"Black Like Me."

I have to confess (and lord forgive me for this one) but I can't watch Cornel West for one minute. Every time I see fam on television I change the channel. I have heard that he is a smart guy, and that he sometimes says some deep things, but I will never know, because......well....I just can't watch or listen to him. I know that many of you have a predilection for all things West so you will have to help me out with this one. Please tell me why I should force myself to start listening to him. "Otay"? (Stop it field)

Anyway, I notice that my man has been in the news of late because, much to the delight of wingnuts, he has had some not too flattering things to say about O, and it has started an interesting debate among us black folks about what it means to be truly black.

For the record, O's upbringing and the way he chooses to carry himself should not define his blackness or lack of it. We have to judge him by his actions as president for all the people of these divided states who comes to the office from the unique position of being able to feel our pain.

This is a good discussion to have on Malcolm's birthday; is O in the house? Personally, I don't think so. I think he visits it quite often and is comfortable when he is in there, but that is not where his heart is. I think his heart is outside in the fields. ( I think)

But I want to ask Mr. West to put his Ivy League mind to work and tell me exactly what he would want his O ness to do to help black A-merry-ca. I want to know what policies he would implement and how he would go about getting it done. I want to know how he would better use the "bully pulpit" to (if I may get a little colloquial) hook us up.

I know what I would like O to do: Get our troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq, use the "bully pulpit" to talk more about urban issues such as education, and turn Eric Holder loose on some of those Wall Street crooks. Yes, I am pissed that he extended the Bush tax cuts. Yes, I am pissed that he kept Gitmo open. And, yes, I am pissed that ddn't go far enough on health care reform and with the stimulus package.

Still, having said that, I have to acknowledge that he at least tried with health care, there was some Wall Street reform, and a little stimulus package is better than none at all.

I am not sure what you Negroes who were waiting on the Magic Negro expected. O can't work miracles and make your lives better. I hate to sound like a conservative, but government can only do so much. If you thought O was going to get into office and your lives were going to change overnight, you have another thing coming. Urban terrorist are still going to rob and steal, greedy polititicksters on the local and national level are still going to line their pockets, first. And the corporate machine of greed that drives A-merry-ca isn't going anywhere. In short, it's business as usual in A-merry-ca. If there is going to be any change it's going to have to come from within each and every individual who really wants it.

I thought that a - supposedly- smart man like Cornel West would know that.

Now lets be honest field , if the brother was not in the house He would have most likely been linked to some scandal. The Potus is selected and not elected. The man was put in that position to galvanize the good white folk. Mission accomplished. It is as if reconstruction is happening all over again.I do get pissed off when I realize that the majority of the criticism is because he has a brown hue. I just wish some of these young ivy league Brothers and Sisters would give up the big salaries and get into politics , I am just saying it is what it is.

  3. West's talking points create a presidency that values the future of Black America beyond the arc of Obama's tenure..

West was also right about Obama's inner circle not one FREE BLACK MAN in it

West was right about his advisors..Now Jewish Lobby groups are demonizing Obama but of course the one group that will always support him is Black Folks ( oops I better be careful Wayne aka FN will report me to the ADL)

Obama fails to understand Black Agenda=American Agenda

  5. FN,
His peers fail to hold West in check.(keep him out of the crazy) I mean the ones who mostly agree with him. They should have done so 20 years ago.

I think many Negroes and some white folk expected the revisiting of The Great Society. Much of that failed, because as you said, "greedy polititicksters on the local and national level are still going to line their pockets, "

People like West let wishful thinking get the better of them. The dominance of TV and campaign financing means no one gets to be President unless they are acceptable to the plutocrats. So I think he's genuinely miffed, more at himself for being fooled.

But I think he is still helping Obama. By whining like this, he's also making a public spectacle to fool white folk that Obama is not actually a radical black nationalist socialist but rather 'too white'. That will help him in 2012 with white voters.

While the public distancing certainly helps Barry with middle class whites, hispanics don't care, and blacks and progs aren't going anywhere.

Of course Cornel really is just self-centered enough to pout publicly about access. I honestly think Barry, for all his guile, genuinely understands this guy's a poser. Good for him. All those poor freshman who've had to humor the professor over the years may understand.

  8. West was right of course about Obama it is expected Obama's apologists will claim otherwise..

You say But I want to ask Mr. West to put his Ivy League mind to work and tell me exactly what he would want his O ness to do to help black A-merry-ca.

But most Blacks are middle class and doing now worse than any other group out there. There is no more crime in the black community than in others and educationally Blacks are now worse than others. Now this is what UTS says. I don't know the stats. So why then this statement. UTS seems to know his stuff.

I understand the disillusionment of the black nationalists that Obama (sensibly for him) went with the Jews, not the blacks. It's probably a good thing for the rest of us though. As a place to live, New York seems a lot preferable to Zimbabwe.

Black women should still turn out for Obama in 2012. I guess the main question is whether Obama can be spun as black-nationalist enough that black men will turn out for him again. Maybe not, but if he can pick up/retain enough other Left groups he can still squeak home against a weak Republican opponent. And the GOP field looks pretty weak.

Is Obama really just uncomfortable around blacks? He didn't appear to be having too good a time on the family's Grand Tour of Africa. Judging by his executive hires, he's most at ease around Jews and white women. Quite the contrast with the affable Bill Clinton, a Southern white.

West bitterly describes Obama as “a black mascot of Wall Street oligarchs and a black puppet of corporate plutocrats. And now he has become head of the American killing machine and is proud of it.”

Anyone who criticizes Obama becomes marginalized, so say goodbye to any further influence from Cornel West.

