Pastor, please don't shoot, you might hit the usher.

"The beloved of the LORD shall dwell in safety by him; and the LORD shall cover him all the day long.~Deuteronomy 33:12"

That verse from the good book should end with the words: I give my humble servant a Glock to protect thee with so that he can covereth thee better.

Seriously, WTF? I know it's bad in Motown, but preachers with guns?
The following is from the AP:

"DETROIT - The Rev. Lawrence Adams teaches his flock at the Westside Bible Church to turn the other cheek. Just in case, though, the 54-year-old retired police lieutenant also wears a handgun under his robe.

Adams is one of several Detroit clergymen who have taken to packing heat in the pulpit. They have committed their lives to a man who preached nonviolence and told followers to love their enemies. But they also say it's up to them to protect their parishioners in church.

"As a pastor, I'm referred to as a shepherd," Adams said. "Shepherds have the responsibility of watching over their flock. Do I want to hurt somebody? Absolutely not!"
Responding to a break-in at his church on a Sunday evening, Adams surprised a burglar carrying out a bag of loot and shot the man in the abdomen after the man swung the bag at him.

The burglar survived - for which Adams is grateful - but the pastor said he could have been hurt or killed if he had not been armed.

Detroit had the nation's highest homicide rate last year among cities of at least 500,000 residents. The city has been losing manufacturing jobs for decades, and these days about one in four working-age residents is without a job.

The northwest Detroit neighborhood surrounding Adams' church isn't one of the city's most dangerous. But there have been many recent reports of crimes in the area, including four burglaries, three auto thefts, one armed robbery, and four assaults, including one with intent to murder.

"It's getting worse because of the economy," Adams said. "People are out of work and feel they have to provide for their families."

Prior to 2000, anyone who wanted to carry a concealed weapon in Michigan had to show a need to do so. Now, gun owners simply have to pass a stringent background check and complete eight hours of handgun training.

"I get people from all walks of life, including pastors," said Rick Ector, owner of Rick's Firearm Academy in Detroit. "But it's not anything specific to pastors. Detroit is not a very safe place."
Michigan allows pastors to decide if someone registered to carry a handgun can do so for protection inside churches. "'

Oh lawd, pastor! Seriously, what ever happened to turning the other cheek? I guess with these urban terrorist running around that is not an option. So protect your flock you must. Oh yes, and let's not forget the offering plate. [Story]

A thought occurred to me when the pastor mentioned that more people are out of work and they are getting desperate that perhaps that him and his parishioners could help these people who are most in need. Somehow the downtroden must remind moral despite the fact that their basic necessary such food and shelter are not being met because of job lost. Humans, we are so moral when it is conventient and talking about protecting sheep. How searching and caring for those who are lost? Where is the compassion? The golden rule doing unto others as you would have others to you seems to missing in the pastor's homily. I guess shooting them is easier to do than the latter. Damn it is hard to be good.

In Detroit, that pastor was smart to have a gun where crime and lack of jobs are at an all-time high among Blacks. He might have been dead without it.

Bullshit. For Christians, it has only one meaning and that is the way Christ meant it. Any other way is an egomaniac's justification for retaliation and revenge.

Yes granny, the rule could have a duplicitious meaning when the person uses it to his or her convenience. Actually, the golden rule is not exclusive to christianity, but you can find the rule in Buddhism and Confusim both religions in existence before Christianity. I think it is a good rule for anyone to follow to treat people well as you want them to treat you. However, as I wrote earlier, being good is hard work. It is not easy to be good. Very few people are good for nothing. Being good needs to have an incentive or elase what would be the point. Being good for the sake of being good is an old concept, you cannot have faith in it if you are not willing to practice it. I use the word you in generally speaking ease.

I am going to say this, we really do not what Jesus meant since he did not write anything and the writers did not pen the gospels until approx. 75 to 80 CE which anywhere between 30 to 40 after Jesus' death. To add, Buddha and Socrates also did not have writings either, so in way we are left to interupt pretty much hear say from secondary sources at best, but does not mean that the topic of philosphy and religion is fascinating to me. What can I said, I am geek for humanities.

