They recently sent me an e-mail which I am going to share with you because the s**t is that serious.
"Dear Wayne,
Schools should be a place for learning, not spreading racist ideology. But not in Texas. This fall, five million children across Texas were given textbooks that profess the same toxic and distorted view of history professed by Dylann Roof and defenders of the Confederate Flag.
These textbooks omit, sanitize, and downplay how horrible slavery was and glorify historical figures who defended slavery. All because the Texas State Board of Education has an agenda to promote a neo-Confederate ideology.
And if the Texas State Board of Education has their way, future textbooks could be even worse than they are right now.1 Future textbooks could remove altogether any references to Jim Crow, the Ku Klux Klan and the Black Codes- the foundation for modern day prison labor exploitation. The half-truths and omissions in these educational materials will teach a new generation of children a deliberately distorted view of American history and the story of race in our country.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. If we put factual and accurate educational materials about Black history in school libraries across Texas, we can give countless students access to the resources they need to learn the truth. Join the fight to get books about Black history directly into the hands of children across Texas.
The harm that these textbooks do is real. Not only are these whitewashed textbooks inaccurate and racially damaging, they even hurt the academic performance of both Black and white students. Studies have shown that both Black and white students who are exposed to negative racial stereotypes about Black people perform significantly worse on standardized tests.23
The intentional whitewashing of the story of the Civil War happens as early as grade school and not just in the books you read. Right now there are 29 schools in Texas named after generals like Robert E. Lee. There are textbooks and educational videos that glorify politicians like John C. Calhoun, who believed that owning, abusing and exploiting Black humans was key to achieving the American dream and was the architect behind the enforcement of the Indian Removal Act. Too often, the stories and truths of all the Black and Brown folks that built this country are either censored or completely left out of the books we consume from early on in life."
I don't usually do this kind of thing, but... OK, I will go ahead and give the COC folks some love.
Help support our work. ColorOfChange.org is powered by YOU.
They remind me of a little kid: "I didn't make that mess, somebody else did!"
ReplyDelete-Doug in Oakland
COC wants leftist schools to propagandize all Texas kids like they do the rest of the country.
ReplyDeleteGo figure.
Field, those books in TX aren't that bad. I am a bm in Texas and I should know.
ReplyDeleteSo why are you making a big deal about this? You Yankees need to mind your own business and leave Texas alone.
You are always beating up on Texas but the Blacks in Texas have no complaints. Ever hear of any Blacks rioting or #BLM in Texas? I rest my case.
The Black Panthers tried Texas and got ran out of the state. We don't go for all that Black and White bullshit...There why we don't have any trouble here.
Whites stay in their place and Blacks stay in their place. There is no racism here, just life happening as life does.
Texas is working overtime to raise the next generation of ignoramuses with their revisionist history books (which actually omit all kinds of rather important stuff, not just slavery and Jim Crow).
ReplyDeleteYou wonder where all the idiot wingnuts come from? This is where.
Kill white men and take their women.
ReplyDeleteThe extra-annoying part of the Texas schoolbook saga is that because Texas is such a big state, their warped educational standards might end up affecting other states. Book publishers don't want to have to create one book for Texas and separate one for the rest of the country, so students in Ohio or Nevada could be forced to learn that George Washington invested the microwave oven -- or whatever other creative dumbassery the Lone State's school board happens to come up with.
ReplyDeleteA lot of ancient African civilization history has been covered up. The horrors of slavery have been covered up. Historians are trying to cover up the role of taxes and England in the Civil War. Even recent history and current events are covered up. They tell us whatever they want. I lost respect for MoveOn but not COC.
ReplyDeleteThey tell us a lot about Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Some stuff about lunch counters, fire hoses, and sitting in the back of the bus.
ReplyDeleteThat's about all they tell us.
Field, the thing about Texas that no one is talking about is "Yes" there was slavery in the USA but there was no slavery in Texas. That's a fact. Slavery happened in the deep South.
ReplyDelete"After the Texas Revolution ended in 1836, the Constitution of the Republic of Texas made slavery legal. The General Provisions of the Constitution forbade any slave owner from freeing his slaves without the consent of Congress and forbade Congress from making any law that restricted the slave trade or emancipated slaves." From Wikipedia.
ReplyDelete-Doug in Oakland
This may be district defendant, but I know educators in Texas who surprised me with how much their school systems DO teach about slavery.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'll say this AGAIN, Texas is BY FAR the best Southern state I've ever spent time in.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is that in Texas there is an elected board that approves textbook content so it gets political. Some of the members of these boards may not even have any expertise in the chosen field. This is no way to figure out what goes into textbooks but Texas is a goofy state so this shouldn't surprise anyone. I remember when they tried to sneak creationism into biology textbooks. Red states are quite special.
ReplyDeleteURGH auto correct!!
ReplyDeleteFYI, Texas is no longer a red state. It is turning blue. As Yisheng has noted, Texas treats Blacks better than most states. Again, TX did not have slavery during slavery and its educational books are an attempt to show this.
ReplyDeleteAs Yisheng has said from her direct experience, Whites treated her better than any other state. Maybe that's why Blacks in Texas don't have anything to say about racism in TX?
Maybe things are good for the bm in TX, and maybe Field ought to find some other state to do his racism chasing. Try the Eay Area. There is plenty of R to chase, even among Blacks who hate they are Black. The racism is profound.
" I remember when they tried to sneak creationism into biology textbooks. Red states are quite special."

