Ms. Ariemma's class.

Hold up folks, I just put on my Air Rs (those are my racism track shoes) and I am running something down real quick. Let me check out this story:

"When Georgia high school Advanced History teacher Catherine Ariemma asked her students to dress up in costumes for a project re-enacting different historical periods, four of her pupils dressed up like the Ku Klux Klan.African-American students at Lumpkin County High School became upset and angry, especially after some of the teens dressed in KKK robes asked one Black student if he would help them re-enact a lynching for their project. Ariemma has been suspended with pay and could possibly be fired. She defended her decision to hold the re-enactment. "We have to discuss racism in our society because if we don't, we are condoning it and I don't cover it up and you can't discuss racism and not include the Klan," she told CNN.

[Check out the CNN story]

Hmmm, I have to be careful with this one. The thing about my man racism is that sometimes he can send decoys for your ass. I mean sometimes you know it's racism, like the latest crap in Jena, or this kind of ignorance. But sometimes.......I don't know.

See folks, it's like this: I have no problem with Ms. Ariemma using visual aids to teach history. The klan is a part of our history and we can't just close our eyes and pretend that they didn't exist. They did and they still do. So I am not mad at Ms. Ariemma for trying to teach her children about the klan.

Still, when I heard that there were no African Americans in her class, and that she just let the kids go out into the school population with their robes on, I have to admit that I started to have second thoughts about Ms. Ariemma. (And, as if to make matters worse, she lives in Georgia.)

So I don't know.....OK, I thought about it: I don't think Ms. Ariemma should be terminated, and I don't think that she is a racist. I think that she is a clueless Southern women from the majority population who was trying to do the right thing. I think that the powers that be should get with Ms. Ariemma and let her know in no uncertain terms that she handled this in the wrong way, and because of her carelessness something really ugly could have happened. (Yeah, I am sitting in the cafeteria and some kid comes in with a klan outfit; please believe that we are going to get all Marvin Gaye with each other.)

So no harm here, we are moving right along. I guess I can take off my Air Rs now.

Ms. Ariemma was a decoy.

    I love you man!!

We are going to see if you are an "above board type of fellow" upon hearing the SECOND INCIDENT over KLAN UNIFORMS in a Georgia High School.

This time a BLACK TEACHER was busted for doing the very same thing.

I need to scoot my kids upstairs so I can have control over the DVR and upload the latest news clips.

In addition to 2 more Black folks murdered in Metro ATL - there is a the story of the Black teacher who did a Klan History sketch for her class.

We'll see if this will be our post of the day tomorrow.

From what I have read from other sources that every student in the school knew it was a school project. My question is where are the 75 black students in terms of the class structure? Are they all just cliqued together? Do they just stick together and roll their eyes at everyone else who is not black? Are they segregated in class by race? Do they participate in school projects? If there were school posters about her project, it would have behooved one or two of our kids to run up to the teacher and say we would like to participate/monitor this project. I don't mean to act the part of the lynched, but maybe as narrator.

I teach AP US History-- the good folks at ETS are flying me (& 1300 other teachers) to Kentucky to grade over a million essays in a week. Heres the deal, these are usually the most sophisticated kids and veteran teachers. AP students and teachers should be intellegent enough to know that you treat race carefully. Frank discussions are one thing, but be careful of offensive language (come on people lets be polite) but re-enactments! No F#cking Way!

Okay the kids were making a movie- take the damn costumes off before leaving the class. Any fool knows you don't ask the first black kid you see if he wants to reinact a lynching. The 4 clowns who left the room should be suspended and the teacher needs to keep control of her classroom. I question her judgement.

I teach at a private Jewish school-- it is way too lily white, one of my jobs is to ride sheperd on the stupid things kids say (and do). I stop them all the time and tell them you can't say certain things.

Finally, no one is going get all dressed up in Nazi drag at my school to teach about the Holacaust.

Even a child knows that when you play with fire you get burned. When teaching a sensitive subject any intellegent teacher will know to be cautious.

The teacher is either a fool or plays the role well.

If an AP History teacher does not understand that the KKK is not just another cartoon character, then she should not be in her position. I agree with Anonymous 10:05; if we wouldn't have Nazi soldiers re-enacting the Holocaust, then this Klan play is utterly unacceptable. Why not include the US Calvary committing genocide on all the Native folks on whose land we reside?

    Field,
A couple of thoughts, some have probably already been addressed. Teaching history can be difficult when you have to confront kids with a difficult truth about their family history. It is easy to tell the kids from Lumpkin County (a name you just can't make up) about those terrible Nazis, it is another thing entirely to tell them about their Uncle Cletus.

That said, an exercise like this turns the whole thing into a game of dress up, like Halloween. It cheapens the lesson. As Chriss mentioned, they were probably borrowing their dad's robes.

What might make this more interesting would be to have the black students dress as Klansmen and the white students play the role of lynching victims.

  26. How did the teacher err? They do slave ship reenactments at public schools via teaching tolerance. The KKK was one of the first established terrorist organizations in our country with legal sanction from many locales. To ignore it because it messes with our fragile sensibilities is foolish.

If you don't know history you will repeat it. Reenactments are a surefire way to teach history that engages the students.

If this was any other topic in history, that we were divorced from I don't think it'd be news.

