The real deal?

I was reading an article by Eve Fairbanks in "Politics Magazine" about authenticity. It was an interesting article from a writer who I have a fair amount of respect for. Ms. Fairbanks took issue with A-merry-cans and their insatiable appetite for an authentic President.

Fairbanks takes aim at the three main players in this primary season's run for the Presidency. She calls out Hillary Clinton for making millions of dollars in the past few years, and yet casting herself as a woman of the people. A regular blue collar girl. To her millions of followers, that made her authentic, and to the A-merry-can voter, that made her more than electable.

John McCain is seen as authentic because he can't "control his mouth", and the whole independent maverick thing is a label that was given to him by a fawning press, led by writers such as E.J. Dionne, who were spurred on by the "straight talk express" dog and pony show.

So because of this love of authenticity by the A-merry-can electorate, the "O" man had a problem. Because, unlike Hillary and McCain, he was not seen as authentic. Too "chilly", too "polished", and his speeches were too "egg-heady" (hey, those were her words, not mine). Fairbanks suggested at the time, that Obama could not compete with Hillary's "blue collar" persona, or John McCain's "loud mouth" authenticity; so he was starting behind the eight ball from the get go.

Now Obamaholics will tell you that their man was and is the most authentic, and Fairbanks acknowledges this in her piece. She says that Obamaholics claim their man is the most authentic because he is the most cool, polished, and the most at ease in his skin. But careful Obamaholics, the frat boy was seen by many A-merry-cans as the most at ease in his skin, and the most cool. And of course you all see where that got us. I mean why should we trade competence for authenticity? Still, that seems to be what the A-mery-can electorate craves; authenticity over all else. They loved that Reagan didn't they? They thought he was a real cowboy, when in truth, he was nothing but a damn second rate actor, and one of the worse Presidents, ever. Right up there with the frat boy. Why the "O" man is trying to go back to that, I will never know.

Yes folks, even your beloved "O" man is trying to seem authentic. He is trying to become more patriotic (somehow A-merry-cans associate being patriotic with being authentic), more down to earth, more middle A-merry-ca, more...well, authentic. He is trying to get elected by seeming authentic to folks who value such things, and cool and comfortable to the Obamaholics. It's a tough trick, but if anybody can pull it off, I think he can.

Still, I don't know. The very thought of an authentic politician just doesn't sit right with me. That's kind of like a whore calling herself shy, don't you think? In this day an age most politicians seem to have the ability to lie to their opponents, their supporters, and most of all, to themselves. Because politics is totally antithetical to authenticity, yet A-merry-cans try to connect the two.

Authenticity, I guess, is like beauty, it's in the eyes of the beholder. And right about now the "O" man and Mr. Morton are hoping that A-merry-cans will look at them and see their soul mate.
With the "O" man, of course, that will be literal.

I want Obama to have his shot at it. He wins my state no matter what anyhow.

Reagan shut down the USSR in a poker game, Field. He deserves credit for that. You'd prefer Carter? If Obama emulates him, he'd be a authentic dumb ass. He has released what staff he had from that era. Good for him.

Authentic: adjective: not counterfeit or copied

No doubt Obama is an original. Getting so many moths to believe in his "audacity" and "change" message in order to win the Democratic primary was a good strategy.

Now that he is moving away from the core platform that the extreme left (ex: as represented on this site) in order to sell his message to the rest of America who are not as died in the wool as you all are.

I have to agree with you - Obama is not counterfeit.....many of you all are.

Him moving to from Kansas to south Chicago to work for ACORN is not authentic. They employ wannabe politicians and umm people down on their luck, and Marxists only. And maybe really stupid people that don't mind not getting paid. ACORN started in Little Rock, I know their history. He joined a church he doesn't agree with now, Oh Yes authentic. If he'd bailed out before the race I'd give him a break on that one, but not ACORN.

I see him as an ideologue in the mold of Roosevelt? sort of? But not so much original or authentic. He followed a script and I don't know who wrote it, doesn't matter much at this point I guess.

Although Obama's mother's people were from Kansas, he didn't live there. His youth was mostly spent in Honolulu, Hawaii. He moved to California for his first college experience in the Los Angeles area.

Why do you say he "moved from Kansas to South Chicago"?

