You won't find these shoes at Wal-Mart

I have a confession to make: I am somewhat of a clothes pony---not a horse, I don't have that type of loot---During the week I like to rock some nice suits, and every now and then I will throw on my Alexander McQueen or my Hugo Boss suit, just because. So I am not going to kill Mr. Morton because I read about his $520 loafers while visiting one of my favorite blogs, "Crooks & Liars". Hey, the man's wife is filthy rich, and if he can afford to rock $520 Ferragamo loafers, god bless him.

But here is the thing: You can't go around ripping the other guy for being elitist and out of touch when you rock $520 loafers. You just can't. I wonder how many pairs of shoes the "O" man has the costs $520? I am guessing none. I am quite sure that Mr. Morton, on the hand, has quite a few of those bad boys. Hey when you have more homes than the Philadelphia Housing Authority, and you can afford to fly in your own private jet, and pay for your fuel with a Black Centurion Amex Card, you are doing alright. That everyman speech that Mr. Morton likes to give just isn't going to cut it no matter how authentic he wants you to think he is. But this is one of the true ironies of this campaign season. The man who really pulled himself up from his humble beginnings is being painted and elitist by the man who can afford to wear $520 loafers. The same man who voted against raising the minimum wage. Only in A-merry-ca.

Which leads me to something else I wanted talk about: (Thanks Jody and Crooks & Liars) Wal-Mart. Every time I see that big blue sign with the star in the middle I am reminded of a joke I heard somewhere. "If you don't think that god has a sense of humor go to your nearest Wal-Mart store." I bet there are no $520 loafers being sold there. Now it seems that the people who run America's favorite discount store are asking their employees to vote republican. Why? Because those nasty democrats will want unions that's why. (Like that's supposed to be a bad thing) Yeah, let me see now; I work at Wal-Mart busting my ass for $7 an hour, and I am going to vote against the democrats because they might allow unions to come into my work place and possibly get me $10 an hour. Nice.

Anyway, in the spirit of true disclosure, I too have been in the house that Sam built a time or two. And Mrs. Field, a self confessed country girl. ---That means there are Wal-Mart's within a stone's throw of her hometown---loves to bring the occasional merchandise from Sam's place into the field household. But no more, I will resist the urge to buy their cheap goods with everything I have. They have already destroyed Main street A-merry-ca by driving all the Mom and Pop stores out of business, and now they want to tell their workers how to vote? I don't think so.

Sam Walton and everything he stands for can kiss my ass. And so can Mr. Morton's phony ass with his $520 loafers.

  1. i heard about this and am astounded that this company can do that... how can a company 'recommend' that it's employees vote a certain way?
    is it legal?
how was the recommendation received by it's workers?
what next.. wal-mart managers march the workers to the ballot?

  2. Wal-Mart fired all their butchers soon after starting their Grocery business because they wanted to organize. So now all the meat is cut 200 miles away and just ain't worth eating. Looks pretty on the shelf though. To be fair, all of the retailers are terrified of unions.

  3. I can't tell you when is the last time I've ever been in a Walmart. However, I do go to Target, every once in while, because whatever I spend there, they take part of it and donate it to the school of my choice. Therefore, I try to buy something from them, and Target does give you a record of how much of your individual money has been donated so far. Hey, I have probably contributed more money to education than Bush and Arnold have. (wink)

I hope that Target is not treating it's employees like that, because the school I donate my money to really needs all the help they can get. The building is in so bad a shape, until the floors are warped and lopsided, and you can actually see huge gaping holes the size of a clock that let you see straight through the building inside out. I won't even tell you what the bathrooms look like you might puke up your dinner. Yeah, and they're still reading out books that someone else twenty years older then they are had before them.

I want to share my conspiracy theory...
Back during one of the dempcratic debates, Obama made the crack about working on the South Side of Chicago while Hilary was on the Wal-Mart board. Couple of days later, the big Rev. Wright story broke (about a remark made 6 years earlier)
Anyway, one of Rev. Wright's big crusades is against Wal-Mart. He was very vocal during the Chicago vote to make big box stores pay their employees a living wage (which cost the city a Wal-Mart close to pretty, educated white people) He has also called on the congregation for the last couple of years to boycott Wal-Mart/Sam's Club. I've always thought Wal-Mart has been trying to sabotage Obama because of the views he shares (I assume) regarding their practices. This latest development is of no surprise to me. I'm only surprised that it leaked.

I'm blackballed (no pun intended) by one of my former employers because I allegedly helped try to form a union when all I did was protect those who were forming one.

Employers will fire your ass if they find out you're starting a union. Organized labor scares corporations that will fuck over their employees for financial gain.

  6. Mark my word what Arnold did to California State Employees is just a trial run, I believe it's gonna have a domino effect. Working for $6.55 cents an hour is minimum wages, welfare with benefits.

The State employees have a union. They were walking off their jobs when Arnold signed that executive order. They had to close many of the DMV offices that day.

I don't blame them, because some of those people probably commute, pay mortgages, rent, car notes, child care, etc., it is going to cause some hardships for a lot of people. Rent in California is extremely high. Yet, he didn't cut his salary or those in supervisory positions salary.

The thing is none of these businesses that offer consumer products, or utility companies, or cable companies, or telephone companies are lowering their prices, instead they are raising them. In essence, what they are doing is squeezing the blood out of a turnip.

I really think that a proposal should be written up and put on the ballot for taxpayers to vote on concerning the salaries of our government officials. In the proposal should be a stipulation that government official have no control over their own raises, and it should be left up to the taxpayers and it would have to be voted on before they could get a raise.

In addition, I think that it should be left up to the taxpayers on how much our government officials should be paid as well as if their pay should be cut for lack of taxpayer's satisfaction.

