"I believe we can be better,"

I know Sarah is glad that her children are no longer babies. Now the poor woman won't have to worry about the Jews getting their blood.

"Palin aide Rebecca Mansour said the former Alaska governor stands by her video.

"There has been an incredible increase in death threats against Gov. Palin since the tragedy in Arizona, since she's been accused of having the blood of those victims on her hands," Mansour said. "When you start to accuse people of having the blood of innocent people on their hands, it incites violence."

Yes, let's all feel sorry for Sarah. She is, after all, the real victim in all of this.

Anyway, let me stop, I just saw the O man's speech and my spirits have been lifted. He called for all of us to be nicer to each other and to elevate the discourse here in A-merry-ca. I feel that the least I could do is tone down the finger pointing and rhetoric for one night.

"But at a time when our discourse has become so sharply polarized - at a time when we are far too eager to lay the blame for all that ails the world at the feet of those who think differently than we do - it's important for us to pause for a moment and make sure that we are talking with each other in a way that heals, not a way that wounds. "

I feel you O. Now let's see how the wingnuts react to your speech. I have a feeling that our little detente won't last too long.

    Field,

The President hit the right tone, but you're right about the wingnuts response coming up.
They'll also try and make The Arizona Governor and The Half Term Governor's speeches the greatest in recent memory.

You have to wonder what was going through Sarah Palins mind and why she would use the term blood libel when the primary target of this crime was Jewish.

I suspect that its partly because she is the resulting product of anti intellectualism gone wild.

In the old days the demogogues had to at least have a handle on the language and knew what was and was not appropriate. But I guess it doesn't take a lot of intellect to stir the narrow minded, nationalistic, us first and nothing for you crowd. And they don't need facts either they prove to be inconvenient and antithetical for their purposes.

For that crowd Palin and her ilk will do!

I have been listening to the rightist as they try to pretend that this shooting wasn't political or politically motivated. (Of course if the shooter was just insane he would have targeted any group at the shopping center that day.) But he didn't he targeted a political figure.

They can't hide, they have contributed to this climate of hatred and animosity. I mean who are the rightist kidding? Their vitriol clearly is not aimed at bettering humanity and having them sing kumbaya.

And the Dems nor the president don't get a pass either. The government has been "droning" those they don't like, as well as renditioning some others and torturing yet others.

And the US ruling class has even grabbed whole countries:violently.

What do folks expect to begin to happen with all this violent rhetoric and real violence? Even the daily dialogue is violent, as can be viewed on this blog.

More and more folks are championing our differences and stirring up division, rather than recognizing and reinforcing our common humanity and trying to work to find ways in which we can all eat, have shelter, clean water, fulfilling and fairly paid work and a future in which we can all live and walk in a warmer sun!

Put a fork in Palin. She is finally finished. Although, she has so little self awareness, it might take a few years for her to realize no one is paying any attention to her.

No, Field. Obamb didn't mean for you to be nice for just ONE night. He meant for the rest of your life.

Did you hear his bible quotes? Did you let it sink in, or did your atheistic mind shut tight? I am trying to make a civil kind merciful man out of you by getting you first to care about Repubs, and then love them before you die. It'll help get you into heaven.

Field, half the time she doesn't even know what she is saying. I won't be surprised if she picked up the term Blood libel from going to those um, rallies. I doubt she knew the history behind it, much less the meaning. And that's the true irony of her ignorance. I hope she keeps it up, she's digging deeper and deeper.

Not to mention she's bringing good material for SNL and Tina Fey, can't wait.

  15. The Prez should have given this speech last year after the Shirley Sherrod debacle or the Ground Zero Mosque non-contraversy but as the old saying goes-better late than never.

BTW even Black Republicans in AZ are running scared:

The sole black Republican Party district chairman in Arizona resigned from his post in the wake of Saturday's shooting, citing threats from the Tea Party faction and concerns for his family's safety, The Arizona Republic first reported.

Republican District 20 Chairman Anthony Miller was not the only party official to resign following the shooting that killed six and wounded 14 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and a federal judge. But Miller had been an especially dedicated campaigner for the GOP, and said he only stepped down in the face of "constant verbal attacks" and other forms of intimidation.

"I wasn't going to resign but decided to quit after what happened Saturday," he said. "I love the Republican Party but I don't want to take a bullet for anyone."

