit bitchin', or get out of the business.
I don't blame TP one bit.
ReplyDeletePeople love to hold on to their stereotypes. Further, they seek instances (real or cinemagraphic) that justifies clinging to said stereotypes.
Tyler is shrewd enough to capitalize on the market that refuses to discard negative stereotypes of blackmen.
I like TP and some of his movies are fantastic (e.g., The Family that Preys, and Why Did I Get Married).
Good morning Field,
ReplyDeleteRe: Tyler Perry's FCG's. First and foremost, it's a movie, lets start right there.
Okay, now, since going to the movies cost so damn much (movie & dinner costs sixty plus bucks) and my hair cut costs $20.00, and gas is so high, and I'm a po black man, I try to cut a few corners. Well, actually, it's my poor excuse for seeing my movie man at the barber shop and buying the movie for 3 bucks. Yeah, I said it, I buy bootleg movies. Hey, I gotta support the neighborhood; Tyler has enough money. And I love my woman's cooking(I don't need 10 dollar popcorn and a 7 dollar pepsi). And, I don't have to sit in the movie with a bunch of negros talking to the screen. Yeah, I said it, negros talking "at" the damn screen like Whoopie and Loretta Devine are in their front room... and Tyler has enough money.
"Carey, did you like the movie?"
Well Field, that's a big question. Let me put it like this. When I think about my car, my house, my lady, or my mother, there are lots of things I like about each of them. Yet, it goes without saying that sometimes, each of them have given me the blues. More importantly, each of them have a purpose or function in my life. Consequently, if someone were to ask me if my house was "good", or if my car was "good", or if my lady was "good", I'd stop and ask them to qualify their question. Having said that, I am not one of those individuals that goes to movies to "learn" about the social ills of our country, or how to treat my woman. If that's my source of reference to move me to a higher plain, I will continue to be lost in space.
It always gets me when people say a certain movie makes "us", black men, or black woman, look "bad". A damn movie has no bearing what so ever on how I "look" or appear to others. If someone based their opinion of me, solely on a damn movie, then that person is an idiot from the jump.
Okay, let me stop... I'm getting fired up. I'll have to come back with my take on the movie. But be forewarned, I am an armchair movie critic. Yep, I am the type of negro that goes to film festivals. Uh huh, been to the Telluride Film Festival several times. So, I might be back, but I don't know if this little box has enough space?
I mean, my opinions on movies are given in my midwestern black hick voice, and not some pretentious ass "professional" critic's BS.
I watched the movie For Colored Girls, I....
Hathor:
ReplyDeleteI agree with your comment and will add that the play is also universal in that the women do not necessary have to black women but any woman. I don't understand Tyler's rationale for changing the colors in the play, but in the play each woman wore a color symbolic of their experience. I can't remember, but the color red represented domestic abuse. Feel free to correct on this. It's about the women. I also agree that black people are not a monolithic group and we have different experiences and believe they should be expressed on film as well. I think Perry has a myopic viewpoint when it comes his films. His characters do lack depth considering that human beings can be very complex and conflicted. Perry take complex subject matter and turn into something trifling. What I mean he manages making something utterly insignificant. His films could be culturally and socially important, but I don't think that's his goal. Meanwhile, I hope for more films like Eve's Bayou.
I am a fan of the choreopoem; for all men (and women) I suggest you read it before you see the movie, its a short read. Some of the deeper parts of the choreopoem in the movie were chopped and screwed, belittled to just references that didnt blend well. The characters would be in full-on TP mode and then break into these poetic discourses that seem to come from nowhere. (At the onset of one poem the man sitting next to me sighed and said under his breathe "what's up with the poems?") Felt very forced.
ReplyDeleteIt's one thing to decide you want to make movies and study it down to a science/art, like Spike. Whether or not you like Spike, you have to respect his passion. TP had great material to start, a great cast, money, and yet still fell short of giving it its due. I dont think I'll be tricked into seeing another TP movie again.

ReplyDelete"Can anyone name a movie that came out recently starring a black man who wasn't a sociopath?"
You have a point; Hollywood seems to cater much more to bw than bm, and bw apparently want to see movies that reinforce the notion that all bm are awful.
On the other hand, when Hollywood needs a character to represent God, it is always a black man.
For the past 20 years at least, Hollywood seems to make the same movies and TV shows, over and over again.
The lack of diversity in ideas and viewpoints in our culture reflects the fact that it is a very small, undiverse group of individuals in Hollywood and the publishing world that are gatekeepers to what we see, and that these gatekeepers hue to a very narrow, conformist vision of what can be produced.
Although I hate the idea of giving money to Murdoch and his empire I have to say that I wish Soros would buy airtime and maybe a whole hour to debunking Beck and his lies. Maybe just a commercial but something that refutes what one of their biggest stars says. Fight fire with fire, my man didn't survive the holocaust just to be punked by that moron.
