THE ALIEN IN OUR HOUSE!

Please read what Dorothy Rabinowitz, writing in the WSJ, had to say about his O ness:

"The deepening notes of disenchantment with Barack Obama now issuing from commentators across the political spectrum were predictable. So, too, were the charges from some of the president's earliest enthusiasts about his failure to reflect a powerful sense of urgency about the oil spill.

There should have been nothing puzzling about his response to anyone who has paid even modest critical attention to Mr. Obama's pronouncements. For it was clear from the first that this president—single-minded, ever-visible, confident in his program for a reformed America saved from darkness by his arrival—was wanting in certain qualities citizens have until now taken for granted in their presidents. Namely, a tone and presence that said: This is the Americans' leader, a man of them, for them, the nation's voice and champion. Mr. Obama wasn't lacking in concern about the oil spill. What he lacked was that voice—and for good reason.
Those qualities to be expected in a president were never about rhetoric; Mr. Obama had proved himself a dab hand at that on the campaign trail. They were a matter of identification with the nation and to all that binds its people together in pride and allegiance. These are feelings held deep in American hearts, unvoiced mostly, but unmistakably there and not only on the Fourth of July.

A great part of America now understands that this president's sense of identification lies elsewhere, and is in profound ways unlike theirs. He is hard put to sound convincingly like the leader of the nation, because he is, at heart and by instinct, the voice mainly of his ideological class. He is the alien in the White House, a matter having nothing to do with delusions about his birthplace cherished by the demented fringe. .."

That is a stunning pronouncement coming from a major columnist writing for a major A-merry-can newspaper.

"The alien in the White House" is what she is calling a man who was elected by a majority vote to be our country's leader. By writing that Obama doesn't identify with real A-merry-cans (as if George Bush did. I sure as hell didn't identify with the SOB. But then, I suppose, I am a globalist like Obama) what she is really saying is that nothing about him -from his name, to his skin tone, to his biological history- says A-merry-can. He is not one of us, so he can't relate. The reason that he has been facing criticism for his handling of the BP oil spill, is not because of his cool seemingly detached way of methodically dealing with problems, but rather his "un- affiliation" with the real A-merry-ca.

His "sense of identification lies elsewhere"? I wonder just where in the hell that would be? Africa? Indonesia?Cuba? Russia? Canada? Where? That, my friends, is a revealing and amazingly risible statement. But this is what masquerades for intellectualism in A-merry-ca these days. Rather than attack the man for his policies that might have led to this particular disaster (although I blame Bush, his former side kick, and BP) or even his style of handling things, we get this: that he is not really one of us. Imagine that: Our president is not one of us. Amazing!

"He is the alien in the White House, a matter having nothing to do with delusions about his birthplace cherished by the demented fringe."

Dorothy, I have news for you, you belong to that "fringe" as well. [Article]

Whether you agree or not, this piece struck a chord with a great swath of voters. I hear more and more people rejecting O ... even major news outlets are no longer referring to him as "President". I lost count the number of times this week I heard him referred to simply as "Obama" or "Mr. Obama". Never "President Obama". There is a growing and ugly backlash coming.

Let me be clear. I am not an Obama fan, and he has done nothing to deserve my respect. Respect is earned, not given. Before the election, I stated clearly that he was unqualified, incompetent, arrogant and he would be a complete disaster because he can't close the deal he was hired to sell ... and my predictions are coming true. He is even a bigger disaster and pathetic excuse than even I thought possible.

That being said, I am finding it fascinating how quickly the tide is turning against him -- by both the far left collectivists who envision a total cradle to grave statist system, to the independents and moderates who wanted to give Brown a chance.

Mark my words, the backlash that is coming will be ugly, and it's not something that I want nor hope for. But this editorial is just the tip of the iceberg, and the open lack of respect is a symptom of wide spread anger and angst.

I don't see a damn thing "fascinating" about it. I find it heart-wrenching and my greatest fears coming true about the country turning against our first Black President.

No, it is not "fascinating". I really think you meant to say "frightening". Or, at the very least, "depressing" the way Americans are turning against Obama, "the alien in the White House."

He is Black, and that in itself is alien to many Whites. Obama was elected under duress where the perfect political storm allowed a black man to be elected President.

I have a question. What would Dubya have done? Or John McCain, or even Sarah Palin about the fallout from this oil spill, or about the economy, or about the immigration question?

Hell, What exactly would expect Dorothy Rabinowitz to say? That the spill was the result of lax oversight and deregulation of the oil industry under the previous administration leaving one more bush-era fuck-up that President Obama had to fix?

That's funny when we give more credence to a facebook posting by a person who essentially whored herself out to the highest bidder while at the same time quitting a job that she wasn't remotely capable of or qualified for.

Everyone is upset that this spill is happening, and that it hasn’t been sealed. A lot of people are upset that Obama is President. Seemingly, a lot of people are conflating these two sources of irritation without actually figuring out a relation between the two.

And even with all the bad shit happening right now, he's still polls at 48-50%. Reagan was polling @ 34% at this point in his presidency, Clinton even worse. People know that when everything is put on the line, he's far more competent than any conservative who is scrambling to kiss the ass of the know-nothing tricorner-hat crowd.

Methinks we give wingnuts and conservatives far too much credit. They are still stuck in the '90's.

    The 1890's.

Name one electable republican in 2012.

  6. Trapped, it isn't about who in the GOP would do a better job; it's about peoples perception of the job our President is doing.

I didn't vote for him for a few reasons, pro life stances being one of them and his corporate sponsors being another.

He is just a man like all other men and a politician with an interesting name and handsome charisma. Do not expect him to change the world or advocate for Black people because the politicians primarily rally for THEMSELVES and their own SELF INTERESTS. This seems to be true no matter the party.

Field, I am afraid this label of Obama as "an alien" in the White House just might "stick". I hope not, and I pray it doesn't for the sake of our country. I thought the WSJ did not write such degrading articles against liberals and progressives. What happened? Oh, that's right...Obama is a horse of a different 'color.'

You know what's odd? The black conservatives have been right. And the black liberals and progressives-have been "dead" wrong about 'everything'. What's it going to take for the majority of Blacks to wise up?