@hennasplace -- You're so right about how hard it is to be good. Recently, I've been following a criminal case that's inflamed the community because of it's horrific nature. By all accounts, the man on trial deserved to get death for what he did, an eye for an eye makes a logical sense and is easy to view as just but the command for Christians and for some other religions is to grant mercy even when you'd be justified to retaliate.

Many professed Christians abandoned that principle and the explicit example of Jesus when he intervened to stop a lawful execution (the cast the first stone story) and openly called for death rather than Life without parole. It was sad to see not just the calls for death but the absolute bloodlust. The crime cried out emotionally for death and revenge and the vast majority heeded that emotional call rather than the call to be good. In such a situation it really is hard to be good.

Faith has been modernized. Faith was meant to be praticed. Faith is to trust, and we need to pratice in order to be realized. I have faith in good, but does not mean that I have practice being good in order to realize the state of goodness. It is something to think about.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Well, J and Henna don't forget that Paul said, when I try to do good evil is always present.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Henna I disagree with you about faith being modernize if I am understanding you correctly. The definition of faith hasn't changed. Trust and faith are two different things. One is sort of like believing in something you don't see. The other is unshakeable confidence in something.

Yes granny inner conflict is always a struggle for humans. Evil is always going to exist, but how do we deal with it becomes the question. In the case of pastor, having a gun underneath his robe is an easy solution, but problem only is that he only has so many bullets. This would mean that he needs to figure another way to resolve the problem.

Faith does mean trust in, fidelity to one's promises, along with that the word can be used as noun or verb. Having loyalty or allience is a part of faith as well. The word as several meanings depending on the context, and it what I mean that the meaning of the word has been modernized to take on a different meaning for us.

Field -- The Golden Rule is discussed more in depth here. It's also called the ethic of reciprocity.

    Some examples:
    Buddhism:
“ Putting oneself in the place of another, one should not kill nor cause another to kill. ”

“One who, while himself seeking happiness, oppresses with violence other beings who also desire happiness, will not attain happiness hereafter.

    Confucianism:

“ Never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself. ”

    — Confucius, Analects XV.24 (tr. David Hinton)

    Islam:

“Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you.”

    — Muhammad, The Farewell Sermon

    Judaism:

“That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow. That is the whole Torah; the rest is the explanation; go and learn.”

    Buddhism:
“ Putting oneself in the place of another, one should not kill nor cause another to kill. ”

This has to do with a Buddhist Precept that is equivalent to the Commandment "Thou Shalt Not Kill."

There is no equivalent golden rule in Buddhism but there are Precepts.

However, in Judaism, there was a golden rule long before Christ said it. A great sage and rabbinic priest by the name of Hillel said,

"What you find hateful to you, do not do to another." This was the first Golden Rule. Christ followed hundreds of years later with his.

"People are out of work and feel they have to provide for their families."

Yeah, right. While there may be a few who are robbing, raping and murdering to provide for their families, that is not the case for the majority. The people here do what they do because ther are ghetto thugs who would kill their mothers for a dollar or a pair of cheap plastic eye glasses.

"... perhaps that him and his parishioners could help these people who are most in need ..."

Again, yeah right. The so-called ministers here don't come out of their churches into the community and are NOT INVOLVED. They have to pry the last social security dollar out of the hands of the little old ladies because he needs another Rolex and the wife needs another diamond tiara.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anonymous1:12 AM

@anon 12.43 -- Check the link. That's where the quotes come from and there's further explanation and criticism in terms of reciprocity. The first portion of the Buddhist command "putting oneself in another's place" is the parallel they're drawing from rather than the clause that contains the command not to kill. The debate of whether or not there's an universal ethic doesn't center around literalism or literal statements which is why the Buddhist statements have been cited by philosophers, critics, and authors arguing for reciprocity being close to universal.

Well, that kills Henna's theory on how pastors can make a better Detroit. It's easy for folks a long way from Detroit to know how to fix things in their minds. Unfortunately, it too good, and too advanced for humans and a world without virtue..

  33. Everyone has the right to defend themselves, even Christians.

Detroit is the most dangerous city in America.

