With all due respect to F. Scott Fitzgerald; there are "second acts in American lives".
Take my man G. Gordon Liddy, for example. You remember G. Gordon Liddy don't you? He is the convicted burglar and liar who spent four years in prison for his role in one of the most ignominious acts in A-merry-can history.
And now this charlatan is a popular right wing radio host with mainstream credibility. He accommodates like minded people on his radio program who are allowed to say things like this:
"...the President has demonstrated that he has a default mechanism in him that breaks down the side of race - on the side that favors the black person."
Who elects these people? The aptly named Steven King (it's all about the horror) said those words while discussing his O ness with my man G. Gordon. But Mr. King has some history, so his comments about O was not that surprising. And it fits a pattern. Glenn Beck parroted the same narrative when talking about Obama hating white people, recently:
"Obama has 'exposed himself as a guy' with "a deep seated hatred for white people"'
I don't know, I guess when a person who looks like others you have had a hidden fear of all your life has the codes to the button, it's time to get a little nervous. He is, after all, the most powerful person on earth. We just can't have him hating the wingnut white guy now can we.
Still, Beck and Liddy promoting and participating in that type of talk is one thing; but hearing a congressman talk that way is scary. Even for a guy named Steven King.
And speaking of congressman, I just want to give a shout out to that politrickster from North Carolina who went all MMA on the little wingnut with the camera. * in my best haughty, pompous, young republican, college student voice* "Hi congressman, do you fully support the Obama agenda?" Give me a break! This is where the politrickster should have asked the wanna be Radio Rwanda reporter just what the hell his agenda, was. Instead, he asked him, "Who are you?" No! No! No! No! You already know who he is. He is a little wingnut trying to score political favors by playing gotcha with some democratic pol. You ask him nothing. You clock the little wanna be Radio Rwanda reporter and act as surprised as he is. You tell everyone that he was approaching you, and that you thought he was coming to do you bodily harm, so you reacted. How is that for a You Tube moment?
And how old is that congressman? Seventy? And that kid is begging him to let go of his arms? "Sir, please let go of my arm."

Nobody really expected Japan to beat Cameroon, except some very loyal Japanese fans. Now that Cameroon have only won 1 out of their last 11 WC matches it might be time to admit that the Indomitable Lions are starting to look like old moggies.
Italy very nearly lost to Paraguay, disaster averted by an equaliser in the 63rd minute. The weather, 7 degrees and rainy, may have played to Paraguay's favour but Italy is probably thankful for the lucky draw of a weak pool.
Portugal face Côte d'Ivoire in the second match tomorrow. Drogba is doubtful, despite the rumours of a miracle surgery and plastic cast. Portugal are the favourites and have not lost an international match since 2008.
Brazil v North Korea should be an easy day out for the Brazilians, but the Koreans may surprise us all. The last time they qualified (1966) they progressed to the quarterfinals, becoming the first Asian team to progress beyond pool play.
In the interest of "top notch banter", I would ask szpork to identify the last US President who was a prez for "all" the people. Given that there probably never has been one who meets that criteria then it is probably unrealistic to measure Obama by that standard. Good intentions, notwithstanding.

Honestly, I wish I could tell something to szpork to make him or her realize how ridiculous his or her comments are. It would seem to me that (1) Obama's political rhetoric since his inauguration has NOT been racially-focused at all (which is probably why many blacks are not satisfied with him) and (2) Obama's politics are LIBERAL, not black-first. Clinton pushed for many of the same things Obama does (seeing as both of them are democrats) and the question of race never came up like it does with Obama in the white house. quite frankly szpork, you have made some of the most one-sided, racist comments I have heard in a while. But, because America is a "free" country, I think you are entitled to your own opinion. And, in terms of Africans enslaving others, we must remember the terms of enslavement. CHATTEL slavery is much different from political slavery, in which the "slave" has the ability to hold political office, and is granted amnesty after a particular period of time. Chattel slavery is the buying and selling of human beings for the comfort of other human beings. slavery is not the same (although both forms are wrong), and because of this, we cannot, indeed I will not, lump them together in the same boat. ReplyDeleteYou're right. I would also like to expand your point by expressing the fact that Africa is a CONTINENT made up of many countries and even more tribes. These tribes had political differences and warred with each other. They do not see themselves as "the same people" much like the English didn't feel like they were the same as the Irish or the French of the Spanish. Nigerians will cop a major attitude if you refer to them by the wrong tribe -- especially between the Igbo and the Yoruba. When English folks sold Irish folks into indentured servitude it was never seen as "Oh no, they enslaved their own people."
Just like European tribes (yes they had tribes. Picts, Celts, Visigoths, Normans, etc.) saw themselves as separate entities, so did African tribes. When people remark "Africans sold their own people". It is essentially painting all Africans as the same. They aren't.

I have seen very nasty discussions of our President online and have heard people talk in my town in er less than favorable ways about him.
The country has NEVER EVER EVER been in this position before; a brown skinned mulatto President during difficult economic times is perhaps too much shock for some to take. Our brains want to assign blame to make sense of our problems and via policies he supported as a Senator I DO think he's negatively impacted our country.
But on the other hand, the harsh analysis usually reserved for him is not retroactively applied to his predecessors and that sort of looks like racism to me.
Regardless, he is our President and I don't agree with much that has come out of his mouth. But as American citizens he is our commander in chief and ought to be respected as such. I said the same thing about GW Bush when I'd hear rabid liberals demean him and his family too. It just ain't right.
A person's actions and political persona is not the same as what their soul is made of. Laura and young Barbara proved that today when it was revealed that they were actually pro choice and wanted Kagen in the SCOTUS position.
Alas that I ramble.

There's was never universal conservative support for him and it got worse with the Miers nomination and the deficit/debt. I've come to believe that where you get your news completely shapes your views, sounds obvious of course. I try to round it out some, as much as I can, but every source has a horse in the race it seems.

This is why a factual perspective devoid of the usual partisan bullshit is necessary. And once again why I urge folks to vote as Independents.

LACoincidental, nope. I remember 2004. The press was saying worst economy ever and the Iraqi death toll was in the nightly news every night pretty much. It was depressing and rightly so with regards to the war. I was trying to isolate the break when conservatives really began questioning Bush's judgment anyhow.

First question first...candidate Obama got it right..."typical white persons" have "imbred" reactions toward blacks, especially if they're blacks they don't know.
I know it's not the PC thing to say in our post-everything world, but, there it is....We can stop pussyfooting around it, and pretending that God is in his heaven, and all's right with the world.

Second question second...President-elect Obama attended him grandmother's funeral. What he didn't attend was the "community tribute service."

Obama's detractors were, and are, desperate to cast the new president as this hater of whites. They don't want whites supporting this black man. If they can drive a wedge, using this claim, they can all but assure victory for themselves in future elections.

there are actually people in this nation who don't base their criticism of obama on his race -- mixed or otherwise-- and don't use slurs -- and don't base it on his record as a senator, which was too thin for anyone to even remember. putting "bailouts" in quotes is quite humorous.
