American Minstrels.

When the revolution finally starts I have to say that there are some white folks who I would rather have on the front line fighting next to me before some of you Negroes. (You know who you are.) I am sorry, but being black doesn't automatically get you a pass. Some of you Negroes (you know who you are) do much more to hinder black empowerment than you do to help. And I am not talking about the obvious Negroes: the ones who are destroying our communities by doing ignorant shit on a daily basis. They are easy to identify. I am talking about the Negroes who would sell out another Negro (or anyone else for that matter) quicker than I can say Oprah if it suits your own selfish needs. Dere dey go massa. It's dat field Negro; he de one. I heard him tellin dem other Negroes dat de should run away.... Let me stop.

I am blogging about this tonight because of a little incident which took place "down under" with one of "The Big Easy's" favorite sons. Seems my man Harry Connick, Jr., was hosting a variety show "down under" when the Aussies fooled around and thought that they would recreate A-merry-ca in the forties and fifties. (Not to mention the present if you count republican get to-gethers and college frat parties.) To Connick's credit, he called them on their bullshit and gave the Aussies a lecture about ignorant stereotypes and A-merry-can history.

But this post isn't about the Aussies or their black face skit. I have come to expect that kind of stuff from some people. No, this post is about Connick and his decision to speak out about what was happening and not just sit there and pretend that the crap wasn't offensive. Connick is one of those white folks who could stand next to me when the revolution is going down, because, obviously, he isn't afraid to speak out against racism and ignorance when he sees it. He could have said nothing and this incident would not have made world news and blew up on You Tube. It would have been just another variety show on a far away continent with a bunch of bad acts.

Now ask yourself; would a black celebrity in Connick's place have done the same thing? I am sure that quite a few would. But I can think of just as many who wouldn't have. In fact, I can see many of them (you know who they are) laughing and going along with the skit. Hell some of them (you know who they are) would have jumped on stage and started dancing right along with the performers who were in black face. Connick, to his credit, stayed true to his principles.

"I just want to say, on behalf of my country, I know it was done humorously, but we've spent so much time trying to not make black people look like buffoons, that when we see something like that we take it really to heart,"

Well Harry, you can't speak on behalf of your country, because I am quite sure that more than a few people in your country wouldn't see anything wrong with what the Australians did. And as to trying not to make us look like buffoons"; I think that's kind of hard to do when some of us try so hard to do just the opposite.

  4. He's righteous, humble and has always given credit where credit is due. I respect that about him. I am saddened that Aussies are still into that shit. But remember they call Aborigines people 'Black' and therefore the buffoonery has doubly negative overtones.

Tavis Smilley once interviewed the KKK as spoke to him as though he was an acceptable person. Where's the outrage? Oh, that's right it was a black klansman, FarraKKKHan. Tough shit black folks. You reap what you sow. Your civil rights leaders treat my people worse the the KKK treated you and I'm supposed to care that someone in Australia offended you? Go to hell. If you are going to be upset about racism overseas maybe FN you should report on that young Jewish guy lynched in Paris. Those Africans held him for 3 weeks in which he was tortured- burned stsrabbed, beaten. Then his naked torso was left hanging from a tree. Didn't see any outrage from black folks here, or there either for that matter. But they will burn Paris to the ground if the cops so much as arrest one of their thugs.
At least Emitt Till was out of his misery in a few hours. This guy has it prolonged by the black lynch mob for 3 weeks. He was picked for being Jewish too. Yeah, no reporting on that FN?
But now you want to bitch about being dissed in Australia. A black male being dissed is far more offensive to blacks than a Jewish person being brutally lynched, esp when you are the ones doing it.

Harry Connick reminds me of Jimmy Carter...Both are not afraid to say the obvious about racism. Harry doesn't give a damn about what others think of them they say whats on there minds...
He and Jimmy were the Whites who worked with the underground railroad back in the day. Thank God for Whites who do understand "Racism exist and speak out on it"

  10. M. Rigmaiden, I am aware of that story and almost blogged about it. It's a sad one, but talk about irony. BTW, there was just a study done here at Penn which concluded that people who own handguns are more likely to be killed by a gun.

  12. Hmm. Good for Connick. But I need to know something: Can I still laugh at Alan Keyes for reminding me of Little Richard whenever I see him ranting and raving on TV? Or should I think, "I shouldn't be laughing at this, because even though he is a buffoon, to laugh is too close to laughing at minstrel show 'cooning' of times gone past?

My uncle was hung February 14, 1913for his land by the KKK. He was a preacher. They covered that up with lies but his wife knew what had happened. She was with him when a man came to get him. His brother had leave town and stayed gone for years.

