On what could be a historic week here in A-merry-ca, and on a day when his O ness is stomping in middle A-merry-ca for support, I know that I should be blogging about health insurance reform; but I can't. (BTW, at this point why can't we just scrap the whole damn thing and allow every uninsured A-merry-can under 65 a chance to buy into Medicare? They could compete with priv.... Ahh never mind, it makes too much damn sense.) So where was I? Oh yeah, sorry, I can't blog about his O ness and health care tonight. Tonight I have a bigger fish.... ahhm... person to fry.
So let's talk about 42 year old Donna Simpson, shall we? Donna weighs 602 pounds, and she is trying to eat her way into the record as the world's fattest woman. That would require Donna to tip the scales at a whopping 1,000 pounds. To do that, Donna will have to pack in 12,000 calories per day which will cost her about $750 per week in grocery money...I swear you folks over in Jersey. *shaking head*
Anywhooo, some are speculating that this could be a form of "suicide by eating", but I doubt it. Donna seems happy. She has a boyfriend who loves her very much, and she even has a website up where some of you sick people can pay to watch her eat. And.......-oh lawd, I hate to even go here-but I am looking at Donna's pics from this article, and I am guessing Donna's significant other is one of my cousins.....oh yes, I just confirmed it.......ahhm...ahhm....ahhm...ok, for the first in a very long time I think I am speechless. Sorry folks, I just saw a pic of Donna and Phillippe and....
Anywhoo, I believe in individual freedoms, so Donna go ahead and knock yourself out. Still, I am looking at the beautiful little girl in those pics -who I think is your daughter- and checking out to leave her without a mom would not be cool. I know you say that you are healthy, but a thousand pounds is a thousand pounds. Come on girlfriend, give up the record, I don't think it's worth it.

ReplyDeleteBtw Field, I've been reading about eating healthy since the New Year. I've read Michael Pollan's books Food Rules, In Defense of Food, the Omnivore's Dilemma and Nina Planck's Real Food--What to Eat and Why. I have personally lost weight banishing processed foods from my diet.
The eating habits of most Americans are the reason behind the obesity epidemic and Type II diabetes that is plaguing this country, not to mention diet-related heart disease and cancer.
Pollan notes that the incidence of kids coming down with Type II diabetes is one in three for white kids and two in three for African American kids. Given that KFC and McDonald's are notorious in targeting African American kids with their high-fat, processed fare, I think that the issue of eating real food would be a significant topic here.
More and more people are noticing the importance of eating real unprocessed foods and choosing grass-fed and pastured meats. Chef Jamie Oliver has an upcoming series that targets one of the most unhealthiest cities in the U.S., urging residents there to eat healthy, unprocessed foods. The wingnuts don't want people to buy into medicare.
Republicans and conservatives have a notion that enabling people to purchase medicare, or participate in an public option infringes on the rights of the populace that, in their minds, pay the bills.
The "Real Americans" that are so free, so off the grid, that are such rugged individualists that they would rather die, without any sort of insurance, in a manner befitting a truly "free" person.
They have convinced usually old, usually rural, usually white people that somehow this dark stranger is on some sort of crusade to take over America by targeting health care providers. No, scratch that. insurance comapanies. I don't understand why anybody in this country can't see how the health care miasma has hastened the destruction of American manufacturing, that it will destroy all American small businesses, and it will eventually devastate the American economy.
If the government-run insurance is as inefficient and poorly run as people claim other government programs are, then private insurance won't have any problem competing with it. If it runs flawlessly and efficiently, then there's no reason that private insurance companies won't be able to copy the methodologies used to make it so successful. The claim that public option insurance will in and of itself destroy private insurance is an inaccurate and poorly supported claim.
Moreover, public option insurance will still be health insurance, which customers (i.e., US citizens) will have to pay for. People who are too stubborn to pay for current, private insurance either on their own or through a program offered by their employer still won't be covered if they're too stubborn to pay for the public option. This will still help millions of people, but odds are that like Jesus, it won't help people who won't help themselves. Remember, public option health care still isn't a guarantee of universal health care - and even that in and of itself isn't really "nanny state."
I always wonder what racists and bigots do when they are ill and are in need of medical attention. Do they hand the practitioners a questionnaire to weed out the undesirables? So when his wife went into the hospital to have their children did they insist on only White Christian medical professionals? When firefighters come to save their home are they going to stop each and everyone to verify their Caucasoid status?