ReplyDeleteWow Field there is some real eloquence on this thread. You threw out a lot of things at once.
ReplyDeleteOn the Colored Girls movie I vibe with Chicago Dyke, I don't think I want to see Tyler Perry mess up what I have held as a very good piece of art for quite some time.
I have had the pleasure of meeting the author of the original play and the person I got to talk to and interview and share a drink with at that time would have raised holy hell at the thought of someone tampering with her work.
I guess times have changed and maybe she is satisfied with Tyler Perry's treatment.
I am like some other folks; tired of movies that either purposely or subconsciously bash black men. An
d I disagree with my friend who said that movies don't influence the way people think or that it doesn't matter what folks think.
It surely does help when one is applying for that job that the person doing the hiring doesn't think that all folks that look like you are lazy, unproductive fools.
Everything counts, whether we want to acknowledge it or not. Negative portrayals of black folks sure don't advance our interests.
And I disagree with this black man vs black woman paradigm. We are not one another's enemy, capitalism and its partners racism and sexism are our real enemy.
And why would anyone expect the black male to be better than the white male who has consistently acted like a jerk toward women over the years? Most black men learned about maleness indirectly through white men. So what do you think we learn?
What all these negative movies like Precious and many of Perry's works do is allow the majority community to project their disfunction on black folks.
And black folks are dealing with the psycological as well as the social impact of racism. But we have gotten so blinded by our material progress that we think there is no residue from that sneaking suspicion that creeping feeling that many folks in the greater society consider "us" as second class at best and at worst just some nuisance like "other."
Hell we even catch ourselves arguing with some fool who wants to pretend that racism and unequal opportunity still exists!
So we should save all the rage for the real enemey of black people and humanity. Black folks are just working out their craziness, which will only go away when we get rid of what actually ails us at the roots. Its not us or one another those are only symptons!

ReplyDeleteI wish Soros would buy airtime and maybe a whole hour to debunking Beck and his lies.
George Soros has amassed a personal fortune of over $7 billion, primarily through activities such as currency manipulation and hedge fund management. All told, Soros' foundation network made an estimated $5 billion worth of grants between 1979 and 2007. Soros' worldview is that "America is a troubling if not sinister influence in the world, that the War on Terror is a fraud and terrorists are misunderstood freedom fighters, and that markets are fundamentally unjust." Kind of a funny view for a man that has billions in those unjust markets. One could speculate on his motivations.
He has been very active funding political causes over the past 30 years, promoting the view that America is institutionally an oppressive nation; promoting the election of leftist political candidates throughout the United States; opposing virtually all post-9/11 national security measures enacted by U.S. government, particularly the Patriot Act; depicting American military actions as unjust, unwarranted, and immoral; promoting open borders, mass immigration, and a watering down of current immigration laws; promoting a dramatic expansion of social welfare programs funded by ever-escalating taxes; promoting social welfare benefits and amnesty for illegal aliens; defending the civil rights and liberties of suspected anti-American terrorists and their abetters.
Now I'm sure that's all fine and dandy for a leftist like you who believes that America is irredeemably evil and supports the overthrow of the current regime, but don't those who feel differently (like Beck) have the right to point out just what Mr. Soros has been up to? Don't you want the same level of transperancy for the activities of Mr. Soros that you might want for, say, the Koch brothers? No private citizen has had more of an affect on American political life than George Soros. I thnk it would be a good thing if more people realized just how big an affect that has been.
@ Mellaneous, excuse me, did I miss the flyer? When did those mystical "ambiguous" folks you are referring to, ever love you? I mean, did I miss the call that said you've (we've) been loved?
ReplyDeleteYou're woefully missing the point. Granted, if you act a damn fool (YOU), you should be concerned about how others address you. But come on, if a person gets their knowledge of a race or individual from a damn movie... again, THAT person is an idiot. Consequently, if someone worries about that fools opinion, than hey, what does that say about them?
You comment carries no weight unless you're looking through the eyes of white folks. Case in point, you have read the hundreds of comments in Fields posts... haven't you? Well, what can you discern about black men, black woman, and a race as a whole, based on those comments? And then, what does the "white man" think about YOU, or blacks as a whole.
I would suggest you ponder those questions.
In short, maybe you live someplace in which ever white person has told you that they love you, so now you don't want Tyler Perry messing up your good thang? Maybe you don't want them good white folks to see your bad side?
CareyCarey - You know you're my fam and a bag of chips - but Mell's got a point on this one. The issue is that far too many white folks ARE idiots, and get their perception of Black and Brown people from what they see in movies, TV or what FOX tells them.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, most of White Middle America are unobservant morons, or at least don't analyze available data and think beyond their own small town universe.