One thing that Luv2BeFree said that was true: "things are going to get very ugly."

I completely agree with that statement. But the perception and the conventional wisdom don't jibe with the reality on the ground. If this incident was truly the fault of the administration, a la Bush with Katrina, and the American populace had a real problem with his handing of it, The national mood would undoubtedly be expressed via a drop in his polling numbers, which hasn't happened, even after 51 days. People would blame him. For the most part, they aren't. They are rightfully blaming BP.

Look at the view from the right with Obama's "whose ass to kick" comment. Jim Inhofe said that it was unpresidential for Obama to say what he said, however, President Bush and VP Cheney said far worse and so one made the argument that it was unpresidential.

I don't him to change the world. I expect him to lead the United States of America. I think he is doing that for the most part, pretty well. The problem with that is some folks would rather hate his very existence, wish death upon him, slander his name, ghettoize him, his family, his mother and father and by extension every African-American, rather than come to terms that sometimes the person that you vote for doesn't win the election.

That you win some, you lose some.

It's like they are children. They lost an election, so now they want to take their electoral ball and go home, which ironically, is farther to the right, more towards electoral oblivion. Do you think that the Tea Party is the mainstream of the Republican Party? How far do you think the Tea Party is from the 50's era Dixiecrats, or the John Birchers of the 50's and 60's? What's the real difference there? And do Americans know what they're getting when the elect a candidate that calls for the abolishing of the EPA AFTER the biggest oil spill in our nations history?

They should play the Looney Tunes theme every time one of these fuckers opens their mouth.

The outrage from some, especially conservative whites in this country, is akin to knowing that a great wrong that you unknowingly conspired or perpetrated in is being exacted from in some way, that Obama's election is the genesis of a slippery slope that will lead to white slavery or some fanciful revenge fantasy cooked up in the mind of Limbaugh and Beck. They need Obama, Liberals, Blacks, Gays, Atheists, and anyone who is deemed as "different" to be the Barbarians at the Gate, ready and willing to reduce the god-fearing, red-blooded real Americans to rubble if they don't rise up and "Take their country back". That only the Sarah Palins, the Rand Pauls, can save them.

And the dumbasses fall for it. Everytime.

  12. Field, these people are trying so hard to stay politically correct and "creditable" with their code words, but they're getting closer and closer to saying what they really want to say in public. And I'm not talking about the n-word either, its going to be much more deeper and analytically ignorant than that.

All they are doing now is building up and publicizing the momentum. And if they do a real good job in creating this hysterical bigot frenzy, there will be no need for apologizing or stating there were slips of the tongue, because by then they're hoping others in majority will understand and openly agree with support. Its just a matter of time, even in this day and age.

  13. My pastor actually had a sermon about how by the second year everyone would abandon the O-man. Liberals sound like the deluded fan in the famous Eminem song, 'Stan' who go from gushing over him unrealistically to demanding his head on a spigget. I've towed that row for far too long, I won't go any further.

The Right simply don't like or (For the most part) brown people -- and Obama happens to be all three, a center-left Black law scholar. If he were an openly gay man, they'd hit some sort of mouth-foaming trifecta.

Rabinowitz's article is, as Mike Malloy would say, "Bat Squeeze". Obama's personal story is so uniquely American its nauseating. The son of an immigrant becomes the President? That's a Horatio Algiers novel.

But that's not what the article points to. Its point to the fact that our Current President is academic in his approach -- i.e. he take time to think about what he does. How dare he? Should he be walking along the beach in a hazmat suit everyday?

When I hear white people complaining about an educated Black man being arrogant, I take it with a grain of salt -- because many times, what they actually want to say "uppity". I've heard that levied at me more times than I can remember.

What the article wanted to say is Obama is a nasty out of touch liberal and a darkie on top of it. As La-Audio pointed out, these devils are just getting started.

From the beginning you had your mind made up.

For you, candidate Obama's fate was sealed, even before taking office, or issuing his first executive order.

What you're seeing now as an uncanny "prediction" is nothing more that a self-fulfilling prophecy.

You, and others like you, were never prepared to give this president a fair shake, or respect, whether he earned it or not.

You see...from your standpoint, President Obama would not, could not, do enough, work hard enough, to be what you believe he should be, because he would always be competing with that preconceived image you'd already formed.

    Liberals, I'm afraid, have a character flaw. I'm a liberal...a progressive, actually.

Liberals believe in the fundamental goodness of their fellowman and woman. In addition, Liberals work tirelessly for the common good.

When George W. Bush resided in the White House, I suspect most liberals wanted him to succeed, despite his many deficiencies, jingoistic penchant, and warmongering ways.

We knew that Bush's success would be our success. Bush's failure would be our failure.

    "Are you missing me yet?"

This question printed under Bush's smiling face is met with a resounding No.

Nor do I miss that the presidency didn't go to McCain, and Palin.

In fact, I can't think of anyone in the 20th Century I'd rather see at the helm at this critical time in our nation's history, other than Franklin D. Roosevelt.

And if you have only these words for the president--"He is even a bigger disaster and pathetic excuse than even I thought possible"--you confirm all I need to know about you, and the political real estate you call home.

"But this is what masquerades for intellectualism in A-merry-ca these days."

    Who is masquerading, Field?

Rabinowitz is right. Americans are belatedly coming to the realization that Obama does not identify with American interests. He is bigger than America, he is a man of the world, and his allegiance is to his class - the academic left - and to its core values. Although a failed academic in his own right, he is the perfect front man for the secular leftist establishment. He has much more in common with, and has far more sympathies for his fellow travelers around the world than with the country he is supposed to be leading. That we have a leader who is "changing" our country for the benefit of the rest of the world is profoundly disturbing to most A-merry-cans.

This disenchantment is not racial. Obama is not black, unless you believe that black only refers to appearance. He did not grow up in Black America. He is culturally something else, a product of white liberal upbringings and institutions who used the shade he inherited from his Kenyan father to sell himself as a black man. Everyone has been had.

