GO OUT AND GET A JOB AND STOP DEPENDING ON YOUR GOVERNMENT.

"The rich will do anything for the poor but get off their backs." ~Marx~

I swear republicans get more outrageouser ( I know that's not a word, I just made it up) every day. I didn't think that anyone could top Trent Franks -implying that us Negroes were better off during those long hot days of slavery- but I think that the number two senate republican, Jon Kyl of Arizona, might have done just that.

"Unemployment insurance "doesn't create new jobs. In fact, if anything, continuing to pay people unemployment compensation is a disincentive for them to seek new work," Kyl said during debate over whether unemployment insurance and other benefits that expired amid GOP objections Sunday should be extended.

I'm sure most of them would like work and probably have tried to seek it, but you can't argue that it's a job enhancer. If anything, as I said, it's a disincentive. And the same thing with the COBRA extension and the other extensions here," said Kyl."

Nice Mr. Republican, that will endear you to the A-merry-can people. And people wonder why I fear for this country. Why shouldn't I? Especially when clowns like Jon Kyl can be elected by the people from the" land of the sun" to represent them.

"A disincentive"? Hey asshole, how about it helps to pay their damn bills and keep food on the table so that they can feed their families? Does this asshole really think that people don't want to work? And does he really think that the amount of unemployment benefits is enough to keep them sitting at home and not trying to find a job? Don't answer that; it was a rhetorical question. Of course he does.

I used to joke that republicans would be for slavery because there was zero unemployment for blacks during that time. Now, in retrospect, I don't think that joke is so funny.

Man I wish I woulda studied politics, yeah, yup, that's the life....do nothing but walk around shuffling papers and maybe carry a briefcase to a cushy office, and live like a king/queen. The best restaurants, best clothes, privileges all over the place, the best HEALTH INSURANCE, that's a biggie, best vacations, resorts, massages, Prosti...oops..never mind that...but you get the picture, and all on the taxpayers dime! Wonderful!!!

Yet they would deny a meager unemployment check to a displaced worker. Some balls huh???

Of course they don't want to work! They weren't working before in order to qualify to receive unemployment benefits....oh wait.

    This dude is insane.

  3. It is interesting when a Senator doesn't know the law. He should know that COBRA and Medicaid are not the same.

If minimum wage or unemployment benefits such a windfall, someone in congress needs to challenge Senator Kyl to take that as his salary.

  4. .........and the unemployed, with or without their benefits, should fall on their knees and thank the Republicans for their foolproof new diet plan.

and it's like that here too! Here in PR the average monthly salary for a cop,a nurse,a teacher is #1,600.
But the mayor makes $11,000 a month! plus all the other perks!

Field what we are seeing are more and more of these folks with these outrageous conservative ideas feeling more comfortable in expressing them because they believe they have an audience.

The crazy part about it is that many working class folks believe these lies about their working class brethren.

This also points out how really unrepresentative the US system of representation really is, I mean most of this guys constituents are working class and many of them need that unemployment extension.

Worse is Kentucky where both Senators are vehemently opposed to unemployment extensions and just about anything else that would help their out of work constituents BTW Kentucky has one of the highest employment rates in the country.

And the response to that idiot Arizona Rep who said that black folks present condition is worse than slavery is a bit too muted for my comfortability. If black folks start to let this stuff pass they may make others actually believe its true.

And my guess is that the reason he can say stuff like this without feeling and looking foolish is because he really doesn't understand what slavery meant and the totality of the death destruction and degradation that it brought on. I suspect many other Americans think it wasn't that bad. I have heard folks say that we are better off for having been stolen from Africa, look at Africa they say.

4.5% of the working population's been out of work for longer than the 6 month period of State benefits. I'd say that if this doesn't bite the neo-confederate right wingers in the senatein the a$$ nothing will.

No, these types of politicians making hateful remarks are NOT funny!
I once worked with a guy who said that the Japanese Americans who were put behind barbed wire during WW II were done a favor because they got free room and board, etc.
He didn't see that he sounded like an idiot. BTW he was a Republican, doesn't surprise anyone does it.

Kyl will probably be returned to the Senate, Arizona is a very Red state.

    Glad I'm in Hawaii

    Aloha from Makaii

    ReplyDelete
  16. Kyl is a bombastic hypocrite.

I heard the same hypocritical pomposity from 'conservatives' during my military service and still hear it today from them today as a defense contractor.

Why are they hypocritical? They are hypocritical because they excoriate and deny those who seek the same things they possess. Wait, isn't that the definition of a bigot?

Case in point, when I was in the Army, soldiers, who are conservative, would constantly rail against the idea of universal health care. But they receive government health care (Tri Care).

They are same folks who scream that government is the problem and let the free market flourish. But yet, these bozos are on the government dole, oops, I mean they are serving their country. And after they have 'served their country', they seek the security of Uncle Sam via a cushy government job that they got because they 'knew the right people' and not because they competed fair and square. Despite the aforementioned, they believe in meritocracy. Again, hypocritical pomposity.

I cannot stand conservatives and their hypocrisy.

I'll answer that question. If there is a place on the continent of Africa a man is respected by the content of his character rather than the color of his skin, then I would rather live there than in America.

Economic prosperity and technological development does not make racism acceptable!

  18. Hypocrisy isn't just a Republican virtue ... witness Charlie Rangel and Pelosi's "most ethical Congress ever".

There are good people on both sides of the aisle; there are also hypocrites and weasels.

Just like there are good people in every group, and liars, thieves and degenerates. That's a fact that is not dependent upon the amount of God-given sunscreen one is blessed with.

I really like Zerohedge.com, it's one of the sites I surf with my cup of coffee in the morning.

They recently had a very good article by Leo Kolivakis titled,

inside the article was one by Michael Lind from Harper's Magazine that I remember reading years ago -- and it is TRUE.

I remember being at a dinner party discussing Clinton's welfare reforms and a CEO of a major US bank told me the whole point of welfare is to give the lower classes just enough that they don't want to break into your house and steal your stuff, but not enough that they can ever rise above their station in life.

Truer words never spoken, which is why the continued escalation of divisions based on race, gender, etc. and the fostering of an "us" vs. "them" mentality.

We need to wake up and work TOGETHER. Our children deserve better than the slop they're dishing out to everyone.

  21. I learned that a lot of so called conservatives go straight TO the welfare line or unemployment line when they have lost a job! It is all bullshit rhetoric that they don't even follow themselves. I have preached fiscal responsibility in the past, but when my husband lost his job and our health insurance ran out AND I had found out I was pregnant, we gave up our pride and got prenatal care from the county programme for two months! I am happy that safety net was there. By the time the MEDICAL caseworker got around to processing our paperwork, my husband had got a job already.

