I always hate to blog about colorism, because it always opens up to all kinds of craziness from black folks. Honestly, I would avoid it if I could, because lord knows we- as black folks- have enough stuff that divides us. (This is coming from someone who calls his blog the Field Negro.)
But sometimes when other people start talking about colorism and how it affects A-merry-can culture we can't help but talk about it.
My man Anderson Cooper (him of the very white hair) is running a series on CNN which is eye opening. Of course it isn't anything new for those of us in the know. The "Doll Test" might have been over fifty years ago, but it might as well have been yesterday. Colorism is real, and, sadly, it effects our children more than anyone else. (Lately I have been thinking a lot about our children, and for all the wrong reasons .) Most of us end up falling in love with ourselves and who we are as we get older. We learn to appreciate people for who they are and not how they look. And, as a result, we get in where we fit in within the grand scheme of things as human beings. Most us us. Some of us, like the children in CNN's program, sadly buy into what society is selling in terms of what beauty is supposed to look like. As a result,we live our entire lives with society's twisted projection on us or projecting our own messed up pathologies on others. We didn't need some fancy University of Chicago professor to do a study for us to realize colorisms lingering
effect on all of us. (Maybe even the people producing the show. Think about it.)
"(CNN) -- A white child looks at a picture of a black child and says she's bad because she's black. A black child says a white child is ugly because he's white. A white child says a black child is dumb because she has dark skin.
This isn't a schoolyard fight that takes a racial turn, not a vestige of the "Jim Crow" South; these are American schoolchildren in 2010. "
So where do they get it? We can't blame it all on television and marketing. Most of this behavior is learned right at home. Don't front, you have all heard that black parent: "Tenisha get your black nappy headed ass over here before I tear you a new one." I don't know what goes on in some white homes with their little children, but I watched CNN, so I can only guess.
"Spencer was also surprised that children's ideas about race, for the most part, don't evolve as they get older. The study showed that children's ideas about race change little from age 5 to age 10."The fact that there were no differences between younger children, who are very spontaneous because of where they are developmentally, versus older children, who are more thoughtful, given where they are in their thinking, I was a little surprised that we did not find differences."
Don't be surprised professor Spencer; it's called the real world.
DAILY ZINGER (Definitions), FROM ZING:
ReplyDeleteracial displacement -- Definition: The act of selecting the least meaningful racial issue, situation, event, for consideration, over more meaningful ones.
Example:
@cf--"In truth Black folks should be ashamed that an "Obama Spook" picture sent out by a Republican is able to get talked about more than the 16.5% unemployment rate that our people suffer to-damned-day."
Racial Displacer (n.): One who is guilty of "racial displacement."
Racial Displacement Identifier [R.D.I.] (n.): One who's preoccupied with identifying those who're guilty of racial displacement, and calling them out.
Chief proponent of this methodology, racial displacement identification: Constructive Feedback.
Racial displacement syndrome: an emotional disease that stems from a preoccupation with identifying racial displacement, and racial displacers.

ReplyDeleteHow I wish I could say this was news to me, sorry to say it s not.
While doing research in southernmost Alabama on adolescents in poverty (a longitudinal study in its' 8th year for University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB)) I was more than surprised to discover that young black children did not want to say they were black.
When asked what race they were, they would identify themselves by their color. Ex: "I'm not black, I'm brown." or "I'm not black, I'm light black."
Colorism was introduced to blacks in this nation as a tool to divide us and we keep falling into the same trap...we continue that despicable way of life to our detriment.
I hope this post serves as an illustration for those who were unaware and still want to believe that one shade of black is better or worse than another.
What happend to what James Brown taught us..."Say it loud...I'm black and I'm proud."
Peace.
~agape2010~
Yeah, James Brown...He was so proud to be black that he chased white hags his whole life.
ReplyDeleteAh, but don't forget what one learns in school or just walking around the neighborhood. And in books.
ReplyDeleteI'm white. I remember being scandalized as a toddler about my parents' Leslie Uggams fanship. They thought she was talented and beautiful. I said, how is it possible you have not gotten the message? Anyone can be talented and skilled, but only blond women are beautiful! It is one of the main criteria for beauty! I repeat, my amazement was at their apparently not having picked up on the cues that were all around us.
It was a really eye opening moment for figuring out what it was that I had already absorbed and that they had committed to deconstructing. So I'd say no, you can't blame the home for everything.

