Oh my, it's getting ugly here in A-merry-ca. I have a confession to make: I have been blessed all of my life. I am one of the lucky ones here in A-merry-ca who has never had to depend on a government handout. But there are a lot of hard working and successful A-merry-cans who, at some point in their lives, did need a little government assistance. Families and individuals can go through rough patches, and, when they do, they might need help from a government that they have been paying taxes to all of their working lives.
Which brings me to Newt Gingrich. My man recently labeled the democratic party the party of food stamps. (Of course considering the number of A-merry-cans on food stamps right now, that might actually be a good thing for the dumbocrats. )
"It's perfectly fair to say they are earning the title of the party of food stamps," he said. "By contrast, we have historically since Ronald Reagan of 1980 been the party of job creation."
Fair enough, Newt. But what if your Reaganesque supply side policies do not create jobs? What if on their way to achieving the A-merry-can dream they go broke and hungry and might need some food stamps to get by?- A college student, or small business person who is going through a rough spell comes to mind. - What then?
Oh, that's right, they are just people. Who cares about them? It's not like they are foreign owned conglomerates who can give the republicans and their lap dog organizations much needed money.
Yep, just people. Bad stuff happens to just people sometimes. Like poor Gene Cranick of Obion County, Tennessee. Seems Gene forgot to pay a $75 annual fee and it cost him big time.
"A smoldering rage may be all that remains after Gene Cranick's home burned to the ground last week in Obion County, Tennessee.
Firefighters are usually the bold "veni, vidi, vici" sort, but those from neighboring South Fulton could only say "veni, vidi." They came. They watched. That's it.
Cranick lives outside of the city limits and he admits that he forgot to pay a $75 annual service fee that would have provided him with fire protection. Firefighters wouldn't lift a finger, much less the hoses that might have saved the house.
The fire reportedly started in some barrels outside. As the flames crept closer to the home, Cranick says he offered to pay whatever it would take. The plea fell on deaf ears. Hours later, the home was gone.
So were three dogs and a cat.
"They coulda' been saved if they put water on it. But they didn't do it," Cranick told MSNBC.
The South Fulton firefighters did show up and managed to save a neighbor's field. The neighbor had paid the fee. But they would provide no heroics for the Cranicks. A local news report shows them climbing back on their trucks, flames still dancing over what was once the family's home."

Of course, folks like Glen Beckkk and other wingnuts thought that this was funny. You see, in their A-merry-ca, when one is not serious enough about his or her individual responsibilities they must be punished. So the Cranicks got their just deserts; they lost their home. Unfortunately Beckkk didn't get his; he still has one.
Mr. Field, I've noticed that you never give H/T to anons who give you links to stories. Two posts ago, I personally gave you a link to about that house burning down.
ReplyDeleteWhat does an Anon have to do to get some recognition here? This is a blog where the blogger goes racism chasing--yet I am discriminated against. I get no respect.
Welcome to the real America Mr. Cranick. Not to sound harsh but we've lnown about poll taxes and lack of police/emergency services for a loooooong time. Flava Flav told you that back in '89. The GOP and the capitalist er I mean corportist Ayn Rand types who believe in this fantasyland called the free market think there is nothing wrong with this type of situation. It will be too late when we notice that what is good for business is not necessarily good for workers and citizens. We already have 4 corporatists sitting on the Supreme Court and filling both chambers of the congress. This story can only have one end if we stay on the path we're on. Big business runs amerikkka and the GOP has helped them do so by demonizing government, the only institution powerful enough to challenge them. I fear corporations moreso than the government because if I don't like they way the government is doing something we can fire them ala the Tea Parties but if corporations are in charge what am I going to do othe rthan not buy that company's products, oh yeah I'm making a huge difference with my personal boycott of Wallmart. Wake up people, you may not like the government but at least you can change it every 2-6 years and make your voice heard.
ReplyDeleteField, I am the anon that you, LAA, RottenKid, and Hathor made fun of me because I am poor and use food stamps. Remember me?
ReplyDeleteNow, you have the audacity to criticize Newt Gingrich for what he said about food stamps? Don't be a hypocrite.
I hope at the end of your long lives that each one of your caskets are made out of food stamps. That way, it won't take the worms very long to get to your black asses.
Bob Dole, whose parents had to rent out their home and live in the basement during the depression to make it, and had known hunger then, always had a soft spot for the Food Stamp program and quietly protected it from the Ag committee and Maj/Min Leaders offices. But then, he'd be a RINO now wouldn't he?
ReplyDeleteI heard the guy whose house burned to the ground had a son who went down to the fire station and slugged the fire chief and then got arrested. Maybe someone's son ought to slug Newt.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, Yep the Republicans hate poor people. But somehow they manage to get millions of poor people and middle class people to vote against their interests by voting Republican.

