Another death and a "riot" changes how Americans view race relations.

The Field Negro education series continues.

"Acknowledging a problem is often viewed as the first step to recovery. So Americans appear to be on the right path.

A new poll from The New York Times and CBS News found increasing pessimism about race relations in the U.S., among black and white respondents. Some 61 percent of respondents said race relations in America are “generally bad”—up almost 20 percent from a similar poll taken last December. The starkest rise in negative perception of race relations was found among whites.

The poll, conducted last Thursday through Sunday, comes on the heels of the death of Freddie Gray, a black man who mysteriously died after being taken into custody by Baltimore police. Gray’s death triggered days of protests and renewed an often painful national conversation about persistent racism, inequality, and our troubled criminal justice system.

In a Yougov/Huffington Post poll released last week, white respondents said they are increasingly likely to see deaths like Gray’s as part of a larger pattern in the way police treat black men rather than an isolated incident. The results marked a shift from an earlier poll in which participants were asked the same question about Michael Brown’s death in Ferguson, Missouri.

The research suggests that Americans have arrived at a new awakening about the persistent race problem. Just last week, Hillary Clinton, a Democratic presidential candidate, delivered an unusual speech at Columbia University in which she called for reforms to a criminal justice system that disproportionately impacts young black and Latino men. “We have to come to terms with some hard truths about race and justice in America,” she said.

On Monday, President Obama unveiled an extension of My Brother’s Keeper, his initiative to empower young black and Latino men. In his speech announcing the initiative, President Obama reminded the audience about the numbers stacked against communities of color: “In too many places in this country, black boys and black men, Latino boys, Latino men, they experience being treated differently by law enforcement—in stops and in arrests, and in charges and incarcerations.”' [Source]

I am sorry Mr. President, but me just being "my brother's keeper" isn't going to cut it.

These young men of color need opportunities.

How about programs to get them into trade unions that they have been traditionally locked out of?

Those $25 an hour jobs would go a long way towards helping young men take care of their families and build a future for themselves.

How about fundamental changes in the criminal justice system when it comes to labeling juveniles as felons, etc. ?

It's tough to get a job with a felony on your sheet.

How about creating more incentives (student loan forgiveness) to get more teachers of color in our classrooms?

Nothing like a role model in your class room dropping knowledge to set you on the straight and narrow path.

Anyway, this will all be pointless if race relations do not improve in this country.

  1. You know Field, I never thought I would see it in my lifetime, but the narrative about Black men and the police seems to be FINALLY taking a turn toward truth.

But would anyone have "heard" anything if it weren't for the riots?

"But would anyone have "heard" anything if it weren't for the riots?"

What about the riot in Watts in 1965 when they said bm and police were FINALLY taking a turn toward the truth? What about the 1992 Watts riot re: police brutality?

Do you 'really' think anything is going to change THIS TIME? What makes you think so when the riots prior to Baltimore were bigger, more deaths and more destruction?

Here's a small excerpt from the 1965 riots that raged for 6 days:

"After a night of increasing unrest, police and local black community leaders held a community meeting on Thursday, August 12, to discuss an action plan and to 'urge calm'; the meeting failed. Later that day, Los Angeles police chief William H. Parker called for the assistance of the California Army 'National Guard'.[15]

The rioting intensified and on Friday, August 13, about 2,300 National Guardsmen joined the police trying to maintain order on the streets. That number increased to 3,900 by midnight on Saturday, August 14. Sergeant Ben Dunn said "The streets of Watts resembled an all-out "war zone in some far-off foreign country", it bore no resemblance to the United States of America."[citation needed] Martial law was declared and 'curfew' was enforced by the National Guardsmen who put a cordon around a vast region of South Central Los Angeles.[16] In addition to the guardsmen, 934 Los Angeles Police officers and 718 officers from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department were deployed during the rioting.[15]

Between 31,000 and 35,000 adults participated in the riots over the course of six days, while about 70,000 people were "sympathetic, but not active."[13] Over the six days, there were 34 deaths, 1,032 injuries, 3,438 arrests, and over $40 million in property damage. White Americans were fearful of the breakdown of social order in Watts, especially since white motorists were being pulled over by rioters in nearby areas and assaulted.