No hatin' on Brown. He was doing his best to improve the white race, one white woman at a time.
I watched and frankly, like Field, I wasn't surprised. It saddens me that the results for this type of test haven't changed in 40 years -- but not surprising.
ReplyDeleteThis only proves that we as Black people must control how are children are taught and how they few themselves first and foremost. White people think Black folks are inferior doesn't bother me -- that's what the dominate culture does, it views other people as lesser.
But when Black children are ingrained to hate themselves -- that bothers me.
I don't have cable TV anymore but I'm not surprised at all. A lot of this behavior comes from home and sadly television helps reinforce it.
ReplyDeleteHave y'all seen the Toyota Avalon commercials? What ticks me off is that if Toyota is going to have people of color (black or brown) in commercials, why bother when the ones that are shown have lighter skin than khaki pants? What kind of message is that sending to viewers?
@ Z:
ReplyDeleteI agree that it is nt only in the home where children learn...I believe that children learn eveywhere they are...school...playgrounds...
listening to adults....
However, parents have the biggest influemce on their children...
And...
I applaud your parents. In the heydays of Leslie Uggams whites were ostrasized for taking a stand on "race" issues WITH blacks...but many still did and do today.
Peace.
~agape2010~
sadly, count me in the 'not surprised' category either.
ReplyDeleteI hate these Tests! Or should I say I hate the RESULTS of these tests. My son was four years old when he came home and asked me “Mom am I black?” I said “Yes baby you are black.” Back then I thought to myself I was so busy trying to make sure he learned his ABCs and his 123s that I forgot to talk to him about RACE. You see my son was attending a VERY GOOD all black Christian school. I was so comfortable and had so much faith in the environment my son was in. Education and behavior were main emphasis in the school. And our children were receiving them both. When I hear parents talk about problems at school with race and having to teach their children at a young age. I don’t quite understand it because it was NEVER a factor where we came from and we are from the South. I always wanted to make sure my son was in a safe environment and we GOT THAT! I do think four year old teacher told the class they were black.

