A Kitty told me.

You all know me, I am not a blatherskite. I don't like to delve into the salacious and juciy gossip out there. Strictly the serious stuff like societal problems and politics for the kid.....OK OK, that's bullshit. I love a juicy story as much as the next guy. So with that in mind I have to write about Oprah and her former paramour.

Now there are strange couples and there are strange couples. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but Oprah and John Tesh just seems kind of strange. I know she likes her men tall but...

"Before Oprah loved Stedman, there was John Tesh.
An exclusive excerpt from
Kitty Kelley's upcoming tell-all Oprah Winfrey biography claims the talk-show queen enjoyed a 1970s romance with an unlikely live-in lover: John Tesh.
The towering 6-foot-6 Tesh and a barely out-of-her-teens Winfrey shared her
Nashville apartment until he bolted in the middle of the night, according to the first-ever look inside the book, obtained by the Daily News.
According to Kelley, the "social pressure" on an interracial couple in
Tennessee at that time proved too much for Tesh to handle.
"He said one night he looked down and saw his white body next to her black body and couldn't take it anymore," another Tesh ex-paramour told Kelley." [story]

Oh lawd John, what were you thinking? Still, don't feel bad, I could have bought shares of Disney's stocks a few years back and I passed. You must have the same sinking feeling thinking about what could have been. Oprah!? Just think John, you let a little thing like interracial dating come between you and millions of dollars. Mr. and Mrs. John Tesh. That has a nice ring to it. But sorry, it's too late to get her down the aisle, now. Just ask Stud...I mean Stedman.

Kitty Kelley, I sure hope you ain't lying about the "Queen of daytime." Because if you are, she will sue your ass and it won't be pretty. And I can't say that I would blame her. I mean just imagine, you put something like this out there and the next thing you know it will show up on all types of blogs.

    Field cut it out (lol)

Field ya'll I just read some of the comments section under Roland Martins commentary piece asking if the Confederates were terrorist.

    http://www.cnn.com/2010/OPINION/04/11/martin.confederate.extremist/index.html?hpt=C1

The Tea party stuff was wild but these comments say that there are people living among us that are from another planet.

This is a little unnerving. Even if one thinks that Martin is guilty of a bit of overkill in his comparisons, there is no way to defend the actions of the Confederacy and its willingness to go to war to defend its so-called way of life.

Here is a juicy sample from one commentor who is obviously a bit educated. But miseducated nevertheless.

"For anyone who still doesn't know, the Civil War was not over slavery. Slavery was the pretext. The real reason for the Civil War was the industrial north vs. the agrarian south. The North wanted to expand industrialism and the South wanted the North to mind its own business."

The problem with this statement is that the SO-CALLED BENIGN AGRARIAN SOUTH was a SLAVOCRACY. He is only part right it was a clash of systems but the southern system included dehumanization of what were obvioulsly living and breathing human beings.

  5. Here I am reading your post on the Supreme Court after reading Robert Reich's latest post about using immigration as a way to save Boomer entitlements. It's a new spin and I like it: robertreich.org.

Anyway, then your post on John Tesch and Oprah pops up! WTF?!# So out of character for you. Such gossip and from Kitty Kelley no less. Have you ever read one of her books? She's one step below TMZ. And John Tesh is so smarmy.

"Robert Reich's latest post about using immigration as a way to save Boomer entitlements. It's a new spin and I like it: robertreich.org."

This was on NPR the other day. There were so many questions from readers whether this was a reasonable proposal. So they had USC Professor Dowell Myers do an analysis of it. He calculates that the immigration solution would only address 1/4 of the problem, but that it would be a much needed immediate boost.

Yep they are getting richer each day.

Gregory did you read the comments under Roland Martins commentary.

I think Martin was a little incendiary because the real culprits were the monied owners of Southern industry and the large plantation owners.

The soldiers were more dupes and cannon fodder than terrorists. But they weren't saints, they were clearly in collusion.

