Land of the free and the home of the gun.

*"My dogs getting put down every day out there Mr. B. It's crazy."

That's what a client I visited in one of Philly's  prisons told me over the weekend.

He has every right to feel the way that he does. Sadly, the murder rate is rising in Philly and  everywhere else in the country. People don't even fight anymore. Got beef? Settle it with a gun. Today it's not the slickest dude with his fists who is the most feared; it's the craziest dude with a gun.

I read an editorial from the New York Daily News which I think sheds some light on the problem.

"States with the toughest gun laws suffer gun-related deaths at the lowest rates, says a study that destroys the myth-making of America’s Second Amendment absolutists.

The zealots say it all the time: The more freely guns are made available, the fewer people will die from bullet wounds. No one with any common sense has ever believed this nonsense; now there’s data to back up the gut.

Numbers crunched by National Journal document that gun rights advocates are dead wrong in claiming that easily arming law-abiding citizens would cut the murder rate — while also showing that the ready availability of guns makes them a factor in higher rates of suicide (which account for two-thirds of gun deaths), accidental deaths and other fatal non-criminal shootings.

Breaking down the grand total of gun-related deaths, National Journal showed that the states with the lowest number per capita — Hawaii (2.6 deaths per 100,000 people in 2013), Massachusetts (3.1), New York (4.2), Connecticut (4.4), Rhode Island (5.3) and New Jersey (5.7) — have among the nation’s most restrictive firearm purchasing and possession laws.

These include requiring (not in every state, but in most) a permit for gun purchases, universal background checks and regulations that make it awfully hard to get a permit to carry a concealed weapon — or carry a gun in the open.

Meanwhile, the six states with the highest number of gun deaths in the nation have dangerously permissive laws: Wyoming (16.7 deaths per 100,000 people in 2013), Arkansas (16.8), Alabama (17.6), Mississippi (17.8), Louisiana (19.3), Alaska (19.8).

In all these states, no permit is required to purchase a handgun. There are no universal background checks. Handguns don’t have to be registered. It’s pretty easy to get a concealed-carry or open-carry permit — if any permit is required at all.

As for gun murders, homicide rates for weak- and strong-gun-law states were roughly comparable, powerfully undermining the notion that a society in which everyone and his brother is free to own a gun is a society safer from the horror that firearms inflict on human flesh.

SUNY Cortland political science Prof. Robert Spitzer wrote in these pages Monday that obtaining a gun permit in New York required him to jump through hoops that Roanoke TV murderer Vester Flanagan would never have been able to, including providing his employment history and four character references attesting to psychological fitness and moral character.

The process even included an in-person interview with the local police precinct and could have triggered review by a county judge.

Smartly preventing people, including potentially unstable individuals, from obtaining weapons can make the country safer and save some of the 30,000 lives lost annually to gun violence." [Source]

There are others issues to be sure: A lack of jobs and job training programs for poor inner city kids; poor home training and a lack of  coping and social skills; and a war on drugs that is clearly not working.

Before leaving my client I tried to give him some words of encouragement. "Don't worry young buck, we will have you home soon."  That didn't seem to be what he wanted to hear. "Honestly Mr. B, I am not even in a rush to get back on these streets. I feel much safer in here."

Brother Field, every time I read a post like this, I want to run out and purchase a gun to protect myself. You see, I live in the hood and I don't have a gun. However, I will get one if you think I should.

It's been 60+ years without a gun and I wonder if it's worth it. I once asked Lilac if I should buy a gun. I think I asked the wrong sister because the woman has an arsenal that would make an army smile.

Seriously, Field, do you think I should own a gun for protection from the cops and brothers? Maybe I should buy a gun to protect me from the women?

"Sadly, the murder rate is rising in Philly and everywhere else in the country."

Of course it is. The Obama administration has declared a war on local policing, and has encouraged criminals to rise up and police to stand down.

Perhaps your client, who I assume is a criminal if he is in jail, should reconsider the company he keeps if his buddies keep getting shot and killed by other criminals.

I don't worry about being shot and don't know a soul who has been shot in all my 58 years of life.

I live in an open carry state.

I bet that FieldNegro was reading at a higher grade level as a 12 year old than the majority of people in prison. Is it because FieldNegro is smarter than those in prison or did FieldNegro simply win life's lottery by popping out of educated parents.

  6. In Oakland, I see a process where guns are used as power symbols, and worse, as excuses not to learn the social skills required to live in a population density this high. Why learn to reason with people you disagree with when winning the argument is as easy as pulling your gun out of your pocket?
I was raised around and with guns, was given my first shotgun for Christmas when I was nine. I managed to have the foresight to leave all of my guns at my dad's house in Eureka when I moved to Oakland in '84, when I was 23. It was an uncharacteristically smart move on my part, as I had no more use for them, and they would have been gone and in the hands of criminals after the first burglary anyway.
I've lived in (all the worst parts of) Oakland for 31 years, and never once wished that I had a gun. In fact, there were a couple of times I remember where it would have gone very badly indeed had I been carrying one.
These days, after witnessing more than my share of actual carnage, I subscribe to the three C's theory of concealed carry: cops, criminals, and cowards.