**[6] Many in the black community, however, saw the rioters as taking part in an "uprising against an oppressive system."[13] Black civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in a 1966 essay stated,

**"The whole point of the outbreak in Watts was that it marked the first major rebellion of Negroes against their own masochism and was carried on with the express purpose of asserting that they would no longer quietly submit to the deprivation of slum life."[17]**

Those actively participating in the riots started physical fights with police, blocked firefighters of the Los Angeles Fire Department from their safety duties, or beat white motorists. Arson and looting were largely confined to white-owned stores and businesses that were said to have caused resentment in the neighborhood due to perceived unfairness.[18]

Yisheng, I assume I am much older than you are but I honestly say that what happened in Baltimore and is happening now in Baltimore is nothing but another 'rerun' from the past.

And don't forget the Rodney King Watts riots in 1992. We've had enough riots to change police attitudes AND White attitudes. But as you know NEITHER ONE has changed.

Take it from me. NOTHING will change. Why should it? Do you really think anyone cares about poor Blacks?

    This is America, remember?

  12. The first area where the law can be changed is in the family court system. "I'm fi'n to put a child on him!" is a life sentence for many men, particularly many black men. Scrape and claw for child support, and still end up in the system every time your baby's mama feels like using uncle Charlie as a weapon against you.

The next area the law can change is to legalize drugs and get off this religious Puritanical kick of lording over people and enforcing morality. The war on drugs is messy and pointless.

Another area where the law can change is in the free reign of women to have as many babies as they want. You want a kid? Fine. Go have one. But if you're a single mother already on state assistance, already accepting welfare, you're not allowed to have another fatherless child to collect double the benefits. It's child abuse! And it should be illegal to keep adding children to the tally.

If we're really speaking about the welfare and betterment of children, then doing more to ensure a stable, safe environment is imperative. A black teacher in the classroom means little when a kid is going to home with five siblings, no father, no positive male role models in the home, and a mother who is not equipped to be a mother. Sorry, but the truth stings. Not all people are cut out to be parents, and just because you can biologically birth a child in no way means you can care for one.

Also, put restrictions on what welfare monies can purchase. The same with child support. Put it in a fund for the child, meaning every penny has to be spent in direct aid of the child.

How about mandatory job training or community college courses for long-term welfare recipients? Giving someone a hand in tough times is cool, but let's be perfectly honest here. Every person on this blog knows at least one person whose life is spent on the government's dime. A free extended ride is building generational dependency.

Another area: Get the public police unions out of law enforcement. Union bureaucracy and red tape keep bad police on the streets and drawing salaries. Unions have too much control.

On schools, too. Get the unions the fuck out of public schools! Bad teachers should be fired! Bottom line. If you're a teacher whose students do not make improvements, go find another job. If you're a mechanic who can't fix a car, you're not a mechanic. If you're a doctor whose patients keep dying, you're a quack. But if you're a teacher whose students suck ass at learning, you're given excuses, said to be underpaid, and protected by tenure after X years. Fire bad, stagnant teachers; teaching needs high turnover like the fast-food industry to make more of a meaningful impact. Fight for kids to fight for your career!

Lastly, if schmucks burn down their own neighborhoods, 0 public tax dollars go to cleanup and rebuilding. You broke it, you bought it.

These young men of color overwhelming vote Democrat, live in cities that are controlled by Democrats, pay less taxes than white men and receive more government assistance than white men.

So why are Democrats keeping men of color from getting opportunities? Why are men of color overwhelming voting for a political party that is keeping them down?

    ----

"It's tough to get a job with a felony on your sheet."

More reasons why young men of color shouldn't commit felonies. Hows about teaching young men of color to respect the law and their fellow citizens?

"How about creating more incentives (student loan forgiveness) to get more teachers of color in our classrooms?

Nothing like a role model in your class room dropping knowledge to set you on the straight and narrow path."

And we see how well that has worked out in Detroit, Atlanta and New Orleans.

Which to say it has made things worse......

    ------

Unfortunately, race relation will never get better. The racial grievance industry won't allow that to happen.

The racial grievance industry continues to embrace failed ideas of the past that has enriched them but hasn't moved the needle forward on race relations. If race relations were to ever improve, the racial grievance industry would go out of business.

So it's in the best interest of the racial grievance industry to keep the status quo.

