Whoops!

"For the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country...."

OK Michelle, that little statement just might have cost your husband the Presidency of these divided states, and probably robbed this field Negro the chance of seeing a black prez. in his life time.

White folks on the right (and some on the left) will be all over you for this one. It's started already. The blogs, as they say, are buzzing. (Merry Christmas Hillary) And it's not only A-merry-ca loving white folks, and political opportunist. The A-merry-ca first black folks, many of them visit this site, are up in arm s too.

"What? How dare you Michelle? Didn't this country give your black ass a Princeton and Harvard degree? (As if she didn't earn that shit) Isn't your family worth over a million dollars? What do you mean you you are proud of A-merry-ca for the first time Negra? Hey, if you don't like A-merry-ca why don't you go back to Africa and join your father in law and his family?"

But wait; let's look at the rest of that statement:

"...And not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction...”

Mmmm, OK, now it makes sense when taken in it's proper context. She was talking about "change"; not the same old shit she has been seeing all of her adult life which probably started with those glorious Reagan years. But too late. I am sure the "O" man haters only needed the first part of Michelle's statement to do like Carl Lewis with that bad boy.

I mean even Cindy McCain weighed it on this one. (I didn't even know she could talk) I don't want to buy into stereotypes but...... anyway, Cindy had this to say:

"I just wanted to make the statement that I have and always will be proud of my country"

And just what the fuck does that mean? Shit I would be proud of my country too if I were you Cindy. I am sure it's always been good for you in A-merry-ca. Give me a break!

Still, I don't know "O" man, it might be time to tell Michelle to chill a little. She can say anything she wants to after you win this bitch. But for now, it's too hot out here. Tell her to pull back just a little bit. I know it will be hard. Believe me, I understand the strong spouse thing, but the stakes are too high now. Hell you even have me believing you might win this election if everything plays out just right, so don't give your enemies stuff to use against you. Hillary pulled in Bill, maybe you can do the same with your significant other.

Now let's see what happens in Wisconsin tonight.

Another "P" word dragged out to do damage to Obama's bid for the White House. Michelle Obama states that she's only lately become "proud" of her country.

Given what Bush has done in recent years to the reputation of this country, and Bill Clinton's sullying of the Oval Office by using it as his personal whore-house bedroom, what's there to be proud of.

Of all the things to attack him on, this one has to be the height of hypocrisy.

Bill O' is going to give her a "pass" on this. How magnanimous!

  4. Oh lord. It was only a matter of time...no dirt on Barack? Go after the wife!

Hell, I'm with Michelle. What is there to be proud of? The fact that we are engaged in a endless "war", that the US dollar is worth shit in the global economy, or the fact that everynight on my news channels I have to hear something about Britney Spears before I hear some about real news?

A-merry-ca is never going to totally accept Michelle Obama...she's an opinionated black woman so that automatically puts her in the "loud and angry" kneegrow category. I say continue to do you Michelle and don't fret about what the others have to say.

By the way, Cindy McCain knows how to speak? Who knew.

  8. I think Michelle handles herself nicely in interviews--direct, no-nonsense, whipsmart. Maybe someone will do a follow-up with her and let her elaborate. Cd lead to an interesting dialogue about the direction the country's been going in.
Of course, if that happens, I'll check my mega-millions ticket for the winning numbers.

This pride in one's country thing seems to be uniquely American. And it seems quite irrationally jingoistic at times.

Here in New Zealand you practically never hear the term, so I'm amazed Obama's words have caused a fuss.

In my 30s it was Reagan, Iran/contra, Central America's US supported massacres in El Salvador, Guatamala and Nicaragua, support of South Africa's apartheid, Nuclear proliferation. homophobia writ large with the AIDS crisis.
In my 40s it was welfare reform, NAFTA, Hyper-capitalism, corporate globalization, IMF/World Bank, Global Aids crisis, and then,

That clip might get played, but what was worse than this was the senator from TX that got put on MSNBC to rep Obama right after Obama's victory speech. Jody,

Amen to all of that. I was puzzling over the same time line and came up the same. I came of voting during the Carter years and can remember my father shouting at the television during Watergate about how Nixon's best friend was a gangster named Bebe Rebozo.

