"These are the times that try men's souls"

I haven't taken a close look at his O ness lately, but I suspect that he has a lot more gray hairs on his head, and those lines in his face are getting deeper. Being a president of these divided states will do that to you. I wonder if he knew what he was getting himself into?

The glitz and glory of his historic achievement has worn off, and now all the problems that comes with being the most powerful man on earth are front and center on his doorstep.

Pick one: Ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Two wars raging against....hell I don't even know who we are fighting. I guess it's al Qaeda. The North and South Koreans are about to throw down. The Iranians are about to go radioactive. The Middle East, once again, is a powder keg of volatility. Here at home the Dow is tanking, (I think it dropped below 9,000.00 on Friday)the unemployment numbers aren't moving, and the right wingnuts are having fifties flash backs. And now, to add insult to injury, it looks like some of his loyal constituents on the left are abandoning him.

" Bemoaning Obama's passivity after the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the director Spike Lee thundered: "He's very calm, cool, collected. But, one time, go off! If there's any one time to go off, this is it, because this is a disaster."

This is the same Spike Lee who once described Obama's election as a "seismic" change that represented "a better day not only for the United States but for the world".
The ladies of The View, the liberal-dominated morning talk show moderated by Whoopi Goldberg, spent a lot of time last week sympathising with Mrs Obama about how difficult it must be to argue with a husband who never shows any fire or emotion.

Even the liberal chattering classes are deserting Obama. Maureen Dowd of the New York Times jeered that his "Yes we can" slogan had been downgraded to "Will we ever?", while fellow columnist Frank Rich blasted his "recurrent tardiness in defining exactly what he wants done".

Now, to be fair, those quotes were from the conservative British Newspaper, The Telegraph . But there is something to what that author is saying in his article. The natives are getting restless. O is no longer getting the benefit of the doubt-- but this is what happens when you follow the frat boy into the batters box.

Having said all of that; is there a sane person in A-merry-ca who doesn't remember how cozy the frat boy and his side kick were with the oil industry? Remember all those meetings? As we watch images of those dead birds, let's not forget how we got here. Yes, his O ness is a little slow on the take with this mess, but there wouldn't have been any mess with a little more regulation. But you know how the big business folks are, always trying to save a buck. And if they can get the government to be complicit with them, all the better. But I seriously digress, back to O.

So as he looks forward to 2012, I wonder if his O ness will want to put himself through this? He has already secured his legacy in A-merry-can history, and he can ride off into the sunset and make millions speaking and writing books while he watches his two beautiful daughters grow up.
I am asking the question, but I already know the answer: he will run.

I know one thing, if it wasn't for black folks and other minorities he would be toast. Folks in the majority population are running away from him faster that Usain Bolt. Some will come back by election time, and some won't. It will be interesting to see if it will be enough to get him over the top again, and if he can catch lightening in a bottle one more time. Sadly, if he keeps getting the kind of advice that he has been from his inner circle, it won't be.

"The young Texans who seemed genetically incapable of viewing any criticism of George W Bush as less than treason may have gone but a similar cult has replaced them. The Obamatrons who now populate Washington have iPads under their arms and greet each other with fist bumps. Earnest, geeky types, they look upon anyone who does not worship Obama with pity – such a being must be too stupid or bigoted to know better.

Obama has never been wracked by self-doubt and he is unusually self-contained for a politician. He seems not to need people or reassurance. In office, this is dangerous – he sometimes seems to be living in a cocoon."
I think I have heard that before. But the last guy in the "cocoon" actually enjoyed being in there, and, sadly, this is the result.

As far as this oil spill, I saw on CNN where they flash-backed to the Gulf War in the '90s. Oil well fires on top of millions of gallons spilled...hey, we could be in a worse situation!

Ok, besides Bill getting mad at the Lewinsky questions.

Im trying to think of any, and I cant (besides good old Bill). But I also dont like to watch politicians speak...I dont like being lied to over and over.

  11. Yeah and if Obama goes off these same people will then say he's out of control.

I think most regulatory agencies in this country are a joke and that is why we have a spill in the Gulf.

And Mr Field, I'm not sure how many African Americans are going to be supporting Mr. Obama in 2012.

I'm sure a majority will but there are a great number of us who are giving him the side-eye and have been for a while now.

I'd rather have a White President than a Black one who is afraid to do anything for African Americans for fear of angering racist Whites, who by the way will never vote for him anyway.

Mr. Obama's trickle down theory for African Americans was pretty much the last straw for me.

Most humans have feelings. In case you didn't know it, that is what makes us human. That is, we are not a one-dimensional being, have a heart with feelings also. You being Black, ought to know what feelings are like. FN blog depends on the feelings of Blacks. Otherwise, it would be a very boring site.