West is an egoist who finally got truth after he was shunned and disposed of when he was no longer of use to the President. Liberals will now slander him for being a truth-teller much like Bruce Bartlett was slandered by neo-cons for repeatedly telling us all W was a government-growing fool.

The closer you are the to the truth, the more fercious the blowback.

And to Rudy, what does it matter what he does for "Black America". Do you think it would affect the percentage of blacks who are going to vote for Obama in 2012? 95%? 98%? He has done nothing for blacks, will continue to do nothing, but, since he has sold himself as "black", black voters would rather be screwed by him than by anyone else.

I read West is upset about Obama snapping on him after an event and also the fact he wasn't invited to the big bash in 2009.

The question I have for West, who's playing your salary? Poor Blacks, or the same Jews he says Obama is in bed with?

  17. I am tired of the pontificating of folks like West, Dyson, Chomsky and Smiley. They’ve been in the political/media nexus when I was going through puberty (hell Chomsky and Nader have been 'fighting the man' since my father was in diapers.) And their beef with Obama has little do with issues anymore. For all the stuff they can gripe about, Obama's done plenty of good.

Its about no longer being the be all & end all of Black political thought on the Left (Black Political Thought on the Right is an oxymoron if there ever was one.)

Of all people to point out the hypocrisy and flimsy nature of the Smile/West/Dyson out cry was none other than Al Sharpton. Yes, Rev. Inc himself, who built is career on self-inflating moral outrage, pointed out that while Obama is far from perfect (and just barely passes as good in many prog circles) and needs to be pushed. But, its the job of Black intellectuals, civic leaders and activists, not the President to shape and push an agenda. The problem isn’t Obama, its the personal agendas and egos of so-called Black leaders.

In Bush, we had 8 years of the most inept, corrupt Presidency since Warren G. Harding and possible the most racist since Red Ink Ronnie and guys like West and Smiley don’t have squat to show for a mass movement. And now, its Obama’s fault they didn’t step their A-game up for 8-10 years. As we say in my family – Negro Please!!

  18. Anonymous9:46 PM

Obama knows that his field is politics and West's is academics. If Obama had chosen academics, he would be talking like West, and if West had chosen politics, he would be acting like Obama (and 'dissing' the hypothetical radical academic Obama).

What is a plus in politics is a negative in academics, and vice versa. Academia is far left, and so West has much to gain by his BAD BROTHA antics. Priviliged white leftists wanna flatter themselves that they don't just go for uncle toms but for real badass black radicals, and West, though a phony punkass fool, plays that role to the hilt. Mixing bad brotha antics with intellectualism, he flatters both himself and white radicals that a black guy can be both mind and soul.

It's the radical chic thing. Since success in academia means flattering the vanity of white 'radicals', West has played it smart and risen very high despite his low intellectual credentials.

Politics depends on winning the votes of many people who are not radical, and Obama cannot play West's game.

He could do alot more, but so can the rest of the clowns in Congress. Yes, Obama is far from perfect, but what about the CBC and the rest of the Democrats? (the Republicans are just evil incarnate right now, so we'll leave that alone.)

Last time I checked, the only vote against the Afghanistan action was Barbara Lee. Where is the critique of the Dems hiding under their desks when Obama pushed to close Gitmo the first time? What about Dems bailing on the public option (Obama didn't pursue it because DLC blue dogs were too scared to do it.) What about the stimulus? Where were the Dems when the President needed the support?

Look, I personally think Obama is too much like Clinton with a tan. Fine, I can dig it, DLC Corporatist who happens to be a great crisis manager and shrew pol - just not my bag.

But just like with Clinton, the angry lefty types can't piss on the man when he does wrong then flip him the bird (or and hide) when he does something right and/or courageous. With a 'base' like West, who needs Republicans?

"In Bush, we had 8 years of the most inept, corrupt Presidency since Warren G. Harding and possible the most racist since Red Ink Ronnie"

Bush was pretty inept in a lot of ways, but his adminstration cannot be called corrupt with a straight face.

We are currently living through the most corrupt Presidential adminstration in U.S. history. One that has siezed businesses, tranferred untold billions to political allies, practiced selective enforcement of the law, told businesses which states they can build factories in, has tried to require all companies doing business with the federal government to report the politcal donations of its employees as part of the bid process (!), has started an illegal war without consulting congress, passed an unconstitututional health care mandate then exempted thousands of politcally connected unions and businesses, and has developed sickening crony relationships with businesses such as GE. The first act of this adminstration was to an issue an executive order allowing them to ignore Freedom of Information requests. Staffers routinely hold meetings at remote locations so as to avoid reporting requirements regarding who they are meeting with.

The Obama administration is the least transparent most overtly criminal adminstration in the history of the Republic.

Obama's big problem is that he will have to run on his record. Lots of people, including me, voted for him last time, hoping to see some real changes in the country's direction. Instead, we're still blowing up every mud hut and goat in Afghanistan (and we've even expanded our campaign of blowing shit up with missiles that cost more than their targets in Libya) , the homeland security bureaucracy has gotten worse and more intrusive over time ("Sir, I'm going to touch your leg now."), we've effectively backed our biggest banks with unlimited taxpayer funds (unofficially--sort of like Fannie and Freddie before they went bankrupt and we bailed them out). Even electing a black president hasn't made our national discussion on race any less dumb. Our media is perhaps even more co-opted and dishonest now than under Bush. Our massive deficit and visibly declining empire are now much more massive and declining much faster, respectively.

Obama has been nothing short of a disaster.