The saddest thing for me to remember during this primary is that Bill Clinton was actually the best thing we'ld seen at the time. He was fresh enough that we winked along at his "not inhaling" and his "womanising" and by the time he threw everyone from Jesse to Lani under the bus .... well, none of us were shocked because it *was* politics, after all.

That's what I think so many people of my generation are really responding to. To finally have a candidate that isn't "not as bad" as the rest. I do keep telling myself that noone can be this good, this real but hey, I'm hoping (oh! that word again) that we all have four years to find out.

I see the whole thing as a somewhat poorly worded sentiment that really is quite meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Of course the media is gonna jump on it. Yawn.

What I find more interesting is the reaction from the commenters here.

We have personal attacks on McCain's wife.

We have a list of the U.S.'s wrongs, and casual dismisals of the opportunities and advantages bestowed on us all (even the Obamas - gasp!) just by virtue of being American. And I'm talking about very real, *very* substantial basic freedoms we have and have helped to promote both here and around the world. We've made major, major mistakes. We've done much harm, to many people. We will continue to do so regardless of who is elected. Maybe we shouldn't be proud of who we've been... But let's not be naive - our national character isn't on the cusp of a miraculous change to saintlikeness.

I find it more than a little hypocritical to see so many bash the Clintons now, when many of those bashing would have claimed Clinton was one of the best presidents ever only a year or so ago. You can't cry foul now regarding his behaviour, unless you did way back when. Of course, I don't know if anyone in particular is being hypocritical, but if the shoe fits...

Nsangoma continues to make no sense. Well, I think I disagree with him but I don't know where he is from, and without knowing his anscestory I cannot know if I agree/support him. Lol.

The media jumping on this comment has nothing to do with Michelle's race. Let's be real - if another prominent figure in another campaign said the same thing, she would be criticized too.

True, America is never going to totally accept Michelle Obama - When has it ever totally accepted any political/semi-political figure? You could just as easily say America will never fully accept John McCain. George Bush. Hillary Clinton. Bill Clinton. Jesus. And on and on.

I don't know what exactly this Vandy professor was saying, but from the sounds of it she's guilty (only) of supporting Hillary?!?!!? Not surprisingly, according to several people here that is enough to make her a house negro. And thank God that "an Hispanic guy" was there to keep her in line!!

I would like to see Obama win. I think he's probably the best candidate for the job, and I think it would do this country a world of good in many ways. But come on yall... Let's try to be a little more grounded.

  37. Thank you, rikyrah, for putting the quote in its entirety up for all to see.

In my opinion, there's no there, there, vis a vis Michelle's remarks.

I happen to agree with her and after 8 years of that braindead Pickles Bush warbling meaningless bon mots about what a great job she thinks her husband is doing, I find Michelle Obama a breath of much needed fresh air.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Anonymous9:00 AM

What's interesting of course is she's pretty much right on the money. And I don't think she will cost Obama too many liberal votes.

But the authoritarian right wing voices (Limbaugh, et. al.), and the people driving around in SUVs with the stars and stripes stickers and those adorable support the troops ribbons will be greatly offended.

To these everything has to be black or white, no nuance please people, you do not bad mouth our country and you do not burn the flag and if George W. Bush wants to bomb the crap out of some little middle eastern country so he and Cheney's mega-wealthy friends can get even more mega wealthy, well, that's what America is all about. That makes them proud to be an American. To these ignorant and arrogant sons of bitches, America the greatest country on the face of the earth and the rest of the world can kiss our white supremacist ass (their thoughts, not mine).

    I agree with Michelle.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Sorry, Field, you called this one wrong. Most of the blogs I've seen is going 70% in Michelle's favor with her comments.

As New Black Woman said, there hasn't been a whole lot to be proud of in America, especially the last eight years, thanks to the Frat Boy jacking up America's standing on a global scale.

Chuck D warned us at the CBC Legislative Weekend in 2004 if Bush got re-elected, that every African-American should get themselves a passport and a plan to get out of this SOB.

Michelle nailed the sentiments of most rationally thinking Americans not drunk on the Frat Boy's joy juice.

