Frat boy you have had three years, do you think you can get it right this time?

As hurricane Gustav churns towards the "boot"; my thoughts, first and foremost, are with my friends, loved ones, and in laws. Those poor folks will be doing everything that they can to ride out this potentially devastating storm. Still, I can't help but think of the irony of the entire situation. (Maybe there is a god) Almost three years to the date after the frat boy and his incompetent administration fucked over the *residents of an entire city, his party has been forced to cut back on their coronation of Mr. Morton and the beauty queen.

Personally, I love it. Not the storm, but the fact that those assholes had to change their plans because of it. They just couldn't have the rest of the A-merry-can people thinking that they are heartless and uncaring, and that they are throwing a major party while the Big Easy takes yet another hit.

And now I hear that the frat boy, and his side kick (Dead Eye Dick) will be skipping the convention to "monitor" the situation. My question to the frat boy would be: why? A-merry-ca already considers you a an incompetent buffoon, and no matter how hard you try, you will never get us to get those images and your handling of Katrina out of our minds. I know you think this is your second chance to get it right, but it's not. You get no second chance, not after the way you fucked up your first one. "Brownie you are doing a heck of a job". Remember those infamous words frat boy? They will go down along with "Mission Accomplished" as words which will define your administration, and your presidency.

Folks, let's be clear, Katrina is what doomed this administration in the eyes of many A-merry-cans. A lot of people could live with the Iraq war, after all, countries do go to war. People like moi might not like it, but there are some folks who think it's necessary, and quite a few people in A-merry-ca were fine with Iraq. But not the handling of Katrina. The republicans were supposed to be the grown up party, the folks who could always be counted on to be competent. The democrats, on the other hand, are the ones with the great ideas, but they can never carry them out. Katrina changed all of that. It showed the rest of the country that republicans were just as incompetent and clueless when it comes to getting things done as the democrats were. It showed us that in spite of all of his rhetoric, the frat boy only cared about hooking up his incompetent ass friends. As a result, many of you started looking at the Iraq war from a totally different perspective. If this man couldn't take care of a crisis in our own back yard, how can we trust him to prosecute a trillion dollar war to influence foreign policy? The frat boy never recovered from Katrina, and even the clowns on FOX were forced to acknowledge that he blew it.

Now, almost three years later, as we count down the days for this human version of Katrina to leave office, we are faced with yet another storm. It's as if god is saying; I am going to give you one more hit frat boy, because you fucked up the first one so bad. And for good measure, I am going to bring it right in the middle of your parties' convention. Let's see all those praying folks pray their way out of this one. I know they were praying for the rain to hit Obama on his big night, but I had some different plans.

Anyway, let's keep the folks on the Gulf Coast in our thoughts. And let's hope that they ride this one out without any loss of life or serious injuries.

As for the folks up in St. Paul; I wish them all a safe trip home.......

*Thanks for the correction Liz :)

I guess now we know whose side God is on. The evangelicals prayed as hard as they could for a rainstorm to hit Denver on the 28th of August, but She had other plans.

Remember, almost 3 years to the day (August 29, 2005) while Katrina was about to slam into New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, Bush was in Arizona for a photo op with, none other than Mr. McCain cutting a birthday cake for Mr. McCain. And after the chummy photo op, George returned to Crawford for a spot more of vacation. No need to worry about Katrina, political appointee and former horse show maven, Heckuva Job Brownie was on the case.

So now McCain and a small entourage of Cindy, his veep, and reporters are converging on the Gulf area along with Mr. Bush and Hurricane Gustav.

And McCain had the audacity to criticize Obama for taking reporters with him when he visited the troops!

  4. Even with everything lined up against the RNC winning in Nov (Bush, Iraq, the economy, oil prices, now their convention had to adjust for Gustav), I still don't see how Obama will win enough Electoral College votes in the south the claim victory. I think this election comes down the Ohio and Penn and the 41 votes between them. In the end will the real question is most of America “pull the lever ” for a black man with a Muslim name?

    Field:

Dick and Frat boy can afford to skip the convention because there were not keynote speakers. In fact, they were speak on Monday when hardly anyone would be watching because of Labor Day. I mean they have to put on a good appearance and make it seem that are doing something in the last few months in office.

