You all need to stop sending me links like this. A brother is trying to concentrate on writing his post. Eco Soul, I have mad love for you, and I know the point of your post was sisters getting their work out on, but sometimes a picture can get in the way, if you know what I am "sayin".
Anyway, let me stop before folks start calling me James Vine. James, you are one sick dude.
Anywhooo, tonight I am not going to chase my man racism. He is too easy to catch. Hell, when he starts f#*&^%g with black celebrities without a care in the world, I might as well leave his ass alone. There is nothing I can do from here, so go on with your bad self Big R. It's your world.
I do want to talk about a serious subject, and if we overcome it, we can tell Big R to kiss our collective black asses. Why? Because then it really won't matter what he does; we will already have ours, and thanks to the laws in this great country, there is not a damn thing he will be able to do about it.
The serious problem is education; or a lack of it among young black males. I heard Brian Williams yapping about it on NBC Nightly News, and I already knew there was a problem, but damn! Only forty seven percent of black males are graduating high school in this country. And, in my hometown of Philly- and in places like New York- it's twenty seven percent. Now that is some scary stuff. Oh we talk about it, and we are aware of it, but can we really do anything about it?
I know one thing; the HNIC's that are in charge aren't doing the job. It's one fancy program after another, and none of it is doing any damn good. "No Child Left Behind";"Race To The Top", what's the difference? None of them are working. I suspect that the folks implementing these programs with their fancy Ed.D's and assortment of letters have no clue about motivating young black men to learn. A think tank here, a think tank there, and people trying to score cheap political points at the expense of our children.
Some programs, to be sure, have been working. Urban Prep in Chicago comes to mind. And apparently the charter schools up in Harlem are kicking butt. So, help me out here, why aren't the folks who were instrumental in starting some of these schools not in serious decision making positions in Washington? Whose job is it to find these people and put the brightest and hardest working people together to come up with solutions? One problem, to be sure, is ego. I have been in the room and seen the my degree is better than yours interplay that takes place among folks who are supposed to be about the business of educating. It's depressing. And folks like me who -just want to give a helping hand- throw our hands up and say f*&k it! That's almost where I was, (almost) until I watched Brian Williams yapping about it on Nightly News, as if it was all taking place in some foreign country and not right in his back yard. (Well, not his back yard, but you know what I am saying; it's here in A-merry-ca. )
Education is still the great equalizer, and it's time these youngsters realise it.