At last polling, that would be about 72% of the country; 28% still think the Frat Boy can do no wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I was mulling this one over with the wife. As a white person (ok, without a vote in the US but perhaps somewhat representative of an "average" white voter anyhow) my first thought was: "oh, no ... Michelle's served up an easy one for the Republicans to score points off of"... The important point here is not the fact that a very large majority of black Americans will obviously agree with her comments, nor even that many white Americans (who will be liberal and in the Democratic fold anyhow) might also agree. What is important is that her comments will play to that old, often sub-conscious, prejudice against blacks in America, that they are somehow "ungrateful" for what has been "provided" for them (Civil Rights, Affirmative Action, popular tv and sports stars, etc.). This kind of a statement might ease some centrist voters away from a black candidate and that can make a difference come the eventual Obama-McCain matchup.

Of course, my wife (black, and with a vote) had a completely different reaction. Basically that this is precisely why it will be so difficult for any black candidate to win ... because of the notion (among at least some white voters) that this kind of "ungratefulness" is unacceptable, that basically black folks need to smile, "get over it" and, please, never, suggest that they've had a less than exciting experience of life in America.

In the end, you may say that it is precisely the white reaction that matters, given that the black electorate is so small in comparison. And if that is the case, and if this particular smear sticks, then it could be a problem.

Hopefully people will see it for what it is: largely irrelevant, and in any case simply a case of a person speaking what they think and saying something that is quite right to begin with.

" His theme is that you can't trust these people. They don't even like this country.."

Gotta love that FOX news- they surely know how to rally the base (racist white males who think America does no wrong to minorities- the ones your Governor said wouldn't vote for a black [or a woman]).

  43. Michelle said what most blacks and progressive-thinking people thought. Remember: She said it was the first time in her adult life that she felt "real" proud to be an American. Some news people tried to edit out the real.

But this is yet another non-issue by corporate news channels with lazy reporters and rating-hungry news producers who would rather promote conflicts between candidates or between candidate's wives than seriously discuss policy.

Instead of bashing Michelle, pundits should be talking about how Obama, despite the much ballyhooed political acumen of both Clintons, is running a smarter campaign. He has had energetic staff on the ground in plenty of time to knock on doors and make calls like crazy. He has watched his money, doing ads selectively, making sure they appearat just at the right time. And, he has not wasted time complaining about MSNBC reporters or Chris Mathews. Instead, he has used his time wisely, traveling all over the state in play for votes. For example, the governmor of Wisconsin said in the Milwaukee Jounal Sentinel today that one reason Obama won yesterday is because, unlike Sen. Clinton, Obama spent a lot of time in the state talking to people all over the state.

Instead of putting down Obama's wife, pundits should be giving the brother some props for running a great campaign...Oh, I forgot. we're not supposed to be smart people. My bad.

    ReplyDelete
  44. The comment won't make a difference. O man is gonna win in my home state Texas. The Toyota Center in Houston was packed last night--there were more people in the seats for O's speech than there have been at the last 10 Rockets home games.

I was home this past weekend and the Obamaholics were everywhere. One more thing that warrants some attention...look at these numbers:

    Dems in WI:
    O 645,945
    H 452,716

    Rep in WI:
    M 224, 183
    H 151, 160

O's numbers are just crazy, but consider that both O and Hill individually had more votes than all the Reps put together. Where are all the Reps and why are they not voting?

    1. a woman

How dare these white, eastcoast media elites diss Michelle Obama for expressing her experience as a black woman in America?

The fact is, even after she becomes the First Lady (and I am certain she will), when she goes to Saks or Nordstrom to buy herself a dress or a pair of shoes, the sales people will tag along from a distance, keeping an eye on her in case she shop lifts.

His own advisor (Peter Edelman) said it was too severe. Clinton didn't care, it was time to triangulate. He was never a "black president" in my eyes. My co-workers and I were talking about this today. I hope it didn't adversely affect his campaign to bad. It's unfortunate, because I really love Michelle.

  55. About as low as it gets, or just a taster of what's to come? http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/2/20/152334/785

    Fox's O'Reilly on Mrs Obama:

"And I don't want to go on a lynching party against Michelle Obama unless there's evidence, hard facts, that say this is how the woman really feels. If that's how she really feels -- that America is a bad country or a flawed nation, whatever -- then that's legit."

