No exit in sight.

I few months ago I was driving down to Louisiana to play golf with some friends of mine. I had a craving for a bag of those pecan nuts that they serve at Buc-ee's. (If you know you know). Anyway, I got distracted and missed my exit. I was pissed and frustrated because there were all kinds of signs along the way telling me where to get off. The farther down the highway I got, the more anxious I became, because I was intent on going back and getting some of those damn pecans. I kept looking for an off- ramp to turn around, and it seemed like it took  forever for me to finally find one.

I imagine that's how Donald Trump had to have  been feeling as he tried to get out of this mess of a war that he got us into with Iran. We all know why he did it in the first place, to distract us from the Epstein files and all the ugliness that comes with it. By all objective measures this has been a disaster of epic proportions. The real winners were the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. Not only did they realize their strategic hold over the Strait of Hormuz, but they also realized that  they could pretty much destroy the world's economy and make a ton of money by holding the world's shipping markets hostage. We dropped bombs on Tehran and destroyed their buildings, but they will make enough money when this is all over to build bigger and better buildings. We took out their leaders, but they have already replaced  them with younger and more fanatical ones.

No wonder Trump was dying for an off- ramp.  He saw himself getting deeper and deeper into something that was only going to make things worse for his flailing presidency. So, as a result, he made a deal. A very bad deal, but one that allowed him an off- ramp. He declared victory and lied that the war was a success, but at this point, he had no choice but to do that. He had to say something to save face.

Iran will now add billions to their coffers, they will maintain power over the Strait of Hormuz, and they will keep their subterranean stockpiles of near-bomb grade (60% enriched) uranium. Yep, those scuba tanks filled with thousands of kilograms of highly enriched uranium is still there. In the end, we spent billions of dollars, sacrificed 13 American lives, and the lives of hundreds of Iranians (including 120 school girls), all for naught.

I took the off-ramp and got back to Buc-ees's in no time. It just seemed longer, because I was so anxious to sample the pecans.  Mr. Trump will not be so lucky, he took an off-ramp, but he is going to find that the treat he is looking for will be nowhere in sight.

“We all know why he did it in the first place, to distract us from the Epstein files and all the ugliness that comes with it.”

He also did it because the Republican establishment are “all-in” on supporting Israel, and for all intents and purposes consider it the 51st state, for no good reason whatsoever —and Israel’s leader said we should do it.

And I think Netanyahu’s words to Trump were truly seductive. He told Trump that Iran’s leadership were in this dire, enfeebled state, and just a little bit of bombing would topple them. We’d be rid of this rotten, defiant, little regime that had flipped the bird at America ever since they took our embassy staff hostage in ‘79. The Iranian people would be free of a genuinely oppressive government. And Donnie would be a huge hero, having done what a bunch of American presidents before him could not do. Finally, he would have done something great that nobody could deny.

But then it all completely fell apart, because it was based on a lie about the weakness of Iran. This was a lie that appealed to Trumpism, which is partly an American exceptionalist nationalist misunderstanding:

The United States is the most powerful nation in the world (true). Therefore the United States is actually all-powerful and able to bend every other country to its will, and other presidents before Trump were just too weak and wimpy to wield this power for the benefit of everyday Americans (an insane fantasy).

Trump just does not get that making other countries do things by force either comes at a very high cost, or is sometimes impossible, which is why previous US leaders have relied on diplomacy and allies and pursued international institutions and a stable world order — basically all that “globalist” stuff that Trump considers dumb and useless.

In this analogy, I don’t think Trump gets his pecans at all. He only gets to leave the highway (which is leading someplace very bad), and has to go home empty-handed, wishing he’d never taken this damn trip in the first place.