On the topic of gun violence, Republican Congressman (and chair of the House Rules Committee) Pete Sessions of Texas is sounding a somewhat Stormfront-y note. In Sessions' opinion, we shouldn't look at our nation's easy access to guns as a contributing factor in America's violent crime rates. Nope. That's not it.

The real problem (drum roll, please) is: diversity.

From his interview with some Texas wingnut talk radio dude:

“'It [the gun violence] has a lot to do with distrust of people. Chris, I have been in lots of societies, we could say like Japan, where they have a homogeneous society, where people are more alike,' Sessions said. He went on to discuss 'this thought process that we have to have diversity in America.'”

He goes on to blame immigration for crime and to make deranged Trumpesque suggestions for revoking birthright citizenship. Although with that earlier comment, it sounds like he would very much like to go farther in making the country more "homogeneous," like Japan. (Please note that his example of the type of crime caused by too much diversity is the Vester Flanagan shootings. Vester Flanagan was not an immigrant.)

I am extremely curious about Mr. Sessions' "thought process" on how he would un-diversify the country. Sadly, he does not provide any further detail on this.

The rather disturbing interview is here:

  14. 'this thought process that we have to have diversity in America.'

Sessions is correct. Diversity = conflict.

As America becomes less and less homogeneous, our politics and society become more and more fractured.

A cursory look at the daily headlines reveals America’s growing unhappiness and across-the-spectrum dissatisfaction with core institutions. Most of these pieces focus on increasing political acrimony and express confusion in pondering just why it is that “Americans” are becoming more irascible by the day. What could it possibly be?

The more diverse a population is, the harder it is to satisfy a majority of the people, with each segment having competing interests and vocal demands for their own to be accommodated foremost. Those not fully appeased will be furious. And simple math demands they will be in the vast majority.

But that's racist talk. It may very well be that Somali Muslim clansmen in Minnesota have notions of government that are copacetic with their Scandinavian socialist neighbors. And newly arrived Mexicans will stop ethnically cleansing former African American neighborhoods and want instead to live side by side their black brothers. Things will probably all work out for the best, probably.

  16. Bill, when I was an undergrad at a major southern university, I volunteered for a prison literacy program. It was clear early on that the guy in jail for running numbers had the smarts to be a CPA. The prisoner known for talking his way out of trouble, could have been an Attorney. In fact, the major difference between those of us on the outside and prisoners is socioeconomic status, half-way decent schools, and opportunity.

My question is how can people expect a person to excel, when they dodge bullets on the way to school, often arriving there hungry, in a shitty school, with shifty teachers??

America was created so that a certain number of the population would be poor and dependent on the "upper class", so don't bitch and moan because America's little experiment has backfired on your asses.

My point wasn't about the intelligence, it was about the childhood their parents gave them.

I've never met you nor the CPA prisoner, I'm willing to bet you had many many more books in your house for your child to read/learn than he had. I'll double down... when you child asked you "why is," the answer you gave was much different than the answer his mom gave.
If he was your child I doubt he would be in prison, much more likely to be excelling in college. The difference between prison and college was not having you as a mother.

Both. Out of the four burglaries I have experienced in 31 years, only one of them was in East Oakland. There is more money to be had burglarizing homes in North Oakland, Piedmont, and in the hills than there is in stealing from the poor people, who don't generally have anything worth fencing or trading for drugs. If I had gotten to know my neighbors in North Oakland better, and sooner, I probably could have avoided at least one of the three burglaries that happened there. After I learned that lesson, things got a lot better.

    -----

The only factor that really matters is #2. Portland is run by Democrats and has strict guns laws, but since it is 85% white, they don't have a murder problem.

Regarding factor #1, if law and order Republicans ran the hoods, it would help, but you can only do so much and stay within the bounds of the Constitution. Giuliani had great success in New York, but the black population is only 25% (and falling) and a city run by and for Jews can get away with things like "Stop and Frisk" that other cities can't. A lot of TNB crime is such that you could have a cop on every corner of the ghetto and it wouldn’t make one bit of difference.

As for #3, letting the good people defend themselves would make the predators think twice, but the impulsive murders like those done for being dissed would continue.

Blaming guns is yet another case of externalizing blame for black behavior. White neighborhoods with much higher gun ownership rates have less than 1/10 the murder rate. When people make the "too many guns" argument, what they are really saying is that blacks can't handle the responsibility of gun ownership.

"And while it is true that crime rates have been falling since their peak in the '90s, I'm not sure that they're the lowest they've ever been. The numbers I've seen indicate we haven't even gotten back to the rates of the 1960s."

To be clear, I should have said "a peak" in the the '90s, rather than "their peak." I do not want to imply that the '90s was an all-time peak for crime levels. It wasn't. It was only the highest crime period within the last several generations.

