“'The contrast between the large, adoring crowds Obama draws at public events and the gritty street-level work to win votes is stark. The candidate is largely insulated from the mean-spiritedness that some of his foot soldiers deal with away from the media spotlight.' "
That quote is from a Washington Post article about the racism and downright vitriol some of the "O" man's volunteers have been subject to thanks to some of our fellow citizens here in A-merry-ca.
I haven't commented on this in awhile, but today is a perfect time in lieu of the severe ass whipping that the Ice Queen is putting on the "O" man tonight. This ass whipping comes compliments of my banjo playing friends in West Virginia.
Now if these folks were voting on the basis of policy and just pure politics it would be one thing. But quite a few of them have been willing to admit that they will not vote for the "O" man because... he is.....well...you know, tall. :)
But seriously, the level of ignorance in this country is astonishing. What's scary is that the folks in West Virginia are proud to let the country know that they will be laying the marker in the sand. And damn it if more folks were like them this little uppity nigger from Illinois wouldn't actually think that he could be the president of these divided states. I actually think that quite a few of them are angry that he was allowed to even go this far. Poor "O" man, he is trying to build a movement based on unity, and when he actually does win the dumbocratic nomination to be president, the country, because of him, will be more divided than ever. Black folks will continue to get his back. (90%) But some white folks, mostly the poor and uneducated ones will continue to reject him by almost the same margin.
I visited West Virginia once. I was up in Morgantown, and the town wasn't all that bad. Of course it was a university town, and I was among West Virginia's educated class. But from what I can remember the people were friendly and decent, and I wasn't called a nigger not once. Well, not to my face. But there was poverty there, and I remember that the state had a lot of natural beauty but noticeable poverty as well.
Which is the irony of all this. Why would a state that has been one of the countries' poorest all these years, so overwhelmingly support a politician who would give them more of the same, and not one offering change? Why wouldn't they at least give the black man a chance? And hell, he isn't even all the way black. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, after all, they keep sending a former Klansman to Washington.
So tonight, the Ice Queen will be giving another victory speech thanks to her moonshine drinking friends. And she will demand that the super delegates pay attention. She will demand that the ones abandoning her, like a Rastafarian on a pig farm, reconsider their votes. But if they are like me they won't. They will see West Virginia for what it is, a state with a large Bubba population, who would rather switch than fight for the black man.
The problem for the "O" man and the Obamaholics, is how many more West Virginia' do we have out here? How many of these types of folks do we really have in A-merry-ca? You know the ones. The ones that if Obama came to their homes and gave every family a check for $10,000 they still wouldn't vote for his black ass. Yeah thanks for the check "Osama", you got our vote brother........ yeah right nigger, not in this life, and the other one ain't looking too good either.
"The contrast between the large, adoring crowds Obama draws at public events and the gritty street-level work to win votes is stark. The candidate is largely insulated from the mean-spiritedness that some of his foot soldiers deal with away from the media spotlight."
Yeah but not for long "O" man, not for long.
Maybe they're 3% AA for a reason, never been there, wouldn't know.
ReplyDeleteDo you remember this exchange: On affirmative action, Obama, a Harvard Law School graduate, said he thinks that someday when his two young daughters apply to college, they “should probably be treated by any admissions officer as folks who are pretty advantaged” and there is nothing wrong with that. “I think that we should take into account white kids who have been disadvantaged and been brought up in poverty and shown themselves to have what it takes to succeed,” he added. “There are a lot of African-American kids who are still struggling.”
Obama said that “if we have done what needs to be done to ensure that kids who are qualified to go to college can afford it, that affirmative action becomes a diminishing tool for us to achieve racial equality in this society.”
He needs this message for the General Election. He can always break it later. I'm not holding my breath for a middle class tax cut if you know what I mean.
Easier for them to be put down by a white yale law grad woman, than a black harvard law grad man, I guess. Seriously, neither of them, nor the dumbocratic party really want to hang out with poor ignorant voters ... of either race.
ReplyDeleteActually, I think it's more accurate to ask "how many more west virginians are out there that can be bothered to register and vote against Obama?"
ReplyDeletehttp://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/05/13/1017500.aspx
She won the total white vote 68% to 28%. Why can't she close the deal with the other 28%???
She won white women 74% to 24%. That's almost a quarter that didn't vote for her.
Yet, when asked how they would feel if Obama is the nominee this year, 44% say they would be satisfied with him.
I honestly feel a little badly for the folks of Appalachia. I mean, since when has anyone given two farts about them in how long? And more sadly for them, considering how many of them are struggling too, how soon will they be forgotten about again?
Yeah, field, it almost brings tears; but I remember how our people and A-Merry-kkka did MLK. The real elephant in the dining room is that the people in West Virginny represent most A-Merry-kkkans. I challenge you or anyone to honestly find three out of five who can spell their name and walk at the same time. They are 'nice' people; they will smile and even speak to ya'; but, if you ask any of them to THINK!!!! beyond maybe five words, well, you're gonna be kind of disappointed.
ReplyDeleteI almost want "O" man to drop out and go on back to the Illinois community where folks can handle this level of intellect. Anyway, I do believe that we delude ourselves if we really think most A-Merry-kkkans: 1. Want to end the madness in Iraqqqqq. 2. Have had enough of the crisis in our economy. 3. Evolved beyond race/identity politics.
Bye ya,