Sometimes Black people get sensitive about the WRONG things. The Black student union tried to ban Huckleberry fin at my high school. Me, my sister and a gal named Calvanita were the only ones who publicly decried the notion of banning books.

They wanted to ban the book due to its charitable use of the word 'nigger'. However, I told them that if that was the criteria then many books written by Blacks would also need to be banned eg 'Nigger' by Dick Gregory.

I hate this bullshit about censoring because the images hurt our feelings. So the hell what. If it was a Black teacher, would people still be raising hell or call it 'creative'?

Yeah, like you Field, I'm going to have to chalk it up to the teacher making a mistake. She had good intentions and like Anon 10:05 said, it's hard to teach history to students sometimes because to some kids it's something that happened eons ago and doesn't concern them. According to Kohlberg and Piaget(not to mention most teachers), adolescents are pretty egocentric at that age.

  30. I don't mind the kids learning history myself and the KKK was a part of our history. However, what I don't like is how they tend to sugar-coat history and watered it down and gave hero status to some of those that did not deserve it. Nor do I think that history should be whitewashed to make it seem like no other race on this earth accomplished or contributed anything and the teaching of white supremacy.

In addition, I don't like how they make the Antebellum period seem like it was a period of mint julips, lovely balls, and glamorous plantations. It was anything but that! In fact, it was period of human degradation, cold-blooded murder, rape, abuse, and denigration of their fellow human beings. When they do talk about slavery, it is a one liner and the rest has to do with the civil war. They don't even include the fact that many nonwhites fought in that civil war as well and had they not fought in it, the union would have lost the war.

  33. Amen szpork, don't forget yellow fever too, medical experiments on slaves, and the sun is extremely hot in the south in those cotton and sugar cane fields--sunstrokes, etc.

I have a pamplet that has been in my family for years of interviews with members of my family who were former slaves that has been passed down throughout our generation. We had what some would call griots in our family who told us our family history and what slavery was really like. We have acres of land in two states. On our acres of land in one state sets an old buckboard, the path of the "Trail of Tears" runs through some of our land. There are graves for some of the Indians that died along the way and graves for Union Soldiers that are kept up sort of like a historical landmark. That's a part of history in the USA.

On the land in Louisiana sets an old water well, and some oil pumps. I even have a picture of my white uncle's plantation and the cramped, raggedy shacks that his black kinfolks were forced to sleep in. The only thing I don't have picture of is the inhumane horse troughs that blacks were forced to eat out of with no utensils.

Nothing positive comes out of these reenactmet because very seldom will the minority have a sense of not being sooo weak. 70 years (est. more than ) and those sheets still evoke a sense of fear. Just read what this hot mess of a black teacher did:

    By Larry Hartstein

    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Lumpkin County wasn't the only place where students dressed up in Ku Klux Klan outfits last week. It happened in Gwinnett County, too.

A spokeswoman for Gwinnett County schools told the AJC that Stephanie Hunte, an 8th-grade social studies teacher at Sweetwater Middle School in Lawrenceville, allowed her students to wear KKK robes as part of a re-enactment last Thursday. Another teacher saw the students preparing for the re-enactment and told an administrator.

"The administrator told [Hunte] that this type of activity was not appropriate and would not take place," spokeswoman Sloan Roach wrote in an e-mail.

However, school officials learned this week that Hunte had allowed "this same activity" in another class the day before, according to Roach.

"As a result of this information, we have launched a Human Resources investigation into the matter," Roach told the AJC. "Ms. Hunte, who has been with GCPS since August 2006, was told to report to the Central Office this morning."

Today is the last day of school. No disciplinary action has been taken.

Roach wrote that the re-enactment occurred as part of a social studies curriculum that covers "parts of our nation's history, including Reconstruction, key political and social changes and the civil rights movement."

The Gwinnett and Lumpkin cases are notable for their similarities, but also for one key difference: Hunte is black; the teacher in the Lumpkin County incident, Catherine Ariemma, is white.

(The demographic makeup of Lawrenceville is majority white, then a high concentration of Asians, and Blacks and Hispanics number almost the same.)

I'm glad you framed that last statement as a question, but, I feel, you really believe it should be a declarative statement.

Why are you suggesting that blacks and Native Americans are complicit in their own holocaust?

Many whites don't find the Jewish holocaust appalling, and neither do they find the black or Native American holocaust appalling.

They are the superior race on the planet, and all others are here to serve them, and to do their bidding.

A few holocausts from time to time helps reinforce that division.

Just for the record, Jews are seen as an inferior white race. Hitler had notions of a master race, and that excluded Jews.

"Himmler considered no method too extreme in the pursuit of his lunatic goal: the propagation of the Germanic master race. The SS also kidnapped Aryan-looking children from Poland and other occupied lands and brought them to the Lebensborn centers across the Third Reich, where they were "Germanized" and turned over to Nazi foster parents"

Day after day, I'm become more convinced that we should add to the curriculum a commonsense class on a ratio of one to two, for every class that's taught in public school, colleges, and universities.

If there's one thing that seems missing, almost universally, is this one sense (not booksense), but commonsense, which, I'm afraid, isn't too common.

