"Why are you a Christian?"

Folks are buzzing about a poll out showing that atheist and agnostics actually know more about religion than church going folks. Frankly, I am not surprised. If, for instance, the folks who worship at the foot of Creflo and Bishop Eddie are examples of religious people, it actually all makes sense.

"Why did atheists do so well? The study concluded that those who reject faith often do so after growing up in a religious household, and studying and deliberating keeping the faith. Also, atheists and agnostics tend to be better educated in general. Why did Christians do so poorly? It may be because once someone accepts a faith, they stop examining it."

You religious folks would do well to learn Second Timothy, 2:15. I am just sayin.

"Why are you a Christian?" That's what some clown asked his O ness today at a campaign stop in New Mexico. O should have told the woman that it's none of her damn business, but we all know that as the President of these divided states he couldn't do that. Not when it's a question about religion. Not in A-merry-ca. If it's one thing we love it's our religion. And we want our leader to be god fearing just like us. (I am sorry if all this passion about religion makes me a little nervous. But I just saw a grainy video of the Taliban stoning a woman to death for being caught out on a date with a man.)

"It was because the precepts of Jesus Christ spoke to me in terms of the kind of life that I would want to lead -- being my brother's and sister's keeper, treating others as they would treat me," he said. ..And I think also understanding that, you know, that Jesus Christ dying for my sins spoke to the humility we all have to have as human beings -- that we're sinful and we're flawed and we make mistakes, and that we ... achieve salvation through the grace of God." ..My mother was one of the most spiritual people I knew but she didn't raise me in the church. So I came to my Christian faith later in life.."

Yes, just in time to run for President. Oh well, at least we know that you are not a Muslim.

    2 Timothy 2:15

"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth."

All humans ought to strive for the above, whether atheist, agnostic or true believer.

You would do well to not only learn Matthew 7:1 but take action to follow it..."Do not judge, or you too will be judged." Matthew 7:1 NIV

    Field,
I predict a busy thread, entertaining for the first fifty or sixty comments.

The obvious answer to the question is that it is impossible to be elected President as anything other than a Christian, practically speaking. Obama's answer seemed sincere, rather than cynical.

I will leave before my smartarse agnosticism starts enumerating the more amusing answers to the question.

What up Field? Just wanted to say that you brought up a good point. I think many folks opt out on the religious question because they get a bad taste in their mouths early on in life. However it does not negate the fact that there are some folks who are serious practitioners and are really committed to what is at the heart of all real religion; and that is love for humankind.

It also make sense that many Christians are not versed in their religion because for many its little more than a social club or a set of rules and regulations handed down by the preacher which they fail to research for themselves. NOt knowing the scriptures flies in the face of the essence of Christianity which requires that you read the scriptures and develop a relationship with God while simultaneously developing a good and just relationship with your fellow human beings.

The prophet Micah put it best when he explained that God required that folks walk humbly with God, love mercy and do justice.

So having said that as you have witnessed in some of the exchanges on this site some folks have a very myopic view of Christianity that has little to do with love and justice.

Its why I keep ignoring the person who keeps referencing Glen Beck as an expert on religion and especially black religion. I have no idea what they are talking about!

here in mississippi we lead the nation in illiteracy. however, we are also the most religious state in the union. yep. let that one marinate a while.

i've often questioned my religious beliefs. what makes me so sure mine is the one. because the dude down the street who is still waiting on the messiah thinks his is the one.

i'm christian because i was raised as such. those seeds were planted early and although shaky as hell, have not been uprooted yet.

I am with Gregory on this. My grandmother to use to take me to church with her, and always questioned how come she did not make my brothers go as well. Another burning question was how come the old sitting up front was able to take a nap and I wasn't. Another question came to mind who making the rules God or man, I decided that the answer to that question is man because no evidence that God wrote anything and neither did Jesus. We are basically going on the word of witness and as we all know witnesses are not always reliable.