"I honestly feel a little badly for the folks of Appalachia. I mean, since when has anyone given two farts about them in how long? And more sadly for them, considering how many of them are struggling too, how soon will they be forgotten about again?"
ReplyDeleteActually lol I agree witht hat statement. But why do they always vote against their own interests?
"I guess. Seriously, neither of them, nor the dumbocratic party really want to hang out with poor ignorant voters ... of either race."
Of course not anon.11:04PM,none of those folks went to Ivy League schools.
Field, that's the million dollar question, isn't it? I guess that's part of the gamble of democracy, watching how often the "average" voter can be distracted and fooled into voting against what is best for them. I have a theory that those are a lot of the same people that still wail and mourn Princess Diana ... the Royal Retarded Slut. *shrug*
ReplyDeleteNow, take IN, Clinton's last "big state win". Just over a million people turned out and voted. That's a lot but about another 500K voted in NC, right? So, which is the bigger state? Which has the more eligible voters? That's what I'm sure that Obama's folks are focusing on, driving up the total number of actual voters.
I'm curious about just how many of those WV people actually voted because % is one thing, actual numbers is another.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/13/AR2008051302862.html?hpid=topnews
After reading that, I would bet a fifty on the actual eligible turnout being a bit lower than the Clintons are going to want known.
I was sad not to hear a single pundit tonight talk about the fact that Obama's proposed policies are more in the interests of poor, uneducated people than any of HRC's policies, proposed or proven. These folks are much more likely to join the military or need to claim bankruptcy or to be in any number of situations that her legislation has made much worse.
ReplyDeleteTheir votes, then, boil down to a too-familiar "hierarchy"--if she were running against a white man, they'd vote for him over her, regardless of policies. It's awful.
Thank the Lawd that Klan meeting is over.
ReplyDeletea.f. Hillary's health care plan is more comprehensive than Obama's. Other than that I don't see much difference in their policies. I'm not suggesting that mattered in WV. What policies are you thinking of? He's going to need to be perfect on domestic issues to offset his foreign policies problems.
ReplyDeletehillary, who's been placing the race card all along, seems to have forgotten (along with Bubba,) that it was all kinds of black folk that put his ass in the white house TWO times, and if hillary thinks for a moment that there is some magical way that obama will be denied the nomination and she is somehow "awarded" super-delegates, and that all of the previously established rules of the Party are broken and/or brokered to her benefit--if she thinks for one second that black folk will go to the polls and vote for her, then she's more disillusioned that what she appears to be on tv. we all know that--and terry mcAuliff?, her chief strategist, should tell her she needs to back off, cause black folk will stay home, thus ensuring mcCain's walk into the big house.
ReplyDelete@ms. martin,
ReplyDeletetruth, but you know, now she's going to be drumming on all their sistercousins over in Kentucky now.
Olbermann called her fundraising a Ponzi scheme tonight and I guess if her supporters want to send her more money rather than uh, buy gas or start a college fund .... free country and all that.
I know it makes me a terrible person but every time I see her on tv now I just yell out "did you know Obama's BLACK???"
The pundits are knocking themselves out talking about Obama and the white vote but do you notice they will not talk at length about Hillary and the black vote?
ReplyDeleteI'm just waiting for this bullshit to be over.
Fuck the media!
Hillary did not forget nothing, black folks abandoned her. I never see this race card she plays. I think it is a figment of your imagination. When white folks vote for the best candidate it is racism. When black folks vote for the least qualifed candidate it is okay because he is black and they are black. When white people are called dumb hicks, it's okay. When white folks are called inbred, it's okay. It's okay. Let's talk about how black folks are being played by a black man when he wants to be black. He had to go to church as an adult to become black. Obama don't give a god damn about no black folks. What has Obama done for black folks? How's Chicago? What exactly has Obama done for black folks? What has Obama promise to do for black folks. When black folks are crying over Obama I guess it will be his white half that is at fault. Quanah Parker was injun to injuns when white folks was killed, but was white to injuns when injuns was killed.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for Obama to be president, All the crime, crack, hood rats, slumlords, overprice grocery stories in the hood, liquor stores on the corner, gansters will disappear. A bitch will go to work and give me her cheddar too. I. CANT. WAIT. Maybe pops will get out of jail too.
It's an ugly thing. Very ugly. I of 4 voters in exit polls said that therace of the candidate matters. . . 1 of 4 admitted it. That's the largest percentage to admit it of any state primary.
ReplyDeleteWell, even the most racist state in the nation has to have a beacon of modern progressive post colonial thought here and there. . . it gets lonely.
Sagacious(fromWV)Hillbilly
"I challenge you or anyone to honestly find three out of five who can spell their name and walk at the same time. "
ReplyDeleteWell, aint that a nice thing to say. Kinda makin a fairly broad generalization there, aint ya bubba?
"Why do they vote against their self interests?"
That's easy. Why does anyone in this country vote against their self interests? The same reason MoronMonkeyBoy Bush the Chimp spent 8 years sitting in the White House eating pretzels.
They watch Fox News, they listen to the corporae media, they allow themselves to be persuaded by non-iisues like abortion, gun rights, family values, etc.
You see, their problems aren't about job loss or the removal of their natural resources by out of state corporations, it's about illegal immigrants taking their jobs or gay folks getting married.
Why is this being discussed like it's a real issue? Clinton had been expected to win this state for some time. So she won. Big deal. She's still $20M + in the hole and she's not getting the nomination. Also the Rethugs are losing down ticket races where they use Obama as wedge. Some people will not be manipulated but some just don't get it. Too bad and let them deal with it. It's time to move on. You can't save everyone. I want to talk about McCain's free ride, his wife's hidden tax returns and Bush's plan for an Iran invasion.

Nah, not really a good indicator. My current state of residence has a similarly low level of blackness and we went with Obama over Clinton. Some places, racial concerns trump political interests; others they don't.
It would be helpful in forming an opinion if it was quantified how many whites won't for Obama because of race. And further break that down by class, age and region and any other relevant facts.
ReplyDeleteOn Ta-Nehisi Coates blog, he asks why is Obama doing well is some predominately white regions and not so well in others. He gets some answer here:
http://www.ta-nehisi.com/2008/05/you-guys-should.html
Also I would note that the white college students who are encountering overt racism from there door to door canvassing, where shocked because they never heard it before. To me to some degree the cup is half full. They had made it for 20 years without hearing overt racist language.
I wasn't shocked when I read that WaPo report at the office. During the GE, I'm going to volunteer for those phone banks --and I'll gladly blog about what I hear, good or bad.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Cali will go for Obama in November --and our 55 delegates.
szechuanpork, maybe "policies" was a bad word choice, but she supported the war, of course, and has a much more hawkish stance than Obama, she worked extensively on the 2001 bankruptcy bill (the one that made it much harder for families at or above the median income for their state to claim bankruptcy), then she voted for it in 2001, only to miss the vote for the final version, which passed, in 2005. Obama voted against that bill. I'm not sure that her health care plan is more comprehensive. It mandates that everyone buy coverage, but it does so without guaranteeing that the coverage is affordable. That's why, in my understanding, Obama does not support a mandate on coverage, except for children. She has consistently supported exploitative trade agreements that outsource jobs. While her husband's policies are not hers, she did promote them--namely "three-strikes" mandatory sentencing and welfare "reform," both of which are especially problematic for the poor/uneducated.
ReplyDeleteNot to worry... hardworking americans will vote for Obama by a large margin in Oregon. While watching CNN, I think there is sort of an unspoken acknowledgement that Appachalia won't vote for a mixed black man but they cover it up by saying Obama can't win "working class whites" a.k.a the undereducated and ignorant. The same group that brought Bush to power TWICE. The same group who think they will make a real "saving" from Hilary's gas tax holiday. The same group who would probably die on a sinking ship with Captain Hilary than get on a lifeboat with a mixed black man. That's Amerikkka, folks.

