"Black adversity"

*
Since we are all still in the oops, A-merry-ca might have a racism problem mode. I thought I would do a cut and paste job from another one of those bloggers of color that you have probably never heard of. It's a brilliant post, and it was written back in April. The brotha might as well have written it yesterday, because it's still that relevant.

"White privilege is the subject where whites are given certain advantages simply because they are white. In a white-dominated society, privileges are not only plentiful, but are also normal. Of course, it's not surprising that many whites are either unaware of their privileges, or go so far as to deny that they even have privileges by playing the victim role.

However, yesterday, I wondered about the opposite of white privilege and what that's called. Today, I've given it a name. I call it black adversity. They are the challenges and disadvantages that blacks have to struggle with. I wanted to focus on the realities of black life in a white-dominated society. So, I made a list of black adversities.

I want to go on record that the list of adversities are not excuses, nor should it be held as reasons for not trying to understand. They do not describe black life in its entirety, and a few, if not some, are not restricted to just blacks. However, the list shows the harsh realities that blacks face no matter the socioeconomic, political, or religious/spiritual sense or status. Some of these vary depending on the individual, but overall, here's a list of adversities blacks have to struggle with and overcome. Also within the list are things whites must be aware of and overcome which is associated with fear.

1. If I'm in a group of others who look like me, that is a cause for some kind of suspicion.

2. In order to not cause suspicion, I must be in the company of (mostly) whites.

3. If I move, I can be sure I will likely end up in poor neighborhood whether I want to or not.

4. If I move into a white neighborhood, it will be enough to arouse suspicion with my neighbors.

5. When I go shopping, I can be sure I will arouse suspicion and be followed around.

6. I will be sure that when I turn on the TV, I will most likely see others who look like me as ball players, criminals, clowns or overall failures of society.

7. When I turn to the local news on tv or in a newspaper, I can be sure most of the crime reported will have faces of suspects who look like me.

8. I know that my history is celebrated during the shortest month of the year and will likely not be celebrated any other time.

9. I know that most of the history taught is of history of mainly white people.

10. I can be sure that most of the stories I have to read for class are stories written by whites featuring white characters.

11. I can be sure that in order to pass in school I have to learn history and literature of whites by whites.

12. In order for whites to listen to me, I must agree with what they think about me and my people.

13. I can be sure that whites will not listen to me when it comes to race and racism.

14. I can be sure that in order to "make it" in the music industry I must sing or rap about sex, drugs, violence and killing my own people.

15. I can be sure that in order to "make it" in the music industry I must be an R&B, Jazz, rap or hip-hop artist.

16. When I use cash, checks, or credit cards, my skin is enough for suspicion.

17. When children of my race are missing, I know the media will likely not pay too much, if any, attention to them.

18. I know during my lifetime, I will be taught that my race is inferior in some way, shape or form.

19. I can be pretty sure that teachers will likely and severely punish children of my race for small infractions.

20. I can be pretty sure that children of my race will be put down or judged because of their race.

21. I know that the dropout rate for male children of my race is the highest among other races.

22. The way I look contributes to the way I should talk in order to be considered black.

23. I know that making good grades and good manners are signs that I'm "acting white."

24. I can be pretty sure that I'm automatically a representative for my group in the entertainment, political, religious or social area.

25. I know that any bad manners I have is associated with my color.

26. As a male I can be sure that living beyond 30 is a blessing.

27. I know that growing up, I will see poverty, drugs, violence and/or murder at least once.

28. If I grew up middle-class or upper-class, I may be looked upon with negativity by some of my own peers. If I grew up lower-class, I may still be looked upon with negativity by some of my own peers.

29. As a female I can be sure that the standard for beauty in this society is white or light skin.

30. I have a good chance of growing up in a single parent home.

31. I have at least one family member or relative who is either in prison or has been in prison.

32. As a child there's a chance that I will likely be considered "bad" by adults who know me faster than being acknowledged of any positives.

33. If I murder a white person, I can be pretty sure that I will get the death penalty.

34. If I murder a black person, I can be pretty sure that my sentence will be lighter compared to white victims.

35. I can be sure that I will be pulled over by police because of my race.

36. I can be sure that I will either be harassed, abused or even killed by police because of my race.

37. In court, I will likely not get a fair trial.

38. I know that as a male, there's a 1 in 3 chance that I will end up in prison, and losing my right to vote.

39. As a male I must marry within my race or be considered a sellout.

40. As a male I know my number one cause of death is homicide most likely by another male who looks like me.

41. I know a new television series will have main characters that will not look like me.

42. I know that negative stereotypes about my people will continue despite a high number of those who do not fit those stereotypes. In other words I will be judged by the actions of a few.

43. I know that my experiences with racism mean little or nothing.

44. I know that I will be a scapegoat for almost anything and everything wrong with this society.

45. I know that there will be movies featuring white people saving my people.

46. I know that my history prior to slavery is hardly discussed or brought up in classrooms. We were taught that we came from slaves and nothing else.

47. I can be sure I will likely not get the job or career I want based upon my race.

48. I know that all of my people are judged for the actions of one or a few of my people.

49. I have to live with the fact that my true culture, language, history are stripped away, and the proof I have to live with is in my name.

50. I am often told that something is wrong with me and not with the society I live in. "

"Black adversity" huh?

So let's talk. Is the post relevant? Or is the brother just another student from the racism chasing school that teaches "victimology"?

