There are a plethora of things that I could be blogging about tonight. I could start with half of Rev. Inc. calling out the Cav's owner.
“He speaks as an owner of LeBron and not the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers,” Jackson said in a release from his Chicago-based civil-rights group. “His feelings of betrayal personify a slave master mentality. He sees LeBron as a runaway slave. This is an owner employee relationship—between business partners—and LeBron honored his contract.”
Well....I don't know Jessie; while I do agree that it's very possible that Gilbert has massa issues, I am thinking that he is just a pissed off owner who got mad because he saw his prized possession leaving and he stands to lose millions of dollars. Wait....
“I strongly disagree with Rev. Jesse Jackson’s recent comments and we are not going to engage in any related discussion on it,” Gilbert said. “Going forward, we’re very excited about the Cavaliers and the positive future of our region.”
Dan, please, just quit while you are ahead. [Article]
Then, of course, there is the NAACP calling for the fashioning of a resolution which declares that the teabaggers are racist. Duhhhh! Why don't they just declare that there is gambling in Las Vegas while they are at it?
"A spokesman for the nationwide Tea Party Express did not return a request for comment.
Yes, he is still preparing a statement that he hopes that folks will not find racially offensive.
And speaking of race...nah, I think I will leave this one alone. No racism chasing for me tonight. I am tired of chasing that SOB. Besides, I don't have my racism track shoes on; they are a special fit.
I do want to talk about a recent college graduate from the great state of New York. At a time when unemployment is pushing ten percent, and A-merry-cans find themselves in a recession, Scott Nicholson, a recent Colgate graduate, has decided that a $40,000.00 a year job-to start- is not good enough for him.
"Over the last five months, only one job materialized. After several interviews, the Hanover Insurance Group in nearby Worcester offered to hire him as an associate claims adjuster, at $40,000 a year. But even before the formal offer, Mr. Nicholson had decided not to take the job. Rather than waste early years in dead-end work, he reasoned, he would hold out for a corporate position that would draw on his college training and put him, as he sees it, on the bottom rungs of a career ladder. “The conversation I’m going to have with my parents now that I’ve turned down this job is more of a concern to me than turning down the job,” he said."
Welcome to A-merry-ca. I just hope that Scott doesn't live at home with his parents. Because, if he does, it speaks more poorly of them than it does him. And, believe me, that takes some doing.
Finally, I see that Rush Limbaugh is leaving the east coast and is selling his digs in New York. Hmmm, I thought it smelled a lot nicer outside.
The idea that the NAACP wants a resolution caling someone out just goes to show that the organization has lost its organizational mind.
ReplyDeleteThey should go back to holding vocabulary funerals and let their members actually get busy trying to solve issues rather than just trying to get press for themselves.
Seriously? This is how the organization spends its time and money?
Seriously?
Brohammas would like to pass a resolution stating that Constructive feedback is insulting and we have noticed his absence, and that Alicia Banks will post something longer than I feel like reading as I assume it will mostly be about twelve links to her own blog.
FN, while that one guy sounds a bit arrogant, he's thinking of his mental health. He probably figures that he'd go crazy if he had to work a job he didn't like. What he doesn't seem to get is that beggars cannot be choosers. In this economy he NEEDS experience and money. He is eschewing both by not taking that job.
ReplyDeleteAs to the disgusting troll, Brohammas, why'd you invoke that yuckiness?!
I am applauding the young brother. $40,000 a year is not much money. When Uncle Sam & New york get their share, the brother is down below 30,000. Now do the math. A little food, a car, light and gas, insurance and a phone and the brother still hasn't paid his mortgage.
ReplyDeleteIf the brother thinks his skills are worth more than they are offering, he's no different than any other man that wants to be paid.
Speaking of which, Cleveland Cavaliers Owner is nothing more than a 1863 slave owner... from Texas. You know, that's why we have a holiday. Juneteenth Baby, the slaves are free.
Shameless drive-by spam... http://careycarey-carrymehome.blogspot.com/2010/07/is-clevelands-owner-pervert-priest-or.html
Clevelands owner is a pervert preist. Read it and weep.
The NAACP resolution may be "simple",however, it is always a good day when the main stream media associate The Tea Party with racism.
ReplyDeleteI read Bob Herbert "Watching Certain People" and I was shock.
Olbermann reported tonight on his show that it was the Bush Administration that dropped the voter intimidation case against the New Black Panthers Party.
With the recent (disgusting) comments by Barack Obama's wife and the NAACP, one can only wonder if it is the plan to cover the gap Mr. Obama has himself created among independents by creating the perception that the Tea Party, despite CLEAR NEUTRAL EVIDENCE TO THE REVERSE, is at heart a racist group of whacko fringers descended from the John Birch paranoid anti fluoride freaks.
ReplyDeleteOne can thus further wonder if Mr, Obama has, like the rest of his sad projects, considered the medium and long consequences of making of those concerned with deficit, debt and the Constitution RACISTS, when he coddles in his arms, and keeps from justice those African Americans calling for blacks to kill whites and 'they babies' if they want to be free.
One wonders if he has considered the REAL CONSEQUENCE of trying to make opposition to him and his party and his plans RACISM?
The NAACP is dead. They are ACORN, and SEIU cat's paw, as MOVEON is Soros', and Hizballah is Iran's.
Tragedy has found them.
So much for the good of electing this man as a statement that we are not racist, for it appears that many of us are, just not the ones expected.
Hate or love him Jesse is on point with Gilbert's attitude.
ReplyDeleteI hear periodically from whites that black athletes make too much money and should be happy and not complain and this falls right in line with Gilbert's ranting open letter.
It's interesting that whenever a black man who has marketable skills and uses them to fulfill his desires he is selfish and arrogant?
The fact that Gilbert would prefer that LeBron stay loyal to him and LeBron suborning his own desires in favor of what would benefit his Gilbert is exactly how a slave would act toward his slavemaster therefore Jesse description is spot on.