Times are tough and crime will expand but that doesn't mean that anyone should give their live to some criminal. Most homicides in Detroit are not being solved. Rapes are up. Many people don't even bother to report break-ins anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I agree with Detroit Sam @ 1:02. I'm familiar with a specific mega church in Motown and believe me, the church and it's pastor don't give a rat about it's people. I find the behavior of this church's leadership to be the rule in America, rather than the exception. These days you're basically paying 10%++++ of your income for Christian flavored motivational speaking. I also concur with Hennasplace @10:22. This pastor carries a gun because he chooses to do so. I'm willing to bet he is as self-serving as the majority of the clergy. That said, I don't begrudge him the right to defend himself or his family and friends. I support 2nd Amendment rights. There are way too many sociopaths and psychopaths in all levels of society to not have your own personal defense plan whether it includes firearms or not.

In these economic times, just save your money or if you are feeling charitable, donate to someone truly in need. I don't mean the leeches, dishonest, or chronically irresponsible. Please just read your Bible for yourself. It's written such that a fool can understand it.

  35. I am troubled by the notion--espoused here by what we generally assume to be full-grown, accountable adults--that there needs be an incentive (with the implication of material value) to inspire goodness of behavior and choice...Lord knows, that was true for me when I was a small child coming up, but maturity and fullness of being means recognizing those subtler rewards. I am good--as always as it is humanly possible for me to be--because there is peace for me and mine, in rippling circles outward from me when I am. If that is what we as a species are failing to "get," then I gotta say, it's about time we all just grow the eff UP already...

That is not practical walking around strapped as he still has the mindset of a police officer and not a pastor of a church. Suppose he does get into a situation where does shot someone, people associated with that person can retaliate against the church members. Then it would not practical if church member get caught in the crossfire. My grandmother told me that is more than one way to skin a cat, and the question become what is the best way to do it. The problem of joblesness and poverty will still exist if he shoots a couple of people. Have we not learned that the cowboy mentality does work? Does Bush come to mind?

Detroit is extremely dangerous. Just over the weekend a homeless man used a knife to threaten a customer at a restaurant owned by a candidate for city council. However the man being threatened had a legal gun and used it.

  67. Hi there,

There are many ministers who have paid security guards but I didn't realize that there are preachers who are carrying guns into the pulpit for protection.

I think that before they resort to those measures that they need to truly look at other methods of security.

The church setting is NOT entirely safe in many cities and people in the pews have shown up in church shooting. So I can't say that it will never happen.

As a minister, I don't think that I shouldn't ever buy a gun but I would not carry one into the church. I do think that a security team is necessary though.

    Peace, blessings and DUNAMIS!

Compassion is the foundation of Buddhism. It is defined as a wish for others to have happiness and causes of happiness, and a wish for others to have less suffering and the causes of suffering. Suffering is a very common state of being, caused by the existence of selfish desires. Living a good life puts these desires into their proper perspective, reducing suffering, and increasing happiness.
Permitting a robber to escape with his haul might not be a compassionate activity, but neither would shooting him in the belly. The middle way would probably include encouraging the robber to change his ways, and reporting him to the police if that didn't work.
Put the needs of others before the needs of self.
This could include ensuring that the robber was stopped before he robbed again, even if this meant endangering onself. One could certainly argue about the best methods to accomplish this.
Compassion could mean acknowledging and forgiving the theft, and making a gift of the loot. That might cause a major shift in attitude of the burglar, which would have a great impact on the suffering of the robber, and all his potential future victims.
Or, compassion could dictate that the pastor put the needs of the community before the needs of the burglar, and take him out before he harms more people.
A simple question without a simple answer. Such is life.

The Buddha emphasized Wisdom and Compassion as the way to end ignorance and suffering.

Wisdom says, "Have Compassion, but don't be a fool."

Without Wisdom, compassion is just an emotion built on pity, which harms more than it helps.

It is really about the larger picture than the thug. I mean there are some mean-spirited and evil people in the world that you need to be kept away from society at large. I am talking about what the Paster mentioned in his homily about people who are desperate and who are without alternatives. Unemployment rates are getting higher and there is rise people going hungry in the United States. We can find hungry people among the enlisted me in the service and half of them are eligible for food stampes. There is a book called "Growing Up Empty: The Hunger Epidemic in America" by Loretta Schwartz-noble that writes about the problem. "The Working Poor: Invisible in America" written by David K. Shipler and Detroit is a perfect of example of what is going on the country now. Then there is the book "Class Matters" from a series of New York Times articles from 2005. Then there is one of my favorite writings from Barbara Ehrenreich "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America."

