OPEN THREAD FRIDAY.

MORE DISCLAIMERSGive me your thoughts about whatever you want.

Although I was wondering, what do you think of trump flip flopping once again and backing out of the debate with Bernie Sanders? (They are calling him #ChickenTrump on twitter.)

Will this hurt or help him in the long run?

  1. I think at first it seemed like a clever strategy with no downside to try and elevate Hillary's opponent and take advantage of the fact that he wrapped his primary up before she did. Then the reality started to sink in and he started backpedaling and raising the money threshold he thought up as the prerequisite. Then Howard Dean went on TV last night and said sure, why not? It won't hurt Hillary, and Bernie will clean Trump's clock. And while I don't know whether it would have gamed out exactly that way, it does raise another issue, which is the fact that all of the debates Trump has participated (if you can call it that) in so far have been with Republicans only, and none of them were going to question basic Republican policy orthodoxy, which Trump may or may not actually believe in. The chance of a truly off putting (to conservatives, whom he must get every last one to vote for him to even have a chance at winning) off the cuff remark in the pie fight Trump would try to make out of a debate with Sanders was too much of a risk for a political novice trying to win the biggest election in the world.
Or Trump just decided he didn't want to do it, like he has decided he doesn't want to do all of the job of president. One of the two, or most likely both.

Saying you don't like black culture is fine, but most people will call you racist, even if you are married to a black person or are black yourself.

Racism used to be an action. Then it became words. Then thoughts. Today it is quickly becoming a lack of enthusiasm. If you are not enthusiastic enough in your praise for non-whites, you are called a bigot.

    What will tomorrow bring?

Under the statutes established during the Obama administration, the President may seize property, organize and control the means of production, seize commodities, assign military forces abroad, institute martial law, seize and control all transportation and communication, regulate the operation of private enterprise, restrict travel, and, in a variety of ways, control the lives of United States citizens.

There's a word for people who look at somebody and don't see a person, but only a race and gender.

That word used to be "racist"; now it's "progressive".

Bernie tends to like to stick to the issues. (Remember his comment "I'm sick of hearing about those damn e-mails, let's focus on the issues"? The last half of the thought is always left off in the media, BTW.)

A debate with Hillary, I believe Trump would derail to the point of dissing her character and regurgitating her scandals. Not much deep discussion on issues.

I think Trump ran scared, because Bernie would have held his feet to the fire.

It would undoubtedly have been an INTERESTING debate. The two anti-establishment candidates with different answers to the same voter anger. The establishment candidate against Trump would not have been so powerful, because they probably won't get past whether or not there even is voter rage, much less getting to address it.

Doug in Oakland, interesting thought that maybe Donald is trying to backpedal out of winning altogether?

It looked like Trump had an open goal here. It was an opportunity to sow dissension among the Democrats by temporarily elevating the 2nd place finisher over the actual Dem nominee, and dragging the debate into territory where both he and Bernie could tag-team-trash Hillary. So why did he turn it down? Because Trump realizes there is always the possibility in any debate with a smart opponent for him to end up looking like a massive tool, because Trump is just not that smart.

During the Republican debate, he was sharing a stage with mostly other dimwits, and anyone who wasn't a dimwit was hamstrung by Republican orthodoxy. They couldn't call out his offensive nonsense because it is offensive nonsense that Republican primary voters like. That won't work anymore when he debates either Bernie or Hillary. He will have to bring his A-game, and he does not have an A-game. So, for the general election season, he will avoid debates as much as possible and rely on defaming and slandering Hillary as much as humanly possible at rallies and in interviews. He will have all his surrogates fling lots of poo as well. He will pray that the media continues to coddle him and amplify all his clownish behavior, and that they not ask him any hard questions about his total ignorance of government policy matters or his dreadfully embarrassing personal life.

So ... Puerto Rico is screwed.

They need debt forgiveness, but Congress has decided to give them a territorial manager instead, who will come in and cut everything to the bone, close all the schools, sell off public property, just repossess the whole joint for the benefit of greedy hedge-funders. While the rest of the US is working on hiking the minimum wage to $15/hr, the minimum wage for young people in Puerto Rico will be REDUCED to $4.25/hr.

This is the same sort of revolting treatment meted out to Flint, Michigan, which resulted in them drinking lead.

If the Sanders team would been paying close enough attention to the clownish way in which Trump accepted the debate invitation, they would not have naively allowed themselves to be duped and made of look more desperate than they already do. Neither Trump or Sanders possess the temperament and judgment required to represent this country all over the world. Hillary is not perfect and has her human flaws, but she is still more qualified for the job than her two egocentric and narcissistic opponents.

No, I don't doubt there is a major problem with financial mismanagement in Puerto Rico's government. That debt didn't come out of nowhere. So it is important to get the island's finances on a stable footing.

It's actually a seven-member federal board that will effectively take over the government of Puerto Rico. And maybe it won't be that bad. Maybe they won't impose such horrific austerity. The board does have the ability to cancel out debt, but the question is whether they will actually do that, or whether they will simply bleed Puerto Rico dry to pay off the debtors. It's just concerning that there was no immediate debt write-off, but you're not gonna get that from a Republican Congress.

Anyway, I'll hope for the best for you guys. It sounds like a bad situation down there.