Whitey's Oppression has all the answers for Blacks. Let us listen and obey. Had we listened to Whites centuries ago, we wouldn't be in the mess we are in today.

We would be docile slaves and stepping off the sidewalk when a wm or ww walks by. And, the most importantly, we would not dare look a wm or ww in the eye.

Lynching would still be allowed without any court proceedings whatsoever. A Civil War? Nope there would have been none.

Today, cops can shoot bm with impunity simply because whitey feels oppressed and afraid. That seems to be the message from the Whites on this blog.

It is true, there never will be respectful relations between Whites and Blacks. Hatred is a bitch.

Racism is a smoldering volcano that can and probably will erupt. The indecency and degradation of racists perpetrated on Blacks must come to an end.

Whitey's Oppression and Bill bring a lot of hatred and disrespect to Blacks on FN.

    **
But anyway Bill, I overestimated your intelligence again. Let me explain the points yet again in simple country-bumpkin terms that you might understand.

Oh and thanks for going to such great lengths to tell me what I already knew, Billy-boi.

As I have mentioned on many, many occasions, the gap between the rich and the rest in America has been growing steadily since the late 1970's, because nothing happens in American politics that does not help the rich.

America's Gini coefficient is now 91st in the world, meaning that the gap is now wider for you guys than it is in Russia and Iran (!). I have mentioned this little fact ooooh at least a dozen times on this blog, but of course I can't respect you to remember that.

Another thing I have mentioned probably a hundred times is that Obama is a conservative. Conservatives like to make the rich richer and the poor poorer. That's what they do.

But don;t just take my word for it - read this.

"The Democratic incumbent has surrounded himself with conservative advisors and key figures — many from previous administrations, and an unprecedented number from the Trilateral Commission. He also appointed a former Monsanto executive as Senior Advisor to the FDA. He has extended Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, presided over a spiralling rich-poor gap and sacrificed further American jobs with recent free trade deals. Trade union rights have also eroded under his watch. He has expanded Bush defence spending, droned civilians, failed to close Guantanamo, supported the NDAA which effectively legalises martial law, allowed drilling and adopted a soft-touch position towards the banks that is to the right of European Conservative leaders. Taking office during the financial meltdown, Obama appointed its principle architects to top economic positions. We list these because many of Obama's detractors absurdly portray him as either a radical liberal or a socialist, while his apologists, equally absurdly, continue to view him as a well-intentioned progressive, tragically thwarted by overwhelming pressures. 2008's yes-we-can chanters, dazzled by pigment rather than policy detail, forgot to ask can what? Between 1998 and the last election, Obama amassed $37.6million from the financial services industry, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. While 2008 presidential candidate Obama appeared to champion universal health care, his first choice for Secretary of Health was a man who had spent years lobbying on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry against that very concept. Hey! You don't promise a successful pub, and then appoint the Salvation Army to run it. This time around, the honey-tongued President makes populist references to economic justice, while simultaneously appointing as his new Chief of Staff a former Citigroup executive concerned with hedge funds that bet on the housing market to collapse. Obama poses something of a challenge to The Political Compass, because he's a man of so few fixed principles."

    source:politicalcompass.org

Even the few remaining half-way intelligent conservatives think Obama is a conservative.

