"With white liberals like these who needs the right wing?"

TWEET MEI read a great article in Salon.com that I want to share.

The field Negro education series continues.

"Obsessed with their own masochism and insecurity, white leftists keep beating themselves up for Trump's victory

Is there any problem in America not the fault of liberal progressives? Has anyone actually ever met a liberal? What do these people do for fun? Sneer about cultural appropriation, burn American flags, and mock old women wearing crosses?

The idea that every political, social and financial crisis in the United States has a liberal origin is not only the propaganda of right-wing tantrums, but increasingly since the surreal election of Donald Trump, an obsession of liberals themselves. Myopically fixated on their own masochism and pathetic insecurity, they have wasted precious airtime, intellectual energy and freelance budgets of popular publications in attempts to explain how exactly they are to blame for 62 million Americans driving or walking to the polls to vote for a historically illiterate fool whose character actually appears in worse shape than his acumen.

Bernie Sanders, a leftist rather than a liberal, was one of the first to incoherently assign the presidential loss to the failure of “identity politics,” failing to recognize that Donald Trump is the most powerful practitioner of identity politics in the world. Mark Lilla, a Columbia University professor, acted as eloquent parrot to Sanders when he wrote that the Democrats’ fixation on diversity cost them the election. Recently, Bill Maher, whose derangement seems to advance with every television appearance, told Jack Tapper that the Democratic Party failed in 2016 because its leaders “made white people feel like a minority.”

Caitlin Flanagan, an excellent writer regardless of the inanity of her topic, blames Bill Maher for Trump’s victory, or more broadly, “late night comedy.” “When Republicans see these harsh jokes,” Flanagan explained about the humor of Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah and Samantha Bee, “they see exactly what Donald Trump has taught them: that the entire media landscape loathes them, their values, their family, and their religion.” [More here]

Read the rest of that article and tell me your thoughts.

If you want to learn a little bit more about race and politics you will be glad that you did.

“they see exactly what Donald Trump has taught them: that the entire media landscape loathes them, their values, their family, and their religion.”

Trump didn't teach us that, we lived it for decades. Trump won because he was the only politician not owned by the donor class, the only one who could afford to recognize the interests of the deplorables.

Hatred of Trump is just hatred of whites.

Anti-white cultural shaming, affirmative action and hatred against white "supremacy" won't stop when whites are a minority. It will grow.

  4. The identity the Democrats are not reaching are the service sector working class. This is why the Red/Blue map of America looks almost exactly like a traffic map of the country, with all the heavily trafficked areas Blue, and the exurbs and suburbs and rural areas all Red. The GOP Gerrymandered in such a way over the past two censuses (and get ready, the next census is being undermined by Trump and the GOP right now) to divide the country between where middle class people work and shop from where they live. Meanwhile, in a national race to the bottom, Big Box stores, and the rest of the retail and restaurant sectors developed just outside incorporated towns and cities, or made special tax deals to locate, further disconnecting them from the economies and societies in the towns where their workers live.

Walmarts seemed great 25 years ago when they started popping up in the middle of nowhere and people who had limited consumption options now could get all the cool stuff the urban and suburban people could buy. But when Walmarts started spreading into long-developed old towns ans cities (or, just outside of town, I should say), the small businesses in those towns closed, and with them went all the owners, the managers, the local active political class, the middle class, and the tax base and property values and good schools and services that came with them.

Deindustrialization rendered the chief identity of "Democrat," the Blue Collar, obsolete. Most Blue Collars are contractors now, and their politics have almost nothing to do with that identity. The unions are gone. The Labor Movement, forgotten. White Flight in the 60's, 70's and 80's, dissolved the ol' dependable Irish/Italian/Polish Catholic Democrat vote. The Catholic Schools left with them, as the new Catholic immigrants, mostly Latins and Filipinos, left behind in deindustrialized cities, could not keep them up. The Jesuit high school in Jersey City where my wife used to teach closed a decade ago, just a year after we moved down here to America's wang. Catholic Republican, a rare thing indeed a generation or two ago (unless you were Cuban), is now common. They're out there in the burbs now, commuting to places to shop and work that they would tell you in a heartbeat, irony completely ignored, where they would never live.

I could go on and on, but the main point is this - the Dems have to find a way to get the labor movement going in the service sector. That's where the interests and identities they need are, and that's who need the Democrats right now. And we have to legalize the immigrants. This is getting ridiculous. We're talking millions of people who've been here an average of like 8 years now, many, many much longer. Their kids identify as Americans - service sector working class Americans. Even if only with resident alien status at first, within a generation, we could see a major shift of power back to the majority, and a majority that is de facto inclusive of many other identities as well.