I blame it on living in the ATL for too long. This has to be one of the most insidious places... blacks have a deep desire to be affiliated with whites...be like whites...will do anything to have material posessions...and upon gaining them really believe they are superior to other blacks...(like whites)... and...the only place I have ever been where I have to educate white people on a daily...letting them know that white skin privelage does not exsist. MHO.

This is a general statement and does not apply to ALL blacks nor ALL whites.

"If it was a Black teacher, would people still be raising hell or call it 'creative'?"

Yes...the outcry is the same. Please read the story I posted from the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The reason that that southern white high schoolers should not be reenacting racism is because the majority of these white kids are taught racism at home...they do not need to have it reinforced in the public school system...and especially a public school system in Georgia. This is a place where white men slap people's babies for crying (and he didn't know the mother or child) and a place where a white man beat a black woman down for saying to him..."Watch your door...you almost hit my baby."

    And...

Georgia has put it to the legislature to propose the same hateful law that passed in Arizona...the exact same law...word for word..just replace Arizona with Georgia.

No MR - this is not the place to let anything ride...and it's not a good time to let anything ride in this country...too much white backlash happening. Racism has to be called out all the time...and it has to be uncovered...for the sake of those kids...and ALL children.

No she wasn't. She does that same reencatment every year. This is a case of a mostly white county (and according to the few blacks in the county...a mostly racist county) allowing a teacher get away with introducing racism as an accpetable way of life in Lumpkin County.

Now if you don't believe that...why is the black teacher being investigated by human resources and the white teacher is merely suspended...to allow the country to cool down behind this racist teaching...

    In a word...Jo-Ja (Georgia)

And...you will not see any people (black or white) in highly emlightened Atlanta going into Lumpkin County to do anything about it...they're too busy being pretentious...and asking me if I will write a grant for them... (not in their wildest imaginations!)

  61. As a resident of Georgia, I heard about both stories. FN probably should've waited to post this story, becuase I'm sure the real racism will show it's ugly head when they fire the black teacher and the white teacher is only suspended for a couple days at the end of the year.

I didn't find a problem with either situation. Kids are seeing blatant racism everyday in the media with Rand Pauls, Tea Partier, and Jena Six stories. Why not meet that demon face to face and talk about the ugliness of racism. The images of the Klan is not easy viewing, but necessary in educating on the extreme ideals of people in this country. Both teachers used bad judgement, they should've notified the principal before allowing the re-enactments to begin.

  64. FN,

The problem I have with a reenactment like this, is that it is setting up something similar to The Standford Prison Experiment that has been banned from being repeated. This is the same situation as separating the students as the inmates and prison guards. It started to go wrong, when they ask a Black student to pretend to be lynched.

  70. A few years ago here in Brooklyn a white teacher working in an almost all-black public school read a book in class -- a book titled Nappy Hair -- written and illustrated by a black woman.

Didn't take long for the firestorm to begin. Black parents went berserk. The teacher was subjected to death threats, in some cases the threats were made in public forums that were convened to hear the complaints.

The teacher left the school and was moved to a new unnamed school through the Teacher Protection Program that handles these things.

New York City's Department of Education went through a huge change in 1968 when black parents forced out white teachers working in the Ocean Hill Brownsville section of Brooklyn. They demanded to have black teachers teaching their black children.

The Dept of Ed capitulated. And for the following 30 years black academic achievement went into the toilet.

It is this relentless obsession of blacks to focus on the wrong issues that almost guarantees failure. As always, the obsession keeps black kids from learning much that matters. Like science and math.

  80. Hathor... I was thinking PRECISELY the same thing. Anytime you have someone (especially a young person) dress in costume and "act" the part of an oppressor, you take a chance that they will begin to ADAPT that role and infringe upon the rights of others. I cannot understand how someone can be so naive/ignorant to not realize that, which is WHY I cannot overlook the teacher's actions. And, how could she make a film about racism WITHOUT the involvement of Black students?

    Thrasher:

You are the first official recipient of my "Kneegrow Please!!!" award for today.

Here is what you fail to note.

In the entire scheme of THREATS suffered by Black people in 2010 - this incident in Lumkin County GA DOES NOT make the Geiger counter move one bit.

In my blog post I made note of the fact that Rev Markel Hutchens of Atlanta was motivated to depart Atlanta to meet with the (Klansmen) of Lumpkin County GA.

In the process he was able to depart from the serial fist fight that he is engaged in with a rival factor of the SCLC.

Just think Tursi - about 4 days ago Hutchens was seen having procured a WELDER to put a deadbolt lock on the back door of the SCLC HQ in the ATL and a padlock on the parking lot fence.

THANKS to the POWER OF THE KLAN IMAGERY he has an "out" from the self inflicted death spiral that his organization is in.

What better way to make yourself "RE-IMPORTANT" than to (as he said on tv) "Over-React" to a situation of racial insensitivity.

    Thraser:

Do you see how important RACISM CHASING is to those who have their "national headquarters" paid for by the time when such a practice was legitimate?

Having consumed all of the "low hanging fruit" - they are now fighting over who gets the CORNER OFFICE with a clear view of the "MLK National Site".

Ironically on the day that Rev Hutchens traveled that distance - no less than 3 Black people were murdered in metro Atlanta - their civil rights having been gravely violated.

