Are we there yet?

" He who saves his Country does not violate any law" ~ Napoleon Bonaparte~

The president of the United States posted that quote on Saturday, February 15, 2025. I repeat: The president of the United States posted that quote on Saturday, February 15, 2025.

Napoleon was a despot, who believed that his regime reflected the will of the people of France.

Are we there yet?

I need your thoughts and feedback on this one.

*BTW, the image above is that of Benito Mussolini, not Napoleon Bonaparte or Donald J. Trump.

We’re certainly “there” in terms of Trump attempting to be a dictator. Mass firings of civil servants, decisions about what federal money to spend or not, and alterations of the definition of citizenship are not within the powers of the presidency. If Trump is allowed to get away with them, then he has achieved his goal of becoming a dictator.

The horrifying thing is the number of people that are still tuned out, even as liberals’ worst warnings about Trump come true. The apathy and cluelessness of a large percentage of Americans is still shocking.

“EOs are no good outside USA borders so Gulf of Mexico can not be name changed by a sick fuck despot. They also only pertain to federal government not state.”

Names of international geographical features are decided through international bodies, not by any leader of an individual country. So Trump pretending that he is allowed to rename the Gulf of Mexico implies he thinks the Gulf of Mexico isn’t an international geographic feature and the US actually owns it (and presumably all the oil under it).

This is 19th century colonialist nonsense, much like his expressed desire to retake the Panama Canal or invade Greenland.

Launching colonialist wars in the Western Hemisphere was listed nowhere in Trump’s campaign platform, any more than dismantling half the federal government was. Nobody voted for this.

“Too bad millions more Americans didn't pay attention to alarms about Project 2025 when it coud have changed their vote. FAFO!”

Yes, this is what liberals were warning about. Project 2025 is, effectively, a plan for dictatorship, since Trump and the Republicans don’t have the votes to make almost any of those policies happen — not without setting fire to the Constitution.

Still, while voters were incredibly gullible, none of this lets Trump off the hook. He swore that Project 2025 had nothing to do with him and he wouldn’t be implementing any of it. Which is now proven to be a lie.

  8. If Fergus has his way, we are there. But he is not too bright, and keeps walking in to the same traps over and over. Also, he's just lazy. Could he have enacted more of his batshit crazy EOs if he had followed procedure? Of course. But the point is not the content of those EOs, but their very conflict with the processes in place to enact EOs. In other words, he just wants everyone to have to do what he says, and doesn't really care what the things he says actually are.
It's been said that anyone who believes that they should be the president by definition has a massive ego, but there is a difference between ego and narcissism.
Narcissism and the lust for unbridled power go hand in hand, or in Fergus' case penis in rectum.

That got me and my girlfriend invited to parties in Albany, on the stipulation that we both dance to at least three songs during the evening.
I tried teasing them a couple of times and asking when I would get my hazing, but they just told me not to push my luck, and as we were all pretty good friends, I didn't.

  21. Both Trump’s net favorability and net approval — meaning the difference between the share with a positive view and the share with a negative one — were higher than they ever were during his first term as president.
But Economist / YouGov Polls since then have shown Trump’s approval rating and personal popularity both falling over the past two weeks; this week’s poll finds Americans are less likely to approve of Trump (46%) than to disapprove (48%), and less likely to view him favorably (46%) than unfavorably (52%).
    Trump is losing younger Americans:

Two weeks ago, 50% of adults under 30 had a favorable opinion of Trump, while 46% had an unfavorable opinion; today, 39% have a favorable opinion and 57% have an unfavorable opinion.
Trump’s favorability among adults aged 30 to 44 has also fallen, from 45% favorable / 51% unfavorable to 42% favorable / 55% unfavorable.

  22. Mike, whether or not Trump's ratings fall to record lows, before he's finished with his first 100 days he's going to have eviscerated the federal government, perhaps beyond the ability to restore it. Those federal employees and federal agencies are there for a purpose. I was dismayed at the thought of losing federal funds for NPR and PBS, but now that OSHA and FEMA fighting for their lives it's gotten way more scary!

Questionable whether a lawsuit would work. There’s no international court whose ruling Trump won’t ignore, and Mexico may or may not have the right to sue in a US court under these circumstances.

Also, can Mexico prove they have experienced actual harm (rather than just offense) as a result of Trump referring to it as the “Gulf of America”?