Anybody voting for another Republican for President or Governor are out of their minds, they are insane. Because what they care about the people would make a preacher cuss.

Do the elite eat arugula, or do the the elite wear $520 Italian kicks; do the elite do either, both, or neither?

When one looks up the word elite, it says see the word elect. When one looks up the word elect, it says see the word elite; hmmm.

[Origin: 1250–1300; ME < L éléctus chosen (ptp. of éligere), equiv. to é- e- + leg- choose + -tus ptp. suffix; see elite]
    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/elect

[French élite, from Old French eslite, from feminine past participle of eslire, to choose, from Latin ēligere; see elect.]
    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/elite

Same Latin root, éligere, or is it ēligere. Any elite or rather elect Englishians out there?

Elite, unlike the word entrepreneur (the French have no word for entrepreneur; What? Who said that?) is a French word, and as good Americans we should not use French words.

  8. "i heard about this and am astounded that this company can do that... how can a company 'recommend' that it's employees vote a certain way?
    is it legal?"

According to the WSJ article "Federal election rules permit companies to advocate for specific political candidates to its executives, stockholders and salaried managers, but not to hourly employees. While store managers are on salary, department supervisors are hourly workers."

So Wal-Mart is allowed to advocate for McCain to executives and managers. Wal-Mart is allowed to tell any of its other slaves (er.. EMPLOYEES) what it thinks the effects of certain policies will be.

As long as no Wal-Mart manager says the magic words "We want you to vote for McCain and tell everyone else to do the same" the company is probably within the law.

  10. I got to say though, when the Old Coot sports his $500 Ferragamo loafers bought for him by the "C" word, and climbs onto the "C" word's Cessna Citation to fly off to one of their 9 homes, and then says something like:

"My friends, Sen. Obama talks way too good and eats way too healthy and he doesn't understand Sen. Clinton's hardworking, white people the way I understand them."

I realize the Old Coot is just another, slippery GOP hypocrite blathering fuckery.

I'm onto your ass, Old Coot. I'm onto ya' and I plan to ride you all the way to November, so don't front when Barack Obama defeats you in a landslide in the General Election.

Now on a personal note, since the "C" word is worth $100 million, can't she buy the Old Coot some dentures that don't slip each time he says a word containing "sh?"

Walmart is scared that the next administration will actually enforce the law, rather than run an 'affirmative action' program for hillcretins, neocons, religio-crazies, and KKKristians.

What Walmart is doing is illegal. But you need AGs that know the law and will take the company to court. Monica Goodling's hires are faith-based homeskooled whitey whites that wouldn't dream of messing up a perfectly nice corporation when there are churches that need relief from the discrimination of zoning laws.

John McCain, son and grandbaby of Navy admirals, has been a legacy from the day of his birth. For those not having served, he was born with a very silver spoon. Only blatant incompetence could keep him from flag rank. Add to this the sugarwench and he has been insulated from life...except for the time he was a guest of the Vietnamese.

A French sociologist once wrote that the Great Depression was created by the wealthy elites of the US, and the world, to depress wages. Some of our business leaders actually said it was good that the incomes of millions were tanking as it was a necessary market correction for the relative comfort experienced during the 1920s. This may have been rational to the rich, as the 20s brought prosperity to many that were not born to the purple. But, as FDR and his advisors realized, the number of unemployed was far greater than the official census. Both of my sets of grands were never tallied. Blacks and other minorities were also excluded from the lists. The French sociologist estimated that nearly 75% of the country was unemployed. This level of hardship may gladden Cheney/Bush/McCain but it also could lead to a socialist society. If you are not eating, you'll pick the philosophy that offers you meals.

Crashing the US wage scale makes business happy as all the other businesses are paying the wages that allow fictional consumers to purchase my goods and services. And we must recall that Bush/Cheney/neocons/homeskoolers/diploma mill grads/business leaders have all found the favela system to be righteous and desirable.

Walmart has long had a policy where it shows its workers how to use the welfare system to get health care, housing etc etc because obviously it does not pay a livable wage.

Also its very interesting that you think the Democrats support unions and Obama will work on behalf of labor.

Here's the deal. We have had a Democratic Congress for the past few years and they gave Bush everything he has asked for.

Furthermore your boy Obama is owned lock stock and barrel by the same pacs, lobbies and AIPAC that contribute to both campaigns. If he didn't toe their line then he would be treated as Kucinich was or as Ralph Nader is.

Hillary was on the WalMart board, Billary gave us NAFTA and GATT when Bush the First couldn't get it passed and Mr Bill also gave us a new Welfare bill that cut a lot of black Mothers off and forced them to work at McDonalds.

so get your heads out of the clouds because the Democratic party is no longer the party of the Big Tent.

So how dumb is it to think Obama is going to champion ordinary people.

When someone such as Jimmy Carter becomes POTUS he is resented by the ruling elites and the corporate media because most presidents come from the ruling families who mostly graduate from Yale or Harvard. Even if they are brain dead like George.

Rahm Emanuel is the Democrat who chooses party nominees. He was born in Israel and served in its military and now he is a King Maker in the United States government. His Father was an Israeli terrorist who was in the Irgun.

Obama is the real field Negro. The people who run the country are Jews.

The fix is already in or Democrats would never have risked having a black as the nominee since they are presumably desperate to win the White House.

In the last election the democratic moneybags gave Al Gore the boot and forced John Kerry off on us so that whether a Liberal or a Neocon got into the White House our middle east policies would be the same.

Obama would have gotten the boot long ago if he asserted his own agenda. Rank and file Democrats wanted Gore and millions marched against holocaust but it didn't matter.

