The wrong side of history.

Today is the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and white Americans like Tom Brokaw are still trying to figure out "how far we have come" on matters of race in this country.

Most Americans will tell you that we have come a long way, and that the country is nothing like it was 50 years ago. Most Americans.

I am sure that quite a few Americans wish that it could go back to the way it was. All this civil rights and political correctness talk is making hard for some people to cope. (BTW, it's called political correctness for a reason: because it's the correct thing to do.) The Civil Rights Act changed the laws, but sadly, it did not change the attitudes of many in the majority population, particularly conservatives who want to conserve this particular part of America's history.

Let's not forget that conservatives were against the Civil Rights movement (even though they will try very hard to rewrite history since they were on the wrong side of it) and their leaders at the time, like Barry Goldwater, spoke out strongly against the passing of the Civil Rights Act. They are still trying to twist historical truths today, and every time you see an article written about the republican party and Civil Rights, you will find a   conservative writing about the democratic party of old before white Southerners bolted for the other major political party.

“It so happens that I am in agreement with the [anti-racial segregation] objectives of the Supreme Court as stated in the Brown decision,” writes Goldwater.  “I am not prepared, however, to impose that judgment of mine on the people of Mississippi or South Carolina. . . . That is their business, not mine.  I believe that the problem of race relations, like all social and cultural problems, is best handled by the people directly concerned . . . [and] should not be effected by engines of national power.”

That is a stunning quote from the hero of the conservative movement.  But not surprising.

Ironically, the leaders of that movement are just as backwards on matters of race and civil rights in 2014. And a quote such as that from a current conservative member of congress, or tea party representative, would not even cause us to raise an eyebrow.

Finally, since we are speaking about conservatives, I want to talk about the black conservative sister who had her face painted white on a billboard, recently.

This was not cool. The sister should have a right to declare her political allegiance to whatever party she chooses.

"Glo Smith, an African-American Republican challenger for the House of Representatives, has been subjected to the unfortunate trend in which there are racist attacks on African-American Republicans. The Florida Republican candidate has had her campaign sign vandalized with white paint over her face. The incident occurred last week in her district.

Her district is overwhelmingly comprised of Democratic voters via details of the area’s voter registration. According to the National Review publication on Monday, this vandalistic attack on Smith is the latest in a long line of incredibly racist attacks on African-American Republicans.

Glo Smith and her vandalized campaign posterBeyond the whitewashed campaign sign, Smith – whose full name is Gloreatha Scurry-Smith - has said that many of her campaign signs have also been stolen. Last Tuesday, she was told of the racist defacement of her campaign sign. The costly signage to promote her candidacy for congress stands eight feet tall and four feet wide. The sign that was destroyed was placed in a very visible location for maximum exposure. The sign was on private property along Interstate 10 in Jacksonville, Florida. In the vandalism, it is apparent that the criminal vandalized the campaign property by spray painting white over Smith’s face. The work of the vandal was carefully calculated."

What a shame. I would like to personally contribute to help get a new billboard up as soon as possible for this poor conservative black sister.

If anyone reading this knows the aforementioned Ms. Smith or anyone in her campaign, please have them reach out to me.

I will send them a check in the mail as soon as possible.

  1. How painfully ironic that you bring up the anniversary of the civil rights act...

Its extremely painful and ironic that people Died for the right to vote for a Black President who REFUSES to do anything for Black people.

    Here are the consolation prizes...

    1. One mention about being a "Mutt" because his father was Black , and his Mother was White.

2."I'm Not The President of "Black America"
    (sound byte)

    3. A talk down speech to graduating Seniors at a HBCU

    4. A lowered expectation from politicians. The Best example of this would be what to expect in 2016

Sure cant expect a White Candidate to do anything regarding Black Folks especially when we let Barack go without doing anything in return.....

    Yayyy... Civil Rights Anniversary...

    Quid Pro Quo Field .....
Come on... you know how this works....

Any objection Barry Goldwater had to the Civil Rights Act was based upon an understanding that the Act violated the Constitution.

    On the other hand...

...far more Democrats than Republicans voted against the Civil Rights Act.

And, let us remember that Martin Luther King, Jr was a Republican and Bull Conner was a Democrat.

Is it the YT invented/supported trauma system or have the bangers just lost their gun jones? BTW money says few of the shooters are Republicans. Go figure.