Miller, 43, told HuffPost he decided to resign after his wife expressed concern for their safety. Miller had been the target of heavy criticism from Arizona Tea Partyers, in part because he worked on Sen. John McCain's campaign last fall. (The Tea Partyers favored McCain's opponent, J.D. Hayworth.)

But the attacks also took on a racial hue. One critic referred to him derogatorily as "McCain's boy," Miller said. Other language was even less ambiguous. At an event in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Miller said someone called out, "There's Anthony, get a rope."

Yet Miller balks at crying racism.

"To say that anyone has been racially motivated, I can't really draw a conclusion," he said. "But a lot of people told me 'You're not a conservative, you're a RINO.' In my mind, that's just as bad as being called a n-----, honestly. When you call someone a n-----, it's saying they're less than, and RINO is the same thing."

i liked the speech overall, but the venue was a terrible choice and caused the pep-rally atmosphere. i've i'd been among those who lost a family member, i would have been offended by the cheering. i also dislike the constant reference to we come together as americans. BS. if this happened in italy, would they be coming together as italians? or in france, as frenchmen? how about, we come together as HUMANS? this constant american rah-rah-crap is what leads to the divisiveness!

as i keep saying, i love when she acts crazy. and even republicans won't support her.

as far as this shooter, i keep asking one question over and over: WHAT DID HIS PARENTS DO TO HELP HIM? he was obviously deranged, and if they were in denial in their own minds, they certainly should have had a clue when the community college campus police came to his door and read the letter saying he was suspended.

Here's a fact for you. For a long time there has been a hiring boom on Wall Street for people with math PhDs. A hiring boom.

The other boom area for employment is science -- biotech, pharmaceutical, chemistry.

Check the profile of every tech company you can think of. The top guys, and lots and lots of the lower-down guys, hold PhDs. And they get paid. Big.

Moreover, a lot of those PhD guys finish school and go to work for start-up companies -- you've probably heard of a few of them. You know, up there is Silicon Valley, among other places -- then after they bank a few million after their stock options pay off, they often return to their former universities to teach.

On toop of the obvious facts about making money from current PhD pursuits, there is the FACT that it will take the work of some brilliant PhD students to crack the secrets of making an electric-car battery good enough to pack as much energy as a tank of gas.

The person or team getting patent rights for that development will become richer than Bill Gates and Warren Buffett combined. The company that markets such a truly great battery will become the most profitable company ever.

As ever, you reveal how little you know about anything. Over the years, the term "blood-libel" has taken on a more general meaning.

Jews, as you might know, have opinions about everything. One or two Jewish leaders have suggested, rather mildly, that Palin could have chosen her words more wisely.

Then Allan Dershowitz, the famous and prolific appeals lawyer, pointed out the obvious -- that the word has taken on a broader meaning.

Thus, the only point you've made is to point out that you know nothing about the use of a term that was unfamiliar to most blacks until they read a few responses to Palin's speech.

  24. As usual, Obama stayed far away from the forces and factors at work in this shooting, just as he stayed far away from the obvious when muslim Major Hasan shot and killed 13 soldiers at Fort Hood.

He stayed far away from reality with the islamic mosque at Ground Zero. But he stuck his nose into the episode of a white cop arresting a black male in response to a police dispatcher report of a breaking-and-entering in progress.

In that case Obama got in front of the crowd and said "The Cambridge Police Acted Stupidly."

This time, by offering a hint that possibly the shooter was nuts, he gave the impression it might be unfair to hold Limbaugh, Hannity, et. al. responsible for driving the unfortunate shooter to act out.

Of course, the overall speech was about taking the harshness out of public speech. Thus, he was indicting the First Amendment, and therefore, indirectly, he was blaming the radio gasbags for the carnage.

Of course there was no chance he would use the same analysis to included thug-rap and Islamic hate-mongering as forces behind other acts of murder.

But he could have safely mentioned the unending stream of murderous violence that pours out of Hollywood. He missed his chance to blame Robert DiNiro in Taxi Driver, a movie that depicts a deranged nut with several guns stalking a politician in NY City.

How many assassination movies have come out of Hollywood and other film venues? How many offer graphic displays of bullets hitting their human targets?