Everything I said is true, yet very little is written about it. Obama is actively protected and aided by the media. If Bush had tried 1/10th of what Obama has seemingly gotten away with, the media would have made sure his head was on pike a long time ago.

  56. Field you asked some good questions with the post. Frankly the President has shown that his administration has a blatant disregard for the will of the citizens of fourteen states in the union and because of this, more Black and Latino and White men will go to jail for being non violent drug offenders.

If our President cared about Black people, he'd eliminate the War on Drugs all together. But since his administration started going after MEDICAL marijuana dispensaries in states where they are approved, just goes to show that he is just the exact same as every President before him on this matter. Even Bush snorted lines yet endorsed the War on Drugs what a group of jerks!

"its the job of Black intellectuals, civic leaders and activists, not the President to shape and push an agenda. The problem isn’t Obama, its the personal agendas and egos of so-called Black leaders.

LAC this is the issue at bottom. NO matter what Obama does we have to figure out to carve out an existence in the middle of US imperialism, or how to change the system and institute a fair and humane one. (and thats not utopian its possible)

I agree that real leaders have to at least try to start a movement or point folks in the right direction.

West told the truth about Obama but his problem is that he has never had the courage of his convictions. Its why he allowed himself to be lulled to sleep by Obamas's slickness.

Obama has always been a petite bourgeous panderer to the ruling class. He is a true believer in US imperialism and has advanced their agenda as well as any president has.

I liken him to Clinton who pushed through a more right ward agenda while we were listening to him play his saxophone and eat collard greens. Even Reagan couldnt get rid of welfare which slick Willie almost succeeded in doing away with completely.

Obama is similar esp for black folks who basked in the glow of the black presidency that offered them and the working class nothing more than the glow of his pearly whites, as he passed us to do the bidding of the ruling class.

To Field's point I had no expectations of him. I absolutely expected him to do what he has done. And I am on record as having said that Obama is just another bourgeosie politician no more and no less.

    http://blog.4president.org/2008/2007/11/in-remarks-at-d.html

But the question you're going to have to ask yourself when you vote this year and next is this:

    "What's next for America?"

We are in a defining moment in our history. Our nation is at war. The planet is in peril. The dream that so many generations fought for feels as if it's slowly slipping away. We are working harder for less. We've never paid more for health care or for college. It's harder to save and it's harder to retire. And most of all we've lost faith that our leaders can or will do anything about it.

We were promised compassionate conservatism and all we got was Katrina and wiretaps.

We were promised a uniter, and we got a President who could not even lead the half of the country that voted for him.

We were promised a more ethical and more efficient Washington, and instead we have a town that is more corrupt and more wasteful than it was before. And the only mission that was ever accomplished is to use fear and falsehood to take this country to a war that should have never been authorized and should have never been waged.

    Like FN I want the following;

: Get our troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq, use the "bully pulpit" to talk more about urban issues such as education, and turn Eric Holder loose on some of those Wall Street crooks. Yes, I am pissed that he extended the Bush tax cuts. Yes, I am pissed that he kept Gitmo open. And, yes, I am pissed that ddn't go far enough on health care reform and with the stimulus package.

See this is why I didn't want a black President..what good is having a black President if he/she is going to pander to the right after they are elected?

So you really want to spend $10.00 a gallon on gas eh?

The invasion of Iraq was and the continued occupation is about OIL. Powell warned that if we break Iraq, we own it and that's what has happened. Saddam for all his brutality kept warring factions off each other and maintained relative order. What you have over there now is a slowly brewing civil conflict that only the US military presence prevents from exploding into a civil war. All sitting on the 4th largest reservoir of oil in the world.

I'd like to see all of that too but Obama first and foremost is a politician. He has to pick his public battles wisely..

He scored big with getting Bin Laden which now gives him leverage to downsize troops in Afghanistan.

The big issue is the economy. The stuff you're complaining about is second tier. Closing Gitmo? C'mon.

According to you and many previous comments, everything is going good and getting better because you were told so, despite all facts to the contrary. Unemployment has decreased, things are going fine. So Obama can stand on this record.

  70. Cornel West?

Yeah, a former professor at Princeton. About a decade ago he was fired.

He wrote a few books, one of which was titled "Race Matters."

In the opening of the book, which was published in 1993, he writes about trying to get a cab in NY City on a September afternoon at 5 pm. He was on Park Avenue on the northbound side -- the side heading toward Harlem, where he was going. He was angry because empty cabs kept passing him by. Ignoring him, refusing to stop for him.

He was mad. He was raging mad because he felt the cab drivers were ignoring him out of racism, which is probably true.

What he did not mention was the race of the cab drivers. As those of us who live here know, most of the cab drivers are black.

After failing to get a cab, the obviously elitist West broke down and took the subway.

He later commented to his wife how he was thinking they should move to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and then thought of attending a revival meeting in Harlem that was being run by Reverent Jeremiah Wright.

In other words, West have been living in an alternate reality for a long, long time.

But, his comments about Obama appear, for once, to have hit the nail on the head. Unfortunately, it's hard to take a guy seriously when he looks like Don King.

Ah, the delusion lives on. Sharpton has a clever way with non-sequiturs. His fans -- like you -- don't understand that his debating style involves sidestepping and fact avoidance.

He depends on throwing around myths that blacks believe while never admitting what everyone knows is true.

Case in point. He knows he and Tawana cooked up her lies, and he knows she wasn't raped or harmed in any way by the people Sharpton lied about.

But when it comes to dealing with whites who are accused -- in public, not court -- of harming blacks, Sharpton fans are huge supporters of his lies, because it's emotionally satisfying to hear him give voice to what they'd all like to say, even though it's understood he's lying.

