The picture that goes along with this post (I know, I have been into images a lot lately) along with others with it , have been generating quite a bit of buzz among certain parts of the bloggosphere. Seeing and reading different people's take on it has been interesting to say the least. Hey, I am not here to preach, just to observe and read tonight. I get the subliminal racist Mandingo buck raping Missy imagery. And the not too subtle sexually charged messages that feed into our stereotypes of the black male.
I get all of that. But what I really want to know is this: In this "post- racial" world where it's supposedly cool to bet on black, and where we are told that generation Xers and those who came after them really don't see race. Who do you think these pictures would piss off more?
There is no wrong answer.
A. The crowd at a black sorority convention? (Where my pink & greens at?)
B. The aging congregation of a large, black, Southern Baptist church?
C. The aging congregation of a large, white, Southern church?
D. The crowd at a republican town- hall meeting? (Any town)
E. None of the above.
Please hurry with your comments. I am trying to get off of this page as soon as possible. Mrs. field doesn't know how to act when she sees "cut" brothers. I can't chance her walking by and seeing this pic.

I don't know if it's racsit or not because the photos are so stunning. Actually, I don't think the photos are racist. I think they are racial but I don't see racism. They are certainly sexually provocative. If someone has issues with interracial partnering, I can see where the hysteria comes from. I don't so I don't care.
I see some really great use of light and a camera.
So sue me.

What is the context for the image? A protect our “Missy” rally or just some high end fashion photographer wanting to tap into our collective id with a study in contrast.
I look at this image and see the lighting, the body, the texture, the subtle and not so subtle hetero and homo erotic elements, and I ask myself how much time do these guys spend in the gym?

Nice try, chalking this up to "contrast" in making B&W photography. As someone who admires B&W photography, I think that true professionals would never go for such a "cheap" and tired trick as white skin on dark. That is pretty easy to pull off, and involves very little nuance or talent at all.
ReplyDeleteNo, the point of these images was to shock. These are not even "subliminal," but a fairly blatant attempt at invoking certain historical themes. (And actually, they are not scenes of "rape" necessarily, as the men are pretty subservient to the woman--literally emasculated since their own genitals are absent.) The problem is--it has been done before, so there is really nothing that cutting-edge about this kind of thing.
After seeing the other pictures, i think they are sexy. Those black brothers can hurt a sister. sigh. now i just want to know what Gisele thinks she can do with those black brothers. She cant handle what they are dishing out. lol. pass them over this way.

Art is in the eyes of the beholder and I think this picture is a beautiful piece of photographic black and white art. If that was a black woman they were holding we would see it as what I think the photographer intended to be ART.

I actually don't see the rape fantasy in this one. I agree with whomever said the brothers looked like eunuchs. Personally, I have a bigger problem with "urban" radio than I do with this photo. Pix like these are just old hat. But to answer your question, I'd definitely go with the black sorority convention. ReplyDeleteSomeone alluded to this earlier, but its interesting that none of the choices included the crowd at a black fraternity convention or the crowd at Morehouse's orientation. The saddest part about this is that black men don't care about their portrayel as a "Mandingo buck raping Missy". In fact, I think many of them revel in it. I can't think of another group that would allow themselves to be so grossly mischaracterized and allow it to continue to go unchallenged. And lets be real, this photograph is not about the color contrast. If it was, there would be no need for these men to be completely nude. The same color affect could have been achieved by dressing the men in briefs and allowing them to maintain at least some of their dignity.

I took issue with this picture because it does have this "Birth of a Nation," black brute desiring the white mistress feel. SOME of the other photos I saw from the shoot I felt didn't push the racial envelope.

ReplyDeleteI see different areas of contrast in the photo such as masculine/feminine, dark/light, strong/weak. I am also getting a contrast of feelings and emotions between myself and the models in the photo. I had a visceral feeling of repulsion viewing those photos because of the play on the myth of the Mandingo black male brute and the innocent white women being seduced. I think that was the photographer's intention, to constrast some of our visceral reactions to the calm serene emotions of the models.
I'm curious as to what reaction folks would have if that was a black woman with white men.

Now to the picture. The image that comes to mind for me is that the woman is being carried as though she's a bale of cotton or a bale of hay.
These are working men with working men bodies, not appearing to be interested in getting down with anyone at the moment.
They almost seem burdened by their load, wishing to get it where it has to go in one piece, but not particularly interested in it beyond that.
She's suited while the men appear nude, and although her arms reach backward to embrace the brothers' shoulders for support, she doesn't seem all that sexually aroused herself, but exhibits a measure of disinterest in both the act and her possible destination.
If there's a message here, it could possibly be this: neither white women nor black men are as sexually attracted to the other as stereotypes would have it.
Black men have to bear the burden of the jungle-fever myth to the same extent that white women are constrained to ignore it.
High fashion photography at its best.