ReplyDeletegee willikers mom, life is so gosh darn hard and golly gee, some of deh white folke, they just don't not like us; dhey just don't like us at all, what am we tah do?
I've attended several track meets recently in my home town, I watched young mop-haired black boys run around the track with their track shorts positioned at mid-buttock to below the butt-cheeks. Yes, our problem am is white folke in West Virginia.
Where dhey daddies at?
NSangoma
`
"mop-haired"?
ReplyDeleteNSangoma, the first thing I'm going to say is that we -- whether "we" are black folks, white folks, or American folks -- have more than one problem.
It amazes me how [some] people cannot get out of the binary trap of saying "That's not the problem, the problem is THIS!"
Critical thinking, people. Critical thinking. Until we learn how to analyze so that we can vote in an educated, as opposed to a knee-jerk, fashion, that will be a BIG part of the problem.
But the second thing, I want to say, NSangoma, is this.
"mop-haired"?
MOP-HAIRED???
Congratulations.
YOU are officially part of the problem.
"MOP-HAIRED???
ReplyDeleteCongratulations.
YOU are officially part of the problem."
Yes, but I think Nsangoma is aware of that.
"Some places, racial concerns trump political interests; others they don't."
Deacon blue, that is so true. But if political interests include jobs, healthcare, and safety, and still we allow racial concerns to trump those things. Then we have bigger problemns that even I thought.
Field,
ReplyDeleteThere are plenty more of West Virginians in this country. I live in Georgia (metro Atlanta) and they are everywhere. You wouldn't believe the crap I've heard from people.
Sen. Obama has a long way to go...
West Virginia is a non-issue. Hillary was expected to win; she won. So what?
ReplyDeleteI think the more important news is coming out of places like Mississippi where the Rethugs just lost a Congressional seat. Granted, the Democrat who won is no prize (so far to the right he might as well be a Repugnican), but the Repugs ran a lot of ads trying to tie him to Obama -- and using Obama as a negative didn't work. One of the big fears that's been making the rounds (and being used an argument with the superdelegates) regarding the GE is what type of effect Obama would have down ticket; if Mississippi is any indication, the answer is either "none" or "positive."
IMHO, the people who wouldn't vote for Obama because he's black wouldn't vote for any Democrat in the GE (god, guns, and gays will be what sways them) so it's pointless for the party to worry about hanging on to them.

Deh first eberything has to be a mulattoe: teachers, doctors, generals in the armed forces, supreme court justices; and now President of the United States.
Mulattoes have traditionally gotten the jobs first, the education first, the nookie first, and yall are quite satisfied with waiting in line and going in after them.

But there really are no significant policy differences between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. They tried to highlight some minor points during the debates, but they were meaningless: if one of them actually is elected [heaven forfend!] the Congress will change their proposals in far greater degree than the differences between the two candidates.
But if blacks vote for Mr Obama by more than 90% margins, while whites give a majority of their votes to Mrs Clinton, the numbers say that white voters are the ones more willing to vote for someone of another race than is the case for black voters. Saying that white voters who prefer a white candidate solely because that candidate is white must be racist implies that black voters who choose a black candidate simply because he is black must be racist as well.

Yeah, telling people who aren't like you that they are stupid is a really great way to win their friendship and votes.
You may be the most brilliant person in the world, but the "nice" person in WV you just denigrated has the same vote you do.
Well, Mr. Field, I think that HRC wins was expected, but it hasn't change anything. Remember when Moses came to Pharaoh, and demanded that he (Pharaoh) let Israel go. Pharaoh was defiant. But in the end God freed Israel in His own time.
ReplyDeleteSo it is with this election. I am convinced that Someone bigger that the electorate is at play.
God choses kings and God deposes kingdom. Just look around you and see the signs that are happening. It is by no accident or coincident that Mr. Obama is running for President of these United States, it is by Divine Decree and that we cannot change. Only God with bring that election race to a close.
Long live the Senator from Illinois.
Peace
They had on the news, that out of those white people who cared about race, a full third voted for Obama. WV, I'm proud of you.
ReplyDeleteIt would be better if he was full on black, you know -- in the progressive areas in WV, you hear "nothin against those blacks, but I wouldn't want my daughter to marry one". Sexism and racism in one sentence.
Watch out for the busloads of kids from Appalachia going to NYC -- they point and say, "hey, those are black people!"
But above and beyond the racism, these are bitter folk who are used to politicians never giving a fig about them. Obama will win them next election, I hope.
They don't know any better, a lot of them, and what you get from TV, well... it isn't always so complimentary.
The saddest fact about this is that African American culture and Appalachian culture have a lot of similarities. Particularly about that disrespect for authority (which, having been a teacher, I've enjoyed greatly)
ReplyDeleteElena said "I am convinced that Someone bigger that the electorate is at play. God choses kings and God deposes kingdom. Just look around you and see the signs that are happening."
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what George Bush thinks - God caused him to be elected. We don't need a God-chosen president. Elena, don't you believe what the Bible says? You're looking only at Romans 13. Try Hosea 8:4 "They have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, and I knew it not." That doesn't sound like God chooses kings.
I guess my question is, and shall always be, why do we continue to vote for the Elite?
ReplyDeleteI know Obama is black, and Hillary is a woman, but come on, neither of them grew up in the hood or know what it's like to wonder when, and if the electricity is going to be shut off.
I'm not suggesting we elect "Average Joe," he's already in the White House, and he's fucked things up beyond repair, but how we can say we want "Change," and then continue to elect people who were chosen for us by the Corporate Media?
And while I'm on a role, I guess I'll really piss someone off. Isn't voting For Obama because he's black, the same thing as Not voting for him because he's black?
I'd love to have a black or female president, but not one of these hacks, and I can't bring myself to vote for them simply based on their skin color or genitalia.
King took to the streets, and risked his life to bring about change. Obama gives speeches, and Hillary? Shit, she never met a lie she didn't didn't at least invite in for coffee.