I was going to say "thanks" up until the last line where you infer that I have a "syndrome". IF seeking to apply DISCIPLINE to a group of people where they are made to PRIORITIZE the important stuff is a syndrome then let me tell you about some other "infected" people.
* When I was in college and unfocused romantically my girl at the time used to say "I don't spend quality time with people who are not serious". She had "Non-Quality Time Displacement Syndrome"
* Military boot camp sergeants who exact discipline, prompting individuals to focus on being soldiers have "Civilian Behavior Displacement Syndrome"
* Professors who seek to discipline the minds of young people so that they can become professionals in their line of business seek to focus the people's minds and displace all thoughts on their subject that don't stand up to scientific scrutiny - A Physics professor has "Unscientific Reasoning Displacement Syndrome".
CF--"I was going to say "thanks" up until the last line where you infer that I have a "syndrome". IF seeking to apply DISCIPLINE to a group of people where they are made to PRIORITIZE the important stuff is a syndrome then let me tell you about some other "infected" people."
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have another name for you, I'm sure, before I'm done.
Those other "infected" people, in those several situations you identified, didn't force anything upon you.
You were a willing participant, you were there voluntarily, and, therefore, chose the rigors of the various disciplines.
And, too, with your college girlfriend, the two of you were together by choice--no coercion involved.
Now, I want you to listen very carefully to your own words:
"IF seeking to apply DISCIPLINE to a group of people where they are made to PRIORITIZE the important stuff is a syndrome then let me tell you about some other "infected" people."
Apply discipline? You're not a drill Sergent. You're not a college professor.
Yes, we're here voluntarily, but we didn't sign on to undergo a "discipline" that you've elected to impose upon us.
A group of people?
We're not a group of people. We're individuals, who happen to stop by from time to time, to post, and to read posts.
We have little in common one with the other. Most of the commenters here hardly seem to get along, but you'd call us a "group of people," and attempt to "discipline" us as though we're a herd of cattle or sheep, to indoctrinate us against our will to follow a line reasoning only you can fully understand, because you believe that Black People are being threatened from within.
From what I've seen, you're the only threat to Black People, if you think we're here to be molded into your vision of what we should be.
They are made to PRIORITIZE the important stuff?
And who is going "to prioritize the important stuff," according to whose dictates--the fiat of Constructive Feedback?
We aren't slaves anymore, looking for a black savior, or any savior, to show us the way.
We're autonomous beings! Sure, we've made mistakes. Sure, we've had our struggles. Sure, it's going to take some of us a little while longer, for us all to overcome.
But what we don't need is someone to come along, and force us, make us accept their answers, their solutions to the Black Problem, to impose a discipline on us that we did voluntarily submit to, and to direct our time, and our attention.
CF, you have a messianic complex, not a syndrome at all.
And that name I promised: Constructive Feedback, the Black Deliverer.
Zing, I think CF well end up thanking you in the long run. Hell he should thank me as well. Where else cam you get therapy like this free of charge? And just think, he doesn't even need a couch.
ReplyDeleteArneader, thanks for sharing that. It's a great PSA for folks with kids.
"Colorism was introduced to blacks in this nation as a tool to divide us and we keep falling into the same trap...we continue that despicable way of life to our detriment."
Go on and preach agape.
"No hatin' on Brown. He was doing his best to improve the white race, one white woman at a time."
They don't call him Zing for nothin. :)
The "Black Deliverer".
ReplyDeleteCOOL.
Thank you!!!
Filled Negro - From now on do not call me "Destructive Wingnut". YOU are hereby commanded to call me "Constructive Feedback - The Black Deliverer". The modern day "Harriet Tubman"!!!
Here is a quote from me that you can use UptownSteve:
"If I had been able to show more "Democrats/Republicans who are Black" that they exist outside of the world of American Politics but instead have a conscious soul that would exist even IF they were transported to another place or time where there are no PARTIES......I would have been able to rescue a whole lot more of my people from their present contentment".
Thank you Zing. I like this new meme.
Still we have some problems with your analysis:
Those other "infected" people, in those several situations you identified, didn't force anything upon you.
You were a willing participant, you were there voluntarily, and, therefore, chose the rigors of the various disciplines.
And, too, with your college girlfriend, the two of you were together by choice--no coercion involved.
I am wondering how the notion of CHOICE has anything to do with the prevailing issue?
Ironically I am writing a post regarding the twin brother of "Racial Profiling", that being "Community Honor/Dignity Enforcement".
Zing - whereas Racial Profiling is the LAZY assignment of group stereotypes upon the INDIVIDUAL - the absence of some AFFIRMATIVE MANAGEMENT of the conduct of the individuals in your group has deleterious effects upon the masses. This results in this group being tagged with negative stereotypes by the actions of the UNMANAGED FEW.
Just to cut you off - YOU NEED NOT DO THIS FOR THE OUTSIDER'S BENEFIT (the White folks - if you were guessing UptownSteve). INSTEAD you need to do this per YOUR OWN COMPASS!!!!
At the end of the day it MATTERS NOT what OUTSIDERS think of you. When your DIGNITY exceeds their standards YOU will soar while they are still groveling over the basics.
Still Zing I am not sure if you are patting me on the back or resenting that I have the audacity to expect the GROUP to enforce certain standards of behavior.

