Leave him out.

Smithsonian-nmaahc-outside-20160720.jpgI was overjoyed and proud of my peeps for the building of the African American History and Culture Museum in Washington. It's long overdue if you ask me. But better late than never I guess.

Anyway, silly me, I told myself that I was going to take a trip down to Washington with the Mrs, spend the night, hit up a nice restaurant, and spend a day visiting the shiny new museum. Not!

What was I thinking? Tickets are sold out until at least March of 2017. Apparently the place is a hit, and getting a ticket is almost as tough as scoring a ticket to see Hamilton in New York.

So I was thinking about the museum and all of its early success, when I read the following article about one of my least favorite people on this earth.

"The National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. only has one reference to Clarence Thomas: that of Anita Hill testifying against him in his confirmation hearings.
But a petition launched from the StandUnited website is looking to change that, calling for Thomas’ inclusion in the museum as part of African-American history. The petition is called “Director for Smithsonian Museum of African-American Culture and History, Lonnie Bunch III : Don’t Overlook African American Leaders like Justice Clarence Thomas” and was launched on October 6. Already, it has garnered hundred of signatures.

“Justice Thomas is the longest-serving African American Supreme Court Justice in our nation’s history,” Angela Morabito, who is the senior campaign manager of the website, told CNSNews.com. “StandUnited users are commenting on the petition about how they want to see Smithsonian embrace history, instead of selectively editing it.”

“Justice Thomas has a uniquely American story, in all its complexity – he grew up in the segregated South, and is now the second most powerful African American man in government,” Morabito continued. “Petition signers think he deserves credit for his extraordinary contributions to American government and constitutional scholarship.”[Source]

You have got to be kidding me!

As Whitney used to say to Bobby: "Hell.To.The.No.!"

First of all, this Negro was traded from the Negro race years ago. We disowned this Negro, and everything that his cooning behind stands for.

White folks can embrace him if they want to,  and that's fine, but put him in your own museum. I suspect that he would prefer to be there with you in the first place.

And yet  he has his supporters. This is what his fellow traveler,  Armstrong Williams, wrote.

Clarence Thomas official SCOTUS portrait.jpg"No matter your view of Thomas’s conservative politics, it is simply undeniable that his record of jurisprudence on the Supreme Court over the past 25 years makes him one of the most important black figures of the post-civil rights era. While Thomas has not presented himself as a “race” leader per se — he’s much like Obama in that regard — the very fact that he wields the quiet power of the court and helps to settle so many of the nation’s most contentious and complex legal controversies cements his place in African American history.

Thomas must be given his due. Like him or not — and personally I admire him very much — he has been a groundbreaking advocate of the textualist approach to constitutional interpretation, perhaps even exceeding the record of the late justice Antonin Scalia. He has meticulously sought to remove what he regards as barnacles that have attached themselves to American law over the years. One of the most notable examples was his 2005 dissent in Kelo v. City of New London, a case in which the majority stretched to extremes the plain meaning of the Constitution to affirm the power of a local government, in cahoots with private developers, to seize and demolish the homes of citizens — indeed an entire thriving neighborhood — to make way for a corporate office complex..

It is something of an irony, then, that Thomas was left out of the African American Museum because of what can only be his principled dissent from the political orthodoxy of today’s African American leadership. By erasing Thomas in this way, however, the curators of the museum have done a grave disservice to the legacy of the African American experience in this country. And by denying Thomas a rightful place among the pantheon of African American achievers and strivers, they also deny themselves the very legitimacy they are seeking by erecting a monument in the heart of the nation’s capital."[Source]

No we are not. Clarence Thomas stopped viewing himself as an African American as soon as it stopped being convenient for him to play the race card. ( Remember his "High tech lynching" comment?)So why should he be honored in a museum next to real heroes who paved the way for us to be where we are today as a people?

I say leave him out.

I just hope that I get to make my visit before the folks at the museum change their minds.

  1. If you can discard Thomas, can I discard the bozo who appointed him? Actually, that wouldn't be fair because 1) we aren't building a white people museum, and 2) Poppy is the least awful living member of that clan, if only because he goes skydiving on his birthdays...

  4. Field, I could have told you the tickets were sold out in advance if you had asked, you know I used to liven the area.

But absolutely NOT, Thomas has NO BUSINESS being in that museum except to remind Black folks that people like him are the MAIN reason slaves could never successfully break from slavery.

On second though, put him in there in the Uncle Tom coon section next to Dr. Carson.

  5. The museum is supposedly a couple hundred feet from where slaves were bought and sold.

I am in agreement with you. Our experience in America has many facets, like a diamond, there are some rough and undesirable facets as well. The contrast must be shown, to have Blacks in such high positions and they are self- haters show that the white man stripping of self on others is masterful. My race has offered unique specimens. This love for the race that has brutalized us is a head shaker.