Motives for fighting for the Confederacy were many. Robert E Lee joined the Confederate Army only after his home state of Virginia seceded-a move he disagreed with. Longstreet joined the Confederacy after deciding his ultimate loyalty lay with his home state. If many Confederate soldiers were dupes, then so were most union men. Union soldiers (usually poor laborers) had little to gain or lose from the outcome of the Civil War. Butchers like Grant sacrificed over 100,000 men to win a four year war that should have lasted months. you could just as easily call most union soldiers dupes as well.

    Mell,
Yes, Martin was a bit incendiary but sometimes you have to light a fire to shed light on a topic.

Great granpappy Cletus may be a hero to his family today but the cause he fought for is hardly considered to be universally noble. As Martin pointed out, in today's context he might even be considered to be a terrorist, clearly meant as a warning to the teabaggers yearning for the good old days when secession seemed like a good idea.

I think Yogi Berra said that nostalgia just not what it used to be. Clearly there are a lot of people that don't like to be reminded just what great granpappy Cletus was fighting to maintain.

    Mack Is Lying:

    Thank you.
You have just single handedly acknowledged EVERYTHING that I have been arguing about the Black Quasi-Socialist Progressive Fundamentalist Racism Chaser and your proclivity toward BLACK INFERIORITY.

    1) low-level gangsterism and thievery = INFERIOR assaults upon Black people DESPITE the fact that they:

    A) Kill Black people (or do you not watch the news?)
    B) Wage assaults upon the businesses in our community forcing them out of business as COSTS go up and PROFITS go down from having to replace broken windows OR hire new clerks because the last one is either killed or has quit due to Post Traumatic Street Pirate Robbery Syndrome
    C) Deny the rest of our children a quality education because the "Pirates In Training" are disruptive toward classroom instruction

    Mack Is Lying:
You fear what the White man MIGHT DO to our community more than you are concerned what the Street Pirate IS DOING to our community.

Can you tell me that you see these two HUMAN BEINGS AS EQUAL?

Thus far the Whites that you are speaking of have learned that the best thing they can do to up end the agenda of the Black Progressive-Fundamentalists is to MOVE AWAY AND LEAVE YOU ALL ALONE TO RUN YOUR COMMUNITIES with respect to your ideology.

In due time you all will be running back to them talking about SOCIAL CONTRACTS with each other in the name of Social Justice.

Stay tuned Mack Is Lying: I just grabbed a week's worth of news clips in my series "What Is Making Black Women Cry Today On The Evening News?".

I was so happy when the Black woman shot the Street Pirate in the BACK SIDE. He broke into her house with a ladder and she used her 2nd Amendment Ammo to teach him a lesson that would lead to a protest march had the police done the same thing.

  41. Like Dolly Parton, there is a "close woman friend" in Oprah's life. Meanwhile, Dolly is married and Oprah has Steadman. Clearly the men serve a P.R. function, and little else.

Even the name of "Steadman" is amusing. Like the lead male character in the TV show Thirty Something -- Michael Steadman. He provided the image of The Steady Dependable Man.

Anyway, what Truth Quotient does Kitty Kelley rate? It seems to me she's willing to repeat, or perhaps impute almost any story that will sell her books.

Moreover, it's unlikely there's any legal risk in manufacturing a tale of co-habitation for Oprah and Tesh. Neither suffers from the story. No reputations are tarnished or careers harmed.

As for Kelley sticking her mind probe into the head of Tesh and tapping that long-ago, middle-of-the-night thought about the Oprah/Tesh skin color contrast, well, with skills like that she can put all the clairvoyants, mediums and card readers out of business.

Aren't you according to you a Christian who has been calling himself a journalist?

What's your point? I am in fact as I said an activist, a preacher and a journalist.

    CF said:

"An Armed Citizenry is the most effective means of quelling the swam of Street Piracy which is injuring our communities."

Are you calling on vigilante justice? Is this where all your ranting and raving about black street crime is leading? And is that consistent with Jesus message of love and forgiveness?

Is this really the best solution you could come up with?

Why can't you wrap your mind around the fact that it is the conditions that are producing the pathology of street crime?