Oh please stop it.
You launch into the "non-partisan" softshoe everytime I challenge you to explain WHY blacks should support the Republicans given that
a. Over the last 40 years the GOP has written off the black vote
b. The engine that has powered conservatism for the last 40 years is anti-black animus.
You black conservatives will never own up to these FACTS because then your "honorary white" ID card and decoder ring will be snatched away and you'll become just another black in the eyes of your beloved massa.
CF, if you answer these two questions honestly I swear on my kids I'll never be rude to you again.
Why won't the GOP attempt to appeal at least to the black middle and professional class?
Isn't it obvious that these folks believe in hard work, sacrfice, self-sufficiency and all the other rightwing canards?
(CNN) -- A white child looks at a picture of a black child and says she's bad because she's black. A black child says a white child is ugly because he's white. A white child says a black child is dumb because she has dark skin.
ReplyDeleteTo borrow from Art Linkletter -- Kids Say the Darnedest Things.
How many kids did CNN interview before getting the desired responses?
So where do they get it? We can't blame it all on television and marketing. Most of this behavior is learned right at home. Don't front, you have all heard that black parent: "Tenisha get your black nappy headed ass over here before I tear you a new one."
Yeah, I've heard the verbal abuse handed out by black mothers in NY City and witnessed the physical abuse when the verbal abuse fails.
I've heard blacks and hispanics discuss how little it takes to get them to hit their kids. They were proud of how swiftly they laid some hands on the kids, as though the hitting actually accomplished something of value.
I don't know what goes on in some white homes with their little children, but I watched CNN, so I can only guess.
What goes on in white homes? A lot less hitting.
Field,
ReplyDeleteBefore I proceed here's a link from the Daily Beast in which General Colin Powell admits lighter-skinned Blacks are frequently chosen as Leaders over Dark-skinned Blacks.
http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-01-10/harry-reid-was-right/?cid=hp:mainpromo2
Field thank you for recognizing and validating concerns about negative perceptions within African-American culture regarding certain physical traits which still exist in today's society.
Thank you for also recognizing that the origins of such negative perceptions often come from within our own homes. (Black Community)
Its NO mistake that African-Americans (male & females) who don't inhabit strong African like physical features are often treated more favorably.
Like it or not, light-skinned and brown-skinned African-Americans with light colored eyes and straighter or natural curly hair textures ARE in fact treated more favorably than African-Americans with Darker skin color and Kinky hair textures whether we choose to admit it or not.
Light-skinned and brown-skinned African-Americans with light colored eyes and straight, wavy or natural curly hair textures are NOT only treated more favorably by White America, but also by Black America.
Blacks can NO longer continue to blame White America for our problems when it is us who set such foolish standards for Leadership based on skin color, hair texture, eye color, height, etc.,
For example:
The City of Atlanta recently elected its FIRST Dark-Skinned Mayor with Kinky hair (Kasim Reed) since Maynard Jackson was elected as Atlanta's first Black mayor back in the 1970's.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (also from Georgia) was an exception to the skin color/ hair texture "Leadership Standard" appointed ONLY because he possessed such wonderful Oratory skills and....because its obvious he was truly annointed by God Almighty.
However even Dr. King himself chose to marry a Light-Skinned Black women with Natural Wavy hair.
To Val who wrote:
"Laurel you need to get a new Avatar because it looks like a regular negro".
Val in case your not aware a person of color doesn't need to be "High Yellow" (like my Mother) or a "Redbone" to carry fewer negroid features.
Through out my entire life I've had White people (in the North & South) ask me what am I mixed with or what origin am I?
Throughout my entire life I was often granted opportunities by White supervisors because of how I looked.
Medium to Lighter-skinned Brown people of color, with straight, wavy or natural curly hair and light colored eyes have been accepted into higher echelons of the American Black community since Slavery, just as Blacks who can pass for Whites.
This is nothing to boast about.
This is nothing yell from the rooftops.
Instead this standard for "BLACK LEADERSHIP" is something that should finally be eliminated from American Black Culture forever!
For those who don't believe me I challenge you to do your research.
Don't hate the messenger because I did NOT establish this foolish standard for "Black Leadership".
Here's a list of notable light-skinned Blacks Leaders or Brown skinned Black Leaders with Straight, Wavy or Natural Curly hair textures and/or...lighter colored eye color.
(Whitney Houston is an exception just like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. because of her voice.)
Vincent Ogé
Nat Turner
Frederick Douglass
Thurgood Marshall
Adam Clayton Powell, Jr
Malcom X
Elijah Muhammad
Louis Farrakhan
Angela Davis
Maynard Jackson
Doug Wilder
Halle Berry
Coretta Scott King
Dorothy Dandridge
Eunice Walker Johnson
Cab Calloway
Mariah Carey
Lena Horne
Shirley Franklin

even in an age where black parents DO have the option of choosing visibly diverse fare

ReplyDeleteThanks for providing more links to help prove Field's point about the destructive effects of Colorism within American Society AND the Black Community.
Instead of us fighting about personal opinions regarding this disturbing fact, why don't we (Black community) band together as a people to eliminate this foolish "Leadership Standard" forever??
Until we (Black Community) choose to eliminate this "Leadership Standard", Colorism will continue to divide us (Black Community) in this country.

Why?
Lighter-skinned and Brown-skinned Blacks appear less threatening to White America.
And.....
More Appealing to Black America.
Instead of becoming angry at me for publicly saying it, as I mentioned earlier why not band together and eliminate this foolish "Leadership Standard"?
Let's pray for this to become a reality among us (Black Community)...Soon!