  75. In 2008 Obama was the candidate without a record. No political achievements, no political accomplishments, no significant political mis-steps, therefore no reputation to impede his campaign.

Now he's got a record -- and it stinks. The facts are stark.

Obama has spend TRILLIONS and aims to spend TRILLIONS more, borrowing all of it.

He is steering the country toward a currency devaluation. For all the jabber about the IMF, no one seems to notice that if we stay on the Obama course, the IMF will be visiting the White House to restructure America's debt around re-election time.

Moreover, with yesterday's statement that he wants Israel to return to its pre-1967 borders, even the biggest morons in this country have to admit his Islamic roots are showing and he has declared himself a palestinian for the duration of his presidency.

He wants to give money to the Islamic countries of north Africa and the middle east even though they are in the process of choosing new dictators rather than converting to democracy.

Egypt is now run by its military. Thus ends the Egyptian move toward democracy.

Clearly he wants Islamic nations to maintain their hate for non-muslims.

  77. hathor,

Virtually all inflation in recent months is due to the increase of prices of gasoline and food. Nothing else.

Gasoline prices are up for reasons beyond the control of any one person or organization. But Obama could send strong signals to the oil market by giving oil companies permission to drill in ALL areas of the US where oil is EASY to access.

The POTENTIAL for increasing domestic supplies is enough to push oil prices down. Actual increases in supply today is not necessary. Meanwhile, it's better to pay Americans working in America to find, drill, pump, refine and sell oil than it is to send the money to other countries for the same products.

Food is costly because we have farm price supports that divert most of our corn crop to ethanol production rather than to feeding livestock.

Why is this done when we can buy all the ethanol we need from Brazil? It's madness. But this is what happens when elected officials are sent to Washington to bring home the bacon.

Does President Obama really want us to “make him do it,” to organize and agitate and create the conditions that will let him end the wars, cut the military budget, create jobs and address the hyper-incarceration of black and brown youth? Or is the “make me do it” president an urban legend who lives only inside our heads? A recent presidential encounter with Harry Belafonte tells more than some of us may want to know.

Belafonte was asked by host Amy Goodman whether he'd used his occasional access to directly share his many critical and valuable public policy insights with the White House. Belafonte replied that his only access to the president has been for a few seconds at a time, not long enough for any substantive discussion. But, he said, at one such event President Obama approached him to inquire when Belafonte and Cornel West were going “to cut me some slack.”

“What makes you think we haven't?” Belafonte replied to the president? At this point the brief encounter was over.

Let's pause to think about that. When President Obama cusses out Cornel West and personally demands that historic stalwarts of the movement for peace and justice “cut him some slack” on black unemployment, on foreclosures and the prison state, on torture and the military budget, on unjust wars and corporate welfare, on fulfilling the just demands of those who elected him, our first black president is revealing his real self. Far from saying “make me do it,” President Obama is saying how dare you pressure me to do what you elected me to do.

Harry Belafonte has done a great public service in helping us distinguish the imaginary Barack Obama of “make me do it” from the real Barack Obama, who demands our support, but expects us to “cut him some slack.” Rather than agitating and organizing in our communities to “make him do it” all the real President Obama wants of movement activists is for us to sit down and shut up, until it's time to help chase everybody out to vote for him in 2012.

ever notice any gay/rich/latino person penning the blind adoration and repulsive excuses that u do for hobama?

even though hobama DOES have agendas for ALL of them???

why should blacks be the only americans who do NOT have an agenda via hobama????

    why just us????????
    shame!!!!!!!

For the first time in generations, a presidential election campaign saw virtually no demands from the Black side of the electorate. Two years into Barack Obama’s term, a code of silence remains in force. “Are we so wrapped up in the symbolism of a black president that we can’t hold him accountable to the demands of a community that voted for him upwards of 97%?” And why this peculiar behavior by Black people? “Other communities don’t give up their right to make demands on political leaders they vote for.”

Since when does making demands on a politician make you the sell-out? Are we so wrapped up in the symbolism of a black president that we can’t hold him accountable to the demands of a community that voted for him upwards of 97%? Did the black community give up its rights to make demands because the president is black? That seems to be the argument that is being articulated by black mainstream pundits. It’s the familiar Democratic refrain that usually comes from white Democrats: don’t speak up too much because it will scare white folks. So instead we should remain silent, even as white folks are already scared that they are “losing their country” to the Muslim socialist from Kenya. But if the vast majority of the voting black community pulled the lever for him, then they should expect something back besides some speeches and chastisement on failing to be good parents.

Other communities don’t give up their right to make demands on political leaders they vote for. Latino communities have made demands on immigration reform; the gay community has made demands on changing “don’t ask don’t tell”; Wall Street and the ruling class make demands – well, they really control the joint so that may not be accurate – and Jewish communities make demands for Israel (formerly the homeland to a few million Palestinians). Obama himself speaks eloquently on equal rights for women. Without any prodding, he uses his daughters as examples of why it’s important to create an equal playing ground in education and career opportunities. His first act was to sign into law equal pay rights for women (which is of course needed). This is not to suggest that some demands that are made don’t affect members of the black community, it is to point out that the demands are not led by black groups and leaders professing them to be part of a black agenda. No one says that any of the above groups have no right to make demands. People are skeptical that some of these demands will actually be met, but no one suggests that the communities or constituencies is “hatin” because the demands were made.