A few nights ago I watched "American Gangster", which includes a scene where Denzel Washington's character puts a .45 to the head of a competing drug dealer on a busy Harlem street during the day, and then he pulls the trigger. Big mess on the sidewalk.

Are the visually and emotionally stunning images produced by Hollywood LESS compelling than Limbaugh telling voters -- via the radio -- to vote out liberals?

Of course, because it's all about how Whites feel when confronted with the uglier aspects of their collective culture. And it's about assholes such as yourself who find ways of assigning total blame to Blacks for their own condition in order to free Whites of the collective guilt over previous morally criminal behavior towards Blacks in a collective sense.

  31. turns out blood libel is a new republican talking point; she just picked it up from others.

    http://www.niemanlab.org/2011/01/blood-libel-how-language-evolves-and-spreads-within-online-worlds/

    excerpt:
With a bit of Google News sleuthing, supplemented by a trip to the Lexis-Nexis archive, it appears that the term “blood libel,” pre-Palin, was adopted by some conservative commentators in the immediate aftermath of the Tucson assassination attempt.

The first use of the phrase I uncovered came on January 9, one day after the shooting, on the website Renew America. As conservative activist Adam Graham put it: “When someone on the left says that the Tea Party movement is responsible for the shooting in Tucson, they are leveling the political equivalent of a blood libel that blames an entire political movement for the actions of a person who in all likelihood had no connection to the movement.” Note that Graham links to the Wikipedia page on “blood libel,” demonstrating knowledge of the traditional meaning of the term.

The term really sprang into use, however, when conservative blogger Glenn Reynolds (Instapundit) used it in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal on Jan. 10. Headlined online as “The Arizona Tragedy and the Politics of Blood Libel,” the piece asked: “So as the usual talking heads begin their ‘have you no decency?’ routine aimed at talk radio and Republican politicians, perhaps we should turn the question around. Where is the decency in blood libel?”

In the days after that piece appeared, more conservative bloggers picked up “blood libel” — and it was further amplified when commentators of a variety of political stripes used the phrase in their discussion of the Reynolds op-ed. Both Reason Online and Associated Content quoted Reynolds’ use of the term “blood libel” in their broader discussion of political rhetoric and violence. I also found “blood libel” used, without reference to Reynolds, in Human Events, The Washington Examiner, and Big Journalism (in the comment section).

The surest sign that the “blood libel” meme had caught on, though, came when it started to be used in major media comment sections like those of the Washington Post. Ordinary website readers were now referencing the term.

And then came Palin. And here we are.

He also bravely allowed at least two others to take his spot during VietNam so he could bravely avoid service that would somehow corrode his manly manliness.

Obviously you know nothing about the Vietnam draft lottery. It's clear enough that Limbaugh took advantage of legitimate draft deferments to avoid getting drafted. But he broke no laws.

On the other hand, Clinton did break draft laws. Clinton is a bona fide draft dodger. He did it by lying to his draft liaison officer about his enrollment in school in England.

I don't know, your definition of what "egregious nonsense" is may be different from the vast majority of what this blog's readers think. You seem to be engaged in cultivating straw man arguments that drive readers away from the point at hand.

To wit: Of course there was no chance he would use the same analysis to included thug-rap and Islamic hate-mongering as forces behind other acts of murder.

Which suggests that the President has absolutely no moral ground to be outraged over the words of hard-right conservative figures and groups until he cracks down on rap artists and Islamic figures. It's an argument that is reminiscent of how some Whites believe Blacks to have no moral ground to be outraged about a variety of issues until they "clean up their own nest" -- or in other words, crack down on their own people.

But he could have safely mentioned the unending stream of murderous violence that pours out of Hollywood. He missed his chance to blame Robert DiNiro in Taxi Driver, a movie that depicts a deranged nut with several guns stalking a politician in NY City. And this is another straw argument that is designed to move people away from the involvement of hard-right conservative speech and focus them on innocuous red herrings such as....a movie.

How many assassination movies have come out of Hollywood and other film venues? How many offer graphic displays of bullets hitting their human targets? So are you telling us that Hollywood is actually to blame for the events that transpired at that Safeway in Tucson? That the real problem isn't the ever present dog whistle of right-wing antagonism against "foreign" individuals and political ideologies, but instead Hollywood glamorization of violence?

This is all a bunch of egregious nonsense. You traffic in it and expect people to line up and take it all in like free turkeys come Christmas.