Read the whole story, the guy built a house that was way outside the fire district, they told him years ago that they couldnt service without a small fee of 75 a year. He told them to screw off, yet all his neighbors paid. So there you have it.
Guess what, Obamacare is already like this, its failed and will cost more money then we have because people wont pay or will be exempted from the fees funding healthcare for all. Its already happening and most dont have to pay under the plan until they need it? Think that will work? Nope!.
Welcome to reality, when the money taken from producers and gets redistributed to non producers runs out. Its gone people, its gone!
America is not a nation of Christ followers as the GOP, baggers and wingnuts like to claim. Mr. Cranick's situation is just more proof that America has far too many psychopaths, morally bankrupt citizens and leaders elected by them. Topped off with too many just plain stupid people.
ReplyDeleteThis pay to spray plan could have killed children, if trapped in the house, and neighbors, if they forgot to pay too or the fire spread rapidly...
after all, city hall, NEVER EVER makes billing errors, right????
They used this poor man as an example. The intelligent thing to do would have been to bill him directly after the fire was put out. Or even better, just make fire service costs as part of property tax. MANDATORY.
That's right, far too many stupid people fail to see the need for that. We're moving on to teabagger America.
Beckkk is happier than a pig in slop over this man's misfortune, claiming that if the fire were put out, he'd be leeching off of the neighbors who paid their fee.
If it means saving lives and stopping the spread of fires, and just helping my neighbor in a real emergency, I'd do the Christ-like thing and would be glad for the alleged sponging.
Beckkk likes to talk about the founding fathers ceaselessly. He can borrow my son's Ben Franklin biography for kids (3rd grade level, so Beckkk should be able to read and comprehend it.) and discover the compassionate and safety reasons the fire department was formed.
I was a hungry kid who survived into adulthood largely because of food stamps. My mom knew how to make beef tounge, turkey drumsticks, bacon ends or hamhocks into dinner for 4 growing kid, and she knew how to make beans, potatos, lard, cornbread and flour feed us for the half the month with when those meat scraps were just a memory too. This is the first business of government.
ReplyDelete"Ok Anon, you are anonymously recognized by another anon. Feel better? Heres to the Anon that...what was it you did again?"
ReplyDeleteevery now and then there is an anon who just doesn't get it.
An FD's refusal to fight fire when on site has to be an aberration. Is it fair to "make hay" based on that?
ReplyDeleteIn my town, firefighters have pride and purpose. They fight fire to serve the people and don't worry about the "client's" potential tax delinquencies.
I'm guessing it's much the same in the rest of the country, and it's unfair to paint all jurisdictions and firefighters with the same brush, eh?
I saw this fellow who's property was allowed to burn and even lite his neighbors "covered" property before the fire dept responded because of an unpaid $75 assessment on Olberman last night. KO just couldn't bring himself to do the same thing to the poor guy that the local kkkrackers did and use him as an example by linking this to the general kkkrackersphere retrenchment movement. Whatever dude, I'll still give you .50 on the $1.00, my offer is still open. On the real, 2 weeks ago I was at Food Lion picking up a case of beer and 2 packs of Nathans Hot dogs(the best)and in front of me were the broke Richmond version of "The Clampetts", all 5 of them. They had their little food, Oodles of Noodles, Hoho's, frozen pizzas, chips, etc.. you get the picture and lo and behold "Papa Clampett" pulls out the food stamp card, pays for his groceries and head on out the door. I pay for my items and head on out the door. I go to my car and parked next to me were "The Clampetts" loading all their newly purchased items. I popped my trunk threw my case of beer and hot dogs in there. They finished loading their SUV, closed the door and Viola! A "Don't tread on me" sticker - Fresh from the factory (We had a tea party rally here recently). I shouldn't assume but it's kind of hard too. I guess it's OK if "they" get food stamps but not "others". But I digress, I shouldn't have assumed. From the hood to the good, it's all the same. The 1st thing people do is run to the Government when they need help, you know, that "safety net"

Yeah but dude pays TAXES - federal, state and local. Why should he pay for services that are supposed to provided with his tax dollars? I can guarantee you he helps pay the salary of the Fire Chief, the Police Cheif, etc..Again why does he have to come out of pocket on top of his taxes he pays?
rttnkid, "The 1st thing people do is run to the Government when they need help, you know, that "safety net""
ReplyDeleteDon't worry. that's all about to change come November 2. All of those food stamp handlers won't be getting stamps anymore. if you can't work, you don't get shit. and that's the way it should be.

ReplyDeleteHe pays property taxes to another county without a fire department. Get it? If he wanted another county WITH a fire department to service his area, the fee is $75/yr. That is why his neighbors paid but he was too cheap and stupid to pay.

