I want to talk about the elephant in the room again; no, not the GOP logo, race.
Reading the very fine columnist, Dick Polman, in my hometown paper, The Philadelphia Inquirer, made me think about it. Honestly, I try not to think about this tricky little subject when it comes to his O-ness; and being around you Obamaholics (I am married to one) makes it easier for me not to. You are all so positive, so optimistic, so full of hope, and so confident that your fellow A-merry-cans will do what is right for all of us. But that damn elephant won't go away. And watching the repukes at their Klan rally.....I mean their convention, jarred me back to reality. [This years code word is "Community Organizer"]
So what is reality? Well the reality is that 12% of dumbocratic voters were willing to tell pollsters straight up, that race was "important to Obama's detriment". Maybe you didn't read that. I wasn't talking about what the rethuglicans said, I was talking about the dumbocrats. And they are supposed to be the enlightened ones? According to Polman; "last June, the Washington Post-ABC News poll devised a 'racial sensitivity index,' based on a series of nuanced questions that were designed to measure questions that were designed to measure the varying levels of racial prejudice in the white electorate. The pollsters came up with three categories ranging from most to least enlightened category--- The key finding: Whites in the least enlightened category--- roughly 30 percent of the white electorate--- favored John McCain over Obama by a ratio of 2-1" Now I don't know about you folks, but where I am from, that spells trouble for his O -ness. I know my Philly politics, and right here in this 75% democratic city, where 55% of the population is African American, his O-ness will be lucky to get 65% of the overall vote come November. Why? Because many of the poor white ethnic blue collar voters will be voting for McCain, that's why, and it ain't because they think Obama is inexperienced.
Don't believe me? Well how do you explain, according to Polman's article, that union organizers in places like Michigan are complaining to the press that "we're all struggling to some extent with the problem of white workers who will not vote for Obama because of his color." In the article, one mine electrician from Kentucky said: " I won't vote for a colored man. He'll put too many coloreds in jobs." Well, that's a pretty good reason for not voting for him I guess, we can't have too many of those "coloreds" working now can we. Might upset the balance of things. Change those traditional values that we cling to here in A-merry-ca. Ahhh A-merry-ca, some things will never change.
Polman's quote from David Thoreau is spot on: "public opinion is a weak tyrant, compared with our own private opinion."
Well my private opinion is that race still matters, at least to at least 30% of our fellow citizens. And I am sorry Obamaholics, in spite of the well meaning folks of the majority population, and you true believers in the minority, 30% is just too big of a number to make up.
Let's just hope you are wrong, field.
ReplyDeleteField,
ReplyDeleteSomeone left this on my blog.

Whitey is gittin' mobilized for 2012.
What Obama can do is get people out to the polls. This election is going to be about turnout.
ReplyDeleteOne dirty little secret is that in a lot of states, especially former Confederate states like my adopted home of South Carolina, the "least enlightened" Whites don't vote. It isn't just black folk who stay away from the polls in droves.
Race is very important, and not just in politics. When I get my new job, assuming it's there for me, I will resume my role as "Token Brown" (think South Park) because I'll be the only Latino in the office.
ReplyDeleteUnless Obama's beating McCain by at least seven points in the Gallup poll on November 4th, he's not going to win. There's too many closet racists that will pull the lever for McCain or stay home.
We will see.... in the meantime, I will be spending the next 60 days working to get Obama elected. I suggest we all do the same.
ReplyDeleteWell, on the bright side at least a Man of color ran for office. Right?! All this gloom and talk reminds me of when the Rev. Wright story broke and everyone said he was finished even back then.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait until the republicans are blamed for all Bush screw ups when they retake the White House. On the bright side I have a feeling Sarah Palin is going down eventually.
What Jody said!
ReplyDeleteThere's a huge mountain to climb, no doubt about it. But looking at the mountain while shaking your head won't get you to the top.
Jody, I love your optimism. And I do see all the Obamaholics all over Philly trying to register folks. But jody, will you please tell the good readers what we are dealing with when it comes to white ethnic voters here in Philly? Not to mention in places like Cleveland, and Detroit.
ReplyDelete"What Obama can do is get people out to the polls. This election is going to be about turnout."
"This election is going to be about turnout."
turnout and geography anon.5:46Pm, both are going to be key.
It's funny, I'm a white woman from the south but the most racist folks I've ever met in my life all live up North. And they're open about it. A dear friend of mine who married an ethnic from Philly said that when she came to visit the City of Brotherly love this summer, she ran into a bunch of union workers who openly vowed to vote against Obama and said nobody in the unions would vote for him. You're going to get that from many of the folks who live outside urban centers in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan. But that said, I honestly believe that Obama can pick just enough of those poor white votes who live in rural areas of those states. There's a reason he's been campaigning in Nowheresville,Pennsylvania. And it seems to be paying off. The L.A. Times did a story about how working-class women in Uniontown, PA. were largely turned off by Palin. They were all former Hillary supporters who said they weren't going to vote for Palin just because she was a woman. And they didn't like her her snickering comments about being a community organizer. I hope he keeps visiting those small towns and delivering his message, because I believe it's going to make a crucial difference in this election.

anonymous 5:55 PM
Shyyyyyyyyyyyt, hell no, phuck no, we need to do better than that. This is why I was for Hillary Clinton and a guaranteed Democratic win this fall.
...at least a Man of color ran for office... ain't worth a phuck!!
The republicans plan on 100 years of war to justify the continuing dismantling of all social programs. The money for the wars have to come from somewhere, and it won't be coming from the lowered taxes for the rich and the lowered taxes for corporations.
`
I wouldn't count Sheriff Bart out just yet. The problem is that he refuses to talk enough about the economy.
ReplyDeleteHe got bogged down in this nonsense about Iraq and wanting to prove he's tough enough to expand wars in Afghanistan and threaten Iran.
We have 6.1% unemployment, a lost decade in the stock market, flat or declining income for just about everyone, massive failures in the financial and housing markets, high gas prices, high food prices, etc. Obama needs to be pointing this stuff out every day. That resonates with folks. Even some racist folks might be willing to hold their nose and vote for him if they think he can change the economy around.
shady_grady is absolutely correct. The economy is the key, just like it was in '92. This needs to be hung around McSame's neck 24/7 for the next 2 months non-stop. Getting bogged down in distractions must be avoided at all costs.
ReplyDeleteAnd you know what? It's not Hillary that's going to save Obama from the Republican attack machine. It's Bill. Whatever you think of him, he presided over one of the longest periods of peace and prosperity in American history. Every time they call us the party of tax-and-spend liberals, we need to throw two words back in their face: Bill Clinton. We need to remind folks that we Dems have a record of turning the economy around. What do they have? Oh, yeah, I forgot--George W. Bush.

