Render unto Caesar.

Julius Caesar styled himself as a servant of the republic, claiming to speak for the people even as he disregarded laws and norms to govern by caprice. The Roman republic did not survive him.

The second Trump administration has revealed American Caesarism in nearly full bloom. Despite ambitions to fundamentally change the course of the country, this administration has no real legislative agenda. Instead, the president governs by executive orders, emergency decrees, and extortionate transactions, using his power to reward his friends and punish his enemies. He’s launched foreign military adventures and full-blown wars seemingly based on personal whim, and has made the military a political prop and a tool for domestic law enforcement. With Congress sidelined and the courts reluctant to check Donald Trump’s excesses, America has been left with what some legal scholars have described as an “executive unbound”—and with a president who threatens to supplant the republic in all but name.

Trump’s most fervent supporters justify his approach in terms reminiscent of Caesar’s. The White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller has remarked that “the whole will of democracy is imbued into the elected president.” Many Republicans argue that Trump’s policy preferences deserve support because he has a “mandate,” and they heap scorn on the “unelected” judges who have had the temerity to rule against him." {More}

The excerpt above is from an article in The Atlantic written by  Gregg Nunziata. In it he writes about how the legal right has spent decades empowering the presidency, and how they must now reckon with the monster that they helped to create. As someone who has dedicated his life to studying, practicing, and understanding the law, I shudder at what I see happening in the legal profession. The highest court in the land is controlled by a majority that cares more about the man who put them there than they do the law and upholding the Constitution.

Mr. Trump is allowed to govern the way he does, because his handpicked court and the feckless right-wing politicians who fear him, will do nothing to stop him.

I hate to say it, but it's only going to get worse. The war in Iran will not be ending anytime soon, and I fear that by the end of this summer America will be closer to a literal civil war than we could have ever imagined. It's gotten that bad. And the man who is singularly responsible for all this division and turmoil is none other than Donald J. Trump. America's own version of Julius Caesar.

"Men really believe what they wish to be true"

"If you must break the law, do it to seize power"

Those two quotes were attributed to Caesar, not  Mr. Trump. But at this point, who can tell the difference?

The Virginia Supreme Court has OFFICIALLY DENIED Democrats’ move to reinstate the 10D-1R Congressional map — refusing to pause the lower court order, which BLOCKS certification

    GREAT! A legal win!

This means the map stays blocked while legal challenges play out.

Do the right thing and STRIKE IT DOWN FULLY .

Florida redrawing + this map being DOA would be absolutely enormous for the midterms.

Nah, that wasn't Obama, it was Nixon. He exploited cultural fears and resentment for electoral gain. Nixon deliberately appealed to Southern white voters and working class citizens and widen the gap between those who supported social progress and those against war. Trump is just a seven times seven result of Nixon's strategy. The sin has multiplied. Then again, white folks is just crazy, warmongers, and messy. A group of people who like to start a mess and keep it going 24/7 and project their behavior on others. They act like they don't know how to live and let live. At this point, I ignore them. Let them do them. As long as they don't invade my space and mess with me and mine I don't care what they do.

The more unpopular Trump gets, the more he will flail around and do insane things. I see he is back in “attacking ideological enemies” mode, to distract from the dumb fight he picked with Iran, his mounting failures on the economy, and the growing backlash to his deportation agenda.

He’s launched a bad-faith investigation of private contractors who’ve defrauded the government in Minnesota, which will not be used to deter fraud but instead to defame Democrats and black people (since several of the scammy contractors are Somalis). He’s also started an absolutely ludicrous prosecution of the SPLC, which is apparently designed to please America’s bigots, since nobody else wants this.

And now, today, I noticed that he’s resurrecting his silly vendetta against James Comey for allegedly threatening him by spelling out “86 47” in seashells (via a frivolous prosecution), and his silly vendetta against Jimmy Kimmel for mocking him on TV (via abuse of the FCC’s regulatory powers).

Things will only get dumber, because lashing out is how Trump copes with failure, and he fails a lot.

Trump's vanity is very annoying. I've been thinking about applying for a new passport, since mine expired a while back, and it's completely obnoxious that will now have to get one with Trump's stupid face on it.

Since this clown seems bent on slapping his name on every part of the federal government like he owns it, Democrats should actively take revenge once he is out of office. Not only should his name be taken off of literally everything, but I think they should build an intentionally insulting, literal anti-monument to Trump. Something like a giant bronze Trump baby on the National Mall might be appropriate. Or maybe erect a museum of the worst leaders in history, with Trump featured alongside, like, Hitler and Pol Pot and Vlad the Impaler.

Surely, Trump was lied to in order to get him into this war in the first place, and he was too dimwitted to see through it.

I guarantee Netanyahu was one of the liars, but there may have been domestic actors manipulating him as well. Trump was led to believe that the Iranian government was teetering on the brink, and all the US and Israel had to do was drop a few bombs and it would collapse. Total bullshit.

Is he still being manipulated into believing that he can achieve some sort of victory here, that Iran are going to dismantle their nuclear program? Because the reality is that there is no victory whatsoever to be had; absolute best-case scenario is that the Strait of Hormuz opens and the US goes home empty-handed.