ReplyDeleteWare dey daddy at?
`
I'm new here and will just jump in:
ReplyDeleteTexas school boards determining how school text books will be written certainly doesn't help.
However, I'm not sure that it's necessary to have another, new round of "Let's Improve Our Schools Now" (or whatever the national team slogan is) task force report. In fact, I think the feds should just get out of the decision making process and begin to facilitate organic growth of great ideas in all of the schools. Grant money to prime the pumps in all school districts for innovative programs would be one idea.
The real question, though, is how to get the message through to kids who have no reason to believe they have a responsibility to themselves to get an education.
First off, that is a indictment on how sad a lot of us black men are. You know the type. The guys on Maury who jump up and down like they've won a championship upon learning that they are not a child's father.
ReplyDeleteDo we have, as blacks and as Americans, the courage to tell the truth as to why 47% of our black men cant't get high school diplomas? You would think in this day and age, they would see the correlation between education level and unemployment rate.
That we have lost untold numbers of uncultivated minds in the search for "swag" and status aided and abetted by BET, MTV, and the music industry with no regard for the outcomes that come about? That these children, as a lot of us do, have a perception of the world and what it owes them that is far different that the actuality of reality. I think that a lot of the younger folks living now think that there will be a place for you simply because are black. That there will be a job for you, or a check for you, or a record deal, or a hookup or payback extended to you if for no other reason that for the way you look and the way that people who looked like were treated (or are treated still, if you want to be honest).
That children who have a negligible amount of athletic ability have been brainwashed into thinking that they will be the next LeBron or Kobe?
That many of these children simply don't see learning as important or they don't have an intrinsic desire to become educated? Or that the mothers and "fathers" can show up for each football and basketball game, but are simply too busy to be burdened with PTO meetings and parent-teacher conferences?
That its very likely that a 10 year old child may live in a home with a 28 year old mother, a 46 year old grandmother, a 68 year old great-grandmother, and no father?
But I have a serious question. Why do our kids need community centers, after school programs, incentives to go to school, busing across town to learn beside white kids (as if black kids learn through Caucasian osmosis), and all sort of political gimmicks instead of telling our parents to be parents and our kids to learn or get the fuck out of the house?
FN-
ReplyDeleteI notice how you conveniently take digs at black women. AMERICAN women need to get their work out on in much greater numbers. Believe it or not there are more fat white women in america than black ones DESPITE what you see on tv and the media.
Funnier still, is the fact that black men REALLY don't seem to have a problem with fat women. Just look at the white women they covet when they are not millionaire negroes. Truthfully, the problem is BLACK fat women for quite a few black men. Tell the truth and shame the devil FN.
Black women MUST in greater numbers start taking care of themselves FIRST and FOREMOST. On a spiritual, physical, and financial level. More black women/girls must eliminate ALL unhealthy relationships, with folks AND food. As more black women/girls recognize and exercise their dating/mating options, this resolve will work for you.
And while we are on the subject, there are a grip of big bellied fat black men schlepping around acting like they are the business. LOL. Wanna address that fact? Probably not, sensitive lot black males are. The bulk of the "in shape" black males are contributing mightily to the prison business.
Now, as it relates to the post:
Black men, in MUCH larger numbers MUST stop with the nonsense and start PARENTING their children. Both gender children NEED both their mothers AND FATHERS. It is for this reason, God require BOTH in order to CREATE children. Parenting is not simply writing checks (willingly or by court order) and TELEparenting occasionally, if that, either.
God never intended for women to socialize boys, alone, to be men. Nor is it the GOVERNMENT'S responsibility. Seriously, you want folks in Washington to make the descendants of those that were historically punished for seeking literacy and education to have greater appreciation? Really?
It will take the menfolk to stress to their sons that they must chase education, opportunities, and resources as diligently as most black men chase sex. Hello? But first, their fathers will need to BE the example.
I am sure our ancestors weep at the collective squandering of their blood equity and the opportunities it affords us.
Before folks decide to bash BW, quite a few black women have been abandoned by their fathers, raised solely by their mothers, withstood tremendous obstacles, physical violence and sexual abuse to STILL pursue education in greater numbers. Aren't the MEN supposed to stronger than the womenfolk? More black males need to pull their pants up and step up! More black folks need to start telling the truth and hold black men/boys accountable for their choices and behavior. Coddling them is destroying them.
For the hypersensitive males and their loyal female protectors be advised, this comment does NOT address ALL black men, just a large and growing number of them.
"First off, that is a indictment on how sad a lot of us black men are. You know the type. The guys on Maury who jump up and down like they've won a championship upon learning that they are not a child's father."
ReplyDeleteWho is Maury?
"It will take the menfolk to stress to their sons that they must chase education, opportunities, and resources as diligently as most black men chase sex."
ReplyDeleteThat was awesome.
Shit, if we did that we would have 10 black presidents by now.
"I notice how you conveniently take digs at black women. AMERICAN women need to get their work out on in much greater numbers. Believe it or not there are more fat white women in america than black ones DESPITE what you see on tv and the media."
ReplyDeleteNot true. In Oakland all you see are big fat bw and I hardly see any big fat sloppy ww. It's the same in Atlanta, too.
Anon 10:37 why don't you stop being a coward when you want to blast away and come out with your regular id?
ReplyDelete"Shit, if we did that we would have 10 black presidents by now."
ReplyDeleteWell, that is not going to happen. Blacks are addicted to tv shows like Jerry Springer and Maury and Judge Judy. Those shows do nothing for the mind. No question about it, we are the least educated group in America. Btw, that makes us the dumbest race.
Pssst...I will tell you a secret:
ReplyDeleteThe educational level or lack thereof is directly related to the soaring OOW rates in the black community.
BOTH BM and BW must do their part to apply a stigma and fix that hemorraghing (sp) mess.
And yes, I have noticed that quite a few black men give their women children the afterthought most afford their bowel movements. NONE whatsoever.
"Anon 10:37 why don't you stop being a coward when you want to blast away and come out with your regular id?"
ReplyDeleteI merely asked an honest question, "who was Maury?" And that is blasting?
"And yes, I have noticed that quite a few black men give their women children the afterthought most afford their bowel movements. NONE whatsoever."
ReplyDeletePlease explain yourself. I don't quite understand what you are talking about.
"Not true. In Oakland all you see are big fat bw and I hardly see any big fat sloppy ww. It's the same in Atlanta, too."
ReplyDeleteSo...I am going to invite you to put on your thinking cap and focus. I feel confident that you will be able to figure out why in Oakland and Atlanta you may see more black folks...period.
LOL!
Really?
Dear Field, it's taking a long time for approval in previous threads. Sometimes it been hours.....What gives?
ReplyDeleteGod never intended for women to socialize boys, alone, to be men. Nor is it the GOVERNMENT'S responsibility.
ReplyDeleteFor millennia the socialization of boys to men was the conscription; the braves, the warrior class, the initiation ceremonies.
A presumably black male anony said... "Not true. In Oakland all you see are big fat bw and I hardly see any big fat sloppy ww. It's the same in Atlanta, too."
ReplyDeleteSo I guess that means Oakland and Atlanta completes the entire United States of America. More proof for the main topic of this post...
To the first Anony 10:37 pm, Bravo!
"So...I am going to invite you to put on your thinking cap and focus. I feel confident that you will be able to figure out why in Oakland and Atlanta you may see more black folks...period."
ReplyDeleteNo I don't see more Blacks than Whites. In fact, it's just the opposite for me. But maybe you do. You see, it depends on where you live. Either way, there are still a lot more fat bw than ww. You are in profound denial.
Even Michelle Obama will tell you that.
"And yes, I have noticed that quite a few black men give their women children the afterthought most afford their bowel movements. NONE whatsoever."
ReplyDeletePlease explain yourself. I don't quite understand what you are talking about."
Let me say it a different way:
Quite a few black men don't give the women they impregnate and the children that result ANY thought after they have satisfied the impulse.
Just as it is the responsibility of women to not become impregnated by men that did not esteem them enough to marry them. It is also the responsibility of men to not impregnate women they would not marry.
The time to determine whether this woman is wife material, vindicative, malicious, or any of the many other excuses I have heard for why folks are not taking care of their children; is BEFORE she becomes pregnant. AFTERWARDS, you have already made your bed.
Be clear, I teach the flip side to women. Those women that seek to keep the children from the fathers for their many different irrelevant selfish reasons. BEFORE was the time to vet and get clear. AFTERWARDS, you have made your bed. Suck it up and do in the best interest of the CHILD.
After a bowel movement, how many folks really spend time in deep thought about said bowel movement? That's why I said that before. LOL!
LAA, "So I guess that means Oakland and Atlanta completes the entire United States of America. More proof for the main topic of this post..."
ReplyDeleteOh come on, LAA. You know bw are more over weight than ww. Our kids certainly are. A lot of it has to do with our diet. Of course, if you want to deny it, go ahead. That won't change the truth.
That's our problem. We won't look at the truth. Until we do, there is nothing we can do because you can't change anything you are unwilling to accept.
anon11:08pm thanks for clearing things up.
ReplyDeleteI argued in Af.Am. History back in '82 that quality accessible education was the only possible reparation for slavery, and that the state of urban education was the #1 civil rights issue in the country. But then, I am white (really white) and the there was too much to fight, under Reagan, had already largely become a delaying action on reform rollbacks.
ReplyDeleteIf you're not born rich or both amazingly talented and and freakishly lucky, education's your only real shot at wealth and wealth is the only path to security.
Just a side note: I once heard a black guy complain that he didn't see his child for over a year because the "evil baby mama" blocked him. So, I asked him why he didn't once visit the child at the school when the "evil baby mama" wasn't around? Silence.
ReplyDeleteAnony 11:12, I wasn't denying anything. The thing is, most black women are also emotional eaters, it helps many cope with the hardship of being a black female in this oppressive, sexist, non-supportive and anti-black female society both racially external and internal.... etc etc and etc.
We have to be honest and say that the current curriculum not no longer fits the needs of the society. The curriculum is still based on rote teaching with the concentration of producing workers. The fact that schools have killed creativity, there is an article written a few weeks ago in Newsweek about how the creativity crisis in education. The article does not just talk about creating art or music, the creating original ideas and thoughts. The article mentioned a school in Ohio that the kids come up with a solution to reduce noise in the library, it seems no one thought that constructing a library on the noisiest side of the building would not be a good idea. That's education for you, but I digress. The students were sectioned off into groups to come up with the best cost-effective and efficient noise reduction. This is where the creative process fuels learning because it is through this flow that the kids learned about science and physics because you know how sound comes about and the kids probably learned geometry and math equations to help with the solution. Creativity is also about problem solutions, there are times when you need to be wrong in order to do more exploring to find best or right answer. Collaboration also occurred in the process as some the groups came together to find noise reduction solution. The kids did find a solution to the noise problem in the library. However, the country seems not to have a great appreciation for creativity. I think many of the kids are sitting in classroom across this country are bored, and think it's probably a big part of the reason why kids drop out. I have to tell you that I hated going to elementary school because I was bored. The school had me in Title One classes at the time because my reading and math was not up to par, and I have to tell that if it wasn't for my mother buying books like World Book Encyclopedia, and subscriptions to National Geographic, Highlights, and Jack & Jill and my tendency to daydream I probably would have lost my mind. There was a time in 6th grade when the teacher asked the class to write an essay about Alex Hailey, so watch whatever news program or read any newspaper article about the AH and his book Roots to write my essay. It was the first time any teacher asked me to write something of nature that injected my thoughts. I was the only person who got an A because the rest of the class did not know to put words onto paper, we only knew multi-choice. I later learned in college while taking a course in educational psychology that the majority of people statistically do better with answering multi-choice questions than writing answers in essay form. My professor couldn't understand why I received a D on the multi-choice portion of the exam, but received an A- on the essay. I told her I hated multi-choice tests because writing essay was better for my thought process, and may discover in the process that my original thesis could be wrong and that is a challenge for me.
ReplyDeleteKids are not challenged, they are learning with the sad repetitive 2 + 2 = 4. You are taught how, but the question why does not occur in the learning process. I wanted to why 2 + 2 = 4 and the answer is correct, but why. I wanted to know came up with this, what is this math thing that you speak of, and how does it apply or relate to everyday life. Think of the people you think may be brilliant, but also creative like Bill Gates, Albert Eintein, and George Washington Carver. George found literally 10 of dozens of uses for the peanut and other food stuffs to better the lives of people. You see I haven't written so much that over an hour has past. I started writing at the beginning of a TV show and the show is over and another has begun.
ReplyDeleteWe can create as many charter schools and close schools that are no longer performing, but it will not change the fact that way we teach isn't working. Besides, school vouchers is not a new concept as the idea has existed as far back as the 1790s when there was a debate about the country having private or public schools. This is just a distraction to avoid the fact the curriculum sucks and they are teaching kids to take tests and not creativity.