    ---

If Flint's black government managed things just fine, they wouldn't have needed a bankruptcy manager. The Flint water department was black. The Detroit water board who cut them off was black. Black people made these decisions, and when something bad happened, as usual they went up the ladder until they could find the first white man to blame.

I'm not saying white people couldn't have made these mistakes, but it was the Left who immediately grabbed this unfortunate occurrence in service of their race division agenda. Black victims/white malfeasors. Like almost everything you and your fellow travelers push, it's a pack of lies.

  23. How Many Transgenders In America?

The census bureau estimates about 6 transgenders/100,000 Americans.

    0.006% = About 20,000.

    To put it in perspective:

Albinism runs at about 1/17,000 worldwide.

Achondroplasia, the most common form of Dwarfism, occurs in 1 in 15,000 to 40,000 newborns.

Anorexia is estimated to occur in 0.9% to 4.3% of women and 0.2% to 0.3% of men in Western countries at some point in their life." Averaging this gives 1.5%, or about 250 times the transgender rate. Why discuss Anorexia? Because it is the most similar example of "Body Dysmorphia". Transgenders look in the mirror and see something that isn't there, or they obsessively wish that the image was different. How does that differ from Anorexia?

Transgenderism is celebrated and protected while Anorexia is treated aggressively, because when left untreated, anorexics die! Of course Transgenders die too, mostly by suicide (41% attempt or succeed). But this particular mental illness is a Civil Right. Just to be clear from a science perspective, you cannot change your gender. Gender is determined by your chromosomes. Females have two of the same kind of sex chromosome (XX), and are called the homogametic sex. Males have two distinct sex chromosomes (XY), and are called the heterogametic sex. You can carve up your genitals and ingest chemicals that change your appearence, but every cell in your body knows what gender you are.

If you care for someone, you don't celebrate and enable delusions that lead them to mutilate themselves and eventually become so miserable they kill themselves. There are people doing this to their children. Future generations will look back in horror at what we are doing to confused people in the name of equalitarian ideology.

I didn't say that Flint's government managed everything well. I said that they had no problem with the water system. (Although the story of Flint's governmental budget problems are tied up with problems of the regional economy, which are complicated. Flint's government didn't get into money trouble because they're just a bunch of fuck-ups.)

Right-wingers are now pretending that Flint's government made the decision to switch their water supply. They didn't, because they weren't in the driver's seat at that point; an emergency manager appointed by the governor was running the town.

Detroit didn't just cut Flint off. The emergency manager decided not to bother negotiating a new water agreement with Detroit because it would be cheaper to draw water from the local river while they waited for a new water supply system to come online. He didn't bother to figure out whether this was feasible or safe to do. He just saw cash savings.

People aren't attacking the manager because "he's the first white man to blame." They are blaming him because he IS to blame. What happened in Flint is a predictable result of what happens when you only care about dollars and not about people. And it's a predictable result of ugly Michigan politics, in which the state views the entire Detroit metro area as some kind of unpleasant boil or tumor they'd like to have surgically excised, rather than their fellow citizens.

Thanks for the well wishes, believe me we need all we can get! It is bad.

As for bleeding us dry, that's just about already happened! Not much blood left :)

Actually my thoughts,(and again I must qualify these as being politically uneducated:) are that perhaps this board would be a step in the right direction, and a step towards statehood.

Of course the politicos here have already started screaming, because that would take the monies out of their hands.

And I'll tell you something,as for the the "seven-member federal board that will effectively take over the government of Puerto Rico". Federal government already rules this island. It is owned by the U.S.,and ruled by the U.S. so that's a little confusing to me because the government that is now in place here is merely a government that implements the rules and regulations of the U.S. So "take over"??? It's already taken over :D But hey, ce la vie,if it wants to take over again, so be it, what the hell can we do about it anyway? lolol!

See, that's why I don't like politics! Confusinnggg!

  29. The important word y'all are leaving out of the Flint story is "Republican." As in the Republican governor sent emergency managers in to (predominantly black) cities and nullified their local governments. Yay democracy! There's a damn reason for the workings of local governments, like, say, investigating the probable effects of different water on an ageing lead-pipe delivery system. The emergency manager (and by extension the governor) fucked up, plain and simple. And their stupid, stupid actions poisoned an entire city and damaged their infrastructure to the tune of billions of dollars that nobody in Michigan has. So who was it again who couldn't govern their community or manage public funds? They may have been broke before, but now they have to come up with billions of dollars just to not be poisoned. Man, it sure would be a good (if a little late for a lot of children) time for some major infrastructure spending, wouldn't it? Oh yeah, Republicans would rather let the damn country crumble down to third world levels than spend any money on THEIR HOME.

In order to track down the white Republican responsible, this isn't a bad read:

    http://bridgemi.com/2016/02/flint-water-disaster-timeline/

No doubt there will be plenty of other opportunities for water issues going forward. My own take is that water delivery to houses happened in a lot of places at about the same time (with an associated lifetime), and it's all now in a fix-on-failure state with a lot of buried lead pipes out there. Due to the explosion in the cost of labor involving this kind of work, not a lot is going to get done ahead of disaster time.

There'll be plenty of badwhites out there to pin the blame on, so the outrage level can stay good and high for quite a long time.