We are blessed. My husband has marketable skills and is a software engineer. At this point, he is still employable. However, we don't know how long this will last. Ultimately, we've seen whole SECTORS EVAPORATE where people were trained and then they up and are unemployed with no prospects in the future for what they were trained to do.

It is time for us all to wake up and love one another as human beings. We've got to put all this pettiness aside and look out for each other because things is rough out there. I have never seen anything like this in my life and I see good hard working people who want to work just suffering due to the contraction in the economy and the bailout of these corrupt banks.

The chickens is coming home to roost and I hope and pray that we live through this time and can find a common bond. Otherwise, I fear we might see another civil war over the economy and if you lived where I live, you'd understand what I mean...

    ReplyDelete
  22. M. Rigmaiden,

The whole point of the safety net is that it is there in emergencies.

Many years ago, our youngest got very, very sick and was hospitalized on and off for the first year of her life. I couldn't breast feed her and she needed a very special formula that cost over $900/mth ...back in 1996...which we couldn't afford. We applied for WIC and it was a godsend...not only did it help with the cost of formula, but the emotional support of the nurses when I took her for weigh-ins was a blessing.

There are many good programs out there, and are worth the funding. Like most people, I resent outright fraud and abuse, but never giving someone a helping hand when they are down and out.

There but for the grace of God go I.....

Show me the source that BLACK LEFTISTS go to in order to feed upon the CHUM that you all spew.

I got an email from "Rolling Out" magazine with the same molestation of Rep Frank's comments.

It is sad that YOU pulled this sentiment out of his behind while ignoring the far more COMPELLING arguments that he made about Black children being aborted AND AGAINST SLAVERY!!!!!!!

I guess you didn't see that portion of the clip.

    FEAR NOT though Filled Negro.
As I study biased Black media sources such as AfroSpear I am learning how to stop you all from SNATCHING AWAY my people's FOCUS via your heavy dosage of RACISM CHASING.

For example - today I heard about the antics of former VP Candidate John Edwards - who got 90% of the Black vote in 2004. You all hated the thought of Sarah Palin in as VP - Its funny how there has been a total Black blog "White out" about the book written by Andrew Young.

    * Paid Government staff members - checking hotel rooms for misplaced CONDOMS after his trysts

    * Prior to his presidential kick off in which he was in New Orleans using poor Blacks as "stage props" he stayed in a $600 per night hotel room and then ordered up some old jeans to wear for when he was "filming with the Negroes"

    * Ordering his staff to take his $5000 Italian made suit and removing the label, replacing it with a "MADE IN AMERICA" label

Young went on and on and on.

WHERE IS GEORGE CURRY - the former National Black Newspapers Publisher's Association who was a strong supporter of Edwards? Is he reporting about how he was FOOLED into believing that this was a good man?

What ultimately is the purpose of these Black Media sources OTHER THAN making sure that the Democratic Party remains strong WITHIN THE BLACK COMMUNITY - Filled Negro?

IT MOST CERTAINLY IS NOT for improving the Black community.

    Better yet LET'S DO THIS!!!

Let us take the same disposition that OBAMA HAS AGAINST THE Banks and Industry that took money out of the Federal Treasury and have the same PUNITIVE SPIRIT against the individual!!!!!!!!

    OBAMA THE CONSERVATIVE:

    * We are going to fight to make sure that EVERY PENNY TAKEN OUT OF THE TREASURY FOR UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE and PAYING OFF DELINQUENT MORTGAGES gets PAID BACK TO THE TREASURY!!!!!

    * We are going to levy NEW FEES against all who TOOK THIS MONEY so that there will be disincentive for unions to refuse reasonable concessions from corporate "CONSUMERS OF LABOR".

Again - Aside from a violation to your SOCIAL JUSTICE sensitivities - please articulate WHERE KYLE is wrong about these statements?

What we are doing is using GOVERNMENT DEBT to finance a STANDARD OF LIVING that our present ECONOMIC OUTPUT cannot afford us to LIVE AT. When INDIVIDUALS did this on their PERSONAL CREDIT CARDS - you all blamed the BANKS for being greedy. WHAT should we say about the GOVERNMENT now that it is doing the same damned thing?

    Filled Negro, Jody and RJ:

I am currently bathing in "leftist thought" so I can better understand you all.

For most of you it is far more CONTEMPTIBLE to deny Government Payments to people who are unemployed at this point in time than it is to call out "JOB DESTROYING POLICIES" that have turned once great cities that were built up by capitalism and corporate might into hollow shells of themselves.

We are supposed to ignore the migrations that have taken place over the past 150 years. In the world of Filled Negro people moved to a place because of the GOVERNMENT.

Any fair reading of history will tell you that they moved because of EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES. In as much as certain population centers with a certain ideological and policy preference are also the UNEMPLOYMENT CENTERS, one would have to have a desperate sense of ECONOMIC DISHONESTY to fail to see the pattern.

WHY is it that you attack anyone who denies GOVERNMENT transfer payments for the sake of supporting a STANDARD OF LIVING that a person is used to YET you are silent about an Organized Labor Movement who's INTENTION was to help the "suppliers of labor" but in truth they RAN THE "CONSUMERS OF LABOR" OFF because the product that they were selling was TOO EXPENSIVE?

I argue that Filled Negro should be supporting PRICE SUPPORTS paid by the government to various retail companies so that they can MAINTAIN THEIR REVENUES HIGH while offering their products to the CONSUMERS OF THEIR GOODS at a lower market price.

THIS IS A DAMNED IRRATIONAL STATEMENT Jody!!!!!

The woman who seeks to SPRING "Street Pirate Killers" has a lust to lock up LEGISLATORS who are watching the WATER LEVEL OF THE RESERVOIR and noting the outflows.

Here is what you don't seem to understand:
Once you get your fantasy and have "Multiple Tax Payer Paid Health Care" thus your friend INVOICES FOR SERVICES RENDERED will be sent to the Federal Treasury - ON THE FIRST PASS the costs will be incurred just as they are today.

Once what was once DISTRIBUTED TO THE PERIPHERY to pay is now AGGREGATED upon the national "reservoir" TO pay - the drainage rate is going to rampantly INCREASE.

The first past will be a MASSIVE TAX INCREASE to restore the water level.

Once the negative impact of having more money being taken out of our private hands to feed Mellaneous' BEAST who has an insatiable appetite is seen the ONLY POSSIBLE RECOURSE is indeed the slashing of service levels (pay cuts for medical personnel, QUEUING of service, denial of expensive drugs, etc) are unavoidably in this future.

As much as you all HATE the evil Insurance companies raising their rates the TRUTH IS that they main flaw is that they are attempting to MAINTAIN THE SAME LEVEL OF SERVICE QUALITY as their rate of INFLOW into their resource pool has decreased.

