Torturing the faithful.

*
It's stories like this that's got my love meter for his O ness dipping:

"Jan. 7 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Reserve Bank of New York, then led by Timothy Geithner, told American International Group Inc. to withhold details from the public about the bailed-out insurer’s payments to banks during the depths of the financial crisis, e-mails between the company and its regulator show. AIG said in a draft of a regulatory filing that the insurer paid banks, which included Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Societe Generale SA, 100 cents on the dollar for credit-default swaps they bought from the firm. The New York Fed crossed out the reference, according to the e-mails, and AIG excluded the language when the filing was made public on Dec. 24, 2008. The e-mails were obtained by Representative Darrell Issa, ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee..." [More here]

Let's call it the "Chinese water torture" effect. Drip. Drip. Drip. My dome is starting to feel wet.

"President Obama wants the final negotiations on health care reform - a reconciliation of the House and Senate versions of the bill - put on a fast track, even if that means breaking an explicit campaign promise. "The House and Senate plan to put together the final health care reform bill behind closed doors according to an agreement by top Democrats," House Speaker Nanci Pelosi said today at the White House. The White House is on board with that, too, reports CBS News political correspondent Chip Reid. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs stressed today that "the president wants to get a bill to his desk as quickly as possible." Special Report: Health Care Reform During the campaign, though, candidate Obama regularly promised something different - to broadcast all such negotiations on C-SPAN, putting the entire process of pounding out health care reform out in the open. (That promise applied to the now-completed processing of forging House and Senate bills, too.) Back when Republicans controlled Congress and George W. Bush was in the White House, it was Democrats who angrily complained about secret backroom deals. Now the roles are reversed..." [Story here]

I know a lot of people don't watch C-SPAN, but just an hour on that network is not enough. His O ness promised me transparency and that's what I want.

But field, it's not only Obama, congressional dumbocrats are the real reason that these deals are being done in secret, The president does not have any control over the process.

That may or may not be true. I am not as up on the inner workings of Washington like some folks, so I can't say for sure. But what I can say is that White House sure isn't pushing for wall to wall coverage on C-SPAN. I am sorry, I must be missing something, but what the hell do these lawmakers think will happen if folks see how the "sausage is being made"? This is A-merry-ca, damn it! I didn't like secrecy with the frat boy, and having my man in the beige house doesn't change how I feel about that.

Oh, and before I go, I want to thank Glen Beck for finally settling this little name issue for us black folks. Apparently he doesn't like the term African American, either.

"African-American is a bogus, PC, made-up term. I mean, that's not a race"

Obama, my love meter for you just went back up a few notches. Why? Because " The enemy of my enemy is my friend. "

  1. Obama lost me when he embraced Ronald Reagan's trickle down economics theory for African Americans.

So at this point there is really nothing that Obama can really do to disappoint me any further.

I think I'll be staying home on Election Day in 2012.

Oddly, I am experiencing a situation regarding my perspective of Micheal Steele.

I thought the man was a boot licking Tom for sure. But the more I observe him, the more I abandon that notion.

Yeah, he's an arrogant asshole. But I like the way he told some Republicans, today, to shut up and get out of the way.

So, "Whitey-Rightey" believes African-American is a PC term, huh? I guess they prefer the non-PC term of "nigger."

Seeing how the "sausage is begin made" has driven down support for the bill. The Dems know that any more public sausage making will bring the Health Care Bill to defeat.
So they are going to go behind closed doors and come out and pass a waterdown bill all while smiling and claiming victory.
This is what happen when you let Rethugs play you like a string for almost a year all while knowing not one Rethug will vote for the bill.

    I am watching you man.
I see how the gravity of reality is forcing you to cease from your total praise of the Federal Democrats.

I will NOT allow you to disaggregate this MACHINE. From a government structural standpoint - indeed the Executive Branch and the Legislative Branch is separate as you suggest.

From a MACHINE CONTROL standpoint THEY ARE FUSED!!!!

For the average Black person in America we must also note that this MACHINE extends down to their LOCAL GOVERNMENT.

In Chicago this is a trifecta. The LOCAL, the STATE and the FEDERAL government is controlled by this same MACHINE.

Even if I buy your claim that Obama's campaign promises do not have any bearing on what the Legislative Democrats ultimately do. You fail to note that the WHITE HOUSE will have an operative in on the meetings to coordinate the outcome which Obama will eventually sign.

