I'm NOT lovin it!

Brothers, have any of you ever had to go to the "head" while traveling down the highway? You then pull up to an establishment, buy some gas, (even though you don't need any) then ask to use the facilities; only to be told that it's broken? Don't front like it's just me. I bet it's happened to damn near all of you at some point. In fact, I am sure it's happened to some of you ladies as well. (Sorry, I can't speak for white folks.) I once had to go so bad that I told the dude behind the counter playing "head"- guard that I would piss on the floor if he didn't give me the key. He did, and, guess what? The toilet worked.

Anywhooo, I gave you this little vignette because a couple of brothers up in Zoo Yawk are accusing Micky D's of playing bathroom guard with a racial angle:

"Can I get a Big Mac and the key to the bathroom?

That's what three black men are claiming happened to them when they asked to use a bathroom at a McDonald's in the Kips Bay neighborhood of Manhattan.

Christopher White, Abdul Rasuul, and Leroy Johnson allege that they were told they had to buy food when they asked to use the restroom at a Third Avenue McDonald's.

Meanwhile, they claim, a white woman who did not buy anything was allowed to use the restroom. The men say they suffered "shock, pain, emotional, psychiatric, psychological and mental injuries" as a result of the alleged race-based slight.

McDonald's declined to comment saying it hadn't seen the suit.." (Link)

Hold up! Come on now; not Micky D's? All those commercials they have on BET, and ads in Essence and Ebony? Naaahh. And not in New York. I mean I experienced these little inconveniences while traveling down South. I didn't expect brothers to experience bathroomism in New York.

Oh well, I guess you Negroes are just going to have to tinkle before you leave home.

Or, take heart, there is always Burger King.

  1. It's not necessarily just you. I'm female, 4'10", 60-never-mind-how-many-more years old, and so white I'm blinding in full sun, and I encounter the same problem all the time. Seems like every gas station has the "out of order" sign up. They don't like to let people use the restrooms because they don't like to clean and stock them. (I guess because there aren't any women working there - apparently only women know how to clean bathrooms.) In NYC, I've learned never to drink anything unless I'm sitting at a table.

  2. I, a white guy, have held up a three year old to the counter with the, "serious? The little girls gonna pee. There isnt anywhere else for miles! Broken? So where do you go? I'll pay... or you will."

it works like 50/50 and she is surprisingly cute.... wait. MAybe too cute cuz ya know... Our mix makes the cutest babies.

Happens here in Chicago too. Happened to me. McDonald's off of the Dan Ryan expressway, for folks from the Chi. Seems we aren't treated with human dignity in our own neighborhoods. Hell, when we lived in a mostly white suburb even the Blockbuster would let you use the facilities. Here in the hood you have to get kidney stones because there is no place with a restroom. Sad. On the L there are no restrooms so if you have a long commute you'd better not have a drink because you will have to get off the train to whiz and pay to get back on and that's IF you can find a place to go. No wonder the elevators always have a curious yellow liquid in them.

Field, those three negroes probably wore their pants below their asses, talked loud and used words like Wacka Flocka. I wouldn't let them in the bathroom either. They probably wanted to smoke a joint and sniff crack, like the folks in the Wacka Flocka video. I am sure that's what the folks at McD's were thinking.

But I am from Chicago and even on the South Side, negroes won't let a brother use the toilet. The reason? They don't like Blacks using their restrooms. There are too many Wacka Flockas on the South Side doing crack in the bathrooms who leave it so filthy that it would make a sewer cleaner throw up.

    I agree.

Where I live, I don't recall ever being denied access to a restroom in a place of business. However, it happened to me in Atlanta. I followed one of my mindless cousins in one of those "a million plus two more" Korean/Asian Beauty supply shops all over the place. Even though my cousin's basket was packed, they still denied me their restroom. I was so annoyed I declared we wasn't spending a dime in their store.

    They didn't even flinch.

I guess they knew the usual flock of other mindless black women would be in promptly throughout the day to pump more good resources in their racist-greedy pockets.

Speaking of racist Korean/Asian businesses. Don't do business with Jenny's Place wholesale in Atlanta either. Those racist flockas had the nerve to tell me it's store policy to leave MY personal handbag/pocketbook at the front desk before I could proceed. Hell no.

To think, my handbag and wallet that cost much more than their rat-boat ticket here to America. As if.

I thought brohamas WAS referring to Black and White relationships. I assumed he was White because he said he was a "white guy."