"liberals" were critical of Bush's policies: two unneccessary and failing wars (with the blood of thousands on his hands), legal torture (i thought we stopped torturing prisoners the same time we stopped burning witches at the stake), his alarmingly slow response to katrina, his disregard for the seperation of church and state, his obvious disregard for the international community, his hypercapitalistic world view, his stupid and simplistic cowboy "you're with us or against us" rhetoric, his extreme lack of common knowledge, etc etc..I could go on and on and on.

Most progressives only took character jabs when it was completely necessary...ie when he made statements that were frankly a national embarrasement. Like when he said he didn't speak Mexican. Or when he told a divorced mother of 3 that it was fantastic she was working 3 jobs. Or when he was reading a childrens book upside down. Or ..Let me stop.

The fact is, Obama hasn't done 1/20th of the damage that Bush did to BOTH America and the world. Pray tell what on earth has Obama done that could possibly compare to the shit under the Bush administration?
Sent our soldiers overseas to die in vain without any solid military plan? Lied and decieved the American people and the UN about the reasons for going to war? Nope. That was Bush/cheney and co.

Healthcare reform has been the one major achievement of the Obama admin so far. To all normal people, this is a good thing.

Yes he might not be doing enough during this oil spill crisis, and if that is the case he needs to be critized for it. However, I know who i'd rather have in the white house..an intelligent centre-left pacifist compared to a sub-intelligent, rightwing war-mongering moron.

Obama has done so much to restore Americas image in the world that it is unbelievable. Bush was an embarrasement to all Americans, and I'm glad I have a president I can actually take some pride in now.

And Zing is right...the reason none of you wingnuts care about the wars, the innocent civilans and soldiers dead, gitmo, katrina, the deregulation that lead to the economic crisis, people being forced out of their homes, the deregulation that lead to mining accidents, workplace deaths and a huge environmental disaster..the reason you don't care about the fact that we're a step closer to better healthcare for all americans..is because you DONT CARE ABOUT PEOPLE. Plain and simple enough. You care about business and getting your own..and thats pretty much it. I wonder what Jesus would say about that?

As a BLACK MAN - should I make note that the MACHINE THAT OBAMA SITS ATOP OF:

    * Controls MORE BLACK SCHOOLS

    * Controls more CITIES where Blacks have large populations

    * Controls more JAILS where Black folks are incarcerated (See Cook County Jail, Greaterford Prison, Dekalb/Fulton Jail......)

    * Controls MORE POLICE FORCES.......

Put the VERTICAL ARCHITECTURE together Coffee/Cigs and you are forced to note the relative POWER of your FRIENDLY Progressives versus your enemy conservatives.

  33. After almost two years some people are still referring to our President with terms like 'blackish' and 'not culturally black'. What utter bullshit! If none of these assholes ever knew anything about his background, if they saw him walking down the street and looked at him, he'd be a Black man.

He looks Black. He lives in the United States which makes him Black by our definition. I cannot believe this is an issue. But this Drabinowitze person is clearly trying to capitalize on the divided perceptions of his ethnic background as well as the tie to the Muslim middle name.

What a damned shame. I also get irritated when people call him an empty shirt to demean his intelligence. Personally, I find some of his stances morally disgusting. HOWEVER, he is NOT an empty shirt. He is helllllllla smart. This Negro revolutionized campaigning and used technologies to do it. He is smart. His wife is smart. His children are cute and smart too.

The problem with partisans is that they cannot see past their own noses. The only thing they do is vilify their opponents without actually analyzing what their opponents have done. To characterize our President as an alien, empty shirt etc is a slap in the face to him and a lie.

Hell I didn't even vote for him due to extreme ideological differences, but I am smart enough to recognize brains and charisma when I see it!

You don't get far underestimating your political foes, and I think that is exactly what the GOPers did in 2008 and its exactly what the DEMs are doing in 2010.

These asshole politicians have forgotten that they are supposed to represent the WILL OF THE PEOPLE and they are supposed to protect our rights.

With all of that said, I pray for our President at night sometimes even though I used to be filled with rage at some of the things he advocated. After all was said and done, I realized that I had a strong reaction to him precisely because he wasn't the Black Messiah that I hoped he would be.

My bad. For putting that shit on him. As I said above to Trapped in SC, he is just a man with human failings and some exceptional gifts. It is wrong of us to expect RADICAL changes from him because his powers as President are limited. He ain't superman.

As to your Tea Party comments Trapped in SC, well I attended one a couple of weeks ago in a town not too far from mine and in an area where there is only three percent Blacks.

I had a very nice time there and the people were cool. No Obama hating at all, just lively policy discussions.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Trapped in SC, I am sorry that I don't get the references to Inofe; I don't watch normal television news, CNN, FOX or anything else cuz I don't have a TV.

I still watch some shows on project free tv or hulu though;)

In some sense this insulates me from phrases and people that a normal tv watcher might be inundated with. But I still get brainwashed partway because of all the damned advertisements online!!!

this is murdoch speaking. you think the wsj endorsed obama? of course not.

rabinowitz is a CONSERVATIVE. she's the one who can't relate. i am sure she was for don't ask don't tell (repealed) against health care reform (passed), against global warming treaties and nuclear disarmament treaties (trying) against engagement with iraq (tried) against helping the palestinians (trying).

the guy isn't "an alien." like it or not, he's gotten a lot done in a short time under bad circumstances. the republicans line up to oppose and defeat everything he does. he also has the respect of world leaders like bush never did.

you aren't reading this in the NYT or even the post, which is becoming more conservative by the hour.

he can't relate? who was the recovery act for? who was healthcare for?

people who didn't like him personally, still don't like him personally. AND???

naive people think legislations, progress, reforms, etc. don't take compromises. they're not really "independent" they're just uniformed.

so anyone who believes this rhetoric is wrong and dangerous, what are you going to do? i see people turning over and saying, damn, she's right. that blacklash, man, watch out! they might as well switch parties. they allow this to perpetuate.

no, she's not right. except she is right--right wing. i hope this becomes the battle cry for the dems to use in fund-raising.

    -Maria

Maria, why do you think that some link you found from the Huffington post generally describes all Tea Party goers? I've gone to a Tea Party in my area and will continue to go as I am able and haven't experienced problems. Everyone seemed nice and was there to share their ideas.