I do not know if things will be different and will have to see what happens. I think Dick and Frat will fare a little better but not much. I was listening to the news today and the computer system that was keeping track of the evacuatees crashed meaning the information is lost and they will have to keep track of the people manually. Unbelievable.

    Kevin:

Currently, with the states voting and leaning towards Obama is currently at 260 electoral votes while McCain has 176. There are nine toss up states. Obama is ahead in he polls in PA which as turned blue, and Ohio is leaning towards Obama. The South isn't in play because McCain has those states. It appears according to the map today that the West will determine the election. Colorado and Montana is leaning towards Obama, but it could change. Currently, Obama is even ahead in the polls in Alaska, but will see how the MCain/Palin factor will come into play after the RNC next week. There are 102 electoral votes up for grabs, and 270 is needed to win the election. Which means that it will close race. There are 500,000 unregistered black voters in Georgia, and if you could register them so that they could vote for Obama, you could change the result in that state.

  8. Ultimately New Orleans will sink and there's not much we can about it at this point. The human induced destruction of barrier wetlands and marshes has softened the area up as ocean levels and the Gulf rise.
This warming could raise global sea levels by up to three feet this century and perhaps as much as five feet, which is bad news for costal areas everywhere. So how much more should ourcandidates be talking about the global crisis we all face? Just another science issue that gets short shrift in this campaign.

  9. Filled Negro. In one day I get the opportunity to cut and paste my own words used to challenge the logic and reasoning of another Negro on a similar challenge.

    So Filled Negro:

Can you find ONE SINGLE INITIATIVE that has been introduced ORGANICALLY by the PEOPLE OF NEW ORLEANS to ASSIST in SAVING THEMSELEVES in the event of another storm?

    * Is there a CIVILIAN EVACUATION CORPS where otherwise UNEMPLOYED and UNEMPLOYABLE men and women are asked to COME INTO SERVICE for their OWN COMMUNITIES, learn vital evacuation coordination skills so that none of their OWN PEOPLE might suffer the threat of drowning ever, ever again?

    * Can you find any PROPOSAL which sells these ORGANIC plans to the PEOPLE based on the concept long vocalized by PROGRESSIVES ---- "Money Is Not Everything". The "lives of OUR OWN PEOPLE are worth more than that which the lack of money distributed to us from far, far away should PREVENT US FROM........DOING FOR SELF?"

FILLED NEGRO (I just replaced his name with yours at this point)- STRAIGHT UP SERIOUS MAN. I know that you are not an ignorant brother. You are an educated man and a Black man. Find me ONE IOTA of such a movement that has transpired ANYWHERE in New Orleans from a grass-roots, ORGANIC star and I will shake your hand as a brother with consciousness about himself which flows both ways (in and out).

Are YOU going to be in the crowd that does not fall for the RACIAL GRAVITATIONAL PULL when the usual suspects make the case that BUSH IS TRYING TO PREVENT BLACK FOLKS FROM RETURNING to this "Black City" now that we see that certain parts of this city is DANGEROUS to their plans for living a long life?

(Please do NOT bring WHITE FOLKS who live near national forests that burn down every few years. The POPULATION DENSITY is NOTHING close to that of N.O.)

Where will you stand? Racial pandering or preventing people of little means from returning en masse in harms way?

After the second incident the city leaders and actor-vists representing the BEST INTERESTS OF THE COMMUNITY huddled together to talk about the FUTURE.

    Granny:

Can I ask you a question?
When you tap into your outrage over Katrina and thus are COMPARING IT to some other STANDARD that should have been met with regard the the Federal Government executing a mass resuce in a flood zone, where all first and second line communication systems were destoryed......with everything else being the same you your mind's view......could you detail for us WHAT REFERENCE YOU HAVE as to the "perfect rescue" that causes you such angst?

As I listen to you all. As I watch BOTH the SCIENTIFIC reviews of what happened in Katrina (Watch Nova - another showing is coming up soon) as well as the "Spike Lee propaganda version" of events I am drawn to ask you all - aside from the fact that the storm HAPPENED and that people were suffering and crying - WHAT REFERENCE do you tap as your source of proof that if evil Bush was not in charge......anything would have been substantially different in the outcome?