Consider also that the Clintons had positioned themselves to win the black vote.

The only way the elites could keep them out of the White House would be to run a black man.

The smartest people know that they are manipulated. Others think Obama had to work twice as hard as white people and he earned the nomination. He earned it in the same way an actress wins a great role by sleeping with producers.

Here's a news alert for Field Negro's posters. Today we have a neo liberal economic policy and the government no longer works on behalf of the people. I thought I would tell you so you don't go another generation thinking you are still in the 20th century.

$500 is not a lot to pay for Italian shoes or any other shoes. How much do you think you pay for mass produced shoes at fine department stores. You're revealing some things about yourself.

When campaigns bait people by trying to make a candidate look like an ordinary person when actually he is a rich elite that is a reflection of the people they are trying to bait.

Clearly what matters is that the candidate is usually an intellectual elite and all that that implies about ordinary people.

Whats the difference between lowbrow Walmart workers who can be seduced into voting Republican against their own economic interests and blacks who can be seduced into voting for a black against common sense and their own economic interests since the black man is the puppet of Jews, monied elites and corporations? Please explain. Do you actually think Obama is just a man of the people. If I were you I wouldn't look down my nose at WalMart workers.

Costco is the anti-WalMart. They pay decent wages, and treat their workers better. I also believe they contribute more to liberal candidates. If you have a choice between WalMart or Sam's Club and Costco, pick Costco.

  17. @anon 8:05.... who said anyone was looking down their noses at WalMart workers?..... My engagement with WalMart workers has been through my Union, where we joined with WalMart workers to demand health care for their employees.... In fact, a major point of this post, in my opinion, is how the mega rich corporate heads are trying to preassure the working class to vote against their interests... and you need to get a little education on labor support in this country. DOWN THE LINE, Democrats have supported, co-sponsored and voted for Labor Issues..... from protecting the right to organize, to fighting for raising the mimimum wage... just about every Labor Law was introduced by a Democrat and has had overwhelming support from Democrats.
I agree that during the 90s the Democrats fucked up on labor issues... but, Unions have been working hard to push back on the so called "free trade" initiatives and time has shown that NAFTA did not do all it said it would. Now those leading in Congress for Fair Trade initiatives are.... Democrats.
Another fun fact for you.... it takes BOTH Houses in Congress to get things passed. The House of Reps have introduced all kinds of bills and the Senate is where they have died. That is because Democrats still do not have a 60% veto-proof majority.

  18. Why does John McCain hate Black people?

At a campaign stop in Panama City, FL on Friday, Tallahassee Democrat senior writer Stephen Price was singled out and asked to leave a media area at a rally for presidential candidate John McCain.

Price was among at least three other reporters, and the only black reporter, surrounding McCain's campaign bus when a member of the Arizona senator's security detail asked the reporter to identify himself. Price had shown his media credentials to enter the area.

Price showed his employee identification as well as his credentials for the Friday event.

"I explained I was with the state press, but the Secret Service man said that didn't matter and that I would have to go," Price said. When another reporter asked why Price was being removed, she too was led out of the area.

Tallahassee Democrat Executive Editor Bob Gabordi said the incident was unwarranted.

"We're deeply concerned and disturbed that our reporter — of all of those in that area — was asked to move," Gabordi said. "My understanding is that Stephen was the only reporter approached and asked to leave the area, and the only reporter in that area who is black. Another reporter who stood up for Stephen was then asked to leave."

anti semitic crap? This entire blog is about black interests. It is all about whining about white racism against blacks. Every other statement is an attack upon white people. Are you sure you are the one to lecture me about anti semitism.

Anti semitism is about hatred of Jews but what is the word for Jewish hatred of white people since they have done everything they can to destroy us. They worked in the civil rights movement not because they care about blacks any more than they care about Palestinians but just so they could weaken white power and take over the government.

If a white person had a blog about white interests they would be labeled racist. The fact is there is no difference between David Duke, Jesse Jackson and Alan Dershowitz since all champion the interests of those of their own ethnic group. White people have to fore go seeking our own interests on behalf of diversity in order to give others advantages in an artificial way because they have no natural advantages. Therefore Duke must be stereotyped and marginlized.

REgarding jews in our government, Walt and Mearsheimer have written books about the power and control that jews have over the United States government. Jimmy Carter has written a book about their control. I guess you missed them.

We will probably bomb Iran before Bush leaves the White House because now that we have destroyed Iraq it is only Iran that prevents Israel from being the dominate nation in the Middle East.

Neoconservatism is a Jewish intellectual movement. Most of the neocons are Jews. Leo Struss is the neocon philospher and he wrote that jews must discredit the white Anglo Saxon Protestant ruling elites in order to remove them and take their places. Would you call that racist Mr gwpriester. Or is it only racist when white people do it.

    Read about strauss http://www.nhinet.org/ryn18-1.htm

Furthermore there are demands to get Christians out of our own government but when does anyone suggest getting jews out of government because of a separation of church and state? What does that mean about jewish control of government and media. How is stating the facts anti-semitism?

Jews are doing just what Stauss said they should do and they are attempting to discredit the culture, heritage and religion of WASPs and it began right after they came here after WW2. Irving Berlin wrote White Christmas right after our Christian Fathers and Grandfathers saved them from the Nazis. Today jews boast in America's most important newspapers about what they have done to Christians.

    articleId=10775

There is this astonishing suspending of disbelief when it comes to race in America. Blacks, Jews and everyone else are free to say whatever you choose. You are free to have organizations and institutions dedicated to your ethnic interests. Yet if white people do these things you label us racist. We are not allowed to pursue our own interests because if we did then you wouldn't be here.