Tyler Perry is a Black dysfunction porn pimp.
ReplyDeleteHe thinks that because he's so dysfunctional that all Black people are as well. I think Oprah falls into this category too.
....to continue.
ReplyDeleteThe rather ridiculous movies that Tyler Perry and others have produced sends a messages to the larger culture of who and what Black people are.
Yes, rational, modern people should not take their image of people off of television. But, we're dealing with Americans - who aren't known for rational analysis.
I think we all have levels of dysfunction some are more severe than others. I don't have a problem with dealing with topics such as domestic violence, abortion, homosexuality, incest, etc because they do exist within the black community, so I don't have problem with bringing it to film. Eve's Bayou dealt with topics such as race, philandering, a daughter who has sexual feelings toward father, but it was a well-done movie. My problem with Tyler Perry is not a good director, writer, and his acting is annoying. I was glad that Spike acting his films because can't either, but he's a good director. Perry butchered a significantly culturally important play and turned it into one his one-dimensional tragically bad films. He will continue to make bad films for as long as folks continue to see them. Let me tell you, if his films were not making money, Perry would have been gone a long time ago.
ReplyDeleteLAC--you might try asking any of your white friends how many of them have ever even seen a TP movie. not many, i would guess.
ReplyDeletewhat is more damaging than the images the few whites who might see it, i would think is how a black man reflects back images like this to his own race. not that whites will suddenly believe it's all true and accurate. obviously TP thinks it is!
LAC, you know we will never confuse our (me and you) opinions of each other, or the respect we have of each other, based on a difference of opinion on this issue.
ReplyDeleteI know what she was trying to say, but my question is, what can you do about those idiots? Really, what affects will their opinions have on the issue or issues? More importantly, what can we REALLY do to change their minds?
Think about that. If a person is so shallow (or stupid)to define a race or a person by a movie or any other limited "source", that person will never be moved. They will be so entrenched in that opinion until they die. Ignorance is a progressive disease.
Consequently, to focus on them is a fools errand.
In the end, in reality, you or I never know what a person is "thinking", hence, my "looking through the eye's of white folks". I don't know if the person is an idiot, a damn fool, or a racist. As long as I am satisfied that I am doing the right thing, I am not going to worry myself with.. could-be's.
When a person raises their hand and shows me/us their hold card, then we can attack their issue (that issue). Or leave them with their mess.
I try to stay away from the cynical approach. If the "criticism" has no real solutions, ie, Could-be's and should-be's, that don't work for me.
Oh, and btw, I love your style like a pig loves slop. so we cool.
Val said: "Tyler Perry is a Black dysfunction porn pimp. He thinks that because he's so dysfunctional that all Black people are as well. I think Oprah falls into this category too"
ReplyDeleteI say that's pure BS, that can not be qualified. Tyler Perry is a very intelligent man, that's working his craft the best he knows how. How in the heck can you say For Colored Girls qualifies him as a porn pimp?! That makes no sense at all.
And, Oprah is what?!
I'll tell you...
This is not an indictment of Harriet Tubman, nor an attempt to minimize her accomplishments. This is about the greatness of Oprah Winfrey.
I said Oprah Winfrey is probably the greatest black woman that has ever walked this earth, and then challenged anyone to bring a contender. A wonderful and knowledgeable man stepped in the door with Harriet Tubman in tow. I said, nig*a please.
Don't take this wrong but I said Harriet Tubman couldn't shine Oprah's shoes.
Lets be real about this, 99 out of 100 people couldn't tell you 1 iota of Harriett Tubman's accomplishments. Don't believe me, ask it, try it, see how you like it?
Many "might" say she's an old black slave that lead some negro on the underground railroad. Some might even say she's Ozzie's wife. Some ARE going to say she was the woman that refused to give up her seat on that bus.
Really, the fact that several individuals can not relate to Harriet Tubman, and knows little, or nothing about her, gives a small clue to her inability to wear greatness. She may have championed a cause, and consequently, was a bone for those who wanted to champion a black person in American history, but....
Great is reserved for those that far exceed the accomplishments of others and spreads their "wealth" and "knowledge" along the way.
Greatness is reserved for those that break through the glass ceiling and then puts that ceiling in the basement. Greatness is reserved for those that have the courage and wisdom to withstand attacks from the front & the back, from the rich & the poor, from BLACKS & WHITES. Great is reaching back to give back. Greatness is reaching back to a land that most blacks could call home. Some call it the motherland.
Although money is not the road to happiness, it's great that Oprah has given hundreds of millions of dollars to causes that nobody else dared to attack or even mention. Great is a person that can win the approval of others in spite of their skin color. Oprah stands alone in her greatness. She has exposed the world to more intelligent and gifted black folks than anyone in the world.