I have calculated 236,000 hours between Hurricane Betsy and Hurricane Katrina yet some of you find more fault in what was done in the 96 hours between the breach of the levees and the full scale federal rescue operation. (Please note - as you can see from Nova or the Discovery Channel "Violent Earth" episodes there was a continuous "federal rescue effort" from day one. The assembly of the resources to do a COMPREHENSIVE RESCUE by ground transportation with the buses having to come in from regions of the southeast and southwest that were not damaged is where the PERCEIVED delay came from.

Though I agree a FOOD DROP should have been orchestrated on Wednesday or Thursday to the convention center.

So again Granny - what is your reference to PERFECTION or are you simply doing "anger transference"?

Am I satisfied with their ability to create an economic environment which allows the local residents to engage in commerce while the people servicing them are employed?

  28. Where did these black people get all those American flags? I count three in the picture.

What the hell: did they have to remind potential rescuers that they were Americans, too?

I have never owned an American flag that I have bought myself, not even one of the small ones that Don King is so fond of waving to remind people of his patriotism, so that he can K.O. a few court suits before he gets in the ring.

My nephew, who served a tour or two in the Iraqi arena, sent me one of those nice, glass-enclosed ones, neatly folded, or I wouldn't have one now.

Lest you think I'm not patriotic, let me hastily add: I volunteered four years of my life to the military, and was honorably discharged.

I have a thousand reasons not to fly the flag, and have only recently begun to think that maybe I would, if Obama is elected as this nation's next president.

I'm still undecided, and am not sure that I can accept the flag as a running mate for the reminder of my life.

Dr. King stated one dream, the fulfillment of which, will cause me to hoist my flag and hoist it high:

"And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

This is the true American dream.

Not a house with two cars. Not a well-paying job, and a chicken in every pot.

You can have all of that, and still rot in the sun on a overpass in the sweltering New Orleans' muggy heat, after the passing of a destructive storm that was ironically called, Katrina*.

Give me that part of Dr. King's dream, and I'll fly my flag, and fly it proudly.

    *Katrina: (Greek) "pure".

Tuition for the 2008-2009 school year at the independent school, http://www.jburroughs.org in Saint Louis MO, is $19,450 or about $1,620 a month over 12 months. Other charges – for books and field trips – can cost an additional $800-$1000 a year. Twice the annual per student annual cost of the Saint Louis public school system.

It t'would seem that in Saint Louis MO at least, excellent ACT and SAT scores cost $20K per annum.

    NSomnia:

St Louis (which in my research has all but ONE of its 19 member city council being DEMOCRATS. Which has NOT ELECTED AN evil REPUBLICAN city wide since 1970 - kinda like Southwest Philly) is YET ANOTHER example of a FAILED CITY that is ran by PROGRESSIVES.

I presented this research to Aaron X to show that HE is no policy expert and that if his policies were expanded nationally- MORE PEOPLE would be hurt as are the kids in the St Louis School District.

NSomnia - you all have so much that is perverted. CITIES were originally chartered because the formerly UNINCORPORATED land mass had the PEOPLE, the RESOURCES, the BUSINESSES and the POLITICAL LEADERSHIP to the point where upon receiving a CITY CHARTER from the STATE LEGISLATURE they were of the belief that their local resources could better serve the individuals WITHIN than what was the case when the COUNTY or THE STATE were providing these services to them.

In 2008 PROGRESSIVISM has BLOWN THIS CONCEPT TO HELL!!! Now we see that dinosaur cities such as St. Louis, Philadelphia and Chicago are NOT ABLE TO PAY FOR the quality of BASIC SERVICES that their residents need......SO THEY MUST TURN TO AN EXTERNAL SOURCE FOR FUNDING of these BASIC SERVICES.

Thus the original charge that a CITY be able to FUND THE BASICS for it to even become an INDEPENDENT city has been morphed into NATIONALIZED ENTITLEMENTS for even the basics.