ReplyDeleteI really wish I could receive food stamps :) Where I live you have to have an income under 20K to apply. Or a bunch of crumb snatchers, but still with an income no more than 25K or so. They would laugh my ass out the building.
Field, there is something I've been contemplating about more lately. As we all know the middle class is growing and stretching. In my opinion, and generally speaking, the poor, the rich, and the upper middle class are not suffering as much as the "lower middle class" (at least where I live in the USVI). The lower middle class are the ones who sit right in that catch 22 groove. They make too much to get subsidizes and handouts, yet they don't make enough to get the mortgages or the benefits that people claim the Obama admin is putting in place for the "middle class" criteria.
Example where I live: House and land is more expensive, the cost of living is also higher than you US mainland, yet the incomes are even lower.
There are newly built "low income" subsidized housing apartments, the rent is like $770 for a two bedroom (does not even include water and electricity). Here's the catch, your household income can't be no more than $24K annual. LOL. The lower middle class are still screwed here. (Furthermore, for that kind of income restriction, anyone making 24K and lower are still going to be struggling to pay that rent and utilities (my electricity bill alone is almost $500 a month). But hey, that's the USVI for ya, where the black politicians are lining their pockets while they allow the corporate crooks from all over to come down and exploit the poor blacks).
Oh and there are "low income" single homes being built also for "low income" people starting at $250K-$300K. But your household income have to be no less than $80K annual. LOL. This is "low income", and of course the lower middle class folks are screwed as well.
You see what I mean by that groove?
Sorry to bore you guys with island politics, but I suspect many places in the US mainland are seeing this trend.
(Oh Hillary, why have we forsaken you?)
He probably thought like you..."eff'em." Well, they felt the same about him. Like I said, karma WILL catch up to you. I am sure with an attitude and mind like yours, you know a LOT about bad karma.

I'm Libra, we own Karma, no worries here, with that said, fair enough, he didn't pay in his part to the county in a "timely" but that still doesn't constitute the fire dept to let his house burn down when he literally offered them $500 on the spot! What if grandma was in there getting cooked? No, dudes' Karma is gonna be good BUT those that sat and watched his house burned down or at least had the power to approve of getting the firemen to the job - their Karma is jacked.
I got to thinking. This is the way I see it..These "firemen" sat there and literally watch a Man and his Family lose everything. Now you can't tell me not one "firemen" didn't put himself in that Man's shoes??!! To lose everything. Those "firemen" let me down as a Man, a fellow Man. Call me an asshole but if I were one those "firemen", I would have broke ranks because there's no way I could have watched that happen.
ReplyDeleteI love how people use religion as a weapon against you to make themselves feel better about themselves. Government Bennies its all a racket... yea I was down that road also but I knew the game. If I let the System get me trapped then I am the slave to the State. In someways the State had got this nigger by his toe however my mind will never be locked down... I'll just adapt and overcome. I remember the blacks dancing in the Detroit streets for the "Obama Stash" despite is was really coming from Lansing than Washington however ignorant as they want "us" to be its only our selves to blame for putting rimz on the Chevy than saving up for our kids college fund, hell how many of us are even reading to our kids or showing them the newspaper (even if it is slanted its good to keep up with current events). You can call me a WalMart Republican, yea I'm not JP Morgan but I'm the king of my castle. Give me cheap fuel for my Truck and ATV's, keep the Lakes clean so I can go fishing and get the mad cow out my beef then its all good. Yea I can't forget the Arts however as the Government needs to get out of our bedrooms (Yes Gays should marry and adopt, two gay dads is not going to turn me gay, I'm still want to find that special girl in w/ hiking boots and Nalgene in hand)... back to the task at hand! Get out my wallet and truly help the folks whom need help. The real folk on the Government Tit are any Government Unionized Civil Service Job or State Employee whom is behind the "cost" of doling out that social service. To the Food Stamp to the Free Bus Pass... MTA and COTA (Columbus Ohio) people started to bitch when the kids couldn't use there bus passes to go beyond school and home with the rationale "some have after school jobs to get to" and I'm like "well the (bleeping) work for crying out out, pay the (bleeping) fair like the rest of us." Really where does it stop because I doubly the European Union or China is going to bail out the USA when we go no shit broke.
ReplyDeleteAFSCME anyone? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3mw49mk_x0
p.s. for the people whom think so called "white folks" that are out there that vote against there self interest have you walked in the shoes of a Appalachian for example? I think not. I give most illegals some credit, they will get on that grind for less that shit pay while blacks are waiting for the next Government Bennie in the name of reparations

Would they have at least done something if there were people inside? The entire thing foolish and sad indeed, doesn't make sense. But we can count on PETA for this one... (then again, what color fur were those dogs and cats?) I don't trust PETA either.
Btw, when I asked about the color fur of the pets etc... I wasn't insinuating this unfortunate situation was about race. I just wanted to clear that up for those on this blog who seem to comprehend things oddly.
ReplyDeleteJibreel Riley,
ReplyDeleteThe entire budget of any of those programs you mention including the Civil Servants pails in comparison to even one low level contractor in the Justice or Defense Departments. Do the research.