  2. The list, overall, is quite good; however, there is allot of "If I'm a male," not nearly enough "If I'm a female," and absolutely no "If I'm a gay male/female."

This is a brilliant response to McIntosh's "White and Male Privileges." She wrote these because she says white people can recognize there are people who are disadvantaged but do not or cannot see the relevant advantages that result. This is a list of the disadvantages that pair up with white unearned advantages. Really insightful and meaningful. When McIntosh is used in my class, resistance to the fact of racism ceases. Thanks so much.

I was thinking the same thing. That's why I didn't even bother to comment earlier.

Its interesting how most black males are experts at identify their oppressors and the privileges those groups have over them, but yet some of these very black men either lack the sight or refuse to acknowledge the privileges and oppression they too readily bestow on black females and sometimes others.

  8. Yes, it's all true but at some point we have to transcend the victim identification and get on with the business of living. Acknowledge the truth and then either act to make it better or accept that you do not want to be bothered and just focus on gettin yours.

  9. White privilege is always going to be the camel in the tent, ain't it? Nobody thinks they have it better at someone else's expense. True story, end of subject. It's not, of course, but what we lack is an effective way of making meaningful contribution in light of it all.

I don't think anyone in the conversation here has the answer, but to our credit, we're all still asking the question. That's about as much common ground as I can come up with on a short notice.

I look for ways to be meaningful in my interactions with all people, Black and White, and I cannot help but notice that I have many distinct advantages.

So what? We all do what we can. I hope.

    13. I can be sure that whites will not listen to me when it comes to race and racism.

I agree with many, but not all, of Will Caper's points. However, if bullet point 13 is correct, then why spend the time enumerating the remaining 47? The choir has already heard this song before.

  13. This list to me is the list of a victim. A list that says that you can't control your circumstances. A list that says that what the white man thinks and does have more power over me than what I think and do. It says that genius and ability are the sole province of other people and that somehow the black man doesn't have these qualities are can't use them to better his condition or exert control over his circumstances. I'm sorry, I can't go with it because I can't accept the premise.

There's a difference between being victimized and remaining a victim.
Sometimes you can't prevent the former, but you never have to accept the latter.

If we believe we're equal in intellect and ability, then the discussion is really about what WE can do to address our own conditions. If we don't believe that, than the cry is "woe is me" and what someone "did" or is "doing" to me. I'm sorry, I can't go there.

I'm a very proud black man and I'm not about to let anything "oppress me", so as a result I'm not "oppressed"

  14. @Well

    My thoughts too.

  15. This list speaks to the problem of some white people, especially poor or working class, refusing to see the unearned privilege they enjoy. Part of the problem is that when times are hard, it's difficult to see yourself as privileged if you're feeling like a failure.

But turn it around like this, and it's much easier to demonstrate to reluctant whites that while they might not feel privileged, for whatever reason, they can't as easily claim that they don't avoid the adversity.

This is a useful teaching tool, field, and I'll use it in my classroom. Thank you.

This brother is spot on. Too bad whites will invoke Adversity #13 and simply ignore what he has to say. Because not only doesn't it fit their viewpoint on race, but it also saddles the responsibility for historically dysfunctional race relations squarely on their shoulders. No one likes carrying around blame or feeling responsible for something they felt happened eons ago.

Apparently blacks are supposed to completely forgive whites for their mistreatment and completely forget such ever happened. All the while whites continue to quietly assign and enforce second-class "less-than" status, deliberately and subconciously. Kinda hard to forget over two centuries of dehumanization when whites have to conciously NOT see you as less-than-human.

And I see some blacks are dismissing the list as "victimology on display". You may not be "oppressed" (This is for you, Greg L.), but you are disadvantaged in the way that others initially see you and others like you. And they largely don't give a good fuck if YOU think you're being oppressed.

"Its interesting how most black males are experts at identify their oppressors and the privileges those groups have over them, but yet some of these very black men either lack the sight or refuse to acknowledge the privileges and oppression they too readily bestow on black females and sometimes others."

It's a problem shared with practically any male within any ethnic group. I'd call it "sexism", but given this is treading into WAOD turf, I'm leary as hell about the response I'd get from others.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Anonymous2:01 AM

Another problem is how whites just can't grasp how ridiculous it sounds to assume that centuries of mistreatment can be forgiven and forgotten all because a black man managed to finally ascend to the ultimate position of power in American politics, a position that was until recently only frequented by white men.

Maybe the problem is that some whites will look for ANY excuse to back themselves out of the racial debate and toss the whole deal in the attic, never to be visited again.

The whole concept of white privilege can only be dismantled by attacking and soundly defeating the subconcious "White is Right" meme that's quietly promoted in society and subconciously utilized by whites themselves. Killing Whiteness as a Distinction will go a long way to leveling the playing field, as there's no longer anyone thinking their better than another group solely on their ethnic makeup.

Either that, you'll have to wait until the white population finally becomes not only a population minority, but also an economic and social minority as well. As in "Hollywood drops the 'White is Right' meme because it not only has to cater to Latino interests, but it's also being bought up by Latino and other international entities, with said groups controlling the creative, productive and financial outputs".

    @ FN:

Face it - being Black in America is a double edged sword...and you have to learn to weild it.

You can either fall victim to the mentality that being Black in America is going to cause you trouble...

    Or...

