Rules to live by when you order the fight.

I am on my way to my boys crib in South Jersey. He is ordering the Mayweather Mosley fight and having a few folks over.
That's all good as far as I am concerned, and I am hoping this experience is better than similar ones that I have had in the past with such gatherings. There are some rules that everyone who hosts a fight party should live by:

First, always tell folks up front what the cost is (if any) to chip in for the fight. And, conversely, if you are a guest you should offer to pay something whether the hosts asks you or not. Of course there are exceptions to this rule. I remember a few years back going to the home of the son of a very wealthy and powerful pol here in Philly to watch a fight. The kid had more money in his bank account than the GDP of most Third World countries, lived in Villanova- down the street from Eagle's coach, Andy Reid, no less- and yet when we all sat down to watch the fight he sprung the I am going to need a few dollars from each of you, rap. Obviously not all hosts are created equal, so you could forgive the guests for not offering to chip in with a scenario like that one.

Second, always make sure your cable bill is current and paid before you invite folks to watch a fight. I have never been to one of these, but I have heard stories where folks were getting ready to watch a fight and the host couldn't produce because....well, you know how some of you are, you like to pay your bills at the last minute.

Third, never invite guests with conflicts to the fight party. For instance, your boy is happily married now and you invite him and his wife to your fight party along with one of his exes. Not cool. Just too much going on if you get my drift. If the wife doesn't know the ex, the ex can make it very uncomfortable for your guest the entire night. If the wife does know the ex. your guest might not even get to watch the fight because of an early exit.

Finally, don't go to the fight party empty handed. Bring something to the party. Food. Beer. Anything. I won't be drinking-Hey it's South Jersey- I have represented too many folks with DUI cases, so I know better. But I will be bringing something for the folks who will.

So enjoy the fight folks, I am calling it for "pretty boy" by a unanimous decision.

No surprise, some rich people love to pull stunts like that, how do you think the rich stays rich? :)

I can't stand boxing, it's the most brutal sport next to football. But then watching muscled men in tights, or bouncing around in shorts can make up for all that Neanderthal trauma on my eyes.

  6. Thanks for the wisdom Laurel.

Shout out to Wellington. Nice job with the party, fam.

BTW, do I know how to call a fight or what?

La~audio, boxing is actually a science. It's art if done right. And you left out rugby. :)

Now I need to hit the sack, it's almost 2:00 a.m. Way past bedtime for my old ass.

  7. Boxing, football, and rugby... the three sports I participate in all got a shout out... or is that shout down?

    Add this rule:
Do not invite people who hate fights.

Boxing and rugby have long been considered the sports of the gentleman.

Of course I'm no gentleman, I just participate in hopes I get to hit one.

  8. I

I too have a few fight night stories. Here's one that sticks in my mind. Before Ultimate Fighting, X-box and multi-channel television, boxing and fight night were big deals. We used to rotate the event amongst a few close friends, I caught Bowe-Holyfield. The night was filled with food, drink and well....here it goes. I had about 75 people that night, women included. The guys would bring along their wives and girl friends. It was that kind of party. The beverages keep the night lively, but to add another bit of excitement, I offered a "buy-in". Well, for five dollars, a person could draw a card from the deck of 52 and that card would designate the fighter they had and the round in which he had to win the fight. The cards went like hotcakes and some were even re-sold for twice the amount to another person that just couldn't get with either Bowe or Holyfield. Man, can you imagine drawing the Jack Of Clubs (which meant you had Bowe by a knockout in the 11th round) and you were a Holyfield fan!? Listen, the night was wild. Not to mention the little crap game that was going on down in the basement *lol*. Plus I had a heavy bag down there. As you know, everyone thinks they can throw a punch(especially when a little tipsy) until they have to. That Congac told them they were king shyt, but their wives and girlfriends soon found out they wasn't very tough at all. In fact, the women lead the chorus of laughs that followed some of the guy's pitty-pats on the bag *lol*. Let me tell you, the fight was great, the food was good and the people were wonderful, it was a great night.

