His-Story.

I happen to love Malcolm X. I loved his honesty and the way he called bull sh** when he saw it, no matter who he offended. I also loved the fact that he was not afraid to grow and evolve as a human being.

He was a brilliant orator and observer of the human condition, and his words --and much of his teachings-- are still relevant today. His House Negro Field Negro speech is the inspiration for this blog. And no matter how you feel about him as a person, you have to admit that his life was an integral and constitutive part of American history.

So why am I writing this? Well apparently not everyone shares my point of view about Brother Malcolm.

"Queens parents are using any means necessary to stop their children’s teachers from besmirching Malcolm X’s name.

Teachers at Public School 201 in Flushing told fourth-graders last week that the controversial activist was “violent” and “bad.” They also refused to let the kids write about the assassinated icon for Black History Month.

Parent Cleatress Brown, 47, of Flushing complained to Principal Rebecca Lozada on Friday after a teacher forbade her fourth-grade son from writing a report on Malcolm X.

“I’m outraged,” said Brown. “As a teacher, you’re imposing your opinion on a bunch of kids.” [Source]

I am so glad that these parents want their children to learn all of America's history, and not just what certain folks feel that they should learn.

There was a time when this would not even have made the news. The poor parents of that school in Queens would have just accepted the teacher's edict and kept it moving. Not anymore.

“It was disrespectful to our history,” said Minor, 33, whose son is not in Brown’s class.

She had her son write about him anyway — and then turn the paper in to her. “That’s called learning,” she said.

Children were asked to pick from several prominent black leaders, including Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Malcolm X for the project, Minor said.
“I felt like when he grew up, he wanted to stop segregation so everyone could be equal,” said her son Tyrese Minor, 9."

Yes Tyrese, towards the end of his life he did want to stop "segregation" and want us to "be equal". But unfortunately, even today, not everyone sees it that way.

  2. I got that from a guy in college who lived next door. "Malcolm X was all about hate and violence" he told my roommate and I. My roommate piped in "have you ever read any of his speeches or read his autobiography"? Of course we know the answer. Too many preconceived notions and not enough actual experience.

    Anony 5:54,

Malcolm X was a self-educated through reading and a dictionary. He understood that knowledge was power. Malcolm was courageous, strong, and bold black man who pointed out some truths that those in power did not want to hear. He was straightforward and did not sugar coat or mince words in what he had to say. Malcolm stood up to those whose intent was to commit violence against black people, faced them head on, and did not flinch.

Btw, he was not violent, but he did not believe in being someone's punching bag either. My sentiments exactly. If you pass a lick, you should be able to accept one back. If you keep your hands to yourself, I'll keep mine to myself. I'm not your child, I am an adult just like you.

Those parents should have immediately contacted the NAACP or any civil rights attorney and have them send a letter to that school. See how fast they backed off on that!

Though the damage is done already! Because those children now understand that people in authority would denigrate and suppress a Black leader.

This is really crazy! Who makes up these rules at the schools? So it was okay at one school and not at the next???

Is anybody home? Is anybody in charge? :)))

Open Letter to Brother Malcolm X

Brother Malcom, no matter how much some people attempt to wipe your images and legacy from the pages of history, it will never happen. You are inimitable, you spoke the truth when others not only turned their back, they hid in the closet. There are those who know that this hell hole of a country is currently at a historical crossroad. A junction of crossroads leading towards either justice through collective consciousness or injustice, the path towards further tyranny and oligarchy.

I miss you dearly Brother Malcolm because we don't have any one on the horizon thst comes close to speaking truth to power like you did. Therefore, let clowns be clowns because that's what they are good at doing. They will never be able to obliterate you as a man of truth and compassion like they attempted to do with the Egyptian Sphinx's nose, a signifier of African stock.

    Rest in peace Malcolm X

But now, in BRA, black parents can dictate what is taught in school.

    Must be nice.

The parents of that poor little 6 year old white girl whose teacher scolded her for saying the word 'Jesus' and made her cry have no such power.