I don't work from the premise of beginning with wrong and expecting the consequences to be right. I think that BOTH teachers were in a unique position to enlighten their classroom and they failed miserably. And MHO is that reenactments serve no real basis for learning history for kids K-12.

"I am a teacher in Florida.

I am told that every student in my realm must score on or above grade level on the FCAT each year. Never mind their learning discrepancies, their unstable home lives, their prior learning experiences. In the spring, they are all assessed with one measure and if they don’t fit, I have failed. Students walk through my doors reading at a second grade level and by year’s end can independently read and comprehend early 4th grade texts, but this is no matter. One of my students has already missed 30 school days this year, but that is overlooked. If they don’t perform well on this ONE test in early March, their learning gains are irrelevant. They didn’t learn enough. They didn’t grow enough. I failed them. In the three months that remain in the school year after this test, I am expected to begin teaching 5th grade curriculum to my 4th grade students so that they are prepared for next year’s test.

I am a teacher in Florida.

I am expected to create a culture of students who will go on to become the leaders of our world. When they exit my classroom, they should be fully equipped to compete academically on a global scale. They must be exposed to different worldviews and diverse perspectives, and yet, most of my students have never left Sanford, Florida. Field trips are now frivolous. I must provide new learning opportunities for them without leaving the four walls of our classroom. So I plan. I generate new ways to expose them to life beyond their neighborhoods through online exploration and digital field trips. I stay up past The Tonight Show to put together a unit that will allow them to experience St. Augustine without getting on a bus. I spend weekends taking pictures and creating a virtual world for them to experience, since the State has determined it is no longer worthwhile for them to explore reality. Yes. My students must be prepared to work within diverse communities, and yet they are not afforded the right to ever experience life beyond their own town."

  97.
CF... the educational system was broken before NCLB. NCLB was implemented ostensibly to "fix" it. IT FAILED MISERABLY. If something is broken, you attempt to FIX IT
Excuse me Joanna -

NCLB was NOT crafted to "FIX" our educational problems through out the nation.

It was designed to MEASURE where there are problem areas and DIRECT federal resources toward that problem.

(From estimates from the top of my head) - the Federal government spends about $60 BILLION per year on Public Education. The array of State and Local entities spend about $450 BILLION.

I beg you to tell me how the Federal Government is going to FIX something that it does not operate?

Its strange to see those who STRUGGLED for control over the LOCAL school operations in order to produce better educational outcomes and now possess that control are looking toward the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT for a FIX.

As a person who is from Philly where Filled Negro lives I can attest to this 50 years STRUGGLE!! Where are the people who were "along for the ride", having reached the destination yet the key grievances REMAIN?

    Uptown "Uncle" Steve,

Alicia is not my alter ego, vice versa.

Although it does appear (most of the time) as if you, Maria and Thrasher could all possibly be the same individual commenting under different Avatars and Monikers.

As it relates to writing styles...

Many of you commenting "Anonymously" on Field's Blog aren't fooling anyone.

    Why?

Your writing style remains the same as when you comment using your regular Avatar/ Monikers.

i.e., Mellaneous who admitted she was anon 6:15 on Field's Tuesday post.

Whenever another woman consistently and viciously attacks another woman (i.e., Maria & Mellaneous appearing to attack me) its usually due to Envy plain & simple.

(Of course women who behave as such usually deny it.)

Its one thing to call me out on something if YOU think I'm wrong, but its another to consistently play little high school/ Sorority type "girlie" games.

Everyone who visits and comments on Field's Blog (the key word is Field's) is merely expressing HIS or HER own personal opinion as a response to one of his posts.

Sometimes Field's threads are extended due to to regular conversation or long winded debates.

Just because someone includes a link or two once in a while, doesn't mean THEIR personal opinion is correct.

By the way have any of you had your opinions or comments published in a Medical or Legal Journal?

If so please provide me with the links or name of the Periodicals.

Let me remind you that since I'm a FREE, Legal adult, I have the right per the U.S. Constitution (1st Amendment) to express MY opinion just as most of you are doing on Field's Blog.

If you aren't MATURE enough to disagree with me agreeably, than kick rocks!

If you don't like MY writing style or don't agree with MY Opinions, than why do you continue to read MY comments?

To women like Maria & Mellaneous, I have no hate for either of you.

Just so you know "girls" like you have never hindered me from being myself.

I love myself and have NEVER believed I was Inferior to Anyone else.

I have also NEVER sat at home crying over childish antics due to another woman's personal issues with ME.

If I'm that important to you, than hey I'm flattered and by all means carry on!

If Field doesn't want me commenting on HIS Blog, ONLY he can stop me.

Until then I will carry on....as will YOU unless Field blocks us.

Have a Blessed and Productive day everyone:)

    Thrasher -

My answer was IMPLICIT in my previous response.

The art of RACISM CHASING as practiced by certain operatives is done for DIVERSIONARY purposes. NOT for the fortification of Black Permanent Interests.

For me, Thrasher - I have a personal "Top 5 List Of Threats To Black People In 2010". I use this internal list to measure the "Filled Negro Self Chum Feeding Of The Day" posting.

Last week I posted about a LEGITIMATE "KKK" threat from Henry County GA. A Black owner of a teen hang out club was ran out of business. Some punks in the community spray painted the business and then left a gasoline can outside the business in the bushes. This woman shut down the business because she did not want to put herself in danger.