Field, I don't even ask for money when I host a fight. Well, you can't put a price on happiness and you sure can't buy great memories.

Oh, from what I saw last night, Floyd better not step in the ring with Pacquiao!

CareyCarey, I have to add no gambling at the fight party. :) And you are right: Folks shouldn't even ask for $ for the fight. But you know how some of my cousins are.

"Oh, from what I saw last night, Floyd better not step in the ring with Pacquiao!"

Now see, don't get me started on this one. I say Mayweather would out point him. I used to think that Manny would beat him because I didn't know if Mayweather could really take a punch, but after seeing him take that punch in the second round from Mosley and survive, I would have to pick him over Manny.

  18. Agreed - especially at partakers arriving empty handed. I cannot begin to tell you how much money I ended up spending during the NFL playoffs. People were arriving with stuff like drinks and bread. But no meat! Ha!

    I tell you the truth.

For some reason I am not a huge boxing fan any longer. I think after Mike Tyson had his run it kinda became redundant, imo.

Oh well I heard Mayweather pretty owned Mosley.

Back to the NBA playoffs. For a minute yesterday I thought the old KG had entered the building. Turns out it's still all about containing LeBron.

Jazz/Lakers should be a good one. Before it's all over I imagine Phil Jackson will switch Kobe to guard Deron Williams. Lakers think Westbrook owned Derek Fisher - wait til they get a load of Deron.

  19. [Field]: "Now see, don't get me started on this one. I say Mayweather would out point him"

Well Field, I know you're a very busy man, or at least by the looks of your numerous commenters, you have a crowded house. Consequently, you're a hard man to reach. Nevertheless, you got me started, so, I don't know how big of a boxing fan you are, but you love to rumble. Consequently, I had to come back and address your comment.

See, although Floyd "took those" heavy punches, the question is... can he continue to do so. I mean, Shane was shot after that round. Plus, he didn't follow those blows with any purposeful offense (in that round).

And again, I don't know if you've been following boxing, but, if you have, once a fighter like mayweather gets popped real good, they are never the same. Sure, he has heart, and he's well trained, but the brain remembers pain.

Field, Pacquiao's onslaught is relentless. He has never been easy to hit and his punches come from odd angles. Although Floyd said his new slower approach was designed to give the crowd a good fight, the truth is... He's slower and older. When that's added with Pacquiao's offense, speed, hooks and power, we're left with a confused older fighter, that's waiting to get hit. And in this case, hit he will be. Then, once he realizes that he is no longer the best pound for pound boxer, he'll throw caution to the wind (going all in), which will see his early exit. Pacquiao by a stunning KO!!!

Watch yourself Field. This ain't politics, this is the sweet science of boxing. Don't make your move to soon. *smile*

    Yet, it's your move.

OK, my move,I will bite. Hey, I know a thing or two about the "sweeet science". (I do live in Philly) Mayweather didn't dance as much in this fight. True. But his hand speed was still incredible. -Come on, you saw those right hand counters in the middle of the fight- And Shane didn't follow up with those punches because he couldn't.

I agree that the mind doesn't forget pain, but a chin is a chin. And, from the looks of things, mayweather has one.

Manny will not knock him out because his defense is just too good. Manny's reach is not long enough, and while I respect his heart and punching power, he just doesn't have the physical ability to get inside on Mayweather.

But we will see. That is why this fight has to happen. I just wish your boy would agree to an Olympic style test.

"Your friend, not mine. You are the one breaking bread with a "rich capitalist" watching a spectator sport where "poor oppressed people" who have no choice in "A-merry-ca" pound each other's brains out for fun and profit."

Yes, he is a friend, unlike you I have no problem breaking bread with all sorts of people. You capitalist only like to mix with your own.