A few posts ago I blogged about an Af. American all boys school in the Chi with a 100% graduation rate. I was hoping I would hear from him. Now had I written about a suburban school in his favorite neck of the woods (no pun intended), I am sure that he would have been all over it. But such is the nature of the wingnut. They know our history, know the nature of the forces that battle against blacks on a daily basis, know the myriad of ways the battle against black achievement is waged; social, economic, through the judicial system, in the workplace, know that we are in the process of building our networks to compete with those who want our downfall........and yet they side with an enemy that has fought our mere acceptance and viability at every point because they have been convinced that the devil has changed. ReplyDeleteMy daughter's friend Died three week's ago, she was Thirty, she was (Over Weight) but, she was full of life, her name was Aviance, she left a seven year old son behind, we are yet, Mourning her death!
Aviance lost her mother when she was (Thirteen) her father married again within a year, Aviance and her sister were left by the wayside! in other word's, they were (Neglected) I did what I could to help out, so did the Grandmother and aunt!
I am writing this because, Aviance was close to weighing (Four Hundred pound's) she was Ashamed of her self! she had a Beautiful face, but, she only wanted picture's taken of her face, Not her body, she was Not happy being the size she was, this young lady had to work a double Shift to make end's meet!
Aviance was preparing for the future, she had received her (income tax) she paid all her bill's up, she bought her son a new bedroom suite, she was alway's a happy person, but, she didn't take care of herself, she ate food's that were Detrimental to her health.
In the last month of February on a Sunday, my daughter went to Aviance house to eat (GUMBO) they talked about old time's, they laughed, they joked and they talked about the Future, at three O'clock that monday morning, my daughter received a phone call telling her Aviance had died in her sleep! my daughter was screaming, I was crying, it was Kaos in our house!
Aviance had a Seizure, Heart attack and a stroke in her sleep! this young lately was Stressed OUT from Life! she had the weight of the world on her shoulder's for Year's, and then she had the body weight! her poor heart couldn't take it, she couldn't get it together, she was so busy trying to live from day to day, she forgot to look after herself!
Her name was Aviance Lauderdale, and I will never forget this young lady, she had a soft kind voice*

Some black conservatives/moderates want only for the Black community to stand on their own feet; stop looking for excuses to fail, then go out and make their own way; without reaching for a ball or a microphone. This is why the story of the young men in Chicago is so refreshing, for these individuals have learned the merits of hard work. Hopefully the can continue in that vein and truly make a difference. ReplyDeleteThere is a hospital in my area that while it's not exclusively a childs hospital, it has a reputation for being geared towards childrens health.
One hears about the diabetes epidemic and when I had ocasion to do some work there a couple of years ago, I was just floored,floored, by the number of children with diabetes! Room after room after room, all with diabetic kids!!! Unbelievable! All ages, I saw from 5, yes I said 5 years on up to 18!
The thing that struck me was that almost all of them were thin kids, whose parents insisted they ate healthy! I only saw, out of so many kids, maybe 2 or 3 that were chubby!.
What do I think? (And I know I'm opening a can of worms here but)I think vaccines have something to do with it,because it's really the only common denominator that I found!
It's heartbreaking to have to go into a room to teach a child how to self inject insulin!