ReplyDeleteYeah, by karmic law, they got it coming. The terrible thing about karma is you don't know 'how' it manifests. But it's going to hurt just like that man felt watching his house burn down.
what if he owed back fees for 10 years? he would be short. Besides, he was in Tennessee and those Republican hillbillies don't play when it comes to money. They can be some stubborn spiteful boys.
Bottomline: he should have paid instead of ignoring the fire dept. for years. They probably took that as Cranick giving them the finger year after year. So the Cranicks had already made an enemy with the county. In those tiny ass towns everybody knows everybody.
Payback is a bitch.
Instead of letting his house burn over $75, put the fire out and send the homeowner an invoice for services rendered. If he doesn't pay, attach a lien on his home. At least then he'll have a fighting chance to save his home, instead of being made to watch it burn.
ReplyDelete"It's perfectly fair to say they are earning the title of the party of food stamps," he said. "By contrast, we have historically since Ronald Reagan of 1980 been the party of job creation."
These days, the job creation is happening overseas.

ReplyDeleteIf you lived in a poor town and your job depended on the survival of your family and you, you might not put your family and job in jeopardy over a 'deadbeat' who wouldn't pay $75/yr for the services of the fire dept.
It's a small town and I bet those firemen knew the Cranicks had not paid for years. Bad feelings about the Cranicks probably had been building for years.
But I agree with you about the karma they accumulated watching that house burn down and doing nothing. They violated a a karmic divine law: "Do not do to others what you would hate done to you."

That would be to simple. Nice try though.
I'm not even going to get started on the laws that govern a "Township" when it came to the 75 Dollar Fire Service Fee from the same folks whom bitch when the Cities they live in start charging a fee for trash pick up... yea if you live almost hours away from many basic services you just might be assessed a fee for Emergency services. Yes are there communities in America w/o fire and police protection: Yes and its not Philadelphia... many of these communities are rurally or ex-burbs (i.e. townships) what was once "farmland" now some trac-home or subdivision that more likey was feeding off the nearest muni's Emergency Services... do we know what kind of deal was even set up? Even at least there was some type of agreement vs just rolling Firehouse close in Phila w/ a paid (union... holy shit) fire company. Even the Fire Company that responded in the Tennessee case was volunteer... now how many of you able body Negroes are willing to "volunteer" at the local fire hall (i'll hold my breath)?
ReplyDeleteField, "Of course, folks like Glen Beckkk and other wingnuts thought that this was funny. You see, in their A-merry-ca, when one is not serious enough about his or her individual responsibilities they must be punished."
ReplyDeleteFirst, YOU think it's funny to spell Beck's last name with a couple of extra "k'" attached to it. Some of us don't.
Secondly, in A-merry-ca, in this case, it had nothing to do with punishment, it had to do with "consequences" for avoiding payment for fire protection. Any "responsible" ADULT who cares about his family would make sure it was protected from fire.
When an adult neglects their responsibilities, there is NO punishment, but there might be a consequence, such as having no fire dept to cover your home from another county.
Frankly, that was a stupid move on the home owner. And no, the county "outside" Mr. Cranick could not bill him because they have no jurisdiction or permission to be on his property in the first place. In other words, in Tenn. your $75 payment allows the fire dept to come on your property to put out a fire.
It's real simple in Tenn: No payment, No fire dept...it's that simple. But I realize that you progressive liberals will make a lot more out of it. Hell, even P&G will cut your electricity off for non-payment.
Well, at least you can't blame Mr. Beck for being a racist on this one. That must be very frustrating for you and your followers. Maybe you will have to re-evaluate your misunderstanding of Beck? and Palin? and O'Donnell? and Paladino? and other Tea Party members?
You should, because they are going to be in Congress next year.

ReplyDeleteI hear from these clowns 5-6 times a DAY!
Can you please drop a dime?
A lot of railing so far about the plight of Mr. Cranick has focused on another vicitm of heartless corparatism. But the truth is this was a government agency who let the house burn down.
ReplyDeleteAny business would have realized the PR nightmare that would ensue and would have fought the fire. At a minimum, they would have negotiated a price (fire sale price) right there and made some money.
But the government instead chose to punish the nonconformist as an example. Face it: you statists are all for this when it comes to other "government" services, like say healthcare. Better get ready to get burned.

