Poor Philly, we have really been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately. First the swimming pool fiasco, and now this. Pretty soon people are going to say that we are a racist city........*pause; pause; and type* the Boston/Birmingham of the 21st century. That's not good.
And another thing that's not good is that people who are supposed to be putting their lives on the line for each other (not to mention us) can't really trust each other because of the alleged atmosphere of racism in the department. (Oh field, stop it, the Police Chief is black for crying out loud, what else do you people want? ) Honestly, I don't care what color the police chief is. Black, white,green, yellow, red, or whatever. He should not tolerate the alleged incidents of racism that we heard about in his department.
It shouldn't have gotten to this point, but now that it has, let's hope that Philly's finest get to the bottom of this, and fast.

The simple class system might have been prevalent in various places around the world, including Europe before those haunting voyages to raid Africa - which now brought on the new discriminating appraisal system we now know so well as race. It doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. Ask all the black people around the world who live in poverty while living among non-blacks who just happen to be the 'haves'. Try the American ghettos, try the Brazilian Favelas etc.

ReplyDeleteIt annoys me to no end to see how mixed-race people believe they've transended above and beyond the whole race issue. There aren't gonna be any winners in the contest between Whites and Blacks for genuine racial equality. Whites can't get over the fact that a people they've always seen as "inferior" can, will and are succeeding right before their eyes, and Blacks want to not only fight amongst one another, but then pin every single problem in the Black community on Whites while doing zero introspection whatsoever. We have a lot of work ahead of us that needs to be done, before things turn genuinely ugly.
And for that, we should turn to the various "conservatives" and Republican figures who are clamoring for a race war between Whites and Blacks. I can only assume that this will give rise to excuses for "restoring order to the inner cities" by "controlling the undesirable element". Any bets on how exactly the "Black problem" is gonna get "solved"?
The reason we point that out is as a children we were beat up by blacks and hounded by whites.

Thanks for this Field. Reading your post made me check the site out and write up my thoughts. Here's my thought process, but before, let me tell the trolls something. Yo ASSume too much. If you go around this blog, you will see that we DESPISE these thugs, more than you do. I know it's difficult for you to see that black people are not the trash you assume we are, but whether you wake up out of your stupor or not, it's true.

ReplyDeleteI hear ya. It's too bad that Blacks are like that. But keep in mind that quite a few Blacks are racists themselves. It's one of the reasons Blacks will never be able to unify as a race against racism. Ironically, they are outraged about racism against Blacks in this country, but remain racists themselves. So you are not the only one some blacks find fault with because of the color of your skin, eyes, features, or hair.
There are black women who find fault not only with black men who date outside of their race, but they find fault with black women who are brown to light complexion. Their attitude is, 'if you aren't dark skin, you are the enemy'. Some have formed support groups to help recruit and isolate themselves into a little black niche of sort.
The black race is fractured into numerous shards of prejudice, self-hatred, and hatred of each other, that it is clearly visible to the most casual observer! So, don't feel alone, you have a lot of company. But always remember, that it's THEIR problem, not yours.

I am still amazed that some Philadelphians consider the men in blue "Philly's finest." The white officers are as racist as the members of the Valley Swim Club.
Has the black Chief of Police been rendered powerless by the city to do anything about it? Or, is the Chief of Police an uncle tom?

ReplyDeleteThe Cincinnati PD has a pretty good track record for racism. The Chief Tom Streicher, once refered to one of his Sargents as a N-word. His justification was. He was using him as an example for what he might have to face on the streets. The former FOP president Keith Fangman has also used racial slurs against Blacks and Hispanics. Lets not forget Stephen Roach the cop who was accused but not prosecuted for shooting an unarmed man(Timothy Thomas) setting off the riots in 2001. IMO all PD's have some covert racism that eventually surfaces. That's why I dont trust themas far as I can spit on them.

Everyone seems to forget that the police department is a runoff of the slave patrollers back during slavery. Of course, they are going to be racist in every department. ReplyDeleteYou know, Anon, I've been around for years. I've seen blacks so white that they could've passed had they chose to.
And I might add: the communities in which I lived saw them as black, and nothing else.
I can't speak to your individual experience, but I don't see the likes of Hally Berry, or any lighter skin black receiving the kind of treatment from the fam that you say you're receiving.
I've got to ask: Where in these United States do you venture? In what cities, and what communities, are you hearing these remarks?
My sister lived in the ghetto for years, and they don't come no more high-yellow than she, and she never received this kind of treatment at the hands of her black people.
Again, I have to ask: If you're as you say you are, perhaps the fault lies within you--how are you presenting yourself (hopefully, not better than thou) as you move among us?

ReplyDeleteBTW, my dad was one of those blacks that could pass for white, and he did when it was beneficial to family. Not one black person ever treated him bad or different from any other black person, in his lifetime and he was well-liked by black people. My mother was dark-skinned.

Anony 2:46 am, be assured there are "light" skinned and black biracial people who actually think they're some sort of victims of the black community. I also agree with BD and Granny.
ReplyDeleteAnony 4:50 AM, I realize my previous insomnia suffering rant may seem anti biracial, but I'm not. While I am not trying to negate your life experience (considering the age group and location), I don't think your experience has anymore damaging effects over the ones of the average dark-skinned Afrocentric looking black people who were taunted with derogatory names by other black people (slave descendants) in the black communities.
I think most honest black people today might find your life experience an exception. Black people and the black comm. have always accepted black biracials more than any other racial group in history. It also appears that from our oppressed/damaged history, even among each other today, it seems socially beneficial to appear to have a drop of something other, than to appear "untouched - straight of Africa". Therefore, your claim does seem hyper sensitive, or even suspicious.
My father is also biracial, but he has never been anything other than an average looking light skinned black man to other black people. He rarely talks about race, but he sees himself as a black person, nothing better over other blacks and nothing less. He never looked for any kind of special treatment, so if a derogatory name were to be called, I doubt there would be such disappointing feelings as you experienced. When I was a little girl, the only thing odd I've heard black people call him was "Dane man". It didn't appear to be derogatory, because black men around my area would test each other, talk jive, laugh, call each other names and give each other the hand moves afterwards.
Anony, I have a feeling there is a deeper issue going on with you, which has nothing to do with the names black people may have called you. I think you need to be up front and honest with yourself first and foremost.

ReplyDeleteAnon, I don't doubt your experience. There are other Blacks who have had similar experiences to yours- It doesn't mean that it happens to everyone but it DOES happen to people within and without the Black Community. I have seen it, and heard it so I know it happens.

Some things are just generational and regional. Like when part of your life, the one drop rule is enforced or Jack and Jill in some regions were a cornucopia of Black folks and at others, you had to take their word that they were.