BIB, thank you for facing and telling the truth. You spoke the words I have felt about Obama since he was 'first' elected.

Obama doesn't want to be Black. He has proven that again and again. Yet, there are some Blacks like Field and PX who worship O. Go figure...

I'm sure there is some deep psychological stuff going on that makes someone still love an abuser. I don't know. There seems to be some twerk inside that is so dysfunctional that it keeps us from facing reality, let alone 'honesty' with ourselves.

Anyway, thank you. It's good to know there are a few Blacks out there who aren't delusional.

Well since Barack Obama is a conservative, does this mean he is also on the wrong side of history?

"written about the republican party and Civil Rights, you will find a conservative writing about the democratic party of old before white Southerners bolted for the other major political party."

Speaking re-writing history, most of the segregationists stayed home with the Democrat party, and white southerners didn't start voting Republican in mass till 1984, the year Democrats nominated leftwing wacko Walter Mondale.

Fn loves taking 'conservatives" out of context and feigning outrage.

Exactly. I have a problem with ALL illegal immigrants... white, Latin, Asian, black etc. For a country that is so quick to put up the "terrorist" alerts, and scream "crime" stats... funny how some turn a blind eye to the growing number of illegal/undocumented white Europeans flooding America while still harboring their dangerous criminal and racketeering ways.

And some black people really need to stop with the "they are with us" mentality. When you board a plane, you are told to put your own oxygen mask on before you even attempt to help others with theirs. This should be common sense. But let me stop before Pontius PilotX comes by to regulate what I'm allowed to say or not.

  30. PC is correct, Dr. King was not a Republican. He made it clear he was non-partisan as he believed he could work with either party to help his people. He did however support LBJ in 1964 because he didn't like the direction the gop was heading. Go to the King Research Institute's website and search the term non-partisan and read his own words on the subject.

  42. "Next, we sought historical expertise, including by asking Thomas Jackson, a history professor at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and author of From Civil Rights to Human Rights: Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Struggle for Economic Justice, for his take on the video.

He told us that Alveda King's description of the Republican Party's history was on the mark. "The Party of (Abraham) Lincoln defended black rights most vocally in the 1860s and 1870s, then abandoned the cause when the Democrats and the (Ku Klux) Klan defeated Republican state governments in the South. Blacks started their historic switch to the Democrats during the New Deal," which were economic programs implemented in the 1930s under President Franklin Roosevelt in response to the Great Depression.

But Jackson said that he would not consider King a Republican, calling him instead a " 'tax and spend' democratic socialist."

"He wanted the nation to spend billions of dollars directly to employ the unemployed when the private sector failed, and a vigorous mixture of affirmative action and anti-poverty programs championed by the liberal-left, and targeted federal spending in impoverished areas, especially the nation's slums," Jackson said.

David Garrow — author of Bearing the Cross: Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for biography — advised against assigning King to either party. "It's simply incorrect to call Dr. King a Republican," Garrow told us.

However, he said he wouldn't call King a Democrat, either, because he had "very positive feelings" about Republican Richard Nixon in the late 1950s and "extremely positive feelings" about Republican Nelson Rockefeller, the New York governor who later served as vice president. Also, Garrow said, King became "a very harsh critic" of Democratic President Lyndon Johnson over his escalation of the Vietnam War and "wouldn't necessarily have backed (Democratic presidential nominee) Hubert Humphrey in '68 had he (King) lived."

We asked Garrow about the 2006 Post article's statements that King had voted for Democratic presidential candidates John F. Kennedy in 1960 and Lyndon Johnson in 1964. He said there is little doubt that King did so."

All people of goodwill viewed with alarm and concern the frenzied wedding at the Cow Palace of the KKK with the radical right. The “best man” at this ceremony was a senator whose voting record, philosophy, and program were anathema to all the hard-won achievements of the past decade.
Senator Goldwater had neither the concern nor the comprehension necessary to grapple with this problem of poverty in the fashion that the historical moment dictated. On the urgent issue of civil rights, Senator Goldwater represented a philosophy that was morally indefensible and socially suicidal. While not himself a racist, Mr. Goldwater articulated a philosophy which gave aid and comfort to the racist. His candidacy and philosophy would serve as an umbrella under which extremists of all stripes would stand. In the light of these facts and because of my love for America, I had no alternative but to urge every Negro and white person of goodwill to vote against Mr. Goldwater and to withdraw support from any Republican candidate that did not publicly disassociate himself from Senator Goldwater and his philosophy."