ReplyDeleteYou're going completely insane now.
It wasn't Obama who cut funding to Head Start, the Child Care Fund, Social Services Block Grants and Low Income Home Energy Assistance.
That was BUSH.
As a matter of Bush's 2006 budget proposed eliminating Head Start altogether.
This after doubling the unemployment rate and the deficit during his first term in office.
And giving the rich a tax cut.
Obama initiate the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act - Part of which provides $5 billion to fund Head Start and other child intitiatives.
And the Childrens Health Intitiative - Extending Health Insurance Coverage to poor children.
Bushsquat had vetoed this twice.
I don't really know what motivates your obvious hatred of Obama but it's making you look downright ridiculous.

Obama's Scheme to Kill Public Housing and Give the Land to Banks
A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford
"Obama would entrust the fates of millions of poor people to the tender mercies of the same criminal-minded class that has destroyed a generation and more of Black homeowners."
President Obama's greatest domestic imperative is the transfer of public wealth and resources to the private sector. He moved tens of trillions of dollars to Wall Street in the guise of rescuing the economy. Hundreds of billions in public funds are scheduled for transfer to private insurance corporations over the next decade or so, masquerading as a health care plan. His support for corporate-backed charter schools and other so-called public-private partnerships has dramatically escalated the privatization of education in the United States. Obama calls it a "Race to the Top." Now, the Obama administration is serving up to corporate vultures the nation's dwindling stock of public housing, with bankers as the ultimate beneficiaries.
The plan is slick, but easy enough to see through - like the president, himself. Dubbed the Transforming Rental Assistance initiative, or TRA, the scheme would allow banks and other speculators to mortgage public housing, and then raise the rents to ten percent above market value. The federal government would make up the difference, pumping the people's money directly into Wall Street accounts. Eventually, of course, the feds will halt or cut back payments, and the properties will revert to the bankers, who will sell them to developers and kick out the tenants. This is gentrification and urban displacement on a gargantuan scale - brought to you by the First Black President

ReplyDeleteBarack Obama's Katrina anniversary remarks reveal a president who rails against bureaucracy while ignoring the savage race and class warfare at the heart of the (ongoing) disaster. The right of the Black poor to exist is at issue, but that's way outside Obama's radar.
Katrina’s Legacy: Poor Blacks Have No Right to “Be”
by BAR executive editor Glen Ford
“Black people's perceived right to 'place' was snuffed out, along with more than 1,000 lives.”
On the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, President Obama used his Saturday radio address to sum up his understanding of the lesson to be derived from the disaster inflicted on predominantly Black New Orleans. “No more turf wars,” he said. What a bloodless analysis of the forced and – it is becoming clearer by the year – permanent exile of much of the population of a quintessentially Black American city!
President Obama is constitutionally incapable of recognizing the central crime of Katrina – the corralling and subsequent dispersal of the poor to who-cares-where – because he is bent on perpetuating the crime. Thus, in his radio address, Obama cited New Orleans' status as the nation's fastest growing city, sounding for all the world like a mayor who has just bulldozed the last “blighted” neighborhood adjacent to downtown. Then, with awesome banality, the president reminded listeners that “with every tragedy comes the chance of renewal.”
Renewal for whom? Turf wars over what? The Black poor have been displaced from this conversation, exiled beyond the pale of national policy consideration
http://blackagendareport.com/?q=print/content/new-orleans-black-activists-denounce-obama-and-shame-misleadership-class
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to making President Obama accountable for his own wars, his own corporate pandering, his own trillion-dollar bank bailouts, the Black misleadership class becomes mute. But poor people's activists in New Orleans had no problem denouncing the president's housing policies, which ensure that "fat cats like Warren Buffett and huge private banking institutions will inherit the nation's public housing properties."
New Orleans Black Activists Denounce Obama and Shame Misleadership Class
A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford
"Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and trade union leaders denounced unemployment, home foreclosures and war in general, but did not dare to hold the corporate Democrat in the White House responsible for any of it."
In New Orleans and elsewhere across the country, the poor who are evicted from public housing are expected to disperse, get out of the way of corporate development that serves the needs of other people, and be quiet. But this weekend, the former residents of the St. Bernard project refused to scatter and be silent. They had earlier built a tent encampment nearby, called Survivors' Village [9]. Now they denounced President Obama and his friend, Warren Buffett, the multi-billionaire hedge fund baron who is developing the site of their former homes under a new name, Columbia Parc, for a new class of residents.
"The former residents of the St. Bernard project refused to scatter and be silent."
The Obama administratin has taken the anti-public housing policies of Bush and previous presidents to a new level, with a plan to abandon any federal commitment to building and maintaining housing for the poor. Instead, fat cats like Warren Buffett and huge private banking institutions will inherit the nation's public housing properties. In New York City, the Citigroup bankers now own a piece of 13 public housing projects [10] - a taste of what Obama has in store for what remains of America's public housing stock.
http://uhurunews.com/story?resource_name=obama-s-plan-for-home-owners-no-help-for-black-latino-or-poor-communities
ReplyDeleteObama's Plan for Home Owners
- No help for African, Latino and poor communities
Barack Obama's recent plan to bail out 9 Million Home Owners falls far short of coming anywhere near the current need.
So who are these 9 million who will be helped? The claims made by the current administration that relief is on the way obscures the reality that few of those most in need will find any relief from the Obama Plan.
In particular few in the African community, which has been the target of more subprime loans than any other community, will benefit from these programs.
A careful look at the plan reveals who benefits and who will not. It also reveals how the Obama plan protects the interests of the banks at the direct expense of great suffering and loss of income in the black community.
Far from ending the predatory practices which have ravaged African communities in the U.S. the Obama plan continues to support additional profits earned through criminal activity by predatory lenders.