Now again, Thrasher, while the above is legit, me being a healthy consumer of the news, am prompted to compare this ONE INCIDENT with the near daily "Street Pirate Driving A Stolen Car Through The Front Door Of A Business In The Black Community To Steal Flat Screen Televisions". (and recently liquor)

You see Thrasher these attacks upon businesses in the Black community have the very same effect - Driving them one step closer to insolvency. Their insurance rates go up. They have to replace inventory. Certain customers think the place is dangerous and stop going there.

I am beginning to see that despite me taking the time to JUSTIFY my reasoning - you are not interested, dismissing it as "long windedness".

If only you could see the "Brevity Bigotry" in some other people who are more brief in their views that are compatible to yours.

As a resident of Michigan I'd figure that you had your fair share of diversionary expeditions and now you are ready to MANAGE people according to your common "Permanent Interests" and their attainment of them?

  113. Alicia,

Every legally registered voter in America (white, black, hispanic, asian, senior citizen) has the right to cast their ballots for the political candidates of his or her choice.

Thus millions of voters chose Obama back in Nov. of 2008.

Pres. Obama is a truly skilled Politician because he learned from the best: Jesse Jackson Sr., Farrakhan, Wright, Daley, etc.,

He beat the White man at his own game and became the first African-American elected U.S. president.

Did Obama fool or trick people into voting for him?

Yes and No, it depends on reasons why each citizen voted for him.

Being elected U.S. President was simply another goal to be accomplished on Obama's list of personal Aspirations.

He fooled the White man, achieved his goal of becoming u.s. president and made history, thus killing three birds with one stone.

This is why nothing he has or hasn't done since his inauguration doesn't surprise me.

Barack Obama is NOT God and he NEVER will be!

People should stop putting all of their trust in him.

    This includes Black Voters.

If Obama has failed Black Voters its their own fault!

The Black Community keeps selling the Black Vote for pennies, while expecting Politicians to take us seriously.

    Please!

If Black Politicians & Black Voters wish to continue endorsing Politicians (Black & White) without first making those Politicians earn their votes, than they deserve to be treated like Slaves.

As I stated yesterday so much for putting his mighty "O" ness on a pedestal.

    Only God belongs up there.

I don't hate Pres. Obama and I don't want him to fail but...

I'm not depending on him to deliver or "Save" the Black race from a long history of Inequality because that isn't going to happen.

Black Voters just need to wake up and stop being stupid!

"Group Think" has NEVER led to success because someone has to be the LEADER.

The details of the case are murky, and the jury doubted the witnesses but had some faith in the doctors who testified.

Meanwhile, the death occurred in 2004 -- six years ago. In other words, even if the six whites should have been convicted of something, the fact that you are relying a a six-year-old case that gathered little publicity outside Maryland is evidence that whites rarely attack blacks.

Of course there was yesterday's conviction of a white kid who killed a hispanic worker on Long Island.

But here in New York City there is at least one killing per day committed by a black perpetrator killing, usually, a black victim.

    * The PAST is their best friend as they rattle the chains of slavery

    * They have no MANAGEMENT PLAN for the FUTURE.

    * The Future of Black America is tied to the Democratic Party

    * They pronounce their POWER today based upon their POPULARITY in "Running Things" in our community - asking rhetorically "If you make so much sense - why don't you have any power within the Black community?

  131. Well field, I'm riding the fence. I mean, I agree, the woman gets a pass on this one.

I do not believe it was a racist act. There is however, a slight bit of ignorance.

Now don't get me wrong, blame is a mean game, and on this one, I don't know where to point my finger.

Personally, I believe the events, slavery, lynchings, the middle passage, brutalities of bondage, etc, are too often white washed, too often covered in white soap.

Some of the other comments asked the questions:

Would it be right to re-enact the black Panther movement, Hitler's Germany, the slaughter of the Indian, etc.

Well, if we've noticed, America does not want it's citizens to see the real horrors of war. All the above mentioned periods of our history were about some sort of war/power.

So, personally, I believe re-enactments are an excellent way to tell the whole truth. Now of course, if we are going to do the damn thang, get down and get dirty. I mean, show it all. Show all of the sexually perverted white men that had sex with 10 black slaves in one day. Show the remains of a black body torn about by the middle passage. Show how America used the German's hidious experiments on jews. Re-enact the hiding places of the Nazis, that america knew about.

Show the whole story. Tell everyone why America really got involved in the war. They didn't give a damn about jews.

Yes, re-enact the cutting of a pig and watch the negro eat it's guts for dinner. Re-enact the look on the wife of the slave owner as her husband fell in love with his black bounty. Show all that sh*t.

Take the cameras to the bottom of a slave ship. Get a close-up of the feces that dripped off the slave that was dripped off the dead slave above him. Turn the slave over to get a close view of his bones. Not his skin, it was ripped off by the movement of the dark and dank slave ship.

Re-enact the slaughter of Fred Hampton. Go in the back room of Bush and his boys as they divided their profits from the Iraq war.

Show all that shit! Then we can talk from facts. Emotions move us to actions. America doesn't want us to see the truth.

Bring on the re-enactments! Then we'll talk about what's left.

Please spare me with "oh, it's sooooo insensitive"

Wow Field I am working too hard these days cause I have been missing the fun, but I am getting educated.