White people have given up our freedoms in order to accomodate diversity in America.

Our forefathers gave us a system in which we are all free to put forward ideas and then those ideas and opinions are subjected to public examination and scrutiny and everyone debates them and in that way an idea can rise to popular consensus or it can be debunked.

White people are not allowed to exercise that priviledge because we must pretend that minorities are equal with white people.

Now - I am not saying that other races do not have the same value and human rights and worth or that a black life is not as valuable as whites. I am just saying that other races such as blacks are not equal to whites in intellect and that their culture is different. Whites must accomodate black culture because you refuse to assimilate which is also an assault upon our system.

An example of how we must give up our freedoms is the recent report about 50% of aids victims being black. The black anchor on CNN who is as shallow and silly as the giggling women they have on there, interviewed a black woman who has aids. The black woman stated right off that the fact that blacks make up 50% of aids victims has nothing to do with black culture. She made a statement that was never allowed to be debated. It was merely elevated to the status of public dogma which will then be translated into public policy without any debate. Anyone who dares challenge that statement will be labeled as racist. That is not how our system is supposed to work. Blacks are elevated to a status they never earned.

The fact that 50% of black people make up aids victims in America is most certainly a reflection of black values and culture just the same as that can be said about the gay community.

Then the black woman stated that the reason blacks have aids is because black men go to prision (ughhh) and then come home and spread the disease. What! Going to prison and that is the reason aids is spread in the black community is not a reflection of black culture and the CHOICES they make!

Then the black woman went on to say that the Gay community took charge of their dilemma, in other words they took responsibility, accountability and they did something about their own problems. They CHANGED THEIR HABITS. They stopped going to bath houses and to the park after dark.

But the black women stated that the black community was asking for the government to give them money to fight aids. They are not about to be accountable or change their habits and it is up to the government and white tax payers to fight their problems for them just as we are doing in Africa.

This is a situation that white people should have a right to debate but we don't get to. You should think about what we sacrifice everyday in order that blacks can navigate white society and our country can be diverse. Given what we have to put up with I don't see how anybody has the nerve to call us racist. You should listen to yourselves sometimes and see yourselves as we see you.

Now I will be labeled racist and lose my free speech.

Maybe white people don't want to wait another ten generations for you to overcome experiences you never had in the first place. Maybe we don't want to sacrifice any more.

You can say that I am racist for my comments. Actually I am only pursuing white interests in the same way that you are here in the pursuit of black interests.

In my experience it is always about race, it only becomes a bad thing when white people do it.

The entire thrust of this blog is about how blacks are oppressed. Well someone has to be doing the oppressing. Is it not racist to continually attack white people the way you do? Maybe we get sick of it and sick of you. What right do you have to make demands. Its not our place to have to take care of you or to accomodate you. We shouldn't have to lose our free speech because of you. We have a right to our opinions.

The very fact that you whine all the time is evidence of inferiority. The very fact that you say America has a long way to go so that you can overcome is evidence of your inferiority. You are saying that unless white people do certain things you can't overcome. If you could have you would have.

The Jews, according to the CIA World Factbook make up 1.7% of the American population and they run the government. They were discriminated against and kept out of white Country Clubs etc so they never got a free pass. We still don't want them running the government but they do. They quickly became the richest segment of the population because we created a place where they could be safe and yet we are labeled anti-semetic if we oppose what they do in our government.

They were responsible for America changing our immigration laws so that we get immigrants from places other than Western Europe so they wouldn't stand out as a minority. Remember the problems Kennedy had because he was Catholic, imagine the problems a jew would have had.

today our Christian children are spilling their blood and we are being bankrupted on behalf of a JEWISH STATE. For white countries, diversity good, for jew country, diversity bad. whats the difference between a Jewish nation and an Aryan nation? Today our government supports an ethinc and relgious state even tho that goes against our Constitution.

For jews to demand diversity in order that they could pursue their own interests at the expense of the general welfare is anti american. That is what diversity is - seeking your own interests at the expense of the general welfare. Our country, culture and heritage are destroyed. We must sacrifice everything for diversity.

So there are no excuses for the plight of blacks. You enjoy a high standard of living not because you earned it but because you live in a white country.

today South Africa doesn't have health care and it has to be provided by Cubans. You can't even run a nation when it is built and handed to you.

In the past few weeks every human rights organization in the world has rebuked South Africa. It seems they are turning away other African refugees from famine and civil war because they belong to different tribes. Gee I thought they got rid of racist government in South Africa.

If black Americans assimilated and worked with white people and had a nice attitude and didn't have a chip on your shoulders than I don't think there would be problems. but to have an aggressive attitude and to make demands is not acceptable. Everything bad that happens to you is not white people's fault and its not white people's responsibility. And you should remember that white people have rights too. Its only because of white self imposed censorship that you can live in your dream world.

Christopher look at it this way, Obama is the black's candidate and McCain is the white's candidate.

Diversity is about each group seeking its own interests at the expense of the general welfare and whites have as much right to pursue their interests as blacks, jews or anyone else.

Wal-Mart is a nasty place, I try to avoid it all costs, those low prices come at a cost, which means low wages to the folks that work there. So good for you for trying to stop suppporting them.

As for McGramps,I agree that a man with $500+ kicks is really in no position to call anyone elite. I mean seriously, think about how many folks in this country who work and make way less weekly than what this guy spends on a pair of shoes. Come on now, he needs to stop with the elite, I'm a regular guy spiel. True regular joes shop at places like Payless Shoes where you pray you don't get corns on your dogs from the shoes.