Not to say that there aren't some fringe wackos in the group (I haven't met them yet though) but the same can be said for any group; there are always people that are destructive and nasty.

Why do you think that Ron Paul is racist and wants an all white planet? On a personal level, I have questioned his historical narrative regarding slavery and the Civil War. Because some of the statements he made about the institution of slavery were disturbing to me, I chose to vote for another candidate in 2008.

However, he does have some redeeming qualities when it comes to his notions of governmental responsibility and accountability. He and Dennis Kucinich actually align somewhat on monetary policy in that they both decry the FED and want it audited and then abolished or placed under Congressional control, as our Constitution demands.

In any event, I hope that my questions to you do not leave you offended. I am simply asking you about your personal opinion.

HummZinger - it is no great feat to have a list of "Bush Failures" from a Progressive-Fundamentalist. Hell even Barack Obama - a Deficit spending president attacks Bush for MAKING HIM have to spend debt money. In as much as you and Coffee/Cig don't seem to call him out on this deficit spending - it seems clear that DEFICIT SPENDING in and of itself IS NOT sign of FAILURE.

Neither is WAR where masses of people are killed.

Hell - I even learned that the same people who protest against POLICE SHOOTINGS can be made to CHEER when a Somali Ocean Pirate is SHOT IN THE HEAD by a WHITE Navy Seal!!!! All that matters is that their PERMANENT FRIEND is there to receive the glory!!!

It would be far more difficult, HummZinger for me to get you or Coffee/Cig to look at this video and tell me "WHO DID THIS TO US?"

    HummZinger:

Let me build up the CONSCIOUSNESS that will allow YOU to even GET TO THE POINT of agreeing to the purge rather than padlocking your body to the front door of Charlie Rangel so that he won't be made to leave his office after losing the vote.

    1) You have to realize that TO-DAMNED-DAY is far below your full potential.

    2) The same words that many a young brother hates to hear as a casual sexual relationship with a female is coming to the end must COME OUT OF YOUR MOUTH: "WE CAN'T KEEP DOING THIS!!!!

You see HummZinger the young female who had once "went along with the flow", initially enjoying your company and working to please you IS MORE ASTUTE THAN YOU. She realizes that while YOU are getting a good thing and thus are not going to raise awareness of a need for change as long as you are getting what you want SHE has more to lose per her time clock and her VISION that the people who love her had set upon her.

"WE CAN'T KEEP DOING THIS!!!" is a message that SHE is making her move to demand MORE of a mutual commitment from you or SEVERANCE, in pursuit of someone who has her PERMANENT INTERESTS in mind.

(I could stop right here HummZinger, for the rest is elementary but I am not known for brevity and leaving things up to you to figure out)

    3) HummZinger while YOU were thinking about linking back up with her to "get some" SHE was evaluating her life and where she stood. Though she likely doesn't have them written down she has a clear mind of her PERMANENT INTERESTS. For YOU I suggest that the next step is to WRITE YOURS DOWN. Go to a gloss flier printer that the Hip Hop artists use to promote their gigs and PRINT UP 10,000 "Permanent Interest" fliers.

    ReplyDelete
  42. 4) Marketing. Flood your community with these fliers. Allow people to see your viewpoint and the rationality and deep thought.

    5) Make people see that these PERMANENT INTERESTS are not YOURS but THEIRS

    6) Tell them that they must make METHODOLOGIES that ATTEMPT to achieve these Interests.

    7) Set up a TRANSPARENT ENTITY that MEASURES THE EFFECTIVENESS of these entities, retiring those that FAIL and supporting those that SUCCEED

    8) Go back to that same printer with an ANNUAL REPORT of your findings. Make a "You Are Here Map" and then show where your GOAL is

    9) Make sure that the KIDS are made to learn these things per their culture

    10) Rinse and repeat

YOUR LEADERS will show themselves per the MESSAGE you want to hear.

They should be talking about you returning to that of a FULLY EQUAL HUMAN BEING rather than your ANCESTOR'S SLAVERY

  48. RL, Intellectual acuity is unamerican. This country adores loud-mouthed America Right or Wrong idiots who'd rather blow stuff up than stop and think about the consequences. The public also wants instant gratification. They elected Obama thinking he was the proverbial magic Negro who'd just flip a switch or wave a wand and instantly make everything okay again. What they got instead is a smart person in a country that values stupidity, a cosmopolitan elected by people who are parochial to the bone, and a man who is inherently, eerily rational at a time when the unwashed masses are longing for a hot-tempered cowboy. So, yes, he's pretty alien, especially when you compare him with his predecessor.

He displays a fundamental ignorance of economics and has never had a real job. His first autobiography was written by his buddy Bill Ayers, and his second sucked. He thinks there are 57 states and he can't pronounce "corpsman".

That Bush was an idiot doesn't excuse this level of incompetence. Obama is in office because the Republicans were run by idiots, and if he wins re-election, he has no one but the Republicans to thank. Even a weak Republican candidate will press him hard. Prediction: Biden gets thrown under the bus and replaced with Hillary.

Spzork are you serious? Obama has bent over backwards to be bipartisan and appease the republicans. Yet all I've seen the rightwing do is obstruct, obstruct, slander, obstruct. It is them who see HIM as the enemy, not the other way around.

All I've wanted Obama to do was give the stupid repubs the finger..but if he had done anything firm like that, instead of an alien he would be getting called a member of the crips..bit of an exaggeration but not too far from the truth.

For example, lets look at war operations/killing in war. On a scale of wrong from 1-10:

Obama sending more troops to afghanistan in my opinion constitutes a 6-7. Thats not being light on him.

But actually starting the two wars, invading a country that had nothing to do with 9/11, lying to the UN, committing american soldiers into battle with an absolutely incompetent military strategy (therefore showing utter disregard for the lives of both soldiers and civilians), setting up torture prisons, allowing atrocities such as abu ghraib to happen, etc...well that goes way off the scale and hits a 20.

So yeah-not the best performance IMO, but definitely better than his predecessor.