That horse with Reagan looked authentic.
Reagan was an asshole. I should know. I am from California and know exactly what he was about. He was dedicated to making the rich richer and the poor poorer. He took one of the best public educational systems in the country and wrecked it. He threw mentally ill people out on the street to die. He called Caesar Chavez and his followers "bums." He had no heart.
I can't understand what anyone ever saw in him.

... Reagan shut down the USSR in a poker game, Field. He deserves credit for that. You'd prefer Carter? ...
    szechuanpork 11:20 PM

Reagan's goal was to destroy, dismantle The New Deal. Bleed-out The New Deal via lower taxes on the rich and more government spending on the military; remember Star Wars. Zilch for national infrastructure and national education.

The US, Britain, France, et alia invaded Russia in 1918 to overthrow the Bolsheviks. The Russians have had damn good reasons to be paranoid and militaristic. I am not saying that the Russians are/were the good guys, I am saying that the Russians had historical memory that led them to do the things that they did.

Bush has tried to follow the Reagan plan, that is, to continue to dismantle The New Deal. Tax cuts for the very rich along with gi-normous military spending. The goal is that the country gets into so much debt that social services have to be cut or eliminated in order to make up for the revenue shortfall. The Bush plan is not working too tough, we are borrowing money from China to cover us.

From the jump, Mr. Morton has promised to do the same thing; he has said, 'he will lower taxes again for the rich, whilst ending the deficit.' The money to bring down the deficit comes from continuing to spend down, social services and The New Deal.

I'm starting to ramble, back to the topic at hand. The world is being turned upside down financially and economically; new world powers are emerging, China; new financial and economic regional powers are emerging, Brazil, and India.

The goal of Bush and of McCain is to protect the rich and the very rich from the coming (now upon us) economic and financial upheavals; the hell with the rest of us.

Of course we always have war and the threats of war as justification for electing republican presidents. The authentic republicans are going to protect us from enemies seen and unseen; whilst the wimp democrats will not; actually, we need protection from the republicans.

Carter's problem as president, szechuanpork, was that he tried to practice his Christianity; internationally as well as nationally. Don't bring up the Iranians, szechuanpork, the US had previously overthrown a democratically elected Iranian government. Operation Ajax. Carter knew that, the average American citizen did not.

  18. Reagan shut down the USSR in a poker game, Field. He deserves credit for that.

    Aw, yes.

The iconic mythology of Saint Reagan, who single handedly ended the Cold War and the USSR. The revisionist historians have certainly worked their magic over the decades. What's next? Reagan parted the Red Sea?

Reagan receives far too much credit for ending the Cold War because the fact is, he was just in the right place at the right time. (Remember, it was President Ford signed the Helsinki Accords.)

Back to the mythology of Saint Reagan ending the Cold War and the USSR.

The foundation for the demise of the Soviet Union were put in place long before Reagan was elected president. In fact, the catalyst of the emerging East-West détente, began in November, 1972 in Helsinki, known as the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe. The Helsinki Accords, however, legitimized human rights in the most repressive parts of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union.

Dissidents, like the founders of "Charter 77″ in Czechoslovakia, used the language of the Helsinki Accords to justify their criticisms of communist governments. Many of the dissidents inspired by the Helsinki Accords led the anticommunist revolutions of 1989.

In addition, many of the "new thinkers" in the Soviet Union who came to power after 1985 including Mikhail Gorbachev, explained that they hoped to build a more humane European civilization, as outlined in the Helsinki Accords.

All of this was underway before Reagan could find the USSR on a map. Reagan was not a geopolitical visionary.

Yet the mythology that when Reagan uttered those now famous words, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down those walls," the USSR ceased to exist.

    Nice try.

It was Gorbachev who was determined to take the Soviet Union in a radically different direction (think: glasnost and perestroika) and away from zero-sum competition with the West.

Reagan and his adviser recognized Gorbachev’s goals, far from being traditional, were downright revolutionary and would serve the USA's interests.

Of course revisionist historians have managed to convinced many Americans that Reagan was the protagonist and not Gorbachev. But the facts prove otherwise.

  19. I became an activist when Ronny Raygun said we could "win" a nuclear war. I had just given birth to my second son and worried that my president would destroy my children's future.
Raygun was responsible for the nuclear arms build-up, Iran-Contra, supporting despotic dictators in El Salvador and Nigaragua, supported the Apartheid regime in South Africa, called Mandala a terrorist, supported Pinochet in Chile, supported Marcos in the Philipines, didnt give a damn about AIDS and wouldnt even mention in until well into his second term, trotted out the myth of the welfare queen to get elected, cut funding for schools, busted unions, and gutted our economy by never meeting a defense budget he didnt love....