    Field:

I do co-sign with your sentiment of Wal-Mart, the kiss my ass part really gives it great significance. I do not know if anyone read the book by Barbara Ehreneich entitled "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America," but went undercover to work at various low-wage jobs to investigate the impact of the 1996 welfare reform on the working poor. Her final destination was Minneapolis, Minnesota where she was employed in the women's department at a Wal-Mart. She worked for $8.00 an hour without any healthcare insurance. She discovered that even she had a car, no dependents, and initial funds, she failed to achieve a sustainable lifestyle. Her investigation took place between spring 1998 and summer 2000. Noticed that it's eight years and Wal-Mart still starts out its employees with $7 or $8 an hour.

I am not surprised by Wal-Mart tactics, but it would change significantly if their customers decided not to purchase any items from that store when they discovered that they encourage their employees to applied for welfare benefits such as food stamps, housing vouchers, etc. It behooves Wal-Mart for state governments to continue their welfare programs because they do not want to pay for health benefits. They do not pay their employees a livable wage. Ironically, people complained about Starbucks and it costs $5.00 for grande mocha latte, but the company pays more in health benefits for their employees than coffee and started their employees with a wage of $9 to $10 an hour. Personally, I did not mind going to Starbucks because at least knew that they did value the employees, and the service is fine. I have more respect for Starbucks than Wal-Mart, but it tell us something about rising medical costs.

On McCain, this the case of the pot calling the kettle black, please pardon the pun as I do not want anyone getting on my case. It is not a good idea to call someone else an elitist when you are wearing $500 or $600 pair of shoes.

Anon, I do not know what reality you are living, but paying over $500.00 is a lot of money for most people to buy a pair of shoes. Most men do not pay that kind of money for shoes unless they have really big feet and have them custom made. I brought two pairs of glasses for a little over $500.00 and I justified that because I needed them. Perhaps it's not a lot of money for McCain because his wife is worth upward to $300 million, and it's relative. My father is dresses well does not spend $500 on shoes particularly when you can buy them on sale. However, McCain cannot say that Obama is an elitist because he is one himself.

blackgirlinmaine says Wal-Mart is a nasty place, I try to avoid it all costs, those low prices come at a cost, which means low wages to the folks that work there. So good for you for trying to stop suppporting them.

Are you for real? Its hard to tell if people are being sarcastic or not, especially Christopher.

blackgirlinmaine (are there really black people in Maine and NH) its called Globalism. If we had only to boycott WalMart to solve the problem then I would boycott it too.

The problem is that Dear Obama and McCain support Globalism. Neoliberal economic policy. Maybe if I repeat it several times it will sink in. Neoliberal economics.

Read economyincrisis.org in order to see what is happening to America.

  25. Field: I know you have a pair of Jordans, even I do.

Wal-Mart vs Unions. Well your from Philly and I'm from Buffalo were we have two major supermarkets: Wegmans vs Tops (Subsidiary of Morgan Stanley). Now here is the asinine part. Why I mentioned two supermarkets because basically the Wal-mart worker vs Wegmans and Tops are going to start around at the same wages basically job description. Now here is the kicker: Tops employees are "unionized" vs Wegmans are not however Wegmans is consistently ranked highest in employee happiness, best places to work for. (In 2008 and 2007 Fortune ranked Wegmans the third best company to work for in the United States. Wegmans has appeared on Fortune’s annual "100 Best Companies to Work For" list since its inception in 1998, and has ranked among the top 10 for six consecutive years.[2] Food Network recognized it with its award for Best Grocery Store in 2007).

Now think very hard about Wal-Mart and ask yourself: what would a union really do. Unions of this nature is close to excessive (the worst is Government Unions, talk about raping the tax payer). However there is a reason why I like poping into Wal-Mart its for the low prices and cheep oil changes and thats were I'm going to leave it at.

p.s. Why dose Target get a free pass?

Anyone remember IBM boasting that they didn't need a union, the workers were soooo happy, they had employee dinner day and nobody had to worry because they would ALWAYS have a job and a great pension? Then along came the 1990's and all those happy workers lost their jobs, some lost their homes, and those that stayed got the shaft on their pensions. The people who have stayed are nervous wrecks who don't know if they will make it to retirement.

Unions work to provide health care, job security, a living wage, a safe environment for workers, and a collective voice for humane treatment of the workers.

    ReplyDelete
  28. jibreel... do you like your weekend? How about the very idea of health care through your workplace? Do you like your sick days? Does your workplace offer maternity/paternity leave? How about an 8 hour work day with breaks, a lunch break? Do you have funeral leave? Like the fact that child labor is outlawed? Like the fact there is a minimum wage (even if it is not enough to survive on)
If you enjoy any of these things, then you better thank Unions. Unions are who fought for ALL of these things.
If Wegmans is good to its employees, thats great. But if you think for one minute that many corporations would offer the least they are legally required, think again... Corporations will tell you they are in the business of satisfying their stock holders, not their workers. They tolerate workers rights... and Unions are the ones that fight for them.

Its 2008 not 1908, I think American labor has came a long way, a very long way. Plus this is not steel workers or auto workers, these are min wage cashiers and cart boys... yes the flipping cart boys. Yes Corporation are in the business of "making money," like you go to work to "make money" you start a business to be your own boss "to make money." Young Jezzey and friend talk about "giting money" so if a Wal-Mart worker dont like the conditions: then quit! I've been a union employee before and I want now a huge fan. We have a local Government union now fighting the City of Buffalo for take home cars, now I know I'm going to be at the market today and seen a NYS Official plate in the supermarket parking lot. You ask me, Unions overstayed there welcome, you can see it in Auto Unions. GM and Ford are in the heath care business however Toyota and Honda are in the auto business. Toyota can spend money in research of hybrids while GM barley hanging on but we love Unions... they are useless when no one have a job.