These cats are all over the place.
BTW: I'm working on an interview with one of those evil New Black Panthers -- it should be very interesting.
Lastly Field, I need your professional opinion. It has to do with the verdict in the trial of Johanness Merhsele. Check it out and lemme know what you think man. I got some professionals weighing in on it.

"I hear periodically from whites that black athletes make too much money and should be happy and not complain and this falls right in line with Gilbert's ranting open letter. ReplyDeleteAwesome sauce. Sooooooo True.
TOSC and the other poster, while in an ideal world, any person with great skills should turn down jobs below their level, that tactic is debatable now.
ReplyDeleteI guess if Mommy and Daddy can continue to pay his bills while he looks for the 'right' job, then he's doing well. But if he thinks its his right to sit on his duff and collect welfare payments or general assistance when he's been offered a job, I gotta scratch my head at that.
If anything, he could get hired on at the forty thousand dollar per hour job WHILE he's looking for another one. There's evidence to suggest that many employers prefer potential employees to already be employed so perhaps he ought to rethink his position. I wonder what type of job experience he has. It could be that his resume looks impressive and his degree augments that.
And I am a new Mother with a mortgage, child, husband and dog to think about so that colors my perceptions. He might not have all those responsibilities and can truly afford to wait this out. Best wishes to him in any case!
40k per Year job;)