    Colonel Corn,
Dictating and taking an interest in your child's education and what they learn in school are two entirely different things. That mother was well within her rights and responsibility as a parent.

If that mother of the six year old did not go up to the school and voice her dissatisfaction then she failed as a parent to take care of her responsibility. However, I bet she did go up to the school. The teacher probably was fired.

  14. GrannyStandingforTruth8:34 PM

Just because the teacher didn't like MalcolmX, she had no business telling that child that in the first place. She totally out of line.

Does she tell the children that Columbus was a brutal murderer of pregnant women and how he ripped opened their stomachs?

I liked MLK too, but what I didn't like was him encouraging folks to let others beat them so bad, until they needed a plate in their head or crippled them for life.

Where would the African American community be today had Brother Malcolm lived? That is a interesting question. I think as a whole we would be better off. Now we mirror the larger society as far as the haves and have nots. Malcolm spoke about doing business with each other and circulating the money in the community several times before it leaves. If we had adopted that practice, there would be no issues In our community as far as unemployment is concerned. However we have lost our way as far as that's concerned.

Well, brutha Field and sista Granny may be honoring MalcolmX, but I remember the 60's when he WAS considered bad and violent. I remember when most of the Muslim organization was considered mostly bm criminals out of prison who would kill you if they had to.

The fact that they killed MalcolmX proved that they were killers. As a matter of fact, Farrakhan was suspected to be involved.

So you can toast Malcolm X all you want, the teacher had a point and NO child should be worshiping him or the Black Panthers. They killed too. In fact the FBI had to keep them under surveillance but not very long because they ended up killing each other.

The moral of all black stories: "don't be on the wrong black side".

And don't let people like black democrats, Granny, Desert, and that professional failing student by the name of Dr Queen intimidate you--and call you a 'house negro'. They are very jealous of black conservatives who have the courage to speak up.

The truth is that being a Black Conservative is the "best deal" for us today.

For instance, Blacks in the Oakland/Berkeley/Richmond areas, AND Hayward areas are going 'Conservative' and 'Christian'. They are turning to God more and more and turning away from OOW and killing each other. There are others in other parts of the country where it is happening too. Blacks are recognizing which side their bread is buttered on.

Thanks to Obama's lousy treatment of us, we are beginning to wake up.

Only the black leftist dems are left to kill, rob and have OOW babies.

Refuses to call out Obama and his failed policies.

Refuses to be a clear voice demanding better of our president.

Instead, when the politicians AFAM support with 90% of their vote tells them to sit down, shutup and stop complaining-black folks obey.

Here again, some people only know Brother Malcom X from the movie or the writings of reporters that continued America's agenda of criminalizing or minimizing the Black man's role in his/our fight for freedom

Compare Brother Malcom's actions to the ongoing "real" violence of America at the time of Brother X's influence.

During the civil rights era many Black men "used" white women to obtain drugs- they were able to come up with the cash needed for that moment. After his eyes were open to the cause- these things were placed aside. As a Brother I never saw or heard of his need for the white women in a sexual manner. As a side not, you have to have been there to understand many Black men relations with the white women. She WAS the forbidden fruit for many of us. We did not have the options of freely being with her unless there were motives. ALL my peers had to "knock off" the forbidden fruit. Maybe Brother Little did the same. As a Black Panther. I could not fathom sleeping with someone that most likely could not/ would not understand the struggle. That just me.

Back to the violence. Brother Malcom lived thur the most civil violence. The world wars, Vietnam (I was there 69-70), Jim Crow and hangings, beating, burning(the Blacks were burned prior to the lynching) good ole ass whoppings. AMERICA WAS AND IS VIOLENT. Stop ascribing things out of context. Even tonight as I type this whatever violent America is bombing someone on this globe. I am 62 and I can't recall any length of time when we (America) were not at war or going to war.

Some of us was just tired of marching and praying as Brother Martin espoused. Both men's journey was necessary for the cause. Too bad this thing called integration has not fulfilled both men's dreams. We as a people just got to do better.