Like Helms, I am always relieved when that mindset gets off the planet.... they are vestiges of the worst of america and I say good riddance!

I did not realize that Obama had linked up with ACORN. Thanks for this information.

I am on their newsletter mailing list. If there is one organization that has "Wealth Destroying" policies - look no further than this one. I read each addition carefully as a means of understand my ideological adversary carefully. Only the International Socialist Review magazine tops ACORN for their tone deathness with respect to economic truth. (that is unless you factor in the notion that economic LIBERTY has no place in their world - the tax man is central to their theories)

While they would argue that they are "protecting the poor" an objective analysis of their antics would show that they also CREATE POVERTY.

    * They create a business justification for 'red lining' as any bank who wishes to stay in business would realize that their policies that summarily shift liability from the consumer to the bank AND THEN force the government to make risky loans per some "social justice" mandate is a group who have no interest in providing access to capital for the people.

    * I always say about Quasi-Socialists: "The worst condition that you all could ever be in is where you all are all alone, face to face WITH YOUR OWN POLICIES with no enemy conservative to divert your attention toward" thus in ACORN'S "anti-gentrification" fight they effectively insure that communities and the properties within them remain UNDERCAPITALIZED. Instead of allowing these properties to express their true market value; then the homeowners profiting on the sale; and the new owners injecting PRIVATE capital into these homes to bring them up to modern code - they instead fight to keep these "interlopers" out of the community and, GET THIS - seek the GOVERNMENT to provide the financing to FIX UP THIS PRIVATE PROPERTY via Federal Block Grants for neighborhood improvement. THIS POINT IS KEY TO UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE QUASI-SOCIALIST and the normal people in America. They don't see a problem in using government money to fix up their private property in the context of allowing a 'poor person' to remain in the house that they can't otherwise fix up.

So much of the subprime mortgage fiasco is rooted in the complex issues regarding 'poverty politics'. When these same people took out loans against a property who's value was inflated and thus they had immediate cash they, in fact, benefited from the forces of 'gentrification' which ran up their property values. When these people's fixed or limited incomes did not afford them to keep up with the loan payments - they were foreclosed upon.

We must also note the PROGRESSIVE property tax system. Another crop of people lose their homes because the punitive tax system is targeted at 'soaking the rich'. When an otherwise poor person have property that increases in value and the progressive tax system hits them with a tax increase - they are often not able to pay and thus a lien is placed upon the house by the government. They lose their house if they don't pay the lien in a timely manner.

The crazy part is that there might be a PROGRESSIVE mayor presiding over them (as was the case in Atlanta) who damns these lien holders for taking people's houses. All the while it is HIS PROGRESSIVE TAX SYSTEM which was motivated to attack the rich which is the guilty party.

As long as you are poor - progressive policies are you best friend. Get some money - you had better watch out.....the same confiscatory policies that you supported against the rich guy will ensnare you as well.

Authentic? Feh. We elect posturing charlatans as leaders; those who cannot defend the indefensible ad hoc and need the mighty Wurlitzer to play its song. And measure by measure we dance the death of a thousand cuts. If we elected scientists and journeymen instead of bad lawyers and actors, perhaps historical revisionists could be rendered passe -- dare we dream something useful gets accomplished.

By far, Obama is the prefered candidate and is light years ahead in the IQ and reality departments, but he is the consummate politico; he may well topple Bill as the King of Slick. Authentically.

By the time Star Wars happened in the early 1980's, communism was well on its way out. By that time the entire state of East Germany was bankrupt. Economists predicted the collapse of communism as early as the 1950's, simply because the system does not work. All Reagan did was close the coffin door. Soviet Infrastructure was in dire straits, the environment in the USSR was degraded, their scientists and computer experts were way behind ours and this before Reagan was even elected.

  27. I don't think Americans crave authenticity. They crave someone likeable.

Authenticity would mean Americans would have to know themselves; they would have had to understand why invading and occuoying Iraq was wrong; why Iran fears us; why gas prices are high, etc. America is like a morbidly obese person who smokes and is suprised when they have a heart attack.

Now likeability--that's what America wants. A dashing leading man like Will Smith that the rest of the country can attach its self-esteem to and be the bumbling side kick.