ReplyDelete
I challenge you to explain WHY blacks should support the Republicans given that
WHEN HAVE I EVER FREAKING ASKED THE BLACK VOTER TO 'SUPPORT THE REPUBLICANS'?
I asked WHY - at a time when MISSION ACCOMPLISHED SIGNS are up all over our communities and yet.......IN CHICAGO SOME BLACKS ARE CALLING FOR THE 'NATIONAL GUARD TO PROTECT BLACK PEOPLE........WHAT IS MOTIVATING BLACKS TO "KEEP TRYING HARDER AT DOING THE SAME THING"?
Does everyone else notice that as I put forth this challenge to WhiteBowieSteve and Filled Negro they attempt to "OUT ME AS A REPUBLICAN"?
They are the main salesmen of the BLUE PILL, promising our people that if we ingest it OUR PROBLEMS WILL BE CURED.
I have the AUDACITY to test the EFFICACY OF THIS PHARMACEUTICAL CONCOCTION that you have been pushing on our people, winning the "Sales Man of the Year" from Merk in the process.
The long running comment about how "When the revolution comes - the Negroes most attached to the system will OPPOSE IT" should be applied to WhiteBowieSteve. His power and contentment comes from the status quo. As long as his party and ideology is standing strong (and things are great in Bowie MD) he could care LESS about the situation with so many others. Don't be fooled - he is going to FIGHT against any change in focus by Black America as we seek more comprehensive and enduring progression.
Think about it people. In the context of the SOLUTION FOR OUR COMMUNITY - the opposite of "Black people are VOTING FOR DEMOCRATS IN EXPECTATION THAT OUR CHALLENGES WILL BE SOLVED - per the advocacy of Black Leaders" IS NOT/ IS NOT/ IS NOT/ IS NOT Vote for REPUBLICANS instead.
In my view the opposite of outsourcing our community problems to the AMERICAN POLITICAL DOMAIN is - working to fortify the parallel domain that has suffered from BENIGN NEGLECT!!!!
The "Community Cultural Consciousness and Competency Development Domain".
* What if the schools in our community had improved consistent QUALITY as triggered by a COMPETENCY DEVELOPMENT initiative which saw the importance of PREPARING our young people to be the PROFESSIONAL SERVICE AGENTS that we need to retain the STANDARD OF LIVING for the community?
Is this a POLITICAL LOSS for Black folks?
* WHAT IF our streets were made SAFER because a CULTURAL CONSCIOUSNESS movement aligned the MESSAGES that flow in our community via entertainment/ political speech / education and general discussion between male and female were placed in alignment with HIGHER VALUES AND RESPECT?
Is this a POLITICAL LOSS in that we did not do this through the AMERICAN POLITICAL PROCESS?
If you notice WhiteBowieSteve is forced to return to the same tired themes (CS is a Republican - don't fall for the trick) because he IS A POLITICAL SELLOUT OPERATIVE.
I challenge YOU to be honest with yourself and tell me WHAT MORE can Black people RATIONALLY expect to receive from the POLITICAL PROCESS in regards to addressing our problems?
Instead what we see in the news story below is with THE DEKALB COUNTY BOARD IN FAVORABLE HANDS......a Black woman STILL was UNJUSTLY LOCKED UP due to an error in record keeping among FAVORABLE PEOPLE.

Here are my answers:
1) Admit such a problem DOES in fact STILL exist today in American Black society.
2) Its not hard, just STOP Discriminating against Dark-Skinned Blacks by appointing, electing and selecting MORE Dark-Skinned Black Leaders!
Not just Qualified Light-Skinned Blacks.
Not just Qualified Brown-Skinned Blacks.
Not just Qualified Blacks with Straight, Wavy or Naturally curly hair and light colored eyes.
You know where I'm coming from!
I'm speaking of Qualified Blacks with Darker hued skin color, Kinky hair and Black eyes. (African or Negroid features)
How can we expect Black Children to love themselves regardless if they are Light, Brown or Dark-Skinned if we (Black Community) continue to select Black Leaders who appear physically "less threatening" to White America?
Choosing Dark-Skinned Black Leaders to represent America's Black Community should be the norm NOT the exception.
Also...
I don't believe when we stand before God one day he will have a line for Whites, Asians, Hispanics, Blacks, Dark-Skinned Blacks, Light-Skinned Blacks, Brown-Skinned.
Since God Almighty or the Lord Jesus Christ doesn't love us or judge us based upon Skin Color or Skin Tone, Eye Color, Hair Texture, Height, Education, Where we live, etc., Than why should we??

A look around the world suggests that blacks are on their best behavior in the US. In Africa's black nations, life is, as they say, nasty, brutish and short.
Widespread disease and violence combine to keep the African nations in varying degrees of chaos, misery and dysfunction.
If there were a prospering, modern black nation somewhere in the world, white attitudes would become more sympathetic. But until blacks prove they can run a country that is more than a half-step from a state of nature, white expectations for blacks will remain low.