Besides, I have seen quite a few babies of Black and White couples lately, and they have all been very cute. 'Most' of those couples were wm and bw.

I bet even CT and wife could turn out some cute kids...well...that might be stretching it a bit-- Everything has its limits.

  14. Not being able to use the restroom unless you buy something? It's not uncommon, although most business that have such a rule tend to be on the shady side, anyways. As far as McD's goes, this is the first time I've heard of one that had the head locked up. All of the McD's I've been to, even the ones in the "hood", have relatively clean restrooms that are unlocked.

"Where I live, I don't recall ever being denied access to a restroom in a place of business. However, it happened to me in Atlanta. I followed one of my mindless cousins in one of those "a million plus two more" Korean/Asian Beauty supply shops all over the place."

I don't understand why more Black women haven't opened up their own beauty supply shops. Black women shouldn't have to run to the Koreans every time they want some Yakki #10 weave.

More Black businesses in Black neighborhoods. Sounds like a good idea to me, even if people make it seem so far-fetched.

Instead of assuming racism...I would begin with the messes that others have left in the Bathroom. Yes, gawd-fearin' Merican citzens who defecate on the walls, the floor, and the urinal. Female sanitary napkins and tampons not-quite-flushed down the toilet and others placed everywhere but the trash can. People who 'finger-paint' on the walls of the stall with the available material.
This is in whitest rural Whitesylvania....I would imagine with more people and the anonymity found in larger urban areas it could be much, much worse.

Hey Anony 11:21, I hear you. I've always had a relaxer, it's actually much easier for me. NO weaves, dyes and extensions please, never liked those. One day I do want to go natural, but that's one day.

You see the problem isn't that black women are spending their money on these hair products, it's hurtful and enraging when the profit isn't going into our own pockets and communities.

Instead it's going into the hands of racist insular exploiters who infest and harbor themselves around us like ungrateful greed driven blood-suckers. Black people need to wake up.

    Save the hate mail.

Why do they lock the bathrooms in service stations? Are they worried someone is going to break in and clean them?

I travel the country and have never seen a locked bathroom in a McDonalds. All in all, I think we should thank McDonalds for being able to use their bathrooms without restrictions. I think in fairness maybe we only have part of the story and should see what McDonald's version is.

  30. "I always wonder why Black people don't open more businesses and immigrants who can barely speak english come over and are making money off black folks right away. Oh, yeah its racism...no wait..its...white supremacy...no wait...."

There were once a decent amount of black owned beauty shops, but we live in "America" where money has no race, and anyone can exploit and capitalize.

The industry is over saturated now, it's too late for black entrepreneurs to take that back. It would take a lot of conscious minded black women/people to boycott etc., but for the type/mindset of black females who herd those businesses, that's not going to happen. Yes, I said it. It is just too late. You let one in and that's all it takes. A roach infestation. The same goes for the Acrylic nail industry in certain areas.

However, in fairness a lot of immigrants who come to America come with that business mindset. More of the non-black/non-white immigrants (Asian, Arab, Indian, etc.) also have the support system among themselves, they have various types of indentured financing to help each other. Black people in America, especially black Americans do not have that social support, lack of unity (so much want to distance themselves from blackness).

And it seems the American bureaus and financial industries would rather lend money, give a license, or lease that property to a non-black immigrant, terrorist, or a squirrel before they would do business with blacks in America.

That's why I always tell black people ad nauseam, stop trying to expend their time and resources fighting for non-black immigrants/groups in America. These various groups of people have a stronger network and they DO NOT need our support. We need to start supporting our own interest, people, children and communities before we should even think about lending a hand to others who would bite off in a second.

Now getting off my soap box.

AB, girl, last night I was too tired to go there. I was patiently waiting to see if more blacks would dare make another complacent comment about what Bro- said. That was a slap, but I don't blame him though, he knows he's in good company saying that mess around black people.

I don't know how people, black and others get it in their heads that their black "mix" babies are "more cute" than anybody else's, especially black babies.

I was once hated on an online forum for mothers, especially the IR section, which was disproportionately populated by white mothers and blackish babies. Go figure. The white mothers would say that mess plus more all the time... well that's until I came on the scene like a bull in a china shop. They were so traumatized they stopped that mess in a week.