If you add a dash of neurosis-driven malevolence (something like the economic equivalent of penis envy? ) you get a marxoid “Progressive”. Don't sell yourself short, it's all you got baby.
Rev. Jesse saw the ratings "The Decision" got & wanted a piece of it. Really, someone ought to remind The Rev that Cleveland is nearly 55% African-American & has a median household income of $25,000.
ReplyDeleteSomeone ought to remind the Rev Jackson to STFU. Nobody cares what Jesse has to say; Al Sharpton is King of the Negroes now.
ReplyDeleteGregory, man, I have a jones, a habit, an addict to this blogging thang and I've trying to quit cold turkey, with little success.
ReplyDeleteI started deleting all my post and everything. I didn't want them to offer me another hit. Well, when I started reading them, another idea popped up, and, well, you know what they say... one is too many, and a thousand is never enough.
So, in short, I've been in and out. I did, however, write a post on LeBron Tron (above).
And, I generally read fields blog and Rippa's... and a few more.
But man, everybody is jumping on my boys Jesse and Al Sharpton. That's blasphemy.
And, I never understand people that throw stones under the name "Anonymous". I bet you they surf for underage girls. I mean, that's some tranvestite mess. Are they aren't they...
Cracker moms of America agree...
ReplyDeleteCareyCarey, "And, I never understand people that throw stones under the name "Anonymous". I bet you they surf for underage girls. I mean, that's some tranvestite mess. Are they aren't they..."
ReplyDeleteAnonymous IS my name. And other anons are my extended family. At least we aren't addicted to blogging like some crack addict like you. Now that is some sick stuff. It shows that you don't have a life...weakling.
Well Anonymous, since it's late and there's a slight break in the action, lets break that down.
ReplyDeleteOkay, blogger's are sick cracker addicts and you're hanging in the dope house. Now, I don't know if you've ever been in a dope house but generally there's a few prostitutes hanging around. They don't usually have a name (just like you) but they will do anything for a little attention.
Since I don't know if you are a man or a women, I can just imagine what you might do. I mean, since you've implied that you're not a blogger, WTH are you doing hanging around addicts? Come on, you can tell us. You said you were around family and friends. But be careful, although you tried to bring your friends into the fray, they might leave you stranded if they find out you're on some Freaky Deaky mess.
I know you've heard the song "Whats love got to do with it".
A few things --
ReplyDeleteJesse hit the nail on the head. This coach sees LeBron James as little more than a strong Black Buck who ran off his plantation. This owner knows that with King James, the Cavs are a 3rd tier team.
NAACP just figured out that the Tea Baggers are racist. Hmm, maybe they'll learn water is wet.
Scott Nicholson is the typical rich trust fund baby hipster who have mommy and daddy supporting him well into his 30's. With any Ivy League engineering degree -- my first job only paid about 5k more than his does now.
ref: HNOD
ReplyDeleteSpeak the right words and you can make millions. I guess that is easier than pulling yourself up from your bootstraps or actually taking responsibility for your fortune.
Everyone has to do what's in their best interest. That applies to LeBron and to Nicholson. The NYT writer that wrote the story was on C-SPAN yesterday. He said that as a result of the story Nicholson has received more interviews.
ReplyDeleteThat's privilege in action. Bottom line is that unless Nicholson is going to be working in finance, college degree or not, with no real job experience he's not worth much more than 30-45K/yr when he's just starting out. But since his parents are willing to underwrite him for now, that's his business.
As far as Lebron/Jackson/Gilbert, Jackson didn't say anything that's not already all over the blog-o-sphere. Is it 100% accurate? No. But obviously owners don't like free agency. Mark Cuban is talking about trying to change the rules so that free agents can't talk to one another. Gilbert's comments were wildly unprofessional and crude beyond anything that he alleged Lebron said or did. Lebron fulfilled his obligations to the Cavaliers. That's it. There is a racial element but it's also class. When the players try to treat it as a business the owners start talking about loyalty and the game. When the players try to treat it as a game, the owners start talking about the bottom line. Wasn't that the line from "North Dallas Forty"?
Lebron doesn't owe Cleveland jack. And if the rumors about Delonte West are true, why would Lebron wish to stay there? There might be a lockout coming anyway. If the owners could do so, they would get rid of free agency and guaranteed contracts. This "max salary" nonsense was just the beginning.
Shady..you might have hit on the real reason James left in the last part of your comments.
ReplyDeleteSup CareyCarey? Nice to see you blogging again.
Lawd blackinalabama, are you serious that DOJ under Bush dropped the Philly NBP,case? I wonder if Radio Rwanda will report on this one?

Nothing "vague" about it: Justice for everyone, regardless of their economic standing. It's rather simple, really.

And Mr. Kling would be the first in line for food stamps if his family was starving.

Yep, a few weeks ago I decided that BP has too much.
Rippa, I will have to read the transcript of that trial. Promise I will get back to you on it.
From the article...'Over the last five months, only one job materialized. After several interviews, the Hanover Insurance Group in nearby Worcester offered to hire him as an associate claims adjuster, at $40,000 a year. But even before the formal offer, Mr. Nicholson had decided not to take the job.'
ReplyDeleteDamn, it's a good thing we aren't in the grips of a recession.
Hell, with all those opening out there, Nicholson is bound to be picked up in another month or two, or three.
Wait, he's already been looking for five months, and he only landed one job, and he turned that one down!
This guy, with nothing more than a degree to recommend him, a degree which probably came with a pricey price tag, flipped the birdie at a potential employer, and decided to wait until after the storm passed, to run for cover.
When you see the weathercaster decked in rain boots, a raincoat, and holding an umbrella say that tomorrow will be sunny, cloudless, and a good day to spend in the park with the family, don't let the fact that he's an expert cloud your commonsense.
If I were an employer, and I knew of this young man's folly, I'd pass his up as quickly as I would Freddie Krueger, standing by the side of the road with his thumb to the heavens.
And it's not because of this young college grad's certainty of his own value...that's a plus.
It's not because he relying on his parents income to see him through...parents are stupid like that.
And it's not because he's a recent college grad, and an unproven product.
No, it's because he squelched an opportunity whereby he could have turned iron into gold, could have brought his alchemist belief in himself to bear...his confidence that no matter the odds, no matter the obstacles...he would prevail.
He could have demonstrated to himself and to others, that no opportunity was too small to prove to the world, not only his self worth, but his unsurpassed value as a current and future contributor to the employer we call Life.
A borrowed zinger...
'Time and tide waits for no man.
As, apparently, the lone poster from Northeast Ohio, I feel strongly that Jesse should go sit down and make a new plan to shake down BP or something. Dan Gilbert went over the line, but he did express what those of us in the Cleveland area feel. It has nothing to do with being a slave owner. It has everything to do with being a sports fan in Cleveland. We're hurt and disappointed. Those feelings don't always make for the most rational outbursts but they do come from the heart. Only someone who has watched a football team moved out from under them, seen a baseball team almost have a winning streak and a basketball team finally get a modicum of respect to see it run away, can understand how peeved we are about King James.