Fergus and his Iranian adventure has exposed a few things about the world as it is today that were maybe deniable up until his spectacular military loss to a third rate country.
Military might doesn't work to achieve political ends any more.
I guess it could be argued that Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan and Iraq were all just unlucky losses due to mismanagement or local political circumstance, but really they are emblematic of the reality that war isn't countries lining up and shooting at each other, and hasn't been for a long time.
That means that countries and their leaders who try to exert influence through military might are going to be left behind by countries and leaders who understand how things actually work, much like countries and leaders who still cling to obsolete forms of energy are being left behind by countries and leaders who embrace how energy is now produced and will be produced in the future.
Also, the way war is fought is changing rapidly. Russia didn't achieve its aims in its attack of Ukraine, either, and Ukraine has invented defense strategies on the fly that have stopped Russia in its tracks and begun to cripple it economically, much like Iran used the Strait of Hormuz to exact economic harm on its attackers.
Fergus isn't the only world leader stuck in the past and laboring under obsolete assumptions of power dynamics, but he is now such a prominant example that this may end up being seen as an inflection point or a paradigm shift or some other such horseshit...
Happy Juneteenth. I miss the epic celebrations they used to throw for it in Oakland.

Field, as usual, this is a superb commentary and quite true. As we look at the spectacle created by "commander in chief" one can't help thinking about the following:
Remember the old commercial that said," You should have had a V8" ? Well that referred to tomato juice. But... regarding the debacle and the recent mess made over Iran, one could say,
"You should have had a D..E.I." And then, all of those "so called" incompetent black and female military leaders that were fired or denied promotions could have given better strategic and some well thought out military advice needed that would never have resulted in the handing over of the Strait of Hormuz.and giving even greater power to the very regime the US tried to weaken. The Iranians are probably laughing all the way to the bank right now

    Yeah, that wouldn’t have helped.

I’m not disagreeing that Hegseth is purging the upper ranks of the military of women and minorities because he is a bigot. He is absolutely doing that. However, I can guarantee that the white senior officers in the military didn’t recommend that Trump attack Iran, either.

This was an ideological decision driven by Trump, Republican politicians, and Netanyahu, who have an extreme hatred of Iran to the point of derangement, and who ignored all of the military planners telling them it was a dumb idea. They had all the advice they needed to avoid this error, but they didn’t care.

Honestly, I think he was pandering from the beginning, before ever being elected. He basically promised mutually exclusive stuff to different constituencies, so, naturally, he couldn’t keep his promises while in office.

But also, yes, it was really dumb as a left-of-center politician to try to satisfy the bigoted a$$holes by offering to moderately abuse immigrants and people on welfare. You won’t ever win over those voters — they’ll just vote for the actual fascists, who will deliver the extreme abuse those a$$hole voters really demand.

Bottom line: Stay in your damn lane, and accept that, while some compromises are necessary, you simply can’t and shouldn’t try to please literally everybody.

A federal judge has thrown out Justice Department grand jury subpoenas aimed at Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and his allies, calling them an abusive and retaliatory process to punish Walz based on his refusal to assist President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

In a blistering ruling, U.S. District Judge Patrick Schiltz said there was “no doubt” that the subpoenas were issued to damage Walz — part of what he said was a pattern of Trump administration efforts to use criminal process to punish the president’s adversaries.

“Initiating a criminal investigation in order to harass political opponents or to coerce them into taking official action — particularly official action that the federal government cannot directly require those political opponents to take — is a blatantly unlawful and unethical use the grand-jury process,” Schiltz, who was appointed by George W. Bush, wrote in a 29-page ruling unsealed Monday.

EVs don’t have a poor safety record in general, only the ones made by Elon.

And that’s because Elon insists on inserting unnecessary, flashy, attention-grabbing features into his cars at the expense of safety. Personally, I think it’s a reflection of his warped, inflated ego. Much as with Trump and his ugly ballroom and his Arc de Failure.

No, it’s the car AND hatred of the car company owner’s revolting political views/behavior.

I wouldn’t buy a Tesla. Its completely unnecessary self-driving feature will crash it into a tree, and after it bursts into flames, its completely unnecessary flush door handles will trap you inside to roast to death.
