Barack Obama doesn't care about white people.

*
O my O man, who knew? And here I thought your were just another smooth talking politician who knew how to navigate between black and white worlds. A unifier; a consensus builder. You were never one of those black racist; you are someone who preaches love not hate. But apparently, the white Kanye West, Glen Beck, doesn't think so. ["Gorge Bush doesn't care about black people". (I know Kanye, but he is gone now.)] Seems Beck called you out on FOX NEWS and said you were a racist. Yep, he did it. He said you had issues with white people. You know what that means O man? It means that you hated your mama, and that just might mean that you have some serious issues not only with white people, but with women as well.

But seriously, for those of you who are surprised at Mr. Beck's remarks, you must not have been reading this blog for the past year. I tried to tell you about FOX and their agenda, and you all kept telling me that I am focusing on the wrong thing. That FOX NEWS is just being FOX NEWS and I should move on and leave them alone. Well, maybe now that they are ratcheting up the race baiting on your boy, you will see where I am coming from. Beck and company are not stupid. They know the people that they are trying to attract in this country. By telling them Obama is a racist he is telling them that it's cool for them to be racists as well. Hey, he hates you, so why not hate him? It's kind of simple when you break it down isn't it?

Now I know I know, Beck is an entertainer, and so is Kanye. But the difference is, Kanye West is a rapper and musician, Glen Beck is a political commentator, who reaches millions of his fellow A-merry-cans every day on his radio program and every night on his television show. Kanye West spoke out of anger and disgust from the heart about one of the greatest tragedies in A-merry-ca's history. What is Beck's motivation? Because his O ness rightfully called some racist cop stupid? I heard a lady on MSNBC tonight and she made a good point: Beck will always get corporate sponsors who want his show to do well, because this type of rhetoric divides the races and plays right into their (the corporations) hands. God forbid poor black and white people ever get together in this country, it would shake up the entire apple cart. Talk about crabs in a barrel. Poor people in this country are in one big fucking crab barrel.

Beck is trying to reach those poor white people in the barrel and believe me, he doesn't want them to crawl out. Sadly, it's working, I am sure most of you have heard by now about the racist cop in Boston. No, not Jim Crow, [thanks Rippa] the one on the Boston P.D. who was caught sending racist messages about Skip gates via e-mail. The one who I am sure listens to Glen Beck and others like him every day, and who believes that the race war is coming.

It's funny how racism works isn't it? I get accused of being a racist and racism chaser all the time. It's bullshit, but I will wear that badge, because I am passionate about this shit, and I am cynical when it comes to matters of race. His O ness, on the other hand, is trying to be a race neutral icon, and yet, white folks won't let him. They throw the racist label at him like Pedro Martinez fastball and hope it hits him right between the eyes. He dodges and ducks, and tries everything to appease them, (Beer anyone?) but they keep throwing. Why? Because race neutral icons might actually make it cool to do away with ignorance for one minute, that's why.

Anyway, while the Glen Becks of the world does his thing. The field Negroes of the world will do theirs. Unlike the house Negroes who want to make nice with him and his ilk, we will be over here calling him and everyone like him on his bullshit. And we will call the house Negroes on it, too. They might want to be around people who despise everything about their black asses, but us field Negroes will pass and continue to make them uncomfortable. You can call it crabs in a barrel if you want to, but it's far from it. Some of you crabs can haul your black asses right out of the barrel, I guarantee you that the rest of us won't even care. Besides, you will only be going to another bigger whiter barrel with a lot more crabs.

  3. I concure with uptownsteve...u are on fire!

    Don't stop.

I've decided that certain Americans would rather have a destroyed America than a biracial POTUS.

Check out what the cops in Georgia got caught doing http://www.11alive.com/rss/rss_story.aspx?storyid=133173

Personally, I'm wondering what will these fools do next.

Problem with fires is they get out of control, such as when FN wrote this about the lady who called the Cambridge police: "a nosey ass racist, and I still think she is full of shit. Let's make one thing clear: The reason she felt a need to call 911 in the firt place is because she saw TWO BLACK MEN TRYING TO PUSH THEIR WAY INTO A HOUSE."

The 911 tapes show Field's statement to be simply wrong, not just as to facts but as to how those facts should be interpreted. The woman did not mention race in her call, and voiced uncertainty about whether it was a breakin at all, and said only after prompting from the dispatcher that one of the men might have been Hispanic but that she wasn't sure.

Field, among with a bunch of other people, owe the woman a retraction and an apology. I won't hold my breath waiting for it, because my estimation is that in this case Field has been seriously jonesing on his inner "fire."

Something about heat and light, I'd say.

  5. Well lets see.The last 8 years ya'll called Bush everything but a child of God and FN and his ilk was ok with that.

    Obama racist?? Lets see--

His judge believes in racial superiorty.

His favorite pastor Rev J wright hates whitey.

He listen to sermons about the evils of whitey for over 20 years.

Also seeing how FN,people of his ilk,and the Obama loving MSM has to defend Obama and attack Beck you can see where one would say he's racist.