Brother Field, I sometimes wonder if you, an immigrant, fully understand the scope and reach of racism in AmeriKKKa. Are you aware of the police brutality visited upon black males in NY, including the recent murder of a university student? Have you tried to get a cab in NYC? As a friend of mine frequent reminds me, the Mason-Dixon line begins at the Canadian border. If you don't believe me, ask Skip Gates.

why is this ok for a "bruh" but not imus???

    shame!!!

But, I can never ignore all of the significant "brothers" who disrespect me and my sisters in all media daily. "Brothers" like Eddie Murphy, R. Kelly (When is he ever going to trial?!?), 50 Cent, and countless other "brothers" who incessantly slander us as "skeezers, skanks, tricks, bitches, hos, hood rats etc...". I can never ignore all of the national award shows that increasingly give Oscars and Grammies to "pimps" as financial and artistic kudos that encourage these "brothers" to continue such degradation for fame and fortune.

For the record, I never had any love for Imus. But, I thought my "brothers" were supposed to love me and inspire me to love them. As Alice Walker penned, black men are supposed to hold up half of the sky for us, as we hold up the other half for them. So, why is it that nearly every time I hear a Top 40 rap or soul song, or watch a popular video or film created by a black male, I feel like the sky is falling? Imus may feel like Chicken Little. But, my pain is caused by too many "brothers" feeling that all black women are chicken heads.

As for the on going public disrespect of black women, this is why I've stopped taking black men on with their racism chasing. Have you ever notice in most societies how other men usually treat a man who just cursed his mother out in public? Ok. Until the black male learns to publically respect/honor himself and black women, they will continuously be denied of respect from other men and society.

Bro-, when I first read your comment I took it as hopeful sarcasm, but there are too many people on all sides who actually believe that foolishness.

Rottnkid, mind I share something with you. When I first saw your son's pic, I knew your side of the family (a black woman) was probably taking care for him the most. His hair was in a neat haircut, and didn't possess that usual wild rat nest do. "Good hair" is subjective.

And if you don't mind, please tell me exactly what are the combinations he so possess out of the two of you that makes him such a "cute mix"? Just curious on your thoughts.

    ie

assnons should do FAR better research on the legendary ar coroner/clinton crony and his role in mena etc asap:

    fahmy malak

One of the boys' mothers, Linda Ives, has dedicated her life to finding out what really happened to her son, Kevin, ever since that hot August night in 1987. Mrs. Ives was able to get a grand jury to look at the case. They had the bodies exhumed and reviewed by Dr. Joseph Burton, chief medical examiner for Atlanta, Georgia.

The second autopsy showed that Kevin's skull had been crushed and that his friend Don had been stabbed in the back hours before the train ran over their bodies. A second grand jury concluded that both boys were obviously murdered and that their deaths were tied to the drug traffic in Saline County, Arkansas.

Days after the area had supposedly been scoured for evidence relatives found one of the boys' feet and some gold chains that the police didn't find. Dr. Malak's autopsy report didn't even mention that one of the boys had a foot missing. Much of the evidence surrounding the case wound up missing also, including crime scene photos.

Dr. Malak's rulings on mysterious deaths in Arkansas have come under close scrutiny many times. In May of 1992 the Los Angeles Times ran a cover story on Malak's incompetence as a medical examiner. The Times cited over 20 other cases that were grossly bungled. A 20/20 television special also covered the story.

Some of Malak's well known rulings include the 1985 murder of Raymond Albright who was shot 5 times with a Colt .45, which Malak ruled a suicide. In the case of James Milam, who was decapitated, Malak had ruled that the victim died of natural causes!

Why are you continuing to perpetuate falsehoods like this?

You can feed a family more nutritious, healthy food for less than taking them to the Scottish Place. It takes planning and motivation.

Garbage in, garbage out. If you can't be bothered to feed your kids nutritious, decent food and instead hit the default button of going to BK or McD etc because you're lazy, then don't be surprised at what you get back -- inattentive, hyper, nutritionally starved kids who can't focus and can't learn.

I know. I taught a class on nutrition, meal planning and prep for low-income/social assistance families for several years as an outreach program to our pediatric practice.

That being said, I don't think the locked washroom is a race issue, it's a locality issue. The BK in downtown SF had locked restrooms because of the number of vagrants in the area and they vandalized the restrooms and harassed the paying patrons. So the policy of locking the restrooms was implemented.