"LAA is concerned mostly with issues that do not interest me."

She probably wouldn't care about your lack of interest in the Black male/Black female dynamic and the "War of Black Women". You're a white guy and I suppose that automatically gives you a pass on such things, who knows?

  35. maria,

When it comes to media practices, the only thing you can say is -- Monkey See, Monkey Do.

In the last couple of years a few words and phrases have been killed with over-use.

Horrific, Iconic, Not So Much, Meme, and, as of today, it has been officially declared that "blood libel" is the newest member of the group.

Even though the newest users of the phrase are using it with the right concepts in mind, there are nevertheless, critics who realize the term itself is the basis for more debate. I think that's good.

With respect to the magic n-word, it appears the debate is closed. Blacks can say it anytime, anywhere, but whites can never use it, even in novels written in 1875.

Whereas dopes like uptownsteve -- who really lives outside NY City because the level of black crime drove him out -- have stated threatened to physically attack me if I were to use the magic n-word in their presence, no such nonsense will emerge from a debate about "blood libel" because, well, because we know the people in this debate don't settle mouth fights with guns.

Frankly, when discussing the impact of the spoken word, the written word and film editing, debaters should look to the efforts of Jews and Jewish organizations that combat anti-Semitism.

But the liberal anti-free-speech crowd are inevitably struck with amnesia at just that moment.

And by the way, Obama has no moral compass, as his efforts to destroy American jobs through legislation proves.

Meanwhile, if you believe that radio gasbags are the motive for behavior that goes past the voting booth, then by extension, you believe that movies, thug-rap and Islamic hate-mongering are also powerful persuaders.

Why should a relatively prosperous upper-middle-class family care about inequality? There are lots of reasons, but here's the most personal one: that's our money the very rich are taking! Based on Internal Revenue Service figures, if middle- and upper-middle-class families had maintained the same share of American productivity that they held in 1980, they would be making an average of $12,500 more per year.

The massive redistribution of income from the middle classes to the rich over the last 30 years is like a malignant tumor that doesn't appear on the surface but eventually destroys the whole body. Every one of the 90 percent of Americans who makes less than $114,000 a year should be aware of this – and they should be angry.

  47. is it nice that hobama has added another bankster/pharma ceo to his regime????

On the same day President Barack Obama tapped William Daley to be his new chief of staff, the former J.P Morgan Chase & Co. (JPM) executive exercised restricted stock in the investment bank valued at $2.7 million.

Daley, 62, had overseen Midwestern operations for J.P. Morgan before Obama named him Thursday to help his administration as it attempts to reset relations with the private sector and works to grow the economy. Obama has hailed Daley's business experience.

On the same day he was named to the new post, Daley acquired 61,264 J.P. Morgan shares, after subtracting shares he surrendered to cover tax liabilities, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission released Monday. At Monday's closing price of $43.40 for each J.P. Morgan share, the shares are worth $2.7 million.

All told, Daley now has about $7.6 million in J.P. Morgan stock, or 175,678 shares.

In addition to his work at J.P Morgan, Daley also sat on the boards of airplane maker Boeing Co. (BA) and pharmaceutical firm Abbott Laboratories (ABT). He has stock in each of those companies and it's unclear whether he'll get to keep those shares when he joins the White House. Spokesmen from Boeing and Abbott weren't immediately available to comment.

  49. what the hell is nice & uplifting about hobama and his wall st posse???

they have just begun to show us all how brutally mean and disheartening they can be!!!

In the intervening 24 months, the Right has achieved a near-miraculous comeback, a reversal of fortune that could not have happened without considerable assistance from Mr. Obama. By positioning his administration to the Right of center from the vey beginning, becoming more intimately identified with Wall Street bankers even than Bush, and waging relentless war on the Left half of his party, Obama reduced fellow Democrats to a state of demoralized confusion, leading to catastrophic defeat. Defeat, that is, for the party, but not for the president, who has at last arrived in his comfort zone.

”Sperling and Daley are seasoned operatives in subverting government to private purposes, having made their bones in Bill Clinton’s administration.”

Indeed, in order for Obama to reach his comfort zone, it was necessary that the Democrats be defeated. Only then could New Democrat Obama’s collaboration with the GOP in furtherance of corporate rule appear to be an act of statesmanship, a grand compromise (as the tax deal was pitched) in the interest of orderly government by the “grownups.”