In the black community add a feeling of self-hatred induced by the knowledge that one is living in a society that takes a dim view of ones humanity along with the very real specter of societal and institutional discrimination. Add to that limited opportunities and you have a perfect brew for hopelessness and aimlessness that are a perfect breeding ground for crime.

The white community is experiencing its own alienation. Since you seem to be glued to the crime pages, haven't you read about the crimes that whites have committed against their family members and co-workers and fellow citizens. Crime is not a "black thing."

Or have you not paid attention to the latest economic crimes, which have been committed by Wall Street, types, lawyers and other white business folks. What motivated these folks to steal I mean they weren't being discriminated against they had the best education and they were already doing well financially.

  54. A comment about guns...I will say this, I do think that if people can have guns they can protect themselves against urban, suburban and rural terrorism.

My husband and his family lived right outside of Yosemite, in Mariposa years ago. The Metzger clan had an installation there and they had a church of the creator site not too far down the road from my husband and his families property.

One of my husbands friends, a young birracial boy, was gunned down by a Neo Nazi skinhead. They never 'caught' who shot the boy but there were suspicions...

I am almost certain that the Neo Nazi jerkwad was not carrying LEGALLY registered weapons. The problem with gun control policy is that it presupposes that people will be honest enough to apply the regulations when buying and selling guns. But if you hang out with any gun nut (and I have in the foothills of California), you'd realize that very few gun owners register their guns according to the laws of their state or the Federal government. There are enough guns out there that the system is completely skirted nine times out of ten.

Strict gun control will really only hurt law abiding citizens from defending themselves AGAINST TERRORISTS like those Neo Nazis, who have caches of ILLEGALLY imported weapons.

Ala Hiram Revels, I do believe that most gun control laws are rooted in a good notion, but are near impossible to implement and in some sense restrict a person's ability to defend themselves when they need it the most.

  55. And I challenge ANYBODY who has ever kicked it in the California foothills (Mariposa, Coulterville, Groveland etc) to say that I'm wrong.

  68. On gun control -- there's little reason for sane thinking citizens to have guns in a modern state. I understand MR's plight, visiting my gf in Fresno county. But for the most part, guns cause more harm than good. For those who hold to their rifles and glocs, let me break it down how silly it is:

Defend yourself from the "government" -- yeah, it worked so well David Koresh and Operation MOVE. If anything a small arsenal will attract more law enforcement and not send them away. Like Bill Maher said, a guns kind of useless against a government with napalm and tanks.

Scaring off robbers -- Uhm, no. Many crooks and thugs get their guns by stealing them from homes. But honestly, a good neighborhood watch does more to scare of gang bangers and drug dealers than that .38 you have under the bed. You're more likely to shoot yourself or your dog than to take out a thief.

Hunting -- First of all a hunting rifle is different than an Uzi. You don't need an AK-47 to hunt a deer.
Last point is just my personal pet peeve against hunting, so please forgive me.
But almost no one in America needs to hunt. Unless you live in the mountains alone, leave Bambi alone and go to the grocery store.

There are exceptions. If you're alone in the boondocks with the Klan, a 9 mil may be necessary. And like I said, moose meat makes sense if you're working the Alaskan pipelines, far from civilization. For all else, there are smarter ways to defend ourselves in the modern world than guns.

    ReplyDelete
  69. LAC, where I live there is a town called Salida. It is about five miles from my home North. They burned crosses there every spring until 1996. They stopped because the county got them on air pollution. They burned these crosses on their own land but donned KKK robes. In 1996. Right down the road from my house. They had the white knights of the kkk out in Keyes, CA which is about fifteen miles down the road from me. I went there all the time when I tutored private clients. It is eery. I go wherever I please because it is my right, but you can still feel a bit nervous in those parts. And mind you Mariposa is just about fifty miles up the road from my house. They still have NeoNazis that stay out there, and I have family there to this day.

When you talk of Fresno County, and perhaps needing a gun is it due to gang violence or racism or both? Fresno is a couple hours drive down the road from my house.

I agree that you don't need an uzi to go hunting. But I don't think that hunting is useless and we are certainly going to put our boy in hunting classes when he is old enough. Marksmanship is a must for any person that wields a gun or weapon they aim remotely.