I think the point of religion is to question. You have to ask yourself living in this world, is this all there is so aptly phased by Peggy Lee. I find religion interesting, I just think there is something wrong with the people who practice religion are the problem. People who are in church on Sundays do not question anything like the fact that there are two versions of the creation story in Genesis, or Luke's and Matthew's account of the birth of Christ are conflicting. I have not one single homily from the Song of Solomon because it's probably one of the most erotic pieces of literature written in human history. However, in the Jewish faith Song of Solomon is discussed and interrupted by Rabbis and Jewish scholars. Actually, theologians constantly questioned as they are skeptics. In fact, theologians should be the people who are in the pulpit as they are constantly studying the bible, Qu'ran, and the Torah. Somehow, I don't think we were suppose to have a middle man between God and the individual. Eddie Long tells his church members that God speaks to him. The members believe him because do not read the bible, or perhaps not thinking for themselves. Some people are looking for someone to lead them out of what hell they are in and hope for something better. And old Eddie tell them that God wants to be prosper and have a successful life. They are not going to have doubt, but everything must be positive and negativity is not in the equation. The folks have been bright-sided.

I agree with you. The point of practice is have the direct experience of God. If you can't do that, there isn't much point to practice. However, one needs to know how to practice, like anything else.

Humans are in religion seeking the Ideal because they are flawed. We are flawed because we make a lot of mistakes. But it's through mistakes that we learn. So, don't look for any 'goodie-two-shoes' or innocent people in religion. You will only find hypocrites and fallable people, from the lowest to the minister, to the Pope. Of course, there are many levels to this as there are people.

Interesting post, Field. I believe that many churchgoers make the fatal mistake of putting their blind trust in a man and an institution rather than placing it where it actually needs to be. It seems to be how any unscruptulous preacher can tout himself as a "man of the Lord" while committing many misdeeds. The flock is being led around with wool over their eyes....

Interesting. As an atheist I spent many years studying religion so I could debate the finer points with believers. Wated many o' moons debating Noah's ark et all on Black Planet but it did make me more informed about religion. Let's face it, all religions require some level of suspension of belief and some acceptance of hypocrisy. To keep my sanity I reject the idea of a god because we have to accept one of two possiblities 1. either there is a god and it allows so much tragedy in this world (babies starving or being blown up by mines) or there is no go and the universe is a random event. I choose two so I don't ave to pretend to love a being that shows so much favor to one group over another. There I go again.......gotta learn to stop when I'm ahead.

Yes, Nixon was a Quaker and his actions hardly bespeak qualities that Christians like to tout. However.. from the easiest source available, Wikipedia

"The Religious Society of Friends is a name used by a range of independent religious organizations which all trace their origins to a Christian movement in mid-17th century England and Wales. A central belief was that ordinary people could have a direct experience of the eternal Christ. Today different groups of Friends meet for worship in a variety of forms. Some meet for silent worship with no human leader and no fixed programme (mainly in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and parts of North America). Some meet for services led by a pastor with readings and hymns (mainly in Africa, Asia and parts of North America). Some have a form of worship which incorporates elements of both styles.

The Religious Society of Friends has been categorized as one of the peace churches, alongside the Church of the Brethren, Mennonites and Amish, because of all of these churches' emphasis on Christian pacifism. These churches also share other similarities in terms of theology including a literal interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount, an emphasis on simplicity in speech and dress, and a lack of creedal statements."

  42. Interesting but I think its somewhat a schewed study. There are more people in faith in the country, and atheism and so-called 'free thinkers" tend to be middle to upper middle class and college educated. There's a theological theorem on that, but that's another post.

Because most atheists tend to be scientists, academics and white collar professionals and there is greater diversity of intellect, education and occupation the statistics don't the tell the whole story.

In other words, it would be easy for, say Richard Dawkins or Bill Maher to talk circles around a Sarah Palin or Joe Sixpack about religion. Doesn't mean these people are idiots, it means that they're exposed to a lot more than the average person. And as most non-denominational churches and mega churches have rather loose academic standards, most of your run of the mill prosperity ministers couldn't hold up in a match either. I've got more Biblical knowledge than the average COGIC preacher, and I'm an engineer by training.

However, its whole other thing to debate religion with a real theologian. There are tons of philosophical "hand waves" that the so-called 'new brights' pull that simply won't fly in philosophy or in theology classes. Bill Maher can pull his typical shtick on 'Real Time' taking on some right wing goobers like Glen Beck. Its another to try and slap around a trained academics like R. C. Sproul, Peter Gomes or Shelby Spong.