The Blue Cross in Cali should have indeed CUT THEIR SERVICE LEVELS to the very same level that is UNAVOIDABLE in a system which is "Single Payer" in orientation. This would give the masses a preview of the future.

All of the LIES that have been marketed this past year regarding "Health Care on the cheap" with no consequences will one day be exposed. The Health Care Industry's 3.6% profit margin which totals $15 BILLION in cash PALES in comparison to the new $90 BILLION PER YEAR of new spending that this health care bill will enact.
You all HATE $15B in PROFITS but say NOTHING about the $1,400 billion in DEFICIT that your NEW INSURANCE conglomerate ran up in that same period of time.

It seems that you don't believe the sick should be able to purchase health care. WTF is it for then. If you can't transport your insurance in some form, eventually there would be no one insured. Just wait until the insurance companies start using your genes to deny you coverage.

"Now, I wish I could just write a check—you say, 'Why not?' Well, you know, there's this whole thing about the Constitution and Congress and"—here the president smirked as some in the crowd laughed—"not to mention the fact that...one of the interesting things you find out about being president is everybody will attack you for spending money, unless you're spending it on them. You notice that? So we've got to go through procedures."

This morning, Bordenave—who is quoted in The New York Times as calling Obama's response "a blow-off answer"—told me: "I felt he could have at least given me a straightforward answer, even 'We have real doubts about the costs of the damage.' Instead he said, 'Oh, it's the Congress and the Constitution and I can't write you a check.' He was trying to avoid the issue."

The question is what would Africa be if there had not been slavery? For that matter what would America be? Would it have been a place for European immigrants to come? I think Andrew Jackson encourage immigration and land grants, because at that time, there were more slaves than white people. Just think what would have happened if the abolitionist had won and there were more free Black than whites.

If one assumes Blacks would be better off here, it is to assume that left alone the African countries would not evolved or worked out disputes differently than any other people. This says to me that anyone that makes that statement thinks Africans are truly inferior beings.

Never mind that after the Roman Empire declined, it took twelve centuries for Europe to come out of the dark ages. I don't know if they even knew how to make soap.

Not at all. There is more diversity of peoples in Africa than in the rest of the world combined, and in many ways wonderful.

If Africa had been left alone there would today be many fewer Africans, and no new world diaspora. Given time, certainly a distinct modern Africa would have arisen, however, the rest of the world rarely waits. What would Europe be like had it been "left alone" by Rome or the Mongols? What would North Africa, Persia and India have been like if "left alone" by the Arabs? That's not how things work. Africa has been wrenched into the modern world along with tribal beliefs and hatreds, and there is much to be worked out yet. The middle of the continent is under assault from the Muslim north. Marxist precepts are destroying South Africa. Almost all of the governments are rife with corruption. There is much that is beautiful and uplifting, but this is played out against a background of violence and thievery. For the great majority of the people, Africa today is a pretty tough place.

  59. Ok, I've read most of the statements that have been posted and please allow me to put my .20 to .45 cents worth of information on you.

I'm from KY and unemployed due a company layoff (dept decided to go virtul with another out of state company), currently taking classes and going through the unemployment check process.

Kentucky Republican senator, Jim Bunning has been blocking this issue for the longest and ALOT of peeps are furious even some of the GOP. If you are not too keen on the unemployment benefits lingo here it is (and if you are, please disregard my explanation). You have what is called a tier which give the amount of money you are allowed to received and how long you will receive it. Once that amount is gone then it's gone...period!

The extensions are just that, to extend the pay period for those who continued to be on unemployment. And that's what some of these senators are trying to block, additional funds to extend the tier, which is FOUL!

Yes, there are some lazy peeps who refuse to work and take advantage of this benefit, yet in THIS economy, there are most that have been laid off for a while, recently laid off and those who have a hard to getting a job. We know that. I was just at the unemployment office today and it was like a ghost town....but those who were there were angry about the situation.

I'm writing the senator in lue of his decision for it affects more people than he "thinks" it does. During his "speech" he made rants about missing the Kentucky basketball game out of all things.

I'll leave you this comment: “When the end of the world comes, I want to be in Kentucky, because everything there happens 20 years after it happens anywhere else.” – Mark Twain. Does this include politicians as well? hahaha!

    Be cool Field! Keep fighting!

Ascribing one asshat's remarks to the whole Republican congress is a straw man argument. The point is you can't just keep waving a magic wand so you can keep handing out money forever. Bunning is simply trying to make congress pay for what they spend. Bunning has blocked the Senate from spending $10,000,000,000 (Ten Billion Dollars) to extend unemployment benefits until the Senate can pay for it by cutting other programs or raising taxes. i.e. Bunning wants the Senate to follow the Pay-as-you-go legislation the senate passed and the president signed last week. For daring to insist that the Senate follow the law, Bunning is being demonized by the Democrats as insensitive to the unemployed. There's also unspent Stimulus spending that could be tasked. But Democrats balk at those suggestions. They just want to borrow and spend.

The Dark Ages happened after the collapse of Rome (a European power) and the Mongols contributed little to European learning-outside of military matters. It was the Renaissance that pushed Europe to the forefront.

    Secondly,

There has never been a time where there were more blacks than whites in North America under slavery. Though there was indeed fears of slave uprising (especially in South Carolina) no slave rebellion ever came remotely close to overthrowing state authority, much less anything on the federal level. Unlike the Caribbean, slaves were hemmed in by larger and well armed white populations.

(They are both one and the same it doesn't really matter)

Entry requirements/qualifications, you will need to possess the following outstanding qualities:

You must have excellent communication skills and you must suffer from a really good dose of verbal diarrhoea. You must possess the ability to talk either bull or horse shit, at all times. And you must also have the charismatic charms of an enema.

You as an individual must have shit for brains. Your constituents must have shit for brains. Your wife must have shit for brains. So that if you get caught having a freaky affair, with a four thousand dollar an hour prostitute, your wife will be able to stand by you, in front of the podium. In front of all those cameras, looking like a picture of total rejection, while your constituents, lap up your bull shit of an apology.

Last but not least, if you can read this advertisement, you are over qualified.

I know you often post how sometimes you can never "really" know someone. This is what happened to me.

My spouse has a work-acquaintence who said his wife was coming to our area for a bit and expressed some money-concern issues. My spouse offered up our "guest suite" for this person for what was supposed to be a few days.

Long story short, he converted our garage into a comfy guest suite with a private bath for our elderly parents to use when they visit, because getting up the stairs is too hard for them. This is where this WOA (wife of acquaintance) installed herself.

I homeschool our youngest and she does alot of her schoolwork online via correspondence. Our office/den is her "school room" and she has her own laptop in there. We don't have it password protected and we always supervise when she's on it.

Anyways, apparently one night she left her e-mail account open and the computer turned on.