But can a uncle tom be racist??

Every time I think that Beck cannot possibly be more idiotic I am proven wrong. This may be the final straw that gets him fired so that he can return to a lifestyle more suited to his "talents", that of a methmouth local bully.

thank you I was about to explain this to R.

The reason why certain Americans are attacking President Obama's citizenship and skin color is because they are pandering to the lowest common denominator of the citizenry.

I could discuss so many issues with the Bush Administration without once referring to his race.

Americans such as Dobbs, Beck et al
can't or won't do the same for President Obama.

Mr. R. -- aim higher than referencing Jeremiah Wright. I know you can bring the brilliance.

Poor white folk too blinded by their own hatred of the "other" and clinging to their "imagine" superior place in the food chain are willing to let themselves sink deeper into the quagmire of poverty, racism and ignorance so these corporate assholes can keep collecting their multi-million dollar bonuses all the while laughing at their asses.

No matter how much she tries to change the facts. The facts of the matter is that she called the po po when she say Skip and his driver going into his home. Hispanic man, little man, tall man short man, it doesn't matter to me one bit what she said to the 911 operator. What matters to me is that she felt a need to make the call in the FIRST PLACE.

See grinder, it's simple with me: would she have made the call if it were two white men trying to get into that house? If your answer is yes, then she is vindicated in your eyes. If it is no. Then she is not. Guess which side I come down on?

I managed to catch that last part while eating dinner. I guess Beck with the razor like mind forgot that the Pres' mother was white, but never mind about such details. I guess his mind has been shredded from that sharp mind of his. I was listening to NPR this morning asking the folk from places like Bistrol, PA about healthcare reform, and man said that he did trust the government with healthcare because it is the minorities who will taken care of and not people like him.

There are a lot of igorant people out there who also lack critical thinking skills, and some of these folks that Elvis is alive and the moon landing existed. They believe the Pres was not born in this country. I am concerned that these individuals can be dangerous due to their igorance and fear. Beck better say feet do not fail me if any thing should happen to the Pres.

    Field, long time lurker here.

I don't think anything is going to change in this sad story until the media acknowledges that Crowley lied, straight out lied, on his police report.

He lied about talking to Lucia Whalen.

He lied about the "acoustics in the kitchen." I mean, this is a real whopper, you really have to look it up.

He lied about giving his badge number.

Who knows what else he lied about.

I'm not a lawyer, but I can guess that falsifying a police report is at least punishable by formal disciplinary action... if not outright illegal.

I expect to hear about none of this in the national media. Ever.

If so, my brother, may I make a suggestion... if you sincerely want to work on race, I challenge you to spend your time on white blogs challenging the overtly racist shit that is being spewed.

One of the things that you, and un-reflective white folks need to do, imho, is stop telling black folks that their perspective, informed by their experience is wrong. Instead, why don't you just shut up for a little while and marinate your brain in trying to understand the other... see it from their perspective. And, yes, you can try.
We have all experienced being an oppressor and being oppressed. Get in touch with those moments when you were dismissed, soley because of who you were. Think of your childhood, when adults dismissed your thinking because of your age. Think of how the adult world saw you as a teenager, as just that, a teenager and not the full human you were up to that point, because they dismissed all teenagers.... I got a laugh over that as I know how racist (against blacks) those Easterners are, having worked among 'em.

Grinder, why is it that you keep coming back here? Are you here to learn anything? Do you think you have nothing to learn? Or are you here only to "defend" a so-called white perspective on the issues of race and how they play out?

If so, my brother, may I make a suggestion... if you sincerely want to work on race, I challenge you to spend your time on white blogs challenging the overtly racist shit that is being spewed.

Damn good question. I agree with you that it's a waste of time, quite frankly. When the guy who runs this blog doesn't give a rat's ass about facts, and when his cheering section overwhelmingly despises whites, you're right -- it's time to split.

This was an interesting experiment, but I'm thinking it's over with. There's no "dialogue" here. It's mostly just exchanges of hatred, really, including Field's. Hey, it's America. He (and you) can hate if you want. No law against it.

  62. @uptownsteve,

This is a non news issue. This is crap. The cop was wrong in arresting Gates, the professor was wrong in the fact that he freaked out (which, if I had just come off a long trip from China I would have, too) and O'Man shouldn't have commented on a non-new item. Bottom line is the cop f****d up by arresting him, but that's it and the end. Alpha/omega.

Am I wrong, if you think so, then I am. But, I would imagine, if one were to take a step back and look at this in the perspective of all that is going on today, this is a very trivial issue.

As for race relations, yes, I think at some point, we were progressing nicely. But, nicely is not the point. Bigotry will always rule, on both sides. Per your comment once about how I want to conrol things because I am white.

That is a ridiculous statement that you once made. I am far from a that type of person if you have ever read what I write on this blog. It is foolish to think that I am. But, you will think as you do.