BTW, I am not sure if "Money Mayweather" would agree with the last part of your comments.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Laughing @ "OK, my move,I will bite"

I knew you were from Philly, and some tough guys have come from that crowd(not Frazier's son), so I had a feeling you couldn't resist a good sparring match.

But, since it is my move, and you put your queen in check, my hand is on my knight. I am about to call check... Mate.

[Field]: "But his hand speed was still incredible. -Come on, you saw those right hand counters in the middle of the fight- And Shane didn't follow up with those punches because he couldn't"

Alas, now you're talking. Yes, I saw those counter-punches. But more importantly, did you see his defensive posture immediately after he was hit. For the rest of the round, he was just like your above mention of Shane, he (Mayweather) couldn't follow with punches.

And that's my basic point. Sure, it's easy for a fighter to get off when they're not under attack, or do not feel threatened by their opponent. Pac will not let up!

[Field]: "a chin is a chin. And, from the looks of things, mayweather has one.

Manny will not knock him out because his defense is just too good. Manny's reach is not long enough, and while I respect his heart and punching power, he just doesn't have the physical ability to get inside on Mayweather"

But Field, you do know that Pacquiao's reach is longer than Shane's - right? And you did see Floyd's defense get exposed by Shane - right? I mean, it wasn't Moseley's physical ability that lead to the thunderous right hand - right?

To be honest, Floyd did not get caught on the button. Yes, a chin is a chin, but it weakens over time, and, as I said, he didn't get hit on the sweet spot. However, I am not addressing the man's ability to take a shot. I am talking about his mindset after taking those types of hits. See, one tends to be more cautious after such hits, which leads to tightening up. In other words, the fighter "remembers" those hits, and thus, in Floyds case (being slower of feet & older) he loses his edge and what got him to the top of the mountain. If may not be a KO, I'll give you that, but based on the truth (not emotions) the fight will go Pacquiao's way. Well, unless you tell me something that I may have missed.

    Check...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Damn CareyCarey, you know your fight game. But that's check and not check-mate. OK, I will give you Manny's punching power and his reach (I am not sure it is longer than Mosley's but I will take your word for it) but I disagree with you about Mayweather's speed diminishing. I know he is 33, but he has only had 41 pro fights, and he has never been a brawler, so his speed is still there. Your boy Manny is not a natural welterweight, his best fighting weight is at 130, and you saw what Morales did to him when he stepped up to that weight class from even a lower weight.

Mayweather is a natural at 147 pounds, so he is stronger AND faster than Manny. The fight will go the distance, but Mayweather will outpoint Manny.

    Your move. :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I made a very bad mistake with a talented debator. I took you for granted by presenting something as a fact, when it was merely my opinion. Okay, I don't know if Manny's reach is longer than Floyds or Shanes. Dang, you got me.

But wait, it's true, I do enjoy boxing and have a passion for the sport. I've even sparred with a world champion who is now in the FED joint. *Gasp*

Yes, it's not check mate, but check this. When you talk about natural weight, it's true, Manny might be considered the smaller man. But history tells me that Floyd did not win his first belt at his present weight. Nor did most champions win their first title at their retirement weight. Ali even started as light heavy and so did Holyfield(cruiser?). Also, James Toney won his first belt @ about 154lbs, and his last @ over 200lbs. I mean, I question the words "natural weight".

But let me get back to the age thing. Many folks say age is nothing but a number. But in the boxing game, few fighters maintain their sharpness, and their belts, pass the age of Mayweather. Sure, there have been some and I probably can name them, but again, it's not the norm. More so, it's not the number of pro fights that takes it's toll on fighters. Many fighters have hundreds of amatuer bouts before they turn pro. A punch in the face (pain & destruction) does not rest at the feet of professional fighters. They just get paid. The Kronk gym and the gyms in Philly are notorious for battles in their own gyms.

Long before the bell rings for a "pro" fight, most fighters have been in wars.