Because the vast majority of white Americans are not racist. Thanks for admitting that.
LAA, "I once heard a black guy complain that he didn't see his child for over a year because the "evil baby mama" blocked him. So, I asked him why he didn't once visit the child at the school when the "evil baby mama" wasn't around? Silence."
ReplyDeleteMaybe he didn't because he was afraid and it was against the law. My question to you was why didn't you agree with him that the mother was dead wrong?
"there are still a lot more fat bw than ww. You are in profound denial."
ReplyDeleteOk...So I guess the Oakland and Atlanta you "see" would lead you to believe there are more BW than WW in America?!
Now, I was specific when I instructed you to put.on.your.thinking.cap. You need to do that and focus BEFORE you comment again.
FLOTUS is addressing CHILDHOOD obesity btw.
I don't do denial. Hence my earlier comment:
"Black women MUST in greater numbers start taking care of themselves FIRST and FOREMOST. On a spiritual, physical, and financial level. More black women/girls must eliminate ALL unhealthy relationships, with folks AND food."
Obesity is indicative of a greater problem. I embrace discipline in my journey; she/he that hates it, hates themselves, hence my single digit dress size and toned body. Don't sleep. Lol!
I am not trying to be rude, I am inviting you to wake up and THINK. It is not illegal...yet.
There are many more fat ww than black ones. Consistently pounding on black women for being fat is further efforts to beat down the black woman. And the same ones indulging in the practice will be the ones talking about how black women have poor self esteem. As a black woman, I am reserving the right to stand up and say enough! See, I don't believe in asking for a break. I take them. Those that it bothers will be alright...or not. Life is about choices.
Got it?
We need to make the Urban Prep program viral throughout America. Target the next innercity with the largest dropout rate, then the next, and keep going. I am sure people will volunteer to help if there is a system in place and we are made aware.
ReplyDeleteAnon, "You must be really fat."
ReplyDeleteanon, that was totally uncalled for. I recently joined OA and it has helped me a lot. There is a connection between food, stress and sex. Unfortunately, not too many bw show up for help. It's a shame.
The problem is black culture. Not you (the educated people who post on this blog) but the millions who watch a lot of BET and live on government cheese.
ReplyDeleteFace it, it can be fun being black. The option is there not to have to study, or work hard, because there's always the cop out that you're being held down by the man and hey, let's party.
Maybe Earl Butz was right, all (most) blacks want is tight pussy, loose shoes, and a warm place to shit. ...
ReplyDelete"I am not trying to be rude, I am inviting you to wake up and THINK. It is not illegal...yet."
ReplyDeleteYes you are. And you are also in denial about that. Nevertheless, who will listen to a mean-spirited condescending person like you, anyway?...miss fp.
That was FP? Oh boy. UTS is going to have a field day tomorrow with her and LAA. There will be nothing left of them when he finishes.
ReplyDeleteVal-
ReplyDeleteNow, I invite you to look at numbers of Whites to Black in this country and vice versa. See the problem with the percentages?
Furthermore, IF you are the head of the class, which Whites are in this nation. They ARE the dominant group. WHY would those in remedial courses try to act like they don't need to study in order to at least catch up if not be competitive? WHY?! Why handicap yourself further?!
Val,it was numbers that I was addressing with the other commenter that spoke to fat BW. Numerically speaking, there are FEWER fat BW DESPITE folks trying to act like BW wrote the book on obesity.
Care to address THAT? Val? Lol.
La, you are correct that BW are engaging in unhealthy relationships with food. I addressed that earlier. Emotional eating is NOT healthy. It is imperative for our survival and in the interest of self love that we replace those bad habits with good ones. Go for a walk or a run. Meditate. Because after one finishes seeking solace in food as a means of dealing with the open hostility directed at them from black folks and white folks alike in this society, then they have extra pounds and more reasons to be ridiculed. We MUST empower ourselves. Big hug to you La. I enjoy reading your contributions to this blog.

ReplyDeleteIf thinking that about me helps you to feel comfortable in some way, then go right ahead. Everyone needs a technique to help them cope with things they don't like or things they don't like to hear. LOL.
Anony said... "Maybe he didn't because he was afraid and it was against the law. My question to you was why didn't you agree with him that the mother was dead wrong?"
In his case it wasn't against the law and there wasn't any type of custody battle or restraining orders. Where I live, parents or guardians can show up to their child's school, get a pass, and speak to the teacher/s or child during certain times - especially the elementary level. I'm sure there are many schools in the mainland US that also practice this.
And no the mother wasn't wrong. His idea of "blocking" was not being able to "pop up" unannounced to the mother's home without calling ahead of time. My ex used to do this to me also, I think its a form of spitefulness, control and disrespect. There are boundaries a non-custodial parent (or anyone for that matter) should understand and adhere to. Now, the guy I was initially referring to could have filed for joint or visitation rights, but we all know with court ordered visitation it wouldn't be on his "whenever I feel like showing up" terms, it would have to be consistent. And we also know what the courts would require him to do financially.
Sometimes you have to read between the lines when some "baby daddys" come with their sad story. And yes there are spiteful "baby mamas", but to me, there are much more of the "baby daddys" who are not forthcoming with the truth.
ditto fn!

One advantage that African-American kids have over most people in the world is the ability to speak English. It's the international language of business. To be a success anywhere on the globe, you have to speak it. But we're letting this advantage slip away too. Many of our kids don't want to speak English. In our day, we used to talk a certain way on the corner, but when we got into the house, we switched to English. We used to blame the kids for talking this way until we heard some of their parents. Some black parents couldn't care less.
Most black employers we know want to see the entire community prosper. But even they don't want to hire boys who can't dress properly, and who speak as if English were a second language. When we see these boys walking around the neighborhood, we imagine them thirty or forty years down the road wandering around just as aimlessly, and we want to cry.
A mother can usually teach a daughter how to be a woman. But as much as mothers love their sons, they have difficulty showing a son how to be a man. A successful man can channel his natural aggression. Without that discipline, these sons often get into trouble at school because many teachers find it difficult to manage their "acting out" behavior. If you think we're exaggerating, talk to a teacher.