Yeah, that's a good thing... but I wonder. This idiot may have sent a letter, but he didn't actually DO anything else. Crowley, on the other hand, arrested a man on false premises and tried to cover it up with a falsified police report. And what does Crowley get? Beer with the President.

That's the difference between sophisticated racism and unsophisticated racism.

  65. Mr. Field and Uptownsteve,

You are both on point! I'm loving this dialogue.

Another point of discussion, people like Glen Beck and Pat B. have no moral authority. It's not as if they have spoken out against injustice in general. They are only speaking out about what amounts to perceived (or real) loss of the idea of white superiority. This loss of white privilege, in their minds, is essentially equivalent to reverse discrimination. Until recently, to criticize the actions of white people (and have the social and political standing to back it up) without impunity has been difficult. People like Pat, Rush, and Glen can't stand the fact that they are no longer given unequivocal deference simply for being white.

grinder; the lady who called the cops said she did not mention that the men were black and did not talk to the cop when he got there. The cop wrote in his report that she did talk to him and she did mention that the men were black. If she is telling the truth does that not make everything the cop said about the incident suspect? If you believe that the cop is telling the truth then the you would have to accuse the lady of lying which is not different from what Field is saying.

Also note that so far Dr Gates has not been caught in a lie.

  70. There was a time I truly did not understand black anger and, even now, there have been times I've had to pause and really think from another angle/perspective so as to accept what is justifiable. Jody, you articulated perfectly that sentiment so well when you said "... Instead, why don't you just shut up for a little while and marinate your brain in trying to understand the other... see it from their perspective. And, yes, you can try.We have all experienced being an oppressor and being oppressed. Get in touch with those moments when you were dismissed, solely because of who you were....."

IMHO, many people lash out against or refuse to acknowledge racism because they cannot (and will not) see it any other way; there must be _another_ reason ( such and such incident wasn't racist..... you are taking it out of context or too far etc...) always seems to be lurking in the background when in fact, it was, cut and dry, racism.

Anyway, please keep on because some of us are listening, learning and confronting our own bias, bigotry and racism we thought we never had.

    ReplyDelete
  71. grinder, can we agree on this: We DON'T know what she would have done if she saw two white men. Since it wasn't two white men. Is that fair?

Okay, so let's move along with my logic game. But we DO know that she called the po po, and their just happened to be two black men. Is that fair?

You give her the benefit of the doubt that she would have called the cops regardless. Is that a fair statement?

I choose not give her the benefit of the doubt. Is that a fair statement?

If you said yes to all of the above then we shouldn't be remonstrating about this subject and you shouldn't be questioning my logic.

I hope this ends the tired exercise involving Mrs.Kravitz. I got a lot of angry e-mails from white folks (and black) wanting to know why I was hard on her. And I am glad I at least was able to address it in this thread.

  77. I think it’s very easy to criticize Black anger and hate by Whites because it is so incomprehensible to them. They deem it irrational, childlike, emotionally unstable, all of the characteristics that they label Black slaves for centuries and now Black Americans and not the abject frustration. I think Black anger is justified because we are still viewed as less than and I believe that Gates controversy reflects the fact that no matter how high a ladder you climb, how many degrees, accolades, money and hard earned respect you supposedly acquired from society, that Whites and other will be able to judged you based on your race, your cultural connection to what is perceived as perverse and pathological, and the merit of your achievements and your civic minded adherence to being a good citizen are utterly meaningless. I mean if Colin Powell can understand and he is deemed safe by many Whites and a hero, why can’t they see why the gates story angers some Blacks.

Gates elitism and his condemnation for living in an ivory tower merely obfuscates the fact that you are still just a N*gger. This is what makes many Black so angry. We can be obsequious to Whites, work ourselves to the bone being the good Black and what do we get for your troubles, suspicion, condemnation and not even being seen as part of America or even remotely human. If white people can’t understand this sticking point than this further illustrates to me why the dialogue on race is pointless. Therefore many Whites cannot empathize with people that they feel superior to and who they feel are beneath them and these feeling crosses economic lines.

On another note, the relative success of the Jews is that they always had a cultural and religious coherence that Blacks Americans lacked. They have often been perceived in the same manner that Blacks have, but they are able to insulate themselves for over 5000 years (way longer than blacks) and they have the meme of being a chosen people that further protects from being hated as the Other. Blacks don’t have the luxury of these unifying factors so we continue to destroy each other because when it comes right down to it, we do subconsciously believe what Whites have been telling us for centuries that we are sub-human and trying to be part of the White mainstream has always been the goal at the expense of community. And if fighting to be seen as greater than the sum of our ignoble past and virulent beliefs that many people hold about Blacks, then so be it—I will gladly be judged as the angry, hate-filled Black who despises White people.

  91. You are on a roll with this one, Field! This quote says it all: "Beck will always get corporate sponsors who want his show to do well, because this type of rhetoric divides the races and plays right into their (the corporations) hands. God forbid poor black and white people ever get together in this country, it would shake up the entire apple cart."