Larry Summers, I think, he had a long history of arrogance and relative ignorance about poor people's culture and working people's culture and so forth," West told Goodman. Their dispute began shortly after Summers was appointed President of Harvard, and ultimately led West to leave Harvard and join the faculty of Princeton. According to West, Summers accused him of canceling classes and called his interest in hip-hop an "embarrassment," among other slights.

West added that he was surprised when Obama selected Summers for his council of economic advisers:

I said, here's somebody who has no history whatsoever of sensitivity to poor people or working people, who had been supporting deregulation for a long time as a Clintonite, in the Clinton administration. What is going on here? Or has Obama already become so comfortable with the establishment that you had to have an economist who was legitimate to the establishment in order for him to get his regime off the ground? OK. I mean, if that's the kind of argument you have, then put it forward. But don't tell me you're a progressive, then, and generate that kind of support or major advisers speaking to you--speaking to you every day. Now, if he had Paul Krugman or Joseph Stiglitz or Sylvia Ann Hewitt, I'd say, "Hey, you got something going here. I think we've got a chance for some progressive policy that actually focuses on poor and working people."

But I do forgive Larry Summers for this reason: that I think we all ought to have joy in life, and you can only have joy when you overcome arrogance and open to your own ignorance, because you end up being smart and brainy, but suffering from spiritual malnutrition, emptiness of soul, you see.

And so more and more black folk tend to be well-adjusted to Obama's presidency, but does that mean they're well-adjusted to injustice? Because we don't hear our president talking about the new Jim Crow, the prison-industrial complex.

We don't hear our president talking about the need for high-quality jobs for everybody, giving it priority, not just giving a speech in Detroit. That's fine, but speaking to Tim Geithner, speaking to Larry Summers. When are you going to make jobs, jobs, jobs a priority rather than Wall Street, Wall Street, Wall Street a priority? That's what I'm concerned about.

I know my dear brother, President Obama, has a bust of Martin King right there in the Oval Office, but the question is are is he going to be true to who that Martin Luther King, Jr., actually is? King was concerned about what? The poor. He was concerned about working people. He was concerned about quality jobs. He was concerned about quality housing. He was concerned about precious babies in Vietnam, the way we ought to be concerned about precious babies in Afghanistan and precious babies in Tel Aviv and precious babies in Gaza.

Martin King was fundamentally committed to the least of these. Of course, he was a Christian soldier for justice from the 25th chapter of Matthew.

    shame!!!

Obama had returned to Chicago and practiced civil rights law for 3 years, when he spied an opportunity to run for the state senate. A longtime, widely-revered matron of the civil rights movement named Alice Palmer had held the seat for a number of years, but she announced that she wanted to run for Congress. So, Obama seized the opportunity and proclaimed his intention to run for Alice's open seat.

Well, Alice lost the congressional race and decided that she wanted to hang onto that hard-won state senate seat. Most of the community leaders tried to persuade Obama to withdraw and wait his turn; he was a newcomer after all.

Instead Obama performed his first real act of political jujitsu. He sent his aides to the courthouse to carefully examine all of Alice Palmer's signatures to see if enough could be disallowed to knock her off the ballot altogether. And indeed, some of Alice's signatures were fake. The aides also found enough other fake signatures on opponents' ballot initiatives to knock them off the ballot as well.

By the time Barack Obama walked handily into his state senate seat, everyone there knew him as "the man who knocked off Alice Palmer." Quite a feat indeed for the newcomer, the young whippersnapper with the odd name.

Rev. Al Sharpton and President Barack Obama have a thing going on - and I predict it will turn out badly for both of them.

Sharpton has assumed the role of Obama's political muscle among what passes for Black leadership. His job is to bully into submission those Blacks that dare to even suggest that African Americans need to agitate for their own interests, to speak Truth to Power, even when that Power is represented by a Black man in the White House. In his capacity as the president's junkyard dog, Sharpton verbally savages even the mildest critics of an administration that has greatly expanded U.S. wars while overseeing the biggest transfer in history of public wealth to private pockets. Sharpton bit into Tavis Smiley when the talk-show entrepreneur proposed that Black America formulate its own political agenda, separate from Obama's policies, which have seen Black unemployment, evictions and foreclosures reach Depression-era levels. Sharpton snarled that folks like Smiley were trying to hold Obama to a "double-standard," demanding more from a Black president than they would from a white Democrat - which is absolute nonsense, since so-called Black leadership has made virtually no demands on Obama since he announced his candidacy three years ago.

Which brings us to the very serious down-side to Sharpton's emergence as a the newly-crowned principal Black defender of White House Power. Rev. Sharpton, who has often stated that his two main mentors in life were soul singer James Brown and boxing Mafioso Don King, has up to now enjoyed a symbiotic relationship with the national corporate media. To put it bluntly, they love him, and have needed him, as their flashy caricature of a Black leader. Sharpton's sleazy dealings are legendary in Black activist circles, but he has only once been deeply scrutinized by the media. That was in 2004, when the New York Village Voice revealed that Sharpton's presidential campaign was largely financed by Republican dirty-trickster Roger Stone. Now that Sharpton has truly hit the big time, the media spotlights will surely burn him to a crisp. Al Sharpton's financial dealings cannot stand serious scrutiny. His service to Power is going to cost him dearly - and President Obama will find himself covered with the slime, as well. Mark my words.

The moral degradation of the Black misleadership class reveals itself in the celebration of Osama bin Laden’s demise. Reverends Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, eager to curry favor with the First Black President, wind up endorsing his and George Bush’s War on Terror. “Does Rev. Jackson think Obama deserves a ‘huge psychological boost’ for having killed almost one thousand innocent civilian men, women and children in Pakistan last year with his drones.”