Just like "Public Campaign Financing", Filled Negro - these bedrock progressive issues are ONLY enforced by progressive-fundamentalist operatives like you when YOUR ADVERSARIES have the advantage that they are seeking to roll over YOU with.

With Public Financing you went along with the forebearance in the enforcement for 2008 because Obama had boatloads of cash coming in and this is what you FAVORED.

On this Health Care negotiation - you are not going to do anything to ding Obama and the Federal Democrats as they stand down on their TRANSPARENCY promises.

    Fine Frog:

Can you not only DEFINE your enemy but also DETAIL the attributes of them which bring them to light as your enemy?

    My primary enemy is:

    * Those who KILL Black people and violate our community safety

    * Those who suppress EDUCATION from our children

    * Those who functionally firebomb our BUSINESSES, driving them out of business and thus suppress the local economy

    * Those who's actions and moral guidance leave us infected and results in an early death.

Thus Fine Frog - as conservative operatives such as Beck DEPART from the same living space as the African-American as people you favor run the board I find it hard to understand how you focus on your ideological ENEMY but not WHO HAS CONTROL OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS.

Could it be that you are an ideological bigot?

Do you find it strange that Michael Steele who has NO PUBLICALLY ELECTED POSITION and no traction within the Black community has gotten MORE COVERAGE from the Black Progressive-Fundamentalist blogs in 2009 and 2010 than THE ENTIRE BODY known as the Congressional Black Democrat Caucus?

How does this ONE MAN have so much POWER?

Shall all folks of oriental descent be called Asian-Americans? Am *I* a Polish-American because my parents were born there? Or am I a Jewish-American because of their religion (the one their families were slaughtered because)?. Folks who want to be called a hyphenated-American should expect those who consider themselves UNhyphenated to regard them as prissy and unpatriotic. I love my black friends...but they're as "African" as I am.

@Field: So i take it you would rather been known as black. I have looked on the map and i have tried to find this mysterious country/continant named, Black where people of black American/Carribean decent came from. I can't see it anywhere. If you can find it and point it out to me, i would be most grateful.

America is a nation of IMMIGRANTS!.

Due to the highly unfortunate situation regarding slavery, Africans from the continant were stripped of their heritage, so it is it is going to be difficult for people to discover which part of the continant their ancestors came from. This is why i think the term African-American, is used to describe black people in America.

Every other race of people(s) in America are proud of their racial identify, roots and their heritage. And why shouldn't they. There is nothing PC about wanting to do that.

This is why when they look at themselves in the mirror each morning, afternoon and evening, they are able to recodnise the face stairing back them. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about us pesky blacks. We are too busy trying to be something we are not.

If their was a way in which the African element within our gene pool could be removed, then those blacks of so called African decent who want nothing what so ever to do with their African side, should be left to wallow in their Scottish,Irish,English,Greek or Asian side of their genetic make up.

It would have been great to hear those same people telling us what an "Obama Victory would mean for BLACK FOLKS" (Go pick up the July 2008 or August edition of Ebony Magazine and note what they said).

It seems to me that there is a force among us that prefers to have Black people:

    * EMOTIONALLY INSPIRED by their friends - looking past the PAST FAILURES by noting the POSSIBILITIES if they were to take even more ground.

Can "Lil Wayne" say anything that is directly focused at Black Females which insults them that could trigger the same reaction?

What if Rush Limbaugh and Lil Wayne own the exact same brand "Studio Mic" into which they speak? What makes the sound waves captured by Limbaugh's mike SUPERIOR to those produced by Lil Wayne's vocal chord?

OR do you need me to go and find the lyrics to "A Milli" and post them here?

Do you see that I have noticed that the bigger indictment against PEOPLE LIKE YOU is NOT who you focus upon with your angst. Instead it is the people who violate you in the same way and yet your PROTECTION/IGNORING of them that show your true colors.

Clearly it is not the work "N" and related imagery that is disturbing to you. Your POLITICAL agenda trumps everything else and thus you are more inclined to build up a STRAW MAN as to what Beck MIGHT DO than you have any intention to look at the ABUNDANCE of works from people who call you this name in COMMERCIAL SPEECH and yet you ignore them.

More Black people hear Lil Wayne call them "N's" in one album release than even listen to Glen Beck in a one year"s time>

  31. Re Geithner: who do you realistically think could take over and do better? Not Volker, he wouldn’t be able to; he was tops 30 years ago, not now.

The (a) reason for not revealing AIG payments now is by request from all the European Governments whose banks were saved by the AIG payments their banks were contractually entitled to. France, Germany, Switzerland, and others could not have stepped up any more. Britain is overstretched from what they had to do. Iceland is talking about defaulting on their debt. Dubai just had to be rescued. Things are still bad around the world.