Alright Jody - this is the second time that I am typing this since my browser froze up.

First - I have little doubt that you well tell Obama about this "Neo-con war" as he travels to Iraq in a few weeks.

Besides that - did you listen to NPR News and Notes the other day as they debated the news that American oil companies are now in Iraq? The two "lib-gals" in the debate attacked the conservative guy with the notion that this news proves what they have been saying all along - "An Oil War".

These two, like you, were CLUELESS as to how they are CAPITALIST CONSUMER CO-CONSPIRATORS in the matter. Surely "NOW THAT THEY KNOW" they are going to change their consumption pattern of this "bloody commodity".....right?

Jody - Evil Bush should hold a press conference. He should announce his executive order that mandates that all gasoline sold in the USA that comes from Iraq have a red dye added to it to indicate its source. Additionally he should mandate that this gasoline sell for $1.29 per gallon and that gasoline obtained from other sources be sold at market price ($4.05). This one tactic will give people like YOU an opportunity to turn you ABSTRACT THEORIES into real world economic choices.

But Jody - I can imagine you being at this conference. Upon hearing this news you would say "Mr President! Mr President! About this gasoline that you are speaking of. Will this be PREMIUM or REGULAR? When I put that cheap stuff into my tank my car knocks and pings something awful. I don't mess around with that regular. Don't do that to us man!"

Please Jody - retire your abstract theory and implement what you believe into your life.

REDUCE YOUR STANDARD OF LIVING that is a function of that imperialistic American foreign policy that you HATE! You don't need to change the SYSTEM you only need to CHANGE YOUR OWN CONSUMER CO-CONSPIRING activities in order to get right with yourself.

NOW THAT YOU KNOW - Jody - what are you going to do differently with respect to your relationship between your life style and this stolen commodity product?

I think the people who use the word authenticity does not understand the definition of the word. What does it mean to be authentic? If I were to use the obsolete definition of the word, it would mean authoritative. Obama is about as real as anyone else in this world. I love when people question the authenticity of others when have not closely examined their own. The question becomes anyone authentic 100%, the answer to that question would be no and for as I have been contact with human beings and including myself, we struggle with inner conflict struggling with being authentic.

As for Reagan, he was an actor thus having communication skills to speak to the American people. I do not know if the man was authentic or not because I simply did not know man other than seeing him on TV. People in this country think being authentic means standing lean and tall like that mythical cowboy of the west. People have been watching too many Randolph Scott and John Wayne movies.

People like to make men like Reagan a kind of supernatural being because they do not like to human failings in the person because would mean looking at their own.

I do support Obama, but I realize he is a man with strengths and weaknesses. He is a human being and he will make mistakes. I am a study of history and learn that is very important to remain objective, and that is not always easy for me. It's a good idea not to turn into god or godess-like status. I also pragmatic, he is going to be President so I do not want to have a beer with him, I just want him to run the country effectively and efficiently.

Instead of seeing Obama as a part of a social progression that he (Jessie) helped to create, he is self-centeredly viewing Obama as a rival who is eclipsing him.

  41. It's because of Ronald Reagan we have so many folks that need to be in a mental institution running around doing what crazy people do. Ronald Reagan was senile while he was in the White House, and what's so scary about that is that they knew it, and kept it a secret. Nancy Reagan was running the White House by being advised by of all things a fortune teller. Whelp, if she is ever in need of a Voodoo priest I can turn her on to one of my cousins on my dad's side in Haiti. Shaking my head.

Ronald Reagan was instrumental in the trickle down economics. The only problem with trickle down economics, it didn't trickle down, it trickled up and made the rich richer and the poor poorer.

As for his acting, well, that horse that played Mr. Ed had better acting qualities than Ronald Reagan did. Oh, and he cheated on his wife Jane Wyman with Nancy Reagan, so Nancy is a homewrecker in my book, and so is Jane Wyman, but in Jane's case what goes around comes around. He cheated on Maureen to be with her. These Republicans kill me with their brand of family values.

  42.
Un-Con...do not own a car... I WALK to work.
Jody:

Do you realize that in debating you guys that I also see your patterns and thus develop means of counteracting your talking points?

YOU DON'T OWN A CAR. IRRELEVANT and yet another point of abstraction.

