Here are a few excerpts from some popular publications regarding the trump administration's handling of the corona virus outbreak in America.
"Larry Kudlow, Trump's top economic adviser, went on CNBC this morning to finally put to rest concerns that the Trump administration is more worried about how the economy might affect Donald Trump's reelection than about the coronavirus epidemic. Kudlow, who insisted two weeks ago the outbreak was "contained," repeated that claim today, although in between the two TV appearances, 14 Americans have died and the number of states with confirmed cases has increased to 22. Not to worry, said Kudlow: the economy is strong overall, and this little dip in the market is a fine time for smart investors to buy! What's really important, said Kudlow, is that "America should stay at work," as long as America doesn't yet have a fever and chills or a productive cough. " ~Wonkette~
"The Trump Administration’s strategy to combat COVID-19, the novel coronavirus, began with a relatively simple focus: keep it out of the United States. In service of that goal, the White House issued drastic travel restrictions, imposed mandatory quarantines, and repeatedly told the public that these steps were working.
“We have contained this. I won’t say airtight but pretty close to airtight,” White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said in a television interview on Feb. 25, echoing Trump’s tweeted declaration that the virus was “very much under control” in the United States. But it wasn’t, and the administration’s rosy messaging was fundamentally at odds with a growing cacophony of alarm bells inside and outside the U.S. government. Since January, epidemiologists, former U.S. public health officials and experts have been warning, publicly and privately, that the administration’s insistence that containment was—and should remain—the primary way to confront an emerging infectious disease was a grave mistake." ~Time Magazine~
"In a life filled with uncertainty, there are a few things we can always count on. One, that death spares no one. Two, that Jared and Ivanka will find a way to profit off of their government positions while maintaining they “sacrificed” everything to join the administration. And three, that when backed into a corner thanks to his own incompetence, greed, or history of undiagnosed traumatic brain injuries, Donald Trump will find a way to pin the blame on Barack Obama, even if the issue is, like, the DVR not recording Hannity or orange streaks on the White House bath towels because he was too impatient to let the self-tanner dry. (Previous, real-life examples have included blaming Obama for: the temperature in the Oval Office; his decision to rehire Mike Flynn, who Obama fired and warned him about; anti-Trump protests; and building a non-existent wall.)
Not surprisingly, today Trump managed to finger the 44th president of the United States for...the botched coronavirus response. Speaking to reporters alongside Mike “Jesus will sort this out” Pence one week after his big press conference on the matter, Trump claimed that the insane lack of testing of Americans presenting symptoms of the deadly disease is actually the fault of a guy who left office more than three years ago. “The Obama administration made a decision on testing that turned out to be very detrimental to what we’re doing, and we undid that decision a few days ago so that the testing can take place at a much more accurate and rapid fashion,” Trump said, before giving himself kudos for supposedly righting the supposed wrong. “That was a decision we disagreed with. I don’t think we would have made it, but for some reason it was made. But we’ve undone that decision.” ~ Vanity Fair~
"Even as China was announcing that its deaths from the novel coronavirus had surpassed its toll from SARS, President Donald Trump released a proposed budget for 2021 that slashed funding for our chief defender against epidemics by 18 percent.
Within the overall proposed cuts detailed on Feb. 10 for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was a reduction in spending to guard against “emerging and zoonotic diseases” from $635,772,000 to $550,464,000.
Zoonotic diseases are those that have crossed from animals to humans, as the novel coronavirus is believed to have done. The $85,308,000 proposed budget cut is less than the cost of 5 miles of border wall." ~The Daily Beast~
I could go on, but I think you get the point.
Trump's buffoonery and incompetence might have been funny to some of us, and good for cable talk show ratings. It's not funny anymore, and we all knew that the day would come when the most incompetent administration in the history of this country would face a real crisis.
Now, not surprisingly, they have made a mess of the handling of this corona virus epidemic, and they are trying to lie and spin their way out of it. The thing about science is this, though, facts matter. And all the spinning in the world and FOX NEWS propaganda feeds won't change what is happening in real time: People are getting sick, people are dying, and people are scared.
Of course it all doesn't matter to trump. Getting reelected and making his friends and family richer is all that matters. And if it means lying and spinning his way through a crisis, then so be it.

Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahzaha!
Uh, yeah. It's a real contest as to which will do more harm to America: Trump's malice, or Trump's incompetence. It should go without saying after watching him bumble along for 3 years -- and should have been completely obvious long before he was ever elected -- but a Very Stable Genius, he ain't. He's an utter boob, who's made his way in life through a giant inheritance and con artistry, not business acumen.
ReplyDeleteAnd the people who work for him are likewise a few fries short of a Happy Meal, because what reputable person would genuinely want to work for such a lowlife as Trump? So, naturally, the only people who have are the dregs of the right-wing end of our political culture. They're hatemongers, grifters, and dunderheads, people that had previously been rightfully mocked and laughed at, but now inspire a sense of abject horror, after having been handed actual power.
I'll just post this again. Wilbur Ross, Trump's esteemed trade "expert" on Covid-19:
"The fact is, it does give business yet another thing to consider when they go through their review of their supply chain... So I think it will help to accelerate the return of jobs to North America."
Hooray, a global disease epidemic! MAGA!
As for Trump's lame deflection of blame toward Obama, this lie is even more self-debunking than usual. Our government refused to use WHO-provided Covid-19 testing kits (ew, foreign!), instead deciding to make our own. Which then turned out not to work, and had to be recalled, leaving our public health staff without the tools they need to do their jobs.
So Obama is supposed to be responsible for preventing us from acquiring Covid-19 testing kits ... back three years ago, when Covid-19 didn't exist? Please. Only the slack-jawed yokel Trump fans are stupid enough not to see the logic hole here.

ReplyDeleteBy now, a pandemic is more likely than not. Trump-regime mismanagement favors it. I'd be enraged at his idiotic advice and his team's incompetence, but instead I already feel the Great Grief approaching.
ReplyDeleteLatest report of mortality rate: 3%. Let's lowball the infection rate for a pandemic at 40% infected. 0.40 * 0.03 = 0.012 mortality rate for entire population.
0.012 * 320 million Americans = 3,840,000 dead here.
0.012 * 7 billion humans = 84,000,000 dead globally.
That's a lot of dead people; and a lot of bereaved. At 1.2% total mortality, you are not likely to die, but you are likely to know someone who will. Take it from me: when someone close to you dies, part of you does too. You change, you go through a gate.
In 18 months we may have a vaccine, but by then we'll have those megadeaths, and the entire human race will pass through that gate. Synchronized bereavement; the Great Grief.
I can feel it approaching.

ReplyDeletedrumpfuck the dumbfuck said there were 21 cases of c-virus on a cruise ship and he didn't want them brought ashore to double the number of cases here already. The number of known cases is 240, so drumpfuck the naturally smart scientist sucks at math.
In great news out of Israel, Gantz and others got a coalition together and passed a law that prevents Nothingyahoo from ever forming a government. Bibi is toast. No longer gonna have a chance to continue his criminal enterprise.
Honestly, Paradoctor, those death numbers sound unrealistically high.
ReplyDeleteFor starters, a 40% global infection rate sounds unrealistically high, not at all a lowball. The infection rate for the catastrophic 1918 Spanish flu was probably around 25%, maybe, with no containment measures in place, as many nations were in the midst of fighting WWI. And nothing about Covid-19 suggests it is the worst in terms of contagiousness. It’s not like measles, where you enter a room an infected person vacated an hour earlier, and get sick just from breathing the air. China appears to now be having success in containing the virus, after having initially been slow to recognize there was a problem. So clearly, it can be done.
Anyway, 40% infection rates look more like a worst-case, rather than best-case, scenario,
Equally, as many health professionals have stated, the death rate is probably not 2% or 3%, but something lower. That’s because the total number of cases known to public health agencies is probably lower than the real total, since people with milder infections don’t bother to go to the hospital and aren’t counted.
This is still a very serious situation, but I don’t think it helps to be alarmist.