I think that many Blacks in urban areas don't have a clue as to what Blacks in rural and suburban areas are going through. I have lived in urban areas and the realities are such that I champion gun ownership as does Rikyrah.

They are being terrorized by people who don't legally purchase guns in the first place1

Like I said, I don't care for hunting personally. Chasing down a wild animal for sport (and not survival) just seems wrong. I'm also vegetarian so no surprise.

Fresno County has many problems with racism, primarily from many towns literally chasing Black folks out after 6 PM. My mother also grew up in South Carolina -- where certain parts have not racial progressed based the 1940's.

Even then, I'd say that until Black folks stand united against this nonsense, the racists just pick us off one by one. Violence, particularly gun violence, is the very last resort -- only because it often cause more problems than it solves.

I still stand by my belief that in a modern western society, we don't really need to pack heat. It ain't the wild west. If you've got issues with gang bangers -- call the cops. That's what they're paid to do. If the cops are the problem, address it through political action.

Its amazing how Americans are so quick to pick a weapon and forget that we have laws and political structures so we don't have to blow each others brains out to fix things.

I can tell you from personal experience that law enforcement is almost one hundred percent ineffective in dealing with gangs and gang violence. Otherwise we wouldn't hear stuff on the news every night about this gang and that gang etc.

I don't mean to be cynical but have lived in East Oakland where a man was shot and killed in front of our home. Or when a crackhead literally was slamming their body against our back door to break into our home back in the day. How long did it take the police to get to our house? WELL OVER AN HOUR. Forgive me if I do not share your optimism. I went from one environment where Black people are killing each other to another environment where I really DO have to worry about the KKK and skinheads as well as other Black folks. Seriously.

I challenge you to go to Mariposa, Groveland, and Coulterville for ONE DAY. Go to those places and then tell me if you feel the same.

Not to take away from any nasties you got in Fresno County, but Fresno has far more Blacks than my neck of the woods. For God's sakes I've come across people out here who never even met a Black person before. That is changing little by little but like I said we are only 3% of the population here...perhaps less if you count the illegal immigrant workers.

Unfortunately, we have been bitten with the rugged individualism bug that makes us act just as selfish and insular as any other group of folks.

I personally think as well that gun ownership has the potential to cause more problems than it solves.

There are however occassions when a gun can come in handy.

I am concerned however when the government has all the guns.

    CF,
If you would actually read other people's comments, instead of creating cartoonish strawmen, then you might note that I never denied anyone the right to defend their home or their family. There are times when self defense will involve firearms.

When I asked you earlier what should be done about "street piracy", you could have simply said, "Arm the neighborhood". Instead, you engaged in the usual mixed case rant complete with irrelevant bullet points.

It seems to me that the problem is not that there are too few firearms, but too many in the wrong hands. Arming everybody may even up the body count but it is not going to solve the problem. That's what you are after, solutions, right?

In answer to your question, I would shoot the intruder if I had a gun handy, although in close quarters I would prefer a baseball bat. In your cartoon world, people like me are not veterans, do not own guns and have never lived in parts of the world where armed militias ruled the streets.

I doubt you will read this carefully enough to get the salient points. However, even a cynic like myself can still retain enough optimism that there may be a first time for everything.

Maria not that I will be able to convince you of anything. But for the record I have been the editor and managing editor of two weekly newspapers.

These were smaller papers so I had to write at least an article a week. I wrote human interest but mainly investigative stories and broke some really good ones.

I also wrote editorials and commentary. In fact I have written commentary for several websites. AB has read my work (yeah I know) on Black Agenda Report.

In fact two of the folks who contribute on this blog know me personally from my days as an editor and journalist.

I think I see what you are getting at however. But Maria journalists have opinions and we have the right to express them.

Unlike many dishonest journalists I don't pretend to be OBJECTIVE!
I learned over the years that everyone comes to a story with a perspective. I fought with many writers/journalists who didn't believe that discriminatory things happened to certain peoples so they would refuse to print pertinent information that would shed more light on the truth in a story.

