Obamaholics Anonymous

"You want answers?........ You can't handle the truth"

~~~Col. Nathan R. Jessup-A Few Good Men~~~
I have a confession to make, I am one cynical son of a bitch. I keep a GPS device in my car because I never ask for directions. I rarely buy shit on sale because I know the price has already been marked up 100%. And if someone says: "jump in, the water is fine"; please believe that I am dipping my toes in that bitch before I jump.
So to all you folks calling me a cynic and labeling me a typical "Negadelphian", tell me something I don't already know.
But my negativity has served me well in life, and I never find myself getting too high or too low. My mind is like a boat that never gets rocked, because I am usually right about what lies beneath the ocean ahead of me.
Now lately I have been catching some heat from you Obamaholics for telling it like it is about your boy. You have been shooting at the messenger. But I want you to know that I have nothing but love for you. In fact, for the next few months, think of this site as the home of Obamaholics Anonymous. Before you comment or post, you can just say hi, I am [insert whatever name here] and I am an Obamaholic. And then you can spill your guts to me and all the other Obamaholics tuning in. You can tell me all about your fears and your disappointments, and why you can't shake your "O" man jones. Hey, I know his presidency is important to you, and if he were to lose.....well the thought of going cold turkey has got to be killing you.
Now don't get me wrong, I think it would be nice if the "O" man won the presidency. Although he isn't perfect. I have issues with him supporting the "Patriot Act"; I have some issues with him not supporting S-14 which would have raised minimum wage, and I have issues with his failure to support S-317 which would have stopped government agents from snooping through our library records. And when he says shit like "I'm not an ideologue, never have been", it's troubling. But unlike a lot of other people, I actually think the symbolism of a Barack presidency would be good. And I think having him in the White House would actually help U.S. foreign policy more than hurt it. But I am also a realist, and I know that the "O" man in the White House won't stop one single crack dealer in North Philly from dealing drugs. "Oh well, there is a black man in the white house, I am going to stop slinging now, cause I know he wouldn't like that" It won't help me or my firm to get one single bond contract with the city. " Hi Mr. City Solicitor, it's me the field Negro, and you have to give me some bond work now because Obama, a black man, is president." Nope, I don't think so. In fact, I am pretty sure that it will be business as usual in Washington, and the folks on "K" Street will be just as busy as they were before. But the typical Obamaholic doesn't want to hear that, because he(she) has bigger plans. The "O" man is the drug that can bring us all together and make us forget all the bad things that has happened to us in the past, and we need him now. Lord knows we need him. We need that Obama hit to feed our addiction. And damn it, some cynical black man posting on a blog called the field Negro will not spoil our show or dull our high.
But listen to me folks: when you do decide to kick the "O" addiction, just remember, the field is here. Think of me as your friendly neighborhood "O" man counselor; willing to give you the tough love and whatever else is needed to cure your addiction.
Now repeat after me: My name is [_________] and I am an Obamaholic.
  1. Field,
    I think you're too liberal by half, but that was a nice cynical post. I'm supporting the O man, though according to electoralcompass.com, as a candidate he is the furthest from me on the issues. I support the brother, I've sent him my money and will send some more, but he is not the savior. But he's qualified, credible and bonus, he's black and I'm down with having someone that looks like me rocking the Oval Office for the sheer brain freeze it will give the planet for all of 15 minutes.
  2. FN,
    You are cracking me up to no end.
    FN,
    I know that you are NOT a ' hater'. And, we aren't down on you. You're just a ' skeptic', and I get that. It's cool.
    Thank you, because you're not a 'hater'. You will be there to soften the blow. You aren't nasty and mean like the ' haters'.
    Just hang in there with us, FN. Let us have the good days. And only lightly tease us in the bad days.
    But, ssshhhhh...I know your secret, FN. You're rooting for the 'O' man....wink wink wink.
  3. I can't agree more. I wouldn't call it cynical, jes common sense. But then again they sayin' the same thing about me they say about you, but for different reasons. See I been saying that they gonna see Obama as Black when it got to crunch time and white folks ain't gonna let no bumpty bump n...(respectin' your blog and not usin' the n word-but they would and do....) be no president.