If you want a measure of the unemployment rates, then show us the rates during Bush's presidency and right now..and we can see how the two can be successfully compared, taking into account relevant factors such as the global financial crisis (which im not sure you realize but Obama inherited not created).

Whites are mad at him because he's black and not Hillary or John McCain.

Gays are mad at him because he hasn't repealed don't ask don't tell yet and gay marriage is still illegal in most states.

Everyone wanted "their" issue dealt with before healthcare, before the stimulus, before the mess in Iraq and Afghanistan, etc.

The one that just slays me is how he pissed off the peaceniks who screamed when he moved troops from Iraq to to Afghanistan. He CAMPAIGNED on that very issue and is one major reason I voted for him. But now the "progressives" are pouting because they feel betrayed. That's when they aren't pouting about single payer and that Guantanamo is not yet shut down.

Some conservative writing for a local rag who is not an Obama fan took Americans to task for their daddy complex and the presidency. There is nothing the government can to do stop the spill because the government does not have the expertise. You might have legit issues about the clean up but until the gusher is capped or redirected, clean up is a not very meaningful.

With elections just held, it's clear that Americans have a lot more confidence in dumb asses like themselves than anyone with brains. People have the government they deserve. Bush was a moron for one term but THE PEOPLE loved his dumbass so much they re elected him. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, I'm an idiot. Someone like Sarah Palin should have been laughed off the political stage years ago but here she is, the leader and darling of the anti intellectuals, who seem to be reproducing themselves at an alarming rate.

A poster on another board presented this wonderful detail of how Obama has dealt with urban issues and the poor.

More in 18 months than his predecessors did in YEARS.

"Lets look at what President Obama did for Urban Areas and poor folks (many of whom are black) in his first 3 months of office -

the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act - Part of which provides $5 billion to fund Head Start and other child intitiatives.

Childrens Health Intitiative - Extending Health Insurance Coverage to poor children. The Bushsquat had vetoed this twice.

the Obama Treasury Department has nevertheless implemented policies with real qualitative and quantitative impact on debt-burdened families. Chief among those was a $2,500 tax credit to help offset the cost of tuition (among other expenses) for those seeking a college education. Nearly five million families are expected to save $9 billion, according to Treasury officials.

The Administration also included an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant – conceived by The U.S. Conference of Mayors and the top priority in the mayors’ Ten Point Plan — in the Recovery Bill. This Grant positions cities to receive an unprecedented $2.8 billion, and supports mayoral efforts to meet the goals of the Mayors’ Climate Protection Agreement, which commits cities to meet Kyoto Protocol Standards by 2012.

More than any prior president, Obama has put a spotlight on America's struggling cities, even creating an office of Urban Policy in the White House. It is the Justice Department, however, that lays claim to one of the most consequential of urban affairs achievements. Through the Recovery Act, DOJ secured $2 billion for Byrne Grants, which funds anti-gang and anti-gun task forces. The money, cut during the Bush years, is expected to have massive ramifications on inner-city crime and violence.

There are three worlds in terms of Obama complainers:

    1. Neo-con race baiters would simply can't stand the fact that Obama is the HNIC. They hate the fact that a) he's Black and way smarter than them and b)the concept that the government should exist to help people.

Simply put, how is Health care, clean energy, financial regulation or education a threat to the average conservative? What other advanced country would people complain about such standard things in a modern Western nation?

    2. Left wing moonbats who somehow think Obama was gonna change the planet in 18 months. Even if he was a some sort of radical hippie, Obama couldn't do half the crap they want legally in 18 months without causing major problems.

There are websites that keep track of what the President said he would do and what he's done. And for the most part, the man is eerily on track. But, ask Amy Goodman, Cornell West or Ralph Nader (and lets not forget our girl Alicia Banks) -- Obama has sold his soul to the Devil, if not the anti-Christ.

There are some folks who have legitimate issues and are tempered in their response and actually think about this issue at hand. UTS, MR, Field, myself and others live in this world.

Look Obama has screwed up some things. Obama's PR machine fumbled the oil spill, no doubt. And Salizar should have been thrown under the bus and ran over a few times. I don't like and never liked his stance on Afghanistan.

That being said, you're not going to get any better than Barak Obama in the White House. He's does his job and he's not a buffoon, like our last President. As MR said, even his enemies have to admit that this not a stupid man and he typically has more of a handle on things than we suspect. As Chris Tucker once said "let me be cool, let the President be smart."

Good one C&C. Becasue Bush was incompetent, it's OK that Obama is absolutely wrecking the economic basis for prosperity.

And btw, we did defeat the Taliban (they used to run Afghanistan), Iraq did have WMD that was never accounted for, Iraqi's are realizing things are better now than under Saddam, Bush did reduce terrorism, Bush did create a safer world, we have to fight for oil (we live on it), deregulation can be a good thing, and yes, America is the strongest economy in the world (although Obama is trying his best to "Change" that).

Bush's failures were not paying for the wars, trying to "nation build" like a democrat instead of kicking ass and going home, not breaking the stranglehold of the NEA on education, continuing the Clinton initiative of making banks give mortgages to people who couldn't afford them, increasing entitlements without paying for them, bailing out the financial sector instead of letting them take their lumps - all things Obama is happy to keep doing but on a larger scale.

i got your urban facts right here!

"Unemployment is crushing families and stifling the prospects of young people. Given that reality, President Obama’s take on the May numbers seemed oddly out of touch. “This report,” he said, “is a sign that our economy is getting stronger by the day.”

The economy is sick, and all efforts to revive it that do not directly confront the staggering levels of joblessness are doomed. Even the meager job growth in the private sector last month was composed mostly of temporary work. Lawrence Mishel, the president of the Economic Policy Institute, had the right take when he said, “These new data do not present a picture of a healthy private sector and offer nothing even closely resembling the job growth we need to dig us out of a very deep hole.”

More than 15 million Americans are out of work, and nearly half have been jobless for six months or longer. New college graduates are having a terrible time finding work, and many are taking jobs that require only a high school education. Teachers are facing the worst employment market since the Depression.

Entire communities are going under. A remarkable article in The Times last week detailed what has happened in Memphis, where a majority of the residents are black. It said the city epitomizes “how rising unemployment and growing foreclosures in the recession have combined to destroy black wealth and income and erase two decades of slow progress.”