You can accept that your Blackness speaks VOLUMES and let it speak for you, not aginst you.

Personally, I would not trade my Blackness or my Black experience in America for all the whiteness Sweden has to offer ;)

Truly, WE are the salt that flavors this earth...and though there are whites who think their skin color gives them certain advantages...

I know that being Black gives me advantages as well...

I think we can come up with a list of advantages to being Black. Let me start....

    1. We are the most creative people America has ever had.(I love jazz, hip hop, some Blues and neo-soul)

    2. Blacks built the very country (buildings) we call America.

    3. Our ancestry was called on to create government in America (Philly still have those informational stands by the Liberty Bell?)

    4. We dominate every sport we enter into.(I am now a "Heat" fan :)

    5. We have our own national language (Ebonics) and some words are widely used around the world...(sup homeboy?)

    6. Never will you find a more giving and forgiving people than the Black people in America.(we take in every stray cat, dog and lost or thrown out white person :)

    7. We are the most fashionable people in America and others look to us for the latest trends.

    8. After 266 years of slavery and another 100 years of Jim Crow...we are still a force to be reckoned with ;)

    9. Whites fear us, hate us, and love us and want to be like us (bigger butts, lips, dreadlocks, tans, etc.)

    10. We remain relevant to the survival of this country.

But then...I see the glass as alomst full...:)

    Peace.

  21. "[H]ere's a list of adversities blacks have to struggle with and overcome."

As some have acknowledged, the list is incomplete. It's not exhaustive and I don't think it was intended to be.

And although black women face some racial issues unique to them, and the double whammy of sexism to boot, I can understand their feeling that the list has a black male bias.

But I think I can safely say: Blacks, both men and women, often find that their color can be seen as an impasse (It doesn't have to be.), as they seek to carve out for themselves a piece of the American dream.

That's the given. And I think that Will Capers sought to enumerate those obstacles, those givens, that many blacks can encounter if they live in the United States, and throw their lot in with others vying for a spot on the American Team.

The unfortunate thing about this Team, management, as well as other Team hopefuls, want to convince us that there are only a few openings for certain players, regardless of their qualifications, and expertise, and only a few slots for blacks in particular--and once the black quota is filled, we need no longer apply.

Yet, when we look at the number of blacks in our ranks who still wish to play for the home team, Team America, we understand they face two realities:

One, the competition is stiff from among those within our own ranks, and from among those outside our ranks.

And, two, even if we make the Team, we'll still have to work our butts off to prove our worthiness as players, so not to forfeit our spot to others who would like nothing more than see us fail.

Still, faced with those two realities, all is not lost. For one, we can start our own Negro League and call it Team Black America, creating a number of new openings that didn't exist before, or we can continue to try out, and compete for the diminishing spots on Team America, in hopes that management will see our worth and hire us, or we can settle for lesser positions on the Team--water boy, janitor, groundskeeper, uniform handler, or we can work in the stadium as fast-food cooks, and hawkers of sports paraphernalia--in short, Team Support positions.

Having been rebuffed so many times, some potential black players, many who had star quality, and great promise, gave up their quest to play on Team America.

Others, seeing how their black brothers fared, simply chose not to try out at all.

While yet others, seeing an opportunity and a need, chose to soften the blow of those who were rejected by Team America by hawking the pain panacea, the discouragement panacea, the depression panacea, the hopelessness panacea, and, in the process, getting their piece of the American dream on the ubiquitous suffering and misery of others.

Now, when a brother comes along, one Greg L, and tell us that we can still play on Team America, and can do so on our own terms; that, yes, there are obstacles we'll have to face, both from management and fellow players, but the obstacles don't have to define us, they don't have to become who we are, simply because they are--then I suggest we listen.

  22. In this upside down world in which we're currently living, where blacks, the historical recipients of white racism are now the racists, where blacks are now seen as having advantages not accorded to whites, simply because of our color, or because of supposed white guilt, we finally have (or so they tell us), something equal to, or akin to, what whites have long enjoyed--a privilege of a sort, which I call "Black Privilege."

While we acknowledge the existence of "Black Adversities," we must, too, acknowledge that in recent years, a new phenomenon has sprung up to take its place, to supplant it in the minds of certain whites, those whites who would have other whites believe that blacks aren't entitled to certain privileges, benefits, or considerations--as a result of past or current racial roadblocks to black progress--but are now, in fact, more privileged than many whites.

  23. La~Audio and Well, wasn't he speaking more of his own personal experiences? For instance, if you had such a list, I am guessing it would it would take on a more female centric tone.

"But I think I can safely say: Blacks, both men and women, often find that their color can be seen as an impasse (It doesn't have to be.), as they seek to carve out for themselves a piece of the American dream."

Good point, BD, and it speaks to what Greg L said. Which, by the way, I loved. It had a field Negro flavor to it. Taking ownership of your situation and making the best of it.

But let's look at what the blogger wrote in the context of what is going on in A-merry-ca. Everyone is crying for this teachable moment and conversation on race, isn't understanding how people like this blogger feel important to get the conversation started?

"Yes, it's all true but at some point we have to transcend the victim identification and get on with the business of living. Acknowledge the truth and then either act to make it better or accept that you do not want to be bothered and just focus on getting yours."

What Algie said above is the opposite view. But maybe the blogger already has his. And maybe, just maybe, he is living.
Could it be that he just wants A-merry-ca to all get along?