Yes, most Christians aren't going to build quantum computers for Intel. And yes, most Atheists probably read above a 10th grade level and completed at least community college. But dunking on midgets doesn't make you Micheal Jordan or LeBron James.

What would be more interesting would be "Given equal education, do atheists and agnostic know more about religion than their religious counterparts?"

    From the Pan-African News Wire:

"Over 100 activists and journalists from various organizations, religious groups and media outlets attended a gathering with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the Warwick Hotel in New York City on September 21. The leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran was in the city to attend the annual United Nations General Assembly."

"Some of the individuals and organizations in attendance included former U.S. Congresswoman and Green Party presidential candidate for 2008 Cynthia McKinney of Georgia, poet and activist Amiri Baraka, MOVE Minister of Information Ramona Africa, International Action Center Co-Director Sara Flounders, Ardeshir and Eleanor Ommani, co-founders of the American-Iranian Friendship Committee, Former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, Million Worker March Movement organizer Brenda Stokely, Shafeah M'balia of the Black Workers for Justice, Phil Wilayto of the Virginia Defenders for Freedom, Justice and Equality, Larry Holmes of the Bailout the People Movement, Don DeBar of Wbaix.org, Ryme Katkhouda of the People's Media Center among others."

What a motely assortment of craven losers.

What is with this weird alliance between radical Muslims and left-over leftists. Ahmadinejad's Iran hardly seems like a Marxist paradise--its economy is a wreck, subsisting parasitically on oil production while the theocratic regime stones its own people for imagined crimes and enforces medieval dress codes.

Is this what the downfall of capitalism was always about? Pathetic.

  47. I read the study and took the mini 15 question test. You can do so as well here...
    http://features.pewforum.org/quiz/us-religious-knowledge/
Atheism or agnosticism is the media endorsed philosophy du jour.

A 15 out of 15 correct is not something worth boasting about.

Anyone who was somewhat awake during world religions in undergrad could have scored at least 12 out of 15.

I know. Not everyone goes to college. I know many with and without college degrees who have enough respect for their fellow humans and for cultures different from their own to take the time to LEARN about someone else's faith.

There are not many Americans, yes, including atheists and Jews, who will respect someone enough to learn about other religions. The whole absolutist thought pattern has, through tv and film, permeated our curriculum and world view. We are trained to think of others in a subhuman way...ahem tv addicts.

Many of us don't care to take the time to learn a foreign language, even though Spanish and French are largely spoken in North America as well as English. Why? We're Americans and they should learn to speak "American." Most Americans don't use their passports. Why? After the money factor, many don't desire to travel. Most of you think that other than Western Europe, and Japan, the rest of the world is a third world latrine. How many of you can name the nations that are regional military powers in Africa? Are you even aware that Nigeria has an airforce, or do you still believe the crap told to you on tv?
You have too many people being comfortable lies and stereotypes. Never seeing if they are absolutely or even partially true. I digress.

Your knowledge of other faiths depends on formal education, curiosity and respect for others. If one doesn't respect another nation or group of people, one won't study anything beyond superficial propaganda, if at all.

(I also wonder where these pollsters truly get their participants. No one has ever polled me for anything.)

He answered in a way that doesn't make Christians look ignorant or looney. We have enough of those walking around. Very Christ-like.

In college my roommate asked me to remove my Buddha statues. I'm not a Buddhist, but they were a gift from a good friend who I would never get to see again. I asked why. She said that he mother doesn't like pagan things since they are of the devil and would destroy the stereo and shelves the statues were placed upon. This is just one example that I've encountered that shows how ignorant and intolerant black people can be towards other faiths. I know many black people who won't pick up a Bible, but will trust a religious (or cult) leader to the extent that they change their holidays and taste in art. For example, NOT celebrating Christmas, Halloween, Easter/Resurrection Day or whatever it's called today. I know people who have removed masks and statues from Benin from their homes because Passa Chicken Wing says it's voo doo AND satanism. They never read the Bible, commentary of other theologians, or thought it through for themselves.