Hathor, do you know much about politics? Or are you just hypnotized by the color of Obama's skin and anything he does is 'OK' with you?

Will you be moving to Israel or trying to move into a Jewish neighborhood in the suburbs of Philly?

O is a politician and like any other politician he wants power and to remain in power. Washington is a place for deals and making deals and he has fallen back into the environment of Washington to think that he will have to make certain deals for bills to pass--and he will stop at NOTHING, especially with Rahm at his side.
I understand governance, but he has tarnished his name and image.

Obama needs to stand up for something. Pragmatism has its uses, but we elected him because of the ideals he projected and promised he would live up to.

In other words, he needs to STOP making deals with the DEVIL in order to perpetuate his power, prestige, and chances of being re-elected.

    LAC King:

When you say that "Obama's competition is a joke" it appears that you are focusing upon the SEAT OF PRESIDENT alone.

Why don't you speak of "Obama - head of the MACHINE"?

    * Did Obama's COMPETITION make Detroit, Trenton and Cleveland as they are today or did the MACHINE that Obama sits atop of preside over these places as they collapsed? WHY don't they fear being voted out of office?

    * Did Obama's COMPETITION make promises about how their ascent into POWER would benefit their supporters academically, economically and with respect to public safety?

Here is the deal LAC King - you along with other progressives are always STRUGGLING. You have this carrot that is always inches away from you. Even as you gain more political seats that CARROT moves one more inch forward, requiring you to NOT CHALLENGE THE MACHINE but to support it lest you never grab it.

Will LAC King and others ever reach the point where they have DEFIND THEIR OWN INTERESTS, realize that NEITHER those who they have fought against NOR those who they doggedly SUPPORTED have actually delivered upon their interests - and begin to withdraw the notion that your interests are fused with the interests of these EXTERNAL FORCES as you seek to find YOURSELF in your own thoughts and actions.

Here is the problem with this one Filled Negro. SPIKE LEE is not "GOING OFF" on OBAMA. Spike Lee is living vicariously THOUGH OBAMA and demanding that OBAMA BE HIS VOICE in attacking the EVIL CORPORATIONS that have destroyed the environment.

Think about it Filled Negro: What if Spike Lee told GEORGE BUSH to "Go off during Katrina". "Get Mad at all of the array of government agents that have failed to respond?"

    IT WOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED.
Lee wanted to TAKE OUT BUSH.
Lee wants OBAMA make a positive impression so that the "Spike Lee Joint" movie about Obama in 2020 can be majority positive.

Spike Lee is a fatally compromised individual to be an OBJECTIVE commentator about Obama and his results.

LAC King knows the trick. (as does Obama). Obama's loyal supporters HATE BUSH more than they:

    * Hate being unemployed right now
    * Hate having the government deficits at all levels trigger government spending cuts that impact them
    * Hate being terrorized in their own communities, despite them being controlled by the machine that Obama sits atop of.

Val - in 2012 the ONLY thing that will be differ is that we will see fewer "Martin Luther King / Obama" t-shirts as many have stopped DREAMING and they realize that life is far more complex than "Hope and Change" lead them to believe.

As for Robben, that couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Liverpool fans hate him as much as Bayern fans love him.

Wrong! I welcome debate if you can actually make sense. So far I am not seeing any solutions from you or your ideological soul-mates.
BTW, one day I will actually have to teach you about Philly politics, you have been articulating a false narrative on this board for awhile now about how it works. The dems might seem to be in charge on its face, but that is be design by the repub party bosses and their ward leaders. Believe me, they have as much power in this city as the dems. They control the courts, the parking authority, and a few other agencies. And, they have representation on city council. (Some council members are dems in name only, not in ideology) I suspect that some of the other cities that you are always talking about are set up the same way.

  44. Gregory, I hope this tournament isn't going to be snake bit. I see they had a stampede in a stadium outside of Johannesburg today. It was a match between Nigeria and North Korea, and it was free.

    Field,
Another way of looking at it is that the number of injured stars could provide a chance for countries that would ordinarily never make it past the Round of 16.

England is one bad tackle away from losing Rooney. After losing Ferdinand this week to training injuring, that could be catastrophic.

Drogba's injury is not only bad for Ivory Coast but Africa in general. Essien is out, damaging Ghana's chances, and Eto'o is threatening to walk out on Cameroon (something I find difficult to believe). SA also has injury worries but even a fit side would have difficulty in their pool.

Brazil's main goalkeeper, Julio Cesar, is in dodgy shape. He's not expected to miss any games at this point but that could change after a collision in the 6m box.