I kept asking what was the teacher thinking about? I mean in the context of that town and in the South I think she should have made it clear that some things simply aren't up for reenactment.

And letting the kids parade around outside of the classroom makes me wonder if she was that naive or stupid or just oblivious. I have learned that some folks when it comes to race are just that oblivious.

Agape- Amen Sister (would you write a grant for me,lol)I think your assessment of Georgia and esp Atl are dead on.

AB- thanks for the references they were helpful today. I am glad you explained some of the problems with No Child Left Behind.

You should add the fact that it was Jeb Bush that had an economic interest in some of the tests. So I think some of the testing required was a result of the profit making that resulted from forcing children to have their lives determined by their test taking ability.

Field the No Child Left Behind fiasco would make for a great post. Its not just some political football. I think Joanna was right the previous educational policy wasn't working either, but this served the purpose of actually limiting educational exposure to arts and sciences.

I am merely responding to what you have written. Some of what you write I find inaccurate or I disagree with and I take it on because I think its important to point it out when it could mislead others.

Some issues are totally subjective and noone is right or wrong. Folks just have different opinions.

I don't understand why you voice your opinion and seem hurt when folks disagree with you? If you notice most folks who respond on this blog are pretty sharp and even if you disagree with them they usually can back up what they say with some kind of authoritative source.

From my perspective we are simply debating nothing more and nothing less. And since among my many other handles I am a Christian minister I will make a point to be less pointed in my disagreements with you.

So its not personal we just disagree more often than not. If you notice when I agree with folks or like something they wrote I acknowledge it. I have even done that with you.

    Question for you:

Is there a point at which we accept that the 'Equal Human Beings' who are the adult parents of these children, having failed to do their part as the primary managers of these children that they have DONE EVERYTHING NECESSARY to insure that their kids are replicas of themselves, thus allow their dysfunction to jump across the 'synapse between generations'?

Long story short - while you are indeed doing your part as part of your JOB - is there a point where you can't push any further beyond what the adults within the environment are willing to do?

They have "one vote" in the community - as you do.

They have "one vote" in the race - as you do.

They have "one vote" in America - as you do.

They are as bound to the notion of the "Social Justice Contract" - as you do.

Not asking you to "give up".
Instead the people who have the most influence upon the ADULTS need to stop EXPLOITING their grievances and instead turn inward to insure that they are doing their part in order to redirect the course upon which their children will travel.

The Yoda-Like Character descends from the mountain to render his judgments upon us, once again.

    1) Mellaneous - IF YOU CAN SHOW one line in the "No Child Left Behind" legislation that BANISHED access to arts, sciences, music or recess - I would love to see it.

Just as Educational Activist Jonathan Kozol LIED as he say that because of NCLB - Chicago Public Schools banished RECESS - I pulled up an article which was dated 2 FREAKING YEARS prior to NCLB even coming about in which CPS restricted recess.

NCLB is a catch-all for attacks by certain operatives.

In the entire scheme of things the LOCAL SCHOOLS still operate the schools. Funny how people don't talk about the REFUSAL TO LENGTHEN THE SCHOOL DAY by the teachers union as being a factor in the denial of recess.

Yet as, was pointed out last week in the "Journal Editorial Report" the "Harlem Success Academy" which sits right across the street from a public school had 71% of their students PROFICIENT to grade level while the school that drew from the SAME DAMNED POOL OF STUDENTS only had 17% of their students proficient.

"NCLB is the blame for this - my BACKSIDE!!!".

The activist bigots are the one's suppressing various charter schools that are EMBARRASSING THEM.

They care less about the successful education of these kids than they do JOB PROTECTION for the adults.

Look at Michele Rhee in Washington DC and tell me that NCLB is the biggest threat that she faces.

  145. I think the costumes were provoking and went over board, but I don't know if her intentions or acceptance of the costumes were of racist or malice intent. I'll give her the benefit for now. Where I live, teachers are required to not only meet their educational requirements, but also child psychology/social courses that should at least aide them in handling, or detouring from making poor decisions such as this with adolescence. Therefore, a "lesson" to others would be in order. I think suspension is fitting, oppose to termination, this time.

Then again.... I think Laurel also had a point.

Now I want to know before I truly give her a non-racist "ignorant" pass... what if there was a black child in the class who dressed up as a black panther instead of those white students dressing up as the klan? I would like to know what kind of reaction this teacher would have had toward that black child. Would she have accepted that, or felt right away it was provoking? That would be telling of how insensitive/racially "ignorant" she is, or when she wants to be.

    CF said:

"1) Mellaneous - IF YOU CAN SHOW one line in the "No Child Left Behind" legislation that BANISHED access to arts, sciences, music or recess - I would love to see it."

Don't be ridiculous, the loss of arts and sciences were the practical outcomes of focusing on the test and teaching to the test.

And of course it is partly due to budget cuts as well.

But you are right NCLB is not the reason the schools aren't getting the job done. The bottom line for why our children aren't getting educated is that there is no national will to get it done.

If the government takes the same will it has for fighting interventionist wars and even half the budget it uses we could get our kids educated.