The Supreme Court has ruled that drawing Congressional districts based on race under the Voting Rights Act is UNCONSTITUTIONAL, 6-3

This is a HUGE win, and could have MASSIVE ramifications for the 2026 midterms

Democrats for YEARS have sued over and over again to FORCE states like Louisiana to create black majority districts

Louisiana's map has now been thrown out.

If SCOTUS ends up gutting the act, a DOZEN Democrat districts could flip red overnight.

Looks like the DHS budget shutdown is over. The Dems caved on all their demands a few weeks ago, and came away with nothing. Now, the Republicans in the House have finally ended their temper tantrum after a timeout spent sitting on the naughty step, and, having cooled off enough to come back to reality, realized they’d won. So now they’ve signed off on the deal, and all of the DHS funding will get restored, except for ICE and CBP.

The lack of funding for ICE and CBP is pretty inconsequential, since Republicans will probably manage to restore it through the reconciliation process, and ICE doesn’t even need the money anyway, having received several years’ worrth of funding through the Big Bullshit Bill last year.

Yeah, it’s not a bad idea that the Democrats want to make an effort to win back some of the rural white dude vote (the ones that aren’t completely paid-up MAGA cultists, anyway). The problem is that they don’t seem to do their homework vetting these guys. In particular, those identifying as the “progressives” seem to get so overexcited when some candidate shows up professing very left-wing views, and even more so if he gives off a that “everyman” working-class vibe, that they forget to check the candidate’s background and make sure s/he isn’t completely full of crap, or nuts.

    2. I can certainly relate to being excited by a candidate who says anything else besides the right wing talking points that have supplanted facts in what serves as our news media now, but you have to retain some standards...
I just watched Platner get interviewed by Jen Psaki, and he wasn't scary or horrible. He has some good ideas, and a vision for what needs to be done if Democrats regain power that is sort of crucial. Whether or not he can do anything in support of his vision remains to be seen, and also how he reacts to the inevitable setbacks will be telling.
Democrats as a party can use some youth in their candidates, and with youth will come rookie mistakes, and I sense some of those in him.
Still, got to kind of like a guy who says he's met oysters with more spine than Susan Collins...

No, Ferg, what endangers your life is that you are Donald the fuck Trump and many, many people wish you were dead.
Never mind that Republicans sold T-shirts with "8646" on them during Biden's presidency without causing a wave of assassination attempts or legal pushback.
No, the celebrations that will happen after the Big Beautiful Burial have nothing to to with James Comey and everything to do with how badly you suck.
With all of your wealth and power, you could have been and done pretty much anything, and most of those things would not have inspired a sizable fraction of the population of the world to wish you were dead.
In fact, many of them might have made you a universally beloved figure.
But that's not what you wanted. was it?
So live with the consequences and stop whining about it, dude, you did this.

“Washington Post: Trump and Iran are locked in high-stakes standoff as oil prices hit four-year high.”

It seems like the main reason this crisis isn’t ending is that Trump mistakenly still thinks he can wring some sort of victory out of this, and that’s keeping him from doing what he needs to do, which is give up and go home.

Trump’s inane public statements have suggested that his main delusion is that he has some kind of ace in the hole to achieve victory, via blocking Iran’s oil shipments. Some self-appointed experts (who evidently don’t have any petroleum engineering expertise) have told him that when Iran runs out of oil storage, they will have to shut down their pumps, and then their infrastructure and the underground oil fields themselves, will “blow up,” destroying Iran’s oil industry forever. So Iran’s surrender must be imminent.

This is nonsense. Trump has no such leverage, no magical club to beat Iran with, and so the Iranians could hold out for quite a long time if Trump persists in this delusion, which is very bad news for the global economy.

The reality of Iran’s oil situation (as opposed to Trump’s fantasy) is explained here:

No, the Iranian oil industry isn’t about to ‘explode’

Fossil fuels are a precarious energy source, and the infrastructure is crumbling under the stress Fergus' stupid, stupid war has put on it.

      Delete
    3. The term "minor-attracted person" (MAP) was not invented by a political party, but rather originated within online pro-pedophile advocacy groups, specifically appearing on the Boychat forum in 1998, with the aim of destigmatizing child sexual abuse. The term was later adopted by organizations like B4U-ACT to promote it as a "neutral" alternative in clinical or academic settings.

  63. So Fergus and his massive tax cuts have pushed the national debt above 100% of GDP.
Big numbers by themselves are nothing to freak out about, but the debt wasn't much of a problem before the interest rates on servicing it started climbing during covid.
This, as always, will leave a big fiscal mess for the Democrats to clean up when they get back into power.
Every damn time. Each Republican president (Reagan, Bush1, Bush2 and Fergus) has raised both the deficit and debt, while each Democratic president (Clinton, Obama and Biden) have lowered it.
Fiscal responsibility is a Republican lie designed to cover for their opposition to any Democratic president spending any money on anything.
It is exposed as a lie every time a goddamn Republican gets into the white house and starts spending borrowed money wildly.

Having looked into this a bit, it seems like Spirit has been failing for a while, as the main carriers have been managing to cut fares on seats to compete with Spirit while delivering a slightly better experience. The blocked merger and the Trump-driven spike in the cost of jet fuel were just the final blows that pushed it over the edge.