In the TV drama ROOTS, the poor white farmer asks of a NEW DEAL program, "Will the Niggers get it, too?" When told, "Why yes, of course." The poor white farmer replies, "Then I do not want it."
Hillary am done tole yall dat dis half-Negroe cannot win; let us all hope that she is more than incorrect.
`
Conversations like this leave a salty taste in my mouth cause they only stir up emotions of "why can't white folks see that we's human?" No apologies. We can't give ignorance or polls power. Obama is a destiny type thing and I refuse to think small. He made it this far and he can go farther. He's got Joe Biden to court those white working class voters. If they don't like Joe then they can stick a fork in it.
ReplyDeleteAnd also...have we forgotten that lots of working white class voters simply don't vote? They aren't this educated and powerful demographic that everyone thinks they are...
Field:
ReplyDeleteBeing an Obama supporter, I not naive to the fact that race is a factor in this campaign and it would not be a cake walk for him either. There are going to be some people who are not going to vote for Obama no matter what including if it is about his race. That is just a reality. However, I am keeping an eye on the electoral college map as well and currently Obama is leading. The map is also changing with Iowa turning blue in this election and it's because Obama strategically put people on the ground in that state early. Alaska was leaning toward Obama until McCain chose Pailn as his running mate, but I am not surprised that would happen. Obama is not naive either and didn't believe race wouldn't be a factor. It's about the electoral college vote. Rick Davis from the McCain camp said that the race will come down to personality. He negated the fact that the electoral college determines who will win the election. McCain could win the popular vote and still lose the election. It's about the math.
However, would this be a discussion if we did not have 8 million African Americans who are not registered to vote, and I do not know the number of Latinos who are eligible but not registered to vote, but, I imagine that number is in the millions as well. There many blacks in the south who do not vote. What if the 500,000 blacks in Georgia register to vote before the election? That state could turn blue, but it will not.
Anon 6:43
ReplyDeleteYou do make a valid point about working class and low voter turnout. That demographic could very well stay home. Polls are tricky as to the type of questions the poller my ask, and people do lie in polls. We will only know the answer on November 4th.
~
ReplyDelete... It's about the math.
hennasplace
No, it is about the gut; a visceral reaction.
In the voting booth on election day, voters will vote their gut, not their brain.
McCain is a guy you could have a beer with whilst you watch the game, tell dirty jokes, and
light-farts.
Hillary, will downs shots with you.
Barack is looking for the arugula.

I'm going to be salty with a LOT of voting blocks if they let Obama's race get in the way of voting in their own interests. I really hope the other POC voting blocks represent at the polls, too. This is no time for that all too common pasttime of POC infighting/backstabbing for crumbs from the master's table.
ReplyDelete@Nsangoma: Yeah I love that whole thing where if something could possibly benefit black people at the same time that it's helping whites, they don't want it. I've decided that if McCain wins I'm just going to stop caring about "hard-working americans" who care more about upholding racism than improving their own lives. If they don't care then why should I?
The fact that the race is close despite the last 8 years is proof that race matters. Like you I am not optimistic for an Obama win. He needs the White vote and I believe the figure that cares about race is more than 30%.
ReplyDeleteyep... its true. There are some die hard, foul mouthed, old school racists here in the city of brotherly love.... But, not enough to keep Michael Nutter (current mayor), or John Street (past mayor), or Chakah Fattah (US Congress), or Dwight Evans (State Rep), or (shall I keep goin Field?) from getting elected.
ReplyDeleteNow, since I have confirmed this for you.... I ask you to indulge me... on the AARP website is webcasts of their national meeting where they are discussing health care, medicare/medicaid and social security. They had both Obama and McCain via webcast. I encourage each and every one of you to go there and watch. Watch them both. AND notice all the old folks reactions to Obama vs McCain.... here is the link:

If the first debate on domestic issues looks ANYTHING like this... the Klan themselves will be voting for Obama!
Finally, stealing a joke from the Mudflats blog,
What's the difference between Sarah Palin and Dick Chaney? LIPSTICK!
The reality is that Field is correct, race will be a huge "secret" factor in this election, but unlike so many elections in the past, perhaps this time people will just vote, period. So many times in the past, we have allowed polls and reporters and popular opinion dictate the eventual outcome of a contest and decided it isn't worth getting up and going to the polls to cast a vote because we have already been told that we will not win. Well, all I can say is, I have been voting since I was old enough to do so, and I am still waiting for Mr. Gallup, or Mr. WSJ, or hell, even Mr. Nielsen to ask me what I like. So, as far as I am concerned, there are MILLIONS of people who will vote just like me who have never even been counted in those polls.
ReplyDeleteField, I know you are a big dog, award winning blogger and lawyer and so on... but what are YOU going to do NOT have another racist fascist and his lipstick wearing religious wingnut.
ReplyDeleteYou are laced with all kinds of negativity, but what are you going to do to not make it so? You can't blame racists if you allow them to treat YOU like a slave- as you sit in the room, negative about the door being locked. Question is this- did you try the doorknob? Did you try the window? Did you dig a hole? what else could you do? Or, do you just stay negative- in your chair- sharing your negativity with others. Hoping they give up like you...
Jody:
ReplyDeleteAmen!
Evita:
Amen, amen, and amen again, and that goes for the rest of the negative thinking folks as well. I BELIEVE Obama is gonna be the next President of the USA. YES WE CAN!
Jody:
ReplyDeleteCould you give that link again, because it's not working? Thank you.
Jody:
ReplyDeleteNevermind, I got it. Hey, I like the fact that it caption comes with it. I'm hearing impaired so, this is great, I don't have to turn my speakers up full blast to hear.
Granny,
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure... I went to it again and this is working:
http://www.aarp.org/aarp/events/Life_at_50_dc/
Nothing, but nothing, can take away from what happened on the night of August 28, 2008, no matter what happens on November 4th. I'm a 57 year old pinkish American, a political refugee from Texas. I remember the hopeful years of JFK and RFK, and the 58000+ who died in Vietnam. I survived 12 years of Reagan/Bush, but after two wars, 4000+ Americans dead, countless thousands of innocent Iraqis, and 8 years of BushCo, I didn't think I had any hope left in me. But then this fella with the funny name came out of nowhere and told us that we were better than this. That we're all in this together, and it's not "every man for himself."
ReplyDeleteI'm not Jewish, but I studied Judaism many years ago and derived much comfort from it. One of the most famous--some say the most important--figures in Jewish history was Rabbi Hillel, who wrote the words: "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am only for myself, who am I? And if not now, when?"
The neocon nihilists are only for themselves. That's a dead end--ethically, morally, and historically. If that's not self-evident after 8 years of BushCo, then it will surely be after 4 years of McSame and McCandy. And if it's not, then the U.S. deserves whatever fate awaits it as a consequence of failing schools, failing infrastructure, failing financial markets, failing health care, and failing energy policies. But I hope it doesn't come to that, and for the next 60 days I will do what I can to make sure it doesn't happen.
I'm with Jody. I'm all about getting this man elected. And turning out the vote.
ReplyDeleteThe craziest thing I've experienced? Cleveland is a cesspool of every color of ignorance. I hear a lot of Black people who say they don't want to vote for Obama just because he's Black. SMH.

ReplyDeleteMcCain Moves Ahead of Obama in Poll
In his best Gallup poll showing in months, GOP presidential nominee John McCain enjoys a post-convention bounce and moves ahead of his Democratic rival Barack Obama, 48 percent to 45 percent. This is also McCain's largest advantage over Obama since May, when he led by as much as six percentage points.

ReplyDeleteI'm doing whatever I can to make sure that it happens as well. One of my granddaughters and a lot of my nieces and nephews are old enough to vote. All of them are what you would call social butterflys so to speak; therefore, I come in contact with a lot of young people throughout the day on a daily basis.
I've been encouraging them to vote and register to vote if they haven't. To my surprise, the majority of them have already registered to vote and those that hadn't registered to vote, went and registered. The kids know better than some older people that this election is different and more important than any we've had in the past. I believe that Obama is gonna be the next President.
One of my relatives never voted or took an interest in politics in his entire life. His favorite words were all politicians are just alike, big liars, and make empty promises. However,Obama's speech that night changed his mind. This will be their first time voting in his entire life who by the way is a retiree--senior citizen.
"Question is this- did you try the doorknob? Did you try the window? Did you dig a hole? what else could you do?"
ReplyDeleteevita, I understand your frustrations. But please don't shoot the messenger. The truth is, I have given money (lots of it), well, at least my household has:)) I have given my time, maybe not to Obama per se; but to get people engaged and to help groups organize (Yes, I am a community organizer), and I have worked to make sure that there is no voter fraud practiced on my peeps. (free of charge I might add)
Soooo have I done enough for you? Look, don't get it twisted, I know it seems that all I do is talk a lot of shit on this blog (which I do), but if the truth hurts, so be it. It doesn't mean that I am not out there trying to make what I talk about NOT be true.
And I didn't try the doorknob or the window, because that would mean that I am IN the house. But I did dig a hole, and it goes all the way to freedon away from this plantation that we are all living on ;)
shady grady and ernesto, I agree, that the economy is the key, but A-merry-cans have never had a problem voting against their own best interest, and they won't now.
"In the TV drama ROOTS, the poor white farmer asks of a NEW DEAL program, "Will the Niggers get it, too?" When told, "Why yes, of course." The poor white farmer replies, "Then I do not want it."'
Nuff said!
OK fuck it, I ain't voting. What's the point? O-man can't win. You convinced me. Viva La Bushonomics! 4 more years of Cheney in a skirt! Huzzah! Huzzah!
ReplyDeleteJust kidding of course. ;)
ReplyDeleteYES WE MUTHER---- CAN!! :)
I think it's says more about us not being optimistic than some white people not voting for Obama because he is a black man. I am going to admit this, I did not vote for Jackson in 84 or 88 in the presidential candidate, nor for Al Sharpton in 04 because there are not the ones for me and they were not going to win. Frankly, history was not on their side. However, history is more on Obama's side.
ReplyDeleteThere has not been a generation who believe that black people not going to progress any further. We tend to care more about white people are going to do or say when it comes to black people. We give too much power to race to point it drains us of our optimism and question our legacy as black people.
I am not voting for Obama because he is black, but it's capable and smart enough to lead the country and knew from the moment I saw him. Of course, the latter part is intuition, but my head and heart are usually in line with one another.
Field (and Nsangoma) said:

