Take a bow Liz.

On this the night of the Academy Awards, let us take the time to honor the best supporting actress in a political drama, shall we? If only our friend Joe McCarthy was around to give out the award.

"As ThinkProgress has noted, Liz Cheney and Bill Kristol’s Keep America Safe organization released a web ad on Monday targeting yet-to-be named Justice Department lawyers who had worked on Guantanamo detainee issues as the “al Qaeda 7.” “Whose values do they share?” asked the ad over an image of seven silhouettes juxtaposed with images of Arabic men. When Politico’s Ben Smith first reported on the attack ad, he noted that it “questions the loyalties of Justice Department lawyers.”

But in an interview today on the Washington Times’ “America’s Morning News” radio show, Cheney denied that the ad questioned “anybody’s loyalty”:

HOLMES: Liz, good morning. So you released a fairly provocative ad, I have to say. And you ask the question “whose values” [does] Eric Holder share? In your view, whose values does he share?

CHENEY: Well, what the ad does — and actually it doesn’t question anybody’s loyalty. What the ad does is it says that there are nine lawyers in the Justice Department who used to represent al Qaeda terrorists and the Attorney General will only tell us who two of them are and we want the American people to have the right to know who the others are.

Guest host Amy Holmes continued to press Cheney on the point, repeating her question. “But your ad does raise the question ‘whose values’ does Eric Holder share. Who would you say?” Cheney dodged the question, stating that she thinks Holder “believes that you can defeat terror, you can win this war we’re engaged in by treating terrorism like law enforcement.” Listen here:

Cheney is simply lying. Not only does the ad suggest that the lawyers might “share” the “values” of al Qaeda, but it also flashes an image of a headline from the far right Investor’s Business Daily asking if the Justice Department was the “Department of Jihad?” “
Just whose side are they on?” asked the editorial.

When Politico’s Smith first reported on the ad, Keep America Safe spokesman Michael Goldfarb gave him a quote that essentially accused the lawyers of treason, saying that they “did far more than represent criminals.” “They have propagandized on behalf of our enemies, engaging in a worldwide smear campaign against the CIA, the U.S. military and the United States itself while we are at war,” said Goldfarb. On Tuesday, Keep America Safe released a fundraising letter in Cheney’s name that used the exact same language:

Former Bush administration officials have pushed back against the ad. “While it’s legitimate for the public to inquire about the past work of DOJ political appointees, we need to recognize that our judicial system cannot function without pro bono counsel, and it doesn’t make a lawyer less patriotic just because he or she has represented a criminal or terrorist suspect,” former U.S. attorney and homeland security adviser Kenneth Wainstein told the Washington Post. “It’s beyond a cheap shot to suggest that a lawyer is an al-Qaeda sympathizer because he advocates a detainee’s position in the Supreme Court,” said former Bush White House lawyer Reginald Brown." Yes, the Oscar should go to Liz Cheney; for her wonderful supporting role of the conservative movement. Or, maybe not; since she isn't acting.

Oh, and for more information about those evil terrorist, the al Qaeda 7, go to this link.

Brother Field I think this is one thats almost too ridiculous and outlandish to comment on.

But that Oscar fiasco with Monique winning that best supporting Oscar for the most sick, crazy, hateful, trifling depraved and morally bankrupt black woman I have ever seen displayed in cinema anywhere is something to talk about. It was so predictable that someone from that crap would win an award.

I am finishing a commentary piece on right now. I knew like many other black folks knew that trash was going to win something.

I really believe however that a discussion about why esp. most whites viewed this film as somehow triumphant and blacks seemed to view it as horror and thinly veiled stereoptypical black pathology would give us a good idea where we are in the area of race relations.

Personally I can hardly get over that this monstrosity made such a stir. I am appalled that otherwise intelligent folks failed to see that there was absolutely nothing redemptive about this piece of black exploitation!
Or did you purposely duck this one?

The game that is being played here is simple. That the very idea of providing counsel for certain undesirable parties (read: suspected terrorist) can not possibly be carried by this particular administration because the right-wing meme floating around is that the Obama administration is soft on terror.