  56. A whole lot of Nothing about Nothing. Again its about starting something for the public to water cooler about the next day. I agree with much of what you posted except the BE QUIET MICHELLE part. Mrs. MI'BAMA (my take on the Billary lable) is more than capable to speaking publicly ... even though she has said some WILD SHYT and nasy stuff about the Clinton's (which no one seemed to have made a point of) she can and has be an asset all the way for the campaign. Remember, she can say things in support of her husband that Bill Clinton can't being Hillary's husband.

If you begin to limit MI'BAMA's role in the campaign, it will be more damaging to Barak Obama than if she speak honestly and people take her comments out of contexts.

  57. I just want to see people make a list of the things they're proud of this country for doing in the last 30 years up against a list of the things they're disgusted about.

  59. Well good for you Michelle. You're finally proud of your country. Congratulations.
Sorry, but I haven't gotten there yet. I remember being proud back when the USA was putting men on the moon, mking civil rights a priority, going through social upheaval, and leading the world in environmental remediation. That was before I became an adult. Since then, can't think of much to be proud of.
Oh, and let some of you media hacks walk a mile in her shoes and see how "proud" your lilly white asses are.
I wrote about it in my blog today, come see me over at SagaciousHillbilly

  62. "This pride in one's country thing seems to be uniquely American. And it seems quite irrationally jingoistic at times."

The US population goes on being proud of itself even as its currency becomes worthless, its borrowing threatens to start an international depression . . . The US is like number thirty in infant mortality, so what have we got to be proud about?

Should we be proud of our wonderful democracy, in which the Constitution that we all obey was written exclusively by white men for the rest of us to follow obediently?

Shall we be proud of our 2nd Amendment, that guarantees every American's right to be armed enough to kill every living person in his neighborhood, on his job, or at his school?

We have a lot to be proud of because what shames others makes us proud of ourselves.

Now, Mrs. Obama, please tell us all that you ARE proud of, so that your husband can be sworn in as the first Black president of the United States.

    Francis Holland:

Do you have an alternative to the Constitution, or can you give us an example of some other document which has led to a country as free and humane as ours? Especially when considered as it is now, amended, as per provisions written into it by those white dudes... If anything, our form of government and its built-in ability to adapt and improve is one of the few things I am unreservedly proud of. We've needed many adjustments along the way, and we need many more, but so far no bloody revolutions, no military state, none of the crap so many others have had to deal with. I'm proud of that much at least.

Re infant mortality: A big reason our numbers are so low in that catagory are because we attempt to keep alive many infants that other countries (with lesser medical technology) would throw in the dumpster. But it's a given our healthcare system needs improvement.

I'm not much of a rah-rah, GO AMERICA cheerleader. Especially not after the past few years, and after reading a bit of history you don't get in school (i.e. Howard Zinn, Chomsky, etc.) But like Chomsky says, I still believe the U.S. is a great country. Millions around the world, sans rose-colored glasses, still look up to us, and with good reason.

who the fuck is this bitch cindy mccain to talk? its not like any one gives a shit what she thinks. Personally, I respect Michelle Obama and that she is a asset, and should speak more. I like it when she trash talks the clintons.

  66. Unfortunately, loose lips sink ships. Regardless of the intent of Mrs. Obama's statement, slips of the tongue can be the end of a campaign EASILY. I completely agree with F.N. on this one. Barack should be concerned and Michelle needs to be coached on her speaking. It would be sad if her words damaged his campaign. During the general, this type of thing would be way bigger news. I haven't been proud of my country for a long time either, but I'm not running for office. Get this stuff under control before then, Obama campaign. Pleeeeeze?

  67. LOL @ "I mean even Cindy McCain weighed it on this one. (I didn't even know she could talk)". I didn't know she could either - hilarious.

But I agree with you. Perhaps Michelle's words need to be chosen more carefully until after Barack gets elected. The reason is that White America has this irrational love for country and this pompous attitude about the greatness and perfection of America. They will and have spun any negative statements about America by anyone Obama-affiliated against Obama.