One of the Little Rock Arkansas Nine was related to me too. Relatives told me that she could wring the spit out of her clothes when she got home from school. One of her teachers wouldn't even touch anything that she had touched. When she would hand her homework to her, the teacher would take a pencil and slide the paper toward her, grade it, and slide it back with the pencil.

Our family has a rich history with many in it that made black and white history.

  16. i think there are A LOT of things we can say about race relations in America but i am proud to say that few (less than...2?) countries have done more comprehensive, policy-making, & instituted some educational awareness, around race than the US. it certainly doesn't mean we still don't have a ways to go. it just means that i'd rather live here than most other places.

the Aussies are some of the worst offenders... although to be fair, MANY countries could 'jockey' for that position! but i do know when those white folks started their lil' "prison colony" in AU - the Aboriginal populations was over half a million, but by the 1900s it's was less than a little over 90,000.

so considering the Aussies reputation on their own race-relations (you'd never know they have the 2nd largest Chinese population outside of China), i'm not surprised that this happened. let's not forget the Sydney Olympics where the Aboriginal distance runner who upon winning a medal attempted to extract a formal apology from her government for its treatment of her people. that request was denied.

as for Connick - there's a lesson to be learned about the perceptions and understanding of Black culture BEYOND US borders. compared to places like AU or Columbia where Black folks (Aboriginals are identified as Black) we've made some progress. i just think it's time we started calling other countries out on that crap! France found that out the hard way, when 2/3 summers ago all their "colored folks" started rioting. of course, we have our "wonderful" Spaniards who threw BANANAS at a British futbol team that had Black players. so it's easy for other countries to make fun or critique of 'us' cause they haven't done the hard work themselves.

that's why we have cool kats like Connick and they have... Mel Gibson. although now we just shoot ourselves in the foot w/ people like: Alan Keyes or Larry Elders, MLK's kids, the Guinea gov't...

Anon 1: Emmett Till is your comparison argument?! i didn't know you were a) forensic scientist b) a psychic & somehow knew the 'level' of suffering for either victims?! i don't know if you missed the "memo" but they both died in horrible ways. hatred in ANY color should be unacceptable! that 'lowest denominator' shit where you "blame" everything on a group is lazy thinking & way too predictable. thanks FN for tellin' ANON to take that crap somewhere else.

word, that's the difference between being a revolutionary nationalist vs. a cultural nationalist(or porkchop nationalists like the Black Panther's used to call them.) Every Black rebel at some point, because of the nature of the specific racist oppression we have historically been subjected too, goes through a cultural nationalist phase where all things white = bad and all things Black = good, it's almost necessary but it is equally as necessary to make sure we don't remain stuck there. Whoever is down with liberation is down with me, whoever is down with oppression needs to be confronted with justice.

It is interesting how the world puts more pressure on the West to allow massive immigration (often to the detriment of social and economic stability). As well as to be more multicultural, but doesn't apply the same standard to other countries to the nearly same degree. You never hear anyone bitching about Japan's incredibly strict immigration policy. Or the racial attitudes in Asia, period. Much less South America.

It isn't just that Connick stood up, it's how he said it: "we in this country..." and he wasn't talking about just white people. He was staking a claim for all Americans. He's wrong of course as a matter of fact [plenty of folks are fine with cooning], but it was a much more powerful statement than if he'd said "I'm white and I find this offensive."

    ReplyDelete
  28. Greetings from Australia everyone. Check out my blog for some Australian perspectives on this issue.

For the record, I was really impressed by Harry Connick Jr - he spoke not a word out of place. He wasn't rude, just said politely what needed to be said.

Of course, many Australians have reacted negatively to him; they think "we'll I'm not offended by it, so therefore its not offensive."

Our history with black people is a bit different to America's (although just as shameful), which is why a lot of people just don't get what is wrong with that skit.

But understand that a great many of us down here DO recognise how messed up that act was, and are amazed that it went to air. So don't assume that it represents us as a whole nation.

    Peace.

well, whilst i might give H.C. a B minus for his Aussie down under commentary, i would not go so far as to embrace him as a card carrying member for racial harmony within the 48 or so partials of craved out native american terrain called amerika. Afterall, it is far easier for certain folks to be far away from home base and poo-poo another culture's exposure of their homeland bad side than to actually invoke a similar tenet within their own house. I dont know H.C. but i am just wondering if he is from the big easy, did he make similar overtures at his own government in the months to years post the Katrina demise or was he silent? Is this all a personal opportunity for H.C. to covet some honour or prize in the post election of Mr. Obama "white folks are suddenly absolved glee" that is sweeping the nation like a flu pandemic? Let us first assess our comrade's track record domestically and internationally before offering the olive branch i would say?