Yes! You've said this much more articulately than I ever could BD and this is precisely my argument. This was the argument of Garvey, Malcolm, Madam CJ Walker, Alonzo Herndon and others. We need to create our own team so we're not constantly begging someone else for a "support position". Even if our ultimate goal was redress of the wrongs that were done, developing and controlling the economics and politics of our communities strengthens our hand.

I just ultimately believe in the genius and ability of our people just as I believe in my own. That makes us equal even if the conditions we're under are not. It really doesn't matter how someone else "sees" me. It matters more how I see myself for ultimately others will have to deal with me on that basis. Hence, my "reality" becomes his as well.

Okay, this really is just Peggy McIntosh's White Priv. work just reworded. It' not new, so theoretically, the brother just borrowed it and looking for cred. But I won't go there.

I don't think this teaches victimology, but can be used as a source of empowerment. BUT folks like UTS don't believe this type of stuff exists.

  27. I think this list and other similar lists are extremely valuable, even if they do serve as troll bait wherever they are posted. They open up the conversation and get the dialogue stirring, and even for those who disagree strongly with individual items on the lists or with the premise of a particular list, they make others aware of a group's in-group perceptions of how others see and treat them.

I think this is one of the better lists I've seen, though I have to agree with the commenter above who stated that there were too few "if a female" and too many "if a male" items, on balance.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Normalcy.

Isn't that the crux of the matter? Whiteness is normal, and everything else not.

Someone captured an oblique view of white privilege once-- that white supremacy will be dead when a successful black person can be as utterly, unremarkably mediocre as the average successful white.

    ReplyDelete
  29. "La~Audio and Well, wasn't he speaking more of his own personal experiences? For instance, if you had such a list, I am guessing it would it would take on a more female centric tone."

Field, I can almost assure you that the average black woman making such a list would have highlighted more of the injustices against her black "brothers" than she would have presented those on her behalf. And yet black females have both external and internal prejudices, oppressions and fears to deal with, but we were taught well to sacrifice ourselves for others, particularly black males.

Still though, he threw black women a bone at #29, but he failed to state how those standards of beauty is also being practiced internal among blacks and by many black men. And yet he had no problems implicating other black people at number #39, we all know white people could care less who's being a "sell out". I'm not knocking his list, I'm just stating my personal observations and comparisons.

Mack, maybe you might find comfort in knowing that "What About The Blog Host" doesn't like me either. All black women do not read the same blogs, no share the same thinking process.

"2. Blacks built the very country (buildings) we call America."

*Yawn* False exaggerations based in bitterness. Blacks contributed as a minority population. Secondly, the U.S. isn't its buildings, even poor countries have lots of buildings. The fact that you liken a country to its buildings shows the breath of your knowledge (or lackthere of).

"3. Our ancestry was called on to create government in America (Philly still have those informational stands by the Liberty Bell?)"

To the extent that civil rights laws were passed.

The Liberty Bell was originally intended simply as sign of independence from the British. In the 19th century, after the constitution and independent government had been established, it was THEN adopted by abolitionists.

"7. We are the most fashionable people in America and others look to us for the latest trends."

Young black males in the hip hop world are wearing skinny jeans, baseball hats, and skater shoes currently. Didn't start with blacks.

"9. Whites fear us, hate us, and love us and want to be like us (bigger butts, lips, dreadlocks, tans, etc.)"

    1. Butt implants among whites - smaller than 1% (personally never met anyone, heard about black girls without booties getting them to appeal to black men, white men care less about bubble butts)

    2. Lip implants - smaller than 1% (maybe met one person in my life who has them but I don't know for sure, heard about blacks getting lip reductions as well).

    3. Dreadlocks -- less than 1% (there were a few white kids in the 1990s -- it was rare to see them then, its very rare now). Have heard of black women wearing weaves, but I guess that's different.

    4. Tanning occurs naturally in most cases. Tanned white people look like tanned white people, not blacks. If you want to liken them to another race it would be arabs -- especially considering facial features. African decendants are still the darkest. The light brown ones are mixed, barring a 1 in a million mutation. It's just self-congratulation from insecure people that need to believe others want to look like them.

Notice you very rarely hear whites or others talking about how others want to look like them. It's usually defeated, emotionally destitute people.

I don't have time to address the others. But it's important to acknowledge one of the reasons for enduring racism and racial tension, is insecure individuals like agape who live on exaggerations and race-baiting.

  32. No matter how you perceive your reality, it doesn't prevent you from walking into that glass picture window

I believe that depends upon exactly where the glass picture window sits and your own position are relative to it. One's position can increase the likelihood of which reality prevails--yours or the other guy's. So, yes if the window sits in the other guy's house, it can present a obstruction. Of course, if you own your own house and set the rules for that house, then it's an entirely different matter.

Personally, I'm not trying to get in the other guy's "house". I've been in his house and didn't like the house nor the fact that the window was there to begin with. I prefer to have my own house, yard, window and whatever else.

Here's what I think, Hathor: Our biggest problem here is our position. If we're in a position where our success or the ability to better our conditions is wholly contingent on someone else changing his behavior, removing windows and etc, then our forward progress is held hostage and we're in the position of someone else having to "approve" this or that. So if white folks don't change, we can't move forward.

I can never accept that as to my way of thinking, that's just way too much power to concede.

You are assuming that picture window is in a house.