One last thing, it is time for America to really take care of her spent warriors. The VA is past it's ability to take care of the need.

Until we as a people write and manage our own history our warriors will always be marginalized.

comes with being the beautifully flawed human beings that we are. flaws and all- brotha Malcolm was a great man among men. there's no taking that away from him.

if i were a gay rights activist...i wouldn't pick on BW all mad like we are competition.

i would be getting at those folk that make comments using gayness as this thing to hate + loathe. like thinking/knowing a person has gay behavior is reason to disdain them.

seems to me, THAT is the type of behavior that makes life unsafe for gay folk.

attempting to silence is not Good. but definitely imparting some much needed additional info can only be of benefit;)

Take a look at the commrntd here. All of the comments by black bloggers are of substance, meaningful, succinct and posted without malice.

Meanwhile, the comments by white folks are mean spirited, without forethought, whimsical and absent honesty.

Sigh, just another day in the life of absent minded white trolls saying ignorant shit on a black blog.

  61. But just imagine for a moment how empty and meaningless there lives are.

They come here to hurl hatred, because they have nothing else to do with their sad little lives. The only thing that makes Bill-O feel like a man is to spend his spare time abusing people.

I wonder if Bill-Oh and Kinky as twelve year olds could see themselves as they are now, how would they feel? Is this really the life they had planned for themselves?

"When I grow up I want to spend all my time basing black people, because that's a happy and fulfilling way to spend a life."

It is sad for Kinky and Bill, we should genuinely feel pity for them. As I have said before I'm sure they are humiliated in some way in their daily lives. Perhaps by women who ignore them, or maybe they are bullied at work. Something makes them feel less than a complete man, which forces them here to abuse black folks day-after-day-after day in an attempt to re-assert their manhood.

It's interesting but also deeply sad to see them wasting their lives here.

  66. Pilots often head to wrong airports, reports show
On at least 150 flights, including one involving a Southwest Airlines jet last month in Missouri and a jumbo cargo plane last fall in Kansas, U.S. commercial air carriers have either landed at the wrong airport or started to land and realized their mistake in time, according to a search by The Associated Press of government safety databases and media reports

    http://news.yahoo.com/pilots-often-head-wrong-airports-reports-show-092049243.html

Maybe it's time for the government to get involved in why pilots screw up.

No doubt the Pilots union just like the teachers union protects those pilots that can't find the correct runway.

No, most DO NOT move when they are unhappy where they live. Most people deal with it and see it for what it is. You seem to be irritated at people who say anything that is "true" about Oakland. Well, I WILL talk about the truth. Hell, the whole nation has an opinion Oakland and it ain't nice and pretty.

FYI: I am in Oakland because I am trapped for the same reason so many of our folks are. We are stuck in poverty and can't move. Obviously you don't know much about the condition of a lot of black folks stuck in the hood. Nor do you relate to them.

You just ask the question like most Whites do: "If you are so miserable, why don't you move?"

Again, I can't move...at least not yet. But I will NOT be 'silent' about the horrible conditions, the degrading racist conditions, the powerlessness of Blacks and the DENIAL of all that suppressed shit by black folks like you.

No Granny, I won't be moving anytime soon and damn sure won't be quiet about this place where YOU live in obvious happiness.

No one said they hated Oakland. You did. However, Oakland does rank in the top 3 cities for black-on-black crime.

But YOU moved to Oakland and apparently very happy there. One can assume that wherever you were before must have been beyond hell. I mean, you have already lost a cousin to a murdering group of gangsters that ran a 'bakery' down in ONE of the dangerous parts of Oakland. And you are not miserable there yet.

I didn't get the impression that the person who suggested earlier that Malcolm X was gay was actually gay himself. I assume he read a biography (I cannot recall the title of the book) that came out a few years ago that suggested that Malcolm X was a maybe "hustler" as in "gay for pay".

After all, Malcolm X was an ex-convict. He spent years in prison so it is entirely possible that he had sex while he was incarcerated. Since there are no women in a men's prison... well, you do the math. The book claims that Malcolm X may well have been on what is now called the "down-low".