Teaching people how to eat the best way possible with limited choices is surely a good thing. Yet I can't help but feel that the Bodega Diet smells more like a media hook than a real answer to urban problems. Traveling from the Upper East Side and accompanying a reporter on a day trip to the Bronx and Harlem to point out the healthy choices among the processed fare is nice. But a drive-by nutrition lesson won't help the millions for whom lack of access to good food is an ongoing problem — the people who are not likely to have access to Cooking Light's newest tome. Coverage of the Bodega Diet — with its too-cutesy moniker that brings to mind "get slim for summer" weight-loss schemes — trivializes what is far from trivial. The real victims of the grocery gap aren't urban hipsters looking for a food fix after a night at the bar. They're the folks who have to eat The Hood Diet every day.

Ebony did a story on why Korean dominate the Black hair care business. In part it is because, Black owned hair companies were bought up by white-owned corporations and the yaki comes from distributors in their part of the world. Essentially, we (Blacks, Americans) ceded teh business to them.

If a Black perosn tried to deal w/ the distributors/vendors it would be hard- the Koreans have a strangle-hold on the business. Not saying it can't be done...

Karen, AB has a point. Because of political economy, its rather easy for well-heeled middle class families to eat healthy. Between yuppie enclaves like Trader Joes and Whole Foods, automobile access and farmer's markets, and of course, a stable income that alows me to buy fresh food regularly - its rather easy for a single "buppie" like me to eat right.
But you don't want to be raw food vegan and live in the South Bronx or Compton. I remember when community development groups a few years back worked to get a grocery store in a poor Black and Latino community in New Haven, CT. That fight took almost 5-10 years.

OTOH, you can't walk out the door without tripping over cheap fast food and liquor stores in East LA and South Central.

I could go on, but lets be clear - having people eat a healthly, sustainable diet of mostly vegetables and whole grains isn't going to make folks a McDonald's or Archer-Midland any duckets. And making sure its affordable will cost folks like Whole Foods a lot of money.

So long as food consumption is about profit and not health, we're going to eat ourselves to death as a nation.

Its easy to claim that "All Americans Should Eat Healthy". Its another to fight for the right policies.

    -----------------------------------
    You're the one making assumptions.
The clinic which provided the outreach was in the middle of the worst gov housing project and was home to jail with a notorious history.

We had to overcome MANY hurdles to put the project in place including skepticism from our clients, a huge number of who dropped out.

After I left the city when my son was molested, I worked in a rural area where some of the patients in our catchement area lived up to three hours away, so we had to go to THEM as most of them didn't have the resources to come to US. I thought I had seen poverty in the city, but the REAL poverty is in the rural areas.

The ones who stayed for the whole program ended up on the first step of getting out of the poverty trap and the cycle that that breeds.

It was a bonus to see some of these families break the chain. But we started it because we saw so many of the medical issues with these kids was nutritional and emotional.

And this was a year-long project -- the families met once a week -- for emotional support as much as the nutritional -- esp near the end of the month and talking about/planning on how to wisely spend scarce resources when the checks arrived at the beginning of the month. Long-term habits can not be changed overnight. Which is why we had a high dropout rate (about 50% in the first 3 mths). It was hard and took commitment and effort. There were times in the first pilot year when even I wanted to give up on the whole thing.

Modeling for your children that you should soothe yourself with food-- high fat, salty food at that -- is not responsible behavior.

I won't make excuses for the reasons why people make bad choices for themselves and their kids. Most of our drop-outs were people who didn't like hearing you shouldn't be buying booze or drugs and cigarettes first when that check arrives and then feeding your kids ketchup sandwiches halfway through the month, or smoking in the home when your kids are being hospitalized repeatedly for asthma. Or that you're not fooling anyone when you lie/deflect about any of the above.

If FLOTUS was sincere about her healthy kids initiative, (which on the face of it is a good idea) she would be advocating seed money for small, community-based initiatives like this, which give people skills and support to change their behavior and as well, outlook on life, instead of advocating big $$ to expand the crappy, sub-par school lunch program into a year-long lunch and dinner program, which is controlled by Big Ag and the unions. Ignore the faux rhetoric about "concern" and always follow the $$money$$.

I don't unnerstand. In Noo Yawk a restaurant (even a McD's) is legally obliged to have a bathroom for its patrons. And why would it then be locked??

And Kips Bay is no run-down neighborhood with shadowy types.

Bathrooms are "for patrons only," though, which means a purchase was necessary. The white woman--well, I guess the clerk exercised whimsy, probably legal, to override policy. But they bro's may have a case. In this town, when in doubt, see a lawyer and sue the bastards!

Those who are in the fast food RE business know their market -- there will be a crappy FF restaurant anywhere they can make $$$.