Academic ability is more important than ever before in our global economy. Children must now compete with global intellectuals. Retirement is a fiscal fantasy in an increasingly technological world, where students must learn many skills for perpetual job changes. Today, an inability to learn is suicidal.

WHY do folks try so hard to control others?
It is not about "difficulty", it is about desire. You desire a blogger account and have one. I don't and...don't. Simple.
And the OOW rate has much to do with the lack of educational attainment on the part of black males.
Men regulate the behavior of other men/males. In the absence of men, by the age of thirteen, quite a few black males start trying to do what they WANT to do not what they NEED to do. So unless they can graduate BEFORE they smell themselves as my Grandpa used to say... SHRUG. Playing with the numbers and percentages will in no way change this fact.
While we discuss lack of education, anyone care to see what these fellas are up to while they roam around in unproductive packs? They have replaced the old school three R's with new school three R's: Raping, Robbing, Reaking Havoc! Folks were talking about white safety zones, when peace walls are erected holding folks IN undesirable areas...Woe be to those that did not have an ear to hear. The black male female protectors need to hold their posts. Ya'll will get a chance to see what you got coming by way of appreciation. Take a peek at Congo, Rwanda, South Africa, Haiti and Dunbar Village for a quick look at coming attractions.
There are more White people in America period. For some peculiar reason folks remember this when it is time to protect black males and their wee little feelings. When Black Women are being lamblasted...CRICKETS. LOL.

The problem has been festering for so long and it's so multi-faceted that only a nation wide policy change-along with an enormous outlay of resources- would do any good. You have to go about changing economics, culture, infrastructure, perceptions about governmental involvement, etc. And that's just not likely to happen outside of a nationwide effort.

There are many black women that are refusing to be silent any longer. Polite silence in the interest of not hurt wee little feelings is not working. Furthermore, if you love folks, you will tell them the truth.

Ok...would that fall under "bitter"? Because you know that is the script for anyone calling it. LOL! It is ok, let me help you, because I am a giver... "bitter, fat, man hating, lesbian, and can't get a man". See, I know the routine. I am immune and committed to calling it like I see it.

My "insensitivity" to some black men's need to have their crazy co-signed does not leave me isolated. I was speaking of numbers and percentages earlier. See, I am at peace with the fact that the percentages of black men about their business and the numbers of available ones are REAL slim. I don't have a preference for hue in men. Never did. The fact that schools have killed creativity, there is an article written a few weeks ago in Newsweek about how the creativity crisis in education"
hennasplace, that's a great point.
"Dear Field, it's taking a long time for approval in previous threads. Sometimes it been hours.....What gives?"
Just one field.
I would interesting in learning how the charter schools are teaching the children. I believe that school should teach in a setting where the curriculum is more project driven than kids just sitting and listening to the teacher talk. I read the article by Jason Riley, but the question I have is in what ways are the charter schools in Harlem are successful. And the money that is being made from charter school because they are owned by private companies as well and it would be interesting to discover their motives. Are the children engaged and are they really being challenged in charter schools? These are questions that I have because I am perpetually 8 years old and need to know the what, why, where, when, and how. We need to know why it's successful and also ask why isn't this success being being used throughout the rest of public schools. I have this feeling that charter school is a vehicle to end public education to a private system where everyone will have to pay for school. This will mean that poor people who are already at a disadvantage will be further disenfranchise. What we have to understand the intentions and motives of others. In New York City, big businesses are fueling the charter school business. I find it suspect that these charter schools are quoting 100% success rates. I am not saying that the charter schools are not more successful than other public schools, but it may not be at the number its quoting. It reads too much like informercial to me because they are essentially guaranteeing all kids that attend these charter will get into college. I think they weeded out the students who didn't get into college and fudged the numbers a bit. There is a question about the percentage of students attended charter will graduate from college and we do not know that information. We have to remember that the majority of people in this country do not have college degrees across the broad. I just want to know more.
ReplyDeletehennasplace,
ReplyDeleteI always felt that charter schools self select and they also reinforce segregation. I know the latter doesn't seem to bother people any more, but I don't like the idea that the first time a student competes with someone different is in the workplace. Charter schools also re-enforce separate and unequal, because the backers will put more funding in infrastructure in some charter schools and not others. The state may give identical money per student, but the resources vary from school to school. In some neighborhoods here in Philly, charter schools have almost replaced the regular public school and guess whose left behind, the neighborhood minorities.
FN,
ReplyDeleteIf you questioned what I've said, look at how many charter schools that are between 5th and Hunting Park and C and Erie and the student makeup verses the neighborhood makeup.
How do the current hs graduation rates compare to those of ten years ago? Twenty years ago? From the sixties or earlier?
ReplyDeleteAll else equal I think children put the value on education that their parents do.
ReplyDeleteOf course all else is not equal and there's the issue..
I also wonder what the graduation rate were for white males, living in industrialized cities 25 years ago. I work with their wives when they were locked out or on strike and those women had very little education.I was appalled how few had finished high school.

Yeah. Scary. And, like virtually every other number reported by nitwit journalists -- it's wrong.
The real graduation rates are much higher. They're lousy nonetheless, but not as bad as sensationalizing journalists or educrats crusading for more funding declare.
High Schools have poor accounting systems. Rarely does a school know why a student is no longer enrolled or where he goes when he leaves. People move from city to city, which means kids leave one school and enroll in another. A lot can happen that makes it impossible to know who graduates and who has permanently dropped out of school.
However, the numbers most often used to frighten Americans are more likely the numbers of black students who do not graduate ON SCHEDULE.
Meanwhile, there is no question that black students trail asians and whites on standardized tests. There is a learning gap that is real and measurable beginning in grade school.
Only forty seven percent of black males are graduating high school in this country

Yes, well, that's a function of how well they performed on the entrance exams for each institution. With respect to prison, the court system has judged blacks to be high achievers.

Between the ages of 18 and 24, however, black men in college outnumber those incarcerated by 4 to 1.

Why? You must be kidding. The reason these programs work is simple. They can throw out the problem students.
Nothing wrong with that. Kids need to be where they fit best. But Washington cannot tolerate the notion or suggest in any way that some students are lousy students due to innate behavior/maturity issues or because they less smart than others.
In the la-las land of Washington, every kid has what it takes to enter and succeed at Harvard -- if enough money is spent.

Count on you to get it wrong.
This is one of those statistics that is meaningless in so many ways.
Most blacks sent to jail as teenagers receive relatively short sentences. Thus, when studying the question of blacks -- college or prison -- the answer is not binary. Not either or.
It is not a question of whether more blacks are locked up or in the classroom.
Obviously, between the ages of 18 and 24, a black, or anyone, can spend a little time in jail and a little time in college.
It would be interesting to know what percentage of blacks and how many blacks spent time in both jail and college.
But the either/or question is meaningless.
WRONG Steve,
ReplyDeletePoor citation of resource...c'mon you can do better than that.