Last, yes, Mayweather has never been a brawler, and that's my point. So, although you said this... "he has never been a brawler, so his speed is still there"

You may wish to believe that your boy still has speed, but speed at what? I mean, again, if history serve use well (and Floyed has not shown us any different) the man that has taken an extented stay away from boxing, (who takes on a few weak matches)then tries to regain his glory (at an older age) usually fails. Especially if that man is taking on a very formidable foe.

Field, did you hear that!? The clock is ticking. Your "King" is standing in quicksand.*smile*

But, I think I am going to let you make the last move. Well, this is your blog and I am trying to be a gentleman :-)

But you sure are working me.

  27. "So can we call this a stalemate"

Of course we can. But first, I have to admit that I've sort of, kind of, had this conversation before. So I was ready for you argument. Before the proposed (original) Pacquiao vs Mayweather fight, I did a post on the matchup.

Well, although I've edited the following (don't want to give you all my secrets, and thus make you a poor debater *smile*) I just wanted you to see that I've visited this theme before.

    Fight Night:(from several months ago)
    Cont....
The fight is on! But first, that's my son in the picture. No, not the little one, the one with the huge arms. Yeah, and that's two of my grandchildren. Once my arms looked like that. Yes sir, gun boats, but now I have flat bottom fish boats.

But here's the deal, my son and I are pimp or die boxing fans. I've said this in another post. But see, there was a time when I let him punch me in my arms as payment for a bet. Obviously I've had to move away from that because, I like my arms. I like being able to use my arms. So, now when we bet on a boxing match, it's all about the Benjamen's baby.

In the next big fight is Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather. I like Pacquiao, he's going with Mayweather. See, I don't have any spare money so I am planning on betting on my behind. For those that don't know, that's when a person makes a wager with no means of paying off the bet.

If I should lose this fight. He might not beat me to the ground but it's a safe bet that he'd hit me in my noodle arms. Are you kidding me, that's what we've always done. I mean, it's that macho thang between fathers and sons. And see, that last time I won, I blistered his arm. Yep, I still had a little sting to my punch. So I know he's ready for a little payback. But little does he know.... his eyes my shine/and his teeth may grin/but none of this ass/ is he gonna get in.

I might even tell him to bring his daughter along (in picture) so I can hold her and dare him to hit me. I don't know about that idea. The last time I held her, he said I wasn't holding her right. WHAT! I wiped the boo-boo off his behind and held him right. He said I handled her like I was holding a boy. I told him that was cool. I told him the next time him and his wants to go out and snap their fingers, do the stanky leg - DO NOT CALL ME.

I don't know what I am worried about, Floyd is too old and his speed is gone.

    Con't...
I know what I should do. The night of the fight I will come out of the spare bedroom, looking all sick and tired. Yes sir, I'll have on my PJ's with a little dribble down the front. I'll tell him that I've been sleeping in guest bedroom because I 've been too weak to worry about the throw up in the other bed.

    Cont...
But really, I should be careful of what I ask for. I want a smaller place so I don't feel like I am lost in space. But I might need all this room if I have to run from my son.

I could use more money, then I wouldn't have to be betting on my narrow ass. But then again, more money, more problems. Maybe I need to call Mayweather and ask him for a favor. Well, since he's going to make over 20 million for this fight(even aftr he loses), he could GIVE me a few bucks or PROTECT ME from my son. Now that wouldn't be right - would it? Who reneges on a bet and then finds someone to attack the other person, who is, incidentally their son?

I need a wife. That's what I need. I need someone to protect me. But wait, that might mean more problems.

Yes Field, it's a stalemate, and it's been fun.

And agate, if I build it, would you come? Remember though, no gambling, just slugs in the arm.

Granny thinking-->maybe, I'd better make that two cans of mace,a neck proof vest, and some body armor.

  36. Of course La~audio, he was a great fighter. What ever happened to him? Is he in the VI now? Wow! Small world.

Hey, do you know Tim Duncan? Since we are on a roll I figured I would take a shot at another famous VI sports figure. :)

  37. "Hey, do you know Tim Duncan? Since we are on a roll I figured I would take a shot at another famous VI sports figure. :)"

    Who Tim? spit.