In truth NSomnia what we are seeing is that the FAILED ECONOMIC POLICIES that are rampant in these same cities are not able to generate the resources that the large, unyeilding and bloated social services network within these cities need to sustain themselves. These cities are in RECEIVERSHIP. It is only in the crafty mind of the Progressive that these failures have been masked as they demand that the STATE and next the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT provide all of the cash.

The current fight in Chicago is for the funding of 408,000 school children. With a budget of $3.6 BILLION the state ALREADY pays $1.6 BILLION or 44% of the schools tab - because the CITY ITSELF can't pay its own bills. Despite this 44% tally those who are infected with this strain of fundamentalism that affects their thinking are charging the state with a CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATION for FAILING to pay MORE!!!

They are not going to argue the other way - that THE ECONOMIC SYSTEM as assembled in this, the strongest Democratic cities in the nation does not have a system that can care for its own. (See Filled-Negro believes that MY FACTS stated make me a "partisan" rather than a stater of facts. If I some how blamed the Republicans for this failure I would be a good guy. Exempt there are so few of them around in Chicago to blame)

    Field,

I was associated with Emergency Response within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Our job was to provide guidance and essentials in the event of a catastrophic excursion. That's what the bigger government entities do, take over when the locals are overwhelmed.

To the putz that has the fantasy of self-sufficiency...you are about 10,000 years too late. Incestual tribe-families may have been totally on their own...but they died from nearly every downtick in their immediate environment. We band together to obtain benefits. Otherwise every person would dream of McMansions and underpaid Messicans. And women that were subservient or dead.

It wasn't just Brown. Yeah, he was over his head and a nepotistic choice...but he told you-all the truth. Chertoff, Secretary of Photo-Ops, did even less. Field, speak to some of the Philly ER crew and they'll opine that Chertoff is worse...he still has his job.

Do it by yourself. Feh! I'd love to see libertarian Cheetoh eaters deal with the meltdown of the Royerford Nuke. Or the shutdown of the Schuykill Filtration Plant. Or a complete and utter blockage of the 'SureKill Expressway'.

Jacknapes think that because they can operate a generator from BigLots that they can do ER planning. Sorry low-informations, it takes more than a Skeletor costume. You actually have to do the actual work.

Though you did avoid my question as I attempted to get you to articulate your line of reasoning in which you think of one of the largest storms ever to hit the Gulf Coast and yet you can only get mad at evil George Bush - I will respect the possibility that part of the irrationality that you suffer is because of the pain that you saw and thus you are experiencing "mental transferrence" as a coping mechanism.

The fact remains Granny - the people of New Orleans are ultimately going to be saved by realizing that:

    1) They are now in grave danger as they are stationed close to 3 major bodies of water with only cement and dirt protecting them as they are in houses that are below sea level

    2) if they choose to stay they need to focus on developing a CIVILIAN RESCUE SERVICE where each resident is charged with teaming up with a "buddy" and insuring that they cooperate to evacuate during an approaching storm.

3)The building codes for their city needs to not only focus on the "green materials" that Angelina Jolie and her husband are pushing but that they consider the hardened cement structures that Jamiaca and Cuba have been forced to go through after years of being battered.

Granny - I strongly suspect that in 3 or 4 more years from now - we will be glued to the tv sets yet again watching a storm cut through the beloved region.

There will be a NEW PRESIDENT, Granny, but the SAME OLE SAME will be the outcome. WHO will you be blaming then Granny?

It seems that the "shame on you (Bush) " and then "shame on ME next time" needs to be applied by you and others before a REAL fix can be found to remove these people from harms way.

From my second-hand point of view in working with various "first responders" - (hospitals, police, federal, etc) I can tell you - ALL OF THE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS IN NEW ORLEANS WERE WASHED AWAY. No telephone, no police radio, no cellphones, NOTHING!!

When you are in a situation when all of the first line comms and the second line systems are destroyed - all bets are off with having a detailed and coordinated rescue until some makeshift system is restored. (Portable transmission towers with generator backup, etc).

As I listen to you all rant about the "Failure" of the Katrina rescue and then reference the LOGISTICAL details about the challeges about a flooded, wind-damaged city where major roads and bridges are destroyed - the differences in the CREDIBILITY of the two versions are immense.

