*People wonder why we totally support NFL players (and US soccer players) kneeling during the singing of the anthem.

Honestly, this type of thing is happening every day * all over America, and we are fortunate to get a glimpse of the way that some of these officers are behaving thanks to citizens with cell phone cameras.
Here is another one. [Video] This young man might be dead today if it weren't for the woman who was filming the entire episode pleading with the police.
Folks in the majority population do not understand this, because unlike people of color, they are viewed as human beings by those in law enforcement. They can kill multiple people in a church and be calmly taken into custody. That's just the way things are here in America.
"In her video, Holsey tells the officers that she is streaming the incident live. She told CBS News she felt it was her duty to do so. "I feel like we have nobody to stand up for us. So, in that moment, I had to stand up for him, for myself. I wouldn't have been able to live with myself if I didn't intervene in some way."
As more squad cars converged on the scene, Holsey asks the officers, "Is all that necessary?" She said by the end of the arrest, she saw at least seven cop cars arrive.
Holsey became upset and through tears pleaded with the officers: "I don't understand why you all have guns drawn on him right now. Are you going to kill him?"'
They just might have killed him Ms. Holsey. Thank goodness you were there to film it all.

ReplyDeleteYeah, I have taken shit from some of my outlaw friends for talking to cops who came to my house, as they see any interaction with law enforcement to be s gain for them, and being outlaws, they see that as bad.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it's better to talk to them, but you need to know what you're doing.
I grew up knowing several criminal defense attorneys, as my mom worked for them for decades, so I have never been under any illusions of overriding justice.
My friend Jack, who did 23 months in Soledad North at 21 for selling a half ounce of leafers to an undercover cop, has been known to interject himself into interactions between his friends and the cops because "I've probably talked to more cops than you have people" has a few guidelines for safe interactions with law enforcement, but readily acknowledges how being white allows him more leeway to avoid arrest and ass kicking.
1) Never say no to anything they tell you. If you have to disagree, say something like "OK, but..." before stating your case.
2) Tell them your story in as few words as possible and don't add more details unless you just have to. The more you talk, the worse it can get.
3) Don't try to show them anything unless they ask you to, or if you feel like you have to, tell them exactly what you're going to do first, then do only that. Otherwise you are only providing them with the "inconsistencies" they will use as the rationale for arresting you.
4) Don't get casual and talkative. Remember what your Miranda rights actually say: "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law." That's CAN and WILL. In other words, run your mouth and we WILL fuck you for it.
There were more of them, but really, since I've gone a number of years without breaking the laws I used to be on guard against prosecution for, I don't remember them as well as I used to.
And that, my friends, is an example of white privilege.
