Open thread Wednesday.

MORE DISCLAIMERS It's open thread Wednesday field hands, and there has been a lot to ruminate about of late.

For instance, the secretary of state allegedly called his president a "moron" .  Is he out of line?

Do you believe that if the murderer who slaughtered those people in Vegas was a person of color we would have been trying so hard to figure out his motivation for doing it?

A pro-life politician tells his mistress to get an abortion. Are any of us surprised? I know that I'm not.

Finally, your president was throwing paper towels to hurricane victims in Puerto Rico. Tell me what you thought of the optics of it when you saw it.

  1. Tillerson is an interesting character. Initially I think we all balked at the post of SOS being handed to the chief exec of Exxon. But he has taken his role quite seriously and indeed managed to mitigate some of the verbal abuses of Trump's tweets from time to time. Thank the goddess he has worked behind the scenes with North Korea. His friend, General Mattis is trying to protect the Iran nuclear deal. It was really quite something to here Bob Corker praise these two as well as General Kelly. Bob was the lone republican senator who dared to speak against the outrageous Charlottesville comments. Tillerson appears to be a gentleman. For him to call the monster a f****** moron, he must have felt quite strongly.

We have all heard the liberal pearl clutching over Trump's boorish, self-serving behavior in Puerto Rico. This makes it easy for the right-wingers to counter that this is yet another example of Trump's rough way of handling people. It's just Trump being...

I'm going to set out in a different direction. That's right, trolls, I'm playing the race card. Trump's family and circle of friends in New York didn't place Puerto Ricans in any higher regard than they did the local black population. I think we all know what he did to black renters and how he felt about his black employees. There has clearly been a palpable hatred and fear of Puerto Ricans amongst portions of the populace of New York, going back to the 1950s. The racist epithet I heard as a youth for Puerto Ricans here in Reagan is probably the most vile insult on a people I have ever heard.

Damn right it was a nuisance to him to have to deal with a hurricane for these pathetic island people losers. He wanted everyone to know that they were deeply in debt and that the money they needed just to get started on rebuilding cities, homes and infrastructure amounts to even more than the amount that they owe. He pointed out that the debt must be dealt with. He blamed the island saying, "I hate to say this Puerto Rico, but you've thrown our budget out of whack." Completely heartless and condescending. But it's still all partying all the time as he mugs with rolls of paper towels shooting them like basketballs, handing out sacks of rice to the destitute. The people manage to hang on to their dignity without causing a scene before the TV cameras.

    - The optics of Trump's photo-op in Puerto Rico - nah, I've seen enough of Trump over the past 40+ years. He hasn't changed - he still says one thing out one face to his favored people, then flips to the other face and says the opposite to everyone else, because he *still* believes his un-favored people are too stupid to see the game he's still playing.
    - It cracks me up when someone claims that there is no "credible" evidence of Trump's words and behavior throughout the 70+ years of his life. There is plenty of credible evidence; there are merely some people who refuse to see Trump's shenanigans as negative, because he does what his minion-wannabes wish they could get away with doing.
    -
    - As for the nonsensical claim that "most mass murders are Blacks", well, hey, it's the Internet, where anyone can claim anything, and there will be someone who believes it, no matter how much data and hard evidence proves it to be wrong.
    - I've dealt with people who were experiencing hallucinations, and they end up doing all sorts of mental gymnastics to "prove" that those who deny the veracity of those hallucinations are themselves the victims of this or that conspiracy of bogeymen.

    - BTW, Puerto Rico's severe debt began the same year (2006 IIRC) that Congress allowed corporate subsidiaries located there to send unrestricted amounts of money back to the US headquarters without paying ANY US income tax. So the corporations have been milking Puerto Rico dry.
    - But hey, it's all they're good for, in the Rumpiverse.

  12. When will the day come when some will stop defending this scared ass white boy with all these excuses. One day you will find out that this behavior is not okay. He picks his people to disdain in person. This guy surrounds himself with his white cabinet and visits places that are prearranged to not have people of color in the pictures. Think of the odds and probability of having all light white looking people of the Island and no dark Puerto Rico people. He has been in office 9 months plus and you will be hard press to find any photos of him with people of color. I am not talking about "my Blacks".

I was an advocate of Obama being more active in placing the people he had a chance to be in charge. Well that is long gone. By the way Trump did take some photos with little Black children. Same as the police taken pics giving them toy etc.....until they grow old enough to be capped......12.