ReplyDeleteThe Manchurian Moonbat's Cloward-Piven economic policy is working as planned:
ReplyDeleteThe government's current spending trends "will destroy the country from within," said the co-chairmen of Obama's national commission on debt.
Commission chairmen Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson spoke Sunday at the annual National Governor's Association meeting in Boston, Mass., reported the Washington Post.
Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security programs annually consume all federal revenue, according to the chairmen. All discretionary spending funds for year-to-year budgeting and expenses are used up on the three programs, forcing the government to borrow money to cover the rest of the government's expenses.
This is why our Democrat rulers chose now to ram through a massive new entitlement with ObamaCare. As for the national security implications:
"The rest of the federal government, including fighting two wars, homeland security, education, art, culture, you name it, veterans, the whole rest of the discretionary budget, is being financed by China and other countries," said Simpson.
It's going to be hilarious, when Obama's fellow commies in mainland China invade Taiwan and snuff out its prosperous democracy. Excuse me, Wen Jiabao, can we borrow some money to fight you with? The ChiComs might as well annex Japan while they're at it. Who's going to stop them?
By electing Obama, we elected to reduce America to a second-rate country. This is going to create a power vacuum that will not be filled by nice people. But we'll be too busy digging through dumpsters for something to eat to worry about it.
By 2020 the United States will be spending $2 trillion on just the interest of the national debt, said Bowles, if the United States makes no changes.
No wonder Obama keeps poking the public in the eye on ObamaCare, illegal immigration, etc. He doesn't need to get reelected because his work is already done. In less than 2 years he has sunk us so deep into debt with massive wasteful spending that it is only a matter of time until our economy completely collapses, paving the way for his fellow radical leftists to make the inevitable transition from soft tyranny to hard tyranny.
Yee-hah!

I hate the President's policies because they are destroying the country.
Where did he get that $5,000 he handed for new cars, or the bailouts? It wasn't his money, he didn't wave his magic hand and create it. He just took it. The money he "gave" to women workers came right out of the pockets of working men, precisely the ones who have borne nearly all the pain of this recession.
The Tea Party guy with the machine gun was black, so your racist meme means nothing. The hoax regarding Rep. Cleaver and Lewis being called "nigger" has been thoroughly and completely debunked. And if one person called Barney Frank a fag, I guess that impugns everyone, even though Barney's homosexuality keeps intruding into his job responsibilities, as he was sleeping with a member of the Fannie Mae board over which he had regulatory responsibility, and he once had a gay lover running a prostitution service out of his house. On top of that he is a corrupt, lying, backstabbing criminal who should be in prison.

I'll assume both these post were created by the same person. Let me say to Anon -- you're completely wrong and lost in a middle class entitlement bubble.
First of all, insurance claims adjuster isn't a horrible first year job. You do it for 2-5 years, build experience and move on.
So what its 40K/year? A) its not like he's making lattes at Starbucks and B) he's a 24 yr old kid with no real job experience. Its not like he has a JD or an MBA.
What's funny is that this kid is thinking of going to the Marines in the middle of two wars. So being an office drone is too tough, but you're gonna risk getting crippled or dead when you have a Colgate degree? Real smart.
A little history. My first job was as a junior programmer analyst at biotech firm. It paid next to nothing, but the dot com days were slowly grinding down in 2000 and it was close to home (no rent). When the tech bubble burst in 2001, I got laid off. The only job I could find was tech support -- the crappiest job in information technology next to tape operator. I was stuck for 2 1/2 years working as a help desk technician in at a web host company. Here I am, with a physics degree from one of the top 5 schools in America, answering phone support questions about how to set up Outlook. I had high school graduates bossing me around. It was humiliating, boring and completely beneath me.
But I did it long enough to springboard into a much better career. This kid is simply too rich and too spoiled to know the real deal. (both his parents are upper management professionals.)