    I would be shocked beyond words should this race neutral unblack black man become president. I do believe super Tuesday will be call black Tuesday--pun intended-- by Obama folk. Infact I got the post black tuesday blog all written in my head, I'm jes waitin' for the polls to close.
    Now repeat after me: My name is Anonymous and I am an Obamaholic, if McCain is nominated on the other side. The Patriot Act allowed the FBI to share info with the CIA again and vice versa. Clinton had made this illegal in the 90's. I won't hold that vote against Obama. I do admire Obama's optimism and spirit, he will represent me better that the Hillbillys. Stay tough, Field.
    Field, I'm a cynic too. You've got another 'on point' post. I like Obama I'm just not in love. I'm a black woman. What is Obama going to do for black folks. NOTHING! Like most black politicians he needs our vote but isn't promising anything in return. Granted, we haven't even asked. Black folks ask so very little of the people they help get elected. I'm still trying to figure out why black folks were soo in love with the Clintons. Can someone please explain?
    I do think the landslide victory for Barak is going to hurt him with white voters. The race baiting brought out by the Clinton's won't help either. But Obama fanatics just don't understand that the SC victory has energized Hiliary's white female base. Those are the folks that took her to victory in NH. But I'll let them bask in the sun for a second. Super Tuesday will be very sobering for them.
    Hey Field, you know I am not a Obamaholic by my very posts. I too am very cynical about politics. These mofos are running game so deep they should be pimps. That syrupy we all are one bs that asks no tough questions about real and institutional racism and the black misery index in this nation will not let me drink one drop of KOOL AID from Obama or anyone else professing this we are the world bs. Field, staty out in the Field because alot of people are going to be dizzy when ish hits the fan.
    My name's MacDaddy, and i'm an Obamaholic. Just kidding, field. I never loved Kool Aid, not even when my momma tried to make me drink it.
    field, the Clintons had it all worked it out: Blacken the light-skinned boy. Make it racial. But they went too far with it...because, say what you will about Obama, but he comes off as a nice guy; and he really believes his own rhetoric about not seeing color we's all American stuff. So not only black people but white people got sick of hit-man Clinton messin with the brother. And not just regular white folks. I'm taling Emmanuelle, Sen. Leahy. Ted Kennedy-- Democrats who run the show. And then when they tried to contact Bill to tell him to cool, Hillary's staff wouldn't even let em get through, because they really thought the Clinton/Rove plan was working. They just pissed people off. So votes went to Obama.
    Now, not only Caroline but Ted Kennedy is going to put his hat in the ring for Obama, according to the Washington Post. So I agree with you, field, that it's going to be tough for Obama to win, but I tell you what: The Clintons have pissed people off, and it may propel him to get the nomination. Yes, I believe the Clintons are now hated just that much.
    Now Ia gonna come Ghetto Guteral
    I am no hater, but if the O-Man gets elected Micro-Management will be taken to a whole new level in Washington. The separation of Powers will once again be in play. Not one of those young brothers with a bulls%%t drug case is gonna get a presidential pardon, and I'm not gonna get my 40 and my mule. Rush is gonna still be the number on talk radio. I have to admire the brother but if you think Bush's hair turned Grey,just check out the O-man after the first 2 years in office.
    Field,
    I do believe that you too are an Obamaholic. You just refuse to allow us to see you get overly involved but, I think it's too late. You are already overly involved and yes, there's a hint of skepticism and cynicism to the tone of your posts but, I do believe that deep down, you are a believer. While the skepticism and cynicism is there, there's also an underlying feeling of hope in your posts. Maybe you'll become more comfortable with showing all of your Obama love (and I KNOW you have it...I can feel it)after Super Tuesday.
  13. Field you are good! You are shooting from the hip with this. You are already getting ready to say I told you so.
  14. LOL! You're right, he does not have a magic wand with which to right all that is wrong in the world and he isn't perfect. Only a crazy person would expect all of that out of any candidate.
    On the upside though, he brings an entirely different approach and tone to the table and it's much needed.
    Truth? I think the real effects of an Obama presidency would be more significant for our country 20 years down the road than what any of us would realize during it. It isn't so much what would change in the next 4 or 8 years as what would be forever changed about us as a nation.