Obama also said today: "So I came to my Christian faith later in life, and it was because the precepts of Jesus Christ spoke to me in terms of the kind of life that I would want to lead -- being my brothers' and sisters' keeper, treating others as they would treat me"

Jesus never said that we should be our brothers' and sisters' keepers; Obama was apparently referring to the story of Cain and Abel.

Biblical precepts are often twisted by liberals to support socialism. Jesus was not a socialist. On the contrary, he explicitly disclaimed any political agenda. And the moral of the story in Genesis is not that we are, or should be, our brothers' keepers. Rather, the phrase comes from Cain's answer when God asks him the whereabouts of his brother Abel, whom Cain has just killed. Cain denies any knowledge, and adds the self-exculpatory question, "Am I my brother's keeper?" The point of the story is not that Cain was responsible for looking after Abel, like an Old Testament Nancy Pelosi. Cain was condemned not for failing to keep watch over his brother, but for killing him.

I do not want Barack Obama to be my "keeper"; I want him to be my President.

  53. Hey CHILL with calling Long's supporters naive or stupid or whatever. If you met EL or ever been to his service, this would be one of the hardest things for you to believe. Long has done some great things and now we're learning he's done some cruel acts as well. There's no room to attack the congregation. Those boys aren't total victims. They enjoyed the attention, cars, trips, and money. They're just upset they've been cheated on. Sounds like the same thing women do, when a man cheats. Take dat azz to court. At 16 I chased girls. If a man would've approached me at that time, I would tell my mom/dad so he'd get his azz kicked. Matter of fact I would've made him a eunic myself. They didn't so, they knew what they were doing.

I'm not here to defend EL, but the guy is captivating and he's done so much for the community, which makes it harder to believe what we're hearing. Please be sensitive to others in this turmultous time. This is almost like saying the Son of God was sleeping with Mary Magdeline.

So for you to attack his followers is ignorant and insensitive, keep the attention on EL not his followers. I'm sure they'll open their eyes. We're not dumb and blind down here in Atlanta. If they were truly christian then, they'll have to forgive him. It may be the end of New Birth though.

Personally, I'm totally shocked and upset to hear the news. I too enjoyed his services and I've worked with him. Last week we were reminded that he's just a man. That's the real story here. We try to make people into images of God, but we're only human. EL and any other person on this earth sins. It's just very dissappointing to see someone with so much potential fall so hard and decieve so many. Oh well, I'll keep reading my bible and trusting God and myself.

Well I think it is absolutely plausible, and this poll vindicates her and others like her.

The more people study and try to learn the bible, the more confused they seem to become about the true purpose of religion.

BTW, I don't think all church going people are uneducated goobers. I think there is another study (I wish I could find the link) that said that a much larger number of professionals go to church than those who don’t. I am pretty sure that Bishop Eddy's church has a lot of professionals among the 25,000 or so who attend.

Still, I think it's important for folks to keep studying their bibles, quran, tripitaka, veda, tanakh or whatever. Don't just blindly follow. Hell the people preaching to you are always studying.

His introduction to religion came through islam, in which he was immersed from the ages of 6 to 12, the years he lived in Indonesia, an islamic nation.

No one escapes the influences of his environment in those most formative years of 6 to 12.

During that period, a person absorbs his world but lacks the power to judge it. Hence, a dyed-in-the-wool state develops. A person believes what is thrust on him in those days and carries the residue of those beliefs forever.

Obama began attending Christian churches probably when he met Michelle and he saw the benefits of a little church-going.

He spent 20 years listening to Reverend Wright. That's a bad sign. Wright is obviously a disciple of Louis Farrakhan and Wright's Trinity Church is obviously Nation-of-Islam lite masquerading as a Christian operation.

Therefore, by electing Obama, the US has come its closest to electing a non-Christian to the presidency. Unfortunately, by making this mistake, we've put a lapsed muslim in charge.

Given the failures of Obama's initiatives and his willingness to appease muslim terrorist leaders around the world, it's clear voters made a mistake. Even Democrats are acknowledging their horror at discovering the size of their error.