ReplyDeleteYes. It didn't happen. It has been demonstrated beyond a reasonable doubt that it didn't happen. The congressmen's story was a fabrication intended to defame the Tea Party movement and distract attention from the resistance to Obamacare.
Under circumstances where such evidence would exist if the incident had occurred, no audio or video recording corroborates it, despite Andrew Breitbart's offer of a $100,000 reward to anyone producing such evidence. And no independent journalist or other eyewitness has stepped forward to vouch for the congressmen's story -- because it didn't happen.
Given the involvement of Rep. Clyburn in promoting the story, the fabrication extends to the Democratic congressional leadership. It is a scandal that warrants the attention of the mainstream media, but instead the mainstream media continue robotically to repeat it.
The charge that the Tea Party is racist is a perfect object lesson in liberal misinterpretation of conservatives. It is, of all the charges leveled against the Tea Party movement, the most inflammatory and the most politically damaging. Yet the accusation says more about the accusers than the accused.
ReplyDeleteCritics of the Tea Party point to a smattering of racist signs at rallies around the country, to the low percentage of minorities involved in the movement, and to a study that purports to show high levels of "racial resentment" among tea party supporters. These arguments are, however, mere justifications for a position already taken. Liberals were inclined to believe Tea Partiers racist even before such "evidence" was available. That is, the belief that Tea Partiers are racist is not an evidence-based belief. It is a belief in search of evidence.
Since the education establishment has failed to convey a thorough and unprejudiced perspective on differing political points of view, even highly educated liberals possess a cartoonish, easily-dismissed image of American conservative thought. Liberals cannot believe that Tea Partiers are actually motivated by the passions and the reasons that Tea Partiers claim motivate them, because liberals in general are alienated from those passions and insufficiently educated in those reasons.
It is essentially a failure of imagination. Liberals cannot imagine themselves into a way of thinking in which conservatives do what they do and believe what they believe for good reasons. And since they cannot believe that conservatives are motivated by rational beliefs and admirable motives, they must appeal to darker, more primitive impulses to explain their behavior. The racist motive presents itself as a natural and convenient explanation.
Liberals, in other words, were always going to believe that a movement dominated by white conservatives is racist.

ReplyDeleteAnon, let me get this one straight -- you're claiming that if you don't support the Tea Party (who have a lot of American history ass backwards) you're not educated. Uh, OK.
The problem isn't that the Tea Party they're mad -- its that they aimless in their frustration and oblivious to political realities. Example, the anti-immigration movement is taking a legitimate anger (lack of jobs and financial insecurity) and aiming ruthlessly at the wrong people (undocumented workers doing the crap jobs we'd never think of doing.) Yes, they're mad at Wall Street, but the Tea Party fought against financial reform. That's like complaining about crack dealers but fighting against more community policing. The Tea Party fought against healthcare reform and unemployment benefits -- things that would save many of them from the poor house.
And yes, its racism. So waht a Black guy shows up to protest a Black President in the company of racists. And there were plenty of Jews who conspired with Adolf Hilter -- what's your point?
There's always an Uncle Tom or Oreo in the crowd willing to sell out his or her own people. Every nation has their collaborators. One of the reasons why colonialism worked so well for Britain is that they could always find one or two brown people who were willing to play Judas for a few shiny pieces of silver.
Hell, Black people fought with the Confederacy in the Civil War. That didn't make the Confederate stance on Slavery any more right.
LAC:
ReplyDeleteEvery movement has its fools and offenders. Counter-activists infiltrate the Tea Party rallies with misspelled or outrageous placards. And liberal reporters are attracted to displays of conservative idiocy like flies to honey.
If there were a higher percentage of racists at Tea Party rallies than in the general populace, would this mean the movement is racist? To answer yes is to confuse correlation with causation. Even a movement that has nothing to do with a particular -ism may arise among or appeal to a constituency in which that -ism happens to be more common. The vegan movement may, due to its history and location and demographics and even the set of beliefs associated with it, have a higher than usual percentage of anti-semites, yet this would not make veganism anti-semitic.
If some participate in the Tea Party with racist motives, perhaps because they loathe the thought of an African-American President, would this make the movement racist? Again, the answer is no. The human psyche is a complicated wreck, and when millions of people participate in a movement they will do so for a thousand different reasons. Any protest against President Obama, even if it were a protest against the continuation of the Afghanistan war, will provide an occasion for racists who seek to oppose Obama for any reason whatsoever.
Photos of rally placards are also used in a more subtle way to argue that the protestors are simply so angry and so exaggerated in their criticisms that they must be driven by racist impulses. Yet anyone who believes that the Tea Party protests are uniquely angry or offensive, or filled with Nazi comparisons and allusions to violence against the President, should take a stroll down memory lane in Bush-Hitlerville -- where "Kill Bush" shirts can be purchased alongside bumper stickers with nooses and signs of Bush beheaded; where you can take your family to visit a guillotine with a decapitated Bush at an Obama rally; where you can entertain yourselves by burning Bush effigies or watching "Death of a President" or making assassination threats on YouTube with your children; and where everyone from Nobel Peace Prize winners to Democratic governors and Presidential candidates speak openly of killing the President.
The mainstream media largely ignored the hateful rhetoric directed against President Bush, and waxed lyrical over the protestors. Now they fret over the "seething anger" of these "very angry," "rabid," "outraged" Tea Party protestors, and warn that those who encourage the Tea Party are making "sweet music to the ears of Lee Harvey Oswald wannabes."
There is gross immaturity and aggression on both sides of the aisle, and "the other side does it too" is no excuse. To borrow from Michael Gerson's recent Washington Post column, there are parts of the "grown-up party" and the "ugly party" in every movement. The grown-ups should impose discipline, and movement leaders are already excluding those with racist messages. But the sheer animosity I have seen from the Tea Party so far does not hold a candle to the hatred for Bush that was evident throughout his presidency, and the "anger" presents no reason to conclude that it is irrational racism, rather than a rational and justified response to a government gone off the rails.