A lot of people here don’t remember, or never understood just how bad things were. I watched Paulson closely. His face, his eyes, showed real fear. That’s what the saner congress critters saw – and heard – behind closed doors mostly. Notice how Bush never said a word nor did he take a farewell triumphal tour. He all but slunk out of town.

And middle America would go full bore teabagger if they thought their money, the money Reagan told them was theirs, and that they could spend it much better than the government could, would be crazy with rage that their money which could have bought another bigger TV went to those damn furriners.

Something just occurred to me. I saw lots of pictures of lots of teabagger parties, with lots of signs, but I never saw or heard of any signs about having lost their home or being foreclosed. These aren’t the people who have really suffered. There were no signs about needing health care, or food, or even work.

Every damn politician has said he would do things he found out he couldn't. Yet I don't recall anyone seriously holding Bush (no nation building, compassionate conservative, fiscal responsibility, reform social security) or Clinton (health care), Bush I (no new tax) Reagan (no new taxes, then he raised them 6 times).
Carter ran as a complete outsider which he was, hired his GA friends as COS and other positions and was unable to get much done because he didn't know some unfortunate realities.

Remember that prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr, someone Obama has been heavily influenced by :

    God, grant me the serenity
    To accept the things I cannot change;
    The courage to change the things that I can;
And the wisdom to know the difference.

I also wish people would quit talking about how Democrats have control since we have 60 in the Senate. Dems have 58, some are quite conservative (corporatophiles and totally self-centered). We have two independents, one of whom is to the left of all of them and one who is a supreme narcissist with corporatophile tendencies and meaner than a junkyard dog.

The Lieberman himself suggested expanding Medicare last month; at the end he said he would not accept it at all. He said the bill would cost too much, which was absurd and he knew it. He was just looking for an excuse to kill it. He purely hates Obama. And he is killing Obama – with the
    "Progressives."

I guess every politician should say "I will do thus and so, God and the Congress willing" after every sentence. Obama should have said "These are my dreams, I'll try."

Then you could whine about President McCain who would end employer group insurance and everyone gets $5k voucher to buy on the wide open market.

It’s not a great bill but it will establish a right to health care for all Americans. So it is a necessary first step.

The Republicans thought they could break Obama and thus the Democrats, on this health care reform. Passing something, even if not just what we want, may break some of them. Not loosing much in 2010 will knock them back. Nah, the Dems will all stay home feeling self righteous and betrayed.

When HCR gets passed a lot of benefits start up soon. That will help. But Democrats who want "their way" seem to enjoy having a grievance, they have an emotional range from furious to merely pissed off.

Do you realize how fantastic it is to have gotten anything through? (knock wood…)

  34. To answer your question CF, the reason Media Matters isn't chasing after Hip-Hop artists (or any other pop stars) is the same reason that they're not going after Video Games -- its in their scope of concern.

Media Matters exists to point out the misconceptions, lies and outright foolishness espoused by the business elites, politicians and the pundit class (Beck, Limbaugh, Olbermann). Going after rappers would not make sense for them.

As to this post, Field like I've said before -- too many lefties were expected Obama to Jesus and magically change the world in a year. And, we bitch a lot, but we're all that big on acting.

Real change requires real sacrifice. What if Obama did push through a single payer healthcare system that we all pine about on this blog? How many of us would be talking the same mau-mau rhetoric after having to wait 3 months for minor foot surgery? Or the fact that taxes will temporarily spike to make this happen? Or that there may be a lot of unemployed medical coders and nurses working cushy jobs at HMOs? Or that guys like me, healthcare IT geeks may need to take a slightly lower salary or find different work because of the market shape up?

Now granted, I support single payer healthcare, but as a IT systems engineer, I fully understand what will and could happen post implementation. And I'm willing to take on those 'light burdens' for the great good. A lot of people screaming for this type of change are no different than the tea baggers, they don't calculate the risk or ramifications of their ideas.

And lets not get on the Anti-War types -- who want to bolt from Afghanistan (again I agree) but will be the first one starting benefit concerts once the Taliban start beheading little girls for reading on You-Tube.

It's easy to scream change, but it becomes another matter once that change happens.