Tell them since they like to look "young, fly and flashy" that there's nothing wrong with actually using a belt for it's intended purpose. I actually used a line from a rap song to get my kid to think about his self appearance, "Shoulders, chest, pants, shoes - Wipe me down.". Shoulders back, chest out, pants pulled up, shoes clean. Typically, private schools do not adhere to any of the genocidal and mindless tenets of NCLB. Private schools do not tolerate misbehavior or enable abusive or absentee parents. Teachers at private schools are allowed to teach, while public school teachers are forced to compulsively test and perpetually discipline. This is a tragic national disgrace!

ReplyDeleteStudent discipline
ReplyDeleteThey're Your Problem
While many of the students in Tammy McCartney's Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, middle school classroom were attentive, more than a handful preferred to horseplay and wander the room. Administrators signed off on her plan to place troublesome students at an isolated desk in the corner, but that became a pipe dream in a room so crammed with students that one needed to turn sideways to walk the aisles. Administrators discouraged sending students to the office. When one absolutely needed to be sent, the teacher had to first stop and fill out a referral form, and even then the student was usually sent right back to the classroom, his or her behavior unchanged.
Compounding the problem were phone calls to parents that yielded indifference or blatant animosity. McCartney's breaking point came the day that a boy put a sweatshirt on as a pair of pants and waddled around the classroom, creating havoc. When she called his house, his mother said he must have just been cold, and hung up. "I said, 'I think I've had enough,'" McCartney, 29, says. She quit last spring.
Unmanageable discipline problems mean more than a headache in the classroom. For teachers like McCartney, they erode desire to invest time and energy in lesson plans that make the content come alive for students. Preservice training is often of little help, too. "We spent very little, if any, time on discipline," McCartney says of the training she received the summer before entering the classroom. "I entered the profession completely unprepared for discipline problems."
Deciding to leave devastated McCartney, a once optimistic and enthusiastic young teacher. "Gosh, it was a really big defeat," she says, letting out a deep breath. "Teaching is important, but I got to the point where I wasn't willing to sacrifice so much anymore."

ReplyDeleteYour point is another thought to consider. There are some problems with charter schools that we are not aware of because they are not subjected to evaluation. People within the community are beginning to have questions as well. Education in this country is set up to be competitive and it's another thing that kills creativity and innovation. We have to do a better job at recognizing talents in children and focus on them. If Johnny does well in the arts, then create a curriculum for him that will nuture and support that talent. If Jane loves tinkering with gadgets to find out how they work, then create an environment that will allow her to do that. One size fit all education isn't working. I would like to see more entrepreneurial pursuits in schools. Kids should know the basics about managing money, and a good way of doing that is allowing them create a business such as opening and running a store with the teachers facilitiating. Let them start and grow a garden within the community and sell the produce, or at the very least they can the produce for their lunch. Do you realizing how many subjects a person is learning by starting and growing a garden? They get to learn about botany, geology, ecology, math, and even about weather patterns. Education in theory should be a nuturing environment for children to learn and grow, for them to discover a purpose and meaning in life. In addition, finding their talents. No doesn't know how to do anything, and to let you in on a little secret farming can be very lurative particularly organic farming. I'm just saying that there opportunities out there.

ReplyDeleteAt one time the creativity you speak of was fostered by the after school clubs. There are some schools that don't have the money to keep the schools open after school(overtime for the custodian) or teachers wouldn't be there to sponsor those clubs.
Even schools here that are devoted to specific talents have been put in the desegregation program, which fills up with previous private schools students at the high school level, thus the brilliant mechanic, artist or musician with a B - average gets ignored. That I can attest too.

ReplyDeleteYou can foster creativity through a school project such as what the school did in Ohio by giving kids the assignment of finding an cost-effective and efficient way to reduce noise in the library. That was done during school hours. It can be built right into the curriculum. People do not realize this but creativity can be teach in school other ways than art and music which they need to have. Creativity is the ability to generate innovative ideas and manifest them from thought into reality. The process involves original thinking and then producing and better place than to do this than at school. I know many people know George Washington Carver to be a scientist, but he was also creative by producing products with the use of the peanut and sweet potato which were alternatives to cotton. He was dubbed as the Black Leonardo by Time Magazine in 1941 because he also had interests in painting, poetry, music, knitting and crochet.
the very same politicos that pimped and ignored poor parents with hobamacare also ignore how many students cannot learn because they are malnourished/ill/need glasses/can't hear etc...

Total nonsense. Charter schools are hammered with evaluations because the Teachers' Union opposes them. They are public schools that receive taxpayer funding, which the Teachers' Union attempts to hog all for itself.

ReplyDelete...the question I have is in what ways are the charter schools in Harlem are successful.
For the single reason that caring parents are involved with the education of their children -- inside and outside of school.
And the money that is being made from charter school because they are owned by private companies as well and it would be interesting to discover their motives.
Another nitwit comment. You, like most nitwits, know nothing about school funding. The Harlem Children's Zone is funded largely by CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS coming from, among others, Stanley Druckenmiller, a Wall Street billionaire. His colleague in this venture is Geoffrey Canada.
Are the children engaged and are they really being challenged in charter schools?
You seem to have no idea what you're asking and it seems you lack all understanding of education.
We need to know why it's successful and also ask why isn't this success being being used throughout the rest of public schools.
Successful schools can throw out problem students, which gives the willing students a good learning environment.
I have this feeling that charter school is a vehicle to end public education to a private system where everyone will have to pay for school.
Now you are showing your towering ignorance about the law regarding public education.
What we have to understand the intentions and motives of others.
Whose intentions? Whose motives? The members of the Teachers Union? Parents? The Department of Education? Students?
In New York City, big businesses are fueling the charter school business.
You're nuts. What Big Businesses are "fueling the charter school business"?
I find it suspect that these charter schools are quoting 100% success rates. I am not saying that the charter schools are not more successful than other public schools, but it may not be at the number its quoting.
You're claiming the charter schools are dishonest. It seems you prefer the historical dishonesty of the public school system that eternally promises better results if enough money is spent. But every year more money is spent and results at public schools NEVER improve.
It reads too much like informercial to me because they are essentially guaranteeing all kids that attend these charter will get into college.
No one has ever made that claim. But it would be true, nonetheless. ANYONE who GRADUATES from high school will get accepted by at least one college somewhere.
There is a question about the percentage of students attended charter will graduate from college and we do not know that information.
Graduating from high school never guarantees graduating from college.