You seem to forget that nobody was complaining when "blacks" were voting for Bill at more than 90%. So finally when someone comes along with the message of hope and he happens to be black and blacks people vote for him then that must be racist which is utter bullshit. Blacks were for Hillary until Barack won Iowa then Slick Bill pulled the race card in South Carolina and now has continuously used racial codewords to insult African Americans. When black people vote and Obama supporters for that matter, they are voting FOR a candidate, not against a candidate because they happen to be a woman, the same can't be said about Clinton supporters. There has been documented incidents of Clinton supporters who are ONLY voting for Clinton because they don't like the black guy. That's what the win in West Virgina was truly about. The message in West Virgina was loud & clear: we don't like Hillary but we'll vote for her over the black guy.
Watch this video about racism that Obama faced in West Virgina.

The Wright thing, and similar stuff, give white people cover: it allows them to believe that Obama is a crypto-racist and makes it respectable and intelligent to vote against him.
ReplyDeleteThe Republicans just have to keep it alive, kicking around in the closets of conscienceness. They don't have to beat people over the head with it, it just has to surface every 2 weeks until November. Then the question is how many Democrats peel off and vot efor McCain. It will be close thing, but it may be all the Republican have, in the end.
Hillary's hubris is destructive, because she provides continuity for this junk. She helps the Republicans keep the beast alive through the summer, without the unseemliness of a what amounts to a whispering campaign before the conventions.
Hillary still had the name recognition in West Virginia, and I don't think Senator Obama had much time there to get his message out. I think it can be more damaging to his campaign to assume that the people of West Virginia voted based on race. I beleive that if Obama is the nominee, the Democrats of West Virginia will vote for him. It's playing into Clinton Camp's tactics to alienate those voters by calling them racists.
ReplyDeletePeople are basically sheep who follow the lead, that's why momentum is so important to a political campaign.
Weak showing among White Supremacists raises questions of Electability for Obama
ReplyDelete-AP Newswire
Hillary Clinton's blowout in the state of West Virginia on Tuesday underscored Obama's difficulty in securing the all-important Cross-Burner vote in the upcoming general election. Depite wearing a flag-lapel pin during a game of Pool in Charleston and championing causes to help low-income Americans, local racists were not impressed.
"Mah granpaw din't vote fer no nigra. Ah shore won't." So said one bar-room observer. Another onlooker, not wishing to be named, noted "Ah ain't racist, ya understan. Ah just think he's a little big for his britches bein' a darkie an all."
One passerby who was willing to be quoted, Mr. U. Ruckus, was loitering outside the bar-room, which generally frowns on Black patrons. "Gawd bless white Hillary. She smells so nice and and has given us undeservin' nigras so much. I just don't know how Osama - or whatever his name is - can be so ungrateful."
Just like the majority of whites in the Deep South who vote against their own best interests when they pull the lever for the GOP, its not about the party or its stand, its that the party is anti-black, and, that's all that matters.
ReplyDeleteI for one feel not one shred of sympathy for the poor, white, uneducated voter, for crying out loud, they have had every advantage to get ahead based on one thing, skin color and failed to use it. Hill knew that when she said "white" she had sealed the deal, and the dummies fell for it, kind of like she did since she seems to have not known, they vote GOP in most elections.
This thread is a perfect example of how folks, even when they are winning, are willing to be sidetracked if not derailed by something like West Virgina.
ReplyDeleteAs for the piling on about West Virginians, let me remind you about illiterate DeShawn and DeWayne standing on the corner in their baggy pants sling drugs with no future whatsoever. Pot, meet kettle.
My only experience with West Virginians was when a family from there moved into our suburban, working class, southern California neighborhood in the '70s, and later, shot my kitten when it ran up their tree.
ReplyDeleteThey were shocked to find out this wasn't considered acceptable behavior.
I rely on this experience when I generalize to all West Virginians the tell them that they can all f@#k off.
John Edwards to Endorse Obama Tonight at 7p.m.?

These hillbillies will never take part in the Americna Experience. It takes brain, effort, and drive. Are you telling me (with a straight face) that Obama wins 90% of the black vote (in a Democratic primary, no less), because his policies are SO DIFFERENT from her's? I don't think so.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the poor and forgotten in Appalachia - One: lets not be quite so condescending regarding their intelligence. We would all be infuriated (and rightly so)if similar inmplications were made regarding poor inner-city folks. Two: They have been poor and forgotten through Republican AND Democratic administrations, and will remain so regardless of who wins this thing.
I'm a white guy who grew up very conservative (though my political views are morphing as a grow and learn), and I want Obama to win BECAUSE he's black. And I'm ok with the fact that that is "racial politics." Why? Because I believe an Obama victory (both in this race and in the general election) will lift this country up, and propel it forward in ways nothing else could. And this country NEEDS that. But, I'm not gonna be hypocritical and act as though I am above "racial politics" when THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I AM PARTICIPATING IN MYSELF!
And some commenter above implied (or even outright said) something like "Amerikkka is all like W.V.) needs some help interpreting primary results. Last I checked "all of Amerikka" was voting en masse for Obama. Hyperbole just makes YOU look ignorant.
@ Mold:
"These hillbillies will never take part in the Americna Experience. It takes brain, effort, and drive. So now, when they find that the good FSM has left them with poor study habits, congential brain damage from moms drug habits, and the historical aversion to honest labor they weep the sour grapes song."
Wow, sounds like something many commentors on this site would LOSE THEIR SHIT OVER if a white person said this about blacks. Why am I not surprised though that no outrage is expressed? Besides, how the F*** do you know what their work habits are like? Your arrogance is astounding but it probably belies your own ignorance and lack of self-awareness. What have you done that is so valuable to society? (And posting on here doesn't count...)
As for the piling on about West Virginians, let me remind you about illiterate DeShawn and DeWayne standing on the corner in their baggy pants sling drugs with no future whatsoever. Pot, meet kettle.
ReplyDelete*************
That's why we need change...Obama is that change.
Hey Field, did you know that the toothbrush was invented in West Virginia? Yes, really, because if it were invented anywhere else it'd be called the teethbrush.
ReplyDeleteBad-dum ching!
I have a Spanish friend (like, fron Spain) who campaigned for Obama and was told that he looked like an Arba and better get out of town...really, this is OUR country in pockets fromn coast to coast...the last and only time I've been to West VA was at a rest stop in the middle of nowhere. Everyone I saw had really long ears and noses in that inbred way and stared at me like I was a space alien...just my experience.
The ugly side of West Virginia is expressed in this video :