ReplyDeleteThis shyt ain't news. It's common knowledge that what a kid hears at home he/she will take with them as they step outside the front door. If you are an AA, you most likel;y have experienced many situations in the public ways where some little white kid will stare at you as if you just stepped out of a flying saucer. Generally the when the parents take note that their offsping is riveted on looking at "the black man", they will say "Oh Jimmy don't stare at the NICE man, it's not polite". Then little Jimmy will sock it to 'em by pointing directly at you and say out loud, "look mommy, he's a brown man!" At this time red rushes up the cheeks of the mother and she will snatch the kid around and carry him away in a different direction.
You can bet that that kid is only expressing in his childish way some of the stuff he's heard from his parents at home. You damn sure don't need a study to figure this stuff out in racist America. Peace....

Once again here's a list of notable light-skinned Blacks Leaders or Brown skinned Black Leaders with Straight, Wavy or Natural Curly hair textures and/or...lighter colored eye color.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an exception to the skin color/ hair texture "Leadership Standard" appointed ONLY because he possessed such wonderful Oratory skills and....because its obvious he was truly annointed by God Almighty.
However even Dr. King himself chose to marry a Light-Skinned Black women with Natural Wavy hair.

Notice that when I put forth the reframing of your "Why don't Black people vote for Republicans" question YOU were forced to resort to name calling because YOU could not handle my CORRECTION OF YOUR CONSTRUCT.
Still I have to thank you Steve. Over the past (approximate) 3 years that I have been debating you - you more than just about any other person have showed me the Debate Tactics that are used by "Black Quasi-Socialist Progressive-Fundamentalist Racism Chasers" and "Democrats who are Black".
In all seriousness - what I learn from you and Filled Negro is highly effective when used in person. (This despite the fact that I work to talk about everything other than politics with Black folks during social events).
Thank you Steve.

Thats the problem. I have never figured out what Glen Ford and Peter Gamble are ultimately driving for.
Go take a look at their board of directors AB.
(Might be a dated list but) They have:
* Juliane Malveaux
* Michael Eric Dyson
* Ron Daniels
and several other BLACK, PROGRESSIVE political operatives who have been loyal Democrats for some time.
AB - while it may be the editorial position of Black Commentator/ Black Agenda Report to push Black elected officials and the Democratic Party LEFTWARD - the truth is that unlike they do with the GOP and Conservatives THEY HAVE NO INTENTION OF "TORPEDOING" these people's position of power.
(Note - in the mind of Steve and Filled Negro - my statement above proves that I am a Republican when I am merely making a factually observable point).
The key point that I have never understood about "Black Commentator" in the years that I have been monitoring them is that in as much as they are "anti-capitalist", anti-corporate - when it comes to stopping "The Flight Of Capital From The Cities" which appears to be a central point to their "Black Community Redevelopment" plans it stands to reason that despite their front - they can't possibly seek to destroy corporations for this is the key funding source that they seek to confiscate their funds from.

Blacks are not worse than everybody else but Black culture is dysfunctional in many parts of the world. This is legacy of rapid modernization, colonial dislocation and, especially in the U.S., slavery and segregation, but it's perpetuation is not primarily due to the white man's racism.
The dysfunctionality is nutured by the modern liberal political structure which needs to keep blacks in a certain amount of misery. I'm am not saying that voting republican is the answer, I am saying that speaking truth about the democratic plantation is the first step toward breaking the cycle of manipulation.

I believe my exact printed words were:
"Field,
Before I proceed here's a link from the Daily Beast in which General Colin Powell admits lighter-skinned Blacks are frequently chosen as Leaders over Dark-skinned Blacks.
http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-01-10/harry-reid-was-right/?cid=hp:mainpromo2
The City of Atlanta recently elected its FIRST Dark-Skinned Black Mayor with Kinky hair (Kasim Reed) since Maynard Jackson was elected as Atlanta's first Black mayor back in the 1970's.
Here's a list of notable light-skinned Blacks Leaders or Brown skinned Black Leaders with Straight, Wavy or Natural Curly hair textures and/or...lighter colored eye color.
(Whitney Houston is an exception just like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. because of her voice.)
Don't hate the messenger because I did NOT establish this foolish standard for "Black Leadership".