I read about the stampede. WTF? TIA. If I make to ZA I will send you daily updates, dependent on connectivity and sobriety.

Everyone of those white leaders many 2nd tier level leaders were never in the global iconic staure of MLK, Mandela, Jesus..

Again in the modern era white males simply do not make great leaders.

Obama of course is not a great leader either..

  48. The White House has had a serious communication problem. They have a problem of connecting and conveying a clear message on what they envision by way of policy.

This is the reason those good folks on the right managed to dominate the airwaves with nothing but lies during only the most significant legislation in a hundred years otherwise known as Health Care Reform.

I know Obama is a cool laid back kinda guy. But hell he knows when to get gully and put Repubs and naysayers on blast. He has dione this even in recent weeks as the 2010 campaign season has kicked off.

So yes, I agree that Americans are generally simple minded people who find faith in rhetoric and fiery action. Hell, wasn't that how Bush was able to lie and get the country into Iraq?

Bottom line: Obama needs to, or should have done a better job of convincing the American people that he was "pissed off", and wasn't gonna fuck with BP too long on this.

Of course it's hard to do when B.P. gave the Obama campaign the most money (in history) to one presidential candidate. At th end of the day, Obama needs to do a better job of communicating the fact, than in Ancient Hebrew the phrase "YES WE CAN," actually read, "I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIGHT-SKINDEDED!"

Field I think you are minimizing the presidents role in this. Obama is just as much a part of this system as anyone else has that sat in it before him. The trick is to get folks to think otherwise.

Like he really is a man of the people he wants to oppose the bad corporatists whent the truth of the matter is that he put the same kind of folks in charge of the regulation.

"Obama received $71,051 in BP-linked contributions for his presidential campaign, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsible Politics. All of the money came from BP employees, not the company. Obama did not accept contributions from political action committees; none of this is from BP's PAC.
The difference is notable because Obama raised far more money and from far more individuals than any other candidate during the presidential campaign so it makes sense that he would raise more from BP and many other company employees. The BP contributions, however, represent only .01 percent of the nearly $800 million Obama raised. I'd call this a tiny drop in the bucket."

They burned for EIGHT MONTHS and each day SIX MILLION BARRELS of oil burned.

Meanwhile, the economy of Louisiana depends on oil drilling. The offshore business is crucial to the state.

Therefore, if Obama stops drillers from exploring offshore in deep water, he will worsen America's economic problems.

If we're lucky, he will do just that, and set the stage for losing in 2012.

There is no alternative to oil and no amount of wishing will change the reality.

Moreover, with respect to the future of energy, the future is controlled by physics and chemistry, two sciences no president controls.

Smart you say? Aren't you forgetting several salient points. We have "improve offshore drilling techniques". No one is disputing that. Drilling one mile down, miles offshore is one technological marvel, probably ranking right up there with the Wonders of the Modern World.

Now, isn't that telling...improved drilling capabilities, but not the accompanying technology to prevent spill disasters.

Where we lag behind is on the development of technology to prevent oil-spill disasters, or to minimize the risk of such disasters to make drilling in deep waters (or shallow waters) an acceptable risk.

Safety standards? Well, we had safety standards. What we didn't have are regulators who are earnestly going about their job of regulating.

Besides, oil industry perks were too lucrative. A government salary just don't measure up to what all that oil money can buy.

Short-term loss must precede long-term gains. The alternative is a "no-win." And if that's acceptable to you, then, you, too, are afflicted with the blindness that besets so many of those who're killing the planet (man against nature), rather than living in peace with it.

Make the planet (our home) first, and man last, or we'll have no home on which man to live.

    * Joyner advanced the "bus ride" down to Jena La - where the conditions there were so unlike Selma Al that they were able to do a group "Electric Slide". These so called Actor-vists did not DIS-Affirm Joyner. Instead they joined in on the Marcia Griffiths son.

    * In the year 2000 as I was a daily listener to Joyer (during my youthful period where my viewpoints where not fully vetted and I needed a daily laugh) I noted that both Joyner and these Actor-vists were on the same page in the elections

    * In the year 2004 - rinse and repeat the above EXCEPT I had stopped listening to Joyner and instead switched to NRP

    * When Joyner did his "No Urban Mandate" boycott against CompUSA and others the Actor-vists applauded. After all - if Joyner could get them to advertise on his show he'd have more money flowing into his wallet. WHAT BETTER REASON to misappropriate the notion of "discrimination against BLACK PEOPLE" than when you stand to personally profit. When is Mellaneous going to respect Capitalism as such? (I'm not mad at Joyner - he used the emotions and frustration of his followers to mobilize for his benefit)

    * In the year 2008 - double ditto the above as Joyner became an unpaid Obama spokesmodel. The Actor-vists were pleased. They didn't mind him pushing the notion that "The mere accomplishment of Obama being elected as president in and of itself was an advancement for the Black race rather than just a notation of the level of tolerance of THIS COUNTRY". (Hint - race and country are not the same damned thing)

I think that you'd have an easier time Thrasher in detailing for me the occasions where the Actorvists disagreed with Joyner?

