Down Goes MAGA!

Well damn America, I guess you really are fed up with MAGA and their cult leader! I read this somewhere, so I can't take credit for it, but someone said that Pete Hegseth wanted us to see a public execution, and thanks to the midterms elections, we were all able to witness one firsthand.  If that was a football game the refs would have stopped it after the third quarter and invoke the mercy rule. It was that much of a beat down. It was a blue tsunami. To say it was just a wave would not be doing it any justice. Seventy- five percent of Americans will now be finding themselves being governed by Democrats.

So now Democrats will be the majority in the US House and in the Senate, and it's not even close.  They flipped over forty house seats (and counting), and seven in the Senate. That's called a mandate folks, and it's a rebuke of the nasty out of touch brand of politics that the leader of the MAGA movement brought to fore over the ten miserable years that he has been in our lives.  Sixty four percent of voting Americans felt that the MAGA cult leader had his priorities all screwed up, and over forty percent said they voted to oppose him . Imagine the Democrats electing Senators in places like Texas, Kansas, and Iowa. Oh, and Mississippi said hold my beer. They're sill counting, but it's looking like there will be a Democrat representing Mississippi in Washington as well. Oh, and not just any Democrat, a black man! Imagine that. In Mississippi!! (Just a side note on that Mississippi race. The man who is leading that race, Scott Colom, was denied  the chance to become a federal Judge by the woman he is about to beat. Had she not blocked him, she probably would have been going back to Washington. Colom is a very good political athlete, so chances are that if someone else had run they would have lost. I just love when Karma bites the right person.)

Anyhow, as I tend to do to get a good laugh when Republicans are losing after an election, I found myself watching FOX for their reaction on election night, and they didn't disappoint, it was pure comic gold. They were shocked that the nation had such a blanket rebuke of MAGA Republicans, and their brand of politics. They tried to blame it on everything else but the real culprit, Donald J. Trump. He is the one who chose to go to war to cover up the Epstein files, which caused gas prices to go up. He is the one who chose to have masked ICE agents murder innocent American citizens in the streets of our cities. He is the one who chose to slap tariffs on foreign goods, causing the price of every day grocery items to go up.  He is the one who declared war on black folks and our history, and called for gerrymandering districts in order to prevent us from being able to vote. He is the one who thought it was cool to dismantle DEI initiatives meant to level the playing field in corporate America and in institutions of higher learning. He is the one who treated the Justice Department like his personal law firm, and ordered them to go after his political enemies. He is the one who used his office to benefit himself and his family with a level of corruption  never before seen in American history. And finally, he is the one who woke up every morning and posted incoherent screeds against the people in the country who are not a part of his MAGA cult.  So yes, as you can imagine, it was a tough night for the FOX crowd, and yours truly loved every minute of it.

Speaking of black folks, a special Field Negro shout out to my people, who once again helped to save this country from itself. You all put ten toes down and headed to the polls down here in the South in record numbers. And shout out to our white allies who voted with us to make history by selecting four black governors to lead state houses. (I know what you all are thinking, there are five, but sorry, Byron Donalds doesn't count.) America, you all even sent a Muslim to the Senate. This gives me hope for us as a nation. Maybe we can actually think for ourselves, and not be beholden to the anger, fear, and extremism that has been wreaking havoc on our politics, and on our day to day existence for the past ten years.

It has all been so exhausting. This past Tuesday Americans simply said, enough!

  1. From an article on Alterner about magat voters having contempt for emotional Dem voters....

Speaking with AlterNet in August, University of Bristol cognitive scientist Dr. Stephan Lewandowksy argued that one can understand supporters of President Donald Trump by understanding their psychology as analogous to that of internet trolls.

"We know that trolls take pleasure in trolling, which means getting other people upset," Lewandowsky told AlterNet. "And I think that's what we're observing here — this is basically trolling behavior. So would these people score high on the dark triad? I would think yes, but I don't know of any data that's done a personality profile specifically of MAGA voters. We do have it for trolls, though — I have data on that. People have published research on it, and the similarities are just overwhelming. So I'd be very surprised if these were well-adjusted, nice people."

    Sorta 'splains anymoose.

It’s such a huge relief to see voters finally reacting to the insanity. There’s been over a decade of Trump polluting our national politics (a decade-and-a-half if you go back to his lies about Barack Obama and his birth certificate), and this whole time I’ve been frustrated that people couldn’t see through this obvious con artist and sociopath. Trump’s success, to me, was proof that much of the US population was far stupider than I had previously believed.

Actually, to be more accurate, I think many of these people are “politically stupid,” not stupid in the absolute sense. They are apathetic about voting (about one-third of eligible voters simply don’t bother, historically) and if they do vote, they don’t stay politically informed and they don’t get their news from credible sources. And all this has been dramatically worsened by the invention of the Internet, supercharging disinformation.

All of which means that things have to get really, really bad before some voters catch a clue and show up to put a stop to it. So while I’m overjoyed that we are now at a moment when that has finally happened, I wonder what can be done to maintain that engagement so that political disasters like this don’t happen again.

I enjoy reading your column. Naturally, I agree with you. You tell it like it is. Unfortunately, I live in Arkansas which has yet to wake up and smell the roses. And there are a few others who are still trying to turn the clock back. I may not live long enough to see this happen. But for right now I feel better about our nation than I have in years. Thank you.
