When racism takes over the environment.

Image result for environmental racism images "What exactly is environmental racism? It’s a policy or practice that differentially affects or disadvantages (intentionally or unintentionally) individuals, groups or communities because of their race and/or class. It has been well-documented around the world that environmental hazards often impact poor communities and communities of color disproportionately. Three out of every five African-Americans living well below the poverty line are also living in areas situated close to toxic waste sites, according to the federal government’s General Accounting Office. Living near these dangerous facilities has significant impacts on all aspects of their lives. Their air, water and food can all be affected; noise pollution and vibrations become a problem; the awful stench permeates everything; schools, workplaces and homes become unsafe places; and a multitude of different health effects can result.

The Tragedy of Chester, Pennsylvania
In the mind of Charles Lee, chairperson of the National Environmental Justice Advisory Committee to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the story of Chester, Pennsylvania, is the worst case of environmental racism he has ever seen. Chester, a predominantly poor and Black community located just southwest of Philadelphia, is home to 42,000 residents and one of the largest collections of waste facilities in the country. One of Chester’s heaviest polluting facilities, the seventh largest garbage-burning incinerator in the nation, is located directly across the street from residential housing in Chester’s west-end. Although all the trash is burned in Chester, over half of the waste burned at the facility, known as the Westinghouse Incinerator, comes from all over the East Coast. In addition, Thermal Pure Systems, which was the largest infectious medical waste treatment facility in the nation when it was in operation, at one point brought in nearly three times as much medical waste as the amount produced in the entire state of Pennsylvania. The plant often left medical waste lying in the grass outside its boundaries, in public spaces where children were free to play.

“Durban Poison” in South Africa
South Durban is the industrial hub of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Province.  It is home to one of the two biggest oil refineries in South Africa. South Durban has the largest concentration of petrochemical industries in the country, and it refines approximately 60 percent of South Africa’s petroleum. Apart from being overwhelmed with petrochemical companies, the South Durban industrial basin is also home to waste water treatment works, numerous toxic waste landfill sites, an airport, a paper manufacturing plant and a multitude of chemical process industries. In total, the South Durban area contains over 120 industries, including the two oil refineries. This petrochemical basin has been dubbed the “Durban poison” because it disproportionately overburdens low-income communities with environmental stress (pollution) and public health costs. Under the apartheid system, these toxic industries were located next to Black communities. The South Durban basin has a population of approximately 285,000 people, overwhelmingly Black communities. The development of South Durban as an industrial hub, starting in the 1930s, involved collaboration between local industrialists and the white government. " {More}

I don't live that far from Chester. I hope the wind from that area isn't blowing my way.

Shout out to my big sister for sending me this article.

Y'all need to read all of it.

    Yup! That's a big,big problem.

Same thing here too. So instead of smelling the tropical breezes you get the stench of tires burning!

Medical waste is also a problem, and years ago they found bags and bags (red biohazard ones) out in an open field under the sun!!!

Too much garbage and not enough facilities for it.

Brother Field, every time you mention "racism" in your post, I shudder because I know Kinky and Bill will be coming after you.

Of course, your bodyguard, Purple Cow tries to defend you but does a poor job of it. He's just not strong enough to handle Kinky or Bill.

Anyway, this post is quite depressing for our folks who have not done anything about racism, let alone "environmental racism".

I really think the answer is education for Blacks and while we are at it, let's split up the country. Those Whites don't give a damn about our lives and would rather see us all dead anyway.

The City of Chicago's definition of "fly dumping":

A less polite definition is when your shitty business doesn't feel like taking its trash to a real dump (cause this costs actual money), so instead you drive it into the ghetto, dump it on some poor bastard's front lawn, and haul ass out of there before the cops can catch you.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Anonymous4:23 PM

Grossly underestimating, or studiously avoiding recognizing it for what it is?

To admit that ISIS represents a genuine manifestation of Islam would mean admitting the great lie of multiculturalism: That all peoples and cultures are interchangeable and compatible.

Some cultures can live together, but the truth is that Islam is incompatible with Western liberalism. An Islamic population cannot co-exist over the long term with rival ideologies or widely variant cultural norms. Either Muslims leave their religion behind or the society must become Muslim.

The Western powers have spent decades propping up the idea that tolerating the intolerant will eventually result in a functioning, cooperative multi-cultural paradise. The have ignored the lessons of history and the growing bloodshed for far too long.

The mass importation of people from a hostile culture inimical to the fundamental values of your society was an insane proposition from the start. To continue this way is to march toward a violent resolution on a historic scale.

Even at this late hour, our leaders cannot even admit the situation.

Again this reminds me of the many observations that were noted during the Ferguson protests. How can communities of color and other disenfranchised safeguard what's in their best interests without becoming more active at the local and state level?

Without a voice during the decision making process, the more engaged citizens declaring "not in my backyard" effectively shutdown any plan that undermined environmental safety.

Hence the reason many of these unscrupulous entities banked on the silence of the less informed/involved to undermine their enviromental security. We should all be outraged!!

  55. When people have to scratch and claw for the basics of life, "environmental racism" is not on their "to know" list. Here in Newport News we had the dubious chore of sending coal to the many foreign ports. The trains used to roll day and night bringing coal from the western part of VA as well as West Virginia into the ports. The coal, while awaiting placement on ships, would have clouds of coal dust in the near vicinity of of the majority of the subsidized housing in NN. Many generations of Blacks in Newport News were affected by the coal dust emitting from these coal yards.
The rate of asthma was triple the nation's rate. Needless to say the infant death rate was also higher than the nation's.

Now with gentrification the "projects" have been demolished for other people with higher income homes. The coal yards are now stringently monitored by EPA and from the interstate you can see for miles and miles. The mounds of coal are constantly "wetted" to eradicate the clouds of coal dust.

With Blacks, it is as if we always find about negative effecting situations too late. And yes, the people that could have helped fled the projects and the unhealthy environment as soon as they got their first paycheck.

I am not refuting that the white had shared misery in WV and elsewhere. Why is every comment challenged by people narrow views. I was not comparing white versus Blacks suffering. The train conductors also inhaled the coal dust as well as workers at both end on the coal to China missions.

Note that the Whites in West Va. Had the options of leaving, just as my family left the projects when JFK allowed Blacks to enter the housing market as whites had done for generations.

Again when I comment on life's experiances I am telling from my point of view. I can not include every iota in my comments. Now you may write about what you saw. In your home in the Appalachians.