Although many women have done great things, those accomplishments pale in comparison to those of Oprah Winfrey.
Her greatness extends beyond the boarders of America. Oprah is the GREATEST of them all. There are no challengers to her crown. Not yet anyway.
Haters will hate, and they only wish they had a tenth of Oprah's courage and accomplishments.
bush has a long history of 'revenginating' himself over perceived slights. Placing 'christian' labels on a product does not change the product...unless one is living in magical thinking land.
ReplyDeleteSoros...Jew...furrin...doing things BillyBoBob can't quite understand....must be he'sup ta eveel.
Here's a hint for clewless...not every thing that the US does is wrapped in righteousness and gawdliness 'cause we does it. Can you wrap those two cells around the US support for the Argentine junta that disappeared thousands? Can you image the hatred others feel when Businessman Babbitt comes to town and orders you about? Just because something is beyond your ken...does not make it evil...in fact, you could use Occam's Razor and ask what is the more likely and simple explanation for your inability to understand what Soros does...and why there is a strong need to demonize a rich Jewish person.

ReplyDeletethis is a surprisingly detailed analysis of TP and whether white people go to his movies.
doesn't get much into his negative black stereotypes but kind of praises him for white stereotyping.
and what of "artistic merit?"
also claims spike doesn't like TP.
quotes a NYT stat that 4% of TP's audience is white and claims that is "too high."
shady grady-
ReplyDeletecalm down and RE-read what i wrote. don't be so emotional my friend.
i understood perfectly well that you were quoting someone else. now, once you have control of your emotions, understand that i am simply pointing out that IF you knew more about Robeson, you might not have mentioned him in trying to make your point. you would have read that and with the full knowledge, decided to go a different route to make your point. if one put Robeson's life story on the big screen, it would just be ANOTHER movie about a bm devaluing and disrespecting a bw.
your quote was just a BAD MOVE, for those of us that love history and don't just view it from a male-identified point of view. i have ALWAYS been fascinated by the lives/experiences of the BW, that folks choose to ignore. i simply pointed that out. i didn't indicate you wrote the original piece. i addressed you because YOU chose to reference it when trying to make a point about how well bm treat/respect/value bw and your desire to see that depicted on the big screen. LOL. got it now?
interestingly enough as kanye i prefer mutts west continues to melt down publicly, the first thing non blk folks point out is how emotionally undisciplined he is. West, frankly, behaves like a fatherless male.
my willingness to call it out, does NOT equal "degrading" bm. quite a few bm degrade themselves by their shameless behavior and the bold ridiculous excuse making. "good" bm allow themselves to be thrown into the mix by their silence, which folks read as consent. their silence is an example of the time when silence is NOT golden. the "good" bm seem to prefer lifting their voices when it can conveniently be directed at EXTERNAL factors. i remember as a young girl folks being concerned that white supremacists were gearing up for a race war. now, how convenient is it for them that bm are perfectly willing to destroy other bm, bw and bchildren? be clear, i have ZERO problem calling out their female footsoldiers on the participation and cooperation with the carnage and excuse making.
@ piney joe-
"You have a point; Hollywood seems to cater much more to bw than bm,"
um, hollywood degrades BOTH bm and bw CONSISTENTLY. maybe you missed hollywood's propensity to pair bm with ANYONE but a bw trend? i guess, if it doesn't hurt you as a bm it is easy to miss it. when bw are not being ignored to death, bw are being unfavorably depicted. i think you miss this fact because quite a few bm DON'T seem to care to understand that one cannot diss one part of the collective without dissing the whole. as i explained to one boldly disrespectful "brotha" that thought the demeaning lyrics of a rap was "funny"; whenever folks want to truly disrespect you, they will talk about your mother. bw are the mothers of the black nation. laughter, silence, indifference, or participation in the disrespect of bw by bm strongly indicates how completely these males have allowed themselves to be dominated and broken as males. until this issue is addressed, they can pretty much forget ANYONE respecting them as men. the same is true with the females that will ONLY get fired up to defend DYSFUNCTIONAL behavior and protect dysfunctional bm. these same females behave like dumb mutes in the face of the nonstop flagrant fouls that bw and bg are assaulted with daily. i see these types as female. it is deliberate i neglect to refer to them as women. others don't respect them as women either. ignore the lip service/words. pay attention to their consistent mistreatment.
""But that is not going to happen because we are to consumed with ourselves. I see it in my brothers daily."
ReplyDeleteWhy do you say "we"? You are not a brother. Sorry, I know bull s%^$ when I read it."