LOL Jaded Liberal!
ReplyDeleteChristopher, I saw that item about the "possible" Edwards endorsement on the Huffington Post at 7pm EST.
Just in time for the network evening newscasts!
Better late than never,I guess.
I wonder what Obama promised him? I'm hoping Attorney General.
I'll hold my nose and see what kind of spin Chris Matthews puts on it in a couple of minutes.....

Why is it that this is called a RACIST t-shirt and it has hateful motivations behind it BUT;
(Excuse me for a minute while I go to Google Image search and type in "Bush Chimp". Be right back)
Here you go - see for yourself:
http://images.google.com/images?q=bush%20chimp&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi
Can we logically conclude - and we are all adults here - that it is not the IMAGE that proves racist.....but the application and the sensitivities of the RECEIVER?
Please note the picture from "Democratic Underground".
Field-Negro, et al : Do you have any plans to PREEMPTIVELY tell your ideological soul mates that THEY HAVE CROSSED THE LINE if an when they do something to YOUR POLITICAL ADVERSARY that you would not tolerate being done with your ideological soul mate?
(Is it A-merri-ca that is not ready for a Black president or YOU not ready to allow a Black man to be president and all of the attacks that come with the JOB?)
But WVa didn't count!
ReplyDeleteConstructive Feedback your line "that it is not the image that proves racist.. but the sensitivities of the Receiver" pretty much disqualfies you from sensible and honest conversation about race or anything else for that matter.
ReplyDeleteI always suspected that you and your perspective shouldn't really be taken seriously.
Everybody who is Black knows that Black folk have regularly been referred to over the centuries as apes and monkeys. Please!!!
Field--this is what I've been saying in the press for months. Axelrod and crew are too much in the yuppie/student/bourgie bubble and should have flipped the script on this months ago. The case is easy. O man and Hillary are almost alike in certain policy areas--certainly far afield fom the bumbling wingnut stuff people are feeding Mr. Morton...and yet these white folks would back her...and presumably vote for McCain if she's not the nominee? Lord if you can't come with plain English and balls to hit back on that, then what use is your campaign staff? O man as lightweight, Part IV. It's best to just force folks in the mirror if they are so inclined not to like you anyway.
ReplyDelete"Why is it that this is called a RACIST t-shirt and it has hateful motivations behind it BUT;"
ReplyDeletecons..feedback, you are right. I actually think chimps are kind of cute.
"Excuse me for a minute while I go to Google Image search and type in "Bush Chimp". Be right back)"
Yeah but doesn't he kind of look like a chimp? Honestly, I think that's why he won twice. A-merry-cans really do love their pets ;)
Now to some people who actually made some good points: dmd, I feel you, and I think it IS dangerous to start lumping people into groups. But you have to understand how black folks just play the dozens sometimes.(see thembi's comments) We are so used to having it done to us, that we think nothing of doing it to other
people. But I LOVE your honesty.
"As for the piling on about West Virginians, let me remind you about illiterate DeShawn and DeWayne standing on the corner in their baggy pants sling drugs with no future whatsoever."
And worst of all, they don't vote :(
Chris, JE endorses the "O" man. That's called an Ice Queen mo killer.
In my experience, it's always a bad idea to voice an opinion on any point Constructive Opinion has made, but his point does need a response from someone, and I'm stuck at the keyboard right now.
ReplyDeleteWhether or not the monkey on the T-shirt was originally MEANT as a racial attack isn't really the point. A monkey reference with Bush would be something relating to his lack of highly evolved intellect...frankly, something he has proven over and over again. He aint' smart people.
But with porch monkey and other ape/monkey references, the implication of racial hate in the case of the "Curious Obama" monkey image is too strong here. Surely, even if they didn't PLAN to make a racial attack, the T-shirt folks must have learned/figured out by now that it is being received as such, and for legitimate historical reasons.
So, to KEEP making them shows that they are willing to be insensitive to an entire people about a touchy racial issue to make money. Nothing illegal about that, but that also doesn't make it RIGHT.
Sure, my hackles went up when a white money referred to my daughter as an "active little monkey" some months back, but I realized that she almost certainly wasn't aware it might be taken racially, since white folks compare active white kids to monkeys, too. So, I had a viceral reaction inside, but I didn't react to the person.
This situation is a good deal different than that.
Of course, Constructive will almost certainly disagree with me, and I will do everyone the very great favor of not getting bent when he does.
Hmmm...I should have edited that comment better. I had "white money" instead of "white mother". Plus, despite disagreeing with him, I regret getting Constructive Feedback's name wrong. Contructive Opinion must have been a Freudian slip.
ReplyDeleteaf --- good points, I'd forgotten about her vote on bankruptcy bill. That's pretty evil. I think 3 strikes is awful but it's my understanding that's a state issue. I'm ok with the welfare reform that was passed. I see that as an extension of the closing of the projects which weren't doing anyone good in the long run. That's how it worked were I live anyhow.