Anyway, Obama is not -- in any formal sense -- a Christian. There's no evidence he "converted" to Christianity. More likely he simply began attending services.

On the other hand, he's not a muslim in any formal sense either. Moreover, clearly he's wary of Judaism and, like all muslims, he detests Israel.

All in all, he's Jimmy Carter the second.

Still, I think it's important for folks to keep studying their bibles, quran, tripitaka, veda, tanakh or whatever. Don't just blindly follow. Hell the people preaching to you are always studying.

Don't blindly follow? Please. Only Christianity and Judaism have room for critics. But even the Judeo-Christian world has more than a fair share of dogmatists.

On the other hand, islam as the ultimate dogmatic religion/political doctrine. The Koran is presented as the absolute and incontestable word of their crazy god. No dissent or disagreement permitted.

The absoluteness is the chief reason the muslim world is the primitive, non-technical backwater that it is.

  61. maria,

Oh. Okay, Obama spent only FIVE years immersed in a muslim culture.

Ages 6 to 11. Yeah, that changes everything.

No one escapes those early influences. Psychologists and psychiatrists have built huge practices on trying to rid people of the forces that shaped them from ages 6 to 11.

During those years we are defenseless against most psychological influences. Obama had plenty of traumas during that period of his life.

His 6-to-11 years were troubled, partly because it appears his mother was a nut. No one ever escapes the impact of a nutty mother.

PilotX said: "1. either there is a god and it allows so much tragedy in this world (babies starving or being blown up by mines) or there is no go and the universe is a random event."

A few years ago, I decided to let God and religion go for sanity and inner peace reasons. I just want to be a "fair", peaceful and respectful person to others, hope for it in return and go about my peaceful business.

If I have to believe in this "God" as he/she/it is presented in the bible, I would have no choice but to direct my anger and disappoints at this entity for all the suffering, personal tragedies and imbalanced hardships I see decent people go through in this world. Is this called "love" and "goodness"?

Maybe "humanity" and our entire universal existence is some sort of osmosis. Maybe some sort of living fungi growing on a small rock in the woods, or simply a microbe mishap of something bigger than what we could never intellectually process - therefore shit happens. And I can see how someone could easily try to tie that into God and Christianity being the bigger something. Whatever.

I can't stand hypocrisy, unprovoked suffering and blatant unfairness. I can't stand to see humanity suffer in this way. If there is a superior being, either we really are truly insignificant fungus unnoticeably surviving on their moldy floor, or they themselves are blatantly bias, spiteful or playing us as like a chess game. And of course, in the hypocritical minds of most religion zealots, I'm now officially crazy and evil for thinking such mendacity.

  66. Field,
You raise a great question and it is true that many people and Christians have an issue with religion/Christianity based on their life's situation or events such as the Eddie long sex scandal.

As a Christian I "was stunned and saddened. I felt an immediate and profound sense of loss, as if there had been another death in the family" when the news broke on Eddie Long. But it did not waiver my faith. I have personally experienced tragedies and set backs in the past FIVE YEARS but I’ve prevailed! With that being said I still believe!

The one thing that I fear is when state of affairs such as Obama and Eddie Long hit the media it would raise questions and comments such as these causing people to question or even turn from their faith and religion as a hold. One thing people and Christians have to realize God often times don’t make sense however faith has to prevail. Yes there will be days of confusion and questioning but one has to recognize you don't worship man (preacher) but worship God. So many get it twisted by putting all their faith and love in a man as if he is the genie in the bottle granting all wishes. This thought and belief causes a disillusionment of Christianity which leads to people bailing out doubting and even mocking it.

Are you asserting the blacks who commit the majority of NY City murders are the most religious among us?

Murder rising at alarming rate, sending waves of fear throughout NYC's most dangerous neighborhoods

BY Kerry Burke, Andrew Phillips and Jonathan Lemire

    DAILY NEWS WRITERS

    September 29th 2010

Bales for NewsThe number of people shot citywide has gone up 4.5% from a year ago, jumping to 1,374.

NYPD statistics through the first nine months of the year show the number of murders has climbed 13.2% from the same period last year. There were 341 murders at this point last year compared with 386 through Sunday, according to the most recent data available.