LOL. When Tim was in high school age, I remember seeing him around though out the territory, I also remember a couple of us once stood in the movies line behind of him. And he lived couple houses down from a friend of mine, her mother would always have to ask TIm to turn his music down, I remember one time he practically ignored her. I guess maybe it's because her hair wasn't blonde. :)

btw, I have a co-worker who's grandmother grew up in the same backyard with Louis Farrakhan's mother in St. kitts. Her granny even remembers the time when Farrakhan was a calypsonian singer "The Charmer". LOL

And Kelsy Grammer, he was also born in the VI. His father was openly racist, he owned a bar and would get upset when a black person comes in, he would have to throw away the glass afterwards. My uncle witness this with his own eyes. And Kelsey's father made it clear that was the reason. No kidding.

I got couple stories about Doug E. Fresh too, before his family moved to the mainland, but those are third party from people I don't know well. :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh yeah Julian is still in the VI now, he is a true role model for the local youths, and he has a proud BLACK family. We take pride in him. At the moment he is training his sons for the ring as well. Julian is awesome!

I had to wear it to the fight...I was rooting for Mayweather (I should have wagered :)...and because I am one of those smack talking people at sporting events...I had to wear it to "let 'em know"...;)

I knew Mayweather was going to win beacuse...he waited for the purse to get like he wanted it to...as he said..."Shane just wants to fight to be fightin'...until they get that money right, I aint fightin'...I don't fight just to be fight'...:)
    (smile added by me)

    Peace.

  41. Ali was the one that filled the stands in boxin and up the pay scale. Before him, boxing was watched and listened to on the radio by a few. However, when Ali begin boxing, everybody took an interest in boxing...kids and females. Well, it was always in the beginning a male sport. It used to be a time when you could go to a fight and see empty seats, but Ali changed all that to a ticket sold out event.

Every where you went, you'd hear kids saying, "Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee" Not only that, whites tried to break his will and him, but they couldn't do it. He stood his ground and let them know he was a man!

  42. I had a dream about Ali back years ago when he came down sick. In the dream, I saw him in a hotel room and there was some type of fine, gas mist being emitted from a fake sprinkler system. Some times when I see him on television that dream always comes back to my mind, and I wondered if his illness was natural. Something about that dream always disturbed me.

He was someone that whites tried hard to bring down and kill his spirit, but he was a strong man and he maintained his self-esteem and pride in his heritage.

  43. I have stopped going to all parties surrounding fight as folks started getting use to me bringing Buffalo Chicken Dip and quite making anything else. I'm like dude do I look like a personal chef. Or when I am 'on my way I et the phone calls, could you stop and get..." Hell no.

  44. Ms loveBooks, Jullian was probably one of the best pure punchers I ever saw. However, he never could get over the top. I mean, he was in the mix, and his knockout ratio was off the chain, but McCallum(the body snatcher) hurt him. If I remember correctly, he had a couple of fights with Terry Norris. Jullian was a very good fighter. Back then the field was very crowded. McCaluum was later paralyzed in the ring by NIgel Benn.

I am glad to hear that Jullian is doing well. Ask him about McCallum & Terry Norris & Benn..

  45. [Granny]: "BTW, CareyCarey, I like your sense of humor. I bet you and your son have lots of fun together chopping it up about boxing"

Thanks and yes, humor and boxing is the one of the glues that bind my son and I. In fact, although we watch the fight (last night) @ different spots, we were texting each other the entire time. He didn't go with me this time because he said people get on his nerves during fight nights. *smile*

He thinks if they are not talking about boxing, they should be quiet. Well, that's my son and the apple didn't fall far from the tree.

  46. [Field]: "CareyCarey, I have added you to my blog roll, and your blog will be a regular stop from now on"

Look out now, I have arrived!