Lawdsy, watch out Hillary!! 'Cause John Edwards is most definitely a good ole boi.
But oopz, wait, who will Mrs. $400.00 haircut be campaigning for in Kentucky?

mellaneaneous:
ReplyDeleteI was going to quote the "stupid" part of your last post but as I read it.....THE ENTIRE POST is stupid.
Do you not see that YOUR (il)logic is why we are now suffering from internal terminal cancer but still focus our attention upon the external gashes and the threat there in?
Two pictures of the SAME concept - referring to a HUMAN BEING as an "ape/chimp/monkey"
According to GOD (and the scientists who have confirmed his work) - BOTH OF THESE INDIVIDUALS are 100% GENETICALLY THE SAME!
The only physical difference between these two population sets are MATING DECISIONS OVER TIME!! (Hell - Obama can claim to have 50% of that which the offending White folks have!!)
But oh - lets talk about the MIND. Let's talk about the MIND. Indeed these two population groups have a different set of SENSITIVITIES regarding the reference to the MONKEY.
Now let's be clear. I am not saying that there was no RACIST INTENT by the red neck White folks who posted the pictures. I assure you that they are as ignorant and as hateful as the fools that I have witnessed over time on DemocraticUnderground and Democrats.com for years.
I am just floored as to how YOU ALL can see the same MUGGING and respond so differently. (this is the illogic of "hate crimes laws". Where as you have watched the one guy get attacked in this same way for years and did not tell your ideological soul mates to PULL UP......now when your ideological enemies use the SAME DAMNED IMAGERY.......you claim that it is DIFFERENT. Negro Please!!
The only difference is that THE WHITE MAN has your RACIAL CONFIDENCE in his hand!!!
You need to RETURN YOUR YOLK into your own domain of control.
I have told you before that instead of being an operative for the evil "Black Conservatives" I instead have set out to STUDY MY PEOPLE. What makes them tick. What are the grounds that has them so beholden in the way that we are, willing to latch on to a machine that promises to express our "best interests" but are not made to do so before we walk any further with them.
It is clear to me that some of you have some self confidence issues. (I am serious). You express your PERSONAL insecurities via the projection of them ON YOUR ENTIRE RACE.
One toothless white man in Alabama who calls you a name is able to define you REGARDLESS of the lack of relative power that he has over you. What makes this ONE MAN so powerful?
Being in Atlanta I saw that portions of the Civil Rights Industrial complex filled their tanks up with $3.69 gasoline and drove up to Cobb County to CONFRONT this WHITE MAN who owns the restaurant. I marvel at the tendency of these operatives to drive past the Vine City section of the ATL who's homicide closer rate of Black people killing Black people is 32% and then head up to confront WHITE FOLKS in Cobb, Forsyth or Douglas County.
Many say that it is not an "either or situation - we can do BOTH". The problem is that BOTH is not being done. Clearly the INSULT by the WHITE MAN trumps the ASSAULT by the Black man.
The problem is that our community has learned how to STAND IN OPPOSITION to an external threat but surely needs to learn how to MANAGE our INTERNAL RESOURCES so they don't become a cancerous threat.
Some of you confuse advancement in the American political domain with advancement with respect to our INTERNAL community domain. There are some linkages but CLEARLY they are not the same.
Can you all imagine if Obama is elected how much mileage some of you are going to put on your car as you CHASE?
(You do know my functional label for the Black Liberal is "Black Quasi-Socialist Progressive-Fundamentalist RACISM CHASER, right?)
In my experience, it's always a bad idea to voice an opinion on any point Constructive Opinion has made, but his point does need a response from someone, and I'm stuck at the keyboard right now.
ReplyDeleteIn other words - deacon blue - IGNORE HIM and he'll go away. The strategy of many an ostrich.
But wait - this says nothing about a MATERIAL rebuttal of what I have said.

Amazing.
Some of you have adopted the ways of your own adversaries and apply them as effectively as they do.
So let's toy with your argument a bit Deacon Blue to see if it passes the 5 day expired milk test.
Are you saying that if a Black person who is a public figure displayed the same "lack of intellectual evolution" that YOU SAY Bush displays that you and other African-Americans would agree that by his living up to (or down to) this standard that this man could earn the association with a chimp?
I am glad that you are not a law maker nor judge. Your adversaries who break the law would suffer greatly. Your friends that break the law would feast.
If a man (black white or purple) was that much of a blithering idiot, yeah, compare him to a chimp or a baboon. But we all know that a black man gotta be better than Vitter, gotta be better than Abramoff, gotta be better than Indhofe (who is another chimp), gotta be better than Tubes Stevens.
ReplyDelete[can we compare Michael Jackson to a pig? I think that fits better...]
Cause black people will Find Someone Better, otherwise.
My black relatives in Israel have heard that line about blacks "just come down from the trees." Racism ain't just an American thing!
@ Constructive
ReplyDeleteIgnoring you around here is impossible. I hardly have my head stuck in the sand nor do I think you're going anyplace. My complaint is that everything with you turns into an argument. I'm going to respond to your rebuttal to me, and then I am going to stop. If you feel the need to screech at this latest post, feel free, but I will refuse to engage you further. We'll treat this like a debate...you get your point, I get mine, and we each get one rebuttal. Fair enough?
Monkey/ape images are very specifically racial in this country. If Obama where to show himself to be an idiot...or another black leader were to do so...I wouldn't see any particular problem with an image that puts a dunce cap on that person, or some other non-racial image of stupidity. But a chimp for a black man is a racial attack...or certainly LOOKS like one.
Images of greed with respect to Jews are bigoted. Images of monkeys/apes with respect to blacks is bigoted. Images of angry looking, turban-wearing & gun-toting people with respect to Arabs in general is bigoted. Images of drunken louts with respect to Irish folks is bigoted.
My point is that certain images applied to certain groups isn't very respectful or decent. Ever.
Now, I made a pretty calm point about it all. I even acknowledged there's nothing wrong legally with it. I didn't sit in judgment about anyone's right to make an Obama-is-a-monkey shirt. I'm simply pointing out why people have a legitimate reason to be angry about it.
But by all means if you want to be shrill with me some more because you cannot stand an opinion contrary to your own...be my guest. I'm just not going any farther with this.
rglrlrkr, thanks for that interesting and insightful comment. I will check out that link.
ReplyDelete
We'll treat this like a debate...you get your point, I get mine, and we each get one rebuttal. Fair enough?