Never mind the fact that the Obama administration has caught or killed more terrorists and gotten more actionable Intel from captured terrorists that the Cheney/Bush administration. And they didn't have to waterboard anybody.

The far-right wing thought process on this is as follows.

    Holder is brown.
    Obama is brown.
    Islamic terrorists are usually brown.
All the brown people I know look out for one another.
    Brown people aren't really patriotic.
Brown looks out for brown=white looking out for white.
So brown is looking out for brown.
They said Obama was "palling around with terrorists" during the election.
    Terrorists are usually brown.
Obama and Holder support terrorism, because they are brown.

Yeah, that sounds simplistic and stupid, but trust me, people think like that.

And yes, Mo'Nique won playing a stereotype, but so did Marlon Brando playing a Italian mafia don, or Tom Hanks playing a gay man, then a dullard who could run fast. It's called acting. The best way not to be seen as a stereotype is to not let that stereotype define you. She acted her ass off, and she deserves to celebrate her win on her own terms. She isn't the African-American ambassador to the UN, for crying out loud.

Interesting, I saw the movie and knew she was going to win when I saw it. And yes, it was an awful character. Hmmm, so was Denzel's in Trainng Day, and Halle getting her freak on with Billy Bob in Monster's Ball. (Both winners) That Lee Daniels is my homie, but he sure knows how to put some ugly characters on the big screen.:)

  6. Simply put, Ms. Cheney is the one engaging in treasonous behavior. That she cannot and does not (nor does her father) believe in the fundamental principals of our country, suggests it is HER values that are suspect. Rachel Maddow has been begging her to come on her show... Personally, I would love to see that interview.

Liz Cheney has a LONG career as a spur upon your backside ahead of her. As a commentator and political operative I'd say she is even more effective than dear ole dad who has a bad ticker.

Though you might go and dance on Dick's grave when he does succumb, rest assure that Liz is going to keep up the fight against Progressive Fundamentalism.

I think that the BROADER QUESTION is indeed legitimate.

With so many Gitmo-ACLU-type Lawyers now entrenched in the Obama-Holder Justice Department will they work to DEFEND the United States against operatives who seek to reign terror upon us - or will they, like Jody, make note that the Killer Whale that has her by both legs and is thrashing her all about, intending to drown her IS PROTECTED BY THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT and thus should not be killed. Since Jody is NOT protected by the Endangered Species act she reasons that if one of them should succumb it should be her.

The biggest indictment against the application of Progressivism to the rule of law is see WITHIN OUR INNER CITIES. The HUMAN BEINGS who are ensnared along with the criminal class SUFFER THE MOST yet they turn to their OPPRESSORS (the progressive politicians) for relief.

The worst situation for you all is to be LEFT ALL ALONE with your THEORIES TO RENDER YOUR STANDARD OF LIVING. You'll be screwed.

Indeed "Precious" hit too close to home for some people. Ironically "Soul Plane" did not have the same effect upon them.

I thought that "Precious" was a great movie. I plan to purchase a copy of it tomorrow.

It was discomforting to some BECAUSE it showed a group of people who's character and outlook in life was GENERATIONALLY DAMAGED by the Social Programs that the haters generally support for "THE LEAST OF THESE".

'Precious" showed STRENGTH in the wake of individual oppressors who did not have "GOP" t-shirts. This some how distorted the compass of my friend Mellaneous, it seems.

The thought that the Monique character 'made nice' with the Social worker so that she might keep her flow of resources was an OFFENSE!!!!! In the mind of Jody - these should be DUE TO HER - REGARDLESS(!!!!) of how she ACTS for the Government agent sent to check upon her.

Had the Monique character MOONED the government worker - not a penny should be removed from her entitlement.

Indeed the movie "Precious" stepped on many toes.

Add to it there are TWO OBESE , brown-skinned, BLACK ACTRESSES who are featured at the awards with the latest designer wear and jewels and thus some of those who HAD BEEN attacking Hollywood's "lack of DIVERSITY" as it maintain's it own standard of beauty will BE EXPOSED, as they too have a beauty standard that THESE TWO fall outside of. To them they should be closeted and KEPT OFF OF THE RUNWAY for being:

    * Too Black

    My dear friend Jody:

I heard Maria Hinahosa (sp?) from "PBS Now" (leftwing show) link the advancement of WOMEN with ABORTION.