They - white men - used to lynch black folk; usually accompanied by the "live" castration and removal of other body parts before torching and roasting the victims. Today, the white male republican, tea-party descendants of these white male lynchers have effectively "lynched/castrated" our President, Barack Obama. The final immolation should be spectacular.

My first reaction was (a) to speculate that many, if not most, of those Democrats were black, and (b) that the defacement most likely was a complaint that as a Republican she was a House Negro, that she was really serving Whitey and acting White and they were helping her to look the way she acts.

No? Out of the question? Then it's a disconnect in my knowledge and I need to take either Empathy 101 or The Way People Act 1A.

Tell me where I went wrong with that thesis.

  48. Not that my thesis means that the defacement was anything but wrong or that she doesn't desrve a new sign.

No... I dont just support candidates because they are Black...

I dont know what her position is on anything.

I dont roll with ALL Black Conservatives...nor with ALL Black Democrats...

I see the anon idiots are still drooling all over Field's blog.

One claims that the Civil Rights Act "violated" the Constitution.

    Please detail how.

And for the millionth time, MLK Jr. was NOT a Republican.

Even the dumbest rightwinger will not say with a straight face that King supported Nixon and Goldwater over JFK and LBJ so why do you continue with this very provable bullshit?

    No according to google.

But listen to me folks: when you do decide to kick the "O" addiction, just remember, the field is here.

Why now the lapping up of the Obama Flavor-Aid.

So true. But FN Negroes can't see it, or don't want to see it.

At one time, Field DID see the truth. He once said to his fellow Field Negroes:

"But listen to me folks: when you do decide to kick the "O" addiction, just remember, the field is here." (thanks to Bill for reminding me. You have soul).

However, 'something' happened to Field. He lost all rationale and logic and ended up drinking the Obama kool-aid and has been drinking it ever since.

There's something in that kool-aid that blinds a bm to the "fact" that Obama doesn't give a damn about Blacks and never will. But, he will gladly USE Blacks for his own benefit.

Not only is it depressing to be a bm in America, it is unsafe to be Black among Blacks. Very few are"TRUSTWORTHY"....

But as I reflect on trustworthy Blacks FOR Blacks, that is a 'rare' quality among Blacks in America.

  57. I just get so incensed when Field focuses all this energy towards people who AREN'T currently In power and refuses to address the guy black folks voted for... its absolutely appalling that he focuses so intentently on these political NOBODY'S that really shouldn't have a bearing on what the White House does or does not do... My comments will continue to be this way until 2016.

I'm sensing you're preoccupied with other things going on in your busy life right now.

Only to help you, feel free to write the check to cash and sign it. I'll get in touch with Flo and figure out a good amount to fill in for you when I get your check.

Mail it to me at my office, Mr. William F. Raud, Room 332, 207 N Garfield Ave, Pasadena, CA 91101. (You'll see my address matches the IP I post from)

I have to admit, I am surprised you are going to give you own money to help someone. I might have to rethink my repeated calling you a democrat.

Okay, personally, I think that knocking down or defacing campaign billboards is wrong, on account of being juvenile, and undemocratic, and a violation of general rules of decorum. Plus, it's a petty crime.

But is it, in fact, racist to make mean comments about black Republicans? I'm going to go with: No.

The GOP has, increasingly in recent years, made it very clear that they are an anti-black party. (To be more accurate, they're actually an anti-black, anti-Latino, anti-Muslim, anti-gay party. And possibly an anti-female party as well. But who's counting all the groups they hate? It's a long list.)

I really don't think it's bigoted to point out the buffoonishness of joining a political party that hates you for who you are.

Field, I am very disappointed that you didn't mention President Lyndon B Johnson who signed the Civil Rights Bill. Let me make it clear, that bill would have NEVER made it through(even today) if it weren't for him. Blacks owe LBJ a debt of gratitude.

If you read what he had to do to get the necessary votes you would appreciate him. I am always amazed at the lack of historical knowledge that has impacted us positively that our folks know nothing about.

Instead, you put up a picture about Barry Goldwater who had NO impact on the Civil Rights Act...LBJ DID!

I swear. You need to learn about what's important, and what's not.

"The Republican Party geared its appeal and program to racism, reaction, and extremism.