Creationism 'should' be in school. Americans are hungry for spiritualism. What do you think all of excitement and hope over the Pope is about?
Leftist have drained every ounce of faith and religion and God out of this nation with its anti-religion, anti-God attitudes.
Enough of this bs by the God-hating Left. Man is NOT the alpha and omega of everything.
"Field, the thing about Texas that no one is talking about is 'Yes' there was slavery in the USA but there was no slavery in Texas. That's a fact. Slavery happened in the deep South."
ReplyDeleteBoy, you are obviously one of those deliberately mis-educated people. One of the reasons Texas seceded from Mexico and later joined the U.S. is because they wanted to own slaves and the Mexican authorities had decided to ban it.
In 1860 there were 182,566 slaves in Texas, 30 percent of the total population. In 1860 almost 25 percent of all white families in Texas owned at least one slave. Texas ranked 10th in total slave population and 9th in percentage of slave population.
Texas was not part of the Confederacy by accident.
@2:52, don't misquote my words I don't need an anonymous TROLL speaking for me, you got that?
ReplyDelete"As 'Business Insider' noted, the new textbooks come five years after the state board of education revised the curriculum. Republican board member Pat Hardy stated at the time that he considered slavery “a side issue” in the war.""
ReplyDeleteWell, slavery WAS a "side issue" in the war. Lincoln was willing to let slavery continue if the South was willing to stay in the union. But the South decided they wanted to secede from the Union. That was the 'main issue'.
Even today, African Americans, descendants of former slaves are still considered a 'side issue' in America. Blacks are still at the bottom of the rung in America as a result of being considered inferior to Whites. As far as education is concerned, recognizing White superiority over Blacks IS a central point of education not only in Texas but in America.

No one is 'mis-quoting' you. You made a clear and undeniable statement of love for Texas. You have mentioned it before in another thread. Obviously you want people to know how you feel about Texas. I was just acknowledging your comment.
I am not in the biz of misquoting people. The truth is the truth....wear it.
"Well, slavery WAS a 'side issue' in the war. Lincoln was willing to let slavery continue if the South was willing to stay in the union. But the South decided they wanted to secede from the Union. That was the 'main issue'."
ReplyDeleteNo, he wasn't. Re-uniting the country was obviously the first order of business once the South seceded, but it was never a realistic prospect that slavery would continue.
There is a quote by Lincoln made to abolitionists that is wrongly misinterpreted by some people to mean that he didn't want to end slavery, when all he was saying was that his more immediate concern at that moment was defeating the South and reunifying the country. The entire reason the South had seceded upon Lincoln's election is because they knew he wanted to end slavery (although he had hoped to do it by having the federal government buy the freedom of all the slaves).
The Seymour Hersh version of the bin Laden raid is interesting. It's very different from the Zero Dark Thirty/official version. I don't know if Hersh is right or not but I don't have any problem believing that our government and media will just make shit up.

ReplyDeleteI'd normally suggest Khan Academy, but I don't think they produce English/Reading videos for special needs adults.
The anon saying there was never any slavery in Texas is trolling you. Poorly.
ReplyDelete@2:52, one more thing.
ReplyDeleteThe majority of the residents of Texas are NOT White and I'm PURPOSELY excluding Mexicans that identify as White. According to the U.S. census, Texas is only ~ 44% White by my definition.
So the lying ass statement about Blacks and Whites that you attributed to me is not only a damn lie, but proof that in your ENTIRE LIFE, you haven't travelled any further than you can smell your own farts. And as stankin' as your ass is, that's not too far.
@949, I don't give a shit about some anonymous troll thinking there was no skavery in Texas. Hell, I wouldn't give a damn if he/you thought there was no slavery in America.
ReplyDeleteBesides, I'd hate for Field's trolls to dispute the notion that he has the dumbest trolls on ANY black blog, LOL!!!
How do you know his ass is " stankin'" and is it normal for black women to go around sniffing asses?

---
Is that a problem that the people who approve textbooks are accountable to the voters of that state?
The other 49 states have unelected ideologues who pick the textbooks for their students, which is why we have this uniform mush of leftist propaganda being force fed to most American students.
Honestly, talk to someone under 30 today. Most have no idea what the Civil War was about or even what century it was. They don't know anything about the founding or the wars we have be in or how the country was built. To them, history started in 1965. Before that, there was slavery and being mean to Indians.
COC wants Texas to fall in line, because every child must be indoctrinated in the same stunted, one -sided America-hating, leftist-narrative promoting social justice history.
Let the people of Texas decide for themselves what the you want to teach their children.