http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2010/sep/22/guest-column-foreclosure-fallout-slams-black/
ReplyDeleteBeyond the concentration of foreclosures in African-American neighborhoods, there is apparently a marked difference in dispositions of foreclosed properties based on racial demographics. An analysis of Wells Fargo foreclosed properties since 2001 by the University of Memphis' Center for Community Building & Neighborhood Action reveals that in predominantly white neighborhoods (80 percent or more Caucasian households) 71 percent of the foreclosed properties ultimately became owner-occupied residences, while in predominantly African-American neighborhoods (80 percent or more African-American) only 34 percent are now owner-occupied. The shift in percentage of owner-occupied homes to rental units also has a significant adverse effect on property values, quality of life and wealth.
A recent New York Times article about the effect of foreclosures on African-Americans in Memphis cited a study by the Economic Policy Institute showing that as of the end of 2009 median white wealth had dipped 34 percent to $94,600 while median black wealth had dropped by 77 percent to $2,100. According to another study by the Center for Responsible Lending, the loss of wealth related to foreclosures in "communities of color" may be as great as $350 billion, an amount greater than the costs paid by Gulf Coast states in response to Hurricane Katrina.
No Obama Budget Freeze for Prisons
ReplyDelete— By James Ridgeway
http://motherjones.com/mojo/2010/02/no-obama-budget-freeze-prison-nation
In the nation with the world’s highest incarceration rate, amid talk of dangerously high deficits and budget freezes, the White House proposes dramatically increasing spending on prisons.
A newly released report from the Justice Policy Institute, titled "The Obama Administration’s 2011 Budget: More Policing, Prisons, and Punitive Policies," analyzes the priorities reflected in the president’s overall spending plans for the Department of Justice in FY 2011 (which begins on October 1, 2010):
The President’s proposed FY2011 Department of Justice (DOJ) budget asks for $29.2 billion. This is on top of $4 billion provided to DOJ through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA), much of which will continue to fund activities through 2011 and beyond. Although the budget has some specific allocations for juvenile justice that it had removed last year, it still reduces spending on juvenile justice programs, while allocating hundreds of millions to hire or retain police officers….and increasing federal prison spending.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Greater Cleveland has lost 1 out of 10 construction jobs in the past year, one of the worst rates in the nation, a report showed Tuesday.
The 3,700 lost jobs represented more than a third of the construction jobs lost in Ohio, where only the Columbus area gained jobs from June 2009 to June 2010, according to the Associated General Contractors of America, which issued a report based on U.S. Labor Department statistics.
Ohio ranked 21st of 50 states and the District of Columbia with a 5 percent loss of construction jobs, compared with 7 percent nationally.

Naomi Wolf: Unfortunately it is more relevant. Bush legalized torture, but Obama is legalizing impunity. He promised to roll stuff back, but he is institutionalizing these things forever. It is terrifying and the left doesn’t seem to recognize it.
Those signs are offensive. If only the Holocaust was just about imposing health care on my people. Obama has done things like Hitler did. Let me be very careful here. The National Socialists rounded people up and held them without trial, signed legislation that gave torture impunity, and spied on their citizens, just as Obama has. It isn’t a question of what has been done that Hitler did. It’s what does every dictator do, on the left or the right, that is being done here and now. The real fight isn’t left or right but between forces of democracy across the spectrum and the forces of tyranny.
I’m not worried that tomorrow there will be a battalion outside your Greenwich Village apartment. I’m worried about things like the McCain Liberman bill that would define enemy belligerents so loosely it would include Americans, which is just like Stalin and Hitler and Mussolini. If Obama tries people with military tribunals, setting that precedent, that is what a military state does. That is what martial law looks like. From a constitutional point of view Bush passing through the Patriot Act is no worse than Obama renewing it.