"via teasing, hygiene, mental issues, sexual abuse, angry acting out etc ALL of these classroom issues are directly related to how politicos abuse and ignore poor parents!!!
And Steve was on to something when he suggested that we could not expect a lot from about three generations of folks who have been undersocialized and undereducated, many who see no use for education.
So we can't bemoan missed opportunities no more than a team can spend time bemoaning a missed touchdown pass. We have to go back to the huddle and figure out another way to advance the ball.
And Field the acadamies and Geofrey Canada still can pick and choose, the public schools cannot they have take all comers, just as they are so to speak.
So we can chew on this old rag as long as we want but until there is a national will to educate ALL children we will continue to have this semi lottery that education has become.
However in the meantime we can try stop gap measures like what Geoffrey Canada has done and like Chicago Prep, but we must also roll up our sleeves in our community and do what we can to help the children who are left out of even those opportunities.
That means opening up churches to use for tutoring of kids. It means stepping up and helping the parent or parents that we see and know are struggling. It means using our churches and service organizations to solicit volunteers to work with the schools to help in classrooms to either tutor or find ways to distract the unruly.
Everytime I read the history of black folks in crisis I am struck by how our ancestors figured out ways to make things happen for themselves.
You know there were no schools for free blacks up north until black folks came together and organized and formed schools.
In that past our people found a way. Since few people are interested in the "real" solution, which is a radical restructuring of society, (so that all human beings and all children count) then the next alternative is to roll up ones sleeves and start applying community bandaids and make the best of an obviously broken system.

When it comes to the public schools, the Obama administration is allied with the most rapacious sectors of Wall Street and far-right foundations. That political reality is most evident in the administration's campaign to establish a parallel national network of charter schools, with a heavy emphasis on inner cities. Obama and his education chief, Arne Duncan, have spent their first year and a half in office coercing states to expand charters or lose out on more than $4 billion in federal education moneys. Obama's allies on Wall Street invest heavily in charter schools, tapping into the public money stream to build their own vision of corporate education.

Really? So the academic failure of black kids is a failure of the US government. If that were true, there would be a black nation somewhere on the planet where almost all young blacks were competent students. But that black nation does not exist.
...then the next alternative is to roll up ones sleeves and start applying community bandaids and make the best of an obviously broken system.
The existing public education system works well for a lot of students. In NY City for example, where there is a competitive segment open to all kids who willingly put in some work.
However, the competitive segment of the NY City public school system is entered by way of scores on competitive exams. The dominant players are asians, followed by whites.
Though blacks and hispanics account for 70% of students in the system, few qualify for the competitive schools.
The blame falls on the idiots who brought them into the world.
But that black nation does not exist.

ReplyDeleteToxic parenting is universal in America. It knows no boundaries of race or class. Reality television proves that rich white parents are often even more toxic than poor black ones. Toxic parenting entails: Parents who begin abusing children chemically in their wombs, with recreational drugs and toxic diets; Parents who poison wombs that leave permanent damage inside children’s brains and nervous systems; Parents who do nothing to give lonely fatherless boys mandatory male role models; Parents who routinely physically and verbally assault teachers, but never spank or reprimand their children; Parents who buy children breasts and noses, rather than teach them to become surgeons; Parents who buy students expensive designer clothes, but never show them how to obtain free library cards; Parents who abuse drugs and dress like whores and thugs, as they actively encourage their children to become consummate mini clones; Parents who never attend a teacher conference, but never miss a field trip or party; Parents who are always on time at hair salons or nightclubs, but never bring children to school on time; Parents who harass or ignore teachers as they coddle or neglect children; Parents who brazenly place schools'/teachers' phone numbers on "call block", so that they are not bothered when their children bother others during school hours; Parents who hijack schools as babysitters, even on days when classes are not in session; Parents who brazenly enroll their children in first grade classes, fully aware that these children have never attended Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten; Parents who never read any books, and never read to their children; Parents who never teach children any moral intelligence, because they are amoral themselves; Parents who never teach children to sit still, behave, listen, and concentrate; Parents who hate children and dare to demand that teachers and other surrogates fully parent their own children; Parents who never teach children to do their homework; Parents who are intellectually incapable of helping children, or seeking tools/tutors to help children, with their homework; Parents who have no concept of proper child nutrition or sleep patterns; Parents who neither do or assign any chores; Parents who are irresponsible and incapable of teaching children to be responsible

It isn't hard to get your son (or daughter) to graduate high school IF you actually RAISE your child.
ReplyDelete1. School is THEIR job. They should be sent prepared w/ the proper supplies and attitude. They also have to be on time.
2. The parent must monitor their child's progress. For example, by the end of the first grade your child should be ablr to read The Cat in the Hat. Go to parent-teacher conferences. Do not assume your child is telling the whole story. Check their homework.
3. Be involved at your child's school. Go on a field trip. Drop in if you can. Let your child know that you value their education.
4. Have some rules at your house. Set a bedtime. No TV on school nights. No back talking adults. As your children grow up- let them know that you expect them to graduate high school, stay out jail and remain childless until they are married. My folks did this and me and my brothers fulfilled those minimum requirements plus some.

____
Excerpts from The Shame of the Nation: The Restoration of Apartheid Schooling in America by Jonathan Kozol:
Pediatricians and psychiatrists may be disturbed to hear of schools where recess is truncated or abolished by the desperation to carve out a bit more time for drilling children for exams.
I thought the tests-and-standards movement had been loaded with a coarse utilitarian toxicity and a demeaning anti-human view of childhood right from the start.
By giving every particle of learning an official name, we strip it of its uniqueness.
Fascination and delight, no matter what lip-service we may pay to them, become irrelevant distractions.
Teachers who come into elementary education with some literary background tell me that they sometimes feel they are engaging in a complicated kind of treachery, when they are forced repeatedly to excavate a piece of poetry, or any other literary work of charm or value, to extract examples of official skills that have some testable utility. Nothing could be less efficient than this misappropriation of a teacher’s energy and hours.
The difference in too many schools like P. S. 65 is that nearly the entire school day comes to be a matter of unnatural theatrics that cannot be improvised to any degree without the risk of teachers being criticized by their superiors.
Leaving these kids so utterly adrift in time and place seemed like an act of state-determined cognitive decapitation.
In a nation in which fairness was respected, children of the poorest and least educated mothers would receive the most expensive and most costly pre-school preparation, not the least and cheapest, because children in these families need it so much more than those whose educated parents can deliver the same benefits of early learning to them in their home.
The inequities in educational provisions that we give, or do not give, these children from the starting gate are given less attention.
The look of tortured dignity in the eyes of many [educators] who had welcomed me remained as one of the most stirring memories of that experience.

Sometimes Slapz you are absolutely absurd. The words restructuring of society were the words used by MLK to talk about the need for this society to stop focusing on the needs of the rich and focusing on the needs of all the citizens of the society.
And that is what I mean. Needless to say you probably offended all Muslims with your sweeping statement which is not even close to true. In fact there are millions of Muslims living among us in the US who do not wish you or the US harm.
What a blanket racist and ignorant thing to say.
mellanous,
ReplyDeleteThe HNIC's that Field spoke of, keeps many of the grassroots efforts at bay. that also include the rules of helping out in a classroom.
I had thought of possibly getting into a teaching program after I retired. The school system were looking for people who had degrees or much of their course work in science and math. I backed out, because I was required to also get a Masters in Education, while teaching, in order to meet the professional requirements. So were those students being taught going to be less better off than those whom I would teach with a Masters in Ed? Since I was going to be retired I didn't want to go back to school, it would be too taxing, but I think I could have made some contribution and perhaps helped students become more adept in Math.
For after school programs to work, you have to get the children to them, which requires quite of bit of parental involvement. I found from working in the Scout program, that many parents are so stressed, that many programs are seen as a way to relieve the parents of responsibility temporarily.