Trying to to win over these real Trump supporter types is a waste of time, completely unnecessary. Trump is President and we now live in a GOP one-party state because the system - the Senate, the gerrymandering at every level - is stacked in their favor. To work around this, the Dems need to concentrate on the 70% of the workers in this country now employed in the service sector. No amount of gerrymandering or a Senate loaded with silly "states" like Montana, can overcome that large of a majority.

  5. The question isn't why Hillary lost, but why Trump won.

He won because he delivered a smorgasbord of reasons to vote for him, something for every member of the electorate, individually and en masse.

He appealed to racists (sure, they call themselves white nationalists), the religious right who believed that liberals and progressives went overboard when it came to the LGBTQ community, to out-of-work workers, or the underemployed (especially those who worked in coal mines, or saw their jobs shipped off to China, or a third-world country), to those who believe that Muslims and "illegals" are the source of this country's downfall, which a wall and a Muslim ban would remedy, to those who hate socialism (with the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare taking the lead), who hate (or was taught to hate) "Crooked Hillary," Black Lives Matter, the biased liberal media, and on and on.

He even attempted to give blacks a reason to vote for him, "What do you have to lose?" he intoned.

  6. Oh, my stars and garters! Those poor, poor, little Pig-People, however can they manage after such ill-mannered treatment by comedians?

If they bothered to listen to what the comedians and us liberals have been trying to tell them for, oh I don't know, let's call it thirty years, they might not be facing down the loss of their health insurance, and for many of them in rural areas, the largest employers paying more than minimum wage they have: hospitals and other health care facilities.

Comity and civility are valuable tools in civic life and especially communication, and that might have been something to consider before adopting the list of words Gopac handed out to characterize liberals and Democrats whenever a microphone, camera, or reporter presented itself. After twenty years of lies and slander from the awful, awful bastards whose stated purpose is the dismantling of the government, I have no fucks left to give about the feelings of people too stupid to keep from killing themselves by electing Republicans.

As for the "liberals" turning on each other and throwing blame around, some of that is just the human decency that is entirely lacking in the Pig-People. The idea that you could be wrong about some things and a tendency to re-examine the underpinnings of your arguments are healthy responses to issues of life and death.
Then there is the reflexive checking of one's projected identity in the face of the above mentioned public slander that all too many liberals fall into. The mental question of is it worth it to express a liberal viewpoint in the face of a likely wave of ignorance and hostility that might damage relations with people you need to be in good standing with. That is a major driver of the writing voice I use in this comment section: I see the need for non-cowering liberal voices in appropriate places, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our host for providing just such a venue.

If you lead with your values, you'll probably do OK, even if there is a subset of people who will never hear a word you say, it, and, and the included. They cannot be reached. They have spent a lot of effort making that abundantly clear, and it would be the height of folly to spend any valuable resource trying to prove them wrong.
Never try to teach a Pig-Person to think, it wastes your time and annoys the Pig-Person.

I guess it is identity politics because people of color, gays, Muslims ect want representation and a voice too. As far as jobs maybe some people may have to move to where the jobs are. The jobs ain't coming back to Mayberry. We need to spend more on STEM education. May have to relocate from WV to Silicon Valley. The vocational jobs Trump is touting is a path to nowhere. C'mon folks, let's rise.

I think Mr.David Masciotra's article is right on point. It articulates very accurately a lot of the reasons for Mr. Trumps victory.

Furthermore my belief is that if the liberal progressives continue with that elitist, blind to the reality of millions,as well as the insulting rhetoric, they will be dead in the water as they say, for a long time to come.

Mr. Trump is our president, for good or for bad, he now represents the country we live in, and love,(otherwise why are we still here? :) and my thoughts are that he should be respected as such.

Which is not to say that we aren't going to analyze and criticize, whatever policies he puts in place that affect us negatively, of course because that is the democratic way, and also to offer better alternative solutions.

And with that I'll now step off the soapbox ;D

The Saharan Dust has finally lifted/moved on! I spent the entire week with the house closed up, stuck in my room most of the day, with air purifier running, meds and nebulizer therapy, and double mask to go to the kitchen.Just the internet and YouTube to keep myself occupied.