The median income of black homeowners in Memphis has dropped to a level below that of 1990."

    urban this!

"The Urban League’s report put unemployment among blacks nationally at nearly 15 percent in 2009, compared with 8.5 percent for whites and 12.1 percent for Hispanics. It also showed a median income for whites of $55,530 compared to $34,218 for blacks. The UL called for a job-creation and job training investment of $168 billion over the next two years. FYI, back in 1962, Whitney Young, then UL’s executive director, called for a “Marshall Plan” to help black Americans that was largely ignored by President Johnson. LBJ was intent on “winning” the war in Viet Nam. The U.S. preferred making wars overseas to helping African-Americans at home in those days and Presidents Bush and Obama have followed in his footsteps.

Slumlords charge exorbitant rents. “Convenience” stores charge higher prices. Military recruiters have their pick of jobless youth desperate for work. And the for-profit, private prisons increase their head count (and income) as the judicial system hands off the young drug peddlers caught in the legal web. As the Kaiser Family Foundation reported, African-Americans fill 40 percent of the nation’s prison cells. Yet they make up just 13 percent of the nation’s population.

It’s a fact, the Associated Press reported, that “More than three times as many black people live in prison cells as in college dorms,” according to a Census Bureau finding in 2006. “It’s one of the great social and economic tragedies of our time,” Marc Morial, president and CEO of the Urban League, commented. “It points to the signature failure in our education system and how we’ve been raising our children.”

Indeed, a report released this May by the U.S. Department of Education finds the U.S. has 16,122 “high poverty” schools, and that students in them “are more likely to be minorities,” an AP story said. What’s more, the number of such schools is up from 12 percent of the total in the 1999-2000 school year to 17 percent of the total in 2007-2008 school year. In President Bush’s “no child left behind” era, it seems entire schools got left behind."

Assnon..this is exactly what i mean about masquerading fiction as fact.

How is the taliban defeated, when 8years on there are still areas of afghanistan under taliban strong hold? I dont know if you realize this, but the war is still raging on. Listen to the news if you dont believe me.

Iraq had WMD in your mind maybe..in reality, no.

And another piece of information for you: Saddam was actually hated by Islamists. He thought they threatened his power so he persecuted them. He had nothing to do with Al Queada

Terrorist networks have increased numbers since the start of the two wars. fact.

Saddam was a dictator, but there are alot of dictators around..The fact of the matter is we turned a secular, functioning dictatorship into a theocratic, disfunctional 'democracy.' If you think Iraqis think their country is better off now rather than 8 years ago your are a) seriously delusional and b) have clearly never talked to any iraqis.

People in iraq are being killed left right and centre. Some days the death count is as high as 120. Thats one hundred and twenty civilians murdered in one day due to fighting. For all intents and purposes, they're in the middle of a civil war.

The only time a humanitarian intervention in Iraq was justified was when Saddam gassed 5,000 kurds in the anfel genocide of the late 80s. By 2000, iraq did not meet the standards required for a humanitarian intervention. That is not to trivialize the suffering of the iraqis, but the iraqi people needed to get rid of saddam themselves..maybe with the help of the international community but certainly not with a military invasion of their country.

And how on earth did Bush attempt to nation build? His intention was to kick ass and not have to nation build..we bombed afghanistan from the air for 3 months before ground troops were sent in. Funnily enough we're the ones who seem to be getting our asses kicked there.

Please solve this riddle for me.. how is it that the worlds biggest superpower, with the biggest military budget in the history of the world, after 8 years cannot defeat a bunch of taliban who do not even have a single helicopter at their disposal?

    Clearly something isn't right.

LAC, I agree 100% with what you said. Although most things I've heard Dr West say about Obama I've agreed with, I've never had any unrealistic expectations..I know what can be logically achieved given the constraints and the short amount of time. This doesn't mean that we shouldn't keep pushing for or expect more reforms, but I'm not going to have a hissy fit and throw the man under the bus because everything has not been done to my satisfaction right this very minute.

His presidency has had some positives and some negatives. And in my mind the positives still outweigh the negatives. I also know the only realistic alternative come election time is much, much worse.

Touche, C&C. Never said the man was perfect, far from it. Like I said, there's plenty I don't agree with the President about. But we live in the world of reality -- where ideas and analysis have consequences.

I agree with Dr. West most of the time, but I also realize that there's an unfair advantage to being an academic or a media pundit -- you can say anything you want because nobody's gonna hold you accountable when things go boom.

Admit it, you were probably the biggest Obama booster back in the day. Its okay, we won't hate you for it. ;-) You're vitriol is almost a kin to a kid who found out that there is no Santa Claus.

In geek terms, you wanted Obama to be Superman or Captain Marvel (Shazam) and you realized he's Batman or Iron Man at best -- a very smart and capable human being, but still just a human being.

In recent years, Australian-born billionaire Rupert Murdoch has used the U.S. government's increasingly lax media regulations to consolidate his hold over the media and wider political debate in America. Consider Murdoch's empire: According to Businessweek, "his satellites deliver TV programs in five continents, all but dominating Britain, Italy, and wide swaths of Asia and the Middle East. He publishes 175 newspapers, including the New York Post and The Times of London. In the U.S., he owns the Twentieth Century Fox Studio, Fox Network, and 35 TV stations that reach more than 40% of the country...His cable channels include fast-growing Fox News, and 19 regional sports channels. In all, as many as one in five American homes at any given time will be tuned into a show News Corp. either produced or delivered." But who is the real Rupert Murdoch? As this report shows, he is a far-right partisan who has used his empire explicitly to pull American political debate to the right. He is also an enabler of the oppressive tactics employed by dictatorial regimes, and a man who admits to having hidden money in tax havens. In short, there more to Rupert Murdoch than meets the eye.

AB - You just made Greg's point in your last post -- if you know Rupert Murdoch is a rabid, race-baiting right winger and you're a true radical feminist as you claim, why the Hell would you reference anything one of his staff editors says about Obama?

