So it's been thirty years since that wack job with the Catcher in the Rye jones put a cap in John Lennon's dome. He seemed like a cool dude and all, but I never understood the obsession. (Field, that's heresy! I know.) This is how f&^%$d up I am; Ringo Starr has always been my favorite Beatle.
Anyway, it looks like O might share a tragic anniversary with Lennon. This is the day that Lennon died, and it might very well be the day that the Obama mystique died as well. (At least with the lefties) I sure hope not. Maybe he will be ultimately viewed as a disappointment, but he does have two years to go. That is an eternity in polit-tricks.
Folks want to know why I am not as pissed off about his O ness caving as some other people, and I always have to explain that I never expected as much from the man as the people who are crying a river now. I took him for what he was: a career politician raised in old school democratic urban politics with a centrist and go along to get along mind set. He is no more no less. Ultimately what type of president he was going to be was going to depend on the people he surrounded himself with. That's why I was disappointed when I saw the first cast of characters.

Still, what is pissing me is watching folks like Mary Landrieu play Jane f&^%$#g Addams all of a sudden. Give me a break! Question for folks like Michael Collins over at the Agonist; why are you even using Mary Landrieu as an example of liberal angst?
"Here's what Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu said about the deal. Landrieu is a conservative Southern Democrat with big energy agenda. She represents a very conservative state. Even she knows this deal is a disaster.
"He's enthusiastic about this new arrangement dealing with the Republican caucus that stated, according to their leader, their number one objective is to unseat him. I can understand trying to appeal to independent voters. I do that myself. I think it's very important. But this sort of enthusiasm for caucusing with Republicans – and he didn't even, literally, didn't even speak to the Democratic caucus. Not any of it. Not the liberal group, not the moderate group, not the conservative group," said Landrieu. Senate Democrats Openly Upset with Tax Cut Deal
When Mary Landrieu opposes your strategy on tax cuts for the rich, you know you've gone too far. But Obama is just doing his job, the one he signed up for - an elegant, charming functionary for the ruling class who could fool people just long enough to allow the Bush bailout looting to continue in full force."
Ahhh excuse? Let me remind you folks of something: MARY LANDRIEU VOTED FOR THE BUSH TAX CUTS! (h/t Lawrence O'Donnell for calling out this fraud)

O- man, no wonder you're going gray.
Mary Landrieu also said of the tax cut deal "I can't be bought". This is the same democrat who defended her decision to work out a $100 million Louisiana Purchase deal for her Obamacare vote and told Republicans to shut up about it.
ReplyDeleteTime and time again ever since she was elected, Mary has shown that she is an accomplished, compulsive and pathological LIAR. She was completely AWOL during Katrina. I cannot adequately express the contempt that I have for that sick, evil and slimy POS.
Field,
ReplyDeleteIf the Democrats are so against Obama's deal then they need to vote it down and stop whining. They've had all of the majorities in congress for two years and all they did was walk around on egg shells and whispered. Now they've decided to yell and scream. Well it's too late. They better get organized and put a game plan together on how to deal with the wackos coming to town next month.
I'm a Ringo fan too,Field.
ReplyDeleteHe always seemed approachable, unpretentious and fun to hang out with.He got the last laugh, since he one of the two surviving Beatles.
ditto Field ditto we deinitely share pretty close to the same evaluation of Obama.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you feel for him, though, and you're right, how did Mary Landreau become the patron saint of the working class?
Just for fun I am going to dig up one of my old pre Obama presidency analysis and see how right I was.
I know this is totally off topic, but, please, everyone pray for a miracle for Aretha Franklin.
ReplyDeleteI'm a Paul McCartney guy myself- sorry the Girl is Mine with MJ is the joint. Blame it on my age, I'm a child of the 80's.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, Field I'm with you, but I'll got a step further. Obama is a left-center moderate in personality and philosophy. He's a Chicago Style Technocrat - no surprise. And he surround himself with technocrat, again perfectly logical.
But if the left wants to blame anyone, we need to blame ourselves. I am the broken record, but let reiterate - we share as much the blame on the so-called 'failures' of the Obama administration as the O-man himself.
Instead of spending all their time bitching about no public option, liberal groups should have moved their collective asses to fight the Tea Party on their own turf. Arianna Huffington, Ralph Nader, Cornel West and other lefty motor mouths could have used their time talking to people in middle America.
And more importantly, we could gotten into the streets. We could actively engage our congresspeople. We could do something other than blogs and watching MSNBC.
And that's just we lefties, who actually know the deal. Let's not forget middle America who sat on their hands and didn't pay attention. They either stayed home or voted for the Right Wing corporate lobbyist disguised as Tea Party revolutionaries.
A little black girl
ReplyDeleteA stranger was seated next to a little black girl on the airplane when the stranger turned to her and said, "Let's talk. I've heard that flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger."
The little girl, who had just opened her coloring book, closed it slowly and said to the stranger, "What would you like to talk about?"
"Oh, I don't know," said the stranger. "Since you are an Afro American, do you think that So-called President Barak Obama is qualified for the job?" and he smiles.
"OK", she said. 'That could be an interesting topic. But let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff - grass -. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps of dried grass. Why do you suppose that is?"
The stranger, visibly surprised by the little girl's intelligence, thinks about it and says, "Hmmm, I have no idea."
To which the little girl replies, "Do you really feel qualified to discuss President Barak Obama...when you don't know shit?"
RK - funny.