ReplyDeleteField I think you were being prophetic with the opening line of your post. You are right my brother "it always opens up to all kinds of craziness from black folks. Honestly, I would avoid it if I could, because lord knows we- as black folks- have enough stuff that divides us."
ReplyDeleteI think the most interesting part of the study were the conclusions drawn here (from the CNN website):
"All kids on the one hand are exposed to the stereotypes" she said. "What's really significant here is that white children are learning or maintaining those stereotypes much more strongly than the African-American children. Therefore, the white youngsters are even more stereotypic in their responses concerning attitudes, beliefs and attitudes and preferences than the African-American children."
Spencer says this may be happening because "parents of color in particular had the extra burden of helping to function as an interpretative wedge for their children. Parents have to reframe what children experience ... and the fact that white children and families don't have to engage in that level of parenting, I think, does suggest a level of entitlement. You can spend more time on spelling, math and reading, because you don't have that extra task of basically reframing messages that children get from society."
Ironically, black parents don't always prepare their children for the world that their children will have to face no matter how much we wish it wasn't the way it is. When black parents fail to educate their children about their history in the world, in the US and the reality that some folks harbor deep seated prejudices, they are setting up their children for heartbreak.
I have seen the results of this ignorance played out on a few occassions and it has not gone well for the naive victim, who somehow assumed that there was no such thing as race prejudice and that the majority of whites are going to accept them in their club no matter how qualified.

AB - Obama is Black. Get over the nonsense.
ReplyDeleteUTS - Stop making fun of AB.
Ok, I want to address the whole idea of Alicia's for so-called 'Black Agenda'. In short -- people who are pissy that Obama isn't demanding reparations need to get their heads out their behinds.
First of all. Other than favorite radical rallying cries like Mumia and reparations, what in a so-called Black agenda wouldn't the concern of working class whites or Latinos? The answer -- nothing. That's not how the game is played anymore -- isolated identity politics went out with the dashiki. Who in this modern political climate would feel its smart to start a resource cat fight with Latinos and Labor unions?
And he's the President of the United States, not just the President of Black people. Its not his job to carry our niche concerns -- that's your federal representatives' job. If there's no Black Agenda being brought forward -- kick your Congressman and Senator to the curb.
Here's an idea -- instead of waiting for Obama, Bush, Clinton or the Great Pumpkin to take up our agenda (which, BTW, many Black folks wouldn't agree with, even in the fields), how about we work with others with common cause (gays, immigrants, environmentalists, etc.) to make a encompassing progressive agenda and push that and make our representatives do their jobs?
Conservatives are out of touch, mean-spirited and sometimes a little crazy. But I'll credit them for knowing when its time to play ball. Progressives still think that its 1972 -- every sliver of an interest group for themselves.
This idea of a hyper tribalism on the Left is what cripples all of us.

wake up you masochostic suicidal evader!!!
-Laurel I would dispute your list of black leaders. I would also take issue with your narrow and limited view on colorism.
ReplyDeleteIn all my years (and I have been an activist during most and a journalist and on the cutting edge of black affairs and thought) I have never heard Coretta Scott King identified as light-skinned.
I think it would be fair to say that she is not dark, but light skinned I don't believe fits.
I also have never seen Frederick Douglass as light skinned. He is a lighter brown, but I don't think he could be categorized as light skinned.
And Rev Wright was the pastor of just one church. I don't think its right to suggest that he would not be pastor if he were not a lighter skinned brother. I don't see how that fits your point, unless you are implying that churches should call pastors based on some color requirement.
Anyway that part of your argument has a tremendous hole in it since there are thousands of black pastors of every hue and complexion.
But it makes my point that we do indeed have to move on from this, and I mean also the folks that want to make an issue out of it in every case when its not always a part of the decision making process. Most light skinned folks are indeed and were indeed qualified for their task.
And I think this is a very complex issue but it doesn't move us forward and help us to solve the myriad problems that we face as black folks in the US. In actuality it has the potential to divide us further. Trust me during more activist times folks didn't sit around thinking lets elect the light skinned brother to lead the protest because he is light skinned. It simply didn't happen that way.

ReplyDelete"First of all. Other than favorite radical rallying cries like Mumia and reparations, what in a so-called Black agenda wouldn't the concern of working class whites or Latinos? The answer -- nothing. That's not how the game is played anymore -- isolated identity politics went out with the dashiki. Who in this modern political climate would feel its smart to start a resource cat fight with Latinos and Labor unions?"
Thanks LAC.
Don't expect any answers to your questions though.
A few months back we were engaged in a bm/protofemme blog battle and you said this:
"The Assata Wannabe: A straight up mau-mau loon who looks for conspiracies everywhere. They snub their noses at most Black folks for not thinking like them. They look for racism everywhere, even when there is no "there" there. They think they're in the field's with the rest of us, but they're off the plantation barking at the moon.......they nitpick every detail of life for some pro-Black POV."
Guess what brutha?