Right?
-----------
George W. Bush increased the deficit more than all 42 of his predecessors combined. Got us into two unnecessary wars at the tune of $5 billion a month.
Where were you and the Tea Party racists then?
-------------
TD: First, the deficit spending of the Obama administration is vastly greater than what we witnessed during the Bush years. Even in the midst of the financial meltdown, the Bush administration sought one-time expenditures, and many conservatives were convinced that extraordinary measures might be necessary. This does not begin to compare with the Obama budget plans, which envision trillion dollar deficits as far as the eye can see, or the mountains beyond mountains of debt that will follow from Medicare reform and cap and trade. It is entirely natural that those who grumbled and protested when Bush overspent would shout and march when a new administration presides over the most immense expansion of federal power and bureaucracy that this country has seen for generations.
Yet the second problem is more important: conservatives did protest the big-government spending habits of the Bush administration. Most conservatives loathed the Medicare expansion. The very same FreedomWorks that has thrown its weight behind the Tea Party movement pushed hard to "Stop the Wall Street Bailout" in late 2008, for exactly the same reasons that Tea Partiers now oppose much of the Obama agenda. The Heritage Foundation also objected that TARP exceeded the enumerated authorities given the federal government in the constitution.
That liberals do not know these things points to the heart of the problem. Since liberals control the American education establishment, and nearly all of the major news organizations, conservatives generally are better educated in liberal ways of thinking than liberals are in conservative ways of thinking. How many of us, in high school or college, heard thorough, eloquent, and charitable defenses of conservative theories of society, economy, and government? The faculties at major universities and the staffs at major news organizations are overwhelmingly liberal. This has not served our country well. Liberals in general get their views of "conservatism" second-hand through liberal caricatures, and this has made them better able to demonize conservatives than understand them.
Sarah Palin made the comment that the President should make the NAACP apologize to the Tea Party for calling them racist.
ReplyDeleteSomeone mentioned Freedomworks. Aren't they the ones that started the Astroturfed Tea Baggers with their leader Dick Armey?
ReplyDeleteIn a mere 19 months, Obama has taken the US from a AAA credit rating to AA. What an achievement! Let's see what he can do in his last 29 months!
ReplyDeleteTimothy Dalrymple: "Liberals are trained to believe that many of the traditional American ideals and values that conservatives inherit in their families and churches are cruel and intolerant, imperialistic, and implicitly racist, sexist, and classist. They are trained, for instance, not to be motivated by patriotism and American exceptionalism, but by an ideal of world citizenship and parity.
ReplyDeleteLiberals consistently misinterpret what motivates conservatives because they really cannot see the world from the conservative perspective. Liberals cannot imagine that Tea Partiers are really motivated by concern for their country, and by frustration with a White House hemorrhaging red ink and a government less concerned to represent the interests of the citizenry than to pay off the special interests that fund their campaigns.
Thus, the Theory of the Missing Motive applies. Unable to see a rational and noble motive at the center of the Tea Party movement, liberals supply a darker and more convenient motive instead. Just as ancient cartographers wrote "there be dragons here" beyond the bounds of the world they knew, so liberals write "there be racism here" because the mind of the Tea Partier is undiscovered country in their map of the world. The Tea Party cannot be rationally and nobly motivated, the liberal believes, because the Tea Partiers are not rational and noble.
In other words, the problem is not that liberals dislike the principles promoted at Tea Party rallies. Most do not understand those principles. The problem is that liberals dislike the kind of people who go to Tea Party rallies.
Long before liberals rejected the placards, they rejected the people holding them."