    I don't expect him to change my world, I expect him to change my grandchildren's.
  15. CHICAGO TRIBUNE ENDORSES BARACK OBAMA
    Barack Obama is the rare individual who can sit in the U.S. Senate yet have his career potential unfulfilled. He is the Democrat best suited to lead this nation. We offer him our endorsement for the Feb. 5 Illinois primary.
    Obama’s key opponent, Sen. Hillary Clinton, unifies only her foes. Her penchant for gaming every issue — recall her clumsy dodging when asked in a Philadelphia debate whether illegal immigrants should be licensed to drive — feeds suspicion of maneuvering that would humble Machiavelli.
    Okay field you win. You're cynical, which makes you tougher and smarter than the rest of us, than anyone who dares risk having faith or belief or hope -- in anything.
    You never risk getting too high or too low and that has served you well in life. Very courageous. And if Obama loses, and he may well, you get to stand on your horse and say "I told you so." Which is so important.
    Sigh.
    This is not about loving Obama. It's not really about him at all. This is about some of us striving for a better world instead of just bitching about this one.
    God bless field. Not interested in reading this stuff anymore.
    I don't think you're a hater. I can be cynical too. I think this country does need an Obama though. As I've said before on this site, if Obama is elected President of THESE United State of America then I'll never talk shit about race in this country again.
    Ahhh Field. . . .
    I am not an Obamaholic--but I give the man money and trust that he has a bit more sense than your common everyday possum. (Which is more than any of us can say the current leadership has.)
    I do not worship him. I remain a healthy cynic about anyone who wants to be president of these United States and I don't believe anyone will be saving all of us black people. We should vote, volunteer and strive to save our own asses.
    Obama is a POLITICIAN. . . .
    Can we all say it together?
    Even if Obama were to get in the WH, not a damn thing is going to change. It's going to be "politricks" as usual. You want a better A-Merry-Ca, we're going to have to start from scratch. A-Merry-Cans need a new Constitutional Convention. Hell, even Thomas Jefferson recommended that we rewrite it every generation or so. Until we do, we will remain a nation of fools and as Malcolm X said, "political chumps" (The Ballot or the Bullet speech - "You put them first, and they put you last, 'cause you’re a chump, a political chump".) Sadly, we A-Merry-Cans don't want to pay those "freedom dues". Then, maybe I should shut up, because I might not know what I'm talking about. :)
    P.S FN, Serena and Jackie are no longer together.
  23. Ha. Field I know you are not a hater.
    I am not an Obamaholic. I don't think he is going to cure everything that is wrong with our country.
    I do think he has inspired many younger voters to get out there and vote. I worked in national politics in my 20s and I have never seen a candidate with this type of energetic support. It might not be enough to get him the nomination but the convention will be very, very interesting if Hillary is the nominee.
  25. Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI), youngest of three children of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, will join his father and his cousin, Caroline Kennedy, in endorsing Barack Obama at American University at lunchtime today, sources said.
    I think it's safe to say, the bridge between the Clintons and the Kennedys have been burned.
    Permanently.
    ReplyDelete
  26. Field,
    I'm cynical as well. I like Obama a lot, but I still have some questions about some of the things he's voted on.
    To Christopher:
    There was never a bridge between the Kennedys and the Clintons. I wouldn't make too much of the Kennedys' support of Obama. They were never close to the Clintons.
    I disagree with the media's calculation that this endorsement was a "blow" to Sen. Clinton.
    Hi Field Negro:
    I can understand your cynicism and there is nothing wrong with questioning the motives of other. However, it becomes more important to understand other people's motivations and make a discernment from that point. And you of all people should understand the importance of weighing all of facts before coming down with an opinion. I do not consider Obama as a shiney and new dime, but he does have a record of passing some important legislation as a state senator and does not support the death penalty. In addition, passing a bill in Illinois making it mandatory to videotape police officer during an interrogation in a capital cases. Can be an effective person as President by influencing people to get things done. Should he become President, one has to remember Obama will handle national affairs and we as the people need to stay on the backs of our Congress people and Senators for the legislative end of government. We will forget (and I am one of those people as well with the exception of sending letters to the President about Darfur) that we contain the power, but for some reason or another let it go only to allow others to control our lives and that has to end. It would easy to blame Bush for all the screw up, but it was the American people who voted him into office for a second term knowing that he was inept and that is putting it mildly. Of course, I could be angry and negative, but what does that get me. Nothing, I can go no where, but I certainly can take that anger and constructively do something about it. However, Field you are doing something, you are bringing your thoughts to a forum for everyone to read and add their comments as well. It does not matter if they agree with you or not, but something positive does happen from it. It causes people to act, so from your cynicism and negativity provokes a person to do something. I do thank you for creating this blog and being honest about your feelings and thoughts, and will keep reading and writing comments.