As for 2008... I just won an award for 6 months back pay, all COBRA pays, severence pay, and a written apology from my former employer... all because they wanted to develop a strategic plan, that the workers objected to, and then they laid off ALL the employees without going through the Union. I am EXTREMELY grateful for my Union, without them, I wouldn't have gotten squat.

Remember, all those employers would not survive without our labor... and for it, we need to be fairly compensated. Unions fight to make sure we are.... in 1908 and 2008.

I just went to a regular grocery store and was shocked at the prices, I could not make it if I had to shop there. I know many a Walmart employee and they don't get paid jack, but that is the case in Las Vegas, almost every job here does not follow labor laws, almost everyone I know has had to call the Labor Board because of some forced overtime, no time allowed for lunch or breaks, Las Vegas employers do not follow the law and if you complain you WILL be fired. I use to travel to downtown Boston to Woolworth's just to get diapers when my son was a baby, because they had the cheapest price on diapers. In these hard economic times standing by principles is not a choice for many. I just graduated with a degree in accounting and cannot find a job in my field, they say I need two years experience the only one to offer me a job was Walmart.

    You said:
The fact that 50% of black people make up aids victims in America is most certainly a reflection of black values and culture just the same as that can be said about the gay community.
    -----------------------------

You don't suppose that maybe, just maybe, a good part of it is the fact that blacks are given worse care by physicians and others in the healthcare system even when they have as much money or insuracne as a white person? (documented fact, and even the AMA has admitted that the medical profession historically left blacks out in the cold).

Might it not have something to do with the fact that black men are arrested more often than white, locked up longer for the same offenses, and given even fewer opportunities to go straight once they're out (leading to recidivism) and thus exposed to more chance of contracting HIV, thus putting more of the infection into the community?

Might it not have something to do with the comparative lack of effort over the years to educate blacks about healthy choices, compared to the educational efforts in whiter communities?

Sure there are some internal problems like the high level of homophobia that convinces black men who are bi-sexual to go "on the down-low." But only a conspiracy minded Jew-fearing nutjob like yourself could possibly fail to see that the deck is stacked against blacks on several fronts and find a way to suggest that Jews run everything and that blacks are their lackeys.

Oh, and by the way, 50% of blacks do NOT have HIV. Some 600,000 of them do, and HALF of them don't know it. About one and a half million people give or take have HIV/AIDS, last I heard. There are more than 35 million blacks in the nation, so there is no way HALF of them could be infected.

    Jibreel:

Wal-Mart has had some public relations problems over the past several years for hiring illegal immigrants, discrimination against hiring women into management positions, and other labor problems both nationally and internationally. Everything Wal-Mart attempts to present themselves as America's store, the do things to the contrary. Target has a different marketing strategy and focuses on a different demographics, college educated, women between the ages of 21 to 49. Target couldn't compete with the deep discount store and decided to be store that is hip and trendy and that marketing strategy has worked with them thus far as the company is number two next to Wal-Mart. I wrote a research paper about Target for my management class a couple of years ago. Target manages to settle their labor disputes and maintains a more positive image than Wal-Mart.

The problem with a lot of the large corporations today is that they did not really follow Henry Ford's model of paying his employees a living wage without having the union come down on him. However, did not because of the union pressure, but it made good business sense as he saw them as not only as employees, but consumers. It does not make sense to hire people who cannot afford to buy your goods or services. In addition, he pay both blacks and whites the same wage which made sense as well because it did cause racial tensions.

Businesses like the auto makers are losing money due to a perfect storm. Rising costs of healthcare, people are no longer buying SUV due to the gas prices, and their inability to use hybrid technology before the Japanese. Most people do not realize that hybrid technology was created in the United States, but automakers did not take advances because they were greedy and still making money with SUVs. The Japanese were afraid that the US was going make the cars first, so they changed and put the hybrid out there first. Now US automakers are lagging beyond because its failure to the research they already had access. It's not because the US companies did not have the money for the research because it was already available, but more of not taking advantage of an opportunity.

Jibreel, you really have to go beyond the news because it's on the tip of the iceberg of information, but it really important to read more in-depth articles and documentaries because only have a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but full knowledge makes one more sapient. It also doesn't hurt to learn at least one new word day.

$520 for a pair of shoes? I can type it but I cant bring myself to form the words and let it pass my lips.
I bought a car for college in 1993 for $475. A little maintenance, cleaning products and a set of tires and that thing would be running today if some idiot housewife knew what a stop sign was. The person who pays $520 for LOAFERS does not know the value of money is. PERIOD! The clerks in the store they were bought from must have been laughing their asses off after Mrs. Morton walked out the door. I did pay over $100 for some tennis shoes but they had air bladders, adjustable ankle support, the whole nine yards and I still felt guilty every time I put them on. LOAFERS? THE HORROR! . Might as well take a stack of $20 bills and make confetti.

Im sure there are some meaty topics with this WalMart and union and "main street America stuff to tackle, but ..GEEZ! $520 for a G-damn pair of loafers, I just cant get past that.

I don't know if any of you remember Ben Klassen, he worked on George Wallace's presidential campaign, he quit when he got upset with George for if I remember correctly racial issues. Ben hated blacks, jewish people, and all nonwhite people. He referred to them as mud people.

He started a church with a bible written by him, wasn't no talks of love in his bible though, it was all hatred. A vile man who committed suicide, and Matt Hale took over. Matt was so hateful, until when he took the bar exam, they denied him because of his hateful beliefs, which are according to the "White Man's Bible".

The thing is they targeted and recruited white people with low IQ's, and exploited them to do their dirty work. A requirement of their church was for them to read the "White Man's Bible", and memorize it. What they really thought of their members wasn't worth two dead flies.