My point exactly Zing. Back in the 90's everyone with an Ivy league diploma and good teeth thought they were gonna get some 90K/yr Wall Street gig or could start an internet based business. The bubble bursts and overall downturn has driven home old school reality -- you have to start at the bottom and grind.
40K/yr ain't a lot, but you wont starve. I know plenty of colleague graduates who would kill for 40K/yr right now.

ReplyDeleteAnon, these same Tea Party folks couldn't care less when Bush was overcharging the taxpayer credit card for two wars that were irrational and unnecessary. And despite your cut and paste job, there wasn't much of a conservative outrage over the wars in Afghanistan or Iraq when they started. The real outrage from the right didn't begin until mid 2006 when everyone and their mother realized that this war was foolish and wrongheaded. Liberals (not nominal Dems like MSNBC) were fairly consistent in their logic.
Simply put, history and logic shows that the Tea Party wouldn't exist if there wasn't a Center-Left Black Guy in the White House.

Actually, no -- all those ideas were tried and failed, miserably.
Historically, the US has been following this GOP blueprint for 30 years -- and we're dead last in everything except military expenditures.
You're right, business interests tend to get antsy in an overall economic downturn. Which is why the government has driven every economic recovery and boom since the turn of the century.
My entire industry lives and dies by the government intervention and policies. Business interests make millions off the internet and relatively cheap electricity, but they would have never invested the money need to build either.
California's knowledge economy is driven predominantly by the fact that their state universities rival the Ivy Leagues in terms of education. Until the days of Reagan and Pete Wilson, California made a commitment to build viable educational environment for it citizens. And big business made a killing off of it. (Example, one of the most widely used flavors of UNIX are the different iterations of BSD, which were developed at UC Berkeley.) Silicon Valley couldn't exist if it didn't have a steady supply of nerds right around the corner at Berkley and Stamford. Again, business interests benefit from a public good.
If the Dept of Energy and NIH didn't pump millions into the Human Genome Project, my first job would have never existed (big pharma wasn't gonna spend that kind of cash figuring out genomes). And if not for HITECH, my current field would be shaky.
Hell, the midwest would exist with the Homesteader act. And though its been manipulated for years - farm subsidies were a means to keep many farmers from starving to death in lean years.
Hate to break this to Tea Party folks but your nut ball ideas of no government intervention have been disproved since Herbert Hoover.
As someone who has sometimes wished that Jesse Jackson would stay out of issues so much, I must say that I think, in this case, he is right on the money. I know people cry and tense up whenever anything related to slavery or race comes up, but this time it makes sense (the slavery analogy). Dan Gilbert's comments in that letter and his subsequent actions were disturbing and to me were about more than just losing his best player.
ReplyDeleteI read this on Twitter from Marlon Wayans (I will censor one word): Man, these Dan Gilbert comments make me understand why Lebron left. He sound like his best slave ran away. F--- that go get yo freedom RINGS
What up Field? I saw an article on the NAACP denouncing or wanting to denounce the Tea Party folks and I realized that it was a clear indication that the organization has lost its way. Part of the reason it has lost its way is because it is primarily a black middle class "rights" organizations and has failed to take up the cause of its lesser brethren and sometimes agrees with the broader public's dim view of their brethren.
ReplyDeleteNO doubt the organization still is useful but it is past the time to reevaluate its focus and begin to take on the policies that subtly undermine black progress.
the Tea Party is really not worth wasting a lot of time on. Its worthy of note because they have the potential to be seriously counter revolutionary if folks decide one day that they want a government of the people and by the people and yes for the people.
ReplyDeletethe Tea Party is really not worth wasting a lot of time on. Its worthy of note because they have the potential to be seriously counter revolutionary if folks decide one day that they want a government of the people and by the people and yes for the people.
Mellanous, I concur, but the Tea Party would essentially need dump their race-baiting, backwards nativist thinking in order to be truly effective for change. It would be great to work with working class whites for change -- but that won't be possible if the same working class whites fight against the proven solutions that bring about real progress. So long as the hold to the John Birch Society mind set, they're counterproductive to true change.
Like I said, the Tea Party has every right to be angry, they're just angry about the wrong things and believe in failed solutions.
Zing-"I guess If things get bad enough, he can always eat his diploma. That should stop the rumbling in his tummy."
ReplyDeleteZing you have no conception of how well-off this kid is because you come from poverty. You see, he can live at home with his parents. Or, they will pay for an apartment for him to live in. His parents can afford to care for their son while he waits for something better.
However, I understand why most folks on this blog think the way they do. They never have had the experience of growing up with parents who had money. Most Blacks will take any kind of job during a recession because they are desperate. This kid is not, and never will be.
You folks think so small.
"NAACP President Ben Jealous has said the Tea Party movement needs to "be responsible members of this democracy and make sure they don't tolerate bigots or bigotry among their members"
ReplyDeleteDoes the NAACP tolerate homophobia, sexism, and anti semitism amoung their memebers? Yes they do. Shame on you Mr Jelous. Clean up your own act. Why do you make demands of the tea party that YOUR organization does't even follow? Why hasn't the NAACP made similar resolutions of bigotry against Nation of Islam and the New Black Panther Party. Tavis Smiley had FarraKKKHan on his State of the Black Union program held at University of Penn. Did the NAACP call him and his fellow black pannelists for sitting next to this black klansman? Nope. So they should STFU or occcasionally hold black folks to the same standards as whitey
LAC- Yeah I get your point about working with our white working class bretheren. And I always have and will believe that the potential is there for us to work together against our common enemies. And I believe that it will happen one day maybe not in my lifetime but it will happen.
ReplyDeleteActually I was referring to the fact that the direction that Tea Party is leaning is extreme right ward and that the rulers could wind up using them against those that want lasting change for all of the dumped on and left out. I was referring to the Tea Partyer's counter revolutionary potential in the meantime.
Anon you make a good point some blacks are sexist and homophobic and even bigoted, but you go too far it still doesn't preclude them for going after what is clearly the common enemy of even those black folks with the aforementioned failings and that is "racism."
ReplyDeleteAnd the problem with calling Farrakhan a Klansmen is that he has not advocated the destruction of anyone and unlike many Klansman has not harmed anyone.
Yes he is apparently a seperatist but he has not attacked anyone and he has no power to enforce any of his ideas.
Spare us the fake outrage. Because you are just as hypocritical as Ben Jealous running over to the Field's blog to tell us about ourselves while many in the white community still hold and voice really backward ideas about black folks and other people of color.
Talking about having a backyard that needs to be cleaned up!
But judging from your comments on this thread so far, you would rather dismiss movements and ideas that would advocate social equality and equal rights.