What we found out after we kicked this WOA out was that she was using our daughter's account to engage in flame wars with people (I'm not sure if she actually believed the stuff she wrote, or if she just gets jollies from winding people up) and my daughter has been subjected to some pretty vicious emails. We ended up closing the email account and opening a new one for her, because the level of anger and the language was pretty frightening.

This WOA also downloaded really raunchy porn -- not TnA stuff, but truly vile stuff -- into the "My Pictures" file on my daughter's laptop, which also didn't find out until after she was gone. Um, that was pretty upsetting.

I feel really violated and part of me just wants to donate my daughter's computer to someone and buy her a new, untainted one. It's that bad.

But, as bad as that is, the deranged lunatics that she attracted are pretty scary. I'm actually paranoid that one in particular will show up at the door. My husband thinks I'm over reacting.

I know in your line of work you deal with people that aren't exactly balanced. Am I over reacting? Or should I be worried?

Oh, and BTW, this WOA was a theology student in college and likes to quote the Bible. Continually.

I didn't make any argument regarding European power. The collapse of Rome to the Renaissance 12 centuries was it not? Maybe 10 centuries if you count the Roman empire when it was run from Constantinople.

As you can see, the highest percentage of slaves in the US at any one time between 1800 and 1860 was 17 percent of the population. At the time of Jackson's term in office the percentage of slaves would have been between 15 and 15.6 percent of the population.

Increasingly, historians find the term "Dark Ages" a misnomer that is, at best, applicable only to the early middle ages. We now that intellectual progress continued and that the term is now only used mostly to denote Britain in the fifth and sixth centuries.

    but

these are my 2 fav paras that NULLIFY those who dare to pretend than dems are anything more than mere toxic carbon copies of repubs:

"The noise is deceptive. Off-camera, beyond the blazing lights, past the ropy tangle of black cords and down the hall, in the corner offices (on Capitol Hill as well as at General Electric, The Walt Disney Company, and CBS News), people in expensive suits quietly continue to go about the work of shifting the center of gravity of wealth and power in the United States from the discounted many to the privileged few. While public attention has been diverted to controversies as inflammatory as they are trivial. Should the Constitution be amended to ban flag-burning? Should dirty pictures be allowed on the Internet? The American elites that subsidize and staff both the Republican and Democratic parties have steadfastly waged a generation-long class war against the middle and working classes. Now and then the television cameras catch a glimpse of what is going on, as they did last year during the NAFTA and GATT debates, when a Democratic President and a bipartisan majority in Congress collaborated in the sacrifice of American labor to the interests of American corporations and foreign capital. More recently, with a candor rare among politicians, House Speaker Newt Gingrich argued against raising the minimum wage in the United States---on the grounds that a higher minimum wage would handicap American workers in their competition with workers in Mexico.

The camera, however, quickly returns to the set and the shouting audience, while assistant producers hold up placards with the theme for the day: the Contract with America, the New Covenant, Affirmative Action, Moral Renewal. It's against the rules to talk about a rapacious American oligarchy, and the suggestion that the small group of people with most of the money and power in the United States just might be responsible to some degree for what has been happening to the country over the last twenty years invariably invites the news media to expressions of wrath and denial. Whenever a politician proposes to speak for the many---whether he is on the left (Jerry Brown), right (Patrick Buchanan), or center (Ross Perot)---the Op-Ed pages in the nation's better newspapers (the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal) issue stern warnings of "demagogy." Yes, the pundits admit, economic and social inequality have been growing in the United States, with alarming results, but the ruling and possessing class cannot be blamed, because, well, there is no ruling and possessing class."

    amen!!!

sadly, we do not have the same media in 2010 that we had in 1995

  80. What part of "He doesn't give a fuck" y'all don't understand? The dude is not running for reelection. But at the same time I see where he is coming from to a certain degree. My girlfriend is from Germany, a fresh off the boat German. She explained that not too long ago you could go to school completely in Germany free for whoever long you wanted. Yep, you guessed it you have some professional students over there. She was telling me this past weekend that the University students in Germany were whining because that going to college isn't going to be free anymore and that they would have to pay like 750 ($1125.00) euro per year for their education and room and board (That's a bargain!)Apparently Germany has a lot of safety nets for their people but they PAY for it. The tax rate is high but you don't have to worry about healthcare or school. Hell, it cost like $0.50-$1.00 just to use the camode in the subway (old school). But before y'all start in on me, yeah I was unemployment before, but the difference between me and some other people is that I filed for it then went to become a "street pirate" (couldn't resist) for a period of time and started hustling poker and working under the table at a restaurant to pay for child support ($800 pm) and rent ($750 rent & utilities pm) and then when the unemployment check came in I just banked it until I found a "real job". Staying at home waiting for a job or a check wasn't an option and either was jail (child support). Just giving my 2 cents for what it's worth.

With Germany's "socialized" health-care, how does its healthcare rank globally. I bet it ranks higher than 37th!

I wonder how Germany is dealing with the global financial crisis. Last I heard, they were experiencing a better recovery than the country that is most culpable for the disaster.

Thanks for the link. I ordered it and look forward to reading. We need a virtual book club ;>)

I like books that challenge me, and I especially like contrarian views of history, especially if they're well cited.

My husband likes to order all kinds of fringe books because of his line of work -- he likes to keep tabs on what the "other" are up to. You can't develop a counter strategy if you don't understand the mind set of your opposition. Right now he's reading "Coup D'Etat" by Luttwak.
I'm sure as a consequence of our reading choices and Amazon purchases, we've just been added to many, many more lists. I hope to have a "file" thick enough that they need a dump truck to move it.
We independent thinkers are like that ;>)

In that spirit, I also ordered "Defensive Racism" by J. Edgar Steele from his website. Apparently he defended white nationalists and this "changed" his attitude towards race relations. I'll let you know how that one turns out.

If you haven't read it yet, buy the classic "Confessions of An Economic HitMan" by John Perkins. My cousin works for the IMF as a full time rapist of third world economies, and Perkins book is true. Needless to say, weddings and funerals are tense times.

    The answer:

The anti-intellectual / ant-achievement culture rampant among poor black communities ensures chronic academic failure. The success of black Americans who break from this culture proves it is this disfunctionalism, not racism, that keeps this large segment of the black population down.

To add to this, Germany does not have government schools in their big cities run by teacher's unions whose primary driver is job security. The democrat subsidiary NEA does more to harm the American education system (especially minority education)in the service of a corrupt coalition of politicians and union bosses than any disparity of resources.

How true. If one is going to make broad and sweeping generalizations, one thing that always impresses me is just how positive and upbeat Africans are, in spite of the fact that most of them don't have the "benefit" of the consumer goods that most middle class kids here have.

Ignorance about Africa is maybe one of the few last acceptable frontiers of bigotry.