And I have heard all the claptrap about the parents, but I worked with the dumbest rednecks in the history of the world who bragged about not having any books in the house and not ever entering the school house door, but the children of these ignoramouses received excellent educations. And that was because every effort was made to educate all the children in their school district. They even made accomadation for the problem kids and found ways to educate them.

    Its about will!!

Alicia that is because you have a real heart and can see each child's potential.

Parents (or legal guardians) must included in the framework of helping to guide a student to success because Teachers have no control over a student's home environment.

Good thing I cut and pasted my previous response from about 3 weeks ago so I don't have to waste my time retyping.

WhiteBowieSteve is the top sales person for Merk. He has pushed the "blue pill" upon his customer base for several decades. He SOLD his wares to the people with the promise "Take this pill and you will be cured from what ails you. Do NOT take the RED pill because the toxins within will cause liver failure and will kill you.....just as its makers - GSK want to see you - DEAD".

From this Steve was awarded top sales person of the year for Merk. He was allowed a speaking spot at their convention.

In his speech the "inside secret" he gave on how to keep the masses addicted. Steve told the crowd "F.U.D.!!! Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. These are OUR most powerful allies in US retaining our market share".

Then a person in the crowd raised their hand and asked. "US? When you say US who are you talking about? 'US Black people?"

"No, no, no brother. Do I need to spell it out everything to you?", Steve said. "US DEMOCRATS!!!".

"We can't afford to have dissension in our ranks. Look at what we had to do to brother Tavis, and he is a fellow leftist. We need UNITY within the Black community. With us delivering Black people as consumers of this 'Blue Pill' and then using FUD to keep them from choosing the RED pill..........they will be so busy fighting against their adopted ENEMY that few of them will think to create an ORGANIC REMEDY to cure them".

"You see - I got the top salesman job because I saw that the real threat is the ORGANIC MOVEMENT. This would have Black people:

    * Exercising so they would become strong and less subject to the ailment that my pill is sold as a cure for

    * Collaborating - INDEPENDENT upon the "official" channels so that they might figure out a cure that is not "certified" by the American establishment.

"Do you think these Negroes will figure that they spent tens of thousands of years on this Earth PRIOR TO SLAVERY and some how managed themselves? NO!! We must market the 400 years of SLAVERY as the DEATH BLOW that the Negro will never recover from.........without the HELP OF THE PILL we are selling that is".

This is why, above everything else we must DESTROY THE NEGRO that dares get Black people to think outside of the confinements that we have crafted. We must make him believe that the battle within the AMERICAN POLITICAL SYSTEM is the only way that he can obtain RACIAL freedom and advancement."

Steve received a standing ovation from the fellow salesmen at Merk.

Their challenge was to take his words and alter them to fit their own particular constituency:

    * Jews
    * Hispanics
    * Laborers
    * Homosexuals
    * Public School Teachers
    * "The Least Of These"
(What else was on LAC's list from the other day?)

For Steve - the protection afforded to them by THE PILL by telling them that they are WEAK WITHOUT IT is indeed his secret weapon.

It gets HIM awards and bonuses.
It leaves some of them - stuck as "Vulnerable Groups".

You are confusing what some school districts CHOSE TO DO as they implemented NCLB versus what the LEGISLATION made them do.

There is NOTHING about "cutting recess" articulated within NCLB. Not one word.

I bet, however, that if the legislation "BANNED the cutting of recess" as schools tried to add more time for test preparations that the SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS would have protested the ban.

If the administrations attempted to lengthen the school day in order to keep recess - then the teacher's unions would have protested.

Thus we have what we have today:

    http://www.times-herald.com/Local/Educator-promotes-school-recess--997456

In recent years, as the pressure to improve student scores on standardized tests has increased -- possibly even prompting some school administrators and teachers to falsify student test answers -- many elementary schools have eliminated or significantly reduced children's recess breaks during the school day.

Despite mounting evidence that kids need an outlet to blow off steam, learn to interact with others and get the exercise they need, nearly 40 percent of American elementary schools have either eliminated or are considering eliminating recess. Due to school budget cuts and an increased focus on academic standards, millions of American schoolchildren may miss out on unstructured play with their peers including hopscotch, tag, kickball or jump rope. Recess also functions successfully as an established school-based activity and should be carefully considered as part of any school health and wellness policy.

Recess is being cut out so children will have more time to study for the tests, and we know that test-driven instruction doesn't allow time for creative thinking and learning for children," says Joe Frost, a retired professor of education at the University of Texas, Austin, and an expert on childhood play. "On top of that, the few schools that continue to keep recess have really dumbed the playground down."

AB excellent points, good info. Lack of recess means that there will be less interaction and less learning of just important social skills.

CF are you just being disagreeable, or are you simply being contrarian. You are missing the point and you know it. Cut it out! Alicia is trying to school you, listen for a change.

NCLB is not working, that and budget cuts have caused schools to take time away from other activities. The problem is that even though some children appear to be making this form of education work, it is not the best way to educate children, that is if your interest is in making them thinking, creative, intelligent human beings.

And of course under the US system of public education that has never really been the goal. Thinking folks cause problems they actually want the government to do what it is supposed to for all of us.

Its all a money laundering racket using Children as the Pawns.

Public Schools like our nation's Foster Care system has become the best way to obtain Federal funding for each state.