That is exactly it. The corrupt corporate (white male) power structure of this society always has and still has an intense interest in dividing those of us who work for a living - to keep us fighting each other, instead of fighting them. The race war is an offshoot - a long-term strategy and a short-term tactic of a class war that began long before our nation was born. Black and white poor folks marched together in comradeship in Bacon's Rebellion, way back in 16-whatever-it-was, and rich WASP men have been intentionally stirring the racial stew ever since. Divide and conquer. It worked then, it works now.

I don't know whether that helps me to understand racism in America, but I do know it makes me sick to my stomach. I feel sad seeing you express yourself this way. We european-americans are no more the single entity than y'all are; we are individuals, widely divergent in our views and understanding. Believe it or not, I'm on your side. 92. Dear Brother Field
I hope you were able to watch Larry Elder on the Larry King show tonight. If you need an example of a house negro, he is your boy!

They were talking about the Gates thing and he could not be held back from jumping to the defense of any white man who was mentioned by either Larry King or the other guests. It was an amazing example of tomming, cooning and jigging, the likes of which I have not seen since I was a child in the '50s.

I think you should have a special award for those who go all out to defend white privilege and impunity. Maybe the "Brass Raccoon" or something like that. So many contenders!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Nope, I'm not surprised either. This is Glenn Beck, the same asshole that co-signed his guest's insane assertion that only Osama Bin Laden could "save America" with mass carnage. The man is certifiable and I don't say that lightly.

Oh and personally, I think ya'll are giving Grinder a bad rap.

I'm hardly convinced that the caller lady was racist. Nope, not at all. If anyone thinks my diversion from the "party line" somehow makes me a Tom/HN/Coon.....eat a dick hater, you obviously don't know me.

As for the Justin Barrett e-mail...wow. What a clusterfuck of words. It reads like a Sarah Palin keynote address to a national KKK convention:

you state Gates is "this immensely famous expext on race" - you really have to be kidding me? Famous for what? Expert why and says who? What has he done for me and my family? What has he done for the law enforcement community or military veterans or to secure freedoms and borders in this country? What has he done to help limit and reduce my income tax?

    O_O

The MSM is filling it's airwaves with a bunch of gobbily gook to take away from real issues, real examples of racial profiling and serious racism in this country.

Take for example Lou Dobbs and the Birthers. This should be reported and denounced by other media, yet it is not.

Then, there is a report, small blurb in my local paper that the Department of Homeland Security has been racially blogging on anti-immigrant sites. I'm all over that one today so that I can post something on my blog about it.

I do A LOT of highway traveling and let me tell you, racial profiling is alive and well in Amurdica. I see blacks and browns that have been pulled over all the time, who are made to open their trunks, doors, etc., and often contents of the vehicle are strewn around the verge. The whites I see pulled over are in their vehicles with the cops addressing them there.

For Gates to have made such a big deal, and because he is elitist anyway, he has cheapened the issue for the real folks who are f****d with for driving or being at home while black or brown.

    And, that is a FACT!

Now, you're disillusioned: Field didn't live up to your expectations of "truth, justice, and the American way."

  120. Alright. I'm going to chime in as one of your white readers here. I guess it's time for my 'teachable' moment.

Woman sees black men woman calls 911. You believe her when she says she didn't see the men's race, I say bullshit! And most black people would say bullshit as well. - Field

Okay, so you're saying that black people will vote along racial lines on a jury no matter what the facts are. Gotcha. If that's true it's a shame, but I guess that's life in America. - Grinder

I wouldn't have taken it that black people will vote racial lines on a jury so much as I would be skeptical that she can't see 'color' when she's looking out her window straight at with her ear glued to the phone reporting it. Meaning, she may not be able to see their exact race but she can certainly see that they are not Lilly white which, I think, might be Field's entire point. If they were, she wouldn't have called in the first place.

That said, I have to admit, my gut reaction at first was...why did Gates blow things out of proportion when asked for a simple ID? And I know why I had this reaction. The sum of my experiences includes a brother as a law enforcement officer. I also think it's awful easy for white people to tell black people how they 'should' behave with law enforcement.

All this said, I gotta say, this incident has made me realize we (both races) have a long way to go when it comes to speaking the same language. Some of it is just a matter of simple communication and light bulbs coming on. It was only this week that I realized that when the phrase 'white privilege' is used, the context is more in line with privilege from discrimination as opposed to having everything handed to us. Whoever said that this week on here, that was illuminating. The only thing I would add to it is that not all of us are sequestered from discrimination just because we are white however and, yeah, while it can be hidden for awhile, that doesn't make it right.

And some of this racial divide goes far beyond communication where we have people that just have no interest in 'teachable moments'. I read sites, for example, that have young white men that cannot conceive of this blog and what is spoken about here nor have they any interest in doing so. Which makes me discouraged because, young as they are, I see no improvement in the near future.