I read it before and trust me, it would even make decent white folks cringe, sick of the stomach, and piss them off. What they think about blacks, jews, and other nonwhite minorites is so ridiculous, full of hatred, and sickening, until you can't even feel sorry for their ignorance.
Their beliefs make the KKK and Citizen's White Council look like angelical choir boys.

    Mr. Whitey:

I agree with you on the shoes, that's a waste of money to walk on the ground with. However, I have spent $150 for a pair of boots, and I still have them too. Anyone who goes shopping with me had better plan on being there until store closes. That's how thorough and picky I am when it comes to spending my money.

  44. Deacon Blue and Anon,
There is a difference between 50% of blacks being AIDS victims than 50% of AIDS victims being black.

The CDC just did a study of 1,767 gay and bisexual men and found that 46% of the black males in that group was found to be HIV positive. It didn't say how many men were black.

The new estimate for new HIV infections annually is about 55,000, with it an estimate that 50% of those will be black. That would be around 27,000 a year. If this had been the worst case and had been the rate for 20 years it would only mean that there would be 540,000 black people out of 1,100,000 people living with AIDS.

With a population of approximately 36 million black people, 18 million black people with AIDS as Anon would have it; is erroneous.

I am not saying that the numbers are inconsequential. One black person or any person with HIV is one too many. What I want is for people who have no understanding of numbers to stop portraying black people as a group as carriers of HIV. Thereby impugning our humanity.

  49. McCain: racist, bigot & homophobe
    August 1, 2008 - 7:14am.
    By DOUG THOMPSON

John McCain, a member of the House of Representatives in the mid-1980s, often held court at a table near the bar at Bullfeathers, a popular Capitol Hill watering hole, telling jokes and matching hangers-on drink by drink.

As a Capitol Hill chief of staff, I often drank at Bullfeathers and was invited to join the throng at McCain's table one evening. A few minutes listening to the racism, bigotry and homophobia of the Arizona Congressman told me all I needed to know.

McCain loved to tell jokes about lesbians, blacks, Hispanics and the Vietnamese community that occupied a large section of Arlington County, Virginia, just south of the District of Columbia.

Of course, McCain didn't use polite language in the jokes: He used names like "fags" or "queers" or "dykes" or "niggers" or "spics" or "wetbacks" or "gooks."

A typical McCain joke (overheard at Bullfeathers):

Two dykes are talking at a bar and one leaves. As she walks toward the door, the other watches her leave and says out loud: "God, I've love to eat her out."

Two men are standing near by and one turns to the other and says: "I'd like to do the same. Guess that makes me a dyke."

Or another (also overheard at Bullfeathers):

Question: Why does Mexican beer have two "X's" on the label?

Answer: Because wetbacks always need a co-signer.

(McCain has a documented history of lesbian jokes. He's also come under fire for other jokes about rape.)

    Exampe:

Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?

Because Janet Reno is her father.

    Another example:

Did you hear the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die? When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, ‘Where is that marvelous ape?’

When he ran for the Senate, I attended a gathering of GOP operatives at the National Republican Senatorial Committee where McCain outlined his campaign strategy:

I play to win. I do whatever it takes to win. If I have to fuck my opponent to win I'll do it. If I have to destroy my opponent I won't give it a second thought.

McCain's so-called sense of humor has no limits when it comes to simple human decency. Shortly after former President Ronald Reagan announced he had Alzheimer's Disease, McCain told this joke at a GOP Fundraiser:

Do you know the best thing about having Alzheimer's?

You get to hide your own Easter eggs.

Even his wife is not immune. Writes Cliff Schecter in his book, The Real John McCain:

Three reporters from Arizona, on the condition of anonymity, also let me in on another incident involving McCain's intemperateness. In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, "You're getting a little thin up there." McCain's face reddened, and he responded, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt." McCain's excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days.

This is the man the Republican Party thinks should be the next President of the United States. What else should we expect from a party that promotes racism, homophobia and discrimination against anyone with a different skin color, sexual orientation or ethnic origin?

So we shouldn't be surprised that McCain's campaign strategy seeks to raise racial fear about Barack Obama, the first African-American with a serious shot at the Presidency of the United States.

John McCain is a racist: Always has been, always will be. A retired Naval officer who says he served with McCain in the Navy says he treated black sailors with disrespect and scorn. McCain refuses to release his detailed military record and some sources say that record includes incidents that include issues with black sailors.

Such attitudes are part of his family history. As noted by a black poster in Talking Points Memo:

I can't love America the same way John McCain does. When his daddy was Admiral, my daddy was mopping floors. And when his granddaddy was Admiral, all the Blacks in the entire Navy were mopping floors. But they still volunteered and went to war, even when their commanders didn't think they were brave enough to fight. So who loves America more? The cook on the ship who couldn't vote in 15 states, or the Admiral who dined on the meals he slaved over?

McCain's collection of off-color jokes are riddled with racist words and sentiments. Advisors have toned down the raunchy rhetoric of his early years in Congress but close aides say his attitudes have not changed.

McCain opposed making the birthday of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King a national holiday. During his 2000 campaign for President, he told reporters on his "Straight Talk Express: "I hated the gooks (North Vietnamese). I will hate them as long as I live."

Katie Hong of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, who reported the remark, wrote:

It is offensive because by using a racial epithet that has historically been used to demean all Asians to describe his captors, McCain failed to make a distinction between his torturers and an entire racial group.

It is alarming because a major candidate for president publicly used a racial epithet, refused to apologize for doing so and remains a legitimate contender.

For his 2000 campaign for President, McCain hired Richard Quinn, founder and editor in chief of Southern Heritage Magazine, to serve as his spokesman in South Carolina.