ReplyDeleteOne thing you can always count on is for scumbag leftists to try to score political points out of any tragedy. Hurricanes, floods, fires, and pandemics are all just opportunities for political gain. Fuck that pulling together to weather misfortune stuff, we've got an agenda to advance!
ReplyDeleteNever let a crisis go waste.
“One thing you can always count on is for scumbag leftists to try to score political points out of any tragedy.”
ReplyDeleteHardly a leftist thing. Economic conservatives have routinely exploited natural disasters and wars to force through elitist, hypercapitalist policies that benefit the rich and harm everyone else, and which would have been too unpopular to have been imposed in any other way.
There was a whole book written about this phenomenon:
“The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism is a 2007 book by the Canadian author and social activist Naomi Klein. In the book, Klein argues that neoliberal free market policies (as advocated by the economist Milton Friedman) have risen to prominence in some developed countries because of a deliberate strategy of ‘shock therapy’. This centers on the exploitation of national crises (disasters or upheavals) to establish controversial and questionable policies, while citizens are excessively distracted (emotionally and physically) to engage and develop an adequate response, and resist effectively.”
Anonymous 8:43: I hope that you are right. I have seen different figures than those you cite. The trouble is lack of information, partly from chaos, partly from Chinese political censorship there and Trumpian public-relations censorship here. Here there is neither preparation nor competence nor leadership. Also there is nowhere yet any treatment or cure or vaccine. The vaccine will be here in 18 months; an eternity in virus time.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 9:06: Your racism will not protect you. Your misdirection will not protect you. Covid-19 does not care about your skin tint or your tribe. To it we are all snacks, including you.
Better Call Saul: It's called responding to a problem; the same way firemen show up when there's a fire. I agree that policy changed in a hurry tends to be bad; but so is policy that never changes however badly it fails.
"This centers on the exploitation of national crises (disasters or upheavals) to establish controversial and questionable policies, while citizens are excessively distracted (emotionally and physically) to engage and develop an adequate response, and resist effectively.”
ReplyDeleteFair point.
The Patriot Act comes immediately to mind, although that was fairly bi-partisan (i.e. permanent uniparty). I still blame Bush.

ReplyDeleteTrump as a leader hardly inspires confidence, of course. His presidency seems to be a vanity project driven by the need to feed his bloated ego, rather than any real desire to improve his country. I'm not sure he's even capable of caring about other human beings, and frankly, he's not too bright.
Early signs of preparations are not encouraging, either. That virus testing kits don't work, and that no government restrictions were put in place to prevent hand sanitizer hoarding and profiteering, doesn't suggest great organizational preparedness for a major outbreak in the US.
As far as information is concerned, Johns Hopkins has a Covid-19 tracker that maps all the cases of infection, globally, on a constant basis.
ReplyDeleteThis is the link. Not sure if this will reduce anyone's anxiety, though. In fact, checking it too often will probably increase your anxiety, lol.
What is really needed is more information about how the government is planning to respond to and contain large outbreaks here. That has not been forthcoming.

Hey Anon, crime rates are lower now than they were a few years ago. And I don't recall people being scared then. Maybe it's Trump they are scared of? And as has PilotX has repeatedly pointed out, victim and perpetrator most frequently are of the same race. Google it and look for national crime statistics web sites that provide demographic tables. Look for those that list crime data per capita.
The real crap shoot with this one is presymptomatic/asymptomatic transmission. Once that is in play, all bets are off, and the workings of the economy shut down and/or the uncontainable spread just kills chunks of entire populations willy-nilly.
ReplyDeleteOf course Fergus fucked up the response. That's what he does.
What makes this different is that it isn't a crisis of his own manufacture and thus requires more than him desisting from whatever behavioral malfunctions that caused it to make it go away.
That is, it requires actual effective action and competence, and he has none.
At my doctor's appointment today, everyone was professional, capable, and on the same page regarding the suppression of the virus' spread, just as I expect the Alameda County Health System to be in the face of two new cases confirmed here.
If every community had a Highland Hospital in it, we might not have the same magnitude of problem that we have, but they just don't, and some areas are pretty much doomed to worse outcomes than others.

This is an administration headed by a guy who admitted he didn’t want to let an infected cruise ship dock because of how it will look if virus “numbers” go up, rather than because of any sound epidemiological reasoning.
Trump: “I would rather because I like the numbers being where they are. I don't need to have the numbers double because of one ship that wasn't our fault.”
You’ll have to forgive us for not trusting these clowns.
To be clear, Trump was not referring to new infections when he talked about numbers going up. He meant that the already infected passengers would “count” as American infection cases (i.e., against Trump’s emergency management skills) if they disembarked, but would count as “foreign” cases if they stayed onboard.

Hey, calm down, Anon., I wasn't wishing death on anyone. I was asking a question. See, this is the problem with you crazy right wingers; you jump to erroneous conclusions based on insufficient evidence. You attribute to others your own anger and hate. Take a chill pill, dude!

No, Doug, we want to abolish standard time. For all the people in the eastern portion of each time zone, darkness comes shortly after 4:PM in the winter. It's depressing and experts say, it increases the crime rate. Check it out.
That's fine with me. It's the change that fucks everything up. Injuries at work and traffic accidents both increase in the week after the change,

ReplyDelete“How does one impeach a mayor?”

Brilliant stuff. Brilliant.

We all know how smart Trump is: He tells us every day over and over and over. LOL. He's so incompetent, he couldn't find his way out of a paper bag.