Oh please! Now your'e quoting from a movie that was depicting times from over 50 years ago???!!!!
Well, you go ahead... me, I am sitting here, watching a beautiful young African American woman play in the finals of the US Open, after watching the beautiful Anita Baker sing the national anthem.
I am gonna watch Barack Obama continue to run one of the smartest campaigns in US history and then on November 5th, I am gonna watch you run down Broad Street with a bunch of crow stuffed in your mouth. And, I am inviting all of my colleagues to join me!
There is a website called www.pollster.com. It has the current electoral college map, articles, analysis, and polls.
ReplyDeleteThose white ethnics might not matter. People in Mountain West might cancel them out. O man doing well in Colorado, and don't be shocked if he picks off a southern state or a rapidly purpleing state like Virginia. The white ethnic demographic is dying a slow death. Believe, the alternative to is too scary.
ReplyDeleteField,
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely right. Matter of fact, everything in life in this here country can be boiled down to race. And like you, I'm not trying to be negative but realistic. But we will do what we can in our own sphere of influence. Because no matter what happens on NOv. 4, you will still need to represent in court and I in the hospital.
The "Bradley/Wilder Effect" in is full force, I believe. But our ace in the hole will be the new young voters who don't carry the same baggage we do. And the fact that they ain't pollin' us. Black folk WILL come out, and that is why there's gonna to be whole lot more "voting irregularities". That 12% ADMIT their racial bias is revealing.
The sad thing is that only the blogosphere is talking about this elephant in the room. Obama can't and the MSM won't. The right doesn't need to. At least Mario Cuomo confessed that it was significant in his commentary on McCain's speech and the rethugs convention.
America won't admit htat the real reason they don't want to vote for his O'ness is the elephant in the room. Every other negative they cite are surrogates for the real agenda.
But I wouldn't count him out. He beat the Clinton machine. It could happen....Yes We Can!
BTW, like the new header. And will follow you to .com tomorrow.
Field, I want you to be wrong but in my heart I feel like you. I live up here in Maine, almost as white as Alaska and pretty democratic. Yet I am starting to see more and more McCain signs, granted the Obama signs are still outnumbering them. But this is a state that is hurting financially yet there are folks here who I know won't vote for Obama because he is Black.
ReplyDeleteIts the working class white folks that scare me, and I honestly don't know what Obama can do to connect with that segment of the population. Hopefully if he can focus on the economy that will give him the numbers he needs but right now McCain-Palin IMO opinion have that segment of the population focused on these damn wars we are fighting.
Its not the Roots scene, but the scene from The Great Debaters when the organizers explain to the poor white farmer how he is still being screwed just like the black man, and they listened because, the screwing was hurting really bad.
ReplyDeleteBoth pollster.com and electoral-vote.com show Maine's 4 votes going solidly Democratic. I know it's hard to believe it when the loudest voices are the most racist--and we have rednecks here in CT, too--but both sites show Obama in the lead, with 260 and 301 votes respectively. (270 needed to win). CA (55 votes) and WA (11 votes) are both polling solidly Democratic. So it won't be an early night, but I don't think it will be the nightmare we had in 2000.
ReplyDeleteAs we enter the 4th quarter of this election game the Republicans are deploying the Southern Strategy for Nov 4, 2008:
ReplyDelete“From now on, the Republicans are never going to get more than 10 to 20 percent of the Negro vote and they don't need any more than that... but Republicans would be shortsighted if they weakened enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. The more Negroes who register as Democrats in the South, the sooner the Negrophobe whites will quit the Democrats and become Republicans. That's where the votes are. Without that prodding from the blacks, the whites will backslide into their old comfortable arrangement with the local Democrats”.
I must admit I was not an Obama person when the primaries started, my guy was Dennis Kucinich, I’ve watched without bias this election as it develop. You guys have done a great job and you cannot stop. In Texas we have until September 30, 2008 to register for the election.
It’s starts and end at the grassroots or in this case the netroots.
We'll get pass this “ Race Thing”… For Real
Spot on, Field, except for one not-so-minor point:
ReplyDeleteThis year's code word? It's not "community organizer".
It's "small town"
She's a small-town mayor, small towns are what make this country work, blah blah blah. Having spend more than enough time in small towns, I will admit that there are a lot of things that small towns have. However, some things that are always in short supply in small towns are things like tolerance, inclusion, diversity, and acceptance of people's differences.
THAT'S why the Republican base is so energized. They have someone they can hang their hat on that can talk about their way of life, where everyone that matters is like them and to hell with everyone that is not.
Obama's struggles in places like Pennsylvania and Kentucky have shown the Republicans that their best shot at winning this thing is to play up the angle of race, but in a way that everyone can say it without, you know, risking a beat-down on the spot.
If this campaign is on the issues, the Republicans lose, hands down. They know this as well as we do. The only chance they have (and it's a well-used play) is to bring it back to race as much as they can without saying "don't vote for the Black guy"
Hey field,
ReplyDelete1st time commenter. I read the blog all the time hoping to gain your unique perspective. I'm American Indian from OK living in WA; a politics junkie and yellow dog Democrat too.
Was just curious about the veracity of all the polling this time around especially considering all the new and returning voters and cell phone usage.
I don't doubt Obama has a long row to hoe mostly due to race but I guess I'm just more optimistic in spite of your comments and the polls. Thanks
Granny just thought about something. With all this hoopla about Palin the pit bull wearing lipstick, MSM has not showed Biden speaking events and what he's been saying as if he disappeared off the face of the earth. They haven't even mentioned him. Hmmm... A man can claim sexism as well, can't he?

How come so few people mention just how dumb McCain is and Sarah is not far behind. In an email I got recently I saw the following:
ReplyDelete"According to wikipedia, John McCain graduated from Naval Academy ranking 894 of 899 (fifth from the bottom). Today we learn that Sarah Palin received her bachelor's degree in journalism after transferring five times in six years: Hawaii Pacific University, North Idaho College, University of Idaho, Matanuska-Susitna College, University of Idaho again.
Keep in mind that McCain's father and grandfather were 4 star admirals. I suspect that the only reason they let him graduate was because of his illustrious ancestors. He is really not very smart. We don't need another dummy for president.
Code Pink, Code Pink... McCain just shot up 10% in the polls
ReplyDeleteSarah P is the true change agent
GOP is the Americas original OG's
We Cant be Stop!
You can regesture all the voters you want in BLUE STATES its about PA were that good ole Center with Bucks County will make it RED... even ACORN can't stop this. This "was" a Democrat Year before they started believing there own press.
Sorry Grapes Dems... you still have American Major Cities (well not for long, the GOP is coming back for those too)
original OG's? Doesn't OG mean original gangsters? Yup, they are gangsters alright. However, don't count your chickens before they hatch.
ReplyDeletejibreel..... you keep the rural and we'll take urban... here are the stats, you do the math... you can do math can't you?