FN, was it the accountability and lack of denial that caused you to believe this poster is lying about being a "brother"? you know, i have met bm that will quietly call it what it is. typically they really care about the woman or girl they are giving the information to, rather than deny, deny, deny what is OBVIOUS to anyone that pays attention even a little to what is transpiring within the black collective. nonblk folks notice as well. i had a wm tell me that it is obvious that the only thing most bfolks have in common is the fact that bm love bm and bw love bm. another non blk man that i am close enough to that we are able to discuss most topics freely, point blank asked me what bw expected OTHERS to do FOR them, since it was bm that defiled them so these days. he likened it to the understanding of law enforcement. if one spends time around police officers, they will tell you the most dangerous situation to walk into is a domestic one. as far as others are concerned, that is what they are seeing among bm and bw...a domestic violence situation, and they don't want to become involved as it is a no win situation for them as outsiders.
my purpose in addressing it is to get those bw and bgs that have allowed themselves to become duped into silently putting up with the verbal and physical assaults, and making excuses for misbehavior to knock it off! life is NOT a dress rehearsal. the time is NOW for bw to seek their own bliss. follow the bm's lead and STOP wasting time trying to prop other folks up. if you want a baby, then by all means have one with a man that will BE a MAN. IF the white women and other non blk women's children are "black", then dang it yours can be, too. and you can be well provided for, protected, and supported in the way you were designed to be as a woman. i speak because i want bw to stop wasting time supporting folks that plainly demonstrate they could NOT care less about bw and the quality of bw's lives...OR the so-called black community OR their own children. come ON now!!!
i won't see TP's movies, Daniels, Singleton, Murphy, Winfrey or any of the others that have been selected and handsomely rewarded to recklessly assault the images of bfolks on a global scale. i won't pay to be disrespected. this attitude carries over to music, comedy, and business transactions. collectively, bfolks have MUCH MORE power than we wield.
Khia-
ReplyDeleteyou NAILED precisely why TP needs to go grab a seat. IF more bw would get the truth of your post things would be a LOT different for bw...and by extension bpeople. a nation will ONLY rise as high as the women of that nation are lifted. because life isn't fair, bw through better choices, will need to lift themselves up. THAT was the point of the original works.
wasn't Eve's Bayon the work of bw director Kasi Lemmons?
Some Anonymous loser sat on his sorry ass and farted out: '"I guess idiots attract idiots as an audience"
ReplyDeleteYou certainly would know. Although it aint right that you disrespect FN on his own blog, you idjut.'
Disrespecting FN? Did you even bother learning to read, dumbass? I was agreeing 100% and then some with FN here about Beckkk and Beckkk's pansy-ass talk-radio types like Rush Limpballs. Make some effort to read what people actually post before making an asshat out of yourself.
This is a great thread. I love all the different view points. I still don't want to see the movie. Hell, now I won't have to.
ReplyDeleteSarge: "I can't talk about Perry, but I'm pretty much in agreement with Morelin about Limbaugh/Beck. They do for idiocy, bullshit, and absurdity what steel, glass and concrete did for the Sears tower. "
ReplyDeletePerfect metaphor in so many ways. The USA has cornered the lucrative market in the Stupidity Industry, and it's a multibillion dollar business here. I wonder how much Limpballs, Beckkk and Hannitty even believe the very right-wing bullshit that they spout. They probably don't care, since they know there's a built-in market for their idiocy and they get to play modern PT Barnum's, capitalizing on the insecurities and inadequacies of clueless, self-destructive old white people who want to blame everyone but themselves for their own failures.
Beckkk in particular is practically a walking caricature of the Stupidity Industry, a potent symbol as well as the bricks-and-mortar of the whole scam, with his tearful outbursts and faux patriotic asshat-waving-a-flag bullshit. Hard to believe that Beckkk and Limpballs have ever actually been with a woman other than the blow-up dolls they keep handy in their radio studios. Not only do they obviously not take care of themselves, but their misogyny (Limpballs' "feminazis" are his most repetitive target), complete lack of respect for anyone else and general stupidity get on the nerves of even many of their own listeners.
If there was one side benefit of that polemics class, it's at least that we all got to know what sorts of companies would be stupid enough to advertise on their shows, and never to buy from them. Not necessarily as an overt boycott of the Beck/Limbaugh advertisers. But more that any corporation putting an ad on one of those shows (or much of Fox News' lineup for that matter) is either a) too stupid to realize that their audience is an army of failed couch potatoes that doesn't exactly represent a solid customer base or b) a bunch of con-artists themselves, likely to sell defective and/or poisonous products to a dumbed-down audience too dumb or lazy to demand quality in what they're purchasing. Hey, wait, maybe there is actually some decent money to be made in that...
Morelin seems like a fighter. Should do just fine in the fields.:)
ReplyDelete"FN, was it the accountability and lack of denial that caused you to believe this poster is lying about being a "brother"?"