    Field:
    You miss the point, almost completely.
    Whoever thinks the world is going to change due to a black president in the Oval Office is a moron.
    If it is Hillary or Obama or even McCain a whole lot is not going to change because America’s interests are America's interest and the weight of those interest will weigh down the office of the president.
    I know people who work at the State Department and I've met ambassadors in the DC area. They have told me despite the media spin foreign policy never radically changes from president to president and the first time it has in their memory is with George W Bush. No Dem or Rep is going to make that mistake again for awhile.
    The point of a black president is the symbolism that a black man can be the chief executive of this nation, a nation in which my great great grandfather was born a slave and my father was born into serfdom (Jim Crow). The only people who were treated worse than us historically were Native Americans, so it would be like a Gypsies becoming PM of Spain or Italy…actually even greater than that due to our history.
    I can show my future children a history book and show him the faces of all the stone faced old white man and then I can say…”see X years before you were born a black man became the first president and you might be president too one day”. It might not give hope to a drug dealer but it will give hope to a lot of young black men who are trying to stay on the straight and narrow and see that a man who is black, who didn’t have any special powerful folks looking out for him, who was born to a single mother, who did not grow up rich can become not only a Senator of a majority white state but also president of the United States. That is such a powerful image I can’t describe it. It tells black people that despite discrimination there is nothing they can not achieve in this country as an individual if they fight for it. It fulfills a promise to all American citizens. It will also show generations of future white kids that blacks can do all of this and will continue to do all of this and it will be a norm for them when it was a definitely not for their parents and unthinkable for their grandparents.
    Change starts with a crawl, not with a run.
  30. Great post. I was sitting on the fence for a long time and I believe that I cannot bear the thought of voting for another Clinton to grace the White House and I don't believe that John McCain is the best alternative. I believe that, while he is adamant about not being like Bush, I actually believe that he will perpetuate a lot of his programs. Billary Clinton has managed to make Obama's race the issue and I believe the undertone is that a brother can't serve as President. Who knows what the outcome to this is going to be, but I am happy that Barack Obama has done what Jesse couldn't and that was to ignite the desire in black folks to go out and vote. With that, may the best person win, because the road to the nomination is not smooth but winding.
    Field:
    I heard about half of the Kennedy endorsement.
    I got some of your cynicism. He said Obama will “make America good again”.
    The first thing I thought was…”again” what like Jim Crow?? I know I’m wrong for that. Haha
    The Kennedy endorsement has meaning because the Kennedy’s still have a lot of pull with the party establishment, blue collar whites, and older voters who remember “Camelot (which trumps the Clinton years by far)”. He will also get more ability to fund raise with rich white establishment New England liberals. The Kennedy’s will call in favors with unions. It is the single biggest endorsement of this campaign (then I guess Oprah was second). The beauty of it is the Clintons can’t say anything directly to Ted, what is Billary going to say, “I knew your brother/father better than you…”? I would love them to try that. That will be the end of Billary. If Obama can pull about 10% of her support away I think he can get the nomination…the Kennedy’s can’t do it for him all by themselves but they can start the momentum.
  37. Toni Morrison Endorses Barack Obama
    The woman who famously labeled Bill Clinton as the "first black president" is backing Barack Obama to be the second.
    Author Toni Morrison said her endorsement of the Democratic presidential candidate has little to do with Obama's race — he is the son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas — but rather his personal gifts.
    Morrison, whose acclaimed novels usually concentrate on the lives of black women, said she has admired Clinton for years because of her knowledge and mastery of politics, but then dismissed that experience in favor of Obama's vision.