In her warped view the notion that a woman can CHOOSE to detach a gestating human being from the walls of her womb, thus starving it of the necessary nutrients was an EMPOWERING ACT.

My dear Jody - do you know those Russian eggs where one is stacked in another?

Let's pretend that the WOMB is tucked within the "Stomach Lining of the BEAST" that you and Mellaneous live within.

If the BEAST - who one's his own body CHOSE to disconnect YOU and other "Unwanted Gestaters" from attachment to its stomach lining because YOU WERE NOT WANTED............

and then it said to the world "I expressed CONTROL OVER WHAT IS GROWING INSIDE OF MY BELLY thus I have ADVANCED in my POWER as a Dragon"......you would say WHAT about the line of thinking of this BEAST?

I understand that with you "Growing Statist Power = FREEDOM"

Should we now conclude that "Exercising The CHOICE To Starve Off A Gestating Being = POWER"?

    POWER over whom Jody?
But the ULTIMATE "LEAST OF THESE". The LEAST OF THESE who have not gestationally developed arms to FIGHT AGAINST YOUR assault - right Mellanous?

Einstein, the first black to win the Oscar was Hattie McDaniel for her performance as "Mammy" in "Gone With The Wind."

It's obvious to me that Hollywood is afraid of presenting beautiful, heroic black folks in film.

I can't recall seeing a romantic comedy featuring two beautiful black people since "For Love of Ivy" with Sidney Poitier and Abby Lincoln.

What's up Lee Daniels? Oprah? Spike Lee?

Y'all can't concieve of beautiful black folks in love on screen either?

On the Holder and Justice Dept ad, these right wing folks especially Liz Cheney and her gang know better they know that Holder nor any of those Justice Dept lawyers are not aligned with terrorists. Its called propaganda. Its an attempt to reach the simple minded i agree with that.

The stereotype played by Brando and Hanks all had some redemptive aspects to them. The Godfather was concerned about his family. In Philadelphia Hanks as a gay man was victimized.

And nobody was talking about her being an ambassador the problem is that the role was totally unredemptive in a society that too often wants to see blacks as unredemptive.

  15. I'm glad Mo'nique won the Oscar, but as UTS pointed out (hell Jadakiss pointed this out) our people only win at the Academy for playing coons harlots. And of course, Sandra Bullock won for playing Jane Goodall of the slums -- a rich white woman saving the Negro savage. That predictable tripe won over Meryl Streep literally transforming Julia Childs? Hmmm....

Well, at least Kathryn Bigelow won for best director and trumped her ex-husband's behind. I've only seen a few previews but from what I've seen 'The Hurt Locker' is the artsiest war movie ever.

And Lynne Cheney, well, what can you say? She's been a neo-con darling since her father and Smirk left office with their tails between their legs. This half-baked nonsense she's spewing is no surprise.

Uhmm...OK...I was just shocked that you of all people are into Tyler Perry. As usual, you go off (way off) the deep end. "uncle tom nigger". Negro please!! I'm a tom because I think Tyler Perry movies are modern minstrel shows? I guess Black people who don't like rap music are sellouts too.**

And believe it or not, I've watched several Tyler Perry movies (my gf and my mother love them). The only one that didn't make me embarrassed to Black was 'Why did I get Married?'

The problem is perry movies are mostly ignorant ghetto nonsense with pretty bougie backdrops. Yes, these people have education and money (relatively speaking) but rarely do his characters act as if they have any sense.

And as usual, you're so focus on sniping enemies to miss UTS was taking your side -- Hollywood only celebrates Black women portrayed as whores(Berry), criminals(Monique, Whoopi)or maids (McDaniel). Jennifer Hudson was blip, and that's only because white folks love to watch Negroes sing.

Not that Black men fair better (the only Black male Oscar winner who didn't play a thug, a slave, a criminal, a drug addict or a straight coon was Poitier. And he played the ultimate 'Magic Negro' -- a Black man sent by God to slave for old white women). But being Black and a woman is a double mark against you in Hollywood.