Neither. Call it brother Sixth Sense.;)
Carey point well taken.
ReplyDeleteLAC thanks for feeling what I was saying.
Carey - I don't really care what folks think either. But in the long run opinions and impressions do make a difference, esp. for some folks.
And BTW I am a he and I know of what I speak. Allow me to introduce myself. I am a longtime political and community activist who has fought for civil rights, human rights labor rights, opposed US wars and tried to stand up for my poorer brothers and sisters here in the US and abroad.
I am an activist/journalist/minister still in training and taking seminary courses.
And I have contributed quite a bit to this blog and its threads over the last few years so I am not a newcomer to the discussion.
I am pretty consistent I always defend the working class, the poor, black folks and other oppressed folks and am always pointing out that we need to change the very structure that produces so little justice in our current epoch.
So with that said I don't try to spend a lot of time trying to convince folks who have made up their mind but I think its worth the effort for folks who are at least willing to listen.
And make no mistake negative messages about a people do damage. In fact everytime some folks want to oppress some other folks, the first thing they do is use their media, their art, their theatre and propaganda machines to demonize the Others.
this is a really interesting thread. a lot of it is over my head, but i guess the fact that Folk know how to argue about culture and representation hasn't changed. heh.
ReplyDeleteMellaneous, I believe we are on the same page. Thanks for your open and honest opinion.
ReplyDelete"And make no mistake negative messages about a people do damage. In fact everytime some folks want to oppress some other folks, the first thing they do is use their media, their art, their theatre and propaganda machines to demonize the Others"
I agree, when there is an obvious agenda to harm another human or race, that should be addressed. I am going to bow out by saying, I don't think Tyler Perry has a secret agenda. I think he is simply a man that started in theatre, and found something that works. And millions love it.
Oh, and thanks for the conversation. It inspired my latest post. I spit it out while we were going back and forth. So please forgive the numerous errors. I write like I talk, so it gets sorta choppy.

ReplyDeleteThis might surprise some of you, but the only place where bm are not stereotyped and presented as successful and caring is on Fox.
I think Field will agree, even though he is not a fan of Fox News.
Morelin said: "But more that any corporation putting an ad on one of those shows (or much of Fox News' lineup for that matter) is either a) too stupid to realize that their audience is an army of failed couch potatoes that doesn't exactly represent a solid customer base"

It's Econ 101, fool.
"You got it ass-backwards, Morey. The audience for Fox News and conservative talk radio is the Productive Class - the people with jobs and money who make this country work. That's why they can sell so much advertising. "

And, yes, FOX sells a lot of ads. if you are into Gold Line and seed banks and such.
"And, yes, FOX sells a lot of ads. if you are into Gold Line and seed banks and such."
ReplyDeleteAll the way to the bank, Field, all the way to the bank.
Get in the game, or get outta the way.
"Assuming all Black men are dogs who subconsciously destroy Black women and lust after White men "
ReplyDeletewas that a freudian slip? lol.
at no time have i ever said ALL anything about anyone. i DON'T think all bm are dogs or lust after wm...er...ww. lol. YOU had a moment there.
IF bw pointing out the treatment so many face from quite a few bm is "hateful", what would YOU call the treatment? instead of futilely attempting to silence me, maybe you and other could get together and teach young bmales what manhood REALLY is? IF ya'll would get busy on that project, it would be a new day, real soon.
i want bw to vet ALL men they may consider allowing into their lives in ANY way. i want to see bgs begin to understand and employ the process much earlier than they are currently. i want THIS more than i want random bm to receive me warmly.
FN- if TP was in my backyard with the whole cast, performing FOR FREE, i would call the police on them all for trespassing. under NO circumstances will he or any of the other negroes that are for sale get a SINGLE red cent of my money. IF bfolks would STOP FUNDING THE FOOLISHNESS, the foolishness would stop. hollywood has NOT EVER realisticly depicted black americans on anything like a consistent basis. it as if we are the one market that need not be respectfully targeted. hollywood may not have my money as a direct result of this truth. i will not pay to be dehumanized and disrespected.
"Assuming all Black men are dogs who subconsciously destroy Black women and lust after White men does a grave disservice to the young Black boys who have to grow up with this narrative drummed into their heads by bitter, scorned women who were burned by their bad relationship choices."
ReplyDeletelol. what are you talking about? are these black boys that are "having this stuff drummed into their heads" having any type of meaningful relationship with their fathers? WHY would a dad allow his son to be mentally and verbally abused? so you think quite a few bm BEHAVING like they think MAKING babies with anyone that will foolishly hold still long enough is done because WOMEN are teaching them this? ok, i give up with you. to ignore you go. silly, whiny, overly sensitive ladyboys make me tired. i lack the patience required to sugar coat things enough for you to be able to hear it, in your current hypersensitive state. ok?