With Obama’s appointment of JP Morgan Chase executive William Daley as his chief of staff and Gene Sperling to head the National Economic Council, the White House is tooled to coordinate even more seamlessly with Wall Street. Both are seasoned operatives in subverting government to private purposes, having made their bones in Bill Clinton’s administration, where Daley was the indispensable man in passing the Clinton/Republican NAFTA bill despite the opposition of 60 percent of Democrats in the House. Both are now rich banksters specializing in moving effortlessly from the boardroom to wherever the public’s money is kept.

Cops: Gang rape of girl, 14, recorded on cell phone
4 suspects charged in Stickney attack

WGN By Pat Curry and Nancy Loo

    WGN-TV

    7:34 a.m. CST, January 13, 2011

Four Stickney teenagers gang-raped a 14-year-old girl and recorded the attacks on a cell phone, police said this morning.

Alex Picallo, 16, Majeed Khalifeh, 18, and Jonathan Leanos, 19, were charged Wednesday with two counts each of aggravated criminal sexual assault in the incident at Leanos’ Stickney home in the 3900 block of Wesley on Saturday, police said. Picallo was charged as an adult.

A fourth suspect, Vicente Hernandez, 22, of Cicero, was similarly charged today and is scheduled to appear at a bond hearing in the Bridgeview courthouse later today.

Picallo was ordered held on $500,000 bail Tuesday. Khalifeh and Leanos appeared in court in Bridgeview on Wednesday and were ordered held in lieu of $600,000 and $750,000 bail, respectively.

Leanos met the victim, who does not live in Stickney, online on the MySpace site last summer, and they met several times before Leanos took the victim to his house Saturday, police said.

When she refused his request for sex, Leanos took her cell phone and forced her to have sex, police said. He then drove her to pick up Khalifeh and Hernandez, and they all returned to Leanos' house, where they were met by Picallo, police continued. Leanos told the girl to have sex with his friends, and cell phones were used to record the assault.

The girl's parents brought her to the police station Sunday.

Police do not believe the suspects posted the videos on the Internet.

"Over 90 percent of Blacks voted for him. We are his most loyal base and the White House and Congress have turned their backs to our community in our most pressing time. There has to be a way to sync those two things; those who vote for you deserve to be rewarded."

Tavis Smiley's message appears to be more readily received by the African American community than it was two years ago, but he still faces some challeneges to its total acceptance. Now that black America has seen that President Obama is not as perfect as they originally believed him to be, there are more within our ranks willing to ask if there is a better way to achieve our political ends...

    50 Cent millions
Rapper nets $8.7M on tweet feat

    By KAJA WHITEHOUSE

    January 11, 2011

Rapper 50 Cent made $8.7 million yesterday -- by tweeting.

The 35-year-old celeb, aka Curtis Jackson, helped pop the shares of a no-name penny stock company he's invested in by 290 percent yesterday after chatting it up this weekend on Twitter, the social-networking site.

"You can double your money right now. Just get what you can afford," Jackson tweeted about H&H Imports, a money-losing venture out of Clearwater, Fla., that owns TV Goods, a marketing firm recently founded by Kevin Harrington.

Harrington is best known for his role on ABC's reality show "Shark Tank," which lets entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to potential backers.

"They are no joke get in now," Jackson told his 3.8 million Twitter followers about TV Goods, which Harrington founded in 2009. It merged with H&H in May.

Jackson received 30 million shares of H&H in a private placement last October, including a series of warrants granting him the opportunity to cash in as the stock rises: at 15 cents, 25 cents or -- no kidding -- 50 cents.

For some of the warrants, he only has to put up 10 cents a share, according to a recent regulatory filing.

Earlier this month, Jackson also "personally endorsed" a line of mobile audio products TV Goods had gained marketing rights to that are made by another Florida company, Sleek Audio, H&H said.

Jackson talked up the headphones when he appeared on TV last week from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Jackson's reps didn't return a request for comment.

Of course, Jackson's hype won't fix the cash-flow problems at H&H.

The company lost $1.3 million last quarter on revenues of just $292,933. As of Sept. 30, the company has accumulated a deficit of $3.3 million and in March its auditor raised questions about its ability "to continue as a going concern," the company has said in financial documents.