ReplyDeleteField, I noticed that I get upset when they denigrate the President although I'm not happy with some of his policies and get frustrated with his brand of compromise. Do you think it's analogous to a male relative that you are hard on at times but outsiders better not say anything about him?
To rottnkid: I like the story about the little black girl. You've made your point. hmmmm....
"If the Democrats are so against Obama's deal then they need to vote it down and stop whining. They better get organized and put a game plan together on how to deal with the wackos coming to town next month."
ReplyDeleteDems are back in their natural element as underdogs, so this sudden display of "courage" isn't surprising. I wish they had this much courage when they held the majority in both legislatures.
I don't blame the President, but no one seems to look at the democrats in the house and senate who seems as if they get themselves together to get the damn bill passed in the first place, then no one would worry about having to compromise. I knew that the conservative democrats would be supportive of the President in the first place and stands to reason why they will not be returning to the next session. Let's go back a few weeks when the bill to extend unemployment benefits failed thanks to those conservative democrats who went to the Republicans. Ask yourself would the Republicans not vote for bill, possible answer to use it as a bargaining chip for vote of the extension of the Bush Tax Cuts. The Democrats are good for not banding together as a united front. Love them or hate them, the Republicans stick together no matter what and all have the same message as to give them credibility for their faulty arguments. The President is the lead singer with bad back-up singer due to lack of harmony and out of tune. Forgive me, I am listening to iTunes promo introducing that it has Beatles music and the reason for the music analogy.
ReplyDeleteNow the President has to be the pragmatic person and the grown up in the room because let's face it, he couldn't take the risk of two million people losing their unemployment benefits in a couple of weeks. And why do they wait until the holidays to cut benefits or layoff people? (Another side thought). I didn't see the press conference, but heard the President's comment. We can't pay politics in this instance, he was actually pissed and it was more so toward the democrats. The democrats have painted themselves into a corner, and it's easy to blame the President because he is the in front. He only makes up one-third of the government, and the democrats in the house and senate have to get their acts together in the next session, or the President will just side step them and deal with the Republicans alone which is doing anyway.
Mark:
ReplyDeleteI agree with your comment. And Democrats are not going to vote against because they will look like the group that got in the way of working people receiving unemployment benefits, and doesn't matter if the Republicans voted it now first as the American people are 10 years old and have a short attention span. Besides ever Republican will hit every media outlet and say to the American people it's the Democrats fault. Don't you just love politics?
"Obama is just doing his job, the one he signed up for - an elegant, charming functionary for the ruling class who could fool people just long enough to allow the Bush bailout looting to continue in full force."
ReplyDeleteWord to yo Momma!
God bless John Lennon's soul.
ReplyDeleteThe Beatles, with John as the main spokesman, refused to play before segregated audiences during their American tours in the early 60s when most white entertainers would have took the money and ran.
John Lennon was a man of great courage and conviction.
As well sa a wonderful composer and lyrist
Lennon songs like "Come Together", "In My Life" and "Norwiegian Wood" sound as beautiful and vital today as they did when he wrote them 40 odd years ago.
He just wanted to "Give Peace a Chnace"
Whats wrong with that?
Landrieu is certainly a Grade A hypocrite but she's still right that it's wrong to extend these tax cuts. What's worse is for what? O got a total of $60 billion for unemployment that doesn't even apply to most of the unemployed. Republicans got $900 billion. This is of course ignoring smaller trades but how on Earth can his O ness come back and tell us this is a good deal? This isn't as simple as a bad deal, it's an absolute betrayal of core democratic values and BAD economics to boot (we've had this cuts in place for 10 years and look what they've given us)! Note: I did not say liberal values but democratic values. To make matters worse, the details of this plan would INCREASE taxes for the poor! Taxing the poor to give the rich a break simply can't be justified.
ReplyDeleteYesterday, an old high school friend of mine grabbed me on chat and said he has never been more ashamed in his life to be a republican because of the unfairness of this tax deal! He said he was totally on my side and congressional democrats' side of the aisle on this and couldn't believe his party was trying this -- it shocked me because he makes fun of Pelosi regularly but there it is. He said he couldn't believe that his party or anyone else could possibly think that the American people would buy this shit. He's a military guy with a family to raise and a deep sense of fairness that apparently overrides his loyalty to party and he is livid about it.
At any rate, I have never expected too much from O -- he's a pol but I never expected this either. It's wrong on every level from the economic level to the moral one and I hope congressional dems raise holy hell.