    "In addition to keen intelligence, integrity and a rare authenticity, you exhibit something that has nothing to do with age, experience, race or gender and something I don't see in other candidates," Morrison wrote. "That something is a creative imagination which coupled with brilliance equals wisdom. It is too bad if we associate it only with gray hair and old age. Or if we call searing vision naivete. Or if we believe cunning is insight. Or if we settle for finessing cures tailored for each ravaged tree in the forest while ignoring the poisonous landscape that feeds and surrounds it.
    These endorsements are like that old chinese torture technique, "death by a thousand cuts". Every endorsment Obama gains is like a tiny cut to the Clinton campaign. It wont be long before the Clintons realize that their bleeding to death...and theres nobody available to give them life support. It's pretty obvious to everyone at this point that the mothership is taking on water and while Bill is out bashing Obama and playing the race card, the democratic establishment is jumping ship.
    Dragon Horse I have to take on what you said my brother. Having a black person in charge of the US government which ill treats it own allowing folks to be exploited for the sake of profit and power and spreads murder and chaos around the world while cynically invading other countries in the name of democracy is not something I can be proud of.
    This government has a long history of picking on countries filled with colored folks I wont be proud that we have a black man in office when he decides to invade Pakistan for some conjured up reason.
    If a black man reigned over Nazi Germany would look back and say well at least a black man was the president.
    This goes against the grain of King Malcolm, Toure and other great freedom fighters but obviously many of us miss the point. We wanted a bigger piece of the pie, but not if the daggone thing was rotten. If its rotten we should throw it out and make a new one.
    I feel you as always. I am not really a big supportor of Obama, but I am leaning towards him now. My man Edwards does not have a shot in hell of winning, and that is who I was going to support. Hill-Billy can kiss my black ass. The way they are constantly reminding AmeriKKKa covertly of how "black" Obama is has turned my stomach. I have said for years that Bill Clinton was a hypocrite, and now everyone can see it. I guess they have kind of forced me to support Obama. Because the way I see it, Obama is still a black man, which means if I see him walking down the street here in Dallas, he will get the head nod and "Wus up Bra", that I reserve for all my black brothers. So in saying that, I consider Obama to be a member of the Black American family, which means he is like a VERY distant cousin. Which also means I can talk shit about my "family", but you better not. I can fight with my "family" but if someone on the outside tries to get bad, Then that someone on the outside has got to get beat down. Hill-Billy is on the outside.
    First Black President my Ass!!
    Has anyone forgotten that the presidential election can be stolen? Remember Bush/Gore fiasco in Florida and the court decided with Bush?
    If Obama wins, they will take him into a room and explain the rules and remind him that if he uck's up, they will take him on a ride in Dallas.
    Wake up folks, the game is chess not checkers.
  45. I don't think Brother Malcolm would expect any of us to stop fighting the good fight no matter who is in the white house.
    But, imagery and pride means a great deal to black people. Don't for a minute believe that the every day image of seeing a black man going through the good and the bad in trying to lead this country will not leave a profound effect on the hearts, minds and spirits of black men, black woman and black children through out this entire world.
    In the meantime I will continue to fight the good fight for the masses of poor and disenfranchised black people of my community.
    There is no conflict the way I see, "white world supremacy" will still be here neva you worry and my support for Obama does not lull me into continuing the fight against it.
    Another note about House Negro Kwame Kilpatrick: I don't know if you knew this or not, but Uncle Kilpatrick here sent and received those text messages on a city-owned phone. Why does this mater?
    The fool knew his texts and calls were being constantly archived!!
    @aaron @ alaine-
    Interesting site; although I disagree with the framing of several of the questions, disagree with what the more important issues are, and I question their methodology, it gets the same result as the one I'm leaning towards:
    Obama.
    Obama, meh - right now its Edwards that holds the keys in New Orleans, cause he's the only one that seems to remember that we still exist
    Rebellin:
    If you feel like that I was not talking to you and I think your opinion is in the minority even among black so I will chalk that up to what it is worth. I don't have time to play "educated the black nationalist fanatic".