In the mid 1960's my mom worked with a physician from South Africa who became a really close friend of our whole family, and someone who made a positive difference in my life. He said he came to Canada to practice, because when he was answering ads for work, the job in Canada was the only one which didn't ask for a photograph, and he was hired based on his training and residency status (he was in the top 5% of his group).
He was an incredibly gifted intellectual and his story is even more remarkable when you consider what barriers he had to overcome to become a physician as a black man in South Africa in the late 1950's/early 1960's.

I hear you. In Canada, you get a "baby bonus" every month to help with expenses, and a larger check in winter for winter clothing allowance, etc.

Many Americans like to romanticize social democracies like Canada or Germany.

The taxes are much higher because nothing is free, you end up paying one way or another.

It bothers me that Canadians when talking to Americans sometimes get smug that their set-up is better. It's not better, it's just different.

The only thing Canadians don't like to admit is how systems like theirs and Germany's limit people's options.

For example, when I was in HS, we had to write exams at the end of 8th grade. How you scored determined whether or not you go to go to a General Ed HS, a Tech/Vocab school, or a university prep "Collegiate".

I scored high enough to go to one of the city's top ranked Collegiates. To get into university, you had to finish Grade 13 with honors.

And then, all university applications had to be made through 1 central facility (much like the MCAS and PCAS system in the US) but you could only apply to 3. And you had to rank your choices. So you had to game the system and choose carefully -- because alot of schools wouldn't admit you if you didn't rank them as your first choice.

And the "college" track and "university" track are separate and distinct, with no lapover or transfer of credits. A college diploma is not the same as a bachelor's degree.

When I first moved to the States, I was blown away by the educational opportunities -- the open enrollment community college system, night school .....it's fantastic.

So those kids in Germany getting subsidized university education are those top rankers. Not everyone gets the opportunity.

Which is why so many go-go entrepeneurial Canadians come to the US to reach for the brass ring. They're stifled and restricted at home. The US is truly the only place where you can have unlimited opportunity.

Don't want to write too much more and hog FN's space.

But I hear you .... as an immigrant, I don't like it when immigrants go on about how much better things are "at home". So why are you here? No one has chained me to a radiator to keep me against my will. If I don't like it, I'm free to go anytime. So are they!

    Hathor,

There were indeed large populations of slaves in the south; still, the total American slave population did not increase much after 1800 and the end of the slave trade. Even if a large scale slave revolt had succeeded in the south-which it never did-those slaves would have faced the union army. There was not much of a chance there. Apparently most slaves were aware of the odds as well since there were so few slave rebellions in the states.

    Karen,

The Human Development Index, which measures adult literacy, life expectancy, education, and quality of life, has Canada way above the United States. In fact, things are going backwards in the US.

We are the only developed country that has experienced a massive surge of economic inequality in the past thirty years.
The share of the nations income flowing to the top one-tenth of 1 percent of households increased from 7.3 percent of the total income in the nation in 2002 to 12.3 percent in 2007. This is the highest level in the Piketty-Saez data going back to 1913, surpassing even the previous peak in 1928!

Probably the best account of slave life and resistance is "Roll, Jordan, Roll: The World the Slaves Made."

My point was that slaves avoided armed rebellion because most knew it to be a futile enterprise. Most forms of resistance were far more subtle.

You need to read more non-approved history about conditions in the South at the beginning of the civil war.

The slaves were shamelessly exploited as political tools by Lincoln and the Republicans for the benefit of the Northern merchant class.

Read Prof DiLorenzo's book "The Real Lincoln" to understand just how the slaves were set up in a lose-lose situation.

And the South also had its share of white slaves --- aka Indentured servants from the beginning of the European founding of this country.

As screwed over as the black population was, they at least didn't face the wholesale genocide that the Native American population did when they stood in the way of white empire building of the few and the connected.

But the conditions that set up the black community and then served to further demonize them and blame them for continuing to be behind the power curve of "equal opportunity" -- which implies that everyone at least gets to start at the same starting line -- continues to this day.

Yes, there is a segment of lower socio-economic stratum of the black community that is encumbered with anti-intellectual and anti-achievement disposition. Blacks who can break away from these depressed conditions means that they will achieve despite racism that wish to keep them down, IMO.

Yes, the education system needs to be retooled. Should government (state in concert with federal) choose to get its shit together, I believe it is better equipped to do this vice private industry, because it has the resources to do so.

A glaring example is the school in Rhode Island choosing to clean house, because the school was underperforming. This could be a first great step. However, it is not a panacea, because inept teachers are not the sole source of a school underperforming. The student and parent need to be taken to task.

Did NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND cause them to do these things OR did the FAVORABLE PEOPLE who were ELECTED TO RUN THESE PLACES by the people CHOOSE to formulate COMPLIANCE by doing these things? Come correct girl.

You SHOULD be asking "What about their character and dignity afforded them the motivation to do these things as such? Despite claiming that the had these kid's best interests in mind?"

The truth is that these RADICAL REPUBLICANS that you speak of where indeed liberals.

BUT WAIT - notice that Karen doesn't speak about the beloved DEMOCRATS. She knows that she can craft a bit of history that defends her PRESENT PARTY and pleases the rest of you.

Karen - the "Colfax Massacre" in LA was an example of a DIRECT CORRELATION between MURDERED BLACK PEOPLE and the Democratic Party being seated into POWER as direct result.

Don't forget about the "Red Shirts" in South Carolina and beyond.

Also the "Copper Head Democrats" in the North who were RACIST Southern Sympathizers. They worked to undercut the Union War effort.

I take it that you forgot that Lincoln locked up the mayor of Baltimore because he sought to turn MD into revolt prior to the Union Army being able to retain it in the union.

Plain and simple there was indeed RACISM and assumed inferiority of Blacks at the time. YOU pretend that someone is going to go from SLAVE to EQUAL merely by the folks wanting to do right.

EVEN MANY ABOLITIONISTS WERE RACIST!!!! While they wanted Blacks to avoid slavery THEY DID NOT WANT ANY 'FIELD NEGROES" living next door to them. They had the honor of their White daughters to protect after all.

    My friend Alicia Banks:

    THIS IS A LIE.

I busted Jonathan Kozol on this claim.

HE CLAIMED that thanks to NCLB school children in Chicago no longer have recess.

I did the research which showed that RECESS was taken away in Chicago 2 years PRIOR to evil Bush coming into office and NCLB being enacted.

There is a vast difference between what NCLB mandates AND the policies/practices that various school systems choose to implement in reaction to the heightened standards.

Do you find it ironic that various CHARTER SCHOOLS are extending the school day AND they offer recess - while certain "Government Operated Schools" are inflexible about the length of the day and thus recess has been taken away?