In the Senate, it takes 60 votes to do practically anything... procedurally, or legislatively.
And when Democrats have Blue Dogs in their party, operating essentially as members of the Republican party on many issues, the number of liberal Democrats in the Senate shrinks accordingly.
The passage of Wall Street and Health Care reform would not have been possible without the Democrats holding firm (by plying some of their own members with concessions or sweeteners), and the enticement of moderate Republicans to break ranks with their party to preclude the dreaded filibuster.
With this motley collection of public servants, it's a miracle that any legislation got passed in the current congress, and it shouldn't surprise anyone that what did pass was a watered-down, soggy mess with a few dry spots of actual legislative achievements.
Next year, the passage of anything worthwhile will take more than a miracle (the power of belief), it may take a direct act of God.
Zing, thanks for laying out the math.

ReplyDelete"Zing, thanks for laying out the math."
My pleasure.
As it now stands:
ReplyDeleteTax cuts just 37 percent of the total deal
Despite being billed as a great debate over the Bush tax cuts, the struggle between President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans appears to have ended with an extension of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts representing only about 37 percent of the total cost of the agreement Obama announced Monday night.
In August, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated that that a two-year extension of the Bush tax cuts for 2011 and 2012 would amount to $336 billion. The New York Times estimates the cost of the entire package under consideration at $900 billion.
In its fact sheet on the tax cut framework, the White House provides some numbers on specific provisions:
A $120 billion Social Security payroll tax cut in 2011, with the rate being cut from 6.2 percent of earned income to 4.2 percent. For a worker making $60,000 a year, this would result in an additional $1,200 in take-home pay.
$56 billion in additional unemployment insurance benefits for 13 months.
$40 billion in tax cuts for families and students, including a two-year extension of the American Opportunity tax credit which helps families pay college tuitions, which was part of last year's stimulus.
The White House fact sheet did not detail the cost of a two-year accord on estate tax (taxing inherited wealth above $5 million at 35 percent).
But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pegged the cost of that provision as $25 billion in her statement expressing opposition to the Republican parts of the agreement. The estate tax deal would "add insult to injury," Pelosi complained.
The accord which Obama unveiled Monday night must now be transformed into legislative language. It's far from certain what the final package will include and how many Democrats will vote for it.
But what Obama announced Monday turned out to be a blend of Bush tax cuts and Obama tax cuts.
It includes the $120 billion cut in the Social Security payroll tax, but Obama had to jettison the Making Work Pay tax credit for individuals earning less than $75,000 and married couples earning less than $150,000.
That credit was part of last year's stimulus bill.
Brother Field....the Beatles were a moment "where you had to have been there". The day they came to America my whole Black neighborhood ran to the TVs (three channels) to see these white boys from England. They were the only whites that "we" were allowed (our own stoppage) to openly adore. You could secretely dig Elvis.Of course with my Black Nationalist standards I did not show any joy...but I truly dug the way the way they had all our women in a "loveJones". I always say that living long you will see event being recycled. BBro O reminds me of President Carter with his willingness to please. It might work.
ReplyDeleteCarter never tried to privatize Social Security. Obama is more like Reagan in this regard, because that is exactly what this deal will end up doing.