Which brings me to Grinder. I've read this blog for probably the past year now. I don't post a lot but, it seems to me, that he's always been respectful if not the target audience. The fact that he's now considering 'taking his ball and going home' when he's been a frequent participant here is just another indication of how divisive incidents like this can be in breaking down what has previously been dialogue - even if you don't always agree, but dialogue - and that's a shame.

    Alright. I'm done.

  123. Just because the caller did not mention race in her 911 call does not mean that race was not her motivating factor for calling 911.

It is tantamount to a cop pulling over a black driver on the NJ Turnpike, who has done nothing wrong. The cop does not mention race, but it does not mean that race was not a motivating factor.

Further, look at where this call took place-- a liberal NE college town, most people there are not going to mention race in a 911 call.

A certain segment of our population are being naive and oblivious as usual.

Mostly I sit back and just read here, but if I have some opinion I will say it. I do think a lot of black people on here hate white people kind of in general. It's my part as a white person to hopefully shed the myths and to open lines of communication amongst ourselves, black-white community.

However you got here, you're here now. You and me. Let's make this world a better place for ourselves, and for our children.

To the person who thinks all white people have 666 tattooed on our foreheads - you know what? I checked. Not there. Unless it's only visible by you?

Liberated black people are ones who are proud of themselves and their community.

Who don't apologize for being black and don't endorse the hatred of sick bigots like you.

Since we're still talking Gates, I want to reiterate what I said the other day. If Gates had been white, the neighbor would NOT have called the police. If Gates had been white, the policeman would NOT have arrested him, no matter how mad Gates was, especially after the policeman found out the man was in his own darn house. And since we're talking white and black perspectives: I am a white, middle-aged, Southern man. Maybe because of my job as a paramedic, where I often have police on the scene, I'm able to state my opinion so emphatically. I see stuff. And if Gates had been white: no 911 call, and no arrest from Crumley.

Well said Uptownsteve. I admire you 'cause you think just like me!
A Black man with intelligence who doesn't kow tow and walk on eggshells to appease whites is the biggest threat to their privileged existence. That's the real basis behind racism. As long as they can continue to suppress us and depress us, they will continue to opress us. Get a clue Black people; they can't stand us. Whether it shows on the surface, or it's buried deep within an elderly woman's 911 call; it's all the same. Even white people on this blog. If any of them could change their skin color at a moments notice, do you think they would? They would rather die than give up their white privilege.

    Fact.

  143. Whitney B.: Y'all know, there is a real lot of distraction from the REAL NEWS. Like the economy, health care, the two fake wars (police actions) etc. over this coverage of Gates-gate?

The fact of the matter is that this is dividing the races. Which, to my thinking, is so, so very wrong. And, quite frankly stupid, as in stupid in general, not that the po-lice acted stupidly, which they did.

Roderick: Whitney I think we can walk and chew gum at the same time. As a matter of fact I think one of the underlying problems that Obama is having with passing health care reform in the House is race. The Blue Dog Democrats are the ones gumming up the works and although they represent districts which McCain won last year I believe they are afraid to be associated with siding with a black man on legislation.
Case in point is Democratic Blue Dog Gene Taylor who represents south Mississippi in Congress. Dude said last year after Obama had wrapped up the nomination he didn’t know if he was going to attend the convention. I was like WTF?
And we know that Hillary played the race card several times at the end when thought she still had a shot at the nomination.

If such an isolated incident such as the one between Gates and Crowley can elicit so many polarized responses then just sweeping what divides us under the rug won’t work in the long term.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Many won't agree with what I'm going to say but in the interest of contributing to dialogue I'll throw in my two cents.

My gut reaction to the Gates drama was the President's. Officer Crowley acted stupidly. To paraphrase Bill Maher (whom I DO NOT agree with in all matters), Gates was arrested for not properly kissing the ass of Officer Crowley.

I disagree with the President's estimation of what constitutes the teachable moment here.

The teachable moment isn't the racism that can be perceived in the actions of Lucia Whalen or Officer Crowley. We all beat our heads against either side of the brick wall that keeps us from see the situation from the same perspective. Sure this is our right! But nothing is solved!

What can be learned is how to bring the issue of police abuse of power into the public discourse. Whether that abuse of power is due to racism or love of power cannot be easily proven.

What I've seen lately has been a small uptick in media coverage of police abuse of power. Sure the media has been selective and the victims of said abuse have been non-blacks, but as a POC I should be more concerned that the story is making it to a larger audience. Many people who have not been targeted by police and experienced abuse of police power have a hard time believing that it occurs at all and the burden of proof is on the accusers. The police receive a free pass. So it is a positive sign that this larger audience is exposed to these stories as it sheds light on an issue that affects every American.

If we could stop thinking of the Gates arrest as a racial issue and instead look at it as a police abuse of power issue we can attack a common problem from a common perspective.

Why not force Congress to make a law against lying on the News or holding Fox and CNN responsible for hate speech, because basically that is what it is. They need to start hauling the Fox crew to jail for inciting riots and hate speech. It's a difference between freedom of speech and hate speech. Also, inciting riots is a crime, if I'm not mistaken so is hate speech. And make not mistake that is what it is no matter how subtle they try spit it out. Or force Homeland Security to arrest them.