ReplyDeleteShould the black community and later all communities who were feeling the anti-capitalist and anti-racist message of Malcolm X, have rejected him because he was lighter skinned.
Let me put it another way. Was there someone more qualified at the time who should have taken the leadership mantle that Malcolm X took first in the Nation of Islam and later when he broke from them and developed an internationlist as well as nationalist position?
Did Julian Bond step over a more qualified darker skinned brother when he was elected to the Georgia legislature or when he took over the reigns of the NAACP? Was their someone darker in that region who was better at articulating the needs of black people at the time?
Did Adam Clayton Powell steal the mantle for a more able dark skinned brother who was much more capable of fighting for civil rights legislation?
I think your assessment is off and you make too much of this. It is not as prevalent as before in our community and its important to note that part of the problem is that this colorism is enforced stringently in the majority community, which makes it harder to go away.
However to be fair, I think that there are some folks who try to enforce these color qualifications especially some of the old monied folks among the black upper middle class and black bourgeoisie. But we have to work around it.
What are lighter skinned black folks to do if they are preferred in commercials and in Hollywood than darker skinned black folks?
I think Laurel we just have to do the best we can to embrace all of our members, but we don't help by highlighting these difference many of which have been unconsciously thrust upon our unconscious minds.

ReplyDelete"how about we work with others with common cause (gays, immigrants, environmentalists, etc.) to make a encompassing progressive agenda and push that and make our representatives do their jobs?"
Ditto LAC I agree with this statement and with your statement about all the infighting and narrowness of leftist groups. I think you are right we have to work with others who have similar agendas. But while you seem to be really hard on progressives, I personally know that there have been many coalitions of progressives and folks who are decidely anti-capitalist. I think they are deserving of your criticism, but you should also know that in some regions folks have come together from different ethnic groups -including whites- to work for serious change around issues relevant to the community.
In fact there has been some good organizing around the immigrant rights issues in which forward thinking blacks whites, Latinos, Asians and others have been working together. I know I have been part of these coalitions.
LAC you also said: "what in a so-called Black agenda wouldn't the concern of working class whites or Latinos? The answer -- nothing.
Actually my brother, racism aimed at black folks is something that black folks have to uniquely struggle with, now and have had to since blacks were enslaved because of their color and later terrorized and segregated because of their color.
AB great quote "There is nothing so unequal as the equal treatment of unequal people"

I respect allllll that you just wrote don't agree but I respect your right to express your opinion.
However...
If "Colorism" within the Black community is no big deal or no longer exists, why did it take you 1,709 words to say whatever it was you just wrote?
Were you trying to shed light on an intelligent point not already mentioned in Field's post or already listed above or...
were you simply attempting to "bring me down" in a subtle manner?

ReplyDeleteYour right. They are.
Just because he's the FIRST Black President doesn't mean we should give him a pass.
Why is it okay for him to recognize Hispanic & Jews by nominating Sotomayor & Elena Kagan for the U.S. Supreme Court.
Okay for him to recognize Arabs & Muslims.
Okay for him to even recognize the Irish but....
We foolish Blacks should NOT expect him to help or recognize us too?
I call Bull on that one!
It's high time the Black community STOP electing Black Leaders simply for symbolic purposes only.
Its times we demand they actually do something for their ethnic group once they get into Public Office.
This is why I rarely vote for Black Leaders.
Call me whatever you will.
Why should I vote for someone just because he or she is Black?
I partially agree with LAC.
While its true we should carefully demand more from our elected Local and congressional leaders, we should also demand more from our President.
And yes he is OUR President because Blacks are also included in America's Melting Pot.

You may not be familiar with my style sister so let me say clearly that it is never, never, never ever my intention to bring you down. It would make a very bad preacher/activist.
Is not my attention to offend.
I was just stating and making my case. And I think I made it. And I was not saying that colorism does not exist of course it does. I was trying to make the point that we have to figure out ways to unite, Lord knows we have enough things dividing us. I was also trying to make the point that maybe you made too much of your point because the folks you named were more than qualified to hold the position of leadership that they held and thank God for some of them.
Now those who attack black folks or working people and don't have their interests at heart, those folks I might attack or try to bring down as you say.
We are sometimes debating sometimes discussing sometimes discussing and so in that context I might seem a bit forthright but nothing more is meant by it.
Arguments polemics sometimes however do get sharp at times.
I am glad you respect "my right" to disagree with you. I try to not talk about what I don't know so I am just responding with my informed opinion.
BTW I always assume folks have the right to say what they want. I just think folks should also be willing to bear the consequences.