By the way, I would tell the whites to hold the ammo. We are speeding towards our own extinction in America.

Thomas is an embarrassment but history shouldn't be covered up. I would be for putting him in with an honest description of his record. Showing that black people don't think monolithically isn't all bad. On the other hand, it is like putting a slave catcher in the museum.

  19. A shame Mr. & Mrs. Field were unable to visit the museum during the trip to Wash., DC.

And regardless of the unfavorable sentiment of Justice Thomas amongst the African-American community, we lose credibility failing to note the historic significance of the first conservative African-American appointed to the Supreme Court.

There's already ample text supporting the myriad and complex views of Justice Thomas tenure on the court.

My understanding of the museum is one that speaks to history independent of conservative vs. liberal ideologies.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The African American History and Culture Museum is just that--a museum, not a popularity contest forum. Clarence Thomas indeed should be included and his contribution to rulings by the Supreme Court should be on display--warts and all. And this would include his decades-long silence on the bench, his standing in the African-American community (or lack, thereof), and the support he does have from admirers such as Armstrong Williams. The effect of his ruling that led to the gutting of the Voting Rights Act alone merits notice if not for the effect this has had on millions of voters who became disenfranchised.

If I may, let me introduce you to Chaim Rumkowski. Rumkowski was a Polish Jew who headed the Lodge ghetto during WWII. He's infamous for using his position to deport political rivals and extracted sexual favors from women living there; he was also known for beating people with his cane and implored Jewish parents to turn over their children to the Germans. He also successfully turned this area of Lodge into an industrial base, making supplies for the Wehrmacht in the belief that being an asset would save the doomed ghetto.

Is he a beloved figure such as Anne Frank or Janusz Korczak? No. But Rumkowski can be found just the same at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and other such institutions. So, let's not banish Clarence Thomas from the annals of African-African history or this newly minted museum. Like Chaim Rumskowski, Clarence Thomas has his place.

  24. Thanks for your sentiment SAP2, I actually DO like coming in this site because it's one if the few telling our stories. And if I didn't, I would either stay out of the comments section or stop visiting at all. Plus it's a TON of fun to remind racists that "a Black and a Woman" stays winning in her life while they stay losers! But the almost 8 years of cyberstalking/bullying I've had to deal with is no longer something I'm going to remain silent about.

That said, it's more than telling that in my real life compared to the one I experience here, most of the White folks I deal with everyday have the same career goals and vision that I do, proving healthcare services in underserved populations of people of color in urban settings. They are Physicisns, Scientists, Nurses, ect and are for the most part, the nicest people one could meet.

So 99.999% of the time, being on this site is a great reminder for me to stay the "Dr" course, of how immensly blessed I am in ALL aspects of my life and lastly, of how a Black woman with 4 degrees and working on 2 more, is under the skin of lowlifes so deep they obsesses about her EVERYDAY of their obviously miserable lives.

No, she's brighter than that.  I'd estimate 110-115, with pretty good schooling to back it up (her spelling and grammar are proof that she didn't sit in classrooms where keeping the chilluns from starting fistfights was the teacher's primary job).  This is genius-level by Black standards, which is why her self-esteem is so high.  However, she's no great shakes by White standards (maybe 70th-80th percentile), and anyone who's gotten 4 degrees without settling down and making a career out of at least one of them has been either stupid enough to waste vast amounts of their time... or was given scholarships.  I'm betting scholarships, by admissions departments eager to keep their diversity numbers up.

Whites don't get the diversity preferences.  If you see a White doing this, it's almost certain they're a trust-fund baby.

Jimmy, i understand completely why the concept of earning a degree paid for by one's employer is lost on you because you have no marketable skills an employer would want to invest in. So it's also unimaginable that you could ever earn a college degree in every decade of your life as i have too. However, most rational thinking people know that being a Scientist as I've been for almost 30 years, is a darn great career.

And that multiple degree thing is quite common among my Caribbean kinfolk.

    1. ...have more important things to do with your time.

    2. ...make better quality arguments, without the need to constantly repeat yourself.

    3. ...not need to boast about your alleged I.Q. (As a matter of interest, have you ever in your life meet a genuinely clever person who found it necessary to say "Look at me I'm so clever!. Look at me I have an I.Q. of 320"? No? Me neither... The smartest people prove they are the cleverest by being smarter and achieving things, inventing things, having great careers. What they don't do is spend their days whining like a bitch on other people's blogs, or claim intellectual superiority over others based on the melanin levels of their skin.)

Hell, I can put this on Facebook and get an answer from an undergrad in less than a half hour.