    ReplyDelete
  145. not sure any of you are aware of what's up with this really, but it's not just an extension of cobra.

ever tried to get COBRA? it sucks. it's terribly expensive. it's the same policy as your employer gets BUT you pay the whole thing--no employer to cover 80%.

what has expired is the subsidies as well as the eligibility for cobra and unemployment itself. so people can't get it and they can't afford it if they could.

again, i gotta ask, those who think they're above others who need unemployment: ever live on unemployment? it's not enough.

AND to get it you have to go and show you've been looking for work.

finally, this is something new. this recession isn't over. unlike the "great depression," which CF, i'm guessing you lived thru, we are already in two failing wars so we can't into another one to start a war economy boom. we are talking long, long, long term unemployment. these people, many of them, will NEVER get work again. because their jobs are gone and not coming back.

Excerpts from The Shame of a Nation: The Restoration of Apartheid Schooling in America by Jonathan Kozol:

Pediatricians and psychiatrists may be disturbed to hear of schools where recess is truncated or abolished by the desperation to carve out a bit more time for drilling children for exams.

I thought the tests-and-standards movement had been loaded with a coarse utilitarian toxicity and a demeaning anti-human view of childhood right from the start.

By giving every particle of learning an official name, we strip it of its uniqueness, fascination, and delight... no matter what lip-service we may pay to them, they become irrelevant distractions.

Teachers who come into elementary education with some literary background tell me that they sometimes feel they are engaging in a complicated kind of treachery, when they are forced repeatedly to excavate a piece of poetry, or any other literary work of charm or value, to extract examples of official skills that have some testable utility. Nothing could be less efficient than this misappropriation of a teacher's energy and hours.

The difference in too many schools like P. S. 65 is that nearly the entire school day comes to be a matter of unnatural theatrics that cannot be improvised to any degree without the risk of teachers being criticized by their superiors.

Leaving these kids so utterly adrift in time and place seemed like an act of state-determined cognitive decapitation.

In a nation in which fairness was respected, children of the poorest and least educated mothers would receive the most expensive and most costly pre-school preparation, not the least and cheapest, because children in these families need it so much more than those educated parents can deliver the same benefits of early learning to them in their home.

The inequities in educational provisions that we give, or do not give, these children from the starting gate are given less attention.

The look of tortured dignity in the eyes of many [educators] who had welcomed me remained as one of the most stirring memories of that experience.

    5:31 PM"

I guess I'm not following/tracking the point you're trying to make.

    (1) the points made by AB & others regarding history is true. History is written by the "winners" and those who have an interest in marketing their version of the truth. History can be used as another tool of power and control. My Studmuffin, a history major, has a great paper he wrote on this.

For example, how many Americans know about the history of the Loyalists who were forced to flee during the American Revolution? The "Revolution" was in fact the US's first civil war. It doesn't matter to most Americans, because the answer doesn't affect them, and asking questions would compromise their "official" view of history.

During the Loyalist evacuation from the US, the ships were stuffed so full that young children in the bowels of the ship suffocated to death. I can't imagine the fear. It may not be important to "you" as an American, but it's part of my history, so it's important to me.

Likewise, the history about slavery and revolt. Just because it isn't in any history book you've read, doesn't mean that it didn't happen. It's important to the black community, because it's part of THEIR collective history and world view. Just because it's not a part of the "official" history of the country doesn't invalidate it or make it less important.

    (2) What point are you trying to make? That black slaves "didn't" want to escape, or didn't have the wherewithall to revolt? Are you trying to infer that slaves LIKED being enslaved and were so weak that they RESIGNED themselves to their fate?

My paternal grandfather was sent to Orangeville, Canada from Wales as a young boy of 12 as part of the "Orphan Train".
    http://www.orphantraindepot.com/OrphanTrainHistory.html

He wasn't an orphan, but one of a family of 16 kids in a very poor family. His dad was a typesetter for the local printer, back when that was a skilled trade. His parents were promised that he would have a better life if they sent him to Canada. So they signed the papers, and put this very small, frail little boy on a boat to a country an ocean away.
(And when I mean "small", as a grown man, my Grandpa topped out at 5'1").

When he got to Canada, he didn't see a better life, but he was a virtual slave sent to work on a farm. His receiving family were cruel and inhumane. Considered just "the help" he wasn't allowed to live in the house but slept in the loft in the barn. He was whipped frequently with horse reins to the point of scarring.

In spite of that, he overcame. He was the kindest, gentlest, spiritually strongest man you could ever meet. He never raised his voice, let alone hit us. He was a pillar of his community.

Canada has its own ugly history with its treatment of the Orphan Train children and the Native Americans sent to residential schools.

The long history of oppression isn't just limited to blacks in the South.

But I digress. The point I was trying to come to, because he didn't run away, did that mean he "liked" his situation? Or that he didn't have courage? Where was a little boy in rural Ontario supposed to go?

    People like you confuse me.

My point was very simple: Large-scale slave revolts were mostly absent in the south. The nature of southern slavery made resistance a much more complicated and more subtle affair. Most slaves did not attempt to escape or revolt because they knew their chances were slim; instead, they developed many other ways to resist the indignities of slavery. I'm not sure what you find so controversial in that.

The fact that history is written by the winners is known the world over.

  163. assnons think karen is as stupid and homophobic as they are

audre lorde knew a lot about assnons

    “When I say I am a Black Lesbian, I mean I am a woman
whose primary focus of loving, physical as well as
emotional, is directed to women. It does not mean I hate
men. Far from it. The harshest attacks I have ever heard
against Black men come from those women who are emotionally
bound to them and cannot free themselves from a subservient
and silent position. I would never presume to speak about
Black men the way I have heard some of my straight sisters
talk about the men they are attracted to. And of course that
concerns me, because it reflects a situation of
noncommunication in the heterosexual community that is far
more truly threatening than the existence of Black
    Lesbians.”

    **********************************************************************

Today the red-herring of lesbian-baiting is being used in
the Black community to obscure the true face of
racism/sexism. Black women sharing close ties with each
other, politically or emotionally, are not the enemies of
Black men. Too frequently, however, some Black men attempt
to rule by fear those Black women who are more ally than
enemy. These tactics are expressed as threats of emotional
rejection: "Their poetry wasn't too bad but I couldn't take
all those lezzies." The Black man saying this is
code-warning every Black woman present interested in a
    relationship with a man--and most Black women are--that (1)
if she wishes to have her work considered by him she must
eschew any other allegiance except to him and (2) any woman
who wishes to retain his friendship and/or support had
better not be "tainted" by woman-identified interests. . .
    .

All too often the message comes loud and clear to Black
women from Black men: "I am the only prize worth having and
there are not too many of me, and remember, I can always go
elsewhere. So if you want me, you'd better stay in your
place which is away from one another, or I will call you
'lesbian' and wipe you out." Black women are programmed to
define ourselves within this male attention and to compete
with each other for it rather than to recognize and move
    upon our common interests.