I did not say "self-sufficient" in the sense that everyone is going to "save themselves". I said have the people ORGANIZED in advance of the threat so that they are following a prescribed path rather than being without a plan and thus being one of more than 20,000 people in need of rescue.

It is the local, federal, and state agencies job to have an evacuation and disaster plan. Of course, as I am individual I need to be inform of what the plans are, and it's their responsibility to give that information to the public. The agencies will need to design the exit routes, the national guard, local police, and state troopers to control the flow of traffic. The agencies will handle the logistics of the evacuation. In addition, people who are in hospitals and nursing homes will have way out of the city, and the local government will have to use their resources to ensure that people arrive at a safe place away from the disaster. Of course, you want to provide transportation for those individuals who do not have cars. Damn, are you that selfish that you do not care about anyone else but yourself. You have a level of disconnection that seems to resonate with me that you are incapable of empathize with other people.

I do not expect the government to pay my bills, but I expect public safety including the fire department and police department, ensure that the water I drink is safe. So, I have write the letter to my local government agency about possible problems with the water, I expect them to investigate. It's the reason why I pay taxes. You want the benefits of the government, but not pay for anything. I find individuals like you always looking for something for nothing. You do not want to your money or time to help, but constantly complaining about everything and this feeling that do you do not vote either.

Perhaps, you did not listen to Obama's speech the other night, but there are some things we do for ourselves. I think one of the important jobs we can do is keep ourselves inform. There is nothing like a well-inform nation so we are able to the government to task. We seem to forget that we are government. We vote politicians to represent us, and take them to task. However, not enough of us write letters to our representatives. I have do more that just vote, but really be involved in the process. If do not like the job my Congressperson, Senator, or Mayor is doing, then I have the power to vote him or her out of office.
We need to build a culture of preparedness. We need to assure that every kid who goes to school in America knows how to swim. The number of EMS teams and ambulances is not tracking with the growth in population. We need to teach more of our people first aid.

The federal government ought to be there to back the states up, we need to build a culture of preparedness in each. Why are we sending people there to issue them ice and water? We should be empowering people to act locally. The key to hurricane preparation is family preparation. If families are prepared, we lose fewer lives.

Government has to set standards for institutions like nursing homes and hospitals and for homes where people with mental or physical disabilities are kept. They should be evacuated well before the general population. We have to decide how close we should have those types of institutions to the coastline and to areas that will probably be flooded. That part of the population is just too vulnerable.

We need to create a national preparedness plan, with a local civil defense corps. We need dual trained teachers who can be disaster responders. We need to equip each high schools with satellite communications.
Could you write a message to them so I can print it out and show them that IN YOUR VIEW - the storm that they are facing is but a bit of "rain" - no big deal that Michael Moore used a prayer event by misdirected so-called 'Christians' for a rain event never happened versus the "sprinkling" that caused them to lose their home.

(I will report on this later but - One lady told me that despite being away from her home and her job for at least 1 week while the storm passes....she must return back and pay all of her utility bills because they will be waiting there for her.)

    Sarah Palin:
Not on your life. If it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me and I’ll fight in defense of our Pledge of Allegiance

First, the Pledge of Allegiance was not written by the Founding Fathers. It was written much later. Secondly, the words "under God" were not originally part of the Pledge. "Under God" was added even later.[Flag Day (June 14, 1954)]

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy (1855-1931), a Baptist minister, a Christian Socialist, and the cousin of Socialist Utopian novelist Edward Bellamy ( 1850-1898 )

Ernesto - before "I bite" lets set up the TERMS of your question because they are quite arbitrary.

You say "take care of its people in a hurricane". What EXACTLY does this mean so that we can make a VALID comparison. (I realize how important the arbitrary, unstructured arguments are for Filled-Negros because it insures that "the good guys" continue to look good and the bad guys will always fall short of the changing threshold that they can never seem to live up to)

    1) Cuba (and Jamaica and Miami), unlike New Orleans have building codes that have them using cement building materials due to the ravenous effects of past storms. I hope that N.O. adopts more hardened building codes. The "green" houses that Brad Pitt and Angelena Jolie were planning sure were not cement.