I remember when Chris Rock talked about how he loved black people, but hated niggers. I knew from that moment what he was talking about and something that is really not discussed among black people and that is class. Classism is a problem we have within the black community and we do like to talk about it. I had a discussion with my cousin who believed that is a person's fault who remains in poverty, in fact it is their fault that they are poor. We do not even bother to take a look at some generational factors of poverty, but details details. Poor people are not very well like because they are reminder of something we do not want to be. This is generally speaking, we find poor people pernicious and ask why cannot improve their condition and lot in life. However, it doesn't occur to use that a poor person living in Marks, Mississippi is anyway from 50 to 100 miles of work, medical facility, and a decent educational choices. But somehow we have this bright-sidedness of optimism that everyone can do be like Oprah which is not true because let's face, she got lucky in being at the right place at the right time. So we have to find some realistic ways to pull these people out of poverty.

I knew from that moment what he was talking about and something that is really not discussed among black people and that is class. Classism is a problem we have within the black community and we do like to talk about it."

    EXACTLY.

I just will not accept that violence and dysfunction are "black" problems.

The black middle class has the same values and behavior as their peers of any color.

What is different for blacks is that we are the only group of people who are defined and stigmatized by the worst of us.

And when this nonsense is perpetuated by some of OUR OWN PEOPLE, it makes it doubly hard to deal with.

Holde--"4. Black men have a warped notion of masculinity"

It is true. Black men are victims of the John Wayne syndrone, which they learned at an early age:

1.never apologize or admit when they are wrong(Field, are you reading?)
    2.never surrender, never give up
    3.never ask a stupid question
4.men shake hands, they don't hug
5.never let them see your weaknesses
6.hold yourself up by your bootstraps
7.raising a kid is the job of a woman
    8.control your woman

All of the above are the direct opposite of what it means to be a man:

1)big boys do cry, 2)a man apologizes when he is wrong, 3)real men say they don't know when they don't know w/o feeling stupid(they don't call someone else stupid for asking a question), 4)a man isn't afraid to ask for help, 5)a man respects a woman as his equal, 6)men are partners with wives in raising their children emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually-they do not neglect, abuse or abandon their children.

Unfortunately, black men are a long way from manhood, and it has very little to do with educational level or intellect. This does not bode well for generations of sons to come.

Thanks for your comment, Holde. You give me hope that maybe there might be other black men with heart and awareness.

  161. an eye for an eye makes a logical sense and is easy to view as just but the command for Christians and for some other religions is to grant mercy even when you'd be justified to retaliate.<<<

An eye for an eye is not about retaliation, but having the punishment fit the crime, e.g., not meting a death sentance against someone who stole a loaf of bread. In Jewish Scripture, this edict applies exactly to justice, not retaliation or vengeance.

there doesn't seem to be a real movement right now to address this. i think it would be a good idea to try and attack the problem from both ends, for young children, a future, for older children and young adults, some kind of different approach, i dk what.

i don't think constantly blaming the President for these problems is the answer, but I do remember reading his book and i think he said it would probably take a decade of concentrated efforts to make any kind of change.

  166. Back on the topic at hand -- it says something when Black preachers feel they need to pack heat to protect Black women from their own Black sons. Wow, we have a long way to go. Now, the question I have is how often does these ministers engage young Black men before they said "Screw it, I'm getting a .44"? If they're anything like typical Black ministers -- not much. As someone pointed out, they claim to follow a simple carpenter who hung out with dock workers, lepers and prostitutes. But some how, too many drive Bentley while crackheads reign supreme. Its a wonder I still go to church.

And as an aside, I agree with kathy. Blaming Obama for all our problems isn't doing anything. Hell, the first thing the man said when he was elected last years was that he can't do everything. He's just one man -- he's not Jesus.

Sitting on our collective behinds and awaiting Mighty Whitey, the 'next MLK' or the Rapture while Rome burns is what got Black folks into the spot we're in right now.

  178. I have to say that I am surprised at all the anti Christian rhetoric on this thread. The Black church was the cornerstone of our culture and has saved our people from implosion! Sure there are charlatans but they are in every profession, across every walk of life. When religion is good though, it can serve to uplift and motivate.