Population living in Urban Areas 225,956,060 79.219%
Population living in Rural Areas 59,274,456 20.781%
Obviously Sarah can't add... she keeps insulting people who live in cities.. and community organizers who are in the MILLIONS in this country. She's gonna find she is insulting the overwhelming majority of Americans. Obama wins.
its not his race, it is about him, his lack of courage, his inexperience, his stupidity, his pride, his lies and flip flops, his fucking sexism. like can’t no black man be an elitist. bullshit, try attending black churches and hanging out with black professionals while being black. barack cares about barack, in barry’s mind, the rest of you black folks should be able to succeed if barack did. white folk ain’t worry about his color, they are worried about his mediocrity, sold as brilliance. backtrack is not the best person for the job. he does not deserve to be president. he needs to take his ass back to southside and do some real work for once in his life. what has barack done for black folk beside talk the talk. i bet his ass can’t even play bones.

The polls are crap. Unless you know exactly how they were worded, the sample, etc, they are no better than reading the entrails of animals. They're just a way to bully people. First, register them, then get them to show up a the polls And make sure there is no voter fraud. The rest is bla bla bla.o

WASHINGTON—Democrat Joe Biden says he's debated "an awful lot of tough, smart women" throughout his career and next month's vice presidential debate with Republican Sarah Palin will be no exception. But he'd like to know where she stands on issues.
"She's a smart, tough politician, so I think she's going to be very formidable," Biden told NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday.
The Democratic senator from Delaware and the Republican governor of Alaska are scheduled to debate Oct. 2 at Washington University in St. Louis.
Biden, serving his sixth term in Congress, said, "There's a lot of very tough, smart women in the United States Senate I debate every day." So, he said, "It's not new" to be going up against Palin. He also mentioned his wife, Jill, who has a Ph.D.
Asked whether he'd debate Palin differently than he would Republicans Mitt Romney or Tom Ridge, two former governors who figured into speculation about John McCain's running mate, Biden said the only difference is that he knows their positions on issues.
"I have no idea what her policies are. I assume they're the same as John's. I just don't know," he said of Palin.
Biden said she delivered a great speech to the Republican National Convention last week in St. Paul, Minn., but "her silence on the issues was deafening.
"She didn't mention a word about health care, a word about the environment, a word about the middle class. They never parted her lips ... so I don't know where she is on those things."
"Everybody talks about change. Let me tell you something, I am fascinated to find out that all of the sudden John McCain and Sarah Palin are the agents of change," Biden said. "Name me one single place where the McCain-Palin ticket disagrees with George Bush."
ReplyDeleteAssociated Press writer Matt Gouras contributed to this story from Kalispell, Mont.
If 12% of the people in the poll said that race would be a problem. That would mean that 88% said that it would not be a problem for them.
ReplyDeleteWell, we all know that when it comes to polls, especially on race, white people lie.
They say one thing so as to not be percieved as being racist, but act differently in reality. You know, the ones who always say, "I have black friends..."
If you remember, the polls in New Hampshire had him beating Hillary after his win in Iowa. I'm willing to bet that the 88% who said it wouldn't be a problem are lying too.
"i what has barack done for black folk beside talk the talk. i bet his ass can’t even play bones."
ReplyDelete---Real Talk.
"According to wikipedia, John McCain graduated from Naval Academy ranking 894 of 899 (fifth from the bottom).
---Bush has an MBA from Harvard. Your point?
Biden has not been slacking off....