  13. "failing to recognize that Donald Trump is the most powerful practitioner of identity politics in the world"

Conservatives preached universal values, color-blindness, individual merit; a creedal nation bound by acceptance of the American proposition rather than by blood. They endorsed a limited government society bound by a common culture and values system.

Liberals preached identity politics where government was a spoils system to extract resource from the whole to your particular group. Their idea was a multi-cultural society made up of diverse populations with conflicting value systems and different cultural traditions. The power of the people was to be apportioned to groups.

Liberals won, and identity politics is now how the game is played. As more conservatives realize their movement is dead, whites will increasingly vote as a block, as all other racial groups already do.

Trump is just the start; he only got 57% of the white vote.

In a culturally homogeneous society, political difference aren't that great, and the parties cannot stray too far left or right from the central mean. As the country grows more "diverse", the distance from the mean will diverge farther and farther as groups coalesce around new ideological centers. We see that already, when Presidential elections are so traumatic to the losing side, where the outcome seems almost like a do or die situation.

This is a natural result of the demographic change the government has been engineering for the last 50 year. It is intentional, the idea being to break the people by creating so many divisions that it will be impossible to mount any serious opposition to the elite's globalist agenda.

The only question is does this project proceed to its goal, or does the country tear itself apart in the next 20 years?

What alien planet does this stuff come from? That statement is the exact opposite of reality. It is the elitist right wing nut jobs and their sole devotion to the wealthy that has created the situation we are in now.

I cannot believe people would dare imagine anything different. Wingnuts laid the rails to send jobs overseas. They reward korporations for cutting labor costs and then allow them to keep profits-offshore and tax free. Wingnuts fight minimum wage raises tooth and nail and have recently passed legislation in red states to prevent cities from setting their own minimum wages.

HRC had a 30 billion dollar plan to help alleviate unemployment in Appalachia as well as help to retrain workers in green energy tech-in top of the help Obama sent them. Wingnuts want to take away healthcare, job training monies, food stamps and all other safety net programs so they can give more to the wealthy.

Really hard to take seriously fucking morons that fall for anything a wingnut promises. They get their butts burnt every god damned time and then they believe wingnuts who claim it is tax and spend Dems that are the problem. People that consistently vote in favor of the rich deserve what they get and they get no sympathy from me. Fuck every last one of them and the fucking nutjobs that continually lie to them.

  18. Trump pulled on the secret backstory of the oppression of poor white people who were essentially re-located to the US by the British to empty their society of poor people. Indentured servitude for an opportunity to be (eventually) free and landed in the New World is the classic promise rarely recounted by American history as taught in school, but more often than not, according to Isenberg's telling and this was a forced servitude co-erced by threats of prison for petty, trumped up crimes, and even after the fact of being rounded up and put on a ship sailing for New World soil. My family has such an ancestor and his hard scrabble roots are upheld as having yielded commendable values, but he was lucky and was able to acquire title to land (beautiful, steep, rocky and "difficult", but his) in Vermont for service in the war of the American Revolution.
However, more often, folks arriving here for years and years due to the documented practices of settling both the North AND THE SOUTH with the hundreds and hundreds of boatloads of poor folks, mostly whites, rounded up off the streets in urban Britain, were not so lucky. Further, there were fancy implications for the South that the formation of an elite almost royalty yielded by the economic boon of slavery needed to be and could be mitigated and a middle class established, but no provisions were ever made to seriously train or support the "recruits", who were frequently sick on arrival, uneducated, unskilled and chaffing against the cruelty of their "contractors". Said contractors meanwhile regarded them as rude and offensive trash, felt fully free to cheat and abuse them. So much for follow through. Meanwhile and in turn, the "bonded" evidently felt free, post 1783, to head out to the unsettled areas of great plantations and to scrabble out a hard survival in the backwoods. They became known as "squatters" and "crackers" for their in-your-face bowel relief habits and fondness for "cracking wind", again per Isencraft. Such habits were reviled by wealthy landowners, but they ultimately, as years passed and the Civil War re-sected the nation, had to respect a certain vigor growing out of these settlers when(hail Davy Crockett), they elected their own backwoods candidate for President, Andrew Jackson.
While the first Trump of the President's lineage arrived at the age of 16 and may have worked off some kind of bondage, the "frontiers" were now edging the Pacific, and the first Trump evidently made quick work of it and went on to make a fortune in real estate and property management in Seattle, the classic American Dream story come true. It resonates enough to attract many in the South and MidWest whose own ancestry is far more challenged and still yearning to catch a break to move from rags to riches.
Trump is not the next Nixon, he's the next Andrew Jackson. Boorish and possibly even mentally unstable, these are traits have been attributed to poor white trash since the ghastly conditions of Jamestown's first settlement followed by the Massachusetts colonies.
If we are to motivate unions in the service sector and/or get the closed boxes of identity politics opened for communication, we'll probably need to start teaching the real history of class segregation. The problem will be holding the "blue bloods" accountable, getting a meaningful dialogue started, etc. We barely have scratched the surface of getting white people to open up about racism, yet it seems to me recognizing identity abuse as a common theme for many white folks may be helpful and healing.