Cops in the 75th Precinct in East New York, Brooklyn, have investigated 23 homicides this year - the most in the city.

Cyncerae Pough, 27, who lives in the neighborhood, is not surprised. "Every night all I hear is cop cars and ambulances," said Pough, the mother of a 6-year-old girl. "I don't come out of my house if I don't have to."

Bullets have been flying over the Bronx, too. There's been an 18.3% spike in the borough.

In the 47th Precinct, which sits in the northern section of the Bronx, the number of murders is up 46.2%: Nineteen people have been killed in that precinct this year, up from 13 during the first three-quarters of 2009.

"It's horrible," said Elena Rodrigues, 25, a stay-at-home mom in Eastchester. "Way too many people have guns these days. Some people just don't have no control."

The murder rate is up 25.9% in Queens, 12.2% in Manhattan and 7.4% in Brooklyn - the borough which sports some of the city's most crime-plagued neighborhoods.

Eighteen people have been murdered in Brooklyn's 67th Precinct, unnerving longtime East Flatbush residents.

"People are not working, there are no jobs, so people are out on the street," said Karen Brown, 48, a home health aide. "You aren't even secure when you're inside your own home."

The number of people shot citywide has gone up 4.5% from a year ago, jumping from 1,315 to 1,374.

The uptick in murders comes after a year in which the city recorded 466 - the fewest number of slayings since the NYPD began keeping track in 1963.

Though the overall crime rate is down 1.5% citywide, primarily due to a 6.2% drop in grand larceny, most felony categories are up.

Rapes have increased 13.5% citywide, including a disturbing 45.1% jump in Manhattan. There have been seven rapes in Central Park this year. During the first nine months of last year, no one reported being raped in Central Park.

Maria: "Facts" from Obama's Ayers-penned autobigraphy should be verified.

Obama did spend his formative years in a muslim country. His mother however, was an atheist who raised her son to disdain (among other things) all religion.

Obama began attending church only as an adult, and only for the expressly political purpose of forging an identity that could plausibly be passed off as Black American.

He clearly does not understand the deeper aspects of Christianity, but that's OK, because most of his supporters don't either.

    Ever been to Indonesia, NS?

Tell me this, smart guy: How do Indonesian Christians spend their formative years in Indonesia, and somehow remain Christian, if it is such an oppressive Islamic environment?

As I've said before, Indonesia in religious terms is not so different to most Western nations, except Islam rather than Christianity is the dominant religion. There are a few fundamentalists stirring up shit, but the majority are secular-minded and don't really care what religion anyone else is. This is particularly true of Jakarta when Obama lived there, when militant Islam was effectively smothered by the Suharto regime.

The whole Obama-is-a-Muslim thing is so tired and false, and the only people who believe it are those who have an agenda to do so.

MSNBC, who cropped a picture of a guy at a D.C. area Tea Party rally with an AR-15 strapped to his back to hide the fact that he was Black, and used it to launch a discussion on the racist, violent undercurrent of the Tea Partiers.

"Name one major political or media figure who has forthrightly condemned the Tea Party racism or the D'Souza/Gingrich "Kenyan anti-colonialist" crapola?"

There is no Tea Party racism to denounce. D'Souza is a hack writer who caters to a limited audience. I'll bet very few people have heard of his book, and there is no compelling reason for a poltician to give it higher prominence by initiating an attack.

"Being an America citizen, why would you not be anti-colonialist?"

D'Souza's use of the term describes a specific movement that seeks redress for European colonialism, more specifically in Africa and Asia. Americans are instinctually anti-colonialist. D'Souza's thesis (which I do not buy) is that it's weird for an American President to exhibit an obsession with an issue that does not directly involve America.

That's his near decade long, relentless, gay bash. Long didn't just do what many conservative fundamentalist black preachers do and quietly twist scripture and verse to make the case that God condemns gays to eternal hell and damnation. He actively led crusades against gay marriage, and by extension gays, railed against them on his websites, in fiery sermons, loudly backed George W. Bush's federal amendment banning gay marriage, and led a slanderous march to Martin Luther King, Jr.'s gravesite to denounce gay marriage. Nobody forced banks to lend to high risk borrowers. In 2002 annual home price appreciation was 10% of more in much of the country. Greenspan lowered the fed reserve rate to the lowest point in 50 years...1%.