Usually what happens is that you turn around and bump into that window; totally in an unexpected place.

There some things that are not in our control, however one might want it. It has to be recognized or in certain instances can wreck our psychic. Some things do have to change out side of yourself, for you to be free.

My goals may be different from yours. The things I want, the type of work I do, may be quite different. I never wanted to live in an insular environment, I wanted to explore and to see all of the horizon, because I felt equal to any white person on this planet. When getting ready to walk out that door, I didn't run into a door that opened, but into a fixed window. Fortunately for me it didn't shatter.

I didn't think it necessary to be a super negro and jump unusually high hoops to attain my goals. I wanted to have the freedom to be average.

  49. You are assuming that picture window is in a house. Usually what happens is that you turn around and bump into that window; totally in an unexpected place. There some things that are not in our control, however one might want it.

Hathor, I don't mean to suggest that all is within anyone's control and that applies to everyone. To be sure, someone like a racist police officer isn't going to bother making a distinction between me and someone else, so no, I don't necessarily control that. But on the other hand, there are a great many things I do control and if I know there's a possibility that someone is going to treat me unfairly, then I simply control what I can to the maximum extent possible to mitigate their ability to do so. There are many black folks who did this. Madam Walker told a story one time about how she built the Walker Theater mainly because of an insulting movie clerk charging black folks more than whites. Black Wall Street of Oklahoma was built to provide services that the whites wouldn't. Alonzo Herndon built Atlanta Life to insure black folks when whites wouldn't. We only need to hear the great Frederick Douglass on this:

"The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those they oppress. Find out what a people will willingly allow and you'll find the exact measure on injustice imposed upon them."

That just rings in m my head too much I suppose as I really believe it and it captures, for me, the essence of the idea of black freedom. I just don't do "endure" very well at all, so whatever I can do limit the tyrant is what I'm going to be doing. So my position is if we have "endure", it only need be for a season-a season of the shortest duration possible.

My goals may be different from yours. The things I want, the type of work I do, may be quite different. I never wanted to live in an insular environment, I wanted to explore and to see all of the horizon, because I felt equal to any white person on this planet....I didn't think it necessary to be a super negro and jump unusually high hoops to attain my goals. I wanted to have the freedom to be average.

I think there's room for that and please understand, that I'm not suggesting that you or anyone else should do anything different. But let me also say that my life is not necessarily insular or isolated. I'm fully engaged where I need to be engaged, it's just that I have more control over the terms of the engagement so to speak.

For me, racism was mainly encountered in the workplace when I worked in corporate America. A job change wouldn't have resolved the issue for me as all that meant in my mind was that I'd be trading one "plantation" for another. So, I decided to take my skills and talents and create my own business and my stress level about these sorts of things dropped dramatically. (Of course, that was replaced by worrying about other stuff.) For me, the greatest stress from racism came from the control of my personal economics and the feeling that I had to put up with a bunch of nonsense because my livelihood depended on it. I just couldn't and wouldn't accept that. I'd would have been in an early grave had I endured the "tyrant". He had to be thrown off.

All I refer to is what works for me and that perhaps we all might have more freedom psychically and otherwise if more of us pursued a strategic path for personal and collective power as that's what it's going to take to address our issues or even to seek redress if that's a goal. The most direct route is true control over the economics and the politics of our community. Every initiative should bump up against this litmus test and if it doesn't pass it, it should not be pursued. I believe that sort of litmus test alone changes the conversations we have.

    G

OJ agrees, as does almost every black and hispanic defendant whose cases were decided by "Bronx Juries."

    6. I will be sure that when I turn on the TV, I will most likely see others who look like me as ball players, criminals, clowns or overall failures of society.

Don't forget the newscaster, who, these days, is likely to be non-white.

Meanwhile, including ball players, criminals, clowns and failures in the same list suggests the writer believes ball players, criminals, clowns and failures are equivalent -- in a bad way.

Meanwhile, the writer, as is always the case when blacks are repeating this sad lament, has no idea what he's claiming.

With respect to national news, it's unlikely more than an entire minute passes without the image of Obama appearing in a TV transmission somewhere in the country. And, now Shirley Sherrod is getting her overdose of media attention. Eric Holder is never far from the news.

Meanwhile, when it comes to bad behavior in NY City, it is an established FACT that well over 90% of violent crime is committed by blacks and hispanics.

And lastly, if the claims that whites in America are racist and enjoy some socially conferred privilege, then the clearest proof for the claim would exist in the form of a black nation in Africa where blacks live in, and operate, a complex economy where prosperity is growing.

As a result of oil wealth, that nation should be Nigeria. But Nigeria is a sewer.

We live in a tiered society, where each tier sets many of its own rules for living. As the writer of the list mentioned, when black students work for good grades, they are ridiculed by other blacks for "acting white."

As long as sentiments like that are part of the black tier of US society, blacks will have to continue denying their acceptance of self-destruction.

Geez. Maybe the writer is unaware of the fact that reading and writing are relatively new skills among blacks.

Homer wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey a long time ago. Thucydides wrote the History of the Pelponnesian War hundreds of years before the birth of Christ. Then there was the Bible itself.

For longer than the last two millennia writers in every language created some lasting work.

Unfortunately, in Africa there was no written language until whites arrived. By that time some of the world's greatest literature had been written. More has been written every year since, but almost none of it has come from black writers.