After obtaining Federal Funding its not used for purposes intended or should I say NOT invested in educating Black students. (at least not in North Carolina)

NCLB plays a huge role in that scheme.

This is why I support Charter Schools and Private Schools.

While I agree Laurel that black students are not being educated in our public schools, I don't think private schools or charter schools are the answer. Now no doubt some of the Charter schools are doing an excellent job. And of course the private schools get to pick and choose.

In fact some of the charter schools are sipphoning off much needed public school funds.

If kids can get educated in the suburbs then they can get educated in the city.

What happens when kids can't go to a charter school or a private school which will always include a sizable population so we have still will have to fix the public schools.

Maybe no_slappz is, in fact, Bob Allen.

Remember him? Member of the Florida House of Representatives, Florida Chairman of John McCain’s Presidential Campaign. Until his conviction, that is.

In 2007, he offered an undercover cop $20 to allow Allen to blow him in a men’s room in a public park. After being arrested, Allen tried to explain that he only offered to blow the cop because the cop was a “burly black man” and he “didn’t want to become a statistic.”

That sounds like n_s to me.

    @ no_slappz:

    agape2010,

"There is nothing magical about learning science and math.

Like it or not, memorization is part of learning the basics.

Why do so many blacks fail to learn any science or math? Because so few black parents know anything about science and math."

I agree that there is no "magic" when it comes to learning. There are different styles, behaviors and scientific theories.

Momorization is not learning...it is memorizing.

And here's a good memory trick for learning...if you want to retain the information your learning for years...readi it/work the problem at night...the information goes into your long term memory.

Learning subject matter (math, science or any subject) is not dependent on genetics...or whether one's parents know the subject matter.

My sister (we have the same parents) is a CPA...I could care less about math...my brother (we also have the same parents) is degreed and working in a science related field...something I like...but would not care to do it for a living.

Educating cheldren is at once both an art and a science. the capability for a child to learn is dependent on many variables...the overall health of the child...the overall health of the school...the overall health of the child's enviroment...the overall knowledge of the educator (just to name a few).

    Peace.

My goodness, what is old no_slappz to do? You're not living up to his stereotype of blacks, and their supposed inferiority.

Now he'll have to throw out a few more degrees of his own, a few more accomplishments of his own, so that he can stay one "giant leap" ahead of us inferiors.

    ReplyDelete
  191. Agape I disagree with you somewhat. Parental background is of paramount importance. We DON'T have a lot of Blacks in math and science related fields but a lot of that is because we don't have support in math and science at home. A parent can support the notion of studying these topics but if they don't have an understanding of them, it's difficult to learn them. Especially in supercompetitive environments where teachers have little time to actually 'teach'

Regarding recess reductions from up thread, NCLB never mandated that at all and its assanine to put that on the programme. There are many features to NCLB that were bothersome to classroom teachers and school administrators. But for private tutors like myself, NCLB was a very good thing.

We got to work with children who ordinarily would not be able to afford our services and it was a rewarding and fruitful experience. Many of the parents in the programme appreciated the help, especially when the child wanted the help.

Background is everything. This is why there are families of doctors and lawyers; legacies of professions. Why? Background.

    @ CF:

"Agape - My love, the state of Georgia now graduates 77.8% of its students. This is a better rate than the ENLIGHTENED City of Chicago which is at 51.9%

WHY is Georgia attacked while Chicago is the headquarters for "hope and change"?

YES I realize that I am comparing a STATE with a CITY."

Your last statement is the answer to your question.

Compare ATL with a city with the same population, socioeconomics, K-12 number of students, ratio of teacher to students in each city, percentage of black, white, hispanic, asian and other culture teachers, throw in the results from last years NCLB results for K-12, and how much money the county receives from the state for education then get back to me....sweetie...)

Although, your point is not wasted on me. The problem I see in ATL (which is where I now live) is that there is more money and focus on the Georgia University System than K-12. It appears that Georgia, as most states, would like to have people outside the state of Georgia to go to school here)translation - higher fees due to out of state tuition). Education on the university is, after all, a business.

As for the Michele Rhea issue...I think she did the wWashington Dc school children the best service she could give...she put them first.

By having that two teir system for teachers..she allows teachers to choose where they want to be in life in their careers...while breaking up that rock strong teachers union (or at least giving them food for thought and making them think).

DC is different, in that, we do not have statehood rights...so K-12education is a high priority...we already know that people are coming from other states to receive an education in one of the DC universities...there's no push for money for them.

    Peace.

I like your analogy, granny. I always ask this question when I hear those like Manning say the things they do: What's in it for him?

Without a doubt, CF, after hearing Manning, will concur with his reasoning and his conclusions.

Is Manning warning blacks or egging on whites?

What's his mantra. "White folks ain't gonna take it anymore, and I'm joining them!"

And why are whites so incline? Blacks are destroying the country and the "Mack Daddy" in the White House is the ringleader.

Manning's show is for whites. Blacks collectively will see him for what he is, an apologist for whites, and a hater of blacks.

Obviously he's on some whites' payroll. With his spiel, not too many educated blacks, professional or otherwise, are going to pay him to run them down.

Manning isn't new. We've seen his type many times in the past, perhaps not as well dressed, but with the same unmistakable message.

"You've made your Daddy mad, and he's gonna beat the tar out of you."