That's the primary reason why guys like Nader and Ron Paul are ignored -- they're not proposing to 'baby you' politically, they're giving harsh political realities and will require great sacrifice on our part. And often, those guys aren't even up front on the type of rather abrupt changes that would occur if they got into office. Do you think 30-something would really want a guy like Nader policing their Xbox 360? Or, how many anti-war folks and moderate Repubs would still support Ron Paul after he eliminates tax benefits for marriage and children, private social services and eliminate the student loan programs?

Trust me, the Right and the Left would probably burn either of those guys in effigy on the White House, if not just straight shoot them, if they ever go into the Big Chair.

Those two factors -- deification of Obama by many of the left (and making him the anti-Christ on the Right and Far Left) and the fact that most Americans don't have stomach for sacrifice and discipline means that no matter what Obama wants to do, political realities will continue to smack him sideways.

In my demodratic paper today,3 pages deep.

Advocacy groups lobbied President Barack Obama and Congress on Thursday, trying to eliminate what they called a "loophole" in Senate health care legislation they said could allow insurers to raise rates on customers based on their weight or blood sugar levels

only one scoop of gravy please!

    and

In a meeting at the White House, Obama expressed his preference for the insurance tax contained in the Senate's health overhaul bill, but largely opposed by House Democrats and organized labor, Democratic aides said.

i never expected any instant change

ANY change for the poor/black would suffice...

    yet
obama made instant changes exclusively for rabid elitist crooks...and he is still doing so instantly each day

    unlike millions of racist enablers,
i will never ignore this because he is half black....

  43. I supported the bailouts. Trust me, not because I love the banks but because I thought it was either bailouts or 1933 all over again.

So I don't fault Obama for the bailouts. I always knew they'd be ugly, and that it would be about as comfortable as swallowing a razor blade. What I do fault him for is the following:

    1. Not prosecuting some of the thieves. If I were emperor, those prosecutions would include the death penalty, but in the United States circa 2010, a decade in prison, forfeiture of everything you own, and a permanent ban on employment in any finance capacity would do it.

    2. Failing to put it in context for the public. He should have been very direct: "We're doing this not because we want to, but because we have to." Followed by release of extensive details of exactly what happened and exactly who was at fault, line by line.

By not doing #1 and #2, Obama has made it far less likely that he'll be able to get the sort of regulatory authority to prevent the same thing from happening all over again.

  44.
the reason Media Matters isn't chasing after Hip-Hop artists (or any other pop stars) is the same reason that they're not going after Video Games -- its in their scope of concern.

Media Matters exists to point out the misconceptions, lies and outright foolishness espoused by the business elites, politicians and the pundit class (Beck, Limbaugh, Olbermann). Going after rappers would not make sense for them.
L.A.C.:

If you are going to make a claim PLEASE do the proper QUALIFICATION of your comments.

If you said: "Media Matters exists to point out the misconceptions, lies and outright foolishness espoused by the business elites, politicians and the pundit class".....of their IDEOLOGICAL ENEMIES, namely RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVES - I would have no problem at all with your assessment.

Where I get stuck is when I see people who PURPORT TO be the champions of the "Black" and/or "Working Class" communities make reference to "Media Matters", "Democracy Now", "MSNBC", "Huffington Post" and "DailyKOS" as the bible for their cause. In their world THESE are voices of non-biased valor.

And of course everyone on "Fox News", "Wall Street Journal opinion page" and every other breathing mammal to the right of Nancy Pelosi are RACISTS!!!!

You see L.A.C. the REAL reason why Media Matters does not focus on "Hip Hip - The Voice Of The Street Pirate" is because they are not a THREAT in the domain of their focus - the political fight with the CONSERVATIVES.

Surely you see Hip Hip artists being recruit to get the "young Black vote" out to the polls to vote for the DEMOCRATS. Whereas one Young Jeezy album contains more verbal assaults upon Black people than the last 15 years of Rush Limbuagh - for some reason Media Matters - AND YOU - are able to look past these gross "sins" and welcome these operatives in per the perverted notion of "An enemy of my enemy is my friend".

Sadly these "Ideological and Political Friends" are vocalizing their post experiences in dealing drugs and murdering Black people who "step to them".

Thus an IDEOLOGICAL enemy is said to do more "harm" to Black people because he fails to "share" the "national resources" with Progressive Blacks who are quasi-socialist in their leanings.

Those who are doing material assaults and making commercial speech about their exploits are NOT see as a "threat". Instead we are told that they act in this manner due to the RACISM that keeps them confined to the ghetto environments......that the Democrats just happen to control but suffer no blame for the conditions within.