    H&H closed at 39 cents yesterday, up 29 cents, boosting Jackson's 30 million-share stake by $8.7 million.

Figueroa's recollection of her relationship with Loughner is shedding more light on the suspect's troubled life, one she says was devoid of any sort of parental figure.

"He had a difficult relationship with his parents," said Figueroa. "They would never let me come in the house. I couldn't understand why."

"He had definite dysfunction in his family," she said. "His father as far as I know worked a lot and kind of picked on [Loughner]. He basically didn't have parent figures. It was like having roommates for him. He lived there and [his parents] were just sort of there."

Figueroa, who didn't specify how long she dated Loughner, said that she eventually left him because of his anger management problems.

"He used to scare me sometimes," she said. "He'd make me feel uncomfortable. He'd get really mad, clench his fist and kind of have a little tantrum, he'd flail his arms and walk off."

Another former girlfriend of Loughner's, Kelsey Hawkes, told CBS' "The Early Show" that the Loughner who allegedly opened fire Saturday, killing six and injuring 14, is not the same person she dated for nearly nine months.

  75. The outcome of Mind Control:

50 Cent silent, H&H shares fall

    By KAJA WHITEHOUSE

    January 13, 2011

Rapper 50 Cent has gone mum on his penny-stock pet project, H&H Imports, not sending a single tweet to his 3.8 million followers on the subject in the last 48 hours, during which time the Clearwater, Fla., company has seen its shares tumble 36 percent.

That's quite a turnaround from Monday when the rap star, aka Curtis Jackson, helped H&H to a 290 percent jump after using his Twitter account over last weekend to make bullish calls on the company.

Shares soared to 39 cents from 10 cents, but without the help of the 35-year-old celeb, H&H slipped 23 percent Tuesday and 17 percent yesterday -- to 25 cents a share.

"HNHI is the right investment for me it may or may not be right for u! Do ur homework," Jackson tweeted late Monday, his last word on the subject. Jackson owns both warrants and shares of H&H.

Jackson is a director of Sleek Audio, a headset maker that has a marketing deal with TV Goods, an H&H subsidiary, according to federal and state filings. H&H, owned by Kevin Harrington, has yet to turn a profit. Harrington declined to comment yesterday.

  77. Maria and Mell - while Agree that Obama's speech may have overplayed theme of our secular religion of 'patriotism' and 'American-ism' (hell is the even a real world). and it would have been a better speech if he would spoke of our global humanity.

However, As you pointed mell, that was smarter move on his part. Political leaders don't get too far by reminding folks in America that we're not the only people on this little green mud ball.

Maria, though I understand your point of view, its not uncommon for Black and Latin home goings to be a little ruckus. Also, its no different (thought slightly more muted) than the uplifting tone of Paul Wellstone's memorial service. I think it struck somewhat of a balance of mourning our loss and reminding us of our hopeful tomorrow.

Alicia - I hate to throw ice water on your typical 'Obama = Anti-Christ' tirades, but if you read between the lines, Smiley's obsession with Obama has little to do with 'Black issues'.

Tavis Smiley has some good points to take the President on about (though many are overblown and play into the political naivete of many so-called 'Progressives'). However, the main beef is that Smiley simply has been feeling snubbed by the O-man for 2 years. First, Smiley was pissed that Obama didn't attend his Black Agenda Forum back in '08 and instead chose to announce his run somewhere else on the same day. He also feels rather snubbed that Obama has not graced his show. Also, Smiley was a big Clintonite and was one of the few Black media figures to get behind Hillary.

In other words, Tavis Smiley's gripe is mainly about Tavis Smiley's wounded ego. He may hit on a few good points about Obama's shortcoming, but lets keep that in mind.

no one is more amoral or murderous than hobama...including jared!!!

check that global body count u blind bimbo!!!