I'm starting to love this guy!)
I guess all the stuff you are spewing here is enlightened logical color blind thought. I especially like your willingness to give people who dont agree with you charming and respectfull names like dumbocrat. Only the smartocrats can keep up with your blinding intelect. I think maybe the reason that alot of us whiteys are suspect of a chicago machine politician who votes in lockstep with the democratic leadership 97% of the time is that the media seems to elect a new KING OF THE BLACKS every 4 years and you guys all jump up and down for them and they turn out to be the same turds every time. Please tell me why I should not be suspect when the last 2 Kings were Jesse and Al. And please stop with the slavery bullshit the only overseer you have seen in 100 years was the actors in roots. the real test of which population is racist will be to see how many blacks vote for mccain. I think it will show exactly what you already know. BLACKS ARE THE MOST RACIST GROP IN AMERICA. spew whatever hate whitey remarks you want in rebuttal but please think about it. WHO IS PICKING THESE GUYS AND WHY DO YOU KEEP ALLOWING IT
ReplyDeleteWell the 30% is real. So if Obama plays to the other 70%???
ReplyDeleteTROLL ALERT! TROLL ALERT!
ReplyDeleteWTF was all that shit about anon 12:58a?
"According to wikipedia, John McCain graduated from Naval Academy ranking 894 of 899 (fifth from the bottom)."
ReplyDeleteHah, that would explain why our resident rainman Jibreel is on his nutts so hard. :)
Regardless of what you think, Field, I still am optimistic. This election is going to be about turnout. I just came across an Obama Web site that lets you know if you are still registered to vote and when early voting starts in your state. Pretty soon it will tell people where they can go to vote. I hope that people will pass it along, and put it on your blogs and MySpace pages because people need to know now whether they are still registered to vote.
ReplyDeleteHere's the link: www.voteforchange.com
Field, thank you so much for posting the graphic and widget in support of the "I Am A Community Organizer" day of blogging today, and the Afrosphere Action Alerts widget. The outpouring of support shows that the AfroSpear really is unified in conviction and action.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great new header above, too.
As for my continuous rants against the use of the term "race" (as opposed to the obvious existence of color and ethnicity-based political, economic and cultural battles), you and I are saying the same thing, except that I refuse to use the word "race" in saying it, for the reasons I've been harping on since forever.
However, I know I'm a political fool to jump on you about this on a day when you've done so much that I personally asked you for. Someday, I'll learn to just say "thank you" before going off and ranting against the "race" word. And I apologize for the thunderous fireworks that have accompany my statement of my conviction today.
You have been an essential mentor to me since even before you convinced me that the name "AfroSpear" should be the name that all of us should adopt. And so, I thank you for all that you've done and for all that you're doing.
It's all about turnout and making sure the voting machine actually work.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine a McCain/Palin presidency.
I'm doing what I can here to help folks to register to vote and to remember to sign up for their absentee ballots.
I am sure you Obamaholics are going to work very hard, and you are going to give his O-ness every chance to win, but sorry Jody, I WON'T be making that run :)
ReplyDelete"Regardless of what you think, Field, I still am optimistic. This election is going to be about turnout."
I agree that turnout will be important, but isn't it the Electoral College that matters? What good is increasing the turnout in a state that he was already going to win. He needs to turn out the vote in states like Pistolvania, Ohio,Virginia,Michigan, and Iowa.
"I guess all the stuff you are spewing here is enlightened logical color blind thought. I especially like your willingness to give people who dont agree with you charming and respectfull names like dumbocrat. Only the smartocrats can keep up with your blinding intelect. "
And since you can't keep up.....
jibreel, every time you post you give the Obamaholics hope :)
And east austin...you are right, the "Southern Strategy " is in full effect. The rethugs (there is a name again anon. 12:58AM)are very good at identity politics.
I'm pretty sure you're take on this is right.
ReplyDeleteBut I sure as hell wish it wasn't.
Racism is as fundamental to white Americans as the air they breathe, and most are just about as aware of it.
What they don't understand is that they will never be able to realize their alleged "dream" unless/until they stand up and square things with their own history.
Just my opinion.
sj
The media was being very nice or fake by stating that race matters to at least 30% of the white electorate. I think the figure is quite higher. Many of the so-called mainstream brethren claim to be enlighted, but when they go behind the curtain to vote they will be struggling with even entertaining the idea of pulling the lever for a black man.
ReplyDeleteBesides, Sarah's nothing special. Those so-called mainstreams will pick anyone else as long as it's not a non-white person. That's the world we're living in.
I hate typos.
ReplyDeleteBesides, Sarah's nothing special. Those so-called mainstreamers will pick anyone else as long as it's not a non-white person. That's the world we're living in.
Jibreel:
ReplyDeleteAccording the Gallup Poll John McCain is ahead 3 points, McCain 48, Obama 45. Unfortunately, for the McCain he is unable to make any appearances without Sarah Palin at his side and that could a negative towards in the end. We can pay attention to the polls everyday, but as Field said earlier, it is going to be the battleground states that will make the difference. There is a good chance that Obama will Iowa. The McCain camp pulled out of the state of Iowa with Obama having an 8 to 15 lead depending on what poll you believe. That's another problem, the amount of polls that out there. Gallup has McCain three points, and the national trend poll the two candidates are a dead heat.
Jib is reading the USA/Today poll which does a 10 point lead for McCain with most likely voters, however, we do not know that type of questions USA asked the people who participated in the poll. I can take a poll and be rather manipulated depending on my agenda.
I do not identify with Sarah Palin or John McCain, but I can also say the same about Obama and Biden. I do not know what to have a beer or dinner with these people. The election for me who best can lead this country. I do not see Palin and McCain doing because they are part of the party that ran the country to the ground, and I am not in the business of giving the party another chance.
http://washingtontimes.com/news/2008/sep/07/obama-verbal-slip-fuels-his-critics/
ReplyDeletethis why you won't see the inside of the White House Gardener's Shack!!!!
LMAO
the polls aren't in a dead heat......McCain's up by 10!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's right...read'em and weep we came out of our conven with at least a 10 point bump you had maybe 7 for 2 days!!!!!
Hennasplace...
ReplyDeleteEver herd of the worst President is American History... Jimmy Carter! This is the Economic Policy that Obama wants? Wait, yesterday Obama said he might have to keep around the Bush Tax Cuts. Carter was our world standing at: American is Soft! Iran has taking hostages (fun fact: Those same Dudes are in POWER in IRAN, thank you Jimmy). 4 dollar gas slowed American down but the gas hike during Carter was epic devastation... then again thanks to fuel prices on auto driving business like your Landscapers, Roofers, Contractors, delivery Truckers, Semi Truckers... Holy Shit they need FUEL and not made by flpping sunshine and lollypops. Looks like we need to start Drilling Baby Drill (and you know them dudes with the SUV's that dont plan on letting go anytime soon because a Prius in the hood an't cool) but while Obama says he will give out more bribes from the Government the cost of business has already been past on to YOU. Natural Gas is how we heat our homes in WNY and Coal gives us electricity. I got bad news about wind power, 8 wind farms couldn't even power the SEPTA trains for 2 hours. So when you cry about "Big Coal" thats Central Penn baby right there so thank you for making PENN RED. If you act now you cat secede Philly into New Jersey were it belongs, Obama and Biden will approve it like that bill in the senate they voted for that in a loophole Hawaii could do the secede from the Union!
Its hard to talk about "hope and change" when the more you talk, you become more of the same time and time again. There is NO TIMES that Obama took on his own party, and he votes with Nancy/Ried 97% of the time and those two have VERY LOW poll numbers... very low but I guess those dose not matter.
before I end, Iowa is a special case. Iowa loves its corn. Obama says he will keep turning Corn into GOLD so why not vote for the guy thats going to make you RICH but who cares if it fucks over the rest of the World with driving up corn prices while being subsides by the Feds... but this is a Democrat function is its get a free pass like Marion Barry. I have a scare fought that Mayor Kirkpatrick of Detroit could get out of Jail run for re-election and WIN... Gotta love Democrats.
Keep your moonbat politics local so the rest of the nation has examples on how we don't want the nation to become.
After this post 3 people was shot in Philly. Field Remember to duck and low craw if something goes down.
What counts:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.electoral-vote.com/
jody....majority rules!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's why the demwits are losing their asses
Wake up and realize that the majority of WORKING Americans will vote and this bussiness of giving everyone who wants to sit at home and spit out babies so we can support them is going to STOP!!!
Yes, the economy isn't doing well and gas is up...just more reasons why we (WORKING) Americans are going to vote repub in Nov.....
jibreel...
ReplyDeleteJimmy Carter?!?! I'll take your J.C. and raise you..uh..let see..
ex-Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas) Forced to resign his position as House majority leader; under indictment for money laundering in Texas; likely the focus of a Justice Department investigation for his ties to admitted felon and former super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
Rep. Randy Cunningham
ex-Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-Calif.)