As much as a I don't respect the woman's politics -- I would love to see the Condi Rice story on the Big Screen. A film about a Black woman to rise that level would be awesome. But, that would require white folks to show Black women as a something other than their servants or animals.

Alicia, stop looking to attack people and actually listen and think about what people are saying. If anyone has a myopic POV, its you.

The bottom line is that YOU need to go back and READ the savage attacks upon Gabby by various Black opinion writers. (Courtland Malloy, a few Black movie reviewers, etc).

You also need to watch various interviews given by Gabby. She said that ALL OF HER LIFE people (Black people) have attempted to MAKE HER FEEL BAD ABOUT HER SELF because of her SKIN COLOR and her SIZE.

SHE REFUSES TO ALLOW ANYONE TO MAKE HER FEEL BAD.

This is exactly what I'm talking about.

No knock on Chris but he ain't no sex symbol.

The few romantic comedy films that blacks get to act in usually have comic/clown types like Rock playing the lead.

With their white counterparts you see George Clooney and Matt McConaghey not Jason Alexander or Larry the Cable guy.

Hollywood is afraid of beautiful blacks on screen.

Rick James said 25 years ago that his record company would get letters from white parents who went ballistic because their daughters had pictures of Rick on their walls.

  84. I can't believe it. I feel like giving CF a cyber hug.

As for the movie Precious, I understand and sympathize with everyone's point of view equally - except for any contempt anyone may have for just seeing an obese black female on the big screen.

As for Tyler Perry movies, I feel both black men and black women either like or dislike the movies for different reasons.

However, I think it's dishonest for some black males to claim they dislike Perry's movies due to any negative portrayal of "black women". I suspect most black men who dislike the movies do so because Perry often expose the transgressions of some black men and the sexist abusive hierarchy towards black females in the black community.

On the other hand, black females who tend to dislike Perry's movies do so mainly because of the exploitish buffoonery Maddea adding again to our negative image, or for the subliminal messages telling black women to settle, or to feel they can't find happiness without a man etc.

Wow...three posts in response to my one. Why is it unable to consolidate all of its thoughts in a single post? Why?! And, the troll has some nerve calling someone scatter-brained when it posts spastically.

APOI, calling it a cow (or female or human) is an insult to all ungulates, women, and other human beings. The troll has its own Infraclass: Intellectual Pygmy. But, I do agree that it eats shit.

AB- ditto I respect what and who you are and the fact that you stand up for those who can't stand for themselves, which is real Field Negro behavior.

I see anon wants you to do what he can't do and that is out debate me (lol)

I feel you, we can agree to disagree.

I know I am going to sound like a sap for saying this but I really wish that you and UTS and LA could disagree without dissing one another. US black folks are all ultimately in this together no matter what our perspective, liberal conservative, straight or gay. But I think we should examine our beliefs and assumptions and honestly ask does this lead us forward?

AB - on the Tyler Perry points I agree with you. However the character Madea works my nerves and the fact that Tyler won't hire a real black woman to play her part now that he can afford to bothers me as well.

But I get something out of all his movies. As silly as it sounds I feel like he takes on real issues and puts real folks on the screen. But I like many others can do without some of the buffoonery though.

In the diary of a Mad Black Woman the female lead I thought was realistic and it was redeeming to watch her find herself. There was another Madea movie in which the husband to be was beating the fiance I thought that though Madea was a bit over the top the idea that the woman should defend herself was put out there very well.

I too liked Daddy's Girls and the fact that he touched on the bourgeosie girlfriends hating on the working class boyfriend. He touched on something real with that one.

I especially liked the part in the Madea movie in which he used Maya Angelou I believe to talk to the young people about the importance of their history and their roots. I seldom hear folks in real life talking to young people about their roots.

    @Uptownsteve

Get a Netflix account and ask for the good movies like:
    Chisolm '72
    Akeelah and the Bee
    The Preacher's Wife
    Strangers in Good Company
The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and that movie mentioned by Rottengid is Daddy's Little Girls

Happy Viewing, I'm sure there are more out there that others could suggest for you.