This shrinking of space and opportunity for middle and working class Americans is a national phenomenon at the root of much of the populist surge occurring throughout different communities. In 2006 the American electorate voted out Republicans for the jobless “recovery” of the 2000’s and a never-ending war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now, in 2010, the Democrats have been voted out for a job loss “recovery” while the country continues to spend hundreds of billions in Iraq and Afghanistan. This most recent action to “get the bums out” is most often connected to the largely white populist movement of the Tea Party, yet the city of Washington DC has also had its own populist revolt led largely by African Americans. The Washington DC electoral uprising ousted the sitting mayor, Adrian Fenty, who seemed removed from and hostile to the everyday struggles of the average Washingtonian

People of all races are tired with politics and economics as usual. The American people have shown the willingness to vote the “bums out” but the problem is the policies that reward the elite, weaken the middle class, and increase the disfranchisement of the poor persist. State and city jurisdictions across the country are facing mass cuts in housing, education, and other social services that provide opportunities for middle and working class families. The newly elected congressional Republican majority, who proclaim to care about the federal deficit and working class people, has made its top priority to permanently extend the Bush tax cuts which will cost 4 trillion dollars over the next ten years and will disproportionately reward the richest Americans. This is a prescription to continue the worst of contemporary Republican politics, express concern about the deficit and working Americans while enacting policies that increase the deficit and decrease opportunities for middle class and poorer Americans. The new Republican majority in Congress is driven to further concentrate the wealth of the nation into the hands of the wealthiest, to cut government investment into working families, and to drive the country into greater economic unsustainability.

I operate on the assumption that Obama is a purposeful, talented, and extremely effective center-right politician straight out of the Clinton Democratic Leadership Council mold who is determined to shape all of the public sector to finance capital’s advantage. He has chosen the best men for the damnable job.

With Wall Street’s hegemony at the commanding heights of the world’s sole superpower unchallenged, the crisis of finance capital has become a crisis of the U.S. state and a threat to every other capitalist economy and state on the planet. But of course, Wall Street calls that an opportunity. Not an opportunity, mind you, to invest in anything remotely productive. The team that brought us NAFTA in order to export the U.S. manufacturing sector, and destroyed the financial regulatory infrastructure of the New Deal so that Wall Street could dominate every aspect of American economic and political life, has no interest in productive enterprise or good jobs creation.

And neither does Barack Obama – or else he wouldn’t have appointed Daley and Sperling or the 2009 crew. All of which should be perfectly obvious, except to the mush-brains who are still sipping from vinegary old bottles of ObamaL’aid

What would Dr. King do? It’s that time of year, and always a good time to ask that question. We can begin to answer it by saying what the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who was assassinated on April 4, 1968 would NOT be doing: he would not be erecting a protective barrier around Barack Obama, the First Black President of the United States, but would instead confront him. He would not shrink from denouncing and opposing Obama’s wars. Dr. King would never passively tolerate the wholesale consumption of the American state by Wall Street. He would not have stood by for four decades while the United States created a system of mass Black incarceration that has now been dubbed the New Jim Crow. And we know he would have found it impossible to sit still while George Bush and then Barack Obama turned public education into a stifling exercise in learning-for-the-test

Dr. King would have been unceasing in his opposition to mass Black incarceration. In early 1968, King declared: “It is incontestable and deplorable that Negroes have committed crimes; but they are derivative crimes. They are born of the greater crimes of the white society.”

He would have been moved to action by the U.S. Supreme Court's decision allowing corporations to be treated as having the same rights of persons. “Property,” said Dr. King, “is intended to serve life, and no matter how much we surround it with rights and respect, it has no personal being. It is part of the earth man walks on. It is not man.”

Plus, we know MLK was a Democratic socialist, because he said so.

Dr. King, the intellectual, the philosopher, made himself clear on the value and uses of education back in 1947, when he was a student at Morehouse College, in Atlanta. “The function of education,” said the very young man, “is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” It is inconceivable that King would have permitted No Child Left Behind and its destructive derivatives to wreck the learning experiences of the nation's children without a fight.

Dr. King would actively oppose Barack Obama's policies because, as he said: “He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.”

Of course, because it's all about how Whites feel when confronted with the uglier aspects of their collective culture.

Hmmm. I didn't see this post till now.

Anyway, you're as wrong this time as you are at all other times. It's not that whites are above criticism. It's that the dopey criticisms and indictments you attempt to hand down are so many miles from reality.

And it's about assholes such as yourself who find ways of assigning total blame to Blacks for their own condition in order to free Whites of the collective guilt over previous morally criminal behavior towards Blacks in a collective sense.

I see. It's obviously impossible for you to see black society and black culture for what it is. You can only see it in relation to whites and white society. You see things through your personal lens of racism which omits the fact that only in a few places in the world do blacks actually get to truly test their abilities and then thrive.