Pleaded guilty to taking $2.4 million in bribes from defense contractors and sentenced to 8 years in prison.
ex-Rep. Bob Ney (R-Ohio) Resigned as chairman of the House Administration Committee because of allegations that he used his office to help Jack Abramoff and his clients. Recently released from jail.
ex-Rep. Richard Pombo (R-Calif.) Went to bat for a Jack Abramoff client; he short-circuited an investigation into the owner of a failed savings and loan; his aides attempted to scuttle an environmental regulation that could have hurt the Pombo family’s business.
And there's more...
@anon... you might want to brush up on your civic lessons.... it is the electoral college that decides the president, not majority rule.. think Gore in 2000.
ReplyDeleteSecond, you said:
"Yes, the economy isn't doing well and gas is up...just more reasons why we (WORKING) Americans are going to vote repub in Nov....."
Are you a fucking idiot? Who the hell do you think has been in control for the past 8 years? If you want this to change, you don't keep giving the same people who created this mess the control. That sir, is the definition of insanity... to keep doing the same thing over and over expecting a different outcome.
This is clearly a republican mess and McCain is a major contributor. His record speaks for itself. Voted with the republicans over 90% of the time.
Even here in the bluest of blue states, Massachusetts, I have heard comments at the gym, golf course and barrooms that some white folk, that are dye in the wool dems, are not voting for Obama because he is black... straight up.
ReplyDeleteI might have to move to Canada or find my cousins in Ireland if McNuggets and Tootsie back in to this thing. UUUUGH!!
To add a another twist to Field's words....According to columnists and researchers at the Black Agenda Report: 1) Barack Obama believes that 90% of the racism that once constrained black people (socially and economically) in the U.S. no longer exists. 2) The disaster in New Orleans following Katrina was not due to racism.
ReplyDeleteFriends, I am white and I am liberal Republican and even I know that is not true.
Let me ask this question: Do you any of you know any black people (or other people of color) who vote Republican? Have you ever asked him/her why? You may find that he/she has some solid answers.
My wife, a woman of color, votes Republican. Me...I am joining the National Republicans for Obama organization. Though I disagree with him on several things, I believe he is the better candidate.
Given my previous cynical posts on the Republican party, I don't give the impression that I am affiliated with them. I just happen to enjoy watching this perverse chess game we call politics.
And yes, another news flash: Some strands of the democratic voting base are among the most racist and sexist people I have met. Pennsylvania may very well not go blue this year if there are too many of these old disgruntled white union cronies who are registered to vote. Most of you on this forum have nothing in common with them.
I swear we give white folks too much power....way to much...who cares what massa thinks? I'm sorry but if we focused on white folks approval and use them as a measuring stick for success we wouldn't have half of what we have today. It's about focus; that's how dreams are actualized.
ReplyDeleteThere's polls, facts, political analyst, and all kinds of information thrown into our faces daily; but nothing beats laser sharp focus on making a goal happen in spite of the naysayers. This is the secret ingredient for every person of success: FOCUS.
The only thing that I would really like to see is Hilary come after Palin. I mean....after all...this woman is trying to do what no woman has ever done before....essentially blocking Hilary. And Hilary has been exceptionally quiet.
Jib:
ReplyDeleteCarter is not the worse President in the U.S. History. I have to tell that I use to be a history minor and the President is considered the worse is Harding because his administration was upset in scandal, and it was fortuitous for him that he died while in office because he would have been impreached and kicked of office. If were going to pick one of the top worse democratic presidents, then Grant would be on that list. Carter does not make the 10 top list of worse U.S. Presidents in history.
In addition, the last two democratic presidents elected into the office were not liberal, but conservative. Carter and Clinton were more conservative, and gave them the ability to win states in the south.
Jib, I wouldn't talk about the wind power when McCain has in his commercial a photo of windmills in the background with him standing the in front talking about alternative energy. Here is a reality, the country will have to find alteratnive sources of energy.
Here is the fact, although McCain is ahead of the polls, Obama is head in the electoral college and that is what counts at the end of the day. It's not about the popular vote. If McCain or Obama intends to the win then it comes down the battleground states like Virginia, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Colorado, Pennslyvania, Ohio, Flordia, Nevada, North Carolina, and Montana.
I am an Obama supporter, and have no problem admitting it. However, from an historical perspective, I think it's great, and hope with this in mind that everyone understands the election process because a lot of us do not. I think Obama understands what he needs to do to win the election. It's the economy stupid, and all he has to do is drive that home. McCain's 10 point surge is fine for now, and it may not last because polls goes up and down from day to day.
jib- what is that crack your smoking? you brought up Jimmy Carter, but ignored what has been happening the last 8 years? can I get some of that maybe it will make me forget the fact I can't get a job, find a job or pay my bills. It funny how you had no comment on the fact that the RNC only had 36 minoirity delegates, that your candidate bit Obama's message of change, that Ronald Reagan was the biggest celebrity candidate, that McSame and Palin are involved in past and present ethical violations, their lack of understanding about the position of the VP, Economics and Constitutional Law. I would like to say thank you for the last 8 years of hardship since I know you voted for Bush twice, great judgment, I hated paying $1.49 for gas, I totally wanted to help the oil companies rake in record profits. But you and your ilk ignore the real issues and vote on personality? I am a Obama supporter because he did not support going to war in Iraq, I actually look at the issues, but like has been stated most Americans are C students so of course they hate some one that actually went to Harvard and studied the law and rejected working for a big law firm to community organize, we wouldn't want someone smart to run for office, who actually has a stand on the issues.
ReplyDeleteThe question is how many of that 30% would vote for a white Democratic candidate. If, say, only 5% of them would, that gives Obama a 1.5% disadvantage - which does not appear insurmountable in this election.
ReplyDeleteBean:
ReplyDeleteHere is a new line: Do not smoke crack and type.
Jib has done the same time the RNC did last week with not mentioning the last eight years and Bush's name.
bean twn chica:
ReplyDeleteOnly 36 delegates who are minorities at the RNC? Where did you get that information?
I know the percentage of minority delegates is smaller than the DNC, but I am hard pressed to believe the number as that small.
Adam:
ReplyDeleteFour years ago, the number of minority delegates was larger. I think it's was over 125, and shrunk down to 36. When you think about that is a significant fall from the previous election year. The question becomes the reason for the dip.
Bean..
ReplyDeleteI got that good CIA purple top keep a black man down crack
Henn... When it comes to the Presidents, I'll let you win however Grant was better than people think however Carter is the reason why you dont elect Obama.
Fun with the EC!
Dose the Bradley Affect ring a bell. This is not me wanting to keep a good black man down for bring this up however when you have the press trying to equate why whites in Central PA not voting for a Black Man because gashp.... HE is black is just flat out wrong but the stigmatizing of being tagged a racist is enough fuel to just lie to the pollster. These Central PA voters have been called rubes until they are needed to elected a black man that dose not harbor any of there values. There is a reason why they dread going to Philly for a Flyers game but they do it and after the game they are a B-Line to the 476 back to were ever because the social ills that plague Philly and other cities like it will not be fixed by a President and not one who is routed in Communist Teaching and this is not from Jerome Corsi book but Obama's own two books. Saul Alwinki is not a cool dude to be quoting. Giving out fish to steel workers instead of teaching then not to have to depend on YOU as a Community Organizer is not the one I want earmarking social programs that has been proving NOT TO WORK! Did not LBJ tried half this stuff and see were the black family is now after 40 years? Democrat Run Cities and I think its time to Run them out of Cities. Find me a good Democrat Mayor and I'll find waist and pork!
Bean...
Your are hopeless. Biden VOTE FOR THE WAR!!!
Gas is high because more people are using it i.e. China and India. The US Oil Companies are not making as much as Iran and the rest of the OPEC nation. Plus its going to get cold quick and HOME HEATING OIL comes from the ground! Looks like we need to domestically drill damm it!
Field... How about them Eagles!
The only thing that I would really like to see is Hilary come after Palin. I mean....after all...this woman is trying to do what no woman has ever done before....essentially blocking Hilary. And Hilary has been exceptionally quiet.
ReplyDeleteit ain't hillary's job to go after Palin. Barack fucked over Hillary, calling her a racist. she owes him nothing. he needs to fight his battles on his own. instead he relies on women the very people he hates. he likes his dick sucked by white men. in the back of a limo. least the white men live. he kills the black choir directors who've sucked his dick.
Many of the so-called mainstream brethren claim to be enlighted, but when they go behind the curtain to vote they will be struggling with even entertaining the idea of pulling the lever for a black man.
ReplyDeletedo you have a camera in the voting booth. what if barack is not voted for because he is not worthy of the position. he has no experience. everything ain't about race. if you think so then why not just go live on an island because with your thinking the white man won't ever change.
Race is indeed playing a huge part, will multiculturilsm