Earlier this month, Congress approved Obama's nomination of Catherine Woteki, the USDA's undersecretary for research, education, and economics. The appointment drew little attention in the press, including the sustainable-food blogosphere. That's surprising, because Woteki comes to her new position after a five-year stint as global director of scientific affairs for Mars, Inc., the multinational junk-food giant.

Fenty lost the black vote - and the mayoral race last month - to City Council member Vincent Gray after black residents accused Fenty of looking out for big business and not addressing the needs of D.C.'s black citizens.
“What has taken a toll is the perception that the president has consistently seemed more concerned about the needs and interests of those who are already well off, who are hostile to policies that would help working people and ethnic minorities, and who in many cases would like nothing better than to see Obama fail,” Bob Herbert wrote recently in The New York Times.
“Many blacks are unhappy that Obama hasn't been more forceful in the fight to create jobs,” Herbert wrote. “And there is disappointment over the dearth of black faces in high-profile posts in the administration.”
And if Obama asked black Americans if they are better off today than they were two years ago, how would they respond?

hobama has made ALL worse...even racism
ReplyDeletehe is playing gray and dogging blacks!
shame!!!
Second, the simple fact of Obama’s technical blackness – a sufficient trigger to white racial fears in and of itself – has made his administration if anything more reluctant than a white Democratic presidency would have been to tackle racial inequality and injustice in any kind of relevant policy way. Obama and his team know he barely survived or overcame the simple fact of being black in the last presidential primary and election cycle in white majority America. They have hardly shown any eagerness to press racial buttons any further with real policy actions against any of the large number of racist institutional and societal structures, practices, and policies that continue to plague American society. For much the same reason, the Obama White House was remarkably cowed in response to ridiculous right-wing racist campaigns against: (A) the brilliant black Obama appointee and short-lived “Green Jobs Czar” Van Jones (let go quickly by the White House after the proto-fascist neo-McCarthyite lunatic Glenn Beck absurdly labeled Jones a “Black Nationalist” and “Communist”); (B) the minority-based activist group ACORN; and (C) former black Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod, instantly fired by Obama’s Agricultural Secretary Tom Vilsack after Republican hacks threw up transparently falsified video nonsense purporting to show that she was an anti-white racist.
Fifth, the first black president’s service to concentrated wealth has reinforced some working class whites’ “backlash” tendency (encouraged as usual by right wing activists and media) to associate black equality and Civil Rights (however imperfectly and deceptively identified with Obama) with upper-class elitism and privilege, not with the struggle of the multiracial Many against the privileged Few. Combined with the strong identification that many white liberals and blacks in general feel with the President, Obama’s cold corporatism encourages the so-called Thomas Frank Kansas effect: the ease with which the regressive, repressive, authoritarian, messianic-militarist, sexist and racist right is able to pick off and pick up white working class recruits and votes and to channel white populist rage in ways that are contrary to the interests of working people and the common good
Is Barack Obama Bad for Racial Justice?
by Paul Street
“There is curiously little to be concretely gained by most black Americans, and more perhaps to be lost from electing a bourgeois, money-captive president who happens to be black.”

ReplyDeleteIT USE TO BE A PLACE OF REFUGE
From the last two threads to the present day, Alicia has posted the word HOBAMA approximately 127 times. This is some disturbing s*#t! Her ritualistic compulsion is not about blogging at all. There is no respect here for Field or the blog. Neither is there a real sense of political debate. As others have expressed here, it is indicative of a psychotic. Her ranting makes her appear as though she is suffering from Undifferentiated Schizophrenia or Narcissistic Personality disorder.
Her vicious jealousy of Obama is also deeply telling. It is definitely sexual.
Maybe the drug addled Freud was right! Perhaps's there are some women who envy a man's d#*k. It sure looks like it in Alicia case. I think she wants to be Obama. She wants to be tall, beautiful, svelte, and brilliant. She wants to be the object of desire for millions of women. But she can never be Obama. She’s too insane to succeed. That’s why she remains here day after day disrupting this blog.
By the way, Obama is coming to my town next week. He has lovely hands. I’ll be there with the rest of the women trying to cop a feel.