FN, i don't think the color purple, precious, or colored girls represents ALL relationships for people of ANY color. i think the difference is how black folks go about the dialogue. folks are REALLY content to have other folks just be quiet. suffer silently. i don't suffer personally of the ills depicted in these works. if folks must believe that i do in order to help themselves sleep at night, sobeit. i could NOT care less. i am NOT purposefully focused on silly males' baseless opinions of me.
you boys are seemingly reasonably educated. peep the statistics on the violence and abuse suffered by bw and bgs. peek at WHO is more times than NOT the abuser. then try to understand what it is WITHIN YOURSELVES that would allow you to grip your denial so feverishly. is your "pride" worth more than these women and children's LIVES? i don't think so.
"You got it ass-backwards, Morey. The audience for Fox News and conservative talk radio is the Productive Class - the people with jobs and money who make this country work. That's why they can sell so much advertising."
ReplyDeleteYou are exactly right. I spent a career in selling TV time. Fox's demographic captures all levels, including affluent viewers with money.
Advertisers cannot afford to NOT advertise on Fox if they want to reach the masses to maintain and gain market share for their products. Fox is a ratings powerhouse.
People in the business world know that.
FP, "you boys are seemingly reasonably educated. peep the statistics on the violence and abuse suffered by bw and bgs. peek at WHO is more times than NOT the abuser. then try to understand what it is WITHIN YOURSELVES that would allow you to grip your denial so feverishly. is your "pride" worth more than these women and children's LIVES? i don't think so."
ReplyDeleteFrom the behavior of bm, including the blogger himself, bm's false pride is a very powerful inner force that drives their lives. Your label of bm as "boys" is quite appropriate. One has to be a man to see the foolishness and shortcomings of 'deadly' pride. It kills our love ones.
Thanks for your input and most of all, your truth.
"Most black men learned about maleness indirectly through white men. So what do you think we learn?"
ReplyDeleteok, THAT did it! LOL. i will play along though on purpose.
i think most bm learned from wm that ww are the epitome of womanhood. they learned that ww are to be valued, protected, and provided for AT ALL COSTS. and each time a bm forgets; kanye prefer mutts west, jamie foxx, oj etc, wm AND ww get you RIGHT TOGETHER and will have you apologizing for YEARS. now...
IF more bm would take what they have learned from wm (in keeping with your blame "de ebol wm" premise) about the treatment of ww, remove the ww image understanding that maintaining that image of womanhood is mentacide, insert the bw, and understand she is to be protected, respected and provided for AT ALL COSTS...voila! ya'll would be onto something. wm do this with their ww because they know failure to do so would ENSURE white folks' demise as a people.
i have said it before and will say it again, the ONLY thing ww have that i would want are men that collectively get it. they love themselves enough to protect their woman at ALL costs.
Mr. Mell, you DO know blacks go back to antiquity right and were THE FIRST people? are you REALLY saying WM TAUGHT BM? i guess when an excuse will do ANY OLD excuse will do. you are on the plantation speaking to field and house slaves. i am a maroon visiting with focused purpose. so...
the plantation is an appropriate setting to get real with yourself, tell the truth and shame the devil. you may consider amending your statement, in the interest of truth, to say that the slavemaster has broken his slaves SO totally that NOW the broken, dominated, male slave now treats his bw much like the slavemaster did times of slavery. bm now treat bw as bedwenches and belly warmers (babymamas and playing housemates, as if they were built to sustain violence be it verbal or physical; unfit for respect, provision, protection, or marriage. quite a few bm thomas jeffersons (r tinkle time kelly) can't get enough of the little sally hemings among us today. like jefferson he and those like him move with impunity through their victims.
getting more bw to snap out of the cooperating stupor in their own exploitation is my goal. if it ticks folks off that benefit from the status quo, sobeit. i will make you folks a deal that think i should be quiet...the day bm stop crying out against racism will be the day i CONSIDER being silent about sexism, intraracial violence against bw, misogyny, and the many other ills black women and girls are expected to silently face daily. notice i said consider...
Mr. Mell, more bm need to learn about being men from THEIR FATHERS. this project is completely something bm can control! a part of being a man is doing what it takes to provide for and protect your women and children. that could be a place to start. wm have clearly demonstrated that they will steal PEOPLE and rob them of their culture, native language, human dignity and lands in order to provide for and protect THEIR white women and children. you mean to tell me you didn't learn THAT in all your learning, Mr. Mell?
hope this comment makes it through. lol. i am off to enjoy my evening. may you all do the same.