Here are pictures from Cuba by the way:

    http://www.nancarrow-webdesk.com/warehouse/storage2/2007-w44/img.57150_t.jpg

Seems like they have flooding. Its unavoidable.

    2) How do you compare the situation where an ENTIRE CITY FLOODS and there were 25,000 people stranded in a city that RETAINS WATER like a BOWL versus let say Havana which is on an island and, once again, who gets hit by at least 3 storms every year so they have adapted?

Your claim "take care of its people" means nothing unless you define the terms of your comparison.

    Neo-Constructive:

I mean Cuba has spent the resources to build and effective means of evacuating their people to safe shelter during hurricanes. That is the government's job. To provide "homeland security" as it were. This country talks about it, but won't actually do it. We're too busy trying to secure an occupied country halfway across the friggen' globe.

The Netherlands has a large area of coastal land below sea level. They don't get hurricanes, but they do get north atlantic storms that are almost as fierce. They have spent the resources to build a massive network of dikes that protect that land. You're telling me the USA doesn't have the ingenuity, technology or ability of Cuba or the Netherlands?

Your tack seems to be the typical blame the victims mentality that wingnuts cling to like a security blanket when their belief in laissez-faire capitalism is questioned.

  66. ".. but here goes: How can you and I constructively direct our disappointment and rage after the November election?..."

Become more active in your community. Register people to vote. Work with your local political party (dem or repub)to get people to the polls when voting day comes around. Write letters to the editor, call radio stations. Have meetings with your neighbors, start organizations. (I have done legal work for two such start up organizations here in Philly this past year alone) And stay engaged. Read blogs (hell start your own) and anything else that you can get your hands on.

If you go to church, make sure that the church you belong to is engaged in the community. If you are Greek, or belong to any type of organization, make sure that your chapter is engaged politically as well.

Just a few suggestions, but there is so much more that we can do.

If you have anything that you want to pass on to me, shoot me an e-mail, and I will be glad to try and get it out there. Folks with blogs can help too.

And finally, If we have to take to the streets, (peacefully of course) we do that too.

  68. Despite the 12 hour-drive to get only 250 miles out of New Orleans, the painful memories associated with the same drive three years ago, and the very real possibility of having no home and no job to return to, I still have a last nerve, which the GOP and mainstream media have managed to get all over. I've watched every Republican from the state governor to the president pat themselves on the back all day simply because the storm did not make landfall at quite a high enough intensity to breach the levees and because they have gotten enough of a clue not to have a party while a state is threatened with catastrophe. Mainstream media has allowed them to get away with that and has perpetuated the notion that "progress" is what saved us. No. The weakening of the storm did.

A barge, moored YESTERDAY near the same industrial canal that was breached by a unmoored barge three years ago, came loose today and happened not to have breached the same flood wall again. Is that really progress?

During Katrina, mainstream media got honest for about a week. During Gustav, they've not been honest at all.

I can move away from New Orleans to avoid hurricanes, but I'll also need to stay away from the entire Gulf Coast as well as much of the East Coast for the same reason. I shouldn't move back to New York because of the relative ease with which the subway system could be attacked. I'd also need to say away from any earthquake prone regions on the West Coast, as well as any of Heartland, which sees devastating tornadoes regularly these days. I think at this point the best bet is Holland, where they got their floodwalls right the first time.

Grannystanding: I am so, so sorry to hear about your Katrina-related heartache.

It's an excellent project for city government to get going - that is the kind of thing they're there for in my view. And there need to be more projects along those lines. Ray Nagin, I am looking at you.

As for those who insist on calling "idiots" the people who could not or did not evacuate for Katrina:

    1. Look, folks, this is Louisiana, there are a lot of storms, I am sitting here waiting right now for Ike to come in. I had planned to evacuate for Ike but then they said it wasn't coming at all, and now it is coming but it is too late to go. These things happen. You can't bat 1000.

    2. Would you really call New Orleanians who did not evacuate for Katrina "idiots" if you did not know they were Black and poor and were therefore easy targets for this kind of speech? Frankly I doubt it.

    3. Since you obviously never place yourself in any kind of danger, I suppose that if I ever see you on the highway bleeding I should not stop to help. You are INTELLIGENT so nothing will ever happen to you