You can send letters and sign petitions to their sponsors and join the different civil rights org that are asking for them to take these people off the air and complain to FCC. There is more than one way to skin a cat. Work on thinking of how to do it, other than boycotting products.

Kanye and Beck are both bigots. While Beck is an obvious example, Kanye is only slightly less so; for example, take Kanye's quote about interracial relationships and offspring: "If it wasn’t for race mixing there’d be no video girls. Me and most of our friends like mutts a lot. Yeah, in the hood they call ‘em mutts”.

When you think about is, Kanye has a much more of a negative effect on the black community because he actually has an influence on the young, unlike Beck.

Perhaps, I should have qualified my statements and spoke for myself. Speaking for myself, I have a lot of baggage when it comes to the issue and race. I harbor extreme prejudice toward whites. Occasionally, I will encounter a white who "appears" to be cool; hence, I slightly lower my guard.

In other words, my disposition prevents me from participating in a so-called productive dialog on race. I suspect that some other blacks feel the same way.

Those who don't, won't speak against those in the wrong, either. The 'silent black majority' is no different from the 'silent white majority' when it comes to race. Mr. R,

The real problem in the black community is the collapse of the family structure. It's now a rare thing for black children to have a father (or even a father figure) present in the house. Single mothers are much more likely to be mired in poverty than women who can rely on a mate. I think somebody else posted it on another thread but Louis Farrakhan summed up the current problems within the black community quite well.

@ Kathy - I chose this neighborhood and school for many reasons. One of which is the fact that my mom lives here. I need help and Grandma is awesome.

The social environment is amazing at our schools. There are many races, and all are acknowledged and celebrated. I remember the Hindi woman (whose son is friends with my kid) when she first moved here. She was really concerned about being Muslim and Middle Eastern, and would her child be treated decently? We've become friends since then and I think she now knows that she and her family are welcome and a part of the process. But you are assuming that I chose a predominately white school. How do you know what the racial balance is? Our lives are enriched by culture, and that is true for my school. That's a BIG reason why I chose that school. Lots of different people, and my kids learn that people are people. If you saw my kids play with their friends, maybe you'd change your mind. I wish you could meet my kids! They are truly colorblind, in a way that even myself can never be. I raised them right.

I'm getting pretty tired of defending myself. I feel like people read what they want in my words and then attack me. I have read responses to my posts where it is clear that the person isn't hearing what I am trying to say. Maybe I am not clear in my speaking. Maybe people's minds are already made up. Maybe you read what you want to.

I have black friends and Hispanic friends and Asian and Middle Eastern and whatever else comes along. If I say, "Hi! My name's Wendy! What's yours?" I hope that you will respond kindly. I have put myself out on a limb here. My intention was to join, but I see that whatever I do or say people think what they want to anyway. Okay, not all of you. But enough that it's making me feel sh*tty about myself. The next time I am feeling a little too happy, I know where to go! LOL.

On this blog in the comments section, you will discover that there are white and black racists. You will find out that either all white people are devils or that black people are dumb, or whatever is the opinion of the person who is writing at the time. I was hoping to find common ground, but I am instead rebuffed.

I reach out my hand to find myself made fun of. Guess what? I don't need it. I guess I will come back here, but it is very discouraging. I'd much rather seek a blog where people are actually having conversations about how to make things better.

Again, I apologize to those I have offended. I encourage you to write me at home if you are at all interested in making friends with the other humans. Here I am! My email is in my profile.

Those issues do not define our personal lives and is obviously a diversionary tactic on your part to shift any conversation dealing with white racism.

I've done plenty of community and mentoring work so I am well aware of the problems of the inner city and attempt to do my part to make a bad situation somewhat better.

Bsweet, your reaction is understandable. Any white person who posts here has been through it. What we need to do is look for the cracks in the sidewalk. That's where the grass grows, and over time it overwhelms the concrete. Grass is stronger than it looks.

Obviously, I came back here. It occurs to me that I am just as hooked on this stupid Gates story as anyone is. For some reason it draws me like a moth to a flame. I think it's less the story itself than a phenomenon I've noticed in myself in which I ignore most "little stories," but when I pay attention I pay a whole LOT of attention.

I have repeated myself too much in these threads, so to the extent I say anything more about l'affair Gates I will try to say something I haven't said before.

Here is something I haven't said before. Right next to Cambridge, there is the town of Somerville, most of which is far less upscale. It used to be lily white, i.e., fulla Micks, but now it's three-quarters white, with Hispanics, blacks, and Asians roughly splitting the minority population.

As I look at Gates, I think he paid something of a price that day for being black. I think that price was counterbalanced by his being a Harvard professor. If he'd been an ordinary Mick and found a way to mouth off in a similar fashion, under similar circumstances, to a Somerville cop, I have relatively little doubt that he'd have not only been in jail, but that he'd have nursing a loose tooth or three.