Of course, if one wanted to go back far enough in history, one could find much worse crime rates. But we shouldn't be using the mayhem of the 18th and 19th centuries as some kind of standard for how things should work in the modern world.

I didn't say guns are driven by income inequality. I said crime is driven by income inequality.

A huge portion of crime is driven by economics. When you have a group of poor people with no realistic option for advancement living cheek-by-jowl alongside rich people, the poor people will tend to rob the rich people. This is how human beings work.

None of that means that economics is the ONLY motivation for crime. Of, course, even in some kind of communist utopia with total economic equality, there would also be people committing violence for non-economic reasons. That White House staffer took a shot at her boyfriend for a classic non-economic reason -- he was boning some other chick.

But in both cases, guns are a factor because they facilitate crime. Crimes are easier to commit when guns are available. Some crimes won't be committed if guns aren't available. Others will still occur, but their severity will be reduced (a mass stabbing is much more difficult to pull off than a mass shooting).

If you take away one of the major motivations for violent crime, as well as the primary tool for committing violent crime ... violent crime tends to go down.

I don't really expect conservatives to understand any of this, though, because they do not want to understand.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Black Lies Matter12:17 PM

"guns are a factor because they facilitate crime. Crimes are easier to commit when guns are available"

Guns also deter crime. Crimes are more difficult to commit when your victim is armed.

It may be a bit of old trope but it is still true that "guns don't kill people, people do".

In a free society, people have moral agency. They are entrusted with the responsibility of obeying the laws, regardless of whatever means of breaking them is in their hands.

In the progressive worldview, the average person is not be trusted as a full and free adult, but rather must be treated as a ward of the state. The state must have a complete monopoly on violence, even that used in self-defense.

I don't really expect liberals to understand any of this, though, because they do not want to understand. Or more accurately, they do not want to be free adults, and they insist that no one else be allowed to either.

That was from the things I wish I never wrote department.

Interesting debate on the matter. Let's see if big bad Bill can put the BLM movement out of business. My first guess is no
    ---

Of course the Obama/Holder/Sharpton BLM movement is encouraging these cop muders - that is what is was designed to do. That, and get out the vote.

    Bill O'Reilly?

Doesn't FieldNegro keep mocking those 3 million fox viewers in a country of 321 million?

The word "ambush" is missing from the article.

A cop being shot in a shoot-out is one thing.

A cop being shot in the back filling his gas tank is very different.

Which explains why your link avoided that "ambush" word.

Just wanted to say, that I just read something that makes me think that Trump is going to be the next President.

I'm beginning to think he might not be bad at all, being that he's a savvy businessman...

"Pssst, we didn't even notice that you were here." FN

    ===========================================

I volunteered in my free time for 10 years with drop out, poor black adults providing reading, writing, and math classes so they could take their GED; assistance with low cost health care; and free child care for their kids. While many were as respectful of me as I was of them, there were several who let me know they didn't like my white skin and resented me.

But, you are right. I'm sure many didn't care I was 'here' for them. I finally got the message.

anon 8:32pm, i am horrified that there were black students who resented you when you were only trying to help.

On behalf of the entire black race I want to extend my deepest and most sincere apologies. I don't know where you live but my guess is that you live in the Bay Area. Those Negroes appreciate nothing. I really don't understand why they are like that. It doesn't make sense.

This racial stuff shouldn't be happening but when you have brothers like Field bitching and moaning about nothing and stirring up racist boogymen there is going to be problems.

As a bm, I believe blogs like FN should be outlawed. That would be helpful in taking back America.

It's not the "entire black race" that has the problem with white people. I have middle class black neighbors and coworkers. There is no resentment or strife. We get along and work together well.

And the animosity with white people isn't a function of Field Negro's blog, who I've read for the last two years to try and understand some aspects of black culture I could never get in my day to day life.

There is, however, a big problem with low class blacks being told recently that their problems are because of the white people and their hatred is more palpable now than anytime I've experienced in the last ten years. I've never felt hated until recently. Thus, my quitting my volunteer work. I won't be abused no matter who decides to do it.

"So gun deaths are OK as long as they are accidents or suicides?"

Does it matter if someone who wants to die kills themself with a handgun, a rifle, sleeping pills, a noose or carbon monoxide from a car?  People who really want to die will find a way.  Many of them are old and sick and have no other options.

    "Kill white men.
    Fuck white women."

That is exactly the philosophy of the n*****s who created Haiti.  How did that work out for them?  Oh, right... it's the poorest and worst-off nation in the entire Western hemisphere, that's how.  Even when Blacks ask for White women to sire their children on, they fail.  Miserably.

"Guns are for killing, and killing only."

I pointed a gun at a (White) man's head once.  I did not kill him; he decided that messing with me was too much trouble and went away.  In other words, guns are not just for killing, they are also for telling troublemakers to go make trouble elsewhere.  In the case of Blacks, that message does not appear to get through.  This is because Blacks in general are stupid.