But I still like Donald. He entertains me. This would be a boring country without him. Even this gun violence is no noteworthy. Tell me the truth, everybody that is waiting for the next one...... raise your hands. Please don't be mad at me. I am the guy that has live through one year in hell.. with rockets, ak47, USA bonds from our planes and artillary...... some things that scared ass boy got his pappy to get him out. - As I've noted previously, I've seen and heard quite enough of Donald's shenanigans during the past 40+ years, so I'm way past finding him "entertaining". He hasn't changed, except for becoming even more arrogant with age. I also don't agree that the country would be boring without him; we're kooky and entertaining enough as a nation without descending into total insanity =:-o
    - Insanity is what lies behind these mass killings. Rather than increasing access to, and assistance for, help with mental health problems, sociopathic fearmongers have instead been picking at vulnerable people's psychological scabs for decades, and we are seeing the evil fruits of those bad actions.

    Field Negro said...
"For instance, the secretary of state allegedly called his president a "moron". Is he out of line?"

    - Yes and no. As the former CEO of Exxon, Tillerson is certainly in a position to be aware of the facts regarding Donald's decades-long claims of being a financial genius, and as Sec.ty of State, he's been in a position to directly observe Donald's other areas of claimed "expertise". So, no, he is not out of line in the sense of making a baseless claim.
    - In terms of the usual etiquette of Things Political, he is "out of line", but then, on the other hand, Donald himself has shredded the usual etiquette of Things Political, so in that sort of a climate, it's difficult to say Tillerson was "out of line", because it seems that the traditional lines have been so twisted and tossed that it's difficult to say they even exist any more.

  18. Hey Bernardo,

How's this for remotely credible? Or don't you trolls believe that the NYT is a credible source? This article from August of 2016 'No Vacancies' for Blacks: How Donald Trump Got His Start, and Was First Accused of Bias.

It was Fred Trump who is famously seen denying the 33-year old nurse, Maxine Brown an apartment in Queens. There was nothing wrong with her application. Only problem was that she was black. Other potential black renters were simply told that there were no vacancies when that was clearly not the case. Donald was still just seventeen years old.

As for the stories of the casinos hiding or telling their black employees to step out back whenever Trump visited, that is purely anecdotal. Maybe they were not true. Who knows?

    ReplyDelete
  19. The upshot of the article was that there was a lawsuit filed by the federal government in 1973, the People of the United States vs. Trump Management Inc., charging the corporation with violation of the Fair Housing Act.

Donald Trump was then twenty-seven years old.

But yeah, I get it. "The blacks love me. Believe me."

    ReplyDelete
  20. So Bernardo,

The settlement turned out to be quite interesting. Under an agreement reached in June of 1975, Trump Management was required to furnish the New York Urban League with a list of all apartment vacancies every week for two years. It was for the league to present qualified applicants for every fifth vacancy in Trump buildings where fewer than 10% of the tenants were black.

Trump claimed the victory because no admission of wrongdoing was required. It was actually a small victory for civil rights.

But you missed my entire point bro. The discrimination and hatred of Trump towards black people is well-known. It's the kind of thing that both Perry Mason and Hamilton Burger would agree to stipulate. My point was that Trump was treating the people of Puerto Rico as something less than the people of Florida or Texas.

Early in the year it was reported that Rex Tillerson wanted Elliot Abrams to be the Deputy Secretary of State, and Trump overruled him. If that was true, Tillerson is the moron and he should have been fired immediately. Abrams Contra friends raped nuns. Why isn't the neocon war criminal, Zionist PNAC member, Elliot Abrams in prison? ...Oh, that's right. George H. W. Bush pardoned him.

After the possibilities of John Bolton or Rudy Giuliani being Secretary of State lowered expectations, Tillerson looked pretty good. For that matter, we had also made it past the possibility of Hillary appointing a liar Democrat neocon like torture advocate Leon Panetta. Other than allegedly considering Elliot Abrams for Deputy Secretary of State I don't have any complaints about Tillerson. He seems to be doing a good job as far as I know. If he justfiably called Trump a moron, that's good, much better than being a yes man.

Pro life politicians telling their mistresses to get abortions is nothing surprising.
Most politicians are hypocrites, liars and phonies that pander to their bases in order to keep their life time
high paying government jobs and great medical insurance that are paid for by "us" (the American citizens).

Re: The POTUS Throwing Things At Puerto Ricans & Saying Insulting Remarks To Them

The POTUS throwing things at Puerto Ricans is also no surprise and NO ACCIDENT.
This is what racists do all the time to show people of color and their base that they enjoy being racist.