If there are any multi-millionaire black athletes in Africa, playing for African sports teams, I'm unaware of them. Same for musicians and entertainers.

Of course we know there are no brilliant engineers or scientists in Africa opening doors to new technologies.

It is clearly beyond your grasp to understand how asians have come to the US and become the envy of most other Americans. Based on your assessment of things, it's clear you do not understand why Hong Kong is as prosperous as it is. Same goes for Singapore.

Even Vietnam, after enduring war for 25 years, is rebuilding -- slowly, because communism always fails -- and doing all it can to get its products into American markets.

Here's a bet for you. Australia is now suffering from massive floods. I will bet you that in about a year, the flooded region will have returned to a condition close to its pre-flood state.

I will further bet you that a year from now, conditions in Haiti will be as bad or worse than they are today.

    What do you think?

  98. Maria, home going is a common name used for a funeral services in many churches. (i.e. going back home to be with the Lord). For example, my uncle's funeral turned into a full blown because my dad's eldest brother is a Baptist preacher lead the service into singing and praise. That's the only thing I was saying.

I wasn't saying you had to defend Obama or that you don't agree with me, just engaging in a debate. We can agree to disagree, I'm remaining neutral.

is it nice to pretend that tavis' ego has anything to do with hobama's horridly racist and elitist betrayals????????

Whose pretending? Don't act as if these paid squawkers aren't pissed that they're no longer the same league as Obama. In the end, liberal activist intellectuals like Smiley, Jesse Jackson, Ralph Nader and to a lesser degree folks like Cornell West are pissed off that this skinny mulatto guy came out of nowhere and by virtue of a) taking the white house from two political titans and b) skillfully moving many progressive ideas forward without falling into many traps of self sabotage have made them virtually irrelevant except to their own niche of true believers.

i do not share your cave hallucinations!!!!

When debating Black supporters of President Obama, there often comes a point where even the most fervent Obamites can find no coherent defense for the president’s pro-Wall Street and militaristic policies, when his refusal to even consider race-targeted solutions to race-based problems becomes simply indefensible. Typically, at that point, the Obama supporter will play the psychological card. The advent of the First Black President, they say, has been of incalculable psychological benefit to Black people, especially to Black children, who can now project themselves into an infinity of possibilities because a Black family is in the White House. Hallelujah!

This psychological argument is the Obamite’s last bastion of defense, especially the “What about the children?” trump card. Yet there is mounting and disturbing evidence that the psychological harm done to Black people by Obama’s presidency may be even greater than the economic and political damage. Barack Obama’s presidency is driving millions of African Americans insane – stone, cold out of their minds

Jesse Jackson didn't run twice in the 80's? Nader hasn't ran vanity campaigns for President at least since 1996? Or were you living an isolated hut in Mongolia during the whole Bush/Gore 2000 campaign?

The difference, Obama ran smart and won - while those two either didn't make it past the primaries (Jackson) or became increasingly bad jokes the more times they ran (Nader).

LAC good point about why leaders don't stress internationlism. And I agree with your assessment of Tavis. I heard him speak once in person and he talked about how much he loved capitalism and when he was challenged and it was pointed out that racism was a function of capitalism he couldn't defend his position.

Tavis is smart enough but he is not a real pundit.

But to be fair he actually nailed Obama, maybe for the wrong reasons but he nailed him nevertheless.

And Tavis does deserve props for calling out Al Sharpton. Sharpton did meet with the president and it did appear that the president used Sharpton to hush his detractors. Sharpton has a right to deny that is what he was doing but appearances in this instance were not good.

AB your posts from MOther JOnes and Black Agenda were on the mark.

Or possibly you meant because Haiti is Haiti, a nation of about 10 million (half the population of Australia), of which roughly 50% believe in voodoo, that a curse has been cast on the western end of Hispaniola and that the curse will unfairly prevent the rebuilding of Haiti despite the multi-national effort to haul the country out of the ditch it's in.

    Amen.

This moron slappy bases all of his assertions on the notion that whites are civiized and blacks are savages.

Brisbane will take years to recover. The city is underwater and it's residents and businesses will need goverment assistance and humanitarian donations to relocate and ultimately rebuild.

Look at the condition of the former Soviet Union after the collapse of Communist rule.

Chaos, poverty, violent crime and economic ruin.