AB, I am saddened that your religious experience was so heavily anti gay. In my church, I never once heard anyone gay bash. Hell my old church has housing for seniors and AIDS patients. You ought to find a church like that.

I believe that the preacher is wrong to carry a gun in the pulpit. HOWEVER, if he is on the church grounds by himself, he ought to carry a gun OR have his crew of deacons carry guns to protect the church grounds and themselves.

In the early eighties after crack ravished my old neighborhood in East Oakland, some thugs went onto the premises of my Grandpa's church and robbed him at gunpoint. One of his deacons chased the man down, waved a gun in his face and acquired what was stolen. The deacon did not kill the robber, and if I recall correctly, my Grandfather prayed for the guy who robbed him.

If you are in a dangerous land, you must walk with the understanding that you are always in danger. It is not wrong for people to carry guns or other weapons if they will provide them with protection. I've been victimized by violent crime on two separate occasions in my life. I can honestly say that if I had a gun in those circumstances, I may not have been victimized in the same way.

People ought to use common sense when they handle guns though. Canadians have wayyyyyy more guns on average than Americans but their crime rates are a lot lower than ours. Why is that? I think it's because they are nicer, have stronger communities and are a smaller nation; they are still small enough that neighbors say hi to one another....

  183. Filled Negro you are clearly IGNORANT of your Black History.

I point you to the venerable AME Bishop Henry McNeal Turner. The official "Preacher With Some Firepower"

    http://functionalculture.blogspot.com/2007/12/henry-mcneal-turner-my-favority-ame.html

You see Filled Negro - there was a time in this nation when Black folks didn't have iron bars on our windows to protect us from Skibop and RayRay who was attempting to steal our flat screen televions while we were at work.

Instead it was the KLAN who raised our houses.

Conscious brother Turner saw that an UNARMED BLACK COMMUNITY was a VICTIMIZED BLACK COMMUNITY.
He told all of those who were in the sound of his voice to OBTAIN ARMS to protect their family and property from marauders.

HERE IS THE IRONY FILLED NEGRO - where as today we have Street Pirates who are flaunting the Second Amendment suppressive laws that you support and thus supplying illegal guns that will end up killing a BLACK MAN........these Black people back in the day ALSO HAD AN ILLEGAL GUN RUNNING OPERATION but for drastically different purposes.

Filled Negro - the WHITE STORE OWNERS conspired to keep guns and ammo out of the hands of BLACK PEOPLE. Absent bullet proof vests at the time - what better way for a Klansman store owner to save his own hide than to not have to worry about getting shot by a Black man who could defend his own property?

In response to the ban - Turner and other Blacks started GUN RUNNING. They would bring guns into these areas and trade them directly with the Black folks. The TARGET of these guns, unlike today, was ANY WHITE PERSON WHO DARED TRY TO DRAG A FAMILY MEMBER OUT OF THE HOUSE to lynch him.

The gun was a deterrent to the Klan.

A COMMUNITY OF GUN TOTING PEOPLE who planned to stand up and DEFEND what is their own PROVED EVEN MORE EFFECTIVE.

Filled Negro - just think about how this scenario varies so greatly from today in North Philly. They have their NOMINAL freedom and "self determination" in theory. Yet it is their CONSCIOUSNESS OF PURPOSE that has vacated them.

Fear not though Filled Negro. These are solid Democratic voters in North Philly. Since this is your primary goal for them - you are quite content with their loss of consciousness.

Do you ever find it strange that in their present LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS they support so many policies that YOU SUPPORT? What should we draw about you by inference?

You show me a time in urban America when there was not crime.

Just read Malcolm X autobiography you idiot and you will see that there were crime plagued ghettoes in America during the damn 1930s.

There was never any Paradise Lost in America for black folks.

What you black conservatives are implying with the help of your white right massas is that everything went to hell in Black America after the Civil Rights movement.

Also when i had the gun i was less able to see alternatives to resolving a situation, and for some reason i got into more altercations when i got the gun than i did before when i did not have it.

That being said i still have a gun at home for home defence (its the Britsh spelling i am product of a Brit adapted educational system.) but i don't carry one on my person.
What you black conservatives are implying with the help of your white right massas is that everything went to hell in Black America after the Civil Rights movement.