NO Slapz your ignorance is showing!
Many black nations and civilizations educated their populations even while Europeans were still dwelling in cages.
At present most black nations are struggling as third world countries and are struggling to just try to feed their populations and of course many are suffering from the corruption and greed that is actually encouraged by the Imperialist nations.
Black folks achieve as much as anyone else when allowed to and given equal opportunity. White folks in situations in which they are prevented from having the necessities of life struggle as well.
So cut out the false racist constructs.Don't kid yourself you can repeat racist suppositions all you want but it won't make it true. And there will come a time when folks like you who sole purpose is to divide and denigrate won't have a place in polite society.

ReplyDeleteThe reason for writing my comments is to ask the questions. And if you read what I wrote earlier I mentioned that vouchers isn't a new idea. Just because I have a feeling doesn't necessary mean that I am right. However, I think we need to ask questions about charters and what are they doing to become successful if we want to use as a model for the rest of eduation. I am for asking how things work because as it part of the learning process. I do not know anyone who doesn't ask questions when wanting to learn. It's also a part of the critical thinking process. No, you had to come out with name calling rather engaging in a conversation, no wonder the educational system is in trouble. It's okay that I am igorant about a topic because I certainly do not proclaim to know everything. Actually Diane Ravitch who is historian of education probably knows more about this topic than anyone making comments and reading her book Left Book: A Century of Failed School Reforms has giving some ideas and thoughts about why school reform isn't successful.
Now you mentioned that some billionaires have contributed to the Harlem Children Zone, the funding is still coming from business branch and one person does have to ask why he is investing in the organization. You have to remember that education is driving by need to produce workers. So it's not a nitwit thing to ask what are these billionaire businessmen who donated are getting in return because it is not 100% altruistric.
I have somewhat of an understand about the education considering that I do recall attending public school for at least one day. I am inquisitive, I like to ask questions oh I don't know so that I can learn. I am a skeptic because the question still remains by only a few students are going to learn and will happen to the remaining students who do not have the advantage of a charter school education. We are still at square one with really reforming the public education system, and I do agree with Ravitch that it will not happen in our lifetime.
Hathor that is deep! Its one of the ways the beauracracy gets in the way of those who really do care and want to participate and help our children.
ReplyDeleteCheck this out:
When I was in Miami there was a struggling elementary school that was assigned to a former assistant principal who lived in the neighborhood and really cared about the students.
This guy actually got real live parents in the hood to get involved in the school. They actually came to the PTA meetings. They actually participated with children in after school events. Kids actually looked forward to going to school, they would actually talk to the principal when they saw him and even hug him.
Well the school had been a so-called failing inner city school and the principal according to the HNIC (who was later run out of town on a rail incidentally by the same Cuban folks who he tried to kiss up to) the principal had not pulled up the scores fast enough. So this dedicated man who actually got the neighborhood to volunteer and participate in helping raise money for school activities and even got folks to come in and tutor kids who were behind, was reassigned.
And those same semi-employed,barely literate, underemployed and welfare mothers and former welfare mothers, former drug dealing dads, former gang banging dads and other assortment of working folks (some fresh off the streets some fresh out of treatment) organized themselves (with my help and a few others) and wrote an eloquent letter and organized themselves to meet with the superintendent.
When the sperintendent failed to hear them they took their complaints to the school board and made placards and picketed the meeting. And they kept it up until it was clear that they were not going to be heard.
I tried to point out to the superintendent the obvious, which is that this man actually got parental and community involvement, which incidentally had been one of his planks upon taking the supt job. And that the scores had indeed improved and that he got the whole school to begin taking reading very seriously. It was absolutely amazing the turnabout that occured at that school because one man cared that much.
But the supt missed a golden opportunity. In fact the school board sent out thier lackeys with fancy charts and graphs and tried to make these parents feel stupid by suggesting in some not so subtle ways that they really did not know how to help their children.
And what did that teach these struggling parents about involvement? Did it encourage them to get more involved?
And a great deal of the academically competitive minority children in NYC are attending parochial schools as I and my siblings did from kindegarten to eighth grade

ReplyDeleteBarbados? Please. A tiny island home to less people than live in my neighborhood of Flatbush is statistically insignificant.
Moreover, the island's prosperity is mainly a function of the fact that it employs a number of people in the oil refining business, a business run from other parts of the world.
What does that mean? It means it is not the native intelligence of the locals that has led to better than average SAT scores. It means it is the people -- not blacks -- in Barbados to run the oil business who have the kids getting the high SAT scores.
Furthermore, the only reason oil refining occurs in places like Barbados is the prohibitions in other countries. Like the US, where new refineries are not built.
The US only permits remodelling and retrofitting old refineries. No new ones.
On the other hand, Nigeria is home to 100 million people AND it has oil out its wazoo. Thus, its wealth is measured in billions and billions. But the wealth is either in the ground or ripped off by the eternally corrupt black leaders of the country.

Once again you show your complete ignorance schools and school funding.
Charter schools are public schools run under different rules than regular union-run schools.
Vouchers have NO connection to Charter Schools.
Vouchers are checks a parent can spend at the school of his choice. A parent could use a voucher to pay his child's tuition at a private school.
But there's no tuition charged at Charter schools because they are public schools.
Now you mentioned that some billionaires have contributed to the Harlem Children Zone, the funding is still coming from business branch and one person does have to ask why he is investing in the organization.
Wrong again. The money from Wall Street billionaires is coming out of their own pockets -- Charitable Contributions to make a better world.
You have to remember that education is driving by need to produce workers. So it's not a nitwit thing to ask what are these billionaire businessmen who donated are getting in return because it is not 100% altruistric.
When it comes to Wall Street billionaires GIVING money to schools in Harlem, their motivation IS 100% altruistic.

As you said, the requirement drove you out of teaching, thereby doing what it was intended to do while doing nothing to benefit students.
The requirement creates an artificial labor shortage.
ReplyDeleteAre you nuts? There is an overabundance of teachers and continuing ed credits can be obtained in most states in leu of masters.

ReplyDeleteI work for a nonprofit, and companies and private people with deep pockets do not give money just for the sake of giving, there are always strings attached. I didn't write anything about vouchers and charter school having a connection although they are part of the equation of the school choice debate. I know vouchers are attached if parents want to send their children to a private school.
Although, I am thinking from what you are writing that you have some sort of interest in charter schools. You keep writing that they are Wall Street billionaires and that is raising a red flag with considering they were a part of the financial meltdown. I am not writing for or against charters, but I am asking questions.