As always, great comments and counterpoint. But to retort, I would again go back to the old Chris Rock joke:

"First we had Malcolm, Martin and Medgar - now we have a bunch of substitute teachers."

Whether or not Obama is a petite bourgeoisie hand of the corporate plutocrats is irrelevant - because, as others pointed, so was the last guy (except really incompetent) and the guy before him (the prototype for corporatist DLC pandering).

My point, going back as far as the mid 70's, for a myriad of reason, Black progressive thought and action crumbled on top of itself steadily, as self-important political hacks jockeyed for power and position, well-heeled Black middle class fled to the 'burbs and Black intellectuals like West and Dyson became the 'militant du jour' of the academy - spouting antiquate slogans while chumming with the same corporatist thinkers they rally against.

And with all that decay in leadership - one milquetoast moderate mulatto is supposed to play Moses and part the Potomac?

That's always been and will continue to be my point until angry faux militants and disillusioned Black folks get it through their self-important, but utterly impotent heads.

The problems isn't Obama - we had problems and issues long before he came on the scene in 2004. And really, its never been about Bush - we all knew he was a stupid spoiled rich kid who couldn't give a damn about Black person not on his staff. And we knew it with Clinton - Arkansas politicos came up with the name 'Slick Willy' after all. And in all honest, it wasn't the GOP's Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader, Ronald Reagan & Pappy Bush, for all the many ways they screwed over black and brown people.

THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE US. Even when we have political power and a means to control our own destiny - Black leaders often fine a way to screw it up and screw over their own community. Hate to go all Alan Keyes, but we shouldn't be bitching about 'the powers that be' until we fix our own backyards.

Sorry for the rant - I need to deflate before I start working.

    - LAC

Nice post but I do differ on one point.

We romantacize about Malcolm, Martin and Medgar because they were martyrs.

Were they alive today I think they would be very much apart of the black political establishment or punditry.

Times and conditions are alot different today than 1965.

Ex Panthers are in Congress or writing BBQ cookbooks.

Andrew Young and John Lewis have both held political office.

I hate to be a cynic but I'm certain that if Malcolm X were alive today he would be very similar to Jesse Jackson. Running his "non profit" organization dependent on corporate donations and speaking fees.

Wearing tailored suits and riding around in chaufferred limos.

King probably would have been Carter's first Ambassador to the UN instead of Young.

And they probably would have been a little jealous and resentful of Obama.

I normally agree with Field but today is not that day. No I will not let Obama get off with those BS Healthcare and Stimulus packages! He allowed Republicans to take over both of those messages in the media. He NEVER gave it the lip service it needed and at the end of the day DEMS controlled the HOUSE AND SENATE. When those votes came up he coulda shoved both of those things, according to his plan, down the Republicans throats! All it needed was better messaging from him to get voters on board so Dems that represent conservative districts would be able to vote for it. So NO I will not be happy with his half ass HC package or the half ass Stimulus. Also, Obama has done NOTHING to reform the major problem with the banks bundling mortgages and trading them like commodoties and devistating the housing market, nor has he come up with any solutions to help those people losing their homes. Also, Obama didn't make sure a Transportation Bill was passed in the 111th Congress when he could have gotten all the money he wanted. He was too busy focused on his terrible HC plan that eventually got SO watered down it does pretty much nothing. The cost of HC will never go down if you allow pharmaceuticals and insurance companies to make up their own prices with zero regulation. Anyway, back to the Transportation Bill. Do you know how many jobs would have been produced from those long term transportation projects?! Obama is a frickin joke and I'm angry. No I didn't expect him to wave a wand and magically change everything but I did expect him to not half ass what projects he decided to focus on. GO HARD OR GO HOME! Obama has fooled everyone into thinking he's progressive, left of center and all that. BULLSHIT! I am 23 years old and Obama was the 1st President I was legally able to vote for. I feel bamboozled. I'm angry and my feelings are hurt. I will not be voting for him next election. PERIOD! Furthermore I totally agree with Mr. West remarks UNTIL he starts talkin about Obama having a fear of free black men... At that point I stopped listening.

Barack Obama appointed eleven members of the Trilateral Commission to top-level and key positions in his administration within his first ten days in office. This represents a very narrow source of international leadership inside the Obama administration, with a core agenda that is not necessarily in support of working people in the United States.

Obama was groomed for the presidency by key members of the Trilateral Commission. Most notably, Zbigniew Brzezinski, co-founder of the Trilateral Commission with David Rockefeller in 1973, has been Obama’s principal foreign policy advisor.

According to official Trilateral Commission membership lists, there are only eighty-seven members from the United States (the other 337 members are from other countries). Thus, within two weeks of his inauguration, Obama’s appointments encompassed more than 12 percent of Commission’s entire US membership

Like everyone in the legal academy over the last decade, we have watched with admiration the amazing changes that Elena Kagan brought to Harvard Law School. A fractured faculty, divided among ideological lines, seemed finally content, if not united. A boisterous student body was finally pacified. The logjam that had stopped faculty hiring had burst. Indeed, she hired so many new faculty the Harvard Law School’s newspaper’s 2008 April Fool’s issue declared, “Dean Kagan Hires Every Law Professor in the Country.”

The first woman Dean of Harvard Law School had presided over an unprecedented expansion of the faculty — growing it by almost a half. She had hired 32 tenured and tenure-track academic faculty members (non-clinical, non-practice). But when we sat down to review the actual record, we were frankly shocked. Not only were there shockingly few people of color, there were very few women. Where were the people of color? Where were the women? Of these 32 tenured and tenure-track academic hires, only one was a minority. Of these 32, only seven were women. All this in the 21st Century.