Blue - how about this.
You respond one time and then ignore my response when I tear your reasoning to shreds.
Check out this web site Blue. It has 5.1 MILLION HITS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No Civil Rights protests have taken place during this time span.
I simply don't buy your distinction when it is used in the fraudulent manner that you attempt.
In fact, I'll put it back on you - ONCE AGAIN - as indeed Black people have been associated with monkeys for purposes of slander....HAVING SEEN someone else make use of this imagery in the course of partisan/ideological slander - YOU should tell your leftwing extreme friends about the history of this image and that NO HUMAN BEING, regardless of his color should be associated as such. A portion of Barack Obama's difficulties with Wright is that when he had a chance to tell his long time advisor to "pull up" because he had crossed a line that Obama says he had...he remained SILENT instead because both he was not the target and he didn't want to be come one. "Don't do unto others which is hurtful to you" has never been more appropriate.
You can't even maintain this standard as you wrote about evil Bush's demonstration of un-evolved thinking that is "ape like".
It is not lost on me the racial importance of this current presidential race. Where as many of you are looking at WHITE FOLKS and making note of their tolerance and antics - for me I am looking at THEM AND BLACK FOLKS.
It is clear to me when they say "American is not ready for a Black president" it is clear that SOME BLACK AMERICANS must be included in that criticism of "American's" readiness.
OK, civil discourse doesn't work. Check. Won't even consider a thought not his own. Check. Always has to act an ass. Check. Exhibits an overwhelming and overblown sense of self-importance. Check.
ReplyDeleteWell, I think I've finally proved to myself once and for all that Constructive Feedback's avatar should, instead of a ceramic head, be a brick wall...all the better for pointlessly beating our heads against.
"It is clear to me when they say "American is not ready for a Black president" it is clear that SOME BLACK AMERICANS must be included in that criticism of "American's" readiness."
ReplyDeleteLet me try to follow this [philly soft] pretzel logic: White A-merry-cans aren't ready for a black president because, well, he is BLACK. And black people criticize them for this position, ergo, black people aren't ready for a black president. ??????????
Yeah.....Okay.
"Exhibits an overwhelming and overblown sense of self-importance."
Well somebody has to do it:)
Field, I give you huge credit for even being able to untangle that pretzel. It was too much of a Moebius loop for me to handle.
ReplyDeleteConstructive says (and I roughly summarize): "Representing a human being with the image of an ape is slanderous and speaks to the character of one doing so REGARDLESS OF COLOR." (my emphasis)
ReplyDeletePeople here on this site say: "Some of white America isn't ready for a black President because they slanderously represent Obama with the image of an ape (BUT THE SLANDER ISN'T DEFINED IN RELATION TO HIS HUMANITY, IT IS DEFINED IN RELATION TO HIS BLACKNESS)." (my emphasis again)
Constructive infers that the very same root problem with the white racist is present in some black folks as well, namely that people in both groups are willing to dehumanize those that are different, be it physically or ideologically.
So, yeah maybe the black folks willing to dehumanize ARE ready for a black Prez., but they don't seem to be much further down the road of being ready to be CONSISTENT WITH THEIR OWN CRITICISMS OF WHITE FOLKS.
The readiness of folks for a black Prez. is not the point. The racism is the point. Said another way, the dehumanizing is the point. And if dehumanizing is wrong, it's wrong for all.
(And yes I know blacks have been dehumanized much more historically in this country. But, didn't Field just recently have a post about two wrongs not making a right...?)
Look, dmd I get the point that we shouldn't spread hatefullness and that two wrongs don't make a right. But let's not push the "dehumanization" thing TOO far. The issue with Curious George and Barack Obama is the use of a traditionally RACIST image. That isn't far off the mark of using the N-word.
ReplyDeleteWhen animal images are used in general for folks, that isn't necessarily dehumanization as such but imagery/metaphor/parody. There is a difference.
The guy at Mulligans can say all he wants that he just thinks cute little Curious George and Obama look a lot alike...but he knows that blacks are taking offense and he doesn't care. I can tell from the way he's responded in the news and the fact he's gearing up to make more of these T-shirts, last I heard, after selling out of them...depsite the rancor this is raising.
if you portrayed some Russian political leader as a bear...or an ardent democrat as an ass (since the donkey is the symbol of the party)...or a Republican as Dumbo (since the elephant is theirs), these are not dehumanizing acts. And portraying Dubya as a chimp is not dehumanizing him. Why? Because the image doesn't resonate. It doesn't STICK.
Monkey and ape images STICK when it comes to black folks. I don't think it's dehumanizing. I think it's just plain racist. All the more so because the guy who made the shirts can no longer play ignorant to the fact it is racist.
To put it another way, I would be offended on behalf of our current prez, no matter how much I despise him, if someone were to put out a cartoon or image that suggested he makes his decisions the way he does because he's snorting coke and slamming down bottles of whiskey. You know why? Because despite all his MANY flaws, he seems to be someone who's gotten past his addictions and is trying to rise above THAT part of his life at least. And it would be offensive to suggest otherwise.
Field, I've already said this, but we need a wartime consigliere in this campaign.
ReplyDeleteObama has got the nomination, and while I'vd been for Hillary, I don't think we lose, just as long as McCain doesn't win: not only is he right wing and none too bright, he's crazy.
Nobody has ever accused Hillary of being too nice to her opponent in the primaries. She's a junkyard dog. Run her for Veep and sic her on McCain
And black people criticize them for this position, ergo, black people aren't ready for a black president. ?????????
ReplyDeleteThings seem to map out easily when you "mangle" a person's words - don't they Field Negro?
How many formerly upstanding Black people have been called "Handkerchief Head Negroes" for supporting a different Democrat than the "Black guy"? Maya Angelou is now a part of that crowd.
Stephanie Tubbs-Jones who in 2004, wearing her silk scarf told Black Democrats of the glories that would be had if the Democrats take back over the Congress. You all were pleased with her words then.
Turns out that the silk scarf she was wearing......was actually an "Aunt Jemimah" head rap now that she is out of favor.