Today, the best black writers are women. There's no contemporary Ralph Ellison.

Do whites object to Maya Anjelou or Toni Morrison due to their race? No.

*Yawn* False exaggerations based in bitterness. Blacks contributed as a minority population. Secondly, the U.S. isn't its buildings, even poor countries have lots of buildings. The fact that you liken a country to its buildings shows the breath of your knowledge (or lackthere of).

You are the only person "liken a country to it buildings" which tell me you are talking out of your ass.

After 300 years of slavery and 100 years of Jim Crow (damn near slavery) there is no doubt the profits gained from free labor from slaves and near free labor after slavery (plus interest) contributed to a great part of the foundation of wealth this country boast about today. Not only did free labor help build this country (including buildings) but also paid for the educations of many generation of white folks.

  67. @Hator: "Some things do have to change out side of yourself, for you to be free.

Hator, it sure seems that way, doesn't it?

I used to think that that was so, but at some point in my life I did a reappraisal, I took a closer look at freedom, happiness and a host of other mental states, yes, mental states, for that's what in reality freedom and happiness are, when we strip away the vesture in which they're seemingly clothed, and seemingly parading--our so-called outward conditions, situations, and circumstances--which appear as implacable as the Rock of Gibraltar.

After years of beating my head against that other rock, American racism--a rock which I'm sure you, too, are familiar, as we all are in varying degrees--I reasoned that, if I were to be free, if I were to be happy, I had to simply be that without regard to what was going on around me, because I couldn't always control that, but what I could control, what I was at choice about, was how I chose to experience what was going on around me.

Hator, I can almost hear you say, about now, that's self-deception, that if you're bound hands and feet, you're not free, if you're prevented from taking a road, any road, you're restricted, your life choices have been compromised, subjecting you possibly to a bleak future.

And you'd be right, if I ignored my situations, my conditions, and my circumstances--insisting that my hands and feet aren't manacled, when they are, that my life choices aren't compromised and my future bleak, when, in fact, they may be.

For the moment, if that's my lot, I'm constrained to concede that that is my current reality.

Let me tell you about another reality: I've experienced pain in my stomach so excruciating that I could barely walk, it was as though a fire had been lit inside, and was threatening to consume me from the inside out.

Despite the pain, I made a conscious decision not to suffer. I consciously decided to experience the pain without heaping the coals of a judgment about it upon the fire raging inside.

You see, although they looked the same, they were, in fact, two separate things, not one and the same--the pain, and the suffering.

    ***More***

    ReplyDelete
  68. Here's what I could have said to transform the pain into suffering: "Damn, this is the worse pain I've ever felt;" or "This is killing me;" or "How long am I going to have to bear this. It's intolerable."

In a similar fashion, I can choose to moderate any and all outward happenings, occurrences, and events, by simply seeing them for what they are (pain), and then choosing how I'll react to that pain. Will I choose to suffer, or will I choose to just experience the pain without the usual accompanying misery that attends these things?

Hence, I can choose happiness, and freedom, or any other state of mind I elect to experience, in the face of untoward, and unhappy circumstances, situations, and conditions.

These states of mind are really states of being. And when it comes to a state of being, we're always in charge, we're always at choice.

This discussion is long, by necessity, but it would be incomplete if I neglected to offer a plan and methodology for moving ahead when outward circumstances, "walking into that glass picture window," leave a severe gash, or a red bruise, or a swelling just above your eyes, and just below your hairline.

First, know that you have the power to experience, shape, anyway you choose, any untoward situation or circumstance.

I've discussed that at length. Second, know that no outward condition is implacable, that with enough time, and enough of the "right stuff," bringing the right forces to bear (persistence, belief in one's self, belief in the ultimate goodness of the universe, belief that no matter the obstacle, there's a way around it, through it, over it, or under it), that any external barrier can be brought low--the Rock of Gibraltar, or the Rock of Racism.

My life is a living testament to that knowing, and to that "known." Even some slaves found freedom by following the North Star.

Trust me, we can all find and follow that North Star. Its position is essentially fixed, a reliable, and dependable guide. It's always there for those who won't accept defeat, discouragement, or setbacks.

You see, that Pole Star resides, not in the night skies, but within us.

    ReplyDelete
  69. @Greg L: "I just ultimately believe in the genius and ability of our people just as I believe in my own. That makes us equal even if the conditions we're under are not. It really doesn't matter how someone else 'sees' me. It matters more how I see myself for ultimately others will have to deal with me on that basis. Hence, my 'reality' becomes his as well."

Greg L, the eloquence of this statement, and the truth that dwells within, deserve a repeating, and a revisiting, lest the golden nugget it contains is passed over, hidden, possibly, within the landscape of other competing ideas.

no_slappz, such a statement shows you know nothing of the history of colonialism and client states. The British ruled Nigeria until the early 60's and ensured that a dependent ruling class would live on.

Oh. So an independent nation with extraordinary resource wealth that is sufficient to finance any future the people of Nigeria choose is incapable of anything more than slipping into a cesspool.

Your contempt for the capacities of blacks to form functioning nations is overwhelming, however, your belief that independent blacks are incapable of forming a successful nation is well founded.

Meanwhile, Singapore was also a British colony that became an independent nation around 1965. It went from asian backwater to one of the world's most prosperous nations in 45 years.

If the Singaporeans can do it, why not the Nigerians?