Funny though, poo-pooing the Aussies [well, the Brits set this Australia up as a penal colony way back so most of the non native imported offenders were not of for what of better words...suitable qualities. As such, Aussie racism rears its ugly head lots of times....like a couple of summers back with the Whites and Lebanese/Arabs going at it due the the whites desire for a whites only beach or something]could cause a problem with the State Department but maybe not since the current Secretary of State got a bit testy and rude with Africans recently on her bit of ring around the continent. Imagine being so disrespectful to your guest all because of a simple misunderstood or comprehended question from a kid. Geez..

I can't believe how messed up some of the Aussie comments are. Some are like "don't come back...we don't like you anyway" along with every kind of defensive and stupid we see from certain folks here in the US. Am I wrong in thinking Harry was pretty damn polite even in his disapproval? He didn't call them names but he didn't back down either. How can you be mad about that? HCJr was mortified and he still had the presence of mind to think to himself 'some of this is cultural' and be diplomatic about telling them how offensive it was and yet a lot are acting as though he crucified the entire nation.

President Obama has, 1.dropped Missle Defense (which was creating hostility in Eastern Europe and Russia and escalating the nuclear arms threat).... 2. Convened and began action at the UN on complete global nuclear disarmament (including getting the Iranians to the table and getting them to agree to stop enrichment of fisile materials)Announced the US will FINALLY sign on to the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty AND the Fisile Materials Treaty. Went to Europe, Africa and Latin America and walked away with improved relations....

On the down side, which DOES make me scratch my head... Afghanistan. What he is doing there will not create peace and security.

First to commence, as my mother would say, President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize?? WTF? Don't get me wrong, I love me some POTUS Obama, but the PEACE PRIZE? I thought it was an Onion story, but it seems to be true. What was the committee thinking? What criteria are they using? Makes no sense, but at least I'll have the unadulterated pleasure of watching wingnut heads asplode.
About Harry Connick, Jr.: Way to be a MAN! I know people will be rushing to claim that his Southern preacher act was supposed to be "blackface," but these are people who know exactly nothing about Southern preachers, white or black. Also, too, (I'm channeling Sarah Palin here) there is a vast difference between "blackface" and impersonation: one is grotesque mockery, the other is not.

  62. there should be 3 things to note about the O-Man winning that Nobel Prize:

whether you think he deserves it or not knowing just how much it'll BURN like acid inside some of these wing-nuts should give you some pleasure -- it does for me.

2nd point: apparently he was nominated right after he was sworn in. the nomination was based on the election, his movement-making, & his inspiring 'hope.' so to be fair - if it was just based on that, then i can see why he was selected. i'm just not sure what the process is once the selection process begins: do they just look at what happened BEFORE he was nominated or do they look at BEFORE & UP-TO decision-time?

3rd: w/ that said, i SINCERELY thought that Nobel Prize was about... peace. so i think that any heads-of-state that's involved in a war (Afghanistan) they should automatically be disqualified because it's the ANTITHESIS of... peace.

nevertheless, perhaps this will put pressure on him to pull out of Afghanistan sooner rather than later. & i think i'm a little too pleased w/ how upsetting this is for the wing-nuts

Obama winning the peace prize is a joke. Yes Obama inherited a big mess that can't be cleaned up in 9 months, why not wait to see how things turn out before giving him this bogus prize. You're going to put him up there with MLK and Mother Theresa now? For what? It would be a slap in the face of everyone who ever actually worked for peace and justice if it weren't so amazingly transparent.

You guys have a short memory and pretend that America was hated because of George Bush. Please. The twin towers were destroyed in 2001. Bush was barely in office at that time. America was hated because of decades of pro-Isreal, pro-corporate, anti-black, brown, and yellow foreign policy. The same policies that Obama continues to adhere to. Where's the peace? I've yet to see it.

Guess what? The world still hates you. And rightfully so. This award is all about Europeans and their progeny attempting to project the idea that things have changed. They haven't. It's another way to confuse the masses and it's working to perfection.

Yeah, I'll give Obama a chance, a chance to prove me right yet again.

  67. So I wake at the normal 5:45 and hear that we shot a rocket at to moon and after less than 9 months on the job, Barak H. Obama is this year's Noble Peace Prize Laurate. WTF?!

Weird stuff. I personally don't think he should have gotten it -- he hasn't been office long enough for the ink to dry on his first paycheck. And he has any level of integrity, Obama is probably scratching his head too.