Many financial institutions issued large amounts of debt and invested in mortgage-backed securities believing that house prices would continue to rise and people would be able to keep up on their mortgage payments.

one major reasons Black people are "christians" is:
The experiences of one generation become the history of the next generation & the histories of several generations become the traditions of a people. AKA born into it.

Thuggish radical Andy Stern, who as head of the malignant SEIU was the #1 visitor to Obama's White House, finds himself in hot water:

"The FBI and the U.S. Labor Department are investigating prominent labor leader Andy Stern in their probe of corruption at the Service Employees International Union, according to two people who have been interviewed by federal agents."

The SEIU is a defacto wing of the democrat party. This election, SEIU is spending $44 million supporting democrat candidates.
Obama's pal Andy Stern isn't the only commie from the SEIU in trouble with the grownups — not that we would know this from the liberal establishment media. There's also Joseph Iosbaker, Chief Steward for SEIU's Local 73 in Chicago:

"Over the weekend the FBI announced that it was investigating Joseph Iosbaker for possible connections to overseas terror groups. Iosbaker and his wife Stephanie Weiner, both anti-war activists, are suspected of activities "concerning the material support of terrorism."

As usual, the media is covering for Obama's friends:

"It is interesting to note that [Iosbaker's SEIU affiliation] escaped most of Chicago's TV coverage. Michelle Gallardo of ABC 7 TV seems to have forgotten to mention the union connection, CBS channel 2 also missed this fact, WGN TV channel 9 also forgot to mention the SEIU, and Channel 5 NBC also missed it, all accidentally I'm sure."

It isn't just TV that missed this fact. The Associated Press also seems to be blind to the fact that Iosbaker is a union operative.
Fortunately we have alternative sources of information, so the public has no excuse not to keep itself sufficiently informed as to avoid catastrophic mistakes the leftist "mainstream" media would deliberately lead us into, like the 2008 elections.

It's settled now. Barack Obama has come clean on his monstrous $787 billion "stimulus" package, acknowledging that it has been a complete bust. Not that we needed BHO to admit it. Since the enactment of "porkulus," the number of Americans receiving unemployment checks jumped by nearly 2 million, while the number of Americans cashing paychecks plunged by almost 3 million. If that weren't bad enough, the U.S. economy has been handcuffed with 16 straight months of unemployment lingering above 9%. A jobs bill it was not, Mr. President. And he's finally saying as much, tacitly at least. Why else would he propose another round of multi-billion dollar expenditures to "create jobs" if his original one worked? He wouldn't need to.

My beliefs and my intellect do not conflict, if anything, my beliefs give purpose and renewed wonder to every bit of knowledge I aggregate. If I was you, I wouldn't try to quote anything that came out of Sarah's mouth. If you ask me, the both of you need to dye your hair blonde and call it a day.

And it is... the United States Virgin Islands to you, thank you very much. I bet you think its some place near Russia too.

Maria, you remind me of Rose on the Golden Girls. For the love of cheese cake, stop making yourself look like a dingbat. What does my present location, or anyone else's have to do with what they know or what they may have access to. I bet you're one of those people who think you need to actually stand in the bank line to pay your bank loan. That's why the Al Qeada and Taliban can outsmart arrogant and pompous white Americans like you who think you know it all about everybody. You can't seem to fathom there are people around the world who also know more about you than you know about yourself.

And Maria, most people who participate on this blog probably lived and traveled more places than you have, I am sure I am one of them.

"apparently you aren't aware that any company must verify that their workers are legal? and this is being stressed and enforced with all federal contractors, esp. those with stimulus funding."

That was not what I was referring to, and not all immigrants are "illegal". Your own American arrogance and condescending bigotry confuses you, this makes you no better than the things you accuse me of. Furthermore, I was focussing in respect to the individual capacities, I keep forgetting how much you process information oddly. You see Maria, while you're standing in the bank lines, there are Asian, East Indian etc. immigrants who are electronically sending a good portion of their wages/tax returns etc. out of the America to build up their home land elsewhere, they do this routinely. I am not blaming them, but this is a big aspect that also outsources American resources that many don't also fail to look at.