Let's face it, most of us speculate on the sex lives of iconic (and not so iconic) figures so Malcolm X is fair game for that type of speculation.

And who is picking on BW? On the other hand, I wish that some people would not use the bible to pick on LGBT people.

    @Dr Nuwang,

Yep, I've been watching the trial and smh. Unbelievable! He left the scene, he got together with a friend to make up a story about a shotgun, and they kept up on what was going on by watching the news. She didn't want to be an accessory to murder.

He told her to hurry up and get in the car.

Do not allow HillBillyBill, KinkyConMan and FactChecker of Nothing to derail this blog site's topic every day with elementary conversations. We are supposed to be talking about Malcolm X and his contribution to this country. These people mentioned above are detractors or disruptors of the worst kind. They fear to the utmost of having an honest conversation about brother Malcolm or anything related to the black struggle

MY SUGGESTION IS TO IGNORE THESE IMBECILES AND DO NOT RESPOND TO THEIR CHILDISH POSTS! DON'T GIVE THEM THE PLEASURE OF ATTENTION, THIS IS WHAT THEY SEEK IN THE FIRST INSTANCE!

you must be new, my friend.

there is one that knows full well what i AM talking about. if you have no clue...i was not talking to you. no disrespect.

i agree with the not using Scriptures to pick on gay folk. been saying that for years. a point of agreement;)

by the same token, hateful gays (gasp!...there is such a thing? yep. most definitely.) should not try to act as if folk agreeing with Scripture wrote it. or must keep silent about what is written, in order to escape vicious, designed to silence, defeated, hateful labeling.

everybody got next on the knock it off flow;)

    that's where we are.

lies and hypocrisy do no one any good.

take a peek over at the UK...just look at what all is being revealed. folks in high places having a field day with the children. little boys in greater numbers than folks are willing to discuss. then get familiar with chicken hawk concept. it is well understood het peds stay busy. gay folk won't shut up about THEM.

then know...the united states of satan is not that far behind with the devilry with children. so this no one can speak won't really work. the government is swarming with the 'paths of all orientations.

come on now. no golden calves. idols get ripped down.

folk have got to stand up- decent Black, White, Hispanic, Jewish, Muslim, etc. got to tell the Truth about the real deal.

i keep saying Galatians 3:28-29. what's not clear about that?

as a het woman, i really don't know what to do with the homo/Scriptures thing. i know what's written. i know that i AM called to Love my neighbor. what gay folk work out with the Creator of their understanding or in their heads, if they just worship themselves. whatever folk come up with...is their personal business.

that goes for hets that don't have the homo situation with which to deal...but pretty much hit every other lick when it comes to sin as written in Scriptures. while trying to mad dog gay folk. lol.

from what i can see, it is not about any of that, really. at least not for me.

    you know-

there is not much new i can say over here. it feels like i just repeat myself.

responded because i do not know if you are a sincere soul or not. hope my comment better helps you to see my perspective.

    if not, that's ok, too.

we may agree to disagree. though we are in agreement on at least one key point;)

    ___________________

if you will re-read the comment(s) i finally acknowledged. it is well understood what has been said about Malcolm X's sex life. for hire, pay, give away. whatever. his personal business.

it wouldn't matter to me if he had a new twink an hour. the fact that he would stand up + call it...remains the facts of the matter.

when discussing his accomplishments, why would it be necessary to address again and again? do folk talk about 'ole gay Abe Lincoln? or 'ole gay JFK?

i did not necessarily get the impression devilish soul was homo. i did get the distinct impression that he/she thinks it a negative for Malcolm X to have engaged in homo activity.

can you see how i would think that?

this is what i addressed. + my friend that likes to attack Black women while labeling everybody "homo hater", "homophobic", etc.

yet, behavior that truly makes it more difficult for gay folk gets met with the sound of crickets.

    that's all.

lol. i can't help but to laugh. please take no offense;)

    ok...going to Focus. lol!