But, the Prize was founded by a rich old white man trying to ammend for the creation of dynamite, so it is what is. And to honest, there have been weirder nominations for that prize in my life time than say the science or literature prizes. (Though literature is also in question, since I've always thought that Toni Morrison's 'Sula' and 'The Bluest Eye' much better novels than the head scratchers 'Beloved' & 'Jazz'.)

If Clinton can win the Peace Prize in '98 for essentially hosting a Kosher Barbecue at Camp David and Hilter was up for nomination in '38, then O man winning the peace award for inspiring people to give a crap about the world ain't a bad thing.

He got, its done. For all the wingnuts and mau-mau types who declare Obama as the Great Satan, stop hating and get over it. To liberals, clear thinkers and the mau-mau types, its up to us to pressure him to live up to the ideal the award is supposed to proclaim.

To the Wingnuts (I'm looking at you Constructive Feedback and Mr. R.), get over it -- Obama won and McCain lost because Smirk was a twit and his running mate was a faux-Bible thumping, hillbilly megalomaniac who thought a tight tush and redneck speak could win an election.

Maybe you have vision problems but Connick was not in blackface during this skit.

The skit was about hustling preachers and Connick was mocking the classic southern white Jimmy Swaggart types.

Just like the old skit on "In Living Color" where Damon Wayans and Jim Carrey played the money grubbing preachers Rev Ed Cash & Rev Dr. Carl Pethos.

    Nice try though.

LOL@ at the dishonesty. I love how whenever somebody points out that something is racist there is always some lame and weak attempt to dodge that by saying "BUT SO-AND-SO DOES IT TOO". The same thing happened with Don Imus where his defenders went "BUT RAPPERS DO IT TOO" as if no ones ever complained about the self-hating BS that is promoted through some rappers by the corporate media. I guess I can't blame them for not knowing seeing as how such stories conveniently never seem to appear on the so-called news.

They want the world to accept their free speech, but when someone has the nerve to act against their stupid bullshit and use free speech to say "You're not funny, you racist moron" they are the first ones to cry "POLITICAL CORRECTNESS". It's even worse when people play the "Oh, I/We didn't KNOW any better card" or the "Oh, they're not white so therefore it's no longer racist" cards. I keep hearing that the people involved in this skit weren't black and I'm like "Hey, maybe a US troop of wannabe comedians should perform in yellow face/brown face complete with stereotypes just to see what happens."

Maybe Obama got the Nobel Prize for deliberately screwing up America by hiring cheats, creeps and whatever to administrate over American citizens. He gave the entire US treasury to some foreign bankers (what happened to the Wall Street oversight), he panders to another country that practices eugenic racism, he main work as president has been to give back to his campaign supporters, he hasn't ended Iraq, Afganistan and is drone messing in Pakistan.

Iran will be next before he runs for his second term (gotta get that AIPAC money), he made sure HBCs got defunded, no vouchers for DC schools despite coming from Chicago where 30 kids have died going to school so far,no transparency in any bills, lobbyists all over the place even in the Food and Drug Administration (there should be more scientists there and less lawyers), can I go on.

Pretty soon Queen Elizabeth will knight him and then there will be no doubts as to WHO he's working for.

I don't think you could give proper explanation about why white folk in black face coonin wouldn't be offensive, because it would only point out the plain and strong evidence of hypocrisy in the nature of your comment/logic.

Now I see why Australia is labeled 'The Alabama of the Pacific'.

Oh about the racism in Australia. Shit keeps popping up because it's happening. I read about beating incidents against Arabs and Indians in Australia that the media never fails to obscure (WHOOPS) but Australia is the country of 'OH WE DONT DO THINGS LIKE THAT!' and home of the 'WE TREAT EVERYONE EQUAL.'

Same thing happening in Europe where they throw in bananas when African descent players join the game.

Same thing happening in France where they systemetically put down Africans and Arabs in the same society.

Same thing happening in Russia where White Supremacists beat the crap out of non White races.

Same thing happening in the US where the KKK still marches around as if it's STILL 19th century Antibellum south. But only now they hold high offices and call themselves republican or teabaggers.

My point is there are still racism going on. Based on person's skin color and Austraila is NO exception. Hell there's still human slaves and genocides going on in some parts of the world.

Bringing injustice and awareness of others' unfair treatment to people is never fruitless.

That needs to be reiterated. Kissinger was hardly a revolutionary peace maker either--should he have turned down the prize too. Josef Stalin was nominated—who may have murdered over 60 million people. On the Nobel Peace Prize website, Brandt even nominated Adolf Hitler—in 1939, when the final solution was in full swing then. The nomination however was withdrawn, but the fact that he casted a vote says it all. So give me a f*ckin break.