Wise, a white anti-racism activist and scholar (and author of White Like Me), pushes plenty of buttons in this methodical breakdown of racism's place in the wake of Barack Obama's victory. In the first of two essays, the author obliterates the canard of the US as a post-racial society; bigotry and insititutionalized discrimination, he contends, have simply morphed into "Racism 2.0," in which successful minorities are celebrated "as having 'transcended' their blackness in some way." While racial disparities in employment and income, housing, education and other areas persist, Obama has become an amiable sitcom dad like Bill Cosby, putting whites at ease by speaking, looking and acting "a certain way"-not to mention avoiding discussion of race. In his second, more incendiary essay, Wise concludes that whites must take responsibility for racism. What the majority of whites fail to grasp, he says, is that they continue to benefit from a system of "entrenched privileges" centuries in the making, and that racism remains a serious obstacle for millions of African Americans. There's no sugar coating here for whites, nor are there any news flashes for Americans of color, but Wise bravely enumerates the unpalatable truths of a nation still struggling to understand its legacy of racist oppression.

ReplyDeletemaria, "this is from the sidebar. it's a crock of shit now. must have been written a long, long time ago."
ReplyDeleteYeah, you are right, esp when that stupid racist evil jackass Shabazz posts. He put the "i" in ignoramus.
maria, Shabazz is a self-hating Black with a very limited vocabulary.
"From the last two threads to the present day, Alicia has posted the word HOBAMA approximately 127 times.
ReplyDeleteHer vicious jealousy of Obama is also deeply telling. It is definitely sexual."
Have you notice Field's disrespect for Beck on this blog? Of course not....How many times has he typed "Beckkk?". I bet it never crossed your dumbass mind to count them, did it?
You liberal ass-kissing black dems don't notice your own shit because you are too busy finding fault with others-- with your self-righteous arrogant selves. How many times did Field call Christine O'Donnell- "Sarah light"? And how many times did you turkeys praise that insulting name?
Yeah. It's alright for Field and a lame duck like you to call conservatives names, but it's not ok to call Obama names. You overly sensitive grandiose childish fools think that Obama is holy and sacred-- even though the unemployment rate for Blacks is sky high-- the highest of all other races in A-merry-ca! Yet you imbeciles continue to worship him! Hell, you don't even question him.
You folks are far worse than the members of New Birth whom you criticize for being loyal to Eddie Long. And you even have the nerve to psycho-analyze AB? GET LOST.
YOU ARE A HYPOCRITE WHO GOES ABOUT LABELLING OTHERS AS HYPOCRITES! YOU need to work on yourself instead of worrying what AB needs. YOU need psychoanalysis yourself.
Two of Us, "Personally I think Anonymous posts should be deleted out of hand. Who cares what they have to say if they won't cop to what they say? I don't."
ReplyDeleteWhat does "..cop to what they say mean?" Are you Hathor friends, or maybe distant cousins?
In relation to this subject of this post (before it somehow became about "Hobama" again)...
ReplyDeleteCranick was stupid not to pay his fire protection fee. Real stupid.
However, I can not fathom the mentality of firefighters who would stand around and watch his house burn down, and his pets along with it. Where is the fucking humanity? Empathy? Compassion?
They didn't even have to go into the building - just stand there with their hose.
Rules are rules, for sure. And a fully-rounded human being knows when to go against the rules.
I cannot for the life of me understand how at least one fireman didn't say "Screw it, I can't just stand around and watch this. I'm gonna do my job."
Save the house, and send the guy a great big whopping bill afterwards.
The Two of Us-"Personally I think Anonymous posts should be deleted out of hand. Who cares what they have to say if they won't cop to what they say? I don't"
ReplyDeleteIn reality, no one cares what anyone says on a blog anyway-unless you don't have a life. It's just a blog. Don't be so serious, lighten up.
Some Anons have more insights than some of the dummies with names. But if you aren't listening while you are reading, then you will miss the gestalt.
"I cannot for the life of me understand how at least one fireman didn't say "Screw it, I can't just stand around and watch this. I'm gonna do my job.""
ReplyDeleteThose firemen were told NOT to do anything. If they did they would lose their job. Also, these firemen knew the Cranicks had not paid a dime for many years and made fun of others who had paid $75.
Compassion and empathy? There was none... Just like the Cranicks had NONE for the firefighters and the county.
Disappointing! This policy should be reviewed and revised if they want to get out clean from half of the worlds resentment.
ReplyDeleteDid you see the picture? The fire truck was very red, I guess if someone pulled your hose all day long you would turn red too.
ReplyDeleteHey good news on foodstamps, 1 dollar of foodstamps takes about 2.50 money forced from taxpayers to create with admin costs etc but then magically creates 1.79 when spent .....yeah vote demoncrat

As someone once said to AB, dont talk about mothers you might be one someday. Wait, damn it, I forget again that transgenders cant bear fruit, or is that they are fruits? I get confused, Alicia can you clear that up for us...?
Thrasher--no offense on the fruit part yah melonhead.
Shabazz, "Like your mother."
ReplyDeleteI can always tell when I have throughly beaten Shabazz. Is that the best you got in YOUR VOCABULARY? I would have thought Frank D would have taught you a few extra words.