Well, the insurance companies—get this—don't like the Democrats' bill! That alone should be reason enough to vote for it.

Now, you would think these thieves would love this bill—but they are actually fighting it. Why? Because it doesn't give them ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of what they want. It only gives them... 90%! YOU SEE, pure greed demands all or nothing.

The insurance industry hates this bill because it puts a few minor restrictions on them. Six months after its passage they won't be able to deny children coverage if they have a pre-existing condition. How awful! Government interference! SOCIALISM!

But, hey, they'll still be able to deny these children's parents coverage until 2014! So if a parent gets sick and dies in the next four years, I'm sure someone will step in and raise these already-insured orphans.

And how big will the fines be if the insurance companies do deny someone coverage for having a pre-existing condition? Are you sitting down? A hundred dollars a day! That's it! So if you're the insurance company, and Judy is a customer of yours, and Judy needs an operation that will cost $100,000, what do you do? You take the fine! Let's say Judy lives another year after you've sentenced her to death, your $100-a-day fine will only cost you $36,500! That's a savings of $63,500! And trust me, my friends, that's EXACTLY what's going to happen.

The UnitedHealth Group, one of the largest commercial insurers, told analysts that so far this year, insured hospital stays actually decreased in some instances. In reporting its earnings last week, Cigna, another insurer, talked about the “low level” of medical use.

Yet the companies continue to press for higher premiums, even though their reserve coffers are flush with profits and shareholders have been rewarded with new dividends. Many defend proposed double-digit increases in the rates they charge, citing a need for protection against any sudden uptick in demand once people have more money to spend on their health, as well as the rising price of care.

For decades, the Cons and wingnuts have been selling the trope of Ivory Tower professors who repeat dogma...that is contraindicated by the Real World. Oh, that is because wingnut/Con fauxtellectuals do just that. In the rest of humanity, academics are far more pragmatic and realistic. Because few are on wingnut Welfare. They have to pass peer review.

Here is a little insight about the Cornell thing, it is very simple.
Tavis and Cornel are very, very, very tight.
Tavis has been and will always be a Clinton person. Her victory would have put him in a greater position to be the voice of Black America and access to the White house. Obama destroyed that for him and others. Even before Obama took office, the attack on the “authenticity” of his blackness was already being expressed by these two off the record.

see what a real bm has to say about that blackish betrayer hobama/gwb 3.0/4.0

    CORNEL AND TAVIS ARE HEROES
    HOBAMA IS A HORRID HOAX
If a man is offered a piece of stale bread for dinner, he’s probably not going to want to eat it. If you were to then say, well, “stale bread is better than horse manure,” this won’t make the stale bread taste any better. When given the choice between bad food and horrible food, some people would just rather not eat or try to eat someplace else.

But this is what black America is being fed when they are told that they should passionately support the Democrats simply because the Republicans are going to be worse. The meal is being fed, in part, by elitist liberals like Melissa Harris Perry at Princeton University, a darker-skinned staple in the white liberal establishment and fully-indoctrinated member in the Barack Obama fan club. In a recent article where Perry works diligently to dismiss the political and scholarly relevance of Dr. Cornel West (a huge mistake on her part, since West earned his stripes when Perry was still in high school), she reproduces the same rhetoric that Ivy Leaguers utilize to somehow convince rank-and-file black folks to start seeing things that simply don’t exist. The same political magic trick was used when the administration got a tiny militia of black Harvard Law Professors to campaign on behalf of Elana Kagan for the Supreme Court in spite of her undeniably racist hiring record – this is how Harvard and Yale folks take care of one another. Notice that our entire Supreme Court is full of Ivy League graduates; the elite protect their power by manipulating the minds of poor and working class Americans.

I don’t care if the responsibility for Washington’s political apathy falls on Valerie Jarrett, Barack Obama, the CBC or the pet chicken in the front yard. All I know is that I just talked the daughter of a formerly incarcerated man who told me that none of his five children graduated from high school because their father was not there to guide them. I am not sure why any black person on the planet would have any incentive whatsoever to vehemently support an administration with a black male attorney general who has not lifted a finger to reform a justice system that is undeniably racist.

  154. see the FIRST clairvoyant debra d on that racist elitist bloody warmongering corp drone hobama too:

Now that a black man is president, and could not have been made so without the efforts of millions of whites, the temptation for them to run out of patience with blacks' continued complaints will be tremendous. Simultaneously, millions of blacks woke up on November 5 with yet another buppie made better off on their backs while they remain jobless in dangerous neighborhoods, their immediate futures no brighter for knowing that cornbread may start appearing at the White House Thanksgiving table. When we all stop weepily singing "We Are the World" and emailing each other about what Great-Aunt Bessie would say now if she weren't dead, we'll find that race is still a festering wound. A wound believed to be self-inflicted on one side, daily resalted on the other. It was distressing to hear John McCain, in his otherwise gracious concession speech, invoke "the special significance [Obama's win] has for African Americans and for the special pride that must be theirs tonight." The pride is America's, not blacks' for finally winning one for their side. Our new president must constantly require us to work for "country first"—not for our individual factions

As per mold's instructions, I googled. Here's what I got:

The Duggar Family America's Creepist Family?

    The Duggars

One word, "yeech". Has anyone seen this show? They are so icky. Always smiling and patient, with 19 kids yet. Apparently, they are supporting themselves and their children and are not on the public dole.