I am inclined to agree with that.
Decades of watching what goes on has me thinking that years before the "biggie" elections, the elites and the deep state has decided what is going to be.
It is political theater, the story board is set up, the script is in draft form and may be amended at any time as the "narative" continues, and a potential cast is assembled. They all meet certain requirements, will not deviate from the the script, have already proved their worth to the deep state and elites, and can be counted on to not ad lib in a way that will not disrupt the flow of the political/societal "narative".
The election simply confirms who has which role, and their skill at theater and pleasing the bosses determines how long they stay on stage.
"Pragmatism" simply means the pragmatist will sell you out and not miss a wink of sleep no matter what happens to you.

I hear ya and a lot of brothers and sisters feel this way.
However for white America at least, the Beatles are credited with kicking off the entire counter culture and youth movement of the 60s.
There was nobody like them before for mainstream America. They motivated millions of white kids to grow their hair long, pick up guitars, question authority and rebel against their own class and culture.
For a lot of people John Lennon and the Beatles are cultural icons.

I wouldn't say they "ripped off" black music.
When Leontyne Price sings "La Traviata" or when Wynton Marsalis plays Mozart are they "ripping off" European music?
The Beatles acknowledged the strong influence that black American music had on them but the Beatles, to me, had a special uniqueness and creativity to their music.
Songs like "Norweigian Wood", "The Fool on the Hill", BlackBird", and "Yesterday" owed far more to English Folk music than to black American music.
The beauty of the Beatles is they took disparate forms and meshed them together and made it accessible to everyone.

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THIS?
I often wonder at the concept of "cultural ownership" of some phenomenon. It just seems to me that what's good and worthwhile is simply that no matter what color of wrapping the person who originates it possesses.
ReplyDeleteI have a friend who is an English teacher in our local high school, and a couple of her colleagues challengerd her along racial/cultural lines as to "black" literature. One of them quoted another doofus, said, "So, tell me, who is the 'Black Shakespeare'"?
She replied that SHAKESPEARE was the 'Black Shakespeare", he was the Shakespeare for everybody, another would be redundant. That's why he was the famous one, he'd done it first, done it best, and everyone could access and understand it.
Same thing in our more modern culture: who is the "white" Little Richard, William Grant Still, Quincey Jones, James Baldwin, Walter Mosley, and Octavia Butler?
Well, THEY are, no one else can do what they have dddone in the same way no matter what the race/culture/ethnicity questions are.

ReplyDeleteAll of this is about putting the first and they hope the last African American President in his place.
ReplyDeleteNice post Sarge.
ReplyDeleteI too believe that cultural ownership is alot of crap.
That along with peer pressure influencing kids' choices in art and culture.
The beautiful thing about little kids is that they're not old enough to be affected by peer pressure or to know what they are supposed to like or dislike.
As long as it's good, they like it.
A couple of weeks back I was driving around NYC with my 6 and 7 year old niece and nephew in the back seat. I was listening to the so-called "classic soul" station.
Thinking about those 2 kids singing and clapping along to the Commodores "Brickhouse" still brings a smile to my face.
Media Matters has obtained leaked emails that show how a top Washington editor at Fox News directed his journalists not to use the phrase "public option."
ReplyDeleteInstead, Bill Sammon, Fox News' Washington managing editor, told staffers to use the phrase "government option." This happens to be the exact phrase that Republican pollster Frank Luntz had advised Republicans to begin using to describe the public option -- on Sean Hannity's show, no less.
Speaking to Hannity in August 2009, Luntz said that "if you call it a 'public option,' the American people are split," but that "if you call it the 'government option,' the public is overwhelmingly against it."
Fair and balanced my ass.

ringo often talks about being such a junkie he does not recall being a beatles...and how surreal it is to watch footage he was too high to recall now etc...
and ALL of the beatles speak candidly about being rich young wild and abusing women once before they matured
they are human icons flawed like all of us....
How did this thread turn into another male bashing affair?
ReplyDeleteRead "Where did Our Love Go" and books about certain other female stars like Tammi Terrell and Billie Holiday and you'll find out that many of them were class A assholes, backstabbers, junkies and anything else.
And the fact that Halle Berry had 3 failed marriages is more of a reflection on HER than her mates.
I'm sure the protofemmes disagree.
Carry on.
Maybe it is Ms Berry's choice of male companions. Some of my kin had troubles with mens...until they dated the guys who worked, the guy who paid bills, they guys who were there for the kids events...dudes were not cool or BadBoyz.