Most people here, including Field, don't want to hear that. But it's what I think. Others will differ. Finally, before anyone interprets this comment as an endorsement of Gates's arrest or of police brutality, please try to go find some of the other things I've written. That's the flip side of not doing the repetition act all the time.

  177. The most difficult aspect of racism is seeing that all involved are victims.

I know that most people do not want to hear such a thing, but it's the truth.

White people are not born Neo-Nazis anymore than black kids are born Crips or Bloods.

The majority of racists are taught.

I worked with numerous gang bangers who joined a gang because that's what the other males in the family did.

    Same thing with many racists.

    But not everyone is taught.

Some kids become racists because they are looking for a way to release their rage.

Maybe they were abused at home or maybe their peers bullied them. Whatever the reason, many racists are looking to vent, and they seek out those that have even less power.

That is what makes racism such a difficult issue with which to deal.

Racism doesn't have to be taught because it permeates, radiates throughout our culture.

At some point, kids figure it out, even if no one said a word.

    How do you stop it?

I am not excusing racists nor am I pretending to be one of those people who loves his enemies.

    I do not.

But when I honestly think about these deep rooted issues, when I look at them through the lens of Sociology, I find myself overwhelmed because so many of our social problems are intertwined.

Is it human nature to be self destructive? Is all of this part of a conspiracy to maintain the status quo? Or, is it chance that our destructive behaviors benefit those who wish to maintain power?

Is there even an answer? And if there isn't an answer, does that mean there's no solution?

No other nation on earth has such a racially charged history.

We are literally standing on the bones of millions of people who were murdered only because they looked, and acted differently.

How can that not affect us?

Get a clue Black people; they can't stand us. Whether it shows on the surface, or it's buried deep within an elderly woman's 911 call; it's all the same. Even white people on this blog. If any of them could change their skin color at a moments notice, do you think they would? They would rather die than give up their white privilege.

    You don't know me.

Neither do you want to; fair enough.

But I've heard this "what if" scenario before, and while it may be true in the main, it isn't true of everyone. I would rather I didn't wear the skin color of the world's oppressors.

Rudy-"Why are people a glutton for punishment?"

It is known that people are addicted to television, excitement, sensationalism and high drama. Lou Dobbs, O'Reilley, Hannity, Glen Beck, provide this in the arena of news entertainment. They know the more outrageous things they say, the bigger their ratings are going to be. I bet that their black viewers are growing as well as their white viewers. Haven't you noticed that there is a growing number of Blacks, on a daily basis, who are talking and blogging about Lou Dobbs, O'Reilley and Glen Beck?

Who in their right mind would listen to, and talk about the crap those folks throw out over that boob tube? Blacks, liberal Whites, Conservatives, Dems, and Repubs will listen. Why? because they are addicted to their crappy feelings of anger, fear, lust and hate. That's why people become exhausted and have to take breaks from that shit. And believe me, it IS shit. But like shit eating dogs, once you have developed the taste for it, they have to have it as part of their diet.

What about those commentators who deliver information without offending Blacks? Their ratings aren't as half as strong as O'Reilley's. Many Blacks hardly even mention their names. But you can find Limbaugh, Hannity, Lou Dobbs, O'Reilley, and Glen Beck all over the black blogosphere everyday. Those offended say those broadcasters are all sick.

But who's sicker? The ones doing the talking or the one's listening and responding to them?

America is an emotionally sick country.

I don't always agree with what you say, but I think you do the research and decide for yourself.

Take a look at my previous post @ Roderick 1:49PM.

Intelligent discourse is appreciated by me, anyway. (The mud slingers only show their own petard, as it were.) That's why I couldn't stay away too long either.

I have too much respect for folks like Granny, Prophetess, Black Diaspora, Jody, Kid and you and many others.

    Yo grinder,

If it makes you feel any better, I left a few posts over at "frontpagemag.com" (a white conservative website)today and they didn't appreciate my contributions one bit.

As a matter of fact, I was called nigger so much I thought they changed my forum name.

I've only had one fight with some woman once who isn't here anymore who said I was making generalizations when I was giving her stats from the Census bureau. How dare you accuse me of things I didn't do. And as for Grinder, I said sometimes he is fine and makes a fair point but other times I think he is wrong/off point and picks fights. I'm going to pick a fight with you right now and tell you to take a long walk off of a short pier. Stupid ass. Man or woman up and at least make up a damn name. Coward.

Something else I have not said:

I usually view racism in intensely personal terms. (Not always, as I will explain later, but usually.) I think this is an outgrowth of what might be a genetically-based personality trait. No one ever taught it to me: I detest bullying and bullies to a degree that I literally can't capture in words. I have a "protector" streak a mile wide, and it has led me to do things for individuals throughout my life.

If I see or hear of someone being bullied, I see red. Don't care who the bully is, or who the bullied is. To me, one-on-one racism is bullying, and I detest it with every cell of my body. I have quite literally put myself in between bullies and the bullied, and I'll probably do it again.