Are White people and your attempts to correct them the center of your universe? I bet you there are many Black people who live in West Philly who go through an entire day without seeing a White person as they operate within their community. Why do you make them such a reference?
Thus - You ain't ready.
People here on this site say: "Some of white America isn't ready for a black President because they slanderously represent Obama with the image of an ape (BUT THE SLANDER ISN'T DEFINED IN RELATION TO HIS HUMANITY, IT IS DEFINED IN RELATION TO HIS BLACKNESS)." (my emphasis again)
ReplyDeleteThank you DMD.
You do know that you have just ruined your chances of being voted "Brother of the Year".
Fieldnegro and Deacon Blue have are members of the panel and the panel only has two members. You would be better off to stay silent and let them do their thing IF you want to get their vote and later have your picture in Jet Magazine.
BY THE WAY - Prof. Boyce Watkins in his running battle with (racist) Bill O'Reilly called O'Reilly a "chimp".
Some of you just don't get it.
When animal images are used in general for folks, that isn't necessarily dehumanization as such but imagery/metaphor/parody. There is a difference.
ReplyDeleteAgain - I am so glad that YOU are no JUDGE over me where my personal freedom is based on YOUR jaundiced interpretations.
Monkey and ape images STICK when it comes to black folks.
Speak for your damned self.
Instead of allowing someone ELSE to define my "equality/superiority/inferiority" I would pull out a science book and show them:
Biological differences among races do not exist, WU research shows
http://record.wustl.edu/archive/1998/10-15-98/articles/races.html
Thus the proper answer is: RIGHT BACK AT CHA!!
For the record, Constructive, I'm not on the panel to vote someone in as Brother of the Year here...and I wouldn't be speaking for myself about monkey images sticking to me as a black man...
ReplyDelete...because I'm not black.
Sorry if I seem to see white America often shitting on black folks...but I am seeing this as a white person. Doesn't make me any more right or wrong than anyone else around here. But since you seem to be assuming I'm black, let me set you straight so that you get at least one fact right.
Oh, and I don't have any beef with DMD. For the record, DMD, while I didn't agree with you, I thought you presented a reasonable and non-asshole-ish point. Unlike a certain individual around these parts.
Incidentally, with all the other folks who've jousted vigorously with C.F., how is it that somehow, Field and I are the only ones singled out as passing judgment on who has "proper" opinions? How could you leave all your other foes out, C.R.? You fickle bastard you.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I don't see how I rate any kind of co-equal status (only two members? Me and Field?) on anything with Field ON HIS OWN BLOG. Just sayin'
The NAACP and NUL have several White members on its leadership committee. From day one of our freedom - the White Liberal has always been among the inner circle working as a moderating force.
ReplyDeleteBrother Malcolm X spoke of you Foxes. Sadly while he is oft quoted this particular piece of guidance is seemingly skipped over.
For the record - I don't know you and I am not a racist. I am not blind to the function of the White Liberal, however.
But this is really why I returned to this board. This is just for you Blue:
http://parallelhood.blogspot.com/2008/05/two-different-types-of-monkeys.html
Great. But while I may lean toward the left, I'm not a liberal. You painted me as a liberal once before and now you do so again. I am not. Leaning somewhat leftward doesn't make me a liberal; in fact, I have several viewpoints that would disqualify me from the left wing immediately.
ReplyDeleteI hardly think I'm a fox, White Fox or otherwise. I'm not offended that you compare me to an animal; just pick the right one. I am not sly, I am not a thief, I'm not a trickster and I'm not all that cute.
And no, I don't suffer from liberal white guilt either. My motivations in all things racial is to try to be fair and treat other folks like humans. That I have a particular interest in things black is simply because I'm the only person in my nuclear family who is pale (Wife, black. Kids, biracial.).
I am not serving a function in this blog or in the black community. I am a concerned citizen and, I hope, a friend to more people than I am an enemy.
You're right, C.F., you DON'T know me. Trouble is, you don't try to know anyone. If you did, maybe you'd feel worse about the way you attack folks and refuse to actually discuss or listen. You lecture and harangue. Badly. And rudely.
But, as always, I'm speaking to someone who doesn't give a damn anyway, so why bother saying anything at all? I guess b/c I keep hoping you'll eventually pay attention. And b/c every time you misrepresent me, I feel I have to clear things up.
But excuse me, I have to go to my liberal white guilt fox-in-the-henhouse Cacausian meeting now.
Blue:
ReplyDeleteWhat YOU call my "attacks" are in truth the fact that I am one of the FEW who actively participate on this board with a divergent point of view. I will not name names but some would rather rant, rant, rant without having any push back on THEIR slander. When I "attack" I try to get these people to own up to their claims.
My motivations in all things racial is to try to be fair and treat other folks like humans.
Fair To Other Like Humans.
Blue - do you ask this of YOUR IDEOLOGICAL SOULMATES as much as you ask of your enemies?
If indeed you took this mandate to heart you would not have attempted to push that rather weak justification as to why referring to evil Bush as a chimp is NOT the same as referring to Obama, the Black guy, as a chimp.
This is both the heart of the illogic of "Hate Crimes Legislation" and the perpetuation of the assumption of BLACK INFERIORITY. To be clear the biggest purveyor of "Black Inferiority" are us BLACK PEOPLE OURSELVES!!! I refuse to hand over my PERSONAL consciousness let alone my "racial consciousness" that sits atop of it to another person and then plead for him to run turn it to me.
If indeed we need to focus on SCIENCE rather than allowing politics to trump it - why aren't those who perpetuate this chimp/Black notion AS WELL AS those Blacks who accept it as being ANTI-SCIENCE?
Of course if there was a gang of white boys with sticks chasing behind me calling me monkey AND wanting to do physical harm to me - then indeed my position changes commensurate to the physical threat.
If this imagery is offensive - fight to remove it from the political lexicon. Go to DemocraticUnderground and Democrats.com and tell them to STOP USING THIS OFFENSIVE IMAGE. I will then join the protests in front of the local eatery upon seeing you do your part.
C.F., I'm done...this comment thread has gone on far too long already. You're spinning in the exact same logical (or illogical) circle you have been all this time. I'm dizzy. So is anyone else who still bothers to check this comment thread, most likely. But frankly, I think it's just you and me at this point, and I'm tired of talking in circles. The dinner party is over. Be careful on the drive back home.