The Snopes account of Obama's connection to islam is almost exactly equal to my comments.

As Snopes confirmed, Obama was immersed in a muslim culture in a nation that was 90% muslim in the years he lived in it.

Moreover, according to Obama himself, there was a Koran in his house and he apparently read from it. However, inasmuch as he (and Bill Ayers) wrote his own story, he shows he has no real insight or understanding of his Indonesian years.

Meanwhile, it's notable that his mother is presented as "Ann Dunham", rather than by her full and cruel name, "Stanley Ann Dunham."

She went as far as she could to get away from the father who so desperately wanted a son.

Johmny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue" was a joke song. But its lyrics most certainly captured the anger of Stanley Ann.

  182. because english appears to be your second, or perhaps third language, let me break it down for you.

1, the conversation was about stimulus finds and where they were spent.

    2. you said: 'Far out the country by all the non-black semi-working fertile immigrants in America who do collect and send money back home."

    3. it is not news that immigrant send money back home.

    4. immigrants did not get stimulus funds.

    5. how you know what has gone in america in the 18 months since the stimulus act was passed is a mystery.

    6. it was just a convenient hook for you to spew your hatred.

everyone saw it. and sees it more every day.

  183. I think it's sad that, despite our progression as a nation, we're still at a stage where we even feel the need to ask the President what their religion is.

Religion and the separation of church and state has always been one topic of cognitive dissonance that "A-merry-ca" has struggled with since the beginning.

So the stimulus money only went to bankers and car dealerships? LOL. Not even one social, rebate, welfare program where lots of immigrants who have strong ties to their homeland also benefitted from? And remember Maria, not all immigrants are "illegal".

  191. Maria, who do you think are the people in America carrying the weight and burden of these stimulus monies? The ultra rich? The welfare queens? The poor and very growing immigrant population? Nope. You are clearly on some sort of welfare program as to why you can't see what's really going on.

But there's a hidden housing crisis that gets little or no attention—the increasingly difficult struggle of millions of people to find affordable rental units, and to pay the rent once they do find someplace to live. Their numbers are only growing as the wave of foreclosures continues.

The unraveling of the housing market is having severe consequences for the economy as a whole, with no end in sight. Almost 3 million households were in foreclosure in 2009, a 21 percent increase over 2008. Another 3 million or more homes will be foreclosed on in 2010, as the unemployment crisis drags on, and people are simply unable to afford bloated and overpriced mortgage payments.

The so-called "loan modification" programs instituted by the Obama administration have largely failed to help. The banks have no incentive to lower monthly payments and have thus created multiple obstacles for the average homeowner to overcome to even find out if they qualify.

In late August, the administration unveiled yet another program that is supposed to save homeowners—by helping homeowners who are "under water" on their mortgages and the creation of an "emergency loan homeowners bank" to help the unemployed keep their homes.

The administration is playing a shell game with people's housing debt, shifting it around without actually getting rid of it—while the big banks continue to boast profits, thanks to the infusion of taxpayer funds from the Wall Street bailout.

The end result is that millions of people are losing their homes and becoming homeless or rejoining the ranks of the tens of millions of renters and tenants across the U.S.

But while the administration has made efforts—weak ones, but efforts nonetheless—to assist homeowners, the crisis in affordable rental housing and the lack of subsidies for those who need them goes largely ignored.

Only 4.5 million renters in this country receive some level of government subsidy. That's woefully inadequate considering the tens of millions of people who struggle to keep a roof over their heads.

And the crisis for renters will only get worse as unemployment and underemployment continue, alongside rising poverty rates.

  198. Rose... I mean Maria, all I was trying to say, was that everyone focuses on the big corporations, but they are not seeing how a particular type of lying deceitful immigrant population collect various benefits and milk various stimulus aided programs just so they can send most of their earned wages out of the American country. This does not "stimulate" the American economy. These particular groups go under radar because people think of immigrants as primarily being Latin and Black.