Similar legal questions apply with Google as a defendant. Now, maybe Mexico can sue Google in a Mexican court for this instead. But if they do, maybe Google will just make Google Maps inaccessible from Mexico, which would probably not make Mexican citizens very happy.

“I think some of the aspects of current American government that people on both sides find frustrating are partly a function of the inability of people to understand how government can and should function,” Souter said. “It is a product of civic ignorance.”

After quoting Benjamin Franklin’s admonition about democracy struggling to survive “too much ignorance,” the retired justice added, “I don’t worry about our losing republican government in the United States because I’m afraid of a foreign invasion. I don’t worry about it because I think there is going to be a coup by the military, as has happened in some of the places. What I worry about is that when problems are not addressed, people will not know who is responsible. And when the problems get bad enough ... some one person will come forward and say, ‘Give me total power and I will solve this problem.’ That is how the Roman republic fell.”

Souter concluded, “If we know who is responsible, I have enough faith in the American people to demand performance from those responsible. If we don’t know, we will stay away from the polls. We will not demand it. And the day will come when somebody will come forward, and we and the government will in effect say, ‘Take the ball and run with it. Do what you have to do.’ That is the way democracy dies. And if something is not done to improve the level of civic knowledge, that is what you should worry about at night.”

  69. I am going to quote from the 1954 Britannica article on Fascism regarding Mussolini's rise to power. His movement was born out of the chaos of WWI, but you may see some striking similarities and parallels to what is happening to our government now under the Trump takeover. What made me think of it was the takeover of the means of transportation and other sectors that actually preceded Mussolini's aligning himself with the wealthy classes. It is also interesting that he characterized the liberal government as doddering and inept touting a more forceful and youthful takeover. Also I noted that the upper classes saw Mussolini's fascists as a means of protection against the socialists and other political factions.

carried the social revolutionary motto by Blanqui, “Who has steel has bread,” and Napoleon’s saying, “The revolution is an idea which has found bayonets.” Mussolini’s first famous editorial bore the characteristic title, “Audacity.”
In the social unrest and moral confusion which followed the war of 1914-1918, Mussolini founded the Fasci di Combattimento on March 23, 1919, in Milan. The new group had no definite program; at first Mussolini was still a revolutionary syndicalist, who propagated the expropriation of the land, the mines, and all means of transportation. It was not until the beginning of 1921 that he allied his group openly with the propertied classes, with the landowners and the industrialists. But whatever his sociological affiliations, he was moved throughout by a fierce nationalism and by the love of violence and adventure. When he ran in Milan for a parliamentary seat in the elections of Nov. 16, 1919, he got less that 5,000 votes out of 346,000. But the deep social unrest prevailing in Italy in 1920 gave Mussolini a chance, and though the danger of any bolshevist or socialist success had entirely faded by the end of the year, Mussolini and his squads of violent young men appeared to the frightened upper classes as a guarantee of security. Thus, with the army conniving, Mussolini’s followers set for themselves the task of “restoring order” and breaking up the socialist movements and organizations. With a boastful ruthlessness, with the proud sacrifice of all ethical scruples to success, the local squadristis, under the leadership of men like Grandi, Balbo, Farinacci and others, set out for the conquest of power in the name of youth against what they called “the tottering parliamentarism” of the “senile” and undecided liberals. The lack of resistance on the part of the government, the army and the police, emboldened the fascists who had formed themselves into the national fascist party in Nov. 1921.
In the following year Mussolini completely abandoned his original socialist, anti-monarchist and anti-Catholic program. He had no definite doctrine to offer. “Our program is simple: we wish to govern Italy. They ask us for programs, but there are already too many. It is not programs that are wanting for the salvation of Italy, but men and will power.” On Oct. 28, 1922, the famous march on Rome was staged.

It's not unheard of for judges to torpedo plea deals, although it raised a lot of suspicions of political interference when this happened in the Hunter Biden case. With conservatives spinning wild, evidence-free conspiracy theories that made out that Hunter was some kind of Al Capone-like mega criminal and demanding he be crucified, liberals wondered whether someone had pressured the judge into making this decision.

But I don't know what a judge is supposed to do if, as in this case, prosecutors have been explicitly ordered not to prosecute a case because their boss (and their boss' boss) is a corrupt autocrat. Can the judge force them to prosecute? The correct remedy here should really be Congress impeaching Trump, so he can be replaced by a president who respects the rule of law. But congressional Republicans are all spineless jellyfish who mindlessly rubber-stamp Trump's decisions, so we know that ain't happening.