Dumbocrats suffered historic losses in the last couple elections and the rethug ruling class didn't do as their voters voted for. Rethug voters are not happy with what their leaders are doing.
Meanwhile, dubmocrats are still pushing very old white career politicians.

Dumbocrats have to run against the Obama agenda to win. Which party is in trouble?

ReplyDeleteOur history is often stolen as soon as it happens. Sometimes the media is afraid their competition will make them look stupid and they'll briefly report something before they sweep it under the rug. Most of us can see that Fox News is propaganda. But the rest of the corporate media is too. One example is Chris Matthews calling the Iraq War a mistake over and over. They lied us into war on purpose. Research things for yourself and figure out what makes sense. There is a lot of BS on the internet but you can usually find the truth. For example, the lies in the lead up to the Iraq War were pretty well exposed as they happened in online copies of some newspaper articles. At the time, MSNBC was owned by the biggest military supplier there is, GE. They lied their asses off, and still do. So do the other mainstream corporate media networks. The Civil War was 150 years ago. We see Texas lying now, but Northern bias historians have lied too. I wonder what historians will say the Iraq War was about in 150 years. The truth is is the truth even if nobody believes it.

ReplyDeleteNBC News could take a lesson from liberals’ beloved Ahmed Mohamed when it comes to staging Islamophobia. Remember this?
ReplyDeleteNBC’s scheme to create a racial incident at a NASCAR race has fizzled. The idea was to let loose some Middle Eastern-looking people dressed up like Arabs at a race, then secretly film as the bigoted gap-toothed Neanderthals MSM elitists regard normal Americans to be act rudely toward them.
According to NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston, an NBC crew was on site at last Sunday’s race in Martinsville, Virginia; they “walked around and no one bothered them.” How disappointing for the execs at NBC.
As Poston observed:
Any legitimate journalist in America should be embarrassed by this stunt. The obvious intent by NBC was to evoke reaction.
NBC admitted as much in a statement:
We were intrigued by the results of a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll and other articles regarding increasing anti-Muslim sentiments in the United States.
Moonbat-run tech companies have been offering Ahmed jobs. But disemboweling a clock doesn’t require much technical expertise. Hate hoaxing is where his real talent lies. Why doesn’t NBC News offer him work?

This is very amusing.
ReplyDelete"These textbooks ... glorify historical figures who defended slavery. All because the Texas State Board of Education has an agenda to promote a neo-Confederate ideology."
The correspondent does not say anything about the significance of these figures in United States history. All he does is subject them to his modern litmus test (presumably, anything short of abolitionism is "pro-slavery") to decide whether or not they should be included in the curriculum. There seems to be no limit to this; no lesser men than presidents of the United States, including Washington and Jefferson, have been nearly "un-personed" because they owned slaves.
One wonders if he would be willing to subject contemporary and modern Arabs and Africans to the same standard of judgement. I would bet that if he was questioned about significant figures elsewhere and elsewhen, his reaction would be "who?"
"These textbooks omit, sanitize, and downplay how horrible slavery was"
But he ignores any and all non-Whites who practiced it, here and elsewhere. A great many free Africans in America owned slaves. Elsewhere, Arabia officially practiced chattel slavery of Africans until the 1960's (Malcolm X reported slave markets in Mecca when he made the hajj) and there is unofficial slavery there today. Slavery persists in both east and west Africa in the 21st century. If one insists on a full account, one must put in the textbooks that slavery as a lifetime, inherited condition of Africans was brought to the Virginia colony in 1655 by a court judgement in favor of an African man, one Anthony Johnson, who successfully argued in his suit that slavery was part of his tradition (culture) and he should be deemed owner-for-life of one John Casor.
Neither would any textbook be complete without accounts from ex-slaves about how they missed being taken care of by "massah". A great many of them felt abandoned, not knowing how to deal with commonplace things even in the 1870's. They literally felt like children who lost their parents.
How I would love to see the footnotes on this piece! (continued)
"Future textbooks could remove altogether any references to Jim Crow, the Ku Klux Klan and the Black Codes- the foundation for modern day prison labor exploitation."
ReplyDeleteThey could do much, much worse by your lights than simply ignoring them. They could treat them fully and fairly—for instance, noting that "wilding", "flash mobs", "drive-bys" and "the knockout game" were unknown during that era, for the simple reason that the "Black community" knew that it would come under swift and certain punishment if its children were allowed to act so badly. Only "civil rights" allows them to get away with such criminality today. And do I need to mention the ghettoization and outright physical destruction of entire cities because of Black crime and ethnic cleansing of Whites?
Everything you touch turns to shit. Before the civil rights Pharisees insisted that everyone was equal because otherwise nature was guilty of moral crimes, this was understood and your faults and deficiencies kept from having large impacts outside the "community". Today, there is no limit to what you can destroy. That will continue until Black-Run America can no longer borrow money to stucco over the holes you keep shooting in the façade of the Potemkin village.