"Moreover, the island's prosperity is mainly a function of the fact that it employs a number of people in the oil refining business, a business run from other parts of the world.
ReplyDeleteWhat does that mean? It means it is not the native intelligence of the locals that has led to better than average SAT scores. It means it is the people -- not blacks -- in Barbados to run the oil business who have the kids getting the high SAT scores. "
Yep, pretty ignorant and pathetic.
Question: Have you ever been to Barbadoes?
I missed you too, AB.

ReplyDeletefn,
ReplyDeletehave you been to urban prep or the other charter schools you mentioned?
Trapped in SC in his first post stole much of my thunder. A major part of this problem is cultural. It's not just kids from crack mamas who don't graduate. Fifty years ago, black people could learn their butts off in a one room segregated shack. Today, if you don't incorporate something about hip hop in the curriculum, they aren't listening.
ReplyDeleteA lot of black males think being educated is "white," "gay" and just plain unmanly (apologies to white folks and to gays). Speaking standard English is considered punkish.
Go to any corner in a city with a significant black population and you will see more black teens hanging out on street corners than in libraries.
To get a good education, one has be to motivated. You hear the rare story about a homeless child who gets a scholarship to an Ivy League school because they were mostly self-motivated and someone along the way recognized their talent and helped them. But most kids would rather stand on a corner and get high than crack a book.
It does start at home. I don't care how small the class is, how many computers they have, how great the school facility is, a kid who has no motivation to learn, either self motivation or motivation from parents, is not going to learn.
I believe there is racism in educaiton and I know there is a disparity in education resources. But kids in poor schools all over the country manage to get an education and some even excel. It has to come with the child and his/her family.
And let me say one more time, for all the whining about white flight, black flight did much more damage. When the black middle class was free to live anywhere they wanted to, they left the traditionally black neighborhoods and left behind a segment of the black population with no daily role models for what it means to excel in anything. Not to guilt trip anyone because folks should live where they want to, but integration has ultimately been our undoing.

ReplyDeleteAccording to this, 25% of black folks are living in poverty. So how is it another 22% are not graduating from high school?
We are always poor mouthing. If we don't start dealing with the cultural contributions to our decline as a people, we are not going to survive.
I read a Rand study some years ago that said 70% of children born to single mothers grew up in poverty. it must be higher for black people. Instead of spending so many resuorces on midnight basketball for boys, how about focusing how how we can prevent teen girls from getting pregnant?
When undereducated boys no longer appeal to girls, I guarantee you that boys will want to stick their nose in a book.
"how about focusing how how we can prevent teen girls from getting pregnant?"
ReplyDeleteHow about focusing on how to make the boys and older men keep their dicks to themselves and away from the young school girls.
"When undereducated boys no longer appeal to girls, I guarantee you that boys will want to stick their nose in a book."
There will be more rapes and terrorizing since there won't be anymore volunteers for them to sex up and impregnate.
Fp, "Ok...would that fall under "bitter"? Because you know that is the script for anyone calling it. LOL! It is ok, let me help you, because I am a giver... "bitter, fat, man hating, lesbian, and can't get a man". See, I know the routine."
ReplyDeleteLet me help you out....It's not routine, it's a fact. You have already exposed who you are by using the same words you did in the past toward anon, LAA and AB.
I am sure UTS knows it is you, FP since he has been down this commentary road with you before...LOL You are still a liar who pretends to be frank and honest. LOL Don't you know you cannot deceive honest people? You are only deceiving yourself...ROFL.
anon 734 IS UTS.
ReplyDeleteAnon 6:27..Completely co sign with you. Good post. This is the line I liked the most: 'A lot of black males think being educated is "white," "gay" and just plain unmanly (apologies to white folks and to gays). Speaking standard English is considered punkish.'
ReplyDeleteI always prided myself in speaking "proper english" My reasoning was if you sound like you haven't past the 3rd grade who is going to listen to you? Also as a kid if I asked my Dad, (Surprise! I had a 2 parent home), how to spell a word or what the definition was his response was always,"look it up in the dictionary" - I tell my 9 yo the same thing. I grew up on rap/hip hop and the one thing I notice now when I listen to "old school" is the words that were used - rappers were always trying to "one up" other rappers with words that were more than 4 letters, that also taught me. And if I would want to know what that word meant in a rap sentence, no Google, A dictionary...Once again just ranting..Sorry ya'll been tired all day from playing poker all night last night. But once again, I dug your post.

well fn, by your line of reasoning, one must have "been there" to know what's going on. just following the line of reasoning you presented here.
ReplyDeletethank you

ReplyDeleteRottenKid@8:10p, I agree. I wish we had more bm in our community who valued education and english like you do.
ReplyDeleteUTS will go into denial, but there ARE more bm who are uneducated and speak poor english than not. That is an unfortunate situation.

ReplyDeleteWhatever helps you sleep at night loser.
I often wonder about folks like you who obsess with so-called "problems of black men."
You generally fall into two categories.
Bearillas who can't get a bm (or any other kind).........
Or racist punks who either got passed over on the job or lost their girlfriend to a brutha.
Stop hatin' and step up your game.
UTS will go into denial
ReplyDeletehe lives in the state of denial.
Anonymous... "RottenKid@8:10p, I agree. I wish we had more bm in our community who valued education and english like you do."
ReplyDeleteYou sure you want his kind a mentor? Be careful what you wish for, that one also prefers to date white girls.
UTS, does it hurt being so stupid?? It's hurting us man. It's hurting us.
ReplyDeletewhat blog is a winner for you?
ReplyDeleteone where we don't have to hear from you my friend.
Black men are the most talked about humans on the planet.
ReplyDeleteIt's because the black man was the first man on Earth and all non-black men came from him.
He was the father of civilization.
The strongest, most indomitable, creative and desireable beings on earth.
Those are the major reasons behind why we are hated out of ignorance, jealousy, and fear.
Exactly why so much is done to marginalize and contain us.
I am not an educator, I don’t pretend to be. I work for a school district with 19,000+ students as an SRO. I am no expert I teaching, sociology, child philology but I am a parent and care about all children. The problem with male students (not just bm’s) as I see it is a chain of events that once it starts is almost impossible for the school to solve. A male student gets behind at a young age (for different reasons). He doesn’t want to look bad in class and typically is physically a normal child. So rather than look as if he doesn’t know what’s going on in class and or look stupid he acts out, his way of attempting to either gain control of or seem as if he’s the same as the other students(they are children and want to be like the other children). The teacher can either try and deal with him in class and lose instructional time with the other students (putting one over the mass or others) either sends this student to the office, in school suspension or just sends him out in the hallway so they don’t lose the majority of the students.
ReplyDeleteI can’t put myself in the shoes of a minority male student, I’m a wm and had both parents. But I can tell you all with certainty all these young men (of all races) need a male figure to emulate. I try and do what I can to help but it would and does help for these young men to have someone that looks like them (see what a grown male of they’re race looks and acts like) and to spend time with them and try to help them understand how important it is to get they’re education.
All these fancy expensive programs are fine and dandy but if these young men spend they’re time in places other than the class rooms listening to the teacher they are not getting they’re education.
The bottom line is we all lose when these young men fail!