I know. You got yourself a whole book of excuses written by Frantz Fanon.

Germany and Japan were destroyed in WWII. The US oversaw their reconstruction and the establishment of their new governments. Things worked out rather well, don't you think?

We can say the same for South Korea.

But in Africa, each country seems to fall into its own civil war, and the wars seem to last for decades. But there's little evidence things improve after the fighting and slaughter end.

Go read the classic, Franz Fanon's 'Wretched of the Earth'.

    Nah. He's boring.

    ReplyDelete
  80. kathy,

You really should look into the history of reading and writing and when the two arrived in the black world.

Do you understand there's no written history of Africa prior to the arrival of whites because no one in sub-Sahara Africa knew how to write and record events?

    ReplyDelete

    Black Dispora,

I'm a great admirer of those who command the written word mainly because words are powerful things that stand long after the author has gone on. Words have the power to move people by lifting the veil and compelling them to action. Over the years, I've probably spent quite a bit of time reading folks with this gift in hopes of developing my own skills in this regard, but it's clear to me that perhaps some of this reading can be done right here.

I appreciate your praise for what I've had to offer here, but I really can't match the eloquence of the above. To be honest, very few people can. This captures the concept of freedom entirely, actually the entire post does but I couldn't quote it all due to blogger space limitations:-)

    Thanks for sharing.

  83. kathy,

Before the arrival of whites in Africa, no one in sub-Sahara Africa was keeping written records of day-to-day life.

Some pictures, primitive drawings, carvings and folk lore. That was it.

Whites have spent the last 500 years attempting to teach Africans to read and write. But the literacy rate is still abysmally low, and due to the spread of Islam, it will probably go lower as schooling is withheld from women.

  84. Sometimes I can't help but wonder if no_slappz, our resident bigot, doesn't realizes that we live in America and not Africa. Although, what do we can expect from a small-minded person who views life through a narrow set of racist lenses. He always throws up Africa as if that is the measuring stick with which to evaluate American born black people with.

Will someone please tell no_slappz that he does not have to act like he is so knowledgeable or should I say more knowledgeable than even those on here that are experts in certain fields, especially when he doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. Tell him its okay, if he doesn't know what he is talking about to sit back and learn from those black people that he abhors so much their skin color won't rub off on him. Tell him he won't catch the cooties.

Apparently, he does not know that Timbuktoo in Songhai was an intellectual nucleus center where Europeans and other countries flocked to sit under African scholars.

King Askia [a black king] came to power in 1493 in Songhai one year after that mass murderer, liar, and thief Columbus landed in America. While Columbus was over here stealing land and everything not nailed down from the Native Americans, Africans were educating and developing intellectual scholars. King Askia made city-states Gao Walata, Timbuktu and Jenne into intellectual centers and encourages scholarship and literature. Students came from all the world to study law, surgery at the University of Sankore. Sudanese literature was developed and they wrote many books.

no_slappz is lucky today that I'm tired from my trip and still trying to adjust back to Pacific time zone. BTW, Columbus was a European so no_slappz does that mean all white people are liars, murderers, and thieves?

SURPRISE SURPRISE, Once again, N_S is wrong on the facts.

Ancient Egyptians had heiroglyphics, a form of writing. They wrote this on papyrus, one of the earliest forms of paper.

The kingdom of MALI back in the 12th and 13th centuries had one of the largerst Islamic Universities IN THE WORLD. Archeologisits in that country now work hard to keep these books in good condition.

Around the 12th century, the University of Timbuktu had an attendance of 25, 000 students in a city which had a population of 100, 000 people. The students came from all corners of the African continent in search of excellence in knowledge and trade. On graduation day, students were given Turbans. The turban symbolizes Divine light, wisdom, knowledge and excellent moral conduct.

The Ge'ez script was developed in the horn of africa for writing the Ge'ez language. The earliest form of this was a ethio-semitic script that dates back to the 9th CENTURY BEFORE CHRIST. This evolved into several variants and by the first century AD the old Ge'ez alphabet had arisen.

Any more statements you like to make that I can prove wrong?

Also, in the Quran it states that the pursuit of knowledge is a virtue for both men and women, so your expected islamophobic statement is also wrong.

Again, you show what you do not know.

Ancient Egyptians had heiroglyphics, a form of writing. They wrote this on papyrus, one of the earliest forms of paper.

To repeat -- reading and writing were unknown in sub-Sahara Africa until whites arrived. Egypt -- since you seem geographically challenged -- is not a sub-Saharan country or region.

The kingdom of MALI back in the 12th and 13th centuries had one of the largerst Islamic Universities IN THE WORLD.

Yes, muslim invaders did bring the study of the Koran and the Arabic language to Mali.

Let's consider modern Mali. The median age is 16. It is a nation of children. Life expectancy is 52. That's worse than bad. Death from water-borne diseases is standard.

Worse, 90% of the population is muslim. That's the outcome of the muslim invation in the 12th and 13th centuries that you seem to praise.

Archeologisits in that country now work hard to keep these books in good condition.

What books? Those must be the books too fragile to be read. Meanwhile, blacks in Mali when the muslims arrived could not read or write. After muslims arrived, the few who were allowed to learn to read and write did so by memorizing the Koran.

Meanwhile, today, the official state language of Mali is French. Not that it matters, the average Mali citizen goes to school for 7 years, and you know those kids learn very little during that time.