Are there Blacks 'milking' the system? Absolutely. As are many Whites, Hispanics and other individuals of different races, ethnicities, genders, etc.
The Appalachian Mountains, two hours to my north, are facing many of the same problems our inner city schools are facing. Apathy, low tax base, etc. What demands should I make of them before the greater society as a whole embraces them? Should the stop smoking meth or taking oxycontin? Should they learn to take baths?
Should they stop cousin fucking, and child molestation?
Let me know when they stop doing these things, I I'll resubmit my application on behalf of all blacks for admission to the fantasy land you live in.

Instead of trying to point out your perceived problem with my post, why not take a closer look at what I typed. Black parents need to take reponsibility for raising Black children. Teach Black boys how to grow up to becom strong, proud Black men. I saw a documentary years ago on British TV (although I suspect it was an American show) about men who make their women get fatter. Some would push a tube down their beloved's throat and pour fat down it.
ReplyDeleteAnother woman who had made it to at least 900 pounds couldn't get out of bed. She'd been there for years and hadn't even seen her mother or anyone else. When her man left her she had to call the police. The fire department had to cut a hole in the wall to get her out by hoisting her with a crane. She had to be hospitalized because the weight was crushing her lungs.
What I learned from this show is that these men were sadistic and the women masochists and they all need to be committed to the looney bin. I fear for the daughter. She should be removed from the household because that's some mentally unhealthy stuff going on there. Sad.

Eating myself to be the fattest person in the world is not my idea of a lofty goal. We send mixed messages in this country concerning weight. We want people to be thin and equate it with looking beauty, but there is a McDonald's just about every corner. McDonald's does something which I think is insidious on its part. In the black community, McDonald is ubiquitous. Everywhere I turn around, there is a McDonald's and you would think they would balance it out somewhat with having a Boston Market or Chipotle (McDonald are investors of this chains as well) as they do provide healthier choices. Then, McDonald's makes itself more attractive to the community having gospel competitions and concerts, and scholarship with the idea of giving back to the community while making us fat.

You would think that grocery stores and supermarkets can this opportunity and promote the idea people cooking at home where it is cheaper to prepare your own meals, however, marketers have told us that we are too busy to cook. I buy a pound of ground beef and make three to four patties for hamburgers or meatballs with pasta, or a bolognese with pasta, that can feed four to six people. Meatloaf is another recipe for a pount of ground beef. You can three different recipes with a pound of meat, but we no longer have home ec in schools to teach kids how to cook. Amy Holmes who you all know as the black conservative think it is cheaper for her to eat out than prepare own meals, this is from a woman who holds a degree in ecomonics from Princeton. Unbelievable.

I stopped eating Mickey D's too after watching Food, inc. For some reason that last double cheeseburger tasted like ass (don't even try it you fuckers..lol)And big girls,ehh, I had my run with them. I am a longtime silent reader of this blog. While I am used to the "salty" tone of most of the comments sections, the last four posts have taken a particulary nasty turn.

"alicia banks" is a hateful, boorish, foolish, obnoxious, petulent, immature, evil-minded, overbearing, selfish, repulsive, and ignorant woman. When she does have something prolific to say, her message gets "lost in translation" because of her rude tone and spastic responses. She has been a pox on this blog ever since she started posting here last summer. During here tenure here as the resident troll, I have seen a precipitous drop in the number of interesting and thoughtful posts.
Additionally, it appears that several of the more thoughtful posters have moved on to greener pastures (though some the more prolific regulars have stayed on and are admirably "holding down the fort"). It is a pity.
If I were a conspiracy theorist type, I would believe that she is a common troll whose raison d'erte is to purposefully bring down the level of discourse here.
I enjoy Field's postings and I respect his policy of maintaining an open forum. I will continue reading his blogs, but I will skip the comments section.

I came back for a quick moment in from obligations and caring for my boy. No Maria, I didn't start it. These kids had come to the floor via the ER where they were taken with diabetic ketoacidosis, and as childrens bodies will compensate till the very end, they were in severe distress!