ReplyDeletework? Or is race and ethnicity a trump card over class?
However, Obama is making the John Kerry/Mike Dukakis mistake, he's running to the middle and there's nothing there waiting for him. Increase the size of the military O man? No tough talk on the economy or on poverty? Make yourself stand out more! The Democrats run from so called liberalism and they lose every time.
McCain, an old man with cancer and no moral character, and his matey,
ReplyDeletePalin, an old Brittany Spears with harsh religious views, who won't be interviewed until the media is nice to her, are unfit to hold the office of President. I have always wanted Obama to win, but now, I am scared to death if he doesn't win, and I will work as hard as I can to make sure Obama makes it.
Field, thanks for the plug on my blog!
Lifted this from SOHH.com - a hip hop sight..
ReplyDeleteCheck it out. The New York Times is reporting today that thousands of college students in Virgina have been told that they could lose their scholarships and health insurance if they register to vote. I mean, talk about f*ckery. And they weren't told this BS by a random Republican, they were actually given this false information by the local registrars office aka the people that govern elections at the local level. Sheeezus!!!
Read the quote from the Times:
Late last month, as a voter-registration drive by supporters of Senator Barack Obama was signing up thousands of students at Virginia Tech, the local registrar of elections issued two releases incorrectly suggesting a range of dire possibilities for students who registered to vote at their college. The releases warned that such students could no longer be claimed as dependents on their parents' tax returns, a statement the Internal Revenue Service says is incorrect, and could lose scholarships or coverage under their parents' car and health insurance.
Of course, voter suppression tactics like this aren't new. Every election cheating bast*rds on both side of the isle leak false information like this to disenfranchise voters, especially new voters and voters from the inner city. One time when I was knocking doors in the hood in Milwaukee and actually was given a flyer that said that you couldn't vote if you had parking tickets. (Hell, if that were the case I would never be able to vote; for some reason the man loves giving me parking tickets. It's prolly because I'm light skinnded.) Of course, the fools that handed us the flyer didn't like that we flipped their tactics into a national news story about election rights!
At the end of the day the only reason why people do this type of stuff is because they know how powerful voting is. I know that most of ya'll get it. After all, you wouldn't spend time posting comments here if you didn't understand that there is strength in numbers. But we can't just stop with the Internet. We are really going to have to work hard if there is going to be change in this country. After all the most committed person usually wins. How committed are you? Let me know what you plan to do to make sure that your folks turn out to vote.
Gas is high becasue of speculation. And if gas is high only because more people are using it, then why has it dropped from $4.59 to $3.91 at my local Chevron? Congress is challenged to find a way to eliminate the futures speculation that has fueled the spike in gas prices. There was a flurry of discussion about this from the economists but nothing from Bush and little from Congress.
ReplyDeleteYou have to give the right credit for one thing. They stick to their talking points no matter how wildly illogical they are. Republicans had the House, the Senate, and the adminsitration for SIX FREAKING years and what do they (we) have to show for it? They had the House and the Senate for over 10 years. Who gives a damn about the policies of a president who hasn't been in office for nearly 20 years?
As much as I didn't like Bill Clinton, at least he balanced the budget and left a big fat surplus that the GOP ran through like it was chump change. Dick Cheney let energy providers write the engergy bill. Here in California, we experienced a major spike in energy costs right before Bush took office. Clinton took steps to ease the sting and as soon as Bush took office, Cheney said there was no help for California because we refuse to drill for oil and build nuclear power plants. Your fault, go away. So energy costs spiked more. Gov. Davis was recalled, then we found out that the Western energy crisis was manufactured by energy companies. Enron went belly up, and some of its corporate heads went to prison. Along with some folks from Reliant, I believe. Turns out the people who wrote our energy policies were convicted criminals.
Yes, you dumb mofos, by all means, vote for McCain. I hope you get all that you want from him and more. You like the price of gas now? Wait until McCain and his beauty queen get into office,. you will love $10 gas even more.
Is American racist? Republicans were jumping ship like rats from a burning warehouse they were so disgusted with Bush's spend, spend, spend, polices. They were sick of how Bush abandoned his so-called conservative principles by dragging us into in ill-conceived war and plunging the country deeper into debt. That is until the prospect of a black president. Now these same people are saying, not so fast. A black person in office? No way Jose. I can live with $5 gas, I can live with no job, no health care, my kids don't need to go to college, we don't need safe communities, we don't need peace in the Middle East or in India and Pakistan. Just don't saddle us with some Harvard n****r who is smarter than I am and thinks I should crawl back into the cave I crawled out of.
And let's face it, the liberal left is just so thrilled our country has come such a long way that a black man could get the nomination. But really, you don't expect me to actually vote for him for president do you?
Please, god, let the GOP win in November. I might even vote for Mc my damn self. Then they can be drawn and quartered for not only creating the downward spiral of this country's economy but their inability to stop the impending crash. It should be the Republican who are held responsible for this mess.
Vote for McCain in November and pray he keels over the next day so Miss So Very Qualifed can run this country into the ground and out the other side. Y'all deserve it.
I stated why I am a Obama supporter, you changed the subject as usual. "US oil companies are not making as much as Opec", but they are making record profits and unlike OPEC THEY ARE AMERIKKAN COMPANIES,what is your point? Believe the hype is you want rising demand is not the only factor in rising oil prices. Bush and Cheney had ties to Big Oil before they were elected, this is one of many reasons why I did not vote for them I knew the price of oil would rise. I actually research before I vote. Jimmy Carter? that was a good one can I jump off subject too and bring up a celebrity like Ronald Reagan. Once again, you still did not address the fact that in 2008 the RNC only had 36 minority candidates.
ReplyDeleteI cannot understand how someone can look at the current state of our economy, the fall of the dollar, the thousands of lives lost in unnecessary wars, the loss of our surplus, the loss the $5,000 to middle class earnings, the rise of the divide between the middle class and the rich and vote repub, hmmm.
Oh I forgot, forget the issues let's vote on personality. That Bush fellow is a likable guy, not too bright, ties to Big Oil, a C student, never been out of the US before he was president; McSame doesn't understand economics, needs to research more if you ask him an impromptu question and that Palin she's seems likable enough, went to five different colleges. Forget focusing on the issues, forget voting for someone smart enough to go to Harvard and actually studied Constitutional Law, forget Obama turned down being a highly paid lawyer to do community work, let's just make shit up, the sky is yellow.
Barack fucked over Hillary, calling her a racist (WHEN? WHAT ARTICLE?). she owes him nothing. he needs to fight his battles on his own. instead he relies on women the very people he hates ( HE HATES WOMEN?). he likes his dick sucked by white men. in the back of a limo. least the white men live. he kills the black choir directors who've sucked his dick.
lIKE I SAID THE SKY IS YELLOW AND THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE HAS NOT RISEN. four more years?
"Gas is high becasue of speculation. And if gas is high only because more people are using it, then why has it dropped from $4.59 to $3.91 at my local Chevron?"
ReplyDeleteNot so. Gas consumption has actually gone down this year. The laws of supply and demand do still have some influence on the price of gasoline. Not much, but some.
"Vote for McCain in November and pray he keels over the next day so Miss So Very Qualifed can run this country into the ground and out the other side. Y'all deserve it."
It's tempting, but no thanks. We're already close enough to the ground.
oh yeah and gas prices are high not because of rising demand, believe that shit if you want but unlike McSame I actually studied economics. funny how gas rose faster than ever after oil men Bush and cheney came to office. what is their purpose? oh to make life harder for average amerikkans and line the pockets of their friends. I think they have succeeded. Unlike Jib- I have been negatively affected in the last eight years many nights I cannot sleep because I cannot find a job, get a job, pay the bills, in the last two weeks I have had to skip a few meals to make sure my child eats but hey that Palin chick is a hottie!
ReplyDeleteAmen, west coast story! And, I get it, field: our very survival has depended on us truly knowing who we are dealing with, i.e., 'blue-collar', beer-guzzlin', _____trash americans.
ReplyDeleteOsama bin tried in/at WTC 9-11; but here we are a mere 7 years later on the verge of making it a f...ing holiday! (Damn!...Nikita Kruschev said it: "Americans are odd; they will sell you the means to their own destruction').
The sucking sound of jobs being blatantly outsourced isn't loud enough...gonna need to amp up that very american behavior.
The emergent mortgage meltdown and foreclosure fiasco...I could go on.
Your points are well taken. I think we need more jobs outsourced; we need to witness the foreclosure menace consume the homes of those very same 'hardworking, blue collar, beer guzzlin', daisy-mae americans'. Truthfully, I can't wait. Yes, it's gonna have to get mo' worse than this and the next four years. By then, those of us who would have taken to the streets in righteous rebellion will have aged and applied for social security.
It will very likely get worse than this in the next four weeks, never mind the next four years.