    Notes Salon.Com:

Quinn's articles have called Nelson Mandela a "terrorist" and King a man "whose role in history was to lead his people into a perpetual dependence on the welfare state, a terrible bondage of body and soul." In another piece, Quinn said of former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, "What better way to reject politics as usual than to elect a maverick like David Duke?" though he did condemn Duke's bigotry.

Irwin A. Tank, author of Gook: John McCain's Racism, notes a long and sordid history of racism from the presumptive GOP nominee, including:

    McCain's use of the anti-Asian slur "gook" publicly for 27 years before dropping the use for his current Presidential run;
    McCain's endorsement of George Wallace Jr., a frequent speaker at white supremacist events;
His vote against establishing a holiday for Martin Luther King's birthday and then another vote to rescind the holiday.
In answering a question about divorced fathers and child support, McCain called the children "tar babies."
The list goes on and on.

What else do you expect from a racist, bigot and homophobe?

The reason they thought that Obama could be accused of being elitist and it would hurt him politically is because blacks as a group resent those who are well off as "playing white".

White people don't mind it if Republican candidates or any other candidates are rich.

So even tho McCain and his wife are elitist he can call Barack elitist because there are different expectations for him.

Even Field Negro stated that he bet Obama didn't wear expensive shoes and he said it in Obama's defense, like it would be a bad thing if he did.

REgarding your accusations of white racism, I think you might expect that some people will be racist against you here because that is the tone of this blog, to be about race.

to use the term Field Negro might be provocative. It is taking on a name that you don't rightly own because you never were a field negro and it symbolically sets a tone that says you are against white people. Even tho they were never slave holders. Its a racist thing to do.

So you don't have a right to call others racist when they come in here and say provocative things to you.

The fact that you think you can have an expectation that whites will automatically play politically correct even though you are provoking, baiting and insulting them shows how much whites have been harassed with accusations of racism if they don't take your shit.

You late, Granny has already posted it. (smile) But isn't that something, a man running for President of the USA,which consists of a variety of Americans, but hates the majority of the America population?

    @ Hathor:

    You said:
    Deacon Blue and Anon,
There is a difference between 50% of blacks being AIDS victims than 50% of AIDS victims being black.
    ------------------------------

I know I buried it at the end of my post in response to Anonymous, but I hope it was clear that I actually understood that distinction you point out and am VERY aware that it is ERRONEOUS that 50% of all black people have HIV/AIDS.

If not for the sake of my reputation around here, I certainly want to make sure professionally (as I do healthcare and medical journalism) that I am NOT laboring under the same misconception about Anonymous.

And you are right, Hathor, that the numbers are still a tragedy, regardless.

not having read any of the 56 previous comments, I just want to say that watching that video ("Wal-mart: the high cost of low price") cured me of stepping foot into the Evil Empire ever again.

I've been tempted, but so far I've stayed strong.

Elitist and Out of Touch has more to do with an ideological mindset, not material wealth. I shop at Wal-mart and I didn't have attend Harvard to comprehend the charge.

  61. Field, I know I am a few days late here but just cause someone wants to spend a lot of money on some shoes doesn't make them elitist. It just means they enjoy some nice stuff. I have a few pairs of shoes that were over $500 because I wanted them and could afford them. They live in my closet next to my $12 shoes from payless and I probably wear the $12 shoes more. Doesn't mean I'm a shoe snob, I just like nice things.

There are many more things about McCain that are elitist than his shoes, how about picking on one of them?

natalie did you miss the point of the story, McSame called Obama elitist, and he's not an every man, he's wearing $500 shoes

  63. I support you, Field! No Walmart merchandise has entered the home of Mr. Funk and me for two years now. People say, "oh but all corporations are so bad, why discriminate?" I say the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Why do the Democrats support the illegals who compete with Americans - and that includes black Americans?
And why do blacks not stand up and demand border security when it is their communities which have been a haven for drug sellers/dealers, the Mexican Mafia, etc.
Just do a search and take a look at recent growhouse busts in Florida. They are online as are the names and pictures of the arrested.
Tell me these people (who sometimes have hundreds of thousands of dollars in their houses) are your friends.
You blame the wealthy for all your problems. Hah!

    So who owns Costco?

Who owns Exxon - stockholders - you and me in our pension funds.
Better yet, who owns international stock? Lots of common Americans in their pension funds.

Those stocks are performing better than American stock. But Obama wants to end that.

And he wants to bring in more illegals and reward them for breaking our laws. In Mexico, illegals are not rewarded.

I truly wish I could hear something good about what Obama could bring us.

But, I just see him bringing in more drug problems, more worker competition and more race problems.

It is unfortunate, but this country is not ready to have this change in culture. Like it or not, the hate levels are rising, not going down.

The more revenge people of color want and try to get - the more the whites and some other races are going to fight them being in power.

You can't continue to blame the present generation of whites for slavery - and I see that happening all over the net. They didn't have any slaves. So, then you are making a whole generation which could have been on your side - feel resentful. Anyone who is blamed for something they didn't do is going to get resentful.

So, if you truly want peace, look on the positive side and drop the slavery nonsense. None of you have been slaves. And that white supremacy nonsense is just ridiculous. Whites were all pretty much leveled during The Depression. They grew up working hard and having to move, move, move just to keep a job.

Do you want peace? That is the question.

Back in the good old days when Henry Ford was an employer, they probably didn't have massive shoplifting and identity theft, either.

  68. Does anyone think Obama is rocking Stacy Adams?
It used to be part of the American dream to aspire to be (and have) the best, but now we'd rather 'hope' big brother will create our 'change' for us via taxtion.