The POTUS has NEVER had and regard for any people of color (black, brown, or beige) as he sees all people of color as "less than" and "lower than."

The optics reminded one of someone jokingly throwing scraps of food to hungry animals. NO RESPECT.

Then to add "insult to injury" the POTUS further reminded Puerto Ricans that he has no regard for them or the hurricane disaster by telling them that assistance to Puerto Rico is a drain on the budget.

"...Jonathan Smith recounted the aftermath of the horrific attack in which 58 people lost their lives in the mass shooting.

It was his heroism that prevented the death toll from rising even further -- Smith is credited with saving at least 30 people from the scene, although he downplays his actions.

In the process of saving those lives, Smith took at least two bullets, one in the arm and another in his neck.

He was dragged to safety by off-duty police officer Tom McGrath, who had to put his own fingers in Smith's bullet wound to stanch the bleeding."

Since it is Open thread Wednesday, I wanted to call attention to the acts of heroism of the two men above.

Some other Americans at that concert made the ultimate sacrifice while saving strangers. We have our problems in this country because we are flawed human beings, but citizens do care about each other. Just ask the people who stood in line 8 hours to give blood in the aftermath of Las Vegas.

  30. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens edifying.
Stevens entire explanation should be read for a full understanding of the history of the Second Amendment and Supreme Court cases interpreting it, but a couple of paragraphs are illuminating.

For more than 200 years following the adoption of that amendment, federal judges uniformly understood that the right protected by that text was limited in two ways: First, it applied only to keeping and bearing arms for military purposes, and second, while it limited the power of the federal government, it did not impose any limit whatsoever on the power of states or local governments to regulate the ownership or use of firearms. Thus, in United States v. Miller, decided in 1939, the court unanimously held that Congress could prohibit the possession of a sawed-off shotgun because that sort of weapon had no reasonable relation to the preservation or efficiency of a “well regulated Militia.”…During the years when Warren Burger was chief justice, from 1969 to 1986, no judge or justice expressed any doubt about the limited coverage of the amendment, and I cannot recall any judge suggesting that the amendment might place any limit on state authority to do anything….

Thus, Congress’s failure to enact laws that would expand the use of background checks and limit the availability of automatic weapons cannot be justified by reference to the Second Amendment or to anything that the Supreme Court has said about that amendment. What the members of the five-justice majority said in those opinions is nevertheless profoundly important, because it curtails the government’s power to regulate the use of handguns that contribute to the roughly 88 firearm-related deaths that occur every day.

    - People bring their Selves to everything, including politics and religion. People who are fundamentally decent will use both as ways to spread decency. Those who, on the other hand, are fundamentally contemptuous of decency will use both to try to spread that contempt.

"U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller has a distinctly modern problem. The president, judging by his tweets, could try to pardon people in his circle even before prosecutors charge anyone with a crime.

Mueller’s all-star team of prosecutors, with expertise in money laundering and foreign bribery, has an answer to that. He’s Michael Dreeben, a bookish career government lawyer with more than 100 Supreme Court appearances under his belt.

Acting as Mueller’s top legal counsel, Dreeben has been researching past pardons and determining what, if any, limits exist, according to a person familiar with the matter. Dreeben’s broader brief is to make sure the special counsel’s prosecutorial moves are legally airtight. That could include anything from strategizing on novel interpretations of criminal law to making sure the recent search warrant on ex-campaign adviser Paul Manafort’s home would stand up to an appeal.

“He’s seen every criminal case of any consequence in the last 20 years,” said Kathryn Ruemmler of Latham & Watkins LLP, who served as White House counsel under President Barack Obama. “If you wanted to do a no-knock warrant, he’d be a great guy to consult with to determine if you were exposing yourself.”"

Bad news fer yoy- Vegas shooter has zero ties to antifa regardless of what fucknuts Alex Jones sez at inf-whores.

Good news- the economy shed 33 000 jobs after hurricanes, but Drumpf can blame Obams for that because the hurricanes were named when Obama was our last legally elected Potus.

"Not even the mainstream/sell out media will call him what he REALLY is, which is absolutely deplorable!"

    - Since over 95% of media outlets were owned, by 2012 if I recall correctly, by a grand total of SIX multinational corporations, no, of course they won't/can't say much against the Corporatist-in-Chief.
    - So much for all the knee-jerk shrieking about the supposed "left-wing media". Even that shrieking is orchestrated, with the eventual goal being to smother dissent while still maintaining the pretense of a free press.