What a beautiful thing it would be if the real meltdown came just around the end of October.

bean... you might of took a intro to economics class however you are still wrong. Some can say gas went way up when those good ole Democrats Took over congress.
ReplyDeleteWhat is Obama going to do about fuel prices when he is not going to DRILL. I swear before you can say bi-fuels... they are already HERE in the name of E85. I dont know were you live but in PA there is E85 and in most states there is a 87 blend with 10% corn gas... Holy Shit Obama is in the pocket of the Corn Lobby! Then again you lost me when you say "OPEC are American Companies"
What dose the Fall of the dollar have to do directly with YOU? Plus when did Harvard (and the rest of the Ivy League) become a Democrat President Factory? Sarah Palin has more experance that Sen Obama and the polls are starting to show it!

Jibreel:
ReplyDeleteDo you know if we drill that the price of oil will not go down anywhere from five to ten years? Even McCain has said the same thing, it's a pyschological feel go thing to tell people to make them feel just a tiny bit better. Jib, the fact of the matter is that you are going to need alternative uses of energy because eventually the oil will run out. How do you think coal came into play in the 19th Century? Because people realized that they could not continue to use wood as energy. It's the evolution of energy resources, eventually you will have change and use another source of energy. You are figting the inevitable.
Many economists agree that speculation may have contributed to the price fluctation. The issue is by how much. the comments in response to the argrments linked below give a balanced view of how much speculation might have on oil prices.
ReplyDeleteSo there's this:

Fact sheet to debunk oil compnay bullshit sold as fact:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.oilwatchdog.org/?topicId=8059&/The+Industry
The oil comapnies themselves control the supply in order to maximize profit. And all the drilling in the world won't change that. You are being fucked hard people. Read and learn.
jibreel -- Biden done quoted some of the Federal Admin in that editorial he wrote for the Delaware press. Drilling will affect oil prices... THIRTY YEARS FROM NOW!
ReplyDeleteSo go to hell about drillin' -- your facts are wrong.
And, by the way, lay off the ol' peanut farmer. He's got more brass between his legs than this cowboy of a president. There's a reason his Economic Policy is revered by Economists. He Did What He Had To Do.
Duty, Honor, Country.
That was Jimmy -- him an Volkher broke the back of stagflation, and boy did it hurt! But it had to be done, and Jimmy took the fall for it. That's duty over pride.
Adam: I don't doubt that people have good sound reasons for voting Republican. I just feel that people in cities ought to register Democratic and vote for someone with the possibility of getting elected. Make A PRIMARY happen, folks. We got Miss Donna in this year -- whose to say you can't do a conservative next year? But, please, be practical. Ain't nobody gonna vote for someone with an R next to their name. And for the love of CHRIST, quit with the racist motherfuckers like Tinker. That's a damn fine reason to NEVER vote Republican again.
Y'all sittin' here tellin me I got nothin in common with those central PA folks? People, I grew up there. My da's from Uniontown, his folks from Leechburg, which you need teh google to find.
People on this side of the state vote with their union cards. People in the middle of the state voted disproportionately for Obama -- seems they figger he'd be an easier sell to the Republicans than Hillary -- my parents in law voted Democratic in the primary, for Obama.
There are bad apples, and my father's one of them. But, for goodness sakes! PA will go Dem!
Pittsburgh Obama office is rockin. Gonna turn out the whole city, go storm Ohio.
The reality is that I saw a photo of a Florida Repug delegate wearing an alligator hat, & in the jaws of this alligator was an effigy of Barack Obama. Everyone here know the racist jokes about "gator bait." The "gator bait" theme was one of the most common in the long tradition of racist "humor," depicted on postcards & on cheap ceramic souvenir figures sold in every roadside tourist trap below the Mason-Dixon Line.
ReplyDeleteIf one's reaction is knock the hat off & punch the guy in the nose, he's probably carrying a baseball bat he calls "Lester Maddox."
This is why Obama will lose. He lets these inbred imbeciles say anything about him and his campaign does not respond. This is what the Republicans are best at, distortions and outright lies.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.ktvu.com/politics/17423019/detail.html
What gets me is that the GOP must have forgot that community organizers also get out and get folks registered to vote, and some even give folks rides to the voting places. Republicans are trying to label community organizers troublemakers, agitators. In addition, they're saying that Obama is Urban & Urbane, he doesn't look like us--he's not white on the sly. That in itself has racial overtones. Who is playing the race card, the Republicans are and their doing it in a clever way.
ReplyDeleteCommunity organizers need to raise up a big fuss about that.
intro to economics, funny-try a little reading The Economic Report of the President whitehouse.gov or The congressional budget office cbo.gov. My life is finance, economics and accounting. I have read years 1990-2008 but with that crack about Carter maybe you should read 1970-present. Carter implemented many good policies, read the facts not the hype. Most Carter haters bring the hostage situation, you know why because Carter WAS a maverick, he did much to help the poor so of course Rethugs hate him, he did nothing for the rich.
ReplyDeleteGov. Gray Davis was blamed and impeached because of rolling blackouts (Rethugs put a CELEBRITY in his place , day 70 still no budget in Cali) many thought he was to blame, not until Enron failed did they found out that power rates were artificially being manipulated. Just like gas prices without knowledge of intro economics, many believe the lie that China and India are making the prices skyrocket. But if you actually look at the forces of the market you realize that something artificial is affecting the market because the supply and demand worldwide has not changed enough to warrant such a spike in the prices. Also you would realize that offshore drilling will not affect the market enough to change supply and demand worldwide, just a smoke screen.the oil companies have been given billions in tax credits to invest in alternative fuels and set up new offshore drilling in places they already own, how many new refineries have they opened, how many have sought alternatives, how many new offshore drills have been opened? none
Sorry to confuse you with facts, go ahead and attack me personally because I know that's all you have

Let's face it: We're worried about racism and swiftboating destroying Obama's bid for the presidency. But we need to remind ourselves that he's come this far and he's run the most brilliant campaign in American history. This is the guy that took down the Clinton Machine and raised more money than any other candidate. Already he and Ed Rendell are calling Palin and McCain out for what they are: Liars. I was shaking my fist at Rendell for most of the year, but Field, I gotta admit one thing about your governor: He's a great attack dog for the Dems.

LaDuca said Monday that he regrets posting the comments and understands how they can be construed as racist. "In hindsight, when you read it a second time, it's like, 'oops,'" he said. "It was just a dumb move on my part to make a statement like that public
risingtide:
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking up for Carter, he is a good man, and has done a lot for poor people. I liked him. People want to hold him responsible for that hostage thing, but at least he put for an effort to rescue the hostages. Bush let the hostage over in Iraq get their heads chopped off, and never attended their funeral. Therefore, Carter has my respect and I would take him any ole day over Bush, McCain, or that fabricating woman Palin.
I think more people should take up for Carter and stop letting them smear him like he is the bad guy. He gave an effort to save the lives of some Americans and that is more than I can say for Bush. At least Carter cared.
Looks like Philly's back in the news again.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you live there? Is it the weather?
Summary: On his syndicated radio show, Jim Quinn referred to the National Organization for Women as "the National Organization for Whores," and said of Philadelphia Daily News columnist Fatimah Ali: "[Y]ou know, Fatimah, what's your real name? Come on, seriously. I mean, get an American name, will you, if you want to be an American." He then asked: "You don't suppose she's a liberal black Muslim, do you?"

field,
ReplyDeleteYour exactly right, if the electorate is evenly split 50/50 between red state, blue states then this race will end up 60/40.
I think at least ten to twenty percent of democrats will be voting for McCain despite what they tell pollsters. Obama is hoping to make that difference up with woman, independents and latinos.
However, if the Bradly affect is any indicator of how this race will shake out. Then Obama's black ass is at the mercy of "White Folk's"...not a good place to be.
Let's pray,[Gov Palin is]that white folks come to their good senses before november, or that John McCain fall's on his rusty ass sword.
We can do that can't we...?
Field, I hope to GOD you are wrong!!
ReplyDeleteHow about some commentary on how Prez Bush is carrying out the policy that Obama has been advocating for months and that Mc has opposed? Pulling troops out of Iraq and redeploying them to Afghanistan. Glad to see Bush taking Obama's (he's not ready to lead) advice.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I was looking at some polls and indeed Obama has the electoral advantage. You can win the popular vote and lose the election.
GrannyStandingforTruth:
ReplyDeleteThough I am a (liberal) Republican, I agree with you that Carter was good president. I probably would have voted for him if I was old enough at the time. I believe he was honest and decent. Joe Biden actually reminds me a little of Carter.
Palin's economic gaffe. Add this to the lies about selling a plane on e-bay, and not supporting the bridge to nowhere. But her best lie is about earmarking. Mc said he will go after pork. Does that include all the pork that went to Alaska? Alaska receives more pork per capital than any other state. Alaska is the closest thing to a welfare state that we have.