The tactic of encouraging horizontal hostility to becloud
more pressing issues of oppression is by no means new, nor
limited to relations between women. The same tactic is used
to encourage separation between Black women and Black men.
In discussions around the hiring and firing of Black faculty
at universities, the charge is frequently heard that Black
women are more easily hired than are Black men. For this
reason, Black women's problems of promotion and tenure are
not to be considered important since they are only "taking
jobs away from Black men." Here again, energy is being
wasted on fighting each other over the pitifully few crumbs
allowed us rather than being used, in a joining of forces to
fight for a more realistic ratio of Black faculty. The
latter would be a vertical battle against racist policies of
the academic structure itself, one which could result in
real power and change. It is the structure at the top which
    desires changelessness and
which profits from these apparently endless kitchen wars.

    Why so threatened, "ANON" ??
Last time I checked, this is "Field's" living room. He pays for the blog. He maintains it. He decides what he wants to post.
If FIELD was upset about the drift any convo was going, he could ask that people keep on topic.

As far as "getting a room" ... my older kids are in CA and I would love to get together with AB and chat ...maybe we should "get a room" the next time I'm on the West Coast. I don't agree with her all the time, but admire her passion, her advocacy, and her willingness to be honest and be engaged.

Ditto Field. I lurk alot on this blog, and there are lots of times when I read something he's posted, and I shake my head and say to myself, "Nope". But he is a person of courage, because he's not intimidated by other viewpoints, or by being challenged by other perspectives.

Or many of the other posters here.

Unless people have a safe place to hash out difficult or uncomfortable issues, we, collectively, are never going to improve the world for our children.

Field opened up this blog to do that. There is something about the anonymity of the internet that allows us to voice opinions that we might not raise at a cocktail party so they remain unaddressed.
If we want to get to the meat of any issue, we all need to be able to air our complaints, our grievances, our fears and our viewpoint without repercussion. That is how we grow and learn and overcome.

There's many times on blogs where I have posted a viewpoint and someone comes along (in a polite and respectful manner) and challenges that viewpoint, and I have to stand back and go, Hey, I never looked at it that way ...thank you.

It's okay to agree to disagree.
I disagree very vigorously with some of my most adored friends. It helps me grow as a person.

ANON, no matter what else happens in this world, I ain't never gonna be a black man. Or a black woman. Likewise, you're never going to know what it's like to live in my skin and see the world through my eyes. We all have unique experiences and perspectives. If we pool those, we can come to a realization that we're more alike than we realized.

ANON, my undergraduate degree is in Human Genetic Engineering with a minor in toxicology. Are you aware, that as a species, we are all greater than 99% similar in our genetic makeup? That the only difference between us is more "culture" than "race" ?

    To recap, ANON:
    - Yep, I think I do love AB. She's a strong, powerful woman and there's lots to admire. If you're not a woman, you've never dealt with misogyny so "get outta here".
-Ditto FN. I don't always see the world through his eyes, but he's living his life with dignity and trying to leave this world a better place than he found it.
-Ditto Jody, Hathor, Granny Standing for Truth......

Have you ever been to a party where you start with one thread of a conversation and end up in a totally different place? Sometimes those are the best experiences.

If my exchanges with AB offend you ....skip them. Much like I skip most of "Constructive"'s crap. There isn't enough Meritage in the world to try and follow his line of thought.

    In closing.

I stated that one of the reasons why Recess was cut was because the SCHOOL DAY being lengthened was taken off of the table.

On a related subject - follow the issue with the high school in Rhode Island. One of the reasons why they terminated the school staff was because they refused the proposed reforms.................of which one of them was - LENGTHENING THE SCHOOL DAY.

Again NCLB does not PRESCRIBE "eliminating recess". The local administrators and policy makers CHOSE to eliminate recess.

  171. So Karen - you have no plan to address the FACTS about Vancouver having the highest HIV infection rates in North America AND, despite a utopian health care service - the advocates are STILL demanding HEALTH CARE?

Of the HIV Infected in Vancouver only 1/3 of them are taking drugs for their condition.

Karen - I take it that you aren't planning to follow up on your claim about Abe Lincoln and the Radical Republicans?

Can we agree that Lincoln was not a "red coat" and thus did not shoot any Black folks?

(Again - remember - "ENSLAVED PEOPLE" not "SLAVES". It was a condition that was imposed upon them not a NOUN indicating what they transformed into )

I am so happy you stated this. If everyone understood how the line of poverty is developed in this county...how often the line is moved up and down...and the different classifications of poverty...they would be well on their way to understanding their

Karen - you are slipping downward into becoming the "Rachel Maddow" of the blog.

Go back and read your statement above.

WHO are the people dictating this fate for "the poor"?

    * GOVERNMENT REDISTRIBUTIONALISTS who are "feeding them" up to this point of passivity?

    OR

    * THE PEOPLE THEMSELVES who, not being content with a "near full stomach" CHOOSE TO organize themselves as EQUAL HUMAN BEINGS into the point where they BREAK PAST the "Welfare Glass Ceiling"? They turn the knowledge of their EQUALITY into the choice to APPLY THE drive that might have them BREAKING INTO PEOPLE'S HOUSES into the DRIVE TO EVALUATE THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT ARE PRESENT in the marketplace and RECEIVE MONEY BY SUPPLYING THE NEED.

When the SUBJECT is misplaced as such then the BAD GUY per one's HARMFUL ACTIONS to the interests of these people will also be misapplied.

Is it possible that THESE PEOPLE who accepted the welfare in order to LIVE AT A STANDARD THAT THEIR OWN PRODUCTIVE ACTIONS DON'T SUPPORT are the people who took the bait? Now they must KEEP VOTING for Progressives just to TREAD WATER and remain in place.

I have video tape of the MENTAL DAMAGE that living in PROJECTS has rendered upon the "Community Cultural Consciousness and COMPETENCE" of a group of people who's life was upset after the Atlanta Housing Authority chose to RAZE their GOVERNMENT OWNED PROPERTY.

OF COURSE the "Poverty Advocates" went after the GOVERNMENT and not the DAMAGE TO THE CONSCIOUSNESS of the people

    -----------------------------------

    ANON-THE-NOT-SO-BRAVE-HEART:

Your question doesn't deserve an answer, but I am going to answer it simply because your prejudices and bigotry are mind-blowing; and I am sure that they are many more like you out there lurking.

The only reason I mentioned I was a white woman is because I had been "outed" by CF during one of his screeds as a "Negress", a proud term, but one HE clearly meant as a slur.