Someone posted that Obama did not take any PAC money. I know he took money from AIPAC because he's the only fly in a sea of kosher milk. His hiring practices don't leave much to the imagination. Not one of those so-called ivy league assholes are worth the paper the diploma is printed on. Obama also made a mistake hiring Rahm Emmanuel, a person of dual citizenship to be his chief of staff. Rahm's loyalties are not with the US, but with his "motherland." Obama maybe an historical figure, but look how they emasculated him. He can't say no to AIPAC, Goldman Sachs, or the Fed Reserve. Watch who he hires next for the minerals position or the Fed Reserve committee. It won't be someone who looks like you! And Kagan, isn't her family the same Kagans who are multimillionaires leasing and selling the majority of commercial buildings in NYC? Why hasn't the media brought this out?
Obama is too compromised to do a good job. He made a Faustian vow and now the devils are laughing/despising him. It doesn't matter how many of them he hires.

There were some folks that lean to the right who voted for him thinking he was going to lead from the center and they are now disappointed. Barrack Obama seemed to be fulfilling the eyes of the beholder. It appears for many that there was no critical thinking about truly what they might get with a President Obama. FN was one of the bloggers that was skeptical, which all of the current Obama bashers seem to forget. People who had their eyes open hadn't had their expectations dashed, for they knew that the President could be just ordinary. There were some that voted for what they considered the lessor evil and I would say, some of the complainers didn't vote at all.

I know I am accused of being an Obamaholic, because I don't join in the bashing. I don't bash because I didn't have expectations and when all of the Republicans declared war on Obama's policies, I lost any hope that there would be any occasion in which he could make his Presidency transformational. The verbal snipers are out there to disparage any action and the American public is all to eager to believe. As much as John Kennedy was despised in the south, the Russian Missile Crisis didn't bring out a barrage of hateful rhetoric. Today is such a different time.

Thraser, "granny is one of those old stale bloggers in here that has made this site sink in excellence of late"

Now Trasher, that is not true. Granny is in hiding until this Israel mess that Field supports blows over. In addition, CF is on Field's side so she can't in good conscience attack him, either...

But don't worry, as soon as Field manages to weasel out of the Israel mess, which should be interesting, Granny will be back attacking the same folks as Field.

Granny, AB, UTS, ch555x, Trapped in SC, Mack Lyons, Val, Hawaii, MMM, Jody, and AB2 never disagree with Field.

"Most humans have feelings. In case you didn't know it, that is what makes us human."

Speaking as a human, I knew this beforehand. Emotions can be good. However, if we're dealing with problems such as this oil spill, I want rational thinking with a plan over emotional, off the hip reactions that can make problems worse.

"And what is this "we (and Obama)" crap? Obviously you forget Obama is the President of ALL Americans, not Blacks."

Did you see anywhere in my post mentioning race? I knew that before he entered office...WTF?!

  90. I hate to disappoint you Anonymous 10:23, but I do have a life and I am a very busy woman outside of this blog. I don't just sit at the computer 24/7 and throw out insults as you and Thrasher do. Evidently, you and him don't thought. You can't get anything done sitting at the computer 24/7.

BTW, I take frequent breaks from blogging and anyone who has known me for a few years knows that.

  91. BTW, I don't always agree with everything Field says and vice versa. Yet and still I respect his right to his opinion and respect him as a man and another human being. In addition, I respect the fact that this is his blog, and I am only a guess on it. I don't run his blog and he can post whatever he chooses to post, regardless, if I like it or not.

Nevertheless, if I choose to agree with him or don't that is my choice to make and no one on here is qualified to tell me who or what I should agree with. Not you, not Thrasher, Field, or anyone else on here. Do I make myself clear?

Yeah, you are a seasonal blogger alright, I bet those low class AOL chatrooms are missing you.

  93. Granny, leave Trasher alone. He is going away for awhile, and I, for one, will miss him. I just hopes he misses me.

Trasher, let me know where you will be....ah staying. I will be glad to send you a pic.

Hator, all too true. Here's a zinger from Zing:

Criticism is like popcorn. Although the kernels pop in seconds, the smell lingers long past midnight, overpowering all others.