    Aloha from Makaii

p.s Monique deserves the Oscar, it was acting and the movie does have a positive message but I admit it was painful to watch the entire movie to see at the end that Precious did become a caring adult attempting to care for her children.

Hey ya'll AB, anyone- lets talk Color Purple in comparison to Precious.

In Color Purple many black men were outraged about the character Mister and how he was betrayed. I felt the fear and concerns that this is how black men were going to be viewed by the naive and the uninformed in the white community.

But all of the black men in the movie did not beat their women nor were they all overtly sexist. And it was true that some black men had indeed abused their spouses.

And it was indeed true however that sexism was rampant in our community so it was an invention, though it may have been a bit embarassing when exposed to the light of day.

Just as importantly Mister had a heart remember he sent the money to allow Ms. Cellies kids to visit her from Africa. He had a soul he was redeemable.

Ms Celie, Shug and Sofia were powerful black women who were independent minded and real human beings. Ms.Celie got her courage up and joined them. It was redemptive.

The movie even gave hints to how the idea of spousal abuse can be passed from one generation to another. Remember Harpo asked Celie what to do with Sofia and Sofia who had been abused all her married life to Mister said, "Beat her." That was at least a bit didactic and instructional.

Shug's dad had rejected her because she left her daughter behind to pursue her dreams of being a singer. But even he embraced his daughter in the scene where she sings "God is trying to tell you something"

"See Daddy sinners have soul too," she said to her Dad, again it was redemptive.

Can anyone tell me how Precious was redemptive?

You will never believe what the author of the book the movie is based on Sapphire said about some folks when relating why she wrote the book.

Remember, the troll's alliances change quickly. Once upon a time, it was civil with and amenable to UTS and LAC. Conversely, it and LAA were mortal enemies. The only person that it has had a consistent adversarial is APOI.

It will only be a matter of time before mellaneous does something to piss the troll off.

Right! There are PLENTY of educated Black folks in Tyler's movies, for example Why Did I get Married had an MD, a JD, a PhD, and a business owner!!! And his movies very accurately IMHO, reflect the diversity of black life in the US!!!

Damn UTS, what da' hell are you looking for fantasy land?

  138.
I can't believe it. I feel like giving CF a cyber hug.
LA Audio:

If you don't understand anything else from me per my multi-page speeches - understand this:

I BELIEVE THAT EVERY HUMAN BEING ON THIS EARTH IS 100% EQUAL.

Most people look at this statement and then demand EQUAL resources and or treatment.

For me this is only one side of the equation of equality.

I also make note that EQUALITY means that we should expect EQUAL responsibility from an EQUAL PERSON.

We must also accept that a GROUP OF EQUAL PEOPLE:

    * Can display BIGOTRY
    * Can display INJUSTICE
    * Can display bias toward Physical Attributes

In all of these cases - THESE POWERS MUST BE MANAGED.

  141. anon:

i agree with you about the beauty and transformation of many men in the color purple

some male characters were omitted even from the book...ie shug's male lovers before and after she wed celie

she left celie for a youunger man during a mid life crisis/affair...then she returned to celie who took her back and they lived happily ever after

mister redeemed himself totally and became a kind man

    another book
"posessing the secret of joy" is part 2 to the color purple

it deals with celie's children and their marriages and lives and the female genital mutilation of adam's african wife etc...
it is an even deeper and more beautiful story than pt 1

    ___

what was redeeming in precious was that she LIVED and escaped!
and that so many girls who live like this daily can escape too...

anyone who has ever been an OTHER and tortured can relate to precious..her pain and her ability to love herself

paula patton and her wife were IDEAL lesbians...femmes..professional...noble...warriors..like me and my gay friends!

in the book paula's mother despises her because she is gay...dicedicyicy would have been great in that role had they not omitted it from the film...

i also adore the subtle realistic nuances in the film...ie precious has to see herself as a wf in the mirror to feel beautiful

like a song my sweet honey in the rock "no mirrors in my nana's house"...check the deep lyrics

SO many moms who side with men who rape their kids NEED to see monique...she brought that evil to light expertly!!!...i loved the line where precious realizes they are gay and how her mom rapes her and gaybashes...but these gays do not rape kids!...classic!