Let me explain why. You keep focusing on this world ALL ABOUT YOU. As long as it is rationalized in YOUR MIND you can find contentment that YOU ARE INTELLECTUALLY AND MORALLY SUPERIOR.

But wait Jody - YOU DON'T DRIVE A CAR.....but what about the waitress that serves you when you eat lunch or breakfast? If SHE drove a car to work....didn't YOU ultimately receive the benefit of the availability of PETROLEUM to her and thus find her way to work?

What about the tomatoes that you eat in the wintertime? Asumming that you live in a big city - were they "grown locally"? I know that Harpers Magazine attempted to put a good face on the abandoned housing situation in Detroit, pointing to the "urban gardening" that is going on there but the fact is that most of these winter time veggies are SHIPPED IN via a carbon emitting vehicle.

You see Jody what I am getting at is that for you to depart from your INTELLECTUALLY SUPERIOR stoop you need to contrast your life with someone who IS OUTSIDE OF AN INTERCONNECTED SYSTEM that consumes fossil fuels and thus has a standard of living that reflects this. Think Chad, Darfur or Indonesia.

Their lives have no room for INTELLECTUALIZING on this subject. There is no gas station on the corner and no fresh grapes from Chile for them to choose to avoid as a sign of their oneness with their ideology. THE SYSTEM that they live within DOES NOT AFFORD THEM THIS OPPORTUNITY.

Jody - you are a Capitalist Consumer Co-Conspirator.

    Jody - SO AM I!!!

    I am not in denial.

YOU ARE. You have to be in order for your mental abstraction that you live within to continue.

Go back home, call your utility company to disconnect all of your services - live 6 months just as they do in Chad and then come back and debate me.

  43.
If you wanted to be ACCURATE all you'd need to do is to pick up Christopher's line of reasoning and post as such.
ACCURATE?

Christoper - did you see what I told Jody above? Your (supposed) commitment to "accuracy" also portends your ABSTRACT INTELLECTUALISM.

You can "accurately" detail America's oil based foreign policy and how it uses military power to keep the world order as it is in support of open trade routes that are not attacked and thus world commerce comes to a halt. You can even go into the weeds and project constitutional rights upon any detainee of the evil American assault on terrorism.........

but CHRISTOPHER - this ACCURACY in support of your knowledge that YOU HAVE DISCOVERED THE SYSEMTATIC CONSPIRACY to keep oil and other goods flowing into the United States SAYS NOTHING about YOUR personal benefit in living in a society that "steals and kills"....as you have pointed out.

WORSE YET!!! If this society ever STOPPED DOING what you have so "accurately" pointed out it would be YOU who bears the effective degradation of your STANDARD OF LIVING in the process.

Thus again your accuracy is a sign of your ABSTRACT INTELLECUTALISM and is no evidence of your WILLINGNESS to take a preemptive step in protest by refusing to consume the produce that has come from this tree that has been fertilized by blood and ground up bones from others.

In the end Christoper - YOUR BODY is nourished by the same blood that someone else has spilled for your benefit.

  45. Dear Mr. Field,

I left this above in your comments from your past blog:

Off topic: With regards to two days ago, re: 'O'Man, you might consider Greyhound..."
Thank you, Mr. Field, for the "mad props". :) and thank you. Sorry this white chick is such a pain in your arse.

    Gwpriester,
You were right. I was just trying to leave short bites rather than rants.

My apologies to all. Big time. I really mean it. I am sorry, sorry, and then some. I was carried away with the thought of conspiracy at this early stage knowing as much as I do (personal exp. plus business exp.) about aviation).

Look, here's the facts; been there, done that. Grew up in tough "'hoods", as per you're right, Mr. Field, I like 'hoods. Well, I reckon I don't, but that's where I seem to end up. But, then again folks is folks and if you can relate, whatever your background, then, what-the-heck.

Const. Feed: man, you are stoopid, as per usual. Do you even know how to construct a sentence? Take English 101.

I haven't read all of the rants [yet] in these last few days, but when I see (my men: Nsangoma, woozie and Chris, with the pic) roiling, yeah, there's where something is (broiling) that my claws have to come out.

    Boo on you all.

    Ngsangoma,
What the eff? You takin' your meds? What's the message that I don't understand? Dude, you were making a lot of sense, and now? To use email venacular: WTF?

I know, it's that your buddy and Chris' buddy (un) Constructive Feedback, the alternate ego, is back at it again. Sorry, brothers):