    The revolution will only be televised on a tv with no power cord when you are off your meds.
    Funny and sharp as a switchblade as usual FN. But for crying out loud. All I'm gonna do is vote for the man. And here is why... I just want someone to be President who won't stand in the way of progress. I'm not expecting him to save the world. I'm just hoping he won't try to keep the rest of us from doing what we can to save it. And maybe, just maybe, he can clear some legislative obstacles out of the way. If that is all he does, it will be enough for me.
  52. Ahh, come on now. I support Obama, but increasingly more 'cause of Michelle. Sista is bad.
    Beyond that we got a win-win situation going on here. First off black folks got something to rally behind. That's a good thing politically and psychologically. If Obama doesn't win, it's a reality check for black folks. If he does win and does the same lame shyt as all his predecessors, its a reality check for black folks. If he does win and actually can really change things it might be the beginning of end of white supremacy. That would be a good thing, too. Though I ain't holding my breath.
  53. Hi, my name is Kim and I am an Obamaholic. I even given my 20-month old daughter obama kool-aid when I let her push the button for him in Saturday's primary (I live in Charleston, SC). She doesn't quite understand why she's high yet but one day I'll explain it to her. Please don't report me to DSS. LOL!
    Anyway, I'm with alot of the posters here about what an Obama presidency will mean for this country and the world. I also have a 7-year-old nephew, who has been told already that he can be anything he wants to be. But we (his parents and I) haven't told him that its not entirely true. However, on Wednesday, Nov. 5 I hope to be able to tell him that he can TRULY be anything he wants including President of the United States and his race won't be factor (at least not totally). And when my beautiful baby girl comes of age, I will be able to tell her with pride about the first black president, the same way my parents told me about Dr. King. Call me a dreamer, ms. black pollyanna sunshine, I don't care. I actaully get emotional when I think about it.
    Obama has a gift for rhetoric and an ability to inspire people. He seems to be using his powers for Good, with a message of hope and unity. He has managed to break through my cynical exterior and reach the dormant idealist inside.
    So maybe I'm being naive, maybe it will all come back to bite me in the ass later, but damn it feels good to have hope again. I'll take it.
    Peace
    Yliza
    I'm not an Obama-aholic but I've realized by reading these comments, I will probably be one by the time the general election comes around. We don't vote Super Tuesday - it's Mardi Gras day - but the Saturday afterwards. I was for Kucinich and of those left I like Edwards best. If he's still standing after Super Tuesday should I vote for him, or be 'strategic' and go for Obama just to stop the Clintons, who I like the least?
    Obama is not a perfect candidate in my eyes either. But he's better than Grandpa McCain, who won in Florida today.
    Speaking of McCain, did you know he's more in bed with the lobbyists than Obama, Clinton, and Giuliani?
    http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/01/29/many_lobbyists_among_mccain_fu.html
    We're more likely to see results with Obama than with "Hundred Years War" McCain.
  57. My name is Vic, and I'm an Obamaholic. And it feels good. yeah he may not be able to fix everything in Washington. But he has a voice, a presence that will bring about some change and get us headed in the right direction. We must, and I mean must, have a 16-plus-year run with democrats in control so we can reap the positive effects. So if it's Obama for eight years, great. Hopefully someone else will be in the pipeline waiting.
    just a little fyi for those who might not know. obama's people where not field negros or house negros. his white mom's people owned slaves. truth is..he's as much white as he is black. if any white people cared to take credit for the accomplishments of people who share their genes, they could take just as much pride in obama as any black person (if not more). why if not more, well... his black dad is off the boat from africa. that means he is very far removed from anyone who is realated to the onetime slaves in america. it's cool to be happy with change in america that leads to a country that would elect a man of color, but you guys are nuts. you're as racist as the worst kkk members. you think you have a right to be because some white people were really bad a long time ago. that only leads to more bad things...and it certainly isn't rightous. i'm white, and i'm going to vote for obama because i trust him and i think he's the best man for the job. his color or the color of any i ever voted for has never had anything to do with it. i hope obama has enought influence over people on this board to make you come to you senses. even though i support obabma, i think you should reconsider voting for him if you primary reason is that his has more pigment in his skin than hillary of mccain.