Wouldn't make more sense to get real critics from legitimate progressive like the Nation. If your critique of Obama is that he's not doing enough for working people -- be logically consistent.

    You're all over the place.

Neoconservatism remains, to this day, a distinct and very significant voice of the Washington establishment,” Vaisse insists. In May, he published the report, Why Neoconservativism Still Matters.

The report indicates that there is still an active and influential older generation of neoconservatives, such as Norman Podhoretz, Elliott Abrams, Joshua Muravchik, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz and James Woolsey. The middle generation includes The Weekly Standard publisher Bill Kristol, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace scholar Robert Kagan, New York Times columnist David Brooks and AEI scholars Danielle Pletka, and Tom Donnelly. Former AEI scholar David Frum is also counted among their ranks.

Vaisse says that there is also younger group in their 40s, 30s and 20s “whose formative experience is not the Cold War, but the 1990s and, more to the point, 9/11 and the Bush administration’s response.” They include Max Boot, Dan Senor, Jamie Fly, Rachel Hoff, Abe Greenwald and Daniel Halper.

Efforts to Limit the Flow of Spill By JEREMY W. PETERS NY Times
    Published: June 9, 2010

"In a separate incident last week, a reporter and photographer from The Daily News of New York were told by a BP contractor they could not access a public beach on Grand Isle, La., one of the areas most heavily affected by the oil spill. The contractor summoned a local sheriff, who then told the reporter, Matthew Lysiak, that news media had to fill out paperwork and then be escorted by a BP official to get access to the beach. "

BP did not respond to requests for comment about the incident.

"For the police to tell me I needed to sign paperwork with BP to go to a public beach?" Mr. Lysiak said. "It's just irrational."

While you seem perturbed about MY selection of topics of interests - YOU never seem to evaluate FILLED NEGRO regarding his daily "Self-Chumming" topic selection.

    * Does Filled Negro spend proportional focus on those forces that control the KEY INSTITUTIONS that Black people receive our CIVIC SERVES from - or does he CHASE after his ideological adversaries, knowing that this move, while having a UNIFYING effect - fails to as a remedy to our problem

    * If we were to look back historically - Which faction hwas disturbed by the number of times that BLACK PEOPLE BEING LYNCHED was "thrown in their faces" for no other reason than to AGITATE awareness so that "SOMETHING MUST BE DONE FOR JUSTICE!!!!" would come true?

What this the ENEMIES of Black folks or the FRIENDS that thought that these "lynchings" were focused upon too much?

    * (For WhiteBowieSteve) Have you ever heard of a Civil Rights leader who looked at the LYNCH COUNT of Black people year over year and say: "Thanks to our programs in which we engage the Racist little White Klan Boys - teaching them CONFLICT RESOLUTION SKILLS and insuring them JOB TRAINING.......the number of Black people LYNCHED BY RACIST WHITES have declined by 40% since last year. I AM PROUD OF THE PROGRESS that is being made. We as a group will lean up on President Eisenhower to PROVIDE MORE GOVERNMENT FUNDING directed at these LITTLE KLAN BOYS who are killing Blacks so that they don't feel economically marginalized by the threat of Black people ascending up the economic ladder"?

MMM, "Geez, how is it that no one else saw this coming 2 years ago? Prez. Obaam was basically set up to fail and his lack of experience on the national level placed him in the perfect position to do just that."

I am sure many noted his inexperience. But the country was desperate and wanted something new that hopefully would bring change. The fact that he, a black politician, was elected proved how desperate America was. Unfortuately, electing a black man for President brought its own set of latent racial problems that is a big obstacle in itself to success. It, along with this BP thing is probably put the nail in his coffin. I hope that I am wrong.

The majority of Blacks didn't help either. Most did not particularly care about Obama's lack of experience or his political track record or the fact that many had never even heard of him. They only saw his election as a much needed lift for Black pride. Of course, these four years may prove to be just the opposite. I pray not.

Isn't it ironic how Blacks keep wanting things to get better but keep setting themselves up for disappointment? Nov 4, 2009 was a great day for Black Pride, but it's been downhill ever since.

Why do we keep going 'round and round' in the same ole circle, hoping to get somewhere by doing the same thing over and over again? Doesn't that seem a little nuts?

Some folks, like CF has offerred new ideas and NEW ATTITUDES- but keep getting rejected and attacked by the likes of Zing-Bat(who doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground), Mellaneous, TSC, UTS, and often by Field with his flock of followers like Val and Granny who keep asking CF the same old questions, even though the answers have been given numerous times over the years. But they are unable to 'hear' it.

I have concluded that the majority of black liberal progressives are incapable of 'observing' or 'hearing' anything 'new'....
They are only capable of hearing 'how' they are 'already right'.

Consequently, they continue down the same old blinding dusty political trail to self-destruction and 'unaccountability'.

    White Bowie Steve:

Do you notice that you make note of "Obama's success" yet you fail to note that:

    1) Obama has had a Democratic, filibuster proof majority for a good portion of his first year

    2) Obama had a US House majority for the Democrats

BOTH OF WHICH are key to passing his legislative agenda.

YET AT THE SAME TIME when it comes to this same CO-EQUAL LEGISLATIVE BRANCH you seem unwilling to note that THIS IS THE 4TH YEAR in which the Democrats have CONTROLLED BOTH HOUSES since they took over from the evil, racist Republicans in 2006.

At the same time you say "Effective" you fail to make mention that:

    1) The Black unemployment rate has hovered above 15%

    2) The national unemployment rate has hovered above 9% despite the promises that if the STIMULUS is passed it would not go above 8%

    3) The US FEDERAL DEBT is a record amount

    4) The US Budget Deficit - even in the first FULL Obama/ Federal Legislative Democrat control will be about $1,500 B in the red this year

    5) Despite the fact that Social Security paying more out in 2010 than it takes in - WE ARE TO BELIEVE that HEALTH CARE REFORM is going to be a "deficit cutting plan".

    6) Obama CLAIMS that people are paying less taxes and that they should be GRATEFUL - yet the claim was debunked as he and Nancy did not tell us that as PEOPLE ARE EARNING LESS MONEY they are not being ensnared by the PROGRESSIVE INCOME TAX. THIS was the most significant cause of the tax reductions.