L.A.C. do you see the fraudulent basis for your ideology? YOUR FIX for the ghetto involves having the NATIONAL GOVERNMENT take over and destroy the places where your adversary hides his wealth as you "share them" more equitably (to your liking). This enables you to place the bogie away from the question of your own competency in managing the areas that you are most dominate. Instead you are judged by how far you PROGRESS in your national takeover.

As long as your enemy is still breathing there is MORE WORK FOR YOU TO DO.

I choose to judge you by how much COMPETENCY is build up among the "rank and file" as your power over them grows. Instead you are an expert at growing GOVERNMENT POWER with the people being SERVICED by this government.

i DO fault obama because his bailouts were ONLY candy for bankers with no real deals/jobs/loans....for anyone poor!

thus, even his bailouts were jokers just as he is

    ie

those bankers have given no loans/saved no homes/squandered and stashed and spent etc...

    who was bailed out???
    who is hopeless now???
    where is any change???

Field, I totally agree with this post, and would like to add some REAL INSIGHT to it. I recognize Obama inherited a gigantic disaster from eight years of Republican screwups. I didn't vote for Obama because I believed the "MAGIC NEGRO" would spinkle some foo-foo dust on the problems and make them all disappear.

HOWEVER, I did vote for the only person that I felt would be able to manage the situation and eventually get the nation on a secure footing. I have been greatly disappointed in the people that Obama chose to surround himself with. There are a few good pick, but overall he has loaded up his cabinet and advisors with Democratic Washington beltway bureaucrats. The professional lives of these people has been spent holding down a desk as the MIC of come governmental agency. So it is obvious that at the end of Obama's first year so much remains to be done. Look Bush put the SS AMERICA up on top of a huge iceberg. Obama's immediate job was to keep it from sinking dep into the ocean. However, if Obama had wisely picked the right people to staff his White House the ship would be still listing but it would be underway sailing for some rescue port. As recent event are starting to indicate this political baggage, like rooten eggs are beginning to smell up the White House. Janet Napolitano, Tim Geithner, who's next? This is the first of my criticisms of Obama.

My next criticism of Obama I find apalling. Goerge Bush organized the Department Of Home Land Security the same way that he would organized the cowboys on his texas ranch.

Under the Bush organization, The Dept. of Home Land Security is in charge of the 7 following major government functions:U.S. Coast Guard, FEMA. Secret Service, ICE, TSA, U.S. Customs & Border Protection, and U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Service. There are many other critical functions that are not in this list like the Director of Intellegence who is an under Secretary in the Department. I had a very wise boss who told me many years ago, that as a supervisor or manager, it you have MORE than 6 people reporting to you, you are not doing your job. In the present organization of Home Land Security Napolitano has many more than 6 people reporting to her, not to mention the Director of National Intelligence. One of the chief complaints documented in the 9/11 was the lack of communication between the CIA and the FBI called "STOVEPIPING". This problem continues in the currnt organization structures between the FBI, CIA and Dept of State. Obama has a year to re-organize this mess and he has chosen to leave the Bush configurations in place, the very problems cited in the (9/11 Commission's report persist today one year later.

  48. Anon - you are full of crap!!!

If there is one thing that I hope to hammer into some of you it would be to get you to broaden your picture BEYOND the federal government and who is in the White House.

It is stunning to see how many of you believe that the Executive Branch reigns supreme in this nation - even over the local issues that confront you.

The truth is that the network of local political machines and their decisions have far more aggregate power than does the Federal Executive branch in deciding the course that this nation will take. It is not even close.

Furthermore in as much as you bash the occupants of the White House that you don't like I struggle to understand why the PROGRESSIVE'S goal is to EMPOWER and EMBOLDEN the group of people in 536 people who control the Legislative and Executive branches of the federal government.

The Homeland Security ARCHITECTURE was defined by CONGRESS!!!! The agencies that you speak of were aligned by the legislation that evil Bush signed. Obama WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO unilaterally move any agency out of the DHS into a different one to your liking.

I strongly suggest, Anon - that after 4 or 8 years of Obama you will be either talking about how he failed because BUSH'S destruction to the nation was greater than 1 or 2 terms of Obama OR you will be talking about how Obama took over and set this nation on the right course. A course that just happened to be heading LEFTWARD and off of the edge of the earth.

I don't understand how you all can look at a member of the CHICAGO MACHINE and expect miracles instead of looking at the condition of EDUCATION, CRIME AND MIDDLE CLASS ECONOMICS IN CHICAGO today and use this as a reference of what you can expect when this machine expands nationally.