I could give you lots of examples.

When I wrote hard news stories I presented all the facts unlike the Big Business dailies that thought some peoples views of an incident weren't worth recording.

So Maria I don't know why you would imply that I would lie about something that I have been doing on and off for over 20 years, but the truth is I am what I say am.

There is a simple but accurate saying that "When seconds count, the police are only minutes away!".

I think everyone has the right and duty to defend themselves by whatever means necessary. For some people that choice is a firearm.

Being able to defend yourself via a weapon is akin to home insurance. You will probably never need to use it but it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Actually MR, I grew up in one of the most violent cities on the East coast, New Haven, CT. Home of Yale, the 1970 Black Panther Trials and one of the worse poverty and crime rates in New England. Seeing as many of my friends and relatives were drug dealers, I know quite a bit about gunshots and dead bodies. My brother's childhood friend just was release from jail on an armed robbery charge. I lost by best friend to street violence.

I still believe that a gun in a private home, 70-80%, will cause more problems than they solve in an modern urban environment. You know what happens when people have guns in their homes? A lot more people get shot -- a crime doesn't decrease. With a gun in the house, you're statistically more likely to shoot your spouse or child than you ever would be thief or a stalker.

Yes, calling the police, community to watch and using the systems in place do deter crime more than arming everyone with a .45 would ever do. Drug dealers have weapons and use them regularly. They're not scared of a home owner with a piece. They're afraid of witnesses, community policing programs, comprehensive anti-drug campaigns, gentrification and neighborhood watches.

Thinking guns will scare of 'street pirates', as CF calls them, is like thinking RAID will get rid of roaches. It works at best temporarily. You only get rid of vermin permanently by cleaning up and giving them no place to feed.

And by the way, I was only local task force started by my Congresswoman to address community policing in High School. So, I've was involved gang mediation before I could drive.

Granny that was interesting it was very telling he should have called Beck out otherwise why be on the show.

Has anyone seen this video. This kid takes a brutal beating and police later said they dropped the charges of assault against him (lol)

  99. "Yes, calling the police, community to watch and using the systems in place do deter crime more than arming everyone with a .45 would ever do."LAC

Ah so you are an optimist. I still don't believe in the police just because I haven't seen them do much but act as state sanctioned terrorists from where I stand.

It is interesting that your experience would have you believe the opposite of what I believe. Maybe it is because the gun violence with which you are familiar happened in a minority community.

I wonder if you'd still feel that way if you lived in the foothills?

I think you might be more of someone who appeals to authority to solve their problems and this is the crux of our disagreement. You believe that the police deter crime and that police should be called rather than citizens arming themselves.

I think citizens need to be armed and given my experiences, would be more loth to call on the police for anything.

  100. ISEEISEE, you are being shortsighted because you say that you would not want to live in areas like where I live. That is a practical sentiment but still doesn't address the fact that segregation still doesn't get rid of racial tensions.

Also I have a right to live here and so do the other Black people. They have been historically disenfranchised and my Father was one guy who stood up and challenged the status quo out here. It isn't as simple as saying "They stay here and we stay there..."

Oprah gravy is the nastiest gravy of them all.

  103. rigmaiden,

Seeems you are in the John Lott camp of those who believe in the power of deterrence given by keeping a loaded gun handy.

It can work. And it can backfire.

Circumstances matter. Do you believe in keeping a handgun in your pocket while at home? Do you live in a state of constant vigilance?

It's okay with me if people shoot intruders. But history shows a lot of others get shot too. And when that happens, the occasional death becomes a major tragedy in the life of the home-owner.

  105. IseeIsee I know that you must have reasonable intentions when addressing me. But you needn't impute meaning into my statements. NO I don't think I am better than anyone. My ancestors on all sides of my family tree helped to build this country. I have a RIGHT to live here just as everyone else.

You believe I came at you as an enemy. Nothing could be further from the truth. Your own thought distortions prevent you from seeing a differing perspective, which is sad.

You continue to live your life as you see fit and I'll continue to do the same.