So I stepped up and called him out and laughed in his face. I'm not going to lie and post and have people think I'm a "Negress", when I'm not. Had it not been for CF, it wouldn't have mattered, unless someone asked me.

    Re: "the darkest physician".
    Okay, you're a crazy bigot.

Sometimes the color of one's skin and one's ethnicity DO matter.

Medical issues are one of them.
I was responding to "NOT RJ's" comment he didn't have to worry about melanoma. That is a common misperception, that people with dark skin don't burn, or that they don't have to worry about melanoma.

I also had that misguided belief, but this is not true. It takes more exposure, but black skin will burn, and blacks do get melanoma. However, because of this myth, many don't go to a dermo to get screened.

So I mentioned specifically the fact that he had very dark skin to address a common misperception and hoped to help someone. Don't assume because someone has dark skin they can't burn, get melanoma, etc. So, YES, the fact that he was very dark skinned and still burned WAS relevant to the point I was trying to make.

Black skin also scars differently than white. That's also a fact of life.

    ReplyDelete
  184. "Why weren't you called on the racism of that statement?"

    Um, I don't know why I wasn't outed as a "racist".

After all, this is a blog run by a black man, and seems to have a pretty high percentage of black people reading and commenting on it.

They also don't seem very shy about expressing their opinions and calling it as they see it.

So, I'm guessing that if they thought that my comment about a very dark skinned black man getting a sunburn was racist, then they would have called me out.

But thank goodness they have a wonderful white concerned Liberal like you looking out for them.

    ReplyDelete
  185. high-brow conversation about race, education, welfare,
    ----------------------------------
    Wow, you really are threatened!

If it makes you feel any better, I have been outed as a "Racist", and my personnel file in one of the most Progressive associations in DC says so -- that I had to go to mandatory Diversity Training.

Yep, I got to work in a very left think tank, responding to a blind ad. Everyone there had impeccable Progessive-Activist credentials. In fact, their credentials were so pristine, advocating on behalf of the poor and minorities, that they were VERY accomplished at looking right through the young black lady who was our receptionist, the young black man who was our security, the bubbling young black intern in our library.

And, it came out later in a meeting, that had they known my husband was in the military, they never would have hired me, so real and raw was their disgust for anyone in the armed services. They made it clear I deliberately hid that from them (Not, but I digress).

Anyways, in this lovely, "tolerant" soup, the people who stepped forward to be my friends just happened to be black. It was clear I was an outsider, and it was the blacks who invited me out to lunch with them, to the baby showers in their homes, etc, like I was a real, genuine person! I never got ANY invitations from my "liberal" colleagues once I was outed as being married to a "baby killer".

So, anyways, there was a rumor that the black security guard was going to file a discrimination suit, and HR was very concerned, and I got called into the office, because they wanted to know what "the people were thinking".
(I kid you not). And, I, clueless, was, "um, thinking about WHAT specifically?". And we went through this ridiculous Kabuki theatre where they would come out and ask what they wanted to know.

And then I made the mistake of saying this, terrible, unforgiveable slur:

Are you talking about Ray, the black guy in Security? (because we also had a "Raymond" who worked in the same area and he was white).

And then the full-on freak out happened.

"They" are not black! They are "African-American! You can't call them black, that's offensive and racist and insensitive!"

And then I had to watch a 20 minute video on diversity sensitivity training and got a note in my personnel file.

So I missed lunch with my black, oops, "African American" friends, and of course, they hunted me down and asked what was up so.

So, I told them. I was cornered to find out if there was "trouble" in the "African American" working population, that I was a racist, and I had to watch a diversity training video to cleanse my soul.

I then apologized to them for insulting them this entire time, that I didn't realize what an offensive racist I was, I'm an idiot, I didn't grow up in the US,etc etc etc.

And they laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed.

And from then on, they made a point of introducing me as their
RAAAAACCCCCIST friend Karen, much like whites like to say, This is my BLACK friend.....

So, yeah, I'm a racist. The white, Bryn Mawr liberal arts grad HR lady said so. It's official.

    --------------------------------
Wow, there just is NO END of all kinds of stereotyping with this crowd is there?

    Unbelievable.

Thanks for deciding I'm a "rich white woman". I'm sure you'll be sending me a link to a video explaining how I need to be guilty for everything and anything in my life due to the fact that I'm WHITE. and RICH.

ANON, just after my husband turned 30, he took me away for a romantic weekend for our anniversary. We talked about what our hopes and dreams were for the next 30 years of our lives together.

He came clean and stated his dream had always been to fly military jets but that it was too late for him.

I laughed and said, "Well, you should go for it" and helped him fill out the applications and drove him to the simulator for his test ride.

This was very selfish and cynical of me, because I knew that he was past the age cut off for military flying. But I was planning on getting martyr points for being such a supportive spouse!!! (see how we women think .....)

Unknown to ME, is that his prior service time gave him an age waiver. So, HIS gift to ME on Christmas eve was a letter stating he reported to OCS on Jan 6th....

And yes, prior to this adventure, we had a very comfortable life ... at that time, he was working at a big Bank in New York, and had he stayed, I am sure we would be quite "rich" now, even by most measures, if I use the material success of his colleagues who stayed there as any indicator.

I don't want to make a long story, but we sold everything we owned, and my former-banker husband stuffed it into an investment as a college fund for our then very young kids. And when we got to his first duty station, we had no "real" money but used his GI benefits to buy a house with $500 down and a VA loan of the balance, and we bought a second hand VW Rabbit with 87,000 miles on it. That's what we had.

So, look up the military pay charts. If starting your life over again from scratch at 31 with 3 kids and a pregnant wife on a 1st LT's pay makes one "rich", then, yep, you called me out.

    ReplyDelete
  189. @Agape:

That's a great life story. So, what's his rank now and what is he flying- and are you happy?

    ReplyDelete
  191. @ANON 12:05
He's no longer flying --he did fly EA-6B's (Prowlers).. he was injured and lost his flight status ... however, he lived and we have lost really close friends, so you count your blessings ....and in a rare exception, even though he isn't in flight status, they allowed him to keep his wings... which always prompts people to ask his story ....

he was transitioned and retrained in a field that makes good use of his analytical skills and background...

deployed to iraq X2 & was combat injured ... i advocated for $$ for brain trauma injury before he deployed, so it was ironic that we would need those $$ for his rehab..

he just finished a Command tour ...as a Commander's spouse, if you care and want to support, you end up being an unpaid social worker, esp. if the unit deploys ... lots of military spouses don't get the credit they deserve for the hours of volunteer work they provide ...

yes .... we're happy ... we're not rich in $$ but rich in experiences and friends ...we want for nothing and are grateful for what we have ... i wish i could say the same for most of our college-era friends who are divorced or getting divorced ...we're planning his retirement and our life beyond this ...

    thanks for asking ...