It never fails some ahistorical, justice and equality hating demagogue always shows up to rewrite and misconstrue history to suit his narrow, selfish, small minded view of the world.
For your information the idea of social justice --which is simply the idea that one should treat their neighbor as they would want to be treated and that all human beings should be treated as "just that" human beings --dates back to antiquity.
The code of Hannarubi sought to help men figure out how to live with one another justly. The ancient Hebrews after being freed from Egyptian captivity adopted a God who demanded that they treat one another justly and gave them laws that discouraged them from mistreating one another and even strangers or aliens. Thats really the purpose of the Pentatuch.
Many religious figures and prophets advocated social justice. It's downright wrong to try to imply that they were doing this to support a totalitarian form of socialism.
Jesus himself advocated social justice. Do you have proof that he too was faking?
Communalism was one way in which folks choose to live together in some early societies. Its not a Marxist invention. Marx just expanded on it. These ideas and the ideas of a more just society and ideas about socialism existed long before they were bastardized in the Soviet failure.
And please tell us whats so bad about people working and getting back what they actually earned and not what the captalist dictate they should have. Whats wrong with a planned economy and educating everyone's children and providing shelter for human beings and making sure that no one goes hungry? What's wrong with working for a society free of institutional racism and discrimination? Whats so wrong with the idea of social justice or human beings being able to live like human beings?

Black children have the highest rate of obesity of any group in the usa
THE AUDIENCE CLAPS LOUDLY
50 percent of our black children are going to develop cancer ,diabetes from obesity related diseases ...
THE AUDIENCE CLAPS EVEN LOUDER ...

please someone break it down for me
IF it is a decent job. But as a graduate of Colgate what do you consider a decent job?
ReplyDeleteWell seeing as I took a similar low end job after graduating from an even more prestigious school -- the answer is HELL YEAH!!!
This kid has virtually no experience and if he went to Colgate, chances are that he has no 'practical' degree (i.e., natural science, engineering, business, economics, etc.) that business people look for. But this job is just a stepping stone to better things -- he can always go back to school and get an advanced degree or work those connects for something better. Or, since he's probably fairly smart he can work the grind to a bigger position. (Again, the last resort, but not a bad one considering.)
Most of my college friends won't admit it now -- but unless they nabbed a Wall Street job; 40k was about as good as they could do, even with that fancy Ivy League degree.

The reason it is incomprehensible to you is because you have a sane mind and self-esteem, while the majority of Blacks don't.