He is doing all he possibly can right now as a human being. I mean it's not like he can plug up the leak with his body. However, people don't see it that way right now, because they are desperate and angry about their circumstances. They expect him to pull a rabbit out the hat and walk on water, but they ignore the fact that he is just a man like any other man and doing all he humanly possibly can do.

We're are suffering from the effects of deregulations and the Bush and Cheney era, but people want to blame President Obama. When his term is up, the day is coming when they are going to regret that they felt that way.

Yeah, their calling him an alien now, but the next devil they get, they'll be singing a different tune, because Bush didn't screw them half as bad as the next devil is going to screw them.

Before Obama was elected President, he was up against brick walls and strongholds--the GOP, people in his own party, the political pundits, corporations, and racist who hate the sight of a black man being in the "Lily White House". The President started out on a good foot, but the haters couldn't stand the fact that a black man was getting things done that they had been playing around with, avoiding, and procrasinated on for years. That made them look bad. So, they had to come up with something to slow his roll, and they did. They want to make him look as bad as they possibly can so that no other person of a darker hue will make it into the White House again. That was the plan from the beginning and will be the plan until his term is over. Funny how some sick minded people worship the "Lily White House and capitalism more than they do God our Creator. Like the word says, your heart is where your treasure is.

The battle is not over with yet. President Obama is still gonna come out okay in the end. He is not going to try and run another term because he doesn't want to deal with all the childish games or put his family through it again. Nevertheless, the day is coming when people are gonna say "Why are none of the blacks running for President? You don't miss your water til your well runs dry.

I actually have to disagree with you for the same reasons why I disagreed with Coffee/Cigs.

When you say "Obama was set up to FAIL" this means NOTHING unless there is some framework by which you can measure him. The BEST REFERENCE is one's own PERMANENT INTERESTS and if they have been accomplished.

To some "more people on government health care" is a plus. To others it means more centralized dependency.

Beyond that - another measure are people's ability to LET A BLACK MAN BE PRESIDENT of the United States and not a "Martin Luther King-type" 'historic figure' that need protection. (Right Black Diaspora?) His critics as all "secret Klansmen".

I choose to not evaluate Obama. Instead I look at the long term state of AMERICA and the MACHINE that forms the ARRAY OF CONTROL over the key institutions where the people I focus upon the most receive their civic services.

Anon #125 - with Obama you are in a lose/lose situation. You can ONLY promote people to make the prime reference to their PERMANENT INTERESTS, evaluate where THESE STAND and at some point expect that their intellectual honesty would have them stop LIVING VICARIOUSLY THROUGH the shoe of Barack Obama and the fashions of Michelle Obama.

The US has an ostensible policy of not negotiating with terrorists. I've decided to adopt that strategy. 162. uptown steve,

The plans for reorganizing GM and Chrysler were begun by the Bush administration.

Unfortunately, Obama added his own special touch. Perhaps you do not understand that GM lives on only because the taxpayers are now funding all the healthcare and pension benefits the company itself was supposed to finance.

Soon GM will sell stock to the investors. The government wants to unload its 60% ownership. Of course if GM offered good investment prospects, the government would want to keep its stock until it reaches a high valuation.

But no, the government wants to unload its holdings now, most likely sticking the public with stock in a weak and still likely-to-fail company.

If Obama really wanted to improve the economy, he would want to eliminate barriers on oil drilling, he would want to let car makers build any cars that buyers want, he would seek to eliminate the minimum wage, he would back a plan to create a guest-worker program, he would put an end to corporate income taxes, and he would stop telling the nation we will replace oil and gas with solar and wind.

She nailed it. As all of his financial initiatives have shown, his grasp of economics boils down to his belief that some people do have money trees growing in their yards and he's going to harvest the crop.

It appears Obama, the financial nitwit, wants BP to pay the salaries of people who are put out of work because Obama is putting an end to offshore drilling for a while.

If he enforces a drilling moratorium, then offshore drilling platforms will move to other parts of the world whhere they will stay for more than the proposed six-month moratorium. When the moratorium ends, no rigs will be available to drill in the Gulf, which means the people put out of work by Obama will stay out of work for 18 to 24 months, the usual length of contracts for offshore rigs after they've been towed across the Atlantic.

  171. Although Congress last year rejected the White House’s proposed cut to the amount wealthier taxpayers can deduct for home mortgage interest payments, the administration included it again in its 2010 budget — saying it could save $208 billion over the next decade.
And now that sentiment has turned against all the federal red ink — and cost-cutting is in vogue — Democrats on President Barack Obama’s financial commission are considering the wisdom of permanent tax breaks such as the mortgage deduction and corporate deferral. Calling them “tax entitlements,” senior Democratic lawmakers have argued they should be on the table for reform just like traditional entitlement programs Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid. ...

"cut" the amount (as in reduce) not eliminate..."wealthy" not everyone...on the table for discussion, no problem with that.

same conservatives who whine about the deficit can't think of any way to reduce it...

  173. If there is one non-sensical tax rule to end, it is the mortgage interest deduction.

In Canada, England, Germany and Australia, mortgage interest is NOT deductible.

The lack of a deduction has harmed no one in those countries.

However, the deduction does harm borrowers in the US. The lower the income of the borrower, the lesser the benefit.

Therefore, the after-tax rate for the lowest income home-buyer is the highest possible rate.

Let's skip all the nonsense and eliminate the deduction altogether. That way home prices will drop -- a little -- discounting the impact of the elimination of the deduction.

On the other hand, the US should end the corporate income tax.

If there were no corporate income taxes, then financial benefits, rather than tax-related issues, would drive spending and budgeting plans. At the very least, the economy would benefit from increased employment.

LOL @ Obama giving Hamas 400 million dollars. Hamas is considered a terrorist organization by the United States and yet they would suddenly give them money. Look I know the US government has a history of supporting reactionary movements around the world while labeling groups which don't bend over to the US as terrorists no matter their actual views but GTFO with that bullshit. It doesn't matter that he's gone on the record saying that he'll protect Israel's right to exist. No, that's not enough for them.