And as for the Aussies, all of them are doctors, which isn’t surprising since they did harm by being utter fools,(I know of a lot who have serious coke and heroin addictions so those "doctors" must have been high already), and a couple of these dancing fools were Indian. Which begs the questions, weren’t a lot of East Indians up in arms to how Australians were beating up Indian students, but you have some of these Indian Doctors who find it perfectly OK to be in Black face. Whatever.

I'm not from Australia. What I was trying to point out is whenever you call out a racist on their behavior there is this tendency to make excuses. I used some past examples from the US not to say "See America is just as racist!" but to say "They want free speech to go one way. That is, we can be as racist as you want and you should just stand there and take it. If you point out that out, then we'll start whining about so-called Political Correctness." Don't think I'm defending the idiots who did this lameass skit. I mentioned Don Imus and guys like that not to justify what they did but to point out the annoying tendency of racists around the world to play the "Well we didn't know it was racist" card. I've experienced it first hand and it always disgusts me.

Today something wonderful happened. Republicans admitted that global warming is a problem, escalating troops in Afghanistan is a bad idea, and the public option would ensure that millions of Americans without insurance could finally have an alternative for health care. They suddenly cared that Obama has not achieved these goals yet, ignoring that part of the reason it hasn't happened is due to their constant attempts at lying and fearmongering along with their need to protect their corporate sponsors. For a few minutes, they actually joined the rest of the world in reality. Then, they realized that Obama won something and got extra butthurt and mad over it, providing comedy gold for all on the Internet.

I wonder how they would feel if blacks or other minorities did that to them and painted white faces or made ridiculous offensive cartoons of so-called representation of their features.

Nevertheless, there tends to be a history of whites ridiculing all minorities in this way. They did, have done, and do it to the Chinese, Indians, Hispanics, and every other minority that exist. Their history is full of labeling others to make themselves feel superior. It's almost as if they feel that all minorities should be bowing down and praising whites image instead of God. Smh!

humm it went from HC and minstrels shows down under to O man and a peace prize..

Here is a reflection... on Olso2X since O gets to go right back to the same place where the olympics bid failed recently. A nobel laureate gets all kinds of calls for honorarium chats so it can be viewed as unemployment insurance should he be a one term elected official in this regard.

But, as an African, i must say.. O man has only blown hot air about the prospects of peace with no actual delivery.. A better choice would have been either brother Thabo Mbeki and/or brother Kofi Annan. Both of these African gents have posted actually peace results. In fact, brother Annan negotiated the post election violent that was Kenya in 2007. When Kenya was on fire and the pangas were flying, O man didnt even get on the plane and go make certain that his materal Kenyan grandmother was well protected for running for office [to the best of my knowledge and i got a problem with that] at least Kofi brokered a power sharing agreement that led to a joint parties cabinet and quelled the violence for the most part. Where was O man then? Annan during his UN tenure tried and failed in many a instance since a black man trying to become a sense of humanity to a most white man international concepts of law is a ludicious thing from the outset but Rwanda, Bosni and other minor problem areas were his some of his successes.

Until such time that O-man can get the Israelis[formerly South Africans] to come clean on their nuclear arm program and dismantle it complete, he has not achieve anything worthy of a peace prize. And since a whole lot of US tax dollars goes to that Israeli nuclear program, well you can ask yourself were you ICBM silo is at?

    Well Field,

you rightly state that "some of us try so hard to do just the opposite", in fact films like Big Momma and all the late Eddie Murphy stereotyping shit about black Americans show how serious we want to be taken in the media.
I wonder how is it possible that although some rich black entertainers have the means to make films about black history they waste money on films where they keep the stereotypical image of black people still alive.

what's the point of the comments?

    to add to a discussion?

    scream, rant your opinions?

    name calling?
point out only the negative aspects of life?

whatever it is it's just a waste of time-listening and debate are dead as proven by the comments

  124. Hey chill out Americans.... black people are all right - in fact here in Australia we like them so much we think everyone should have one.

Actually - that was just to get you losers to bite.

The story was incorrectly reported; and so you fucked that up badly and then went on to have an opinion about it....

It was a dance routine about Micheal Jackson being as white as a refrigerator and coming from a black family......

And just because people dress up as other people - men as women, women as men, people with all sorts of colored skins dressing up as all sorts of other people with different colored skins...

Doesn't mean that it gives idiots like you the permission to exercise your self righteous indignation about it all....

    Looser.