There is, however, a low-cost reform that can be accomplished by our present administration with neither virtually no new expenditures nor any expansion of government.
All it would take is a real political will to restore justice and to change our current punitive policy. A policy we embarked on as a nation only a generation ago—yet one that has been more destructive to the basic dignities of our citizenry than any other I can think of; the policy of stripping the citizenship of our men and women who are convicted of a crime.
But some would say, “what do you mean?” After all, stripping a U.S. citizen of their citizenship was declared cruel and unusual punishment by the Supreme Court following the infamous case of American Army lieutenant Philip Nolan, who renounces his country during a trial for treason and is consequently sentenced to spend the rest of his days at sea without so much as a word of news from America.
Yet we do exactly that to unnamed thousands of Americans every day. Our society is far more willing to go “hard on crime” than to admit the failures of our many concurrently-run “wars” on crime, drugs, violence, and a litany of other social ills.
But was it always so? No, not at all.
Until the 1960s, state laws routinely granted all civil rights to former convicts upon completion of their sentences. This meant that even though a man or woman would have to live with the stigma of having broken the law, they would still be able to participate in all the usual activities of civic life: voting, running for office, holding a professional license, even owning firearms; NONE of these activities were barred to former convicts.
The idea was simple. Your debt to society was paid, and now you were expected to return to society and engage in the kind of productive lifestyle that would benefit both you and your community. Though it would be known that this person was a felon, once that person’s debt to society, their punishment, was paid; they would be free to again become part of society.
These laws were often very specific, as example, a law on the books until the 1950s in the State of Indiana (noted for a very conservative, tough-on-crime legal system since the days of LBJ), stated that former inmates at the state prison were to be given twenty-dollars in gold and a firearm upon being released.
    So what happened?
Well, the Kennedys and Viet Nam and the problems with those pesky youth of the baby boomers era: drugs, Manson, protest movements-led to those first waves of anti-crime hysteria. In the wake of a handful of violent crimes, sweeping new powers regulating firearms were passed. Never mind that these laws were unconstitutional and removed civil rights from entire populations of Americans, especially young, Black, male, Americans; the powers that be were afraid and changes had to be made.
    America never looked back.
Now some half-century later, we collectively gaze upon the wreckage of our rapidly dying social contract and wonder how it came to be that no one seems able to right the good ship of our floundering State. The time has come for a truly transformative act on the part of our current national administration. An act that has the power to bring about real healing and restoration in our most damaged and suffering communities, whatever the color of their inhabitants; an act that would be equal for all, thereby voiding the cries of favoritism of one group over the other.
I call on President Obama and the Government of the United States to pass the Civil Rights Restoration Act of 2015.
This act would make it a national law, that all citizens convicted of a felony shall have their full civil rights restored to them upon completion of their criminal sentences and any probationary period or parole they are lawfully required to complete.

Listen Skid, the reason the President hasn't done more is because: 1) The rethugs block every damn thing and 2) He wants to survive his Presidency.

If you don't get that, it's because you're too DUMM.

PilotX, here's a link re: Rick Santorum's coming announcement that he will run for President in 2016.

I thought you would be very interested since it Santorum's degrading name of Blacks (Blahs) that you adopted for yourself and continue to use today.

We are a screwed up race of weak minded 'blah' folks.

Nevertheless, I am sure you think highly of him and will vote for him.

What we've seen in Baltimore and Ferguson are only the beginning. Yes what we witnessed last week was not more than a practice run. It's not over. Black people killed at the hands of police is shining a spot light a much larger and wider societal problem. People watching these events are seeing people in concentrated areas where everyone living there is poor. It's a problem that the civil rights movement didn't do great job in dealing with the matter of poverty. It occurred to me today while commuting home from work that the problem began with the freeing of slaves and not having a plan of making them a part of the society. No one bother to ask the question of where are they going and what are they going to do, and as far as I know we still haven't ask which means no need to bother to answer something that not asked.

This a story of our lives, we just seem not to want to face a problem. I don't know but there seems to that we travel on the road of perpetual denial. We believe (I'm speaking in the collective for the sake of discussion) that the family will us from crime, war, disease or any on malfunction that befalls society. This reminds me of a Portlandia skit where they think everything can be pickled. Yes, the family will fix everything. Father can't be at the head of the family if he's serving time for a low-level offense and let's not discuss the policy to set that into play because that wouldn't be admitting that we botched it and now we don't know to what were doing in the first place.

I have to give it us humans, we sure now how to create complex problems to such an extent that we don't what to do to solve them. Oh yes, that's right the family is the answer. Forgive me forgetting that solution.

Before I forget, Kareem Abdul Jabbar wrote a great commentary piece about Baltimore being just the beginning http://ti.me/1AFKsl6.

Thanks for letting me a comment. Have a good evening everyone!

We've been living with each other for 500 years, there's nothing to discuss about race relations. We hate each other's guts. That's the race relations. White folks must have been afraid of the cotton bugs, because they couldn't bring themselves into the hot sun to pick it; they went to Africa of all damn places, and here we all are, miserable as can be; black sons getting killed 2 a day, by white men or getting thrown into cages like dogs by white men; getting killed by black men too. Let me say this again, we hate each other's guts. That's the "Race Relations". No end in sight. End of discussion.