  25. FWIW, I responded to Flanagan's essay on the Atlantic website:

Yet another analysis pinning blame for Trump's upset anywhere but on the multiple places it really belongs. Comedians and satirists do what they do, sometimes at the expense of the duped. Maybe that Sunday-school attendee, after he'd got his feelings hurt and felt betrayed, might wake up, begin to question why he should support a candidate who thinks II Corinthians is a movie sequel and the Ten Commandments are fine as long as you don't take them too seriously. The stunner for me in this election was that so many adults, who have presumably left their houses once in a while, couldn't recognize a grifter and a fake when they saw one, or were so dishonest with themselves that they wouldn't admit it. Class and education have nothing to do with it: everyone has met a hustler and, sooner or later, has learned to see through him—the species is common as dirt, unfortunately, as are the telltale signs.
For the rest, our flawed Electoral College system, voter suppression, gerrymandering, Trump's "normalization" fomented by most of the press, reduce the part played by late-night comedians to a footnote. Though I enjoyed this article for provoking thought, always a plus.

First, I don't know what those supposed liberals do for a good time, but the crowd I ran with for 25 years tended to like drugs, sex, rock and roll, motorcycles, Mexican food, art, comedy, literature, firearms, and cats. I have calmed down from some of that since my stroke, but I was always more invested in the music anyway, and that still tends to prop me up mentally when everything else gets too crazy.

And second, when speaking of who has contempt for whom in America just now, nobody has more contempt for anyone than president four-year-old has for the Pig-People who elected him:

For national elections, whites never voted as a bloc.

In the south, whites are bare majorities and have increasingly voted as a bloc.

As the white share of the population decreases in other regions, they will increasingly vote as a bloc too.

This will cause the counter-intuitive result where shrinking white population means increasing white political power.

And since the modern Democratic Party primary unifying factor is hatred of whites, white voters have only one place to go. The decline of the Democrats as a national party will continue for the foreseeable future.

You are insane if you believe that. There aren't even 60 million Pig-People, much less 60 million Nazis. If you are referring to my civil war comments, there were roughly half that many people total in the country then, so had the south been burned flat and the ground salted, you still wouldn't have gotten to a quarter of that.

It's depressing thinking how violence against whites by nonwhites in USA has not only been normalized, but now somehow expected.
    -------------
What's depressing is assholes like you who obsess over negro on white crime and ignore the fact you are many times more likely to be the victim of your own kind.

Sorry, FN, but I find that your "let them rave on, that men may know them mad" strategy turns your comment threads into a slum.

    I feel ya.

His public service towards white racists, allowing them to get off here, at the expense of his black commenters, is repugnant and intolerable.

If it weren't for the white "racists", this comment board would be a circle jerk of anti-white racism and whining punctuated by Yisheng's gibbering genocidal awfulness.

You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall -- you need me on that wall.

I would rather that you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand the post. Either way, I don't give a DAMN what you think you're entitled to!

Why are you lamenting the passing of a White man on a White-hating blog?

"had the south been burned flat and the ground salted, you still wouldn't have gotten to a quarter of that."

And Black people would have created brand-new "racists" wherever they went, just as they do now.

"ignore the fact you are many times more likely to be the victim of your own kind. "

We don't ignore it.  We put the perps in jail to avoid crime.  We also avoid crime by segregating.  If were were truly "integrated" with Blacks we would be FAR more likely to be victims of Black than White crime, because the 6:1 population differential is swamped by the 15, 25, 50:1 CRIME differential.

@field...This is a commercial free blog.

You take great pride in labeling your blog free of commercials, but, when it comes to white racists, and bigots, your tolerance knows no bounds, as you vehemently oppose making your blog racist-free, even as your inaction has resulted in black commenters fleeing your blog.

Let's face it: Black commenters are boring.

Good thing we have whites like Doug in Oakland, mike from iowa, and Brigade Fifteen to speak for us.