Field, thanks for letting me visit:-)
@Wingnut. I too believe in transparancy but I think the Koch brothers are more dabgerous as they attack regulation aimed at helping curb pollution and such. I agree with many of Soros' ideas as opposed to right winged ideas which are dangerous.
ReplyDeleteTyler Perry is about making money. If he were to put out nuanced, complex, in other words more REALISTIC movies instead of cartoonish crap, it would cut into his bank.
ReplyDeleteDumbed down, in your face stuff sells. Look at Fox News for an extreme example.
The sad part is he is giving ammunition to people who want to see him dead, and some of colored folks are unwittingly going along.
He also needs to come out of the closet once and for all. I think that's a big part of his issues right there. Yeah I said it.

Crown also got a mash-up of worn-out anecdotes from previously published memoirs written by his subordinates, from which Bush lifts quotes word for word, passing them off as his own recollections.
ReplyDeleteSomewhere, far far away, in another galaxy, one really has to believe that strange beings are loving the ground that George Bush walks upon.
I honestly can only laugh at Bush cause he's as hilarious as they come.
FCG was a decent movie, easily one of Tyler Perry's best. I didn't really understand the film from beginning to end, so it's probably best if I read Shange's book, as others advised.
"ok, i give up with you. to ignore you go. silly, whiny, overly sensitive ladyboys make me tired. i lack the patience required to sugar coat things enough for you to be able to hear it, in your current hypersensitive state. ok? "
ReplyDeleteAny opinion that runs contrary to your personal narrative you dismiss as the whining of the "overly sensitive" opposite sex. I see.
You can't have a conversation with someone who isn't willing to LISTEN.
"From the behavior of bm, including the blogger himself, bm's false pride is a very powerful inner force that drives their lives. Your label of bm as "boys" is quite appropriate. One has to be a man to see the foolishness and shortcomings of 'deadly' pride. It kills our love ones."
You lost me when you started attacking the Field. If this was any other blog, you'd be shown the door right about now. Have some respect when you're a guest in someone else's house.

ReplyDeleteLAC--you might try asking any of your white friends how many of them have ever even seen a TP movie. not many, i would guess.
what is more damaging than the images the few whites who might see it, i would think is how a black man reflects back images like this to his own race. not that whites will suddenly believe it's all true and accurate. obviously TP thinks it is!
Maria, let me say this - one of my co-workers, a white woman for Northern CA commented to me how she loved TP movies.
There are plenty of white people who watch Tyler Perry's TV show (since he's all over TBS) and consume other forms of media that portray Black people (even so-called middle class Black folks) as perpetually dysfunctional.
Personally, I think N'Sange is just happy to get a royalty check - sister's been in the game long enough and deserves her due. But I hope people don't take what ever crap TP spews (and its probably crap, given the man's hackneyed track record) for the play.
LAC, I did a post on this subject, and I've been taking a beating.

Yep, one touched on the white viewer.
One left a "BOOK" on Tyler's images of black men. LAC, I been taking an ass whoopin in my own house. And check this, Francis Holland even slapped Oprah and Obama... in my house! You know I love Oprah and my president.
Hey, I was on a blogRadio program with a popular film blog. Well, one of the guest is a writer for Ebony magazine. His "peoples" told him that N'Sange was/is not very fond of Tyler's final product. In fact, to support that statement, he said her sister lives on his block and they've had a chat... or two.
Royalty checks do make sense.

ReplyDeleteT.P. has again proven that he can take "Step&Fetchit" principles and make money in the 21st century. Good job........you missed a spot!

ReplyDeletei will see and reviwe the film asap...i hate public theaters so i see everything very late in my living room...
ReplyDeletebut i am sure i will love it
i adore tyler perry and his films
and i adore the book
unlike most black men, i can handle truths about gender issues/femicide etc
Tyler Perry hasn't proved he can make a single movie that shows Black Women in a good light.. Every movie he comes out with makes Black women look like drama queens or worse... I think he's gay to be quite honest.
ReplyDeleteHe should come out the closet because he has this loathing of Black women. I don't like the title of the movie either.
I guess it okay for white people to refer to us a colored since Tyler Perry does it....Just like his last movie "I can do bad all by myself" he's basicly saying Black women are better off single...it seems to me he can't stand seeing Black men and Black women together..and why is he making movies geared towads Black women when he can't even identify as a black women. He's a male! who's never been "married" yet he comes out with all these movies that make it seem like he a "married Black Women" I'm confused myself.....
He should start making flims geared towards "Black males" somthing postive maybe I'll go see one of his sad movies then...
That way it's more believable.
Kimberly Elise is "kind of" hot.....You sound like your afraid to say she's attractive.
ReplyDeleteShe's not "kind of" hot she's beautiful -
"I'd bend her sideways"
What does that mean..???