And this is one area where the schools in a lower income area could actually show some leadership but they don't.

Our program was supported by donors to our hospital. Like FLOTUS, I was a community outreach director, but unlike FLOTUS, I didn't think my job was to dump our indigent population on others, I actually believed our mission was to help people.

But a school with a savvy/caring admin could take the same leadership role. Or a church.
One of the side benefits of a program like this is the building of connections between people -- isolation is a big part the poverty equation.

  101. "and soothings that cause wide hips are often due to generational poverty/malnutrition

    My point is:
Easy E - Eric Wright was born to Richard and Kathie Wright on September 7, 1963 in Compton, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. His father was a postal worker and his mother was a grade school administrator. Eric dropped out of high school[3] in the tenth grade and supported himself by selling drugs. His profit went to invest in Ruthless Records. He was also a member of theKelly Park Compton Crip during his teen years, and he openly associated himself with other Crips.[4] He later received a high school equivalency diploma
You’re the queen of links, here you go:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eazy-E

So what’s the difference between Jay Z and Easy E? Nothing. They got busy and made it happen like a lot of young men did back in the 80's. The difference is they invested their “dirty” money to better their lives. I have no problem with that. And I also don’t have not problem that they BOTH went to the Whitehouse under a DEMOCRAT admin and a REPUBLICAN admin. Trust me, they’re not the first drug dealers to make it there and they certainly won’t be the last.

    I’ll bite..
I take him to get his haircut every 2 weeks because I’m trying to teach him to keep up his appearance. First impression is the last impression. You can’t go around and expect to get any sorta respect with unkempt hair or a busted hairline. (Somebody needs to holler at Harold Ford). I also taught him to iron his clothes and to wear a belt. Clothes should never be wrinkled and your ass should never show. I learned this from my Dad and a little help from Lil Boosie “Wipe Me Down”, the hook, “Shoulders, Pants, Chest, Shoes” – Shoulders/Chest – Shoulders back, chest out – Confidence within self and the look of confidence. Pants – Ironed and creased. Shoes – Your shoes should always be clean, unless you work in an environment where it’s not feasible.

Also, I never said he was “cute”, I said he was good looking - there's a difference there. I’m black with some Cherokee thrown in there somewhere. His Mom is German/Italian with some Powhatten thrown in there somewhere – If that’s where you’re getting at. I just happen to be lucky to have a good looking kid.

A thief's a thief, no matter how small or big.

And as far as Jay Z and Diddy and the whole Illuminati bullshit - That's just what it is - Bullshit. I respect them both because they both worked the system, by hook or crook, without marrying up or tossing a ball. Only difference is, is thier skin color.

Touche, RK. So many folks buy into this "Illuminati" crap. Jay-Z makes a pop culture reference to wealth and elite power and suddenly people thinks the man drinks goat's blood and regularly attends the Tri-lateral Commission.

Other Nonsense. The Wu-Tang Clan (known pot heads and comic book geeks) refernces comic book characters and kung-fu flick in most of their songs. But I don't expect Method Man to turn into a Flaming Skull on a Motorcycle or Ghostface to dawn a cybernetic suit.

And again, most of the 'secret society' stuff is complete rubbish - its design to discourage and distract people from their real power.

And if they had stayed community-based the programs would still be successful.

    But they've been co-opted.

The garbage they feed kids in the school programs is no different from anything you find in a FF joint.

Local, community-based solutions are always preferable to government ones.

The needs of the rural community I worked with were very different from the urban one. But big govt programs refuse to see the differences in needs, cultures, attitudes, etc.

And the BP got co-opted too. But I don't want to rehash that all over again.

"if rich white hoods were filled with church's chickens and liquor stores i think rich whites/teens would be just as obese and drunk"
    ----------------------------------
I hate to break it to you, but "rich white teens" are just as obese, and drunk, and stoned (or maybe even more stoned) as their less economically blessed brethren. The only difference is, their parents can afford to ship them off to a military-style prep boarding school to inculcate a sense of "discipline" because they (the parents) want to be their "friends" and tough love isn't part of their vernacular.

  126. Double-standards are mad uncool. However, as a courtesy, I was taught by my parents that if I desired to use the restroom at an establishment such as Mc D's, I should purchase something.

As for the Black men alleging racism: There are much bigger fish to fry, and, if this particular issue is causing them the degree of duress they claim, *they* have much bigger fish to fry. Please...