None. I have the America I want, right here in Oakland. Pig-People deserve to be represented in government just like I do. That doesn't mean they're not Pig-People, though. Nobody is holding a gun to their heads and making them watch Fox and listen to Rush and read Breitbart and suicidally vote for Republicans who hold them in contempt.
Nazis, though, seem kind of hard to defend, but go right ahead, that's what freedom of speech is all about. We did shoot them a lot at one point, though. They really sucked back then, and haven't gotten much better since.

    There you go.

Please refrain from calling for the murder of people you define as Nazis. That's kind of what the worst part of Nazism was. There's way too much of that going around these days.

  66. Fuck you, I'll say whatever the fuck I want. When your stupid, stupid, ideology has you defending Nazis, for fuck's sake, why should anyone take advice from you? Especially when it's only bullshit trolling and everyone knows it.
How about you stop calling for the murder of 45,000 poor people every year first?
Or never mind. You don''t, won't, and can't understand, so just go back to sucking on your hate speech media and telling yourself how right you are until you fall asleep.

FN, I actually agree on this article. The rabid liberal left(so called progressives) tried to ram their bullshit down Americas throat and it backfired big time!!

  74. Anymoose said something incoherent, as per usual. Dems did not control congress long enough to ram anything down anyone's throats.

If you maroons from the wrong side of the flat earth bothered to check opinion polls you will see the majority of voters agree with Liberal social programs-including gay marriage and abortion rights.

Voters agree with increased minimum wages, funding Planned Parenthood, higher taxes on the wealthiest and more voters right now prefer Dems to lying asshole wingnut pols.

  78. No, you fucking idiot, I'm talking about self-defined Nazis. That's what I said. Perhaps you're too fucked-in-the-head to understand any English that doesn't come out of the orifice of a Fox, Rush, or Breitbart moron, but get this: Words still have meanings, and if you can't cope with those meanings when they fail to support your awful, awful, ideology, the one that has you defending Nazis for fuck's sake, then you have lost your ability to communicate.

I suggest you bugger yourself to death with a sheep, but since you can't understand words, I feel safe in my assumption that my suggestion won't precipitate your untimely death.

Not so much when they are overused. When everyone to the right of Bernie is a "Nazi" and every white person without a BLM sign in their yard is a "racist", then getting called either is no big deal.

Sputtering, nonsensical outrage can only work for so long. Progressivism is intellectually and morally bankrupt. When you can't tell the difference between Donald Trump and Hitler, you have nothing to say that anyone needs to hear.

  80. Then why are Dems 0-3 in 2017 special elections so far?

Pretty obvious ain't it. Wingnuts cheat, suppress votes and take victory laps when they actually barely win in embarrassingly red states. Wingnuts haven't won a free and fair election since Eisenhower did back in the 50's.

And they constantly whine about voter fraud even when they are the ones doing the fraud. Then they pass laws in red states to make it harder for anyone but the imcumbents to win and then they whine about voter fraud some more so they can pass more draconian voting regs keeping more legal Dems from voting.

    ReplyDelete
  81. No, dear. You see, some of us who don't regularly consume propaganda still have the facility to determine what we're looking at. I can easily tell the difference between, say, a racist alt-right moron, a sovereign citizen militia nutjob, a garden variety Pig-Person who just likes Rush a lot, and a fucking Nazi. They'll tell you, usually even if you don't ask.
My grandfather emigrated from Germany not long before the Nazis did to Germany what you are trying to do to the US.
I'm not laboring under the enforced uncertainty of needing to support some of the reprehensible perpetrators and not others, so perhaps that makes it easier for me.
But that facility sort of comes with the responsibility of citizenship one is obliged to accept upon reaching the age of majority.

  84. "In a democracy where citizens are free to vote for their preferred candidate without coercion" is a ridiculous statement. The primaries are under the control of theocratic supply-siders of the right, and neo-liberal "Live Centrist or die" double-talkers on the Left. Human beings rarely get a chance to run; they are simply too dangerous to the monetary interests.

Sure, the progressive elitists can be masochists, but the author doesn't seem to really understand this phenomenon--leftist masochism in this country is a product of despair: If it is all my fault, then there is hope if I change myself. Who the hell can change conservatives who believe in laissez-faire capitalism, the most unconservative force in human history? They seem beyond therapy. Political masochism is narcisistic, but in a world where intelligent machines may take the meritocracy to spirit-crushing heights, I understand, even if I dont ultimately think its productive...