Even today, only about 45% of the population is considered literate -- able to read and write. Barely.

Obviously before the French colonized the country, almost no one in Mali except the muslim invaders knew how to read and write.

Around the 12th century, the University of Timbuktu had an attendance of 25, 000 students in a city which had a population of 100, 000 people. The students came from all corners of the African continent in search of excellence in knowledge and trade.

The preceding is pure fantasy. A small number of people studied in Timbuktu, and, as we can see, they got out while the gettin' was good.

On graduation day, students were given Turbans. The turban symbolizes Divine light, wisdom, knowledge and excellent moral conduct.

Nonsense. It expresses the dominance of Islam, which is one of the world's most powerful forces of darkness and backwardness.

As if it matters that a handful of people developed some chicken scratch. Around the African continent hundreds of spoken languages developed. But writing, and hence, reading, never caught on. That's how it is today -- illiteracy reigns.

Also, in the Quran it states that the pursuit of knowledge is a virtue for both men and women, so your expected islamophobic statement is also wrong.

Yeah, Islam believes in gender equality. That's why women are kept out of school in muslim countries, why they are forced to wear burkas, why it is legal for a husband to murder his wife, and why female genital mutilation is a standard practice.

Your problem is not knowing how to read the Koran. It does not say what you seem to think. And muslims accept the Koran as an authority higher than our Constitution, which means they live according to its terms, even when they live here.

Several people have come to Field's blog in order to give us the 411 on No_Sacz. Apparently he's an abject failure who isn't even liked among his own community -- even his parents. How sad. Think how pathetic you have to be when the only thing you can do to face yourself in the morning is to put down an entire race of people on a daily basis.

Coffee and Cigs - you are arguing with a person (and I use that term lightly) who seriously doesn't believe that the English system of government is a constitutional monarchy. He's hopeless. Not only is he an embarrassment to the white community, he's an insult to humanity. I mean come on, how rational is it for a person who believes that black people are subhuman and incapable of intelligent thought to visit a black blogger's site and argue with black people? Think about it. What's even more pathetic is when he doesn't get any response under No_Sacz -- I mean No_Slappz, he'll post anonymously. However, the "genius" still hasn't figured out a way to disguise his writing style. I say he should get the same amount of attention as Frank Drackman does.

Again you're showing another lapse of critical abilities.

I would not bother to post as "anonymous" or under another screen name. If you think other posters share my writing style, then perhaps they are intentionally copying it. I really don't know.

But I do know that you have repeatedly implied that a democracy -- Great Britain -- which for some pointless reason is identified as a "consitutional monarchy" is the equivalent of a traditional monarchy.

When it comes to governments, you are seriously mis-informed. On that subject, you also do not understand that the UAE is a theocracy. If you doubt this, try organizing a Christian church there. If you try, if you go out into the muslim community seeking converts like Jehovah's Witnesses, you will find yourself in jail.

Muslim countries are the living breathing definition of theocracies, even when they claim they are something else, like "constitutional monarchies."

    ReplyDelete
  120. Anonymous12:39 AM

Field, I have known you for years and, as usual, you are "right on." The saddest part of it all is that most black people are so steeped in ignorance and "self hatred" that they can't even begin to understand the points that you are making in this commentary.
And here we are in the 21st century and black parents are still not teaching their kids a damn thing about black pride, black history, and black beauty. Hell, in the black community weaves are a billion dollar industry, along with blonde hair dye, blue contact lenses, and skin lightening bleaching cremes. And most black men are so damned brainwashed by their mommas and white society that the last thing they're looking at is anything other than a black woman. HELL, black folks are still saying shit like "good hair" and "bad hair." Black folks are so damned stupid that they think that calling themselves niggers is now a "term of endearment." Like a white slave master said years ago, we don't have to be in chains for them to keep us in a have a slave mentality mode.
Black folks continue to be programmed and brainwashed just by the use of subliminal advertisements, negative images and stereotypes. Most continue to accept the "I BELONG IN THE BACK OF THE BUS MENTALITY." And the worst part of it all is that as blacks gradually slip right back into present day slavery, this time around will be even more dangerous than the last time because blacks are walking willingly into their own "gas chambers" of murder, mayhem, and genocide. Today's blacks are among the "walking dead." And they have no one to blame but themselves@!!!!!!

    Laaudiobooks,

Thank you. Black men and racism chasing while they discriminate against Black women based on hue is old.
I have come to the conclusion that it is a waste of time for a discriminated Black woman to fight racism. Simply because she will have to contend with colorism back in the community. Fight for the equal rights of Blacks ( read Black men) and then get walked all over by the same men thereafter. There is very little to gain in that struggle for a Black woman.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Anonymous3:38 PM

"It's a problem shared with practically any male within any ethnic group. I'd call it "sexism", but given this is treading into WAOD turf, I'm leary as hell about the response I'd get from others."

Calling Black female oppression by Black males as mere sexism is the equivalent of calling the Black struggle as simply class warfare.
Black men are the main perpetrators of colorism.

There ought to be a word for the discrimination that is only unique to the Black female which comes from everyone else including the Black male.
So no, don't minimize the Black woman's plight as simple sexism experienced by all other females when those other females enjoy privilages accorded to them by among others, Black males.

Again it is the equivalent of blaming the Black man's plight on simply his lack of economic strength rather than historic and systematic racism.
