I am sure she thought that this revelation would bring her closer to the rest of her MAGA friends and put her in the driver's seat to be Donald Trump's VP pick, but it backfired. She has been living in a MAGA bubble where being cruel to poor and underrepresented people was fashionable, so she thought that this mentality would translate to animals as well.
Sadly for her, and her political career, her calculation was way off. She forgot how much American's love their pets, especially their dogs. (I could have told her. I wrote about this very thing years ago.) Now, Americans are united in their outrage at her actions. I mean seriously, who murders a puppy?! She tried to rationalize away her actions by saying that she lived on a farm, and that farmers have to make tough choices between life and death when it comes to their animals. But no one is buying it. We are talking about a puppy for crying out loud. The thing is, the man she has been auditioning for would have probably done the same thing. Cruelty to animals is a known trait of sociopaths. Donald Trump hates dogs, and Kristi Noem knows that. This little blurb from her book was to him and the rest of the MAGA base. These folks, after all, believe that cruelty is sexy. The cruelty is the point with them.
This, though, was a bridge too far. And Noem knows it. Her political career is over. If Trump wins he might reward her with a position in his cabinet, but that's the best she can hope for.
Americans will forgive her cheating on her husband with a known scumbag, but not killing a puppy.

When I was a kid, we had German Short Haired pointers. They were great dogs. I don't remember having to train them to hunt pheasants, but I was just a kid and perhaps I missed that part. Both of them were female, and both of them managed to sneak off of our property and get pregnant. The puppies were dark brown and not the sort of dogs that you can hunt pheasants with. One of the two bird dogs, though, got really aggressive after she had her puppies, and both of them would go after chickens. My dad, because the aggressive dog was the better pheasant hunter of the two, sold her to someone with the wherewithal to deal with her on more land than we had, and got the other dog spayed. We never had any more problems with that dog, and she moved to town with us when we moved, and became a beloved family pet who spent a lot of time sleeping on the hearth.
ReplyDeleteIf you have bird dogs, you don't let them around chickens. That is common knowledge. Any animal that you own, you have to know how to deal with their behavior and tendencies before you even get them. Like you have to know how to drive before you buy a car. Animals aren't toys or accoutrements for you to show off to your friends. They have their own lives to live and if you are responsible for them, it's on you to facilitate that life. And yes, I know about livestock. At the same time we had those bird dogs, we raised our own cattle and pigs.
As I have already said, Kristi Noem shooting her dog for being inconvenient and bragging about it in a book is pretty much peak republican.

ReplyDeleteI don’t think they’re going to do this, but what it does seem likely they are going to do is to pretend to deliberate over the merits of Trump’s immunity claims, as if they were legitimate and not utter nonsense. They’re going to send them back to a lower court for more consideration, and then they’ll come back to the Supreme Court again, thereby allowing judges to waste all kinds of time scratching their chins and wondering whether presidents are actually kings.
So, basically, they’re giving Trump exactly what he wanted from these immunity claims: a massive delay of his trial.

ReplyDeleteMaybe the opposite is true. She could have invented the whole episode for “cruelty points,” hoping Trump would name her his VP nominee if she bragged about being the biggest bitch in the universe. At this point, I’m not sure she has ever even owned a dog.
She’s already admitted she lied in the book about meeting Kim Jong Un, although she said she was just mistaken, which makes no sense. I’m not sure how you could think you met a weird dictator with a weird haircut, but actually didn’t. That’s not really something you could be confused about. He’s pretty memorable.
She also said she turned down an invitation to meet French President Macron, but refused because, according to her, he is “pro-Hamas.” Macron’s people say there was no invitation and who is this Noem person anyway?
Her memoir should be titled “Pants On Fire.”