Their children are well-mannered and behaved and I have never seen Mr. or Mrs. Duggar ruffled, harried, unpleasant, and scowling; or smacking or yelling at their kids - in other words they are just not normal like the rest of us parents who are on occasion harried and unpleasant. Who scowl, yell, and been known to smack one of our kids when they had it coming.

I keep waiting for one of them to snap and just reach around and slap one of those kids, or scream, or yell or something - anything that will let me think they are normal and will not snap at any moment and go on a rampage and burn down the countryside.

  166. unclestevie, my my. It was Harvard that fired Cornel West. I don't know why I thought it was Princeton.

Either way, he fired for good reason:

Lawrence Summers, president of Harvard gave West the news. In a private meeting with West, Summers allegedly rebuked West for missing too many classes, contributing to grade inflation, neglecting serious scholarship, and spending too much time on his economically profitable projects.

The meeting occurred about a decade ago, and after getting dumped by Harvard, West resumed his show at Princeton.

Outside of a few people who read, no one in white America knows West. Of those who know something of his work, none cares.

He's a non-factor in Obama's existence. But Obama seems interested in getting re-election help from Al Sharpton.

If there were a sympton for racial blindness, this would be it.

  170. So! Obama is fearful of a free black man, eh? He’s a black mascot for Wall Street, too. Ouch!

I knew West had crossed over to narcissist and eccentric celebrity when he began wearing the turtleneck- with a dress shirt and tie. Another indicator was when his well managed hair morphed into buckwheat styled fro. But, during Black History Month, he appeared on the Craig Ferguson Show. To say the least, it was disturbing. He ranted unceasingly. Some may call it crazy. When returning from a commercial break, West was sitting in his seat-legs spread far apart-grinding to the music. It was just strange.

His critique of Obama was not ideological, as one blogger put it, it was personal. In my opinion, it was behavior unbefitting of a college professor. As a matter of fact, it was downright trashy. But most of all, it was spiteful and false. Apparently, one of West complaints involved not receiving an invite to the Inauguration. When he found out that a lowly, hotel baggage carrier had a ticket, he was not amused. This is perplexing, Dr. West. Since you are so concerned about the plight of the working class, aren’t you happy for the baggage carrier? Your hypocrisy is revealing again- as you speak of who’s more comfortable around whom. You are always prosing on about what is just for black people, yet use your professorial skills at Ivy League Schools, not Historically Black ones.

Obviously, an intelligent man with an ego will say and do, stupid things. West has an enormous ego. So much so-that he stripped himself of his so called free black man status, and acted like a slave. He galloped off to the Jim Crow Media and squealed like a hyena. Not only did he go to the MSM in America-he appeared on Russia Today. Whether he knew Putin was not a fan of Obama- or not- why he chose this venue is troubling. Russia Today is a satellite of the state owned Russian News Agency, RIA-Novosti. Novosti is part of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation. Basically, it’s a new name for the KGB.

In conclusion, West recent book is called “Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud.” It’s described as a memoir. Instead of writing it himself, he chose a ghostwriter. Certainly, he hired an African American writer? Of course not! His collaborator is carpet-bagger, David Ritz. Ritz has made a lot of money writing about black entertainers. Marvin Gaye and Grandmaster Flash are two of his subjects. Apparently, the book about West is written as though he is great performer. He did appear in the Matrix and some other movies. Perhaps he should stop hanging out with rap artists and movie stars. The book probably sucks. At the moment-so does he!

In the months after Barack Obama won the presidency with near-total support of Blacks and the white Left, a New York Black activist was fond of telling audiences to pay attention to the First Black President's face, not necessarily his actions. According to this theory, the president had to pretend he was in synch with the corporations and conservative whites, but he's really a good "brother" with Black folks interests at heart. Just look for "the wink." That presidential wink at Black folks was supposed to be the signal that Obama is working his game to our benefit.

Obama has been doing lots of winking as president, but all his signals are designed to please the other side. He almost injured his eyeballs winking at Republicans when he stacked his administration with Bush holdovers and Wall Streeters. He winked till his eyelashes nearly fell out at the insurance and drug companies as he arranged for their continued dominance and super-profits in health care. Obama winked his way into a much larger war in Afghanistan and beyond. He's got that wink, alright, but it's always in the wrong direction.

It takes a lot of winking to run a Center-Right Democratic government, so Obama has underlings to do some of his winks for him. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs's right eye was twitching ferociously as he excoriated "the professional Left" - whatever that is - for making "crazy" demands for such things as "Canadian healthcare." The attack was, of course, a huge wink to the Right, reassuring the corporate world that Obama will not yield an inch to the Left in this election season. He is winking at "the markets" - a euphemism for the super-rich - that they can rest easy.

You ought to to try a little schooling yourself.

But keep it simple, don't be thinking about med school or anything like that.

You will never be a doctor.

  198. even that nelly yalie lack is acting like melissa in drag as shim slurs cornel...

it was a bm harvard grad who helped hobama slay his mentor alice palmer in chi too

    dr. boyce never lied!!!

What "facts" are you searching for?

Or are you just braying at moon as usual?

I'll play. You posted quite a bit on cornel, personal attacks yada yada yada yada, not one fact. List one thing he said about Obama that was incorrect, just one and why. During this intellectual exercise your racist wheelchair is broken. You can't use race as a cop-out theoretical excuse, Just Obamas performane as president and Cornels take on it.

Let see how you do sweetums....i predict you will fail tremendously and further predict even telling you this wont help you try harder, you will copy and paste an article you don't understand and post it as it proof of personal idealogy. How do I know, you did this many times before and you are predictable within your capabilities.