I reacted as I did to Field's words about Lucia Whalen because I saw bullying there. I'm a white man, and I am intimately familiar with the unspoken codes. I look at her and saw someone who did the right thing and who's being bullied for it. That's why I stalked off into the night yesterday.

Institutional racism is real, but I don't have the same genetic reaction. There, my reaction tends to be intellectual, and "policy driven," if you will.

There is one shining exception that immediately comes to mind, and that is New Orleans. I saw a TV commentator last night who remarked that whites tend to see New Orleans as "government incompetence," while blacks see it as "institutional racism."

As it concerns New Orleans, I am black as coal. I view it as literally attempted genocide. It is no surprise to me that the perpetrator was the same presidential administration that devised and implemented torture. To me, New Orleans and torture stand hand-in-hand. They'd better never make me emporer, because some necks would be six inches longer.

This is the way I see things. I realize there are gaps and inconsistencies. Rather than try to fill them in with empty words, I think it's better to tell you how I think and let those chips fall where they may.

@ Kathy and Anon 3:54 - What do you see when you look at my icon? Guess what? A lot of people are basing their opinions of who I am and what I think BASED ON MY APPEARANCE. I don't like it any more than you do. Prejudice goes far beyond racism.

If you see the shell of my person, you see may see a privileged white woman who represents what is wrong with America. You can see a person you think has everything you want. But is that real, or is it an illusion created by your mind from all the injustices of your life before you ever saw me?

I am smiling at the camera because I am having a picnic at a park with a friend in LA and it was a really happy moment for me. In that picture, I am 38 years old. I am now 40. I do look good for my age. I am happy with who I am. It's taken me many years to find that happiness.

Maybe I'll put up a different photo and then you can see me in the phases of my life that it took me to get where I am today.

Sad little girl whose stepfather beat her when he drank.

Scared little girl whose mother's boyfriend raped her.

Angry little girl whose mother BLAMED HER for the rape.

Cold little girl who let him do it for 2 years because it was a shame that I supposedly brought on myself for what? Being blonde and busty.

Yeah, I learned how to use it. I did what I did and that's done now. But I'll be goddamned if I am going to let some lady I've never even met before tear down that very fragile person inside me. I am a very kind and loving person who has been doing her darndest to reach out.

I've learned how to take care of the child in me. In so doing, I have become a hell of a mother to 5 beautiful children.

My three stepchildren, you ask if I celebrate and educate their Hispanic heritage. Yes. I will tell you, but do you hear me?

My 10 year old Hispanic stepson had a project to do in school this year. It was a project that had to do with Washington State. I did a report with him about the local Hispanic artists. There were a LOT of white people in Seattle's history. But I looked, and I found, many brown people who look like him, that HE can relate to, and share that with the class. That's how I educate. I like reading, and we read lots of books about Hispanic heroes. My boys like "heroes" a lot, and I've found it's a good way to get their attention.

I hope you understand me a little bit better now.

Make sure you take care of your inner child. You deserve it and don't let some heartless ignoramus who has a problem with your photo tear you down. They are small minded miserable people. I can relate to child abuse and I know how important it is to have a happy photo of yourself, one that will lift you up, not tear you down. To hell with those who want you to be miserable like them.

Don't put your emotional well-being into their hands because they could care less about you. Be a good parent to your inner child--guard and protect it.

The Willie Lynch Letter is now 297 years old. It resonates to this day. Now: In an era where slavery has been abrogated for 144 years, and full civil rights have been the formal law of the land for 45 years, what place does it have?

Obviously, it's a searing historical artifact. It is more than that, because while it's 297 years old it is not as if the impact of the ideas behind it somehow died 297 years ago.

Yet, things are different now. Not as different as many whites want to believe. More different than many blacks want to believe.

This is America. We are the New World. We make a new history every day. You too.

    well it's true.

"I really do despise white people. When it all boils down they are too filled with hate to see past it."

You hate white people because they are filled with hate but can't see past it. Just like your description of yourself.

I feel bad when blacks folks try and sound intelligent yet fail so miserably.

    @ Anonymous 4:44 pm -

Thank you. I don't think Kathy's an ignoramus though. But she may be prejudiced against me for the reason I already mentioned. If you only see my outside, it is easy to place blame or hatred at me. I say that I don't like it as much as black people don't like it!

I do protect my inner child. I protect her because she is still so scared and angry, although so much better for the years and experience. But that part of me that felt so cold, angry, hurt, scared, that part won't let me stop trying here. That little girl in me sees the little girl in you and we have both felt hurt and shame. I want that to go away for you and for me. Namaste.

p.s.: You are every bit as much as American as I am. (Which, by the way, is what truly upsets me about the so-called "birthers.") We are in this together. Bit by bit, we are making a new history. What that history looks like is going to be, in very large part, a matter of those blades of grass that force their way up between the cracks in the sidewalks.

So what are you, a blade of grass, or part of the sidewalk? Choice is yours.