Seriously, most men will tell you that nothing worse than pretty boring chick in bed or life in general. Supermodels like Halle Berry are paid to be pretty, and not much else. And sex with mannequins isn't fun.

First of all only really stupid shallow men pick up random trim from the club. Most men are NOT taking strippers or any random chick in the club home.
And yes, the whole "statue in bed" thing unspoken man code AB - pretty women who go from man to man like a party blunt are either boring in bed, make really bad choices in men (this is the real big one), are completely insane or have some other flaw that great looks and or the perfect body simply can't outweigh.

She does not know her beauty, her beauty
She thinks her brown body has no glory, no glory
But if she could dance naked ‘neath the palm tree
And see her reflection in the mirror
Then she, then she, then she would know
But there are no trees on the street where she lives and
Dishwater gives back no images
She does not know her beauty, her beauty

But if she could dance naked ‘neath the palm trees
And see her reflection in the mirror

men do not cheat because of imperfections but erections!
I didn't say that, Alicia. People cheat because people are inherently self-centered. We all know this.
But ask any man and he'll tell you that a woman with too many men in her past is usually a sign of trouble. Not matter pretty a woman is, how curvy her body - if she's a dud in bed, a loon, a diva or just plain wrong for you - men will bounce.
I don't know the her personally, but most men see divas like Halle Berry as high end sports cars, they're great for a joy ride but you don't want to commute to work or pick groceries with one of those things. An maintenance is a beast.
From my experience and from my friends, mature men will stay an average looking woman with smarts and personality over a diva any day. At the end of the day, daily drama will drive men away faster than fading looks and weight gain.
And most men put up with a lot from women, a lot more than they get credit for. Nobody's perfect, we all get that. But I think UTS was stating what a lot guys think about all these Hollywood folks - yeah, they're pretty but bring a lot of drama.

At the time he wrote ‘Imagine’ Lennon was associated with Tariq Ali’s International Marxists Group. Lennon described Imagine as a “Marxist hymn” it’s his idea of a Marxist utopia. Along with ‘Born In The USA’, one of the two most miss-interpreted songs in rock history.
ReplyDeleteI knew some people in the IMG, and I attended a couple of meeting, but in the final analysis what irritated me about the IMG is what irritates me about Imagine.
Read the lyrics, they tell you all you need to know about late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s Marxists. Vapid, naïve romantics dreaming of a world that will never be. The problem with Marxists is that they believe the human race comprises of fundamentally good and decent people who will give up materialism, war, greed and religion if someone could just show them an alternative. It’s not that way, I wish it was, but it never will be.
They were also obsessed with internationalism, forever passing resolutions supporting striking Turkish steel workers, (or whatever) while ignoring the plight of the unemployed single mother just a couple of hundred meters down the road.

Sounds a lot like my experience with many a Naderite and activist type during my days in the Green Party.
Another point too - these folks don't realize how many blatant failures and non-starts have come from their so-called leaders. Tariq Ali's been protesting British imperialism for what, 4 decades now? He's made a comfortable name for himself as a writer, but not much difference.
Same goes for Cornell West, Chomsky, Nader, Huffington and a slew of other old guard new Left and their many acolytes who haven't made any real dents in the our corrupt for years.
Like the old Chris Rock joke 'Back in the day we had guys like Malcolm, Martin, Mandela and Medgar. Now we have a bunch of substitute teachers.'

ReplyDeleteMack,
Did you grow up among all women in your household? I'm kind of surprise at your young age, I thought you were older. You are so set in your ways, promptly defensive and damaged just like Steve, who can be your father (is he?).
It's not even funny. You are far more dangerous than you appear to be. When you get emotional, you taunt girls and embellish statements beyond recognition. You become a gossiping melee man on dramatizing steroids. You do this all the time. Post-traumatic-lack-of-male-figure-syndrome. I suppose.
I bet the women folk in your household must have had a hard time hiding personal affairs and gossip from you, they would whisper amongst themselves until you go sleep. Where is your dignity?