I'd agree with some of the others above, the photography, lighting, staging is superb. The artist who took the picture sure knew what they were doing, because the picture says so much:
1. The Black buck thing that you hinted at.
2. The (stereotyped) desire of White womem wanting to be ravaged or worshipped by an army of ripped Black men (not saying its real, just pointing out the stereotype)
3. This particular woman (regardless of color) wanting an army of men basically worshipping her
4. Black physicality

Here's a critical question: Who took the picture? Once you know the background of the photographer who took the picture, then you can make an inference on the photographer's intended message (assuming there is one).
Anyone with an ounce of brains do not ASSume before having facts.
If you don't know who took the picture, the only opinion to which you are entitled is the grade of the picture. I agree with Chris, it's high-grade photography.

It's just going to be one of those pictures that pisses everyone off at black men. Black women are going to be mad that you even look at another women since they feel as though they are the only one's desreving of you attention; nevermind you're a man and just likes whatever woman looks good to you period. The aging church folks are either older black women who look down on you because you're not looking at their daughters that have more problems than Ann Coulter, and the old black men get jealous because you actually may be able to get a white girl like they always wanted when they were younger. ReplyDeleteBecause of our history we can never see these images with an unbiased eye...which makes me wonder about the background of the photographer. This is going to sound harsh but...the older the photographer of this pic is...the more likely I would call race baiting. If the photographer is a 50 year old straight WM, I would say, hmmmmmm
It is said often that gay men take the best photographs of women. Yet one of the kings of black and white nudes Robert Mapplethorpe always seemed to take much more beautiful photographs of men...in particulare black men which he is said to have had a preference for in his intimate relationships.
Currently I don't know of anyone doing beautiful artful erotic photos of black women ...except maybe Uwe Ommer and a French photographer I can't think of at the moment. Yet these guys do "pretty" pictures of black women which is nice but they are not memorable.
But black and white photos...particularly those of contrasting dark and white skin can be quite compelling. I know is it simple but still striking. Helmut Newton's "White Women" is still selling some 30 years later.
In choosing a caption...I would go with FN's letter F regarding a New York cocktail party and say.

I will alter my views when I see a picture (contrasted of course) of a Black female being held up in that way by 4-5 naked white muscular males. Been reading and digesting Americanna for 50 plus years and I have seen this image (that picture) too many times. You would have thunk I would have seen one with a Black female. For the contrast, don't need the sister to be Beyounce'-like. Now this is my take...I am a sum product of being in this society thru different social times and this image is sooo used-up. All things are possible (remember Brother Obama), so I may see this picture in reverse before I check out.

The last white man I dated had a was 6'3" tall, slim, had PhD in Engineering, a BMW, a nice home in a great neighborhood, blond hair, and the bluest eyes you'd ever seen. And we went out in public too and brotha's like you, often with white women on their arms, gave me a HARD time, LOL!!!

There are a lot of rings in the photographs, and I wonder if the first photo of the face and hands isn't representative of a ring.
ReplyDeleteIt also looks like the model is staring at a ring in one of the photos as if she has won a prize. Another photo, where the female model has her legs around the neck and shoulders of the male model, she has a very odd expressions on her face, she sort of looks like a mime or court jester, not sure.
I don't know who would be the most pissed off, but I would expect that the crowd at the Manhattan cocktail party would be the most likely to buy those photos. How about all of the above, I didn't see that one.

ReplyDeleteMen of any race need to learn not just how to treat a woman, but how to become the man she deserves. It has little to do with looks (even though I get jitterty when Mrs. Whitey looks at pics like these) and more to do with who we as men are.
As soon as I realized Mrs. Whitey was serious about me I was nervous. Nervous because I wasnt sure I could be the kind of man she would demand. Had to do with honesty, seriousness, growth, courage and making sure her dreams were more important than mine.

I reached in the baby's mouth and pulled some of the paper out but fast as I oould snatch it out of the baby's mouth. While still trying to pulled the rest of the paper out, I remember thinking to myself, "Why in the world is this baby intent on putting something in its mouth that is harmful to it."
The baby was constantly trying to eat bad news and choking on it. I was trying my best to save the baby from choking, but the baby was stubborn even though the contents of bad news was deadly to it's own well-being.

ReplyDeleteThe photos are nice. I don't see it as racist. I've looked at all of the photos and I think the photos are meant to be provocative, especially after the King Kong Vogue cover. Now that was racist or at least racially insensitive, I don't give a damn what anyone says. Maybe this was the photographers attempt at systematic desensitization or exposure therapy. In other words "get over it".
I think some would still have a reaction if it were a black woman being held by white men because of the history of black female slaves being raped by white men. But I don't think the reaction would be nearly as strong.

And nothing "happened", my husband and I are friends with him, our kids go to school together and we live in the same neighborhoos. I simply chose a 6'3" Chocolate Brother with a Master's in Engineering instead of a PhD. However, notice that I didn't alter my standards one bit as so many Black men do when the marry a white sec'y in the office passing over the collegue sistah with the law degree, roll eyes!

It is all in the eye of the beholder. People see different things through different lenses, just like reading they have different takes on what they've read. I remember a picture of what looked like a young woman, but if you did a double take and looked at the picture again, it also, was an older woman. Some only saw the young woman, some only saw the older woman, and some saw both of them. So, it depends on the eye of the beholder (whose eyes something is being seen through. It depends on a person's perception of things.

I served in the Army. ETS'd 2008. You have more roughewn-looking women then pretty women in the Army. Air Force has the prettiest women.