There are those who live to criticize, and criticize to live. Sadly, it's the only life they know.

  98. I still can't understand why some jerk messes with Granny of all people! That is so very wrong. Granny I know you can fight your own battles, but this behavior and vitriol towards you and other posters here is really annoying.

What is interesting is this troll's hatred of perceived Christians and the need to state that it is a pagan. It is also interesting because this person seems to have an issue inflating their own worth as well.

Classic malignant narcissism, not too different from another nasty troll here, as I've pointed out!

When did I insult you? And why are you 'so busy' at your age? Why aren't you spending more time blogging for TRuth like the rest of the elderly?

In the past, you have done so. What's so different now? Did you have to go back to work because of the recession?

No, it is obvious that you disappeared because Field was waving two racist Israeli flags in both hands, and you couldn't bring yourself to speak out against him.

Of course, you said, "I have been busy." Funny how you found time shortly after Field's Israeli posts. That's alright. You aren't the only one of his regulars who disappeared: AB, UTS, Trapped in SC, etc. You are in good regular company.

MR I don't want to annoy you. Who other than Trasher are you talking about? Maybe we can meet at Granny's or some Christian Church and get this thing cleared up?....

If it's ok with Granny, of course.

  102. Wholeheartedly agree with the title of this post. I too believe we are living in times where everything is being separated from everything. It really doesn't matter where one looks, he or she can almost find an incident that troubles the soul. No matter the outlook, the event, the conclusion, whatever.

The ways of the world are in complete and full force right about now.

I don't understand what Spike Lee expects. I mean, if Barack Obama picks up a gun and start shooting people what will it accomplish, besides his death? Rather extreme, I know, but apparently so are the views of aa movie director in asking that Obama become more "angered."

I enjoy watching hot topics of the view on YouTube (good television). But are they aware of a technique that can bring the oil spill to a closure?

You know why everything is being separated from everything which troubles the soul? Because the soul feeds on the Spirit and people like Field and other atheists on this blog contribute to blocking souls from God.

Have you ever read a post by Field that promotes spirituality? Hell no. He has even run ISEEISEE away and she prayed for his ass. Field reminds me of Al Pacino who played in the movie, "The Devil's Advocate".

Even Christians like Granny remain mute about what's going on. That is a sin, Granny and God don't like it!

Why are you so mean? I see what Maria was talking about. You should get to church very soon, you sinner. You are being possessed by the devil, and I don't mean Al Pacino, either.

  105. what is with the american public's need for performance art from their politicians?
the only way to truly deal with the problems like the one we face now with the oil spill is to put in place sensible regulations to provide even minimal safeguards for offshore drilling. but that won't happen because there's nothing that the voting public loves more than a moronic politician telling them that the free market solves all, and that any regulation, no matter how common sense is the death knell of business; all under the guise of supposedly looking out for the average american. they flash their earnest smile, and tell folks that big business really can be trusted to put the common good above their immediate bottom line, and that all we need is better enforcement of the already too harsh regulations that still remain; and the idiots continue to believe them.

the same fools hollering about the wonders of the free market gods, are honestly shocked when lo and behold a company like BP really can't be trusted to police themselves, and we get environmental disasters like this one. then of course it's time to holler for the good for nothing government to come in a clean up the mess, while everyone yells about how they're doing it wrong.

but hell, as long as your leaders put on a good act on the tv and appear to be shocked and appalled by this all too predictable cycle, folks are fine. but when it once again comes time to talk about putting in place those common sense regulations to help try and prevent the kind of disaster that they've just been shocked by, they all say..."no way! regulation is bad!"

the american public isn't interesting in solving the crisis, they are simply interested in having their politicians put on the same tired play over and over again.

personally, i'm waiting for obama to take to the mic and ask all these suddenly concerned americans where their free market god is now? or where the free market's compassion is, while americans look on in horror at the images of environmental destruction?
until that happens, yes obama's response will indeed remain a disappointment to me.

As the investigative reporting is showing -- every day -- BP and Transocean were following the government-mandated rules for drilling in deep water.

You can argue that the rules were flawed. But the companies were following the rules.

False. As usual, it is the government that is unsure of what to do. BP has been working 24/7 to stop the leak since the day the explosion occurred. But government agencies have quibbled over building berms and other barriers to protect the shore from the oil.

Meanwhile, BP is skimming oil from the surface of the Gulf and capturing well over half the oil as it comes out of the broken pipe at the bottom of the Gulf.

In short, BP is making progress while the government wrestles with its own role.

BP has accepted its responsibility and expects to pay for the clean-up. Where's the problem with BP's response?