Seriously, I bow. But I am just a little guy with about 40 followers. I generally talk about the only subject I really know, and that's me.

The polictical field is covered and so are the racial topics. So I just had to find my own lane. I do however try to send a few messages through my journey. I mean, although nobodies blues is like mine, we've all been somewhere. Pain and struggle has no political affiliation, nor a race.

    Thanks

LOL! I feel ya! BTW, that is so true, humor is the glue that binds families together in the good and bad times. We had a lot of it in our family when I was growing up and still do. Humor keeps you sane when everything around you is falling apart, and it really is good medicine for the soul.

I'm there with bells on...but...I don't do slugs of any type...not the crawling kind...the flying kind...or the hitting kind....;)

  51. CareyCarey, that small following will grow. Bet on it. Just keep doing you.

And look out now: is that Mike McCallum (fellow yawdie) you are talking about? Yep, remember that Curry knockout? And he did have a classic bout with Jackson.

Damn La~Audio thanks for the 411 on Kelsey's dad. I didn't even know that he was from VI. Wow! And I kind of figured you wouldn't like Tim Duncan. :)

    LOL@Redbone Girl.

  52. LOL Field, no prob, ok what about Emile Griffith? :) Thanks for that info CareyCarey, I first met Julian when I was a young girl through his wife. I'll be sure to ask him whenever I do see him.

Oh Field I forgot to tell you that one of my parents grow up with Elrod Hendricks (major league baseball catcher).

Granny, maybe I should start paying more attention to sports after all, this was fun... LOL

  54. Stop it Field. If you want me to clog your spot, ask me another question about boxing *smile*.

McCallum vs Curry... YIKES, blast out.

But see, now you have me started. What about Castillo-Corrales I. Or how about... Check This out... Michael Carbajal-Humberto Gonzales I. or Marco Antonio Barrera-Erik Morales I & II? Barkley-Hearns I. Hearns-Hagler? Arturo Gatti was action personified, but took way too many punches. Taylor-Chavez was a great fight. Imo, the fight was stopped too soon and his life changed forever. I saw him fight after that one and it was sad. But Pryor-Arguelle(sp) as or even Gotti-Ward. As of late I might cast my vote for Corrales-Luis Castillo or even Casameyor. Please excuse my spelling, these names are coming off the top of my head.

So stop it Field, don't get me started talking about Trinidad, Aaron Pryor, Mike Tyson vs Buster Douglas, Naseem Hamed, Ike Quartey, Mayorga, B-Hop, Boy Toy Roy Jones, Junior Jones, Ali vs Frazier bouts "Thrilla in Manilla & The Rumble in The Jungle, Vernon Forrest, Spinks Brothers...

STOP IT FIELD! I don't want to talk about PRINCE Naseem Hameed!

Now that boy did it right. Put on a great show, got paid and got the hell out of the game. When he came in on that flying carpet I damn near died. I gave Hameed the nickname of rubberband man. I can't remember who he was fighting but he took a shot to the head and it seemed as if his head hit the canvas and his feet never left the ground, AND he won the fight! My man Prince, great show, short career but he got paid.

Field, please, don't say another word. Please don't say bo...

    Quit dissin Villanova.
You can still get a decently priced place there. $750 will still buy you something nice, with a good selection of private schools close by to choose from.

Not everybody who lives in VN is rich.

  56. Yeah, Laaudio, that was fun. I watched every fight that Ali had. He and Malcolm X were good friends.

  57. CareyCarey:

I remember those Spinks brothers. One of them name was Leon. I can't remember the other one's name. Both of them looked like they had been boxing all their life. Now, Tyson, when he came out to be interviewed, I was expecting him to have a real deep voice that sounds like a lion roaring because he looked fierce. When he opened his mouth to speak I thought at first he was playing with that little bitty voice.

I liked Sugar Ray Leonard and hate that his eye got messed up.
